As wc bring the scholastic year, 1%1, to a close to-night, we also close a chapter in the story of C.B.C. It is not easy fOI' II in these days to assess the magnitude of the difficulties our Catholic pioneers faced and overcame when they founded this school more than sixty veal'S ago. We I ive in a different world' ~ a wot'ld, the creature comforts of which would have amazed and perhaps disconcerted our ha nly fcrefathers, When Bishop Gibney laid the found­ ation stone of our College, Pel,th ,vas a fl'ontier town, whel'e material C'omforts were few and secondary education an unattainable luxury.

Our admiration, ii:ratitude and praise cannot now mean anything- to Bishop Gibney, his cleq.>:,y, the pioneer Christian Brothel's 01' the Catholic people of that distant time. Nevertheles-, it is fitting that we thank God fol' the strong.' hearts and hands which brought so fruitful an institution into being.

1 suppose it is safe to assume that the men of any time are tempered by the ~pil'it of their leaders.

Great and good leaders beget deeds of high endeavoul' in the men who follow them. Bishop Gibney was such a leader. And to honoul' this founder of OUI' ollege we shall call the Assembly Hall in the new school, "Gibney Hall," and in doing so, record for future time the acknowledgement of OUI' indebt­ edness to a noble pastor and his flock, the pioneers of Catholic secondal'v education in Western Australia. Indeed', the whole of the project upon which we are now engaged may be considered their memorial, for it became a possibility only by the sale of the site and buildings of the original College, which we inhe'rited hom the past.

Now, what of the future"? It hus been the Brothel's' ambition from the outset to establish a complete college as a going concern in February. 1962.

We arc fortunate that our aspirations have been almost fully realised. "\\'hen the school openB next year I believe that evcrv aspect of a modem education will have been catered for. whether it be spiritual. cultural. academil' or sporting, It i- not

Jeporl 1961 often that a Catholic school presents so com plete a range of facilities on its open­ ing day. )lothing has been spal'ed in order to offer every boy the best condit­ ions tor progress in moral training and schola rship.

The Chapel, as was deliberately plan­ ned, is the con-picuous central feature of the school. It i:; a circular building, ex­ teriodv finished in omamental stone and natura'lly lit through a large central lante!'n and fourteen windows which ex­ tend the whole height of the walls, The windows are made in concreted coloured g'lass - an innovation in Aus ralia, pre­ senting symbolic motifs in the semi­ abstrace mannel'. The altar is centrally placed with . eating rang-ed around it so that no member of the congregation will be further than six benche, awav. It is hoped that by thus bringing: the - boys as close as possible to the altar they will be able to participate more easily in the relig'ious ceremonies.

The space im­ mediatel\' behind the altar has been used for saci'isties and confessionals, Above these a gallery will accommodate the choir facing the congregation, The school building contains assembly hall, library, lecture theatt'e, visual edu­ cation room, art 1'00111, choir rooms, science labol'<ltol'ies and classrooms. A pavilion. two ovals, tennis courts, a handball court and a squash cou rt will soon be available foJ' the boys' sporting activities.

Those of you who know the old school well are now aware from what I h:lve listed here that the new contains many features we did not fom\ed~' enjoy. O'f course, the additional features have in­ volved us in financial commitments far beyond the value of the sum reali ed bv the sale of the Terrace site, I should not like you to g'O away to-night with the impl'ession that the school is about to be,g'in a g'oldcn era of financial unresponsi­ bility. Such is not the case, We have had to pay a heavy price for the addition­ al fcatm'e' we believe should be included to give you and your sons a complete school. Religious Training.

It is with gr at satisfaction that report on the fine moral tone and interest in spil'itual thin~' that is evident through­ out the school.

The various societies established fOl' the fo'tering' of a deepel' personal spiritual life and to enable the boys to take part in the active Apostolate functioned well, and, we have hope that the~' achieved their purpose.

The Junior Conference of the St, Vincent de Paul Society under the pre"idency of 1'1'lax Angus assi"ted at Camillus House, helped to raise funds for Catholic In titutions.

conducted a lunch-time rosary. and dis­ tributed Catholic literature.

These activities, though small in themselves, are good signs fOl' greater and better public effort in later life.

The Crusaders of the Ble sed Sac ra­ me'1t and the Dominic Savio Club function­ ed efficiently.

All the classes of the Colle.ge have manifested continual inter­ est in Mis"ionary activities, and have contributed generously to the support of thr Pontifical l'l'1ission Aid Societies.

The Bovs' Retreats this veal' were con­ ducted b~~ Fathel' Cahill,' C.Ss.R. Fr. anpreciatecl the co-operation of the ban. who devoted themselve with edifving zeal to the exercises of the retreat. . .

r am proud to report that in July this veal', one of our Old Bovs, Richard Doyle, was ordained to the priesthood in St. Marv's Cathedral.

Early in the year also, three boys began studies for the priesthood, two in diocesan seminaries and one at the Oblate Fathers' Juniorate in Melbourne: three bo\'s en­ tered the Christian Brother' Ti'aining Colleg·e. Brothers and boys are justifiab­ ly proud of the number of stuclents who l1'lve devoted their lives to the service of Christ in the pri~ thood and )'eligious life,

To Fr. Folev we are much indebted for hi' constant intel'e't in the spiritual wel­ fare of the boys. To -Ig!'. Hog-an, and to the othel' priests of the parish I express also special thanks for readiness to help the bo~'s at all times.

Scholastic Work.

The roll-call this year is 830, and though we have more clas'l'ooms in our new' College. our intention is not to in­ nease our' total number but to reduee the size of the classes. Hence the in-takE' in the new veal' will ag'ain be relativel\' small.' . .

In thc academi' spherc there is l11ul'h to report that is pleasing to all who l'ealise that in the arduol1~ competition of the prc ent da,' it is vital that our boys fit themselves with the hig'hest quali­ fication.. In the Leaving Certificate 35 boys passed, eight gained partial pa -es, and 27 qualified for matriculation at the Univer ity.

Ten boys gained Common­ wealth cholarship'.

In the Junior Examination:; 73 bovs passed in full and two more obtained partial pass _ with the rig'ht to complete. a total of 95';.

Four of these boys gained Teacher BU)'s;1I'ies, one gained a Coombe Scholarship, one a Lynn Scholc1l'­ ship, and another the Bank Officials' Scho'arship. Thpse are ery satisfactory

l'e:;ults and indicate dilig-ent efforts on the part of the staff and' boy.

I am very pleased that our Old Boys at the niver 'it\, did so well.

Twelve ~raduated in' the faculties of Medicine. "oentistnT, Science, Education, Law. En­ idneerini, and Al·tS. Outstanding was Pat Hems who, in the final yeal' of his Dentistry cou rse, gained five distinctions.

This achievement is rendered even more uutstanding by the fact that onl~' one other distinction wa:< awarded. Pat i5 now in the United States doing a post p:raduate ccurse and we wish him further successes in his new sphere of studies.

These result,,: a re very g-rati fying and are largely due to the fact that a general spirit of studious pUl'jJOse pervades our classes. We ti'U5t that this tradition of study will be continued and even improv­ ed upon thrcugh the additional features contait,ed in the new Colleg·e.

In these days it is obvious that scientifie am] techno!og'iC'al training' must become in­ creasingly important in our schools.

In our new College facilities are such that we 5hall be able to give the boys a sound practical knowledge 'of the sciences.

We have to-dav g'lal'ing' abuses of scientific knowledge.' . :'<ations. divorcing science from true wisdom. a re employing' it for the ole purpose of wielding power. Any educational svstem that concentrates on scientific and'technical success to the ex­ clusion of spiritual and moral values is in danger of producing tho e conditions which will spell the destruction of our society, and perhaps of the world. Some nation, ignore the fact that God gives to man the intelligence to discover the secrets He incorporated in the universe in creating the world so a to know them better and to u e them better.

In our quest for knowledge wc shall unite virtue too. In the works of ,od's Hands we shall see the Face of God.

Prefects, Early in March the new Prefects' Coun­ eil was installed. Rt. Rev. :\'[gr. Hogan blessed the badges of office and presented th m t the newly appointed prefects.

The Head Prefect and College aptain for l!')(ll is Max Angus who has canied hi' responsibilities honourably and with dig·nit~,.

He is assisted by John Anderton, Paul de Lano, John Dunn, Michael Edgely, Tony Eyles. Ray Harrold, Richard High, l\bx Hyde and 'onn :\'Ic\'eigh. Cultural Activities.

Music. singing. dancing', play-actlng, debating and oratory have all been .given due emphasis during the year.

fruitful year. The public' heard them to advantage ut va rious sing'ing competitions in whicll our soloists and choirs met with marked succes'.

Classes in ballroom dancing were again taken bv M r. Sam Gilki on and I must express 'my great satisfaction at the ~kill and confidence displayed by the boys at the School and Prefect' Dances. Some 120 boY' took lessons this veal' and I would urg'e all the senior boys' to join the da ses.

There are some who, though brilliant at school work, al'e socially in­ competent. The e would benefit greatl~' from dancin!!,' tuition for a boy so trained besides gaining poise and a sen"e of rhythm become' more adaptable to meet­ ing stl'ang'el's.

Public Speaking and Debatin,C: played an important part in Leaving and Sub­ Leaving activities during the first two terms. During second term, debate' werE' held with Our Lady' College, St. Hilda's, Loreto Convent. Perth College, Methodist Ladies' College, St. John's, Scarborou,g·h.

Brigidine Convent and Christian Bl'othel's' College, Highgate.

In the second term also, an exhibition of debating of very high standard was given at the College by two team: from the Rostrum lub. and the Perth Junior Chamber of Com­ melTe. In August the final of the W.A. School,,'

The Leaving' and Sub-Leaving' classes entel'ed the play which you have seen this evening in the first Catholic Schools' Drama Festival. conducted by the Therry Society.

