Headmaster's Report 1960 (67th Annual Report) Christian Brothers' College P rth, has been a notable landmark in this city since 1894.

Not without dignity it has enhanced the charm of St. George's Terrac for sixty yeors and more.

Even so, Perth is, and must ever be, indebted to the school for other, immater­ ial, reasons.

It is not easy to-day in this raDidlv expand­ Inq metropolis to conceive the significance of C.B.Cs. contribution to the formation of its character.

Since the lost annual report 0 certain interesting, I might say exciting, turn of events, of which none pr ent con be un­ aware, has come upon us and that urges me to dwell 0 little an some of the physical and spiritual aspects of the school.

The very expansion of our city which I r~ve mentioned has involved us in its relentless progress. Soon the dignified landmark which is C.B.C. will be no more and concerning that, of course, there ore sure to be mixed feelinas.

That element in our midst which reveres "the good old days" and who is untinged with sentiment' will watch its passing with regret. Old boys of 0 vintage prior to 1939 especiallv will doubtless experience 0 pang.

Yet, while we qaze nostalgically into the past there are brightening prospects ahead.

It cannot be denied that 60 year old buildings some of which have been conv rted to a com­ pletely foreign use from that for which they were planned, are out of harmony with pre­ sent day educational r quir ments. Thev are inadequate in many respects and costly to maintain. They have served their purpose long and well and now it must be advantag­ eous to both teacher and pupil to work in new and well designed surroundings where an atmosphere of spaciousness will "open win­ dows in the mind."

We know the unique position the school hod in the post of being one of the four establish­ ments which provided the only secondary education to be had in the formative years of this State. The State Government did not venture into the field of secondary education in W.A. until 1912 with the establishment of Modern School. Before that time the honour of providing the way to higher education was

shored by Hale School, Scotch College, Guilci­ ford Grammar School and C. B.C. Much of what was good, solid, and enduring in the professional, commercial and industrial life of Perth wo the result of the opportunities afforded by these private schools, Indeed so few were the opportunities for higher edu­ cation here in those days that C. B.C. was never without large numbers of non-Catholic students who readily and gratefully ascribe to their old school their ofter success in life.

We can therefore lock back on a brave post and a proud tradition and wonder at the SDirit of the men of those days; men of the calibre of Broth rs Nunan, Hanrahan, O'Mullane and Power, the influence of whose personalities was destined, as it happens. to extend far bey2nd the walls of C.B.C. Haw many temporal and eternal destinies were decided there where parents sacrificed so much and the old Brothers worked so hard' Soon the memorial of themselves which they left in bricks and mortar will have qone the way of 011 transitory things, but the school they built will not die.

It is Our desire and firm pur­ pose to preserve and carry away to other, more spacious surroundings the thing they gave us mast worth preserving. the soul of the school its traditions and honoured name.

Until September f next year, school busi­ ness will proceed at St. George's Terrace with­ out interruption.

None of the present build­ ings will be demolished and we shall hove the full use of them except far a few roams in the Science Wing. When the school transfers to the new site for the third term of next year, the Brothers' residence, the administration section and the class-roams will be complete and ready far occupancy. The Chapel and Sports Pavilion will still be in course of erection.

RELIGIOUS

TRAINING.

It is on occasion of some gratification to me to report to you parents that I believe a spirit of real, virile piety pervades the school.

to foster this healthy Catholic mind os did the vorieus societies which enoble the boys t toke port in Apostolic work: The Junior Conference of the St. Vincent de Poul Society. the Crusoders of the Blessed Sacroment and the Deminic Savia Club.

Boys in 011 classes hove mode their usual generous contributions to­ wards the support of the Pontifical Mission Aid Societies.

We ore much indebted to the College Chaplain, Father W. Foley, fer his constant Interest in and attention to the spiritual wel­ fare of the boys, os we are also to Mgr. Hagan and his assistant priests of the Cathedral Parish for their readiness to help the boys at all times.

Taking the world os it is to-day, and con­ sidering the gen'Jine though perhaps unosten­ tatious earnestness of our boys about the things of God, I think it but fair to congratu­ lote you, their parents, bath on the training you hove provided in your homes and on the Willingness with which you make sacrifices to provide your sons with 0 thoroughly moral education.

Our religious leaders hove never hod any doubts about the importance of r ligious in­ fluences in education; we ore not so accus­ tomed to hearing like sentiments from our political leaders.

