Trinity School 2020–2021 Annual Report

The annual report is a yearly summary of Trinity School’s fiscal year contributions and philanthropic efforts. The purpose of this report is to highlight the accomplishments of the past year and celebrate the Lord’s blessings and the generosity of the Trinity School community.

This report reflects data from the 2020–2021 fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2021. All gifts received after that date will appear in the 2021–2022 annual report. Audited financials for this past year will be available later in the fall.

A Message from the Head of School Dear Trinity Community, In the past twelve months, the Trinity community has experienced the most remarkable outpouring of gifts from God through you, our stakeholders and partners. This year of managing school through a pandemic has surely been hard, but with it has come blessings. I’m reminded of William Cowper’s great hymn: God moves in a mysterious way, his wonders to perform.

He plants his footsteps in the sea and rides upon the storm.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take; the clouds ye so much dread Are big with mercy, and shall break in blessings on your head.

I’m sure I don’t have to recount the storms and the clouds for any of us. But I do want us to remember the blessings.

Gratitude. The past academic year was the year of thankfulness. If I heard it once, I heard it hundreds of times: Parents and grandparents were deeply grateful to the school for showing up to do the job which our mission says we are called to do—educate students. I had the privilege of standing in the carpool line every morning, and I saw and heard the grateful parents who dropped off children enthusiastic to learn. It was, truly, a circle of gratitude, for we teachers and school leaders were immensely grateful for parents’ cooperation, support, and flexibility under an unprecedented upheaval of schedules and norms.

All of us were more inclined this past year to say “Thank you!” than to complain, and I believe this was a gift of the Spirit of God to Trinity School.

Generosity. Our gratitude spilled over very naturally into financial gifts to the school in support of the mission. We met and even exceeded our annual fund goal by the end of the 2020 calendar year— a fundraising record for Trinity. Credit here goes to our Director of Advancement, Niesha Campbell, and her strong team as they led the 50|50 campaign in the fall. Also, by the end of our fiscal year, June 30, 2021, we had completed the three-year Trinity Forward campaign, exceeding our $6.8 million goal. Special thanks are due to David Spence, the campaign chair, who has been a strong and faithful leader of this work for the past three years. David has often reminded me and those with whom we’ve met that “God loves a cheerful giver,” and it has been a joy to see the willingness of the Trinity community to step up.

The Brent Clark Arts and Engineering Building. One of the most devastating storms of this past year was the unexpected death of our strong and beloved Director of Finance, Brent Clark. It is difficult to say how hard this has hit us at Trinity School. But even in these first weeks after his homegoing, we have seen an outpouring of concern, consolation, and love for Brent, his family, and the school he loved. Appropriately, the Board has chosen to name the new building in Brent’s honor.

It is a beautiful, inspiring, and incredibly useful building for Trinity, and Brent was on point for its construction from the project’s inception nearly to the certificate of occupancy. The gifts that have been given spontaneously in his honor are especially meaningful, and we want to acknowledge those as well.

How can it be true that the 2020–2021 school year was both the hardest we have ever experienced and also the year when God poured out some of his richest blessings on us? This is the good news in Jesus, that God meets us in our deepest needs and goes down with us into the hardest things we ever have to face. It is a joy to labor in a place where we are all learning this together and giving the glory to the One from whom all blessings flow.

Trinity Forward: The Campaign for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was Trinity’s fourth capital campaign. Romans 12:10 The Trinity community is mourning the loss of Brent Clark, Trinity’s Director of Finance, who went to be with the Lord on June 14, 2021. Trinity will recognize Brent’s long and faithful service to Christ and the Trinity community by naming our newly constructed Arts and Engineering Building in his honor.

From his time as Board Treasurer through his years as Director of Finance, for more than two decades Brent led the school in so many critical ways, including the development of the campus master plan and leadership of the construction projects for both The HUB and the Arts and Engineering Building. Brent oversaw every aspect of the Arts and Engineering Building construction, from budget to design to implementation.

The Arts and Engineering Building will be an enduring testament to God’s faithfulness to Trinity and Brent’s heart for our school’s mission. Brent’s humble, pastoral leadership of the school is an inspiration to us all, and we are pleased to be able to hold his example before the entire community with this dedication.