Cadets.

Both Army Cadets and Air TI'aining Corps undel' the supervision of Brs. Drake, Canigg, Trembath, and 1\11'. Smith, have had another year of sound training.

Those of you who visited the camps held at Northam and Peal'ce during the veal' 0\' witnessed the Passing O'ut Pai'ade earlier this term will have seen the hia'h standard to which the training' has been canied. The total enrolment in~ the Cadets for this year was 207.

Sport.

In sport the yea I' has been a normal one. Success in inter-school competition came OUI' way in Senior Cricket, Senior Football, Athletics (Aggregate) and Tennis.

As you parents know the BI'others set a high value on the part participation in

games plays not only in the physical de­ velopment of the boy but also in the form­ ing' of his character. Hence alnple sport­ ing' opportunities are provided at the College for every boy, not just the talented few. The inter-House competitions were again keenly contested and the champion House for 1DG1 is Campion.

Conclusion.

Again I am pleased to acknowledge the splendid service I'endered to the school by the men and women of the various Com­ mittees and thei I' man,' helpers for theil' tnliy magnificent work for the College throughout the year.

The boy choiristers of St. Mory's Cathedral Mole Choir need little introduction.

In its present form, the choir has been associated with C.S.c. for 23 years The origin of Says' Choir Schools con be traced back to the Monastic and Cathedral Schools of the middle ages. The pure tone of boys' voices was used to sing the treble parts with the monks in choir.

In this way, the great chol r schools of the Sistine Chapel, Westminst rand Monserrot originated. The boy choristers of St. Mary's Cathedral ore proud to be associated with such a great tradition. They are privileged to shore in the great heritage of choral music which the Church has cherished for centuries.

Each Sunday, they sing at High Moss, the ancient plainsong, the classical 16th Century Poly­ phony, or Masses by contempory composers.

The boys are happy to use the great gift which God has given them to sing God's Draises.

They ore mindful of the old adage, "He who sings well, prays twice."

In the course of their duties the choir boys receive a thorough musical training. With this may be coupled training in discipline and

team spirit. The boys ronge in age from nine to fifteen, but when they come together os 0 choir, they form one family with a com­ mon soul.

Each boy contributes an important part to the combined effect of beautiful singing.

Strict obedience to the conductor and great voice control ore demanded. All these ele­ ments contribute to the formation of 0 solid character in each boy.

Furthermore, this training is received in the religious atmosphere of the great Cathed­ ral Church of the Archdiocese.

The boys assist in an active way at 011 major functions in the Cathedral.

Their religious life is bound up intimately with this great church.

The seeds of an excellent tradition are already bearing fruit with the Cathedral Choir.

It is gratifying to see past choir boys coming back to sing with the men, or to listen tu the Mosses and motets which they learnt as boys.

May that t redition grow end the religious and musical atmosphere increase with the years.

FLOOR PLAN OF THE CHAPEL.

BROTHERS' ENTRY

Design: The Chapel is planned to be the focal pint of the college building group. I t is circular with 0 radius of 40 fr. and 23 ft. high at the wall The Sanctuary is in the centre with the seating grouped around. This enables all at the congregation to be close to the altar \'Iith excellent visual and s')und conditions.

The Ch~ir and organ have been positioned In a choir loft Over the Sacristies.

Construction: The Chapel is constructed On 20 ccncrete piles 60 fr. into the ground, linked by rein­ forced concrete ring beams and reinfcrced ccncrete columns onc' concrete sub-floor.

The roof is a steel framed circular truss system with the stru:ture exp: ed on the inside and with centre lantern light 9 ft. in diameter.

The external walls are of Iccal Tocdyay stcne and internally-s:Jlmcn faced brickwork, divided into panels by the white columns reatur€s: The Windows to the Chapel are unique in that they are the first type ef concrete and glms windows used in Australia. They are de-signed by famous Londcn stained glass artist, Mr. Carl Edward, and are executed lecolly by Gowers and Br:wn. Each window is designed with its own th me of the ecclesias­ tical calender. The lower sectiens of the windows ore fully glazed in amber antique glass and are able ta be opened for ventilatien tD floor level.

The effect of lighting to the Chapel was considered in great detail. All the Side windows will give coloured subdued lighting with the main natural lighting from the lantern aver the altar in the Sanctuary. The lantern ;s

suspended over the altar and is faced with natural timber boarding of block butt and V/andao. The natural timber is used exten­ sively in the seating and balustrading. The seating accommodates approximately 300 boys and ) 6 Brothers.

The main f1cor IS mos::lic parquetry floor­ Irg. The Sanctuary floor and raised platform t:J the shrines ore in black marble. The altars and shrine altars are also in block and white marble.

The ceiling is a 2 in. insulation slob pre­ treated with black and gold spray and set between the structural system.

The reredos is constructed in timber With or; open fabric effect.

The crucifix, designed by Mrs. Margaret Priest, is in aluminium. Mrs. Priest has designed the statues fer the side altars, the Sacred Heart and the Mother and Child. She has also undertaken the 14 statiens wl,ich ere executed in block and white plaster.

The two main entrances ore linkerl ta the circular covered way-the b:ys' entrance fr2m the Hall and the Broth",rs entrance from the Mcnastery. The entrance hoeds project into :he Chapel and are lined with naturnl timber b:arding to match the lantern.

There is a 7 ft. band of white stone pebbles ccmpletely around the Chapel, contrasting with the dark granite b::lse with 0 40 ft. high free-standing cross facing the main approach to the College. The Chapel and the Cross will be floodlit.

The artificial lighting in the Chapel con­ sists of suspended white light fittings, can· trasting with the black ceiling and concealed dawnlight in the lantern aver the altar and Sanctuary.

Annual Concert Our Annual Speech Night and Concert was held this year at His Majesty's Theatre in lote October. The Hon. Mr. Court, M.L.A., Minister far LabGur and Devel pment, was the guest of honour, and he distributed the prizes. The Headmaster presented the rep:>rt to a packed house. The news of the moment was, of course, the new name for the College a:; from 1962. The announcement that it would be called Trinity College was received \:ith mixed feelings, many considering that the old name "C.B.C." Or "Terrace" should somehow be retained. All agreed that the new name was dignified, terse and suitable; in time its unfamiliarity would disappear.

Certainly no college could hove a more power­ ful patron than the Holy Trinity.

An outstanding feature of the Concert was the quality of the singin~, reflecting in no uncertain fashion the exce11ence of the work f Mrs. M. Kerr. Almost every boy in the Junior School, and many from the Senior School, are taken by her twice a w ek far singing. The splendid rendition of its pieces by the massed choir of nearly two hundred voices must have been as gratifying to her a:; it was to us all. The Junior School pre­ sented a number of pleasant little items-a

minuet, a plume drill, and a splendid action song with its appropriate title "H.M.A.S. Causeway". One of the best items of the night was the solo violin playing of Philip Corn 1', a member of the L.C. Class. The Sub-Leaving delighted the large audience with its "Old Timers", an imaginative return to the dances ond songs of the 'twenties.

The main item of the night was a dramatic verse-play by J. Drinkwater, "X 00, A Night or the T rojon War". This play was presented by the L.C. Class, and is a difficult one, rely­ ing much an the use of atmosphere to produce i12 maximum effect. Hardlv a sound could be heard during its performance, so nthralled was the audience; the fine ovation at its con­ clusion was fitting reward to a lot of hard work.

The Concert concluded on 0 lighter note with the Tumbling Squad, which excelled it­ self.

The Brothers and boys owe a deep debt of gratitude to Mr. Eric Edgley for his kindne S in making ovoiloble to us the theotre, bur above all, for his unfoiling courtesy ond ca-operotion in our sometimes unreasonoble demands.

A wise man once said that culture wos caught rather thon taught.

This is probobly very true.

When does a child begin "cotch­ ing" it obviously at home, from his very earliest years.

Culture in the brood sense is not an appreciation of the arts, much less it is o manner of speaking; it is inherent in that fundamental sense of values which 0 child learns from those with whom he associates.

Can 0 school take up 0 child at eight years ot age, and teach him culture in thirty hours o week J Probably not-certainly not, if his home ideals are diametrically opposed to those he learns at school. Some of our children spend almost as much time in front of the Television set, if one includes holiday periods.

What then can the school do?

Under ideal circumstances, a good deal­ particularly if there is co-operation between the home and the school. This is one of the major advantages of the Church school.

Parents who send their children to a religious school of their own denomination know thot there will be few fundamental differences of outlook between home ond school; this is a big help. Is there sufficient co-operotion be­ tween parents and teachers ot this school?­ olmost certoinly not. I t is something we must be prepared to think obout in the near future.

Courtesy, consideration for others at 011 times J The child learns these thin9S from his

teachers certainly-but probably much more so from his companions, particularly the school seniors. It was the realisation of this simple truth and its implications that made Dr. Arnold of Rugby one of the great educationalists of his time. Anyone who really thinks about the tone, the esprit de corps of a great school, wi 11 understand why schools place such high value of smartness of appearance, on uniforms and corporate activities, religious, sporting and otherwise.

Leadership and responsibilityJ In a sporting team, in the ranks of a cadet corps, a boy learns that fundomental pre-requisite of leadership-how to obey. Leadership and the r sponsibilities it entails come gradually through the standordised and time honoured channels. One who has no genuine respect for the rights and opinions of others may make a driver, but he will never be a leader of men.

Yet with leadership honourably earned will come conviction, self-possession and confidence in one's own abilities.