Hawev r, you may hove l,bserved recent statements by bath our Own Prime Minister and the President of the USA. emphasising their lock of confidence in any system of education devoid of religion and their firm conviction that moral instruct­ ion is on essential part of education.

This being sa, you may derive much consolation

frem the knowledge that you ore doing your part dutifully and that by and large, your boys ore building their lives on 0 firm foundation of Catholic morality.

Year by year, we ore pleased to see some few students dedicate their lives to Gad and His Church in the priestly and religieus state.

Lost January, Father Gregory Brophy, S.J.. was ordained in St. Mary's Cathedral, and while congratulating him on such 0 wonderful grace, I feel that we may congratulate our­ selves that Gad continues to favour the school by choosing some of his elite from amongst us.

Phi lip Hosemann. who was Dux of the College lost year joined C.B.C. post student, Peter Steele, at the Jesuit Fathers' Novitiate, Watsonia, Victoria, early this year.

At the present time there ore twenty old boy stud­ ents for the priesthood in various place and six at the Christian Brothers' training estab­ lishment in Victoria.

On behalf of the school, I very sincerely congratulate the Parish Priest of East Vic­ toria Pork, Mgr. Frank O'Cannor, an old bay of the school, recently honoured by His Holi­ ness the Pope with the dignity of DJmestic Prelate.

FAREWELLS. At the close of 1959 my immediate pre­ decessor, Br. A. D. Collapy. completed his term of office at C.B.C. His period of adminis­ tration was in the tradition of the great and good men who went before him.

The healthy tone of the school witnessed to by the number of priestly and religious vocations and the admirable examination results, was of course,

largely the result of his careful and enlighten­ ed direction.

It is regrettable that as a re­ sult of the latest developments what would have been a manument to Br. Callopy's cour­ age and ability will so soon ofter completion, be demolished.

We wish Br. Collopy ,"cll in his future assignments while we remember with gratitude his work for C.B.C. After a spon of fifty-five years' ossoci­ otien with the College, fir t os pupil and then as teacher, Mr. Syd Kelly retired from active work at the beginning of this year.

To sa loyal and devoted 0 servant of the young, for such he made himself, we have nothing but odmirotion and thanks.

While Mr. Kelly is missed at the school, we appreciate that he has earned the peace of his retirement. May he long be spared to enjoy it.

SCHOLASTIC

WORK.

The Roil-coli for this year is 830, of whom 420 ore in the secondary classes and 410 are in the primary.

Enrolments for the New Year will again be very limited.

We regret our inability to accept all who desire to enrol at the College. but accommodation is resticted to present numbers.

Examination results for 1959 were parti­ cularly satisfactory.

Twenty-five Leaving Certificates were secured, and twenty-one boys matriculated; of them, thirteen have enter d the University on courses in Arts, Law, Medi­ cine, Science and Engineering.

Best passes were gained by Philip Hosemann and Livio Mina, each with five distinctions.

One boy gained a Duntroon Entronce and five others secured Commonwealth Scholarships.

Seventy-seven complete and nine partial passes were gained in the Ju.,ior Examination.

Four boys were awarded Teacher Bursaries, each valued at £80 per year, and one bay won a Lynn Scholarshi;:l. '. t the Secend Year Junior Standard, £irhty-two gained posses.

Outstanding re­ s'll's were thcs= of Tany Baker, who with six rhti",rtions, took sixth place in the aggregate, and Terry Smith with six distinctions, eighth in the aggregate.

In the First Y£or, 95 b::ys pmsed. the best being Laurence Besley, third in the State with nine distincticns, and Groham Markey and Michael Whitely, Each with seven distinctions.

While we cannot but feel satisfied with the really fine quality of these results, I must re­ state emphatically, a fact with which you must be quite familiar already.

It is this.

In the professional business and industrial world of te-doy life is highly competitive.

The prize gees to him who by industry and self discioline has fitted himself with the highest qualificat­ iens.

In view of this, need I lab:>ur the necessity for parents being firm in requ'ring their boys to lead while at school. a stude·~t's life.

There is little hope of boys maintaining a spirit of study if they are continually dis­ tracted by too many extra-school activities.

Consequently, I exhort parents not to pull dawn with one hand what they build with the other.

If you are sacrificing so much to give your scns the best education yeu can you ought· also insist that they apply themselves without distractions to serious work.