Aesthetic values J Here aaain 0 good school allied with a good home con contribute much to a child's cultural development. Speech train­ ing, appreciation of gaod music, choral and instrumental work, dramatics and dancing are all an important port of a sound educational programme. To neglect them in the interests of hunting academic and sporting scalps would be to do a chi Id an injustice from which he will suffer far the rest of his life. On the other hand, con the school really achieve much if "contemporary" dressing, careless speech, trashy magazines and musical rubbish are the staple aesthetic diet of the home J Social training J Most of this the child learns without noticing it, from his parents, teachers and companions. The teaching of traditional ond modern dancing is on important port of the school life of senior students, as also are debating and public speaking, and the sociol activities thot go with them.

The things taught in schools ond colleges are not themselves on education, as Ruskin said, but rather the meons to on educotion.

A true Christian culture is not really port of the Curriculum, it is inextrically tied up with the ideals of 0 truly Christian home on the one hand, and the traditions ond spirit of a great school on the other. Given these two, os the Psalmist says, "A young man according to his woy, even when he is old he will not depart from it."

MOST REV. MATHEW GIBNEY, Third Bishop of Perth (1887-1925).

Shortly before his death in 1925, Biship Glbney, then a very elderly man, gave to Brother M. P. Nunan, the retiring Head­ master af C.B.C., his pectoral cross, made from Kalgoorlie gold and presented to him by the miners of Kalgoorlie in 1903. The design of this pure gold cross was celtic, with sprays of delicately carved shamrocks cnd a fine emerald as its centre piece. The old Bishop told Brother Nunan that as 0 token of his affection for the Insti tute, he wanted the cross kept by the Christian Brothers until one of their Australian-born

pupils would be consecrated a Bishop, when it should be presented to him. The distinction of receiving the cross went to Most Rev. Joseph Basil Raper, who was consecrated the second Bishop of Toowoomba in 1938.

This incident will always be remembered by the Christian Brothers in Western Australia :JS a gesture symbolic of the affection of their Bishop and Father in Christ, Mathew Gibney, the Founder of Christian Brothers' College, Perth, and, indirectly, of its many children.

His memory will be fittingly preserved in years to come by the naming of the new hall in Trinity College, "Gibney Hall", in his honour. The Friendship between the great Bishop and Brother Nunan, Headmaster of

C.B.C. for over twenty years, was 0 lifelong cne. They were two fine men, bound by their mutual respect for one another, alike in COur­ age, devotion, foresight and ability to work.

To them the Catholic community in W.A. owes 0 major portion of its educational <,ystem.

Mothew Gibney was 0 strong, brood minded and brood shouldered I rishmon with an open countenance and a kindly wit-a man un­ daunted by obstacles Or difficulties. In those early days, with virtually the whole af the Western State for his perish, his mounted figure was a familiar sight from Perth to Albany, Geraldton to Kalgoorlie. On his long rides, cften through virgin bu h, riding alone and I ading a pockhorse he was a welcome visitor to many 0 lonely Irish settler along the way. I rishmon as he was, he loved a good horse, become a great bush man and was proud of it.

Hi role in the siege of Glenrowan Hotel, the lost stand of the Kelly gong, is part of an Australian legend. At the time, he was on a tcur af Victoria, collecting for the building of the Subiaco foundling home. Knowing that th K lIy's, Hart and Byrne were, nominally at least, Catholics, he asked the besieging police to lift their fire, then walked straight ta the burning hotel and in a ide door. He emerged

Every bay in the College is a member of one of the four Houses; brothers and couSins are placed, as far as mav be, in the same one. Boys will remain in the same House for their whole period at C.B.C. Experience has amply shown that if the family builds up a loyalty to a particular House, then the boys will benefit much more.

An essential part of a senior boy's train­ ing is the undertaking of various responsible functions in the life of the school. The Army and Air Force Cadets, leadership in sporting teams, debates and the like, all afford oppor­ tunity for experience in command. The efficient running of the House System places heavy demands On the zeal and competency of the leaders of the various divisions. To date Our Seniors have responded well to the challenge: they have set a standard for those coming after them.

Externals play a big part in the develop­ ment of team spirit. The provisions of House badge and colours has quickly produced in the College keen loyalties. Far administrative

shortly afterwards, carrying one of the innocent hostages, and the dead body of Byrne. Such VIas the calibre of Mothew Gibney.

When the Christian Brothers established their first school in Melbourne in 1872, Father Gibney, by now Vicar General and Adminis­ trater of the Perth diocese, tried to persuade Brother Treocy to send some of his men to Perth. Undeterred by 0 reluctant refusal, he ccntinued his efforts to establish a Catholic College in his diocese and was rewarded far his perS2verence in 1893 when the first three Brethers arrived from Adelaide. In order that the Terrace si te shculd be the property of the 8 others, a bill et sale was drawn up; the Brothers paid £ 1,000 for the property and the Bishop returned the money os his dona­ tion to the building of the West residential wing. During the years that follawed he blessed cnd encouraged the schoal which he always regarded as his pride and ioy, making an several occasions, substantial gifts towards the completion of the main building.

We could do not better than wish the new Trinitv College, S:J new, and yet so old and proud of its traditions, the gift of that simple Faith of the great man it is honoured to call it~ Faunder.

Excitement and k enness in the results of cv n the most junior team proved that the great majority of lads were no longer mere lookers-on.

As for os the competitions were concerned Compion was once again supreme. Since the inter-House rivalry extended down through the whole school, every boy knew that by his own personal effort he could help his team: in like manner, his failure to co-operate weakened his team's prospects of success.

Senior On the pages that follow the members and the activities of the Senior Students have been set aut.

In this group, and especially in the Leaving Classes, Iies the hope and the future of the College.

Soon to step out into the great world, with its promise and its problems, these lads will stand befor their fellows as the embodiment of their College.

The reputation of their Alma Mater is in their hands it is for them to bring her glory and honour; and it is equally in their power to bring the blush of shame.

Far long years they have been offered all that a College like ours can offer.

Some have accepted readily the work, the trials and the burdens of school life, and in this their ready acceptance, they have prepared themselves for the more difficult problems to be faced in the world

of work.

Some few have been unwilling to co-operate with the College in their formation, and these will be lacking in the personal and social development so needed to make good in the battle of life.

This work of development begun in the Junior School and continued in the Senior, is long and arduous.

Opportunities of all kinds are placed in the way of the boy.

Some of these are extra-mural, such as the Armed Services, Debating, Dramatics, all kinds of Sport, Dancing and the like.

He is free to do his part in each and so benefit himself: and he is able to evade by various kinds of subterfuge, participation in them.

He will be the ultimate loser.

THE

COLLEGE

SOCIETY.

The initial meeting of the 1961 Saint Vincent De Paul Society was conducted under s mewhat unusual circumstances.

Rev. Fr. McGuire, S.C.A., a visiting Missionarv from Balgo Hills Notive Mission, in the Kimberleys, addressed the newly-formed Sxiety.

Father oppealed ta the members for b:)th material and spiritual help.

The Society was only too glad to be given the oppcrtunity to assist in such a worthy cause.

As 0 result the members of the Society seemed to acquire on enthusiasm which was to ins::;ire their work for the rest of the year.

Although membership was, perhaps, the largest for many years mcst members hod hod relatively little experience in the work of the Sxiety. This, however, in no way dampened their zeal.

The officers elected for 1961 were:­ President: Maxwell Angus.

Vice-President: Anthony Baker.

Secretory: John Anderton.

Treasurer: Norman McVeigh.

Here it must be mentioned how grateful the Society is to Rev. Br. Seaman for his guidance and help thrauqhout the yeor.

Annual

The thirty-strong body endeavoured to carry cut the principal aims of th Society, nomely, the sanctification of its members and the wel­ fare, spiritual and corporal, of our neighbour.

With these aims foremost in mind, members carried out various works such as duties at Camillus House, conducting a lunch-time Rosary, sale of Catholic literature, especially at the "Record" and the "Catholic Digest," and hospital visitations.

These visitations have, it is hoped, aided character training and aiven the members helpful experience should they later desire to join a Senior Conference.

A d:::natian from Society funds was made to the "Soup Kitchen" conducted by the Daughters of Charity.

With the donation went Our prayers far the success of this generous work.

It is hoped that the experience gained through the Society will inspire m mbers to participate in the Senior Conferences of the Society in their respective parishes for it rrust be remembered that­

Our Annual Retreat, held in August last, was conducted by a Redemptorist Missioner, Rev. Fr. Cahill, C.SS.R. It was divided into three phases, each of three days: First Year was followed by Leaving and Sub-Leaving, then Junior and Second Year.

Fr. Cahill spoke very highly of the way in which the great majority of the lads entered into the spirit of the Retreat A Retreat is a time when a period, free from all kinds of distraction, is provided Lectures, readings, Mass, Benediction and

prayer in common play their part.

Each boy may think seriously about God, about his relations with other people, and about him­ self.

If the full potential of the opportunity afforded him is realised, and if he makes best use of his chances, the lad will draw fruit of great value for time and for eternity. The Retreat is on occasion when a genuine effort has to be mode to secure the graces offered

by God. If one can judge from externals, the boys of C.B.C. responded to the Challenge.

This year's school dances were very happy events. The College dance was held an July 3rd, in Anzac House. A record crowd of boys and their partners attended, and the evening proved a very bright and happy one. Harry Bluck's orchestra provided gay and lively rhythm, and the evening was further high-

lighted by an exhibition of Spanish-American doncing from Mr. Gilkisan's professional troupe.

Towards the end of the supper, Rev. Brother Kelly thanked the Ladies' Committee far their generous preparation of 0 tasty supper, and Mr. Gilkison for the skilful way he had trained the boys not only in the art of dancing, but also in the SOCial graces expected at these functions. The Head Bay, Max Angus, echoed Brother Kelly's words.

The Prefects' dance in the College Hall an the 20th July climaxed a week's strenuous work by the Prefects and same of the Leaving C lass. As the move of the school from the Terrace to the Causeway is the tal k of the doy, the theme of the hall decorations centred on travel In the previous week an intensive drive for posters, which relieved the city's T ravel Bureaus of many pri zed pieces, was made, and the finished background of colour­ ful posters gave warmth and excitement to the atmosphere. Many appreciative comments were received from our visitors, who included last year's Prefects, and representatives from other Colleges. With Mr. Gilkison as M.C ccuples again moved round the floor to the merry rhythm of Harry Bluck's orchestra.

This being the last social event in the olel Hall, we w~re most gratified that all present thoroughly enjoyed the evening, which so closed on a joyful note the last Prefects' Dance to be held within the walls of the old College.

We extend our congratulations and sincere good wishes to Rev. Br. J. V. Mann, an Old Boy of the College, who, on Christmas Day, 1960, pronounced his Final Vows as a Chris­ tian Brother.

Jchn, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C D. Mann of Campsie Street, North Perth, attended the Terrace in 1947 to 1948, during which years he was well to the fore in both scholastic and sporting achievement. The 1949 Annual r cords his First Place in Seccnd Year Physics gained in the Inter-school examinations.

Befc:re returning to his home State this year, John spent some time teaching at the Brothers' Colleges in North Melbourne, Essen­ don and SI. Kilda. At present he is continuing his valuable work at CB.H.S., Highgate. Of his brothers, Ken, Rev. Br. K. R Mann, is currently teaching at St. Patrick's College, Ballarat, while Peter, a member of the 1961 Sub-Leaving Class, maintains the family link with CB.C To Br Mann we wish many years of fruit­ ful service in the apostolate of the schools.

The ability to express cne's self in Public is a great asset to any young mon, whether he is good at it Or not. All pupils in the Leaving Certificate classes took port in at least one debate, and most had two or three attempts at public speaking.

Federation debates were contested against Perth College, St. Hilda's, and the Methodist Ladies' Colleges, in Claremant and South Perth.

A new team was entered an each occasion and while we were vanquished we certainly enjoyed the social side of the debating evenings.

Challenges were accepted from Our Lady's College, Brigidine Convent, Loreto Convent, Nedlands, and Christian Brothers, Highgate.

Our teams here were more successful and we were victorious on four occasions.

The finals of the Federation Competition were held in the College Hall on the 11 th September; the finalists were Scotch College and Methodist Ladies' College, South Perth Our President, was Chairman for the evening and for once, the boys beat the girls at their own

Ea'-Iy in the year an exhibition debate was stcged for us by the Junior Chamber of Com­ merce, and the Rostrum Club.

On this occasion we had the pleasure of the company of the young Icdies from Victoria Square.

We thank both organisations for on inform­ ative and enjoyable evening.

There was no doubt os to who should win the "Brother Nunan" prize for Public Speak­ ing.

The Society extends its hearty con­ gratulations to Michoel Edgley, on his well deserved win.

Without its Committee and Officer-bearers, the Literary and Debating Society could not have functioned as well as it did.

The Sub-Leaving Class, assisted by Brother Seaman, at the inaugural meeting during March, chose the Society Executive by vote, and a close b:>llot resulted in the election of W F. Delaney as President, by one vote; Secretary was P. M. Nisbet, and the two Cammitteemen were A. J. Baker and C. M. Cook.

Later a Social Secretary was required and this position went to J K. O'Brien, who filled the position admirably.

He received able assistance from R. F. Lawe and G. H. Heppekausen.

We debated during the year amongst our­ selves every week. and also against Our Lady's College, St. John's, Scarborough, Loreto Convent, Nedlands and Ladies' Me­ thadist College, Claremont.

In a close competition the "Brother Nunan" prize for Public Speaking was awarded to C. M. Cook.

During the class debates and impromptu speaking sessions, 011 improved greatly, and we are looking forward to "Trinity College" winning the Federation Debates in 1962.

Th performances of this year's 1st XVIII e 'ceeded exp ctations.

Th u~h 0 mLich lighter side than these we have been oble to field in the past and including only five who were regular members of the 1960 team, the team did well to gain victories in nine of the thirteen matches played.

In the A.C.C Competition, Terrace shared the Premiership with C.B.C., Leederville, and S.I.C., New orcia with whem we finished level on pCJints, though' well behi nd on percentage.

More pleasing than any success they achieved was the team's fine spirit.

This show d in their style of play in which working together through backing-up, hand-passing, etc., was made to count far much more than any individual brilliance. A great deal of the credit far the teamwork must c rtainly go t:J the captain, Chris Lalor, who, besides setting a fine example himself, was untiring in en­ couraging the team to give of its best.

THE TEAM. Chris lalor: An efficient captain, Chris showed marked ability in 011 the skills of the game being particularly adept in the use of the hanl-pass. For 0 follower, his tally of 23 goals, including six in onp match, was very creditable.

Ray Harrold: Centre half-forward and vice­ captain. A fine mark and possessor of a long, driving dropkick, Ray, when on his best form meant much to our attack.

John Anderton: Probably the best ruckman C. B.C. has had for many years, John showed great skill in deliverin!=) the ball to his rovers.

Under pressure in hard fought games, he dis­ played remarkable ceurage and stamina.

It was fitting that he should be adjudged the fairest and best player far 1961.

John Allanson: After a few games at full­ forward, in which he did well, John moved to the wing where he was able to use his speed tu advantage and where he performed quite creditably.

Tony Baker: From the centre positien, Tnny, with delightfully accurate passes either foot to the half-forward line, onstantly sent us into attack.

His excellent judgment to enabled him to take not a fe'" s'Jlendid marks but, best of all, was the g-reat spirit which he displayed in every game.

Roly Bott: A talented footballer with mork­ ing abilitv of a high order, Roly gO',e much qoed service first in the centre and, in the latter part of the season, at centre half-back; a~ his best when the going was hardest.

John Burrell: A handy utility player. John did best as a follower far which pcsitirn his speed and determination proved valuable asspts.

Trevor Canning: An ankle injury hamoered T revor throuqhout most of the season and nre­ vented him from giving 0 true indicatien f his abilitv 0 0 rover.

Phillip Corney: Phil proved himself 0 reliable

full-back who combined d2terminoti:::n and sound judgment with a goed turn of speed and a strong kick.

Injury, unfortunately, kept him out for most of the second half of the seas:Jn. Zoltan Kcvacs: At full forward Zoltan, when given the opportunity, pulled down many quite spectacular marks.

In kicking for goal he was seldom off the target.

The Under 14'5 succeeded in winning half the matches in which they played, enabling them to finish equal third in the ccmpetitian.

Best and fairest award went to R. Shields, the vice-captain, who was always a d:::minant play­ er at centre half-back.

Captain F. Miller was invaluable, and enccuraged his team to greater efforts by his own example.

J. Hooper, a rLliable rover, D. Banovich, on accurate full­ forward, and M. Petkovich, a determined full­ back, always turned in good games.

N. Luptan, P. Manucci and J. Murphy provided the rucking power throughout the season.

The football team again figured promin­ ently in the East Perth Junior Football Com­ petition, with 0 total of ten wins out of four­ teen.

This year's team was comparatively smaller than expected. but despite this the team went down only twice to East Perth and Christian Brothers' High School These teams proved too strong and possibly more exper­ ienced than our men.

However, we finished third on the premiership table, and so won our way to the final after a hard, closely contested first semi-final against Inglewoad.

First Semi-final: C.B.C., 9-7; Inglewood, 3-5.

Our fortune changed when we were well beaten in the final by Christian Brothers' High School who eventually went on to take the premiership honours.

Best Players.

N. Giglia: Awarded the fairest and best Ned proved to be on elusive player and the s~earheod of many of our attacks.

J. McVeigh: Captain of the side and a brilliant centre-man, who dominated his posi­ tion on numerous occasions.

His efforts won him the Best Man on the Ground award in the first semi-final.

W. Jones: Warren filled the position of rover very well and was dangerous when rest­ ing in the forward pocket J. Georgiades: A dashing full-back, who showed out with his long kicking and good anticipation.

C. Alien: A reliable ruckmon and most im­ proved player in the side.

G. Kendoll A strong rugged player, both o rei iable centre half-back and ruckmon.

All this fine competition would not hove been available except for two persons Mr. Reynolds, the President of the East Perth Junior Football Council, and Mr. J. Pearton, the Secretory. These men generously gave their time in the organisation of the com­ petition, the arrangement of ovals and select­ ion of um:>ires. The College fielded seven teams this year, si" of which took port in the Saturday M:Jrn­ ing Competition. The First XI played in the Senior Afternoon Campetian os 0 First Divi­ sion Under 18 team. The nurrber of boys playing hockey ha increased in amazing pro­ portions, especially among the first year players, who tielded three teams for their grade.

few occasions were badly beaten. About hal f­ voy through the ,eas::n Mr. H. Duncan began to ceach this team and their standard of ploy was raised. The team, ably led by Terrv Tcmlins, wha did 0 sterling j::b os goalkeeper, possessed many cutstanding players, who formed the backbone of the team. Am~ng th3 forwards were Paul Wells and Kerry Burvill, who both p!ayed outstandingly On the win£s They were supported by the inside brward, Kevin Williams and Tim Delaney, wha scored most cf the team's goals. hockey and saved many goals by beginning a forward movement. Dovid Andersan Paul Canti and Tany Eyles played firm hockey i" the full-back positions. During the year Colin Cook, John Harvey and Jae L1arens, in various positions, played goed heckey. while Gerald Flynn could always be relied on in defence. Fleoy, who, along with Brian Lynch, formed the backbone of this team. Bret Christian and Alien 1I0rens have shown great keen­ ness and have, therefore, improved since the beginning of the season. Geoffrey Smith and David Eciminston rendered valuable assist­ ance to their team. John Margaria, on the ":I"g, played excellent hack y and we will be looking for great things from this boy next year. The goalie, Richard Harper, merits praise for a fine year's play.