Long ond unsupervised T. V. sessions, fre­ quent outings, clubs, sporting competitions rutside the school, dances and other s:>cial functions unfit the young mind for disciplined study, end study without discipline is a pre­ tence and the would-be student is deceivinq himself. ­ We are very pleased with the success of our Old Boys at the University.

In 1959 there were ten graduates.

In the faculty of Arts: Rev. Br. Michael Doyle and Eric Alcock; in Agriculture, David Chatel; in Engineering: Brendan Joyce and Brian Lalor, both with Honours; in Law: Nevi lie Smythe; in Medicin Andy Luketina; in Science: Greg Tannock, Jim Lalor (Honours), and Dennis Matthews (Honours).

Dennis is now furthering his studies in U.5.A. At the Melbourne University, Old BOIi Brothers Anthony Curtis, John Keogh and Owen Stanley secured results of high standard.

Brother Curtis gained First Class Honours in Philosophy and fifth place in the Universitv.

At present there are fifty-five ex C.B.C. boys at the Universiry.

To all of these I extend hearty congratu­ lations: they form 0 group of young men of whom any school might be well proud.

PREFECTS. His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Rafferty hon­ oured the school with a visit early in the year.

On the occosion he blessed and presented badges to the newly appointed members of the Prefects' Ceunci I. The Head Pref ct and College Captain for 1960 is James Farrell who has discharged his office honourably and with dignity.

He was assisted by Lau,ie Fisher, Kevin Hedges, Alex Mirmikides, Teny Marrion, Kevin Cram­ bie, Itala Paganin, Barry Draffin, Peter Dud­ ley, John Edgar, Brian Shields and David Haigh each of whom has earned my cordial esteem ond gratitude for his co-operation and help at 011 times.

ACTIVITIES.

MUSIC, singing, ballroom dancing, deboting, and oratcry hove all been prometed during the year.

Our boys hod 0 good measure of success in various singing competitions.

In the City of Perth Music Festival, the College Choir was second to Scotch College, and in the Christian Brothers' Eisteddfod we gained first place in the aggregate choral and elocution contests.

Individual awards were gained by John Gasi­ crawski (open solo), John Waddell (Under 14 solo), Brian Parkinsan (Under 13 solo), and Chris Waddell (Under 1 1 soloL Fred Miller and Michael Petkovich won the open duet.

Ballroom dancing was expertly taught by Mi,s Kav Gilkisan and Mr. Sam Gilkison.

As o result,' the School Dance at Anzac House and the Prefects' Dance in the College Hall were notably enjoyable functions.

Both dances were organised by the Prefects.

I must ex­ press great satisfaction wi th the assurance these young men displayed in their arrange­ ments and in the decorum with which they carried them out.

The prizes for the most improved dancers were awarded to Laurie Fisher (Senior) and Paul Coronel (J uniorJ. This year the Literary and Debating Saciety was reconstituted and 011 enior bays took part in debating or some form of public speaking.

Guest speakers from th Rostrum Club and the W.A Debating League generously came along to adjudicate and to give voluable as­ sistance and odvice.

President of the Society was Laurence Fisher.

The College also took port in inter-school contests and finished well up in the final placings of the W.A. Secondary Schaols' Debating Federation.

An annual award has been inaugurated to be known as the Brother M. P. Nunan Award for Public Speaking.

This year's aword goes to Laurence Fisher, whi 1st Timothy Delaney wOn the Junior Trophy.

CADETS, The combined voluntory enrolment of the Army ond AT.C. Codet Units wos one hun­ dred ond seventy which r flects the pepularity of this kind of troining.

Interest and enthus­ iasm on the port of officers and other ranks has been consistently keen os was demonstrat­ ed in the various occasions when the units called specia I parades.

The Units under the capable direction of Rev. Bres. Travers, Drake, Carrigg and Trem­ bath maintained their high reputatien.

Those present at our Marching Out Parade last Sun­ day will know that I om not giving praise un­ deservedly.

SPORTING

ACTIVITIES.

The phy,ical aspect of education has been well catered fer during the year. great interest being manifested in wimming, tennis, hand­ ball, football, hockey, athletics, gymnastics.

I n the field of inter-schoel competitive spart, C.B.C. had fair success.

Our boys per­ fermed creditably in all branches. taking the hcnours in Senior Football and Cricket.

In athletics, cur representatives were successful in taking the aggregate, senior and inter­ mediate trc-phies.

Within the College, the House System creat­ ed great rivalry in the various sports and com­ petition was very keen.