"A" GRADE.

"C" GRADE.

Although a large training list for this team raised the standard of play it was only able to gain fifth place in the competition.

Hewever, the players had 0 most enjoyable season, with their share of victories.

This grade has produced many good plovers and they will, without any d:Jubt, be able to fill places in the First XI next year. Paul 'vVells and Pat Van Rooyen did very well In the State trials and were most unfortunate to miss final selection.

Ivan Ilich, the captain, proved to be a ccpable leader and often urged his team on to victory. Among the forwards were Paul Wells and Tony Holmes, who both played great hockey.

They were supported by Michoel Jervis, Vaughan Heenan and Peter Atkinson. The outstanding half-back was Pot Macdonald, who was as~isted by Don Brown and Ion Lewis. In the full-back line Terry Mclntyre played very strong hockey and saved many desperate si tuations. Robert Gordd'lrd olsc played very well in this position. Pat Van Rooyen, os goalie, played excellent hockey.

Due to the coaching of Molcolm Barr, this team gained third place on the list. However, they missed the finals on their goal percent­ age.

All the team members deserved credit for their sportsmanship, enthusiasm and ability, in particular, Ken Allonson, Kevin Fitzpotrick, John Andrew, Gavin Barr and Terry Stidwell.

Although comprised of inexperienced first year boys, this team had obtained a very high standard of hockey by the end of the SE:ason, and the future looks as if this could be a premiership side.

In the Second Division the team was coached by Mr. Lawton, to whom the team is indebted. This team hod a most enjoyable season. Among some of the more prominent players were John Whitehead and Gerald ~unt. Brian Wilson, David Rayhill, Wayn€' Raphael and Greg Lowton played consistently throughout the year.

The Third Division team consisted of students from 6th and 7th Grades. They were coached by Mr. Robert Meade, and owing to their young ages they did not top their list. However, they have had the experience. and will, no doubt, come to the front in seasons to come. Some of their outstanding plovers were Graham Atkinson, Steven \lVilliams, Maurice Meade and David Colliss.

"8" GRADE. ThiS team performed quite well considering that it found it hard to field G full team.

Most of the regular players were very con­ sistent and this prevented them from slipping to the bottom of the list. Michael Petkovich the captain, always played a firm game. H~ was assisted by Dovid P~llard and Phil

UMPIRES. This year many boys attended the course of "Junior Hockey Umpire" lectures on Friday nights. Most of these boys also went to watch senior umpires control the A 1 matches at the W.A.c.A. To make sure they did not miss any of the finer points, a great number volunteered their services as ball boys.

At Crawley Baths On Wednesday, 1st March, just two weeks after school resumed C.B.C. held its Swimming Sports in which some 480 boys took port.

The struggle for points began with 0 bang ond 0 splosh as the nine competitors in the Under 9 "B" 26 Yards Freestyle race dived inta the water.

This struggle ended only os the Open Relay toms hod left the water. Although Chanel hod won this vent in record-breakinq time it was Campion House that had displayed the greatest all-round strength and consequently hod won the Bulford Cup. Final Points

INTER - SCHOOL SWIMMING. On the following Saturday morning, 4th March, we were invited to join Christ Church Grommar, Wesley College and SI. Louis School in an inter-school swimming meeting at the Crawley Baths. The opposition proved to be too strong in most ages and os 0 result we come last.

ASSOCIATED ANNUAL CARNIVAL. Saturday, ) 8th March, was the day on which the 22nd Annual Carnival of the Associated Catholic Colleges of Western Australia was held. C.B.H.S., Highgote, was a(1ain just too st rong for us.

In spite of the fact that there is only one ccurt at the College, tennis has always been o popular game here. On each of two days every week, 0 group of about fi fly boys travel to RObertson Pork courts for games and br coaching. During the year Mr. Stan Edwards retired from coaching to attend to his brother's business in Sydney; he had been our coach for ten years, and we wish him the best of goad fortune in his new sphere.

Mr. Srian Ford is the new coach and we hope that he con produce rhe excellent players who so well proved the excellence of the work of Mr. Edwards.

Tennis was played by the Senior and Junior School in the First and Second Terms, and in the Third Term by the Juniors only. For the most port cJaching and training olternated with Hcuse Competitions in the early port of the yeer. In April the College competed against the other Catholic Colleges, and, under the ccptaincy of Michael Edgley, emerged suc­

cessful from 0 hard fought and closely con­ tested competition. We hod nO players of outstanding brilliance, and cur win was 011 the m:;re meritorious since it depended S::J much en each boy doing his best.

In May we entered 0 number of teams in the Schools Cempetitons, the Slazenger and Mursell, but without success. A very enjoyable aftern:Jon was the sccial match between Vic­ toria Square Convent team and ours. It is hard to know which team actually wen.

Interest in and enjoyment of this year's uicket season were enhanced for our I st X I by the fact that we were able to participate in more matches than has been usual in recent years. Of the eight matches played, four were fixtures in the A.CC Competition. Of these we were victorious in three ond so shored Premiership honours with CB.H.S., Highgote, and SI. Joseph's College, Subiaco.

In the other games we met Aquinas College, St. Louis School, Hole School and the Incogniti Club.

Ray Harrald's captoincy of the team was quietly efficient.

Vice-coptain was John Anderton.

Bowling and fielding, rather than battmg, were the team's strong point.

Pot Volmodre and Roll' Bott formed quite 0 formidable speed attack, each finishing the season with credit­ able figures: Pot captured 19 wickets at on overage 8.4 runs while Roll' bowled 56 avers to take ) 5 wickets for 154. Largely respon-

sible for the succ ss attending the efforts ot the bowlers was the splendid support they received from wicket-keeper Chris Lalor who co-operated in fifteen dismissals (thirteen catches and two stumpingsl.

In each of the Hole and St. Louis matches he was responsible for four dismissals.

Keenness marked the team's fielding which was at its best against SI. Joseph's when from 22 01' rs only 43 runs were conceded.

Best performances in the field were those of Leon Dusei, 0 courageous fielder close to the bot, Ray Harrold, John Allanson and TanI' Baker.

Batting, on the other hand, was not strong.

Competent stroke-makers were few and run­ ning between wickets left much to be desired.

Most consistent with the bot were Ray Horrold cnd Roll' Bott who, generally, could be relied on for 0 sound opening partnership.

Roll' topped the batting averages with on aggregate of 166 runs scored in eight inninqs.

After defeating Fremantle in the opening game, they had a long wait to their next victory.

A. Wilson, who bowled remorkably well in the opening games was kept out later by an unfortunate accident.

Batsmen were inconsistent.

On occasions F. Miller, J. Haoper, D. Pinder and R. Shields batted well, but failures were too frequent.

Unit (Reported by Robert Williomsl Many of the Cadets wh::J attended the N.C.O. and C.U.O courses held 01 Narthom in January and February gained high places in their respective examinations.

All who attended the courses passed with the result that all N.C.O's and C.U.O's. for 1961 were fullv qualified for their rank.

Althsugh the weather was hot, 011 spent an enjoyable camp.

The total strength ef the Unit after the en­ rorments was 104.

This was the largest unit 0: the College in years.

The Anzac Day parade was attended by Capt. Breeley, and was 0 combin d Armv and AT.C. event. Cadets were reminded by Capt Brearley of their duty to their Queen and country.

The weekly parade was held on Monday, from 3.30 p.m. till 5 p.m.

Under the guid­ ance of W.O McGrellis and W.O. Reid from 5 Cadet Brigade, training was varied and inter­ esting.

ThE 196 J Cadet Camp was held in August at Narthom and was attended bv 90 members of the Unit.

From 630 a.m. till 4 p.m. the cadets were kept busy with preparing the huts for inspection, attending lectures, training in the field and other Camp activities.

Most nights were occuDied by lectures, but these were over by 8.30 p.m.

The range practice was very successful, with eight members of the Unit scoring over eighty.

This gave the Unit on excellent rifle team.

The high-light of the Camp was the Sunday March-Post.

The Unit was very prominent in the demonstrotiens, having two Mortar crews and tw..., Vickers Machine-gun crews the most efficient in the Camp.

The Unit's signal sccticn was also the best in Camp, and its services were required often.

The all-day manoeuyre this year was 0 ] S­ mile ccmposs march.

Its course wound south­ wards from the camp and then swung west and finally back to the camp.

The movement was very successful, with no mishaps occurring.

This year the March-Out Parade was held earlier than usual owing to preparations for the new sch~ol.

The parade was held on Langley Park.

The Inspecting Officer was Wing Com­ mander Munney, of the R.AAF. The Army Drill Squad won the drill ccmpetitian for the first time since 1958, and was the result of much hard training under C.UO De Lano.

Although our weapons I' lay teams were beaten the winning of the inter-services cup mode up for these losses.

Prizes were presented after the demonstrations to retirinq under officers, and to the most efficient N.C.O's. and Cadets.

Brother Drake was presented with 0 silver tip­ Ded baton from the C.U.O's. and N.C.O.'s. of 1961 to mark his promotion to Captain.

So ended the 50th and lost year of cadet t,aining at the "Terrace."

We hope the b..,ys of future units at the new school will carry the trorjitinns of the Cadet Unit of the Terrace with them, and keep up its good name.

This year the Unit had a larqe group of first year cadets, about forty in number.

This presented quite a prcblem, but thanks to the enthusiasm and drive of the Officers and N.C.O's. all were successful in being promoted t 1 L.AC. bv the end of the year.

MAY

CAMP.

The May Camp, held at P arce, saw eighty cadets undergo a week cf intensive training.

Half the time was spent at the Pearce bme, while the remainder was spent en a Biv:)ucc s-me miles from the base.

Here the cadets were shown techniques in concealment and ambush and given the opportunity to put this knowledge to a practical test.

The final night was sQent in a realistic night exercise which provided much exci tement from concealed trip fiares and b::cby traps.

RANGE, Range practice this year was very limited The cnly times available were Sundays and to m0st cadets this presented unsurmountable transport prcblems.

A team represented the Flight in the Inter-Squadrcn Sh::et, but was not placed.

C.U.O. AND N.C.O. SCHOOL. These schools were held ot Pearce during the September holidays.

Sgts. Leddin, Fisher and Heppekausen successfully passed the C.U.O's. schcol, and we I~ck f:rward t:> their help next year in the administration of the Ilnit.

This was mast impressive affair.

Both Cadet Units put much time and effort into their preparaticn and the result was mast grotifying, even though we lost the Drill trophy tu the Army.

The first year in the senior School is 0 very vital one indeed.

The boy meets many new and strange sub­ jects: the kind of impact they make on him determines, in most cases, whether or not he ill like the subjects.

A person likE's what he is able to do well, and whether he is able to handle the secondary work will depend on the skills he has acquired in the Junior School.

The J unier School, then, lays the foundat­ ions for success in the Senior School.

Within the Primary Scheol, it is essential that children, as for as they are able, acquire these skills which ore in themselves means in education-namely, the skills of reading, writing and arithmetic. These provide the bases of individual and :::cial living.

I t must be our aim to maintain standards of achievement in every re~pect. It is pleasing to note the number of Junior Scheol boys who ore interested in the Library, and who, os a consequence, ore developi ng a taste for goad literature. Such reading habits will not only faster language control, but will ensure a profitable use of leisure time. Parents hould go out of their way to encourage Library work.

A number of boys with a flair for poetry have sent in contnbuti ns to the Children's Page of the "Record": some of these have been accepted. Several entertaining plays pro­ duced by the b::lys themselves gave vidence of literary talent. As the spoken word will be the most common means of expressi n in adult life, it follows that the children sh::luld be given opportunity in class to practise speech enjoyably and purposefully. Fluency comeS readily to some; to others only after repeated efforts. The gain in confidence is quite noticeable. A good standard of oral recitation was attained. With the assistance of Mrs. I. O'Cannor, a member of our Staff, representatives perform d well at the Chris­ tian Brothers' Eisteddfod. The adjudicator was delighted with the fine quality of voice pro­ duction and interpretation.

Concert Prnrtise,

Play-acting another aspect of speech training-makes 0 ready response in m st beys. It is an important part of education 05 it helps the boy to think quickly, to use his imaginatien, and so to overcome self­ consciousness. Some classes have taged plays to assist the Missions and the Altar B ilding Fund.

The b::ly were seen at their best at the Annual Concert, where items showed a plea­ sant combination of stage poise and choral achievement. The Junior Boys in the massed ~chool choir helped to make the Folk Song rendered, a memorable one for the audience.

While 011 the chOirS did w 11 at the Eisteddfod, special mention must be made of the Junior Choir, whese spirited rendering of "The Hun­ garian Dance", won for C.B.C. the Junior Shield, and from the Adiudicator the high praise of being the best ch ir that hod per­ formed that night. We again dominated the Soloist Section in the Singing, os we won five of the six, besides filling the majority of the minor placings. Success was due, in large measure, to Mrs. M. Kerr, whese thor ugh and patient approach to her task paid rich dividends.

JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORT.

Among the various activities of school life the Junior School pupil regards his games os among those of most importance. Whilst hi, parents and teachers do not altogether agr e with this opinion, they, nevertheless, realize the value of these activities (both for exercIse and character-building) in the life et the growing boy.

Consequently, the Junior School has mode it one of its alms to give its 415 boys one afternoon of sport each week. Dunng this time footb::l 11 , cricket, hockey and tennis ore played, according to the seos::Jn. Swimming ond athletics were ols::l token, and each boy, wherever possible, competed in the respective Carnivals which were held in February and October.

All boys joined in enthusiastically, and be­ sides learning the basic skills, they learned the art et being good sportsmen. In ach sport the better boys in each age group were chosen to represent their school in inter-school competition. There were 3 cricket teams: under 13 A and B and under 12; 5 football t'eams: under 13, under 12 A and B, under 1 I A and B; and one hockey team. Boys w re also chosen for the School Athletic, Swim­ ming and Tennis teams. Whilst we like to see these boys succeed, the more important point is, that whether they win or lose, they ore helped by these activities to become educated gentlemen, a credit to their school and country.

The Brothers and boys are very grateful to Messrs. M. Ericksen, R. Lalor, R. Gallon. P. Tannock and others who gave time from their University studies to help with the umpiring of the School Football; and also to the parents who supplied transport and supported the inter­ school teams so enthusiastically on many occasions.

The Junior team again combined ith the Senior team for the Associated Cath lic Colleges Competition. Although they did not win any trophy the Juniors did very well to ccme second by only 3 ~ points in the Junior Cup and only 6 points in the Relay Cup. Their total of 95~ points helped the Combined Team to win the Aggregate Cup. Besides this competition, the b:JYs ran against De La Salle College, Midland Junction, and against Aquinas Colleqe.

0 points were taken at either of these' meetings, but the C.S.c. team competed with marked success on b:;th occa,ions. Under 1 ~'s John Ferguson and Chris. Waddell j ined the Senior Team in 011 its meetings and finished their ea son well by competing State Schoolboys' Cham­ pionships.

Mention could be mode of the boys who had a very successful season, but it is con­ sidered that these successes were due mainly t.) the team spirit and the competition sup­ plied by their opponents and team-mat s.

Cnce again the team was very well sup­ ported by the many parents who supplied the transp rt and encouraged the competitors by their applause.

As in 011 Junior School sport this year the remarkable feature has been the keenness dis­ played by the boys, both in comperi tion and at training.

The Junior School joined with the Senior School for the Annual School Sports held an Sunday, 1st October, at Gloucester Park. Two records-the Under 11 ) 00 Yards, R. Fer­ qus::Jn 13.6 seconds, and the Under 9 High Jump, P. Shepherd, 3 ft. 5~ ins., were broken and one--the Under 12 High Jump, Francis Clune, 4 ft. 6 ins., was equalled at this meeting.

JUNIOR SWIMMING. The Junior School was well represented at the Associated Catholic Colleges' Swimming Carnival at Crawley Bath on Saturday, 18th March. The Junior team were I vel with C.B.H.S. Highgate at the beginning of the last race but were beaten into second place in that race and consequently lost the Cup b~ the narrow margin of 3 point Special mention should be made of N. Clements, who won 3 ut of his 4 races in the under J 3 section. and G. Lekich, who won 3 out of his 5 races in the under J 2 section.

UNDER 12 CRICKET. The Under Twelves hod quite a good season, winning two matches, against Highgate and Le derville, and lo<ing two, against Subiaco and Clontarf. The team scored 0 total of 237 run, cnd their opponents J 82.

Our main strength lay in our bowlers, especially P. Haves, 13 wickets for 18 runs, G. Parkinson and D. Williams.

The batting was rather incon­ sistent, the most promising batsmen being C. SHjeant, R. Ferguson and D. Williams. Great keenness was shown by all players and this resulted in some excellent catches being taken, especially by S. Branch and p. Haves, and good fielding at all times. The team is very grateful to the parents ha supplied transport and encouraged the team with their applause.

UNDER 13 CRICKET. The way that most boys hod improved their ploy by the end of the season was good proof of their enthusiasm at training.

The team was successful in each of its five games ­ against Aquinas, Highgate, St. Louis School, Subiaco and East Victoria Park.

D. Pinder was the most attractive batsman, with a good array of attacking strokes.

R. hodder was a forceful batsman; and P. Mc­ Portland, V. Hawtin, G. Rcberts and J. Risinger the most promising of the others.

All players had good bowling ability and could command respect.

P. McPartland, D. Pinder, G. Fitzgerald, G. Roberts, G. Hayes and R. Hodder are the best of 0 promising bunch.

The fielding throughout was good, and the­ keeping of J. Risinger xcellent.

UNDER 12 FOOTBALL. Forty-nine boys represented their school in the Under J 2 Football teams this year. The "A" team wan four matches, against Aquinas (twice), Leederville and Subiaco, and lost five, against Highgate (twice), C1ontarf, St. Louis, and Midland Junction.

All matches were closely contested and all players showed great determination. The last game, against High­ gate, was eagerly awaited and showed promise of being the best game of the season. How­ ever, the game had to be postponed because

of inclement weather, and when it was finally played, gale-force winds, sweeoing across Langley Park, spoilt all chances of 0 good gcme. Highgate (undefeated), managed the conditions better and again proved t 0 clever.

Our team, however, awaits next year's games with confidence.

Best players for the season were: P. Jones (45 points), R. Beardman (41), S. Galli (37), and G. Lekich (31).

The most Improved players were: S. Golli and F. Clune; and the most consistent, C. vVaddell, P. Haves and J. Murphy.

R. Botica marked extremely well at times.

After more experience and with better team­ work this team con look forward to 0 ucc ss­ fu l future.

The "B" team wan two out of four matches and displayed great enthusiasm on 011 occas­ ions. Many thanks are due to the parents who suppli d transport and supported the teams S(l well.

UNDER 13 FOOTBALL. As most boys of this age-group w re playing with district teams, it proved difficult to organ­ ise regular practice. so essential if the t om is to combine effectively.

Hence it was not surprising to see, despite some good individual efforts, a lack of determination and team spirit.

There were occasional flashes of bri Iliant football when boys such as B. McDowell, R. Hodder, P. McPartland and D. Pinder pulled down some beautiful marks.

There were glimpses of teamwork too, when our smaller men, G. Fitzgerold, J. Risinger, N. C1ements and G. Raberts made position well.

With 0 more spirited approach to the game, the team may hope to atone for its failure to record 0 victory in its five games for season 196 J.

UNDER 11

FOOTBALL.

The brilliant form shO\vn by all players in the lost match against Aquinas was a pleasing conclusion to 0 successful seas::", the "A" team winning seven of its eight matches, and the "B" team each of its three ~omes.

More significant than these successes was the fact that fifty boys represented their school, and many mOre were eager to hove the chance.

Great skill was shown by many boys.

Bill Alien, Denis Williams, Kevin McDonald and Craig Serjeant took some wonderful finger-tip marks. Terry Stabback, Michael Morey, Tom Veltman, Robert Darnell and Geoffrey Smith ployed witb great determinotion, but 011 spectators were agreed that the diminutive Des Deering deserved the vote for best player of the year.

It is a pity we cannot mention 011 players, os each was effective on some occosion Or others, and the prospects for the future I ok very bright. Thanks to 011 parents who gave their support to the team, and who provided transport.

As 0 man I,ves so shall he die. If the school cnJ the parents co-operate in developing in th, boy proper patterns of good living then their joint obligation will be fulfilled. His primary end in coming to 0 Catholic College i to realise os far as may be the potentialities of mind and heart that are his: he must be­ ceme a Christian Gentleman. The Faith must grow in him until he is an inspiration to those of the circle in which he will move in later life. He must learn the social graces, self­ confidence and a manly regard for others. He should also acquire some ability in the realms of sport, which is of such importance socially.

The main emphasis is, then, on growth and development of mind and body, brain and will.

Now the word development means that in his growth nothing is to remain static. At each age level 0 certain standard will be expected of him, and his success or failure depends on whether he achieves this objective. It is quite unfair to seek in the younger boy 0 pattern of behaviour and on appreciation of responsi­ bility that one is justified in looking for in on older person. BUT, ever more and more is to be expected of him os the boy moves through the classes. I f he does not advance, he is actually falling back since greater demands will be placed on him by the society in which he moves.

And when he does leave school, we hope to find 0 man, courteous and unselfish, confident in his abilities but aware of his deficiencies and willing to learn; he joyfully serves first his Gad in a spirit of Faith, and then his fellow men because in them all he sees the sons of His Father in Heaven, no matter what may be their colour, race Or creed. We ask a lot

of the Christian Gentleman, but many of our Old Boys are all this, and much more besides.

When you place your san in the care of a school, you delegate some of your own per­ sonal duties to the teacher. I t is, primarily, your obligation to educate the family God gives you; He will hold you responsible for failure in this respect. Children have thi expectation, as a natural God-given right, that the family circle will train them towards re­ sponsible adult maturity. I say again that this is a RIGHT they have; and anyone inter­ fering with this, wi 11 hove to answer to God. Most parents just cannot attend to 011 the details of their children's training, and so they enlist the aid of the school. But this does not free them from the grave obligation they are under of taking an enlightened interest in the progress of their bav, and of providing the right atmosphere for 'successful achieve­ ment. The mental climate cf the home is a factor of great importance in school life. Let us in the next few minutes have 0 look at s::me of the factors which play an essential part in the building up of 0 good family spirit.

We, the school, and you, the parents, must collaborate in our joint respomibilities.

0 per­ son is perfect, and no plan of action it with­ out its faults. There is always room for criticism, but such criticism should be charit­ able and constructive. If you do not agree with some line of action taken by the school with regard to your son, it is 0 very bad policy completely undermining authority and disci­ pline, to take him into yeur confidence in the matter. You must uphold the position of those wham you hove asked to look after your child.

He should feel that his parents and his school

are of one mind as far as his training gaes­ that he cannot ploy them off one against the ther. All too many children seek from Mother what Father has refused, and vice verso. The granting of the refused permission by the one i 0 strong criticism in the child's mind of the other parent. Similarly, the boy should not be mode party to differences of opinion between home and school. Any attempt on his port to play the home against the school should be severely dealt with by the parents. Remember that we, the Brothers, are in loco parentis, that is, we are in your place and with your responsibilities as parents while the boy is in our care at the school. Don't let open differ­ ences divide us in the mind of your son.

As your san moves up through the grades, both heme and school must do all they con ill their respective spheres to awaken a sense at personal responsibility in him. This is to be done gradually, as we saw above, by plac­ ing on his shoulders an increasing burden of I esponsibilities. For exampl , at the College, the senior boys shore in the task of main­ taining school discipline through the Prelect System. Others ore captains and organisers of various teams. Boys in the different classes are placed in charge of minor offices. This should be continued in the home. When a tGsk is given, the boy must be called upon, informally perhaps, to give an account of his stewardship. The set task must be such that h.: has every chance of succeeding in it, since nothing is mare depressing and soul killing than constant failure. If he does fail in his duty, sometimes see if you con make him understand the reasons for his failure, especi­ elly if the causes lie in himself. Remember this, the development of this sense of personal responsibility and self-discipline will be one of the most valuable elements in his training that we can give him.

There are one or two areas that afford a cuntinuous and suitable opportunity for train­ ing in self-discipline. First of all, there is the matter of pocket money. This should not b given to him haphazardly, nor in large amounts. At times, on occasional windfall may help to boost his morale, but, in general, cfler the age of twelve or so, he should be required to budget his spending on a definite allowance. Then, secondly, in the matter of home study, he must settle down and keep h'mself to his task with the minimum of parental coercion. If continued failure in this is noted, it should be dealt with vigorously and severely; then the need for repeated action will be obviated. Do not expect on older boy to be able to study with concen­ tration and profit if you hove allowed him tc. do os he pleases when small.

Your son needs training, direction and, at times, coercion. He, like the rest of mankind, including his parents and his teachers, has a touch of the slave in him; he has the mark of Original sin. He is not an angel nor is he a devil, but potentially at least he is 0 bit of each. Parents, and teachers, have to do un­ pleasant things on occasion; the task of direc­ tion and reprimand is hard and thankless. No one likes it. But your s:Jn has a natural right t'l be directed and even punished if need be.

He will net like It, but he expects it, and he will appreciate it much more than the loveless sentimentality that has masqueraded for so long under the cloak of Child Psychology.

We sometimes hear people talking about interfering with the freedom and spontaneity of the child. . of letting him choese for himself of not inflicting on him the blighting influence of physical pain . . and so on. The psychological and sociological absurdity of this sentimental twaddle of tw nty years ago has been exposed by many eminent authorities, by the working experience of count­ less practising teachers, and by the terrible situation which obtains where such ideas ore in force. Any education system, founded wholly or in part on the denial or even the forget­ fulness of Original Sin and of Grace, and rely­ ing an the powers of human nature alone, is unsound. (Pope Pius XI in 1929.) In this category belong those modern systems which appeal to the pretended self-government and unrestrained freedom on the part of the child, and which diminishes or even suppr sses the teacher's authority and action.

Each term you receive a report on vour son's performance. The information which it contains should be carefully studied. just as one swallow does not make a summer, so one does not stamp your son as a genius or as an imbecile. Look for general trends over a num­ ber of reports, and get the views of the varrou, teachers. Where do his weaknesses lie? Is he weak in mathematics) Or in literary subjects) In what subjects does he show special ability) Endeavour to remedy weaknesses early in his school life: and this is just the tim when the parents can step in themselves and assist.

Sometimes parents expect 0 level of achieve­ ment from their son which he just cannot reach. I f pressure is brought to bear, 011 kinds 01 unfortunate results may follow. He may become nervous, locking in confidence, 0 cheat, sly and careless. On the other hand, where the boy's intelligence is well above the overage, he should be encouraged, and coerced if need be, to high achievement.

Before you blame him for bad results, c:-:deave-ur te ascertain for how much he is res pan ible. Sometimes chronic bad health, defective hearing, bad eyesight, emotional

troubles Or excessive shyness may be the trouble. I f this is so, quietly attend to the matter, and then wait for the next report.

But please, do not label him 0 genius or 0 mOron on just one report. And again, maybe he IS no good at school work: but that does not mean that he will be 0 failure os 0 man or that he hasn't 0 brain in his h od. If his lack of success does not stem from sheer lazi­ ness, he will do well later on. The College has 0 good deal more to give him than 0 scholastic certificate. If he acquires some of the social graces, con speak well, is able to hold his own socially at sport, and if he can mix with his fellows, then he will develop into o man of whom we con 011 be proud.

On first examination, it seems that there ore many factors which operate to upset 0 boy in his correct development. But when we analyse the situation, these disturbing factors are only symptoms of 0 much deeper trouble.

Inferiority feelings which lead him to acts of daring and stupidity, stealing, lying, boosting, smoking, runnin'l after girls, serious di obedi­ ence and the like 011 stem from 0 common root, viz., emotional instability. It is 0 fact of everyday experience that one cannot concen­ trate if one's mind' is for away On other things; and to succeed scholastically concen­ tration IS vital. Continued emotional excite­ ment brings in its train other evils, many of which hove 0 serious and d leterious effect

on the boy's future adjustment to his work, to his social life and to his married life.

Training in motionol control must begin very early in the child's life. Temper tantrums, sulking, revenge and the like should not be tolerated. If the home does 011 in its power to preserve on atmosphere of calmness, mutual toleration and self-sacrifice, then when your son comes to us his task of adjustment will be easy. Make no mistake about it, in some respects this power of emotional control is the most valuable quality he con possess. It prepares the way for the development of so many other admirable aspects of character.

And remember, parents, this control is 0 matter of habit which is learned from those with whom he lives: your example is 011 important.

Let us not lose sight of this fact, too, that ii is your task os parents and ours os teachers, to prepare that fledgling of yours to leave the family nest and to be able to set up one for himself. The preparation for this, and the final cutting loose, must be gradual, but none the less definite. It is on injustice to the young mon if he steps out into on unknown world of business and work. To how many parents has not the realisation been sudden that their baby is now 0 boy, and then, SO soon after that, that he is 0 man; that they hove finished for better Or for worse the task that God has given them.

A distinguished "Old Boy", Justice Dunphy of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court, was honoured early in the year when yet another responsibility was added to his already im­ posing list of portfoliOS. The Royal Perth Hospital "News Sheet" of the 27th November, 196 I, congratulated Dr. Neville Hills, MB, BS, Medical Registrar, R.P.H., on his appointment by the Board of Management to the post of Associate in Psychiatry. To Neville, a member of the 1951 Leaving Class, go likewise our congratulations.

When Dennis Matthews set sail for the USA some eighteen months ago to further his Science studies at Philadelphia University, little did he realise that his days as a bachelor were numbered. Dennis' bride is 0 Finnish girl, also in the US on a study course· Others to forsake the single life in the course of 1961 include Dr. Peter Burvill and Jim Lalor, both of whom got off to 0 tine start with the blessings of 0 Nuptial Moss.

Recently Peter left for Scotland, where he i:, now engaged in post-graduate study of medicine. We wish him every success.

Supporters of the C1aremont League team were delighted to have John O'Connell back in W.A this season to lead the "Tigers" ruck. John stood out as 0 conspicuous figure at the "Old Boys'" Re-union and has since been 0 generous worker for the Building Appeal.

Mention of League football recalls that I 96 I has been 0 memorable year for Brian Gray with Swans running out Premiers for the first time ever. Brian, who gave 0 fine performance on the wing, contributed not 0 little to Swans' Grand Final victory.

Playing in his first season of League foot­ boil, Phil Farrell, 0 half-forward flanker for Subiaco, hit the headlines early and performed consistently throughout the season.

John Ragers, 0 member of our 1960 1st XVIII, IS to be congratulated on having won himself 0 place in League ranks with Clare­ mont so soon after leaving school.

This year's "Old Boys" versus First Eighteen match was notable in two respects: first, the very large crowd of "Old Boys" present; second, for the first time in very many years the veterans carried off the laurels. Kevin Edwards led his men to victory in grand style, being well supported by such stalwarts os Glyn Farrell, Pat Gianoncelli, Alex Bonovich and John Horgan os well os 0 very fit group from Teachers' Training College and University.

Speaking of University recalls that if one 01 any time should be looking for George Osborne, there's 0 certain spot in the Uni. library where George can be lacat d at most hours of day Or night. Full marks for assiduity, George.

Another couple of hard-working students ore Paul Steele and Bill Morsell, who, so it has been reported, averages about five hours' study per night. Shall we soy to Terracians contemplating University courses in the future, "Go, thou, and do likewise."

Of the many ex-students of CB.C. at the Teachers' Training Colleges Jim Clarko, Denis Fit%Simons, Kevin Gatti, Don Lee, Keith McMullan and Jim Wilson hope SOOn to graduate. Robert Pollard, Barry Droffin, Mick Winton, Rowlie Melior and Bill Carlson hove just completed their first year of training.

The 1961 hockey season ended in 0 triumph for the C.B.C. Old Boys' hockey club. Its AI team captured premiership honours for the first time since 1956· Five other teams representing the College Old Boys' club played determinedly but foiled to reach the final four. The AI's premiership win was the first time the club hod captured top honours in any grode for several seasons.

In the winning side were: Kershaw de Courtenay (captain), Kevin Corton, Julian Pearce, Eric Pearce, Gordon Pearce, Gene Mapp, Dennis Tobin, Eric Alcock, Brian O'Connor, George Boylen and Pot Kirwan.

Early in the second half of the season the C.B.c. side gained top place but lost it later to Perth. However, it remained in second place until the end of qualifying rounds and when it defeated Perth in the second semi-final, C.B.C. was in its first grand final since 1957.

The club is fortunate in having in its top team 0 combination of experienced players and several young players. Kevin Carton, Eric, Gordon and J ulian Pearce are 011 Olympic representatives and four ~Iayers of the re­ maining seven hove represented Western Aus­ tralia.

Probably the most outstanding player for C. BC. this year was Julian Pearce, who played on the right half-back line. His sound defence and brilliant attacking play were outstanding features of the matches.

Kevin Carton, C.B.C.'s brilliant centre half­ back, brought further honour On the club v:hen he was selected to lead the Australian t om against New Zealand in the test matches. Australia and New Zealand met for the fourteenth time since 1922 in the Man­ ning Memorial Cup. He was also coptain of

the W.A. side that finished in second place in the Australian carnival.

Kevin Carton has 0 brilliant hockey record.

In 1951, 1952, 1953 and 1954 he ployed in Western Australia's colts' team In 1955, 1956, 1958, 1960 and 1961 he played with the State senior side and in 1956 and 1960 he gained selection in the Olympic teams that played in Melbourne and Rome. He was vice-captain of the Rome team.

Other C. B.C. players who played in the 1960 Olympics, Eric, Gardon and Julian Pearce, were not ovailable for State selection this year. Brian O'Connor, another promising A I player for C.BC., gained selection in the State Colts' teom for the second year in succession.

In the A3 grade the C.B.C. team finished in fifth position. Captained by former State player John Metcelf this team bottled hord In the R2 grade the C. B.C. side finished well and was unlucky not to end the season higher up the ladder. Captained by Rabert Stidwell, the R2's side took some time to settle down before winning matches. Harry Duncan, 0 former Kalgoorlie player, was 0 big help later in the season.

Club coach Mr. Cyril Carton and manager Mr. Thornton once again were invaluable and generously gave up their time each Saturday.

Mr. Carton was selected os coach of the State senior hockey team which played in Brisbane.

Mr McGovern, who was' elected club presi­ dent again this year, captained many C. B.C. sides and was 0 member of several premier­ ship teams.

Mr. Martin, also 0 captain for several years, played in several premiership teams.

Both hove retoined their association with the club.

INFORMATION

ENROLMENT: Boys may be enrolled at the College when they ore ready to take their place in Fourth Grade, and thereafter for any grade up to Leaving Certificate. It is with regret that we are not able to take all those who are seeking admis­ sion. Applicants will be entered on a waiting list and they will be notified when a vacancy occurs.

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance and punctuality are of the highest importance; and, in the case of ab­ sence, the teacher in charge of the class should be notified os soon os possible by 'phone Or by letter.

CLASS HOURS: Classes in 011 grades commence at 8.40 a.m. and terminate at 3.30 p.m. During the day there ore two recesses; one of fifteen minutes at 10.45 a.m. and the other at 12.30 for three-quarters of on hour. Unless they hove o special permission, boys ore not allowed outside the grounds ot lunch hour.

The College Tuck Shop caters for 011 normal needs.

PROGRESS REPORTS: A report showing the marks gained in each of the subjects is posted to the parents at the end of each term.

At Trinity College 0 boy is expected to apply himself to study without undue pressure from teacher or parents. It is on important part of o boy's troining that os soon as possible he should be brought to realise that his future ic in his own hands; the best opportunities may be wasted through lock of application end perseverance. The co-operation of the parents is cordially invi ted by the Headmaster.

Lock of interest in study noticed in the home is best remedied by consultation with the College. The Headmaster and the Staff set a high value on personal contacts with the parents. Such meetings very often help to explain peculiarities and difficulties in 0 pupil's character and mental history, and they tend to increase sympathy between teacher and pupil.

If on interview is desired with the Headmaster or one of the members of the Staff, on ap­ pointment should always be mode.

VISITS AND TELEPHONE: Perents are requested to refrain from making telephone calls or vi-.its to the College during school hours unless by appointment Boys are not permitted to be called to the tele­ phone.

CULTURAL TRAINING: Both Speechcraft and Singing ore taught.

Ballroom doncing lessons ore available during the Winter Term. Literary and Debating Societies function in the Senior Classes.

UNIFORM: The use of the full uniform is cempulsory for doily attendance in class and for all public functions in connection with the College. A high standard of neatness in dress is expected of every boy attending the College.

It is strongly recommended that each boy procure a College blazer for sports wear. There is a winter and 0 summer uni form. All clothing can b,' purchased at one of the official sup­ pliers.

These firms are: AHERN'S and WALSH'S. By getting the goods at these firms you are sure of the items being of correct type and quality. Also the sale,men will be able to inform you about points that cannot be set out here.

SPORT: Every pupil in the College, except those who are medically unfit, is expected to take his part in the sporting life of the School, and he must be prepared to do his duty to the full when given the honour of representation in any sporting activity. House competitions are run to cat"r for those boys who ore not selected to take part in inter-school competi­ tions.

In tennis a professional coach visits the School and gives lessons to those who wont them.

Correct attire for the sport being played is required. For general ploy activities and for P.T. the House T-shirt should be used. House badges ore procurable at the College.

ARMED SERVICES: Every boy in the Secondary port of the College who is old enough and in Junior Or above is requi red, un less medica Ily Or other­ wise unfit, to join the College Units. Parades for bath Corps ore held On one afternoon each week.

TERMS: The School year is divided into three terms of practically equal length.

The terms usually commence on the Tuesday nearest the follow­ ing dotes: February 9th, May 25th, September 7th.

There is ,(] vocation of two weeks between the first and second, and between the second and third terms.

The Christmas vocation is of about eight weeks' duration.

SCHOOL BOOKS: All class texts and stationery should be ob­ I'ained from the College Book Room. This is under the supervision of Messrs. Pellegrini & Co. who will see that the books supplied ore the correct ones and that they will be there when they ore wonted. Purchases ore strictly cosh.

CONDITIONS OF ENROLMENT: Enrolment and continuance of enrolment at the College is entirely at the discretion of the College Council.

Enrolment implies willingness to submit to College discipline and regulations, and to attend College functions when required.