The House Captains were David Haig (Chanel), Peter Dudle (Queens), Jim Farrell (Xavierl, and John Raoers (CampionL Campien House took the honours in Foot ball, Hockey and Athletics, while Queens pre­ vailed in Swimming.

The champion House for 1960 is therefore Campian.

CONCLUSION. I welccme this opportunity of expressing in o very special way, my sincere thanks to the men and women of the various committees cnd their many helpers for their truly magni­ ficent work for the College throughaut the year.

I must pay 0 sincere tribute to the work done, week in week out, by the Tuck Shop Ladies, with Mrs. Lalar os President, and Mrs. Rowe os Secretory, for their uninterrupted year of service to the College.

Only one who sees the amount of work done is in 0 position to oppreciote fully the sterling volue of the efforts of these lodies.

My sincere thonks go to the stoff Brothers and Loy teachers, for their loyal co­ operation and unstinted service at 011 times.

Despite numerous calls on their energies, they gave of thei r best.

I must also thank the Perth City Council the donors to the Prize Fund, and 011 yo~ parents for your willing support and co-oper­ ation during the yeor.

Eorly this year it was decided to overhoul the Hcuse system in existence ot CB.C The large enrolment in every department of the Cell ge had made it increasingly difficult to organise for sporting and other activities.

While 0 few of the betler athletics were receiving excellent coaching and opportunities to develop themselves by competition, it was felt that the large majority were not being brought into the vigorous climote of competition.

Too many w re spectators.

To remedy this situation the school was divided into four Houses, and each boy was put in one of them.

Experience of other Colleges has shown that if a family can build up 0 loyalty to a particular House, then the boys will benefit much.

With this in view, brothers and cousins were entered under the some flag.

In the future, it is proposed to keep family members, new ones included, in the same House; and boys will be members of the some House for the whole period of their time at C.B.C. An essential part cf 0 senior bey's training, is the undertaking of various responsible functions in the life of the school.

The Army and the Air Force Cadets, leadership in sporting teams, deb~tes and the like, 011 afford opportunity for experience in command.

The efficient running of the House System places heavy demands on the zeal and competency of the leaders in th various divisions.

This first year has been 0 difficult one, but the Seniors hove responded well to the challenge: they hove set a standard for those coming after them.

Externols play 0 big part in the development of team spirit.

Much time went into the design of badges and selection cf suitoble names for the fcur Houses.

Mr. Jack Corroll, of Ahern's, kindly helped in Ihe production of distinctive ond colourful gym shirts.

Philips and Tacey, of London, were responsible for the making of the Bodges.

The result has been gratifying to all, and wh n the new singlets and badges made their first appearance at the Athletic Spcrts we realised what a unifying influence had been created.

In the coming year it is hoped that House Banners will be made.

As far as the competitions were concerned Campion House wos supreme.

InterHouse rivalry extended down through the whole school, and every bay knew that by his own personal effort he could help his team.

In like manner, his failure to co-operate weokened his team's prospect of success.

Excitement and keenness in the results of even the most junior team in the College proved that the great majari ty of the lads were no longer just spectators.

The Pr;mary Department of the CJlleg prepares the junior boys of C.S.c. for the im­ pertont step they must taken when they enter th senior school.

In the First and Second Y ars, or the middle school, the lad meets for th first time many strange new subjects.

On hi reaction to them will depend in large measure his future scholastic success.

I t is fairly safe to say that, for most boys, special aptitudes and praficiencies begin to manifest themselves in these two years.

Habits of study formed, attitudes to various subjects, re­ acticns towards teachers will all tend to hard­ en os the years go on.

The bewilderment sometimes experienced with subjects like Latin, Algebra, Geometry and others, suddenly clears up if he will but persevere at his work.

This r quires will-power on the port of the boy, and sympathetic encouragement f,om the adults around him.

If he does not persevere at these subjects which he thinks so diHicult, then he will find himself in trouble.

This sort of thing will develop in him on inferiority complex, and he will descend to 011 kinds of subterfuges to satisfy the ambitions of parents and the demands of teachers.

The First and Second Year b")y has develop­ mental problems of 0 physical and of a psychological nature which demand under­ standing from 011 who ore concerned with his welfare.

When he leaves th Second year to enter the Junior, his scholastic future con be forecast fairly certainly.

The Junior is 0 key year in the sense that he must measure up to the demands of a public examination.

This challenge acts os o spur to endeavour, each boy realising that his future career hinges in no small way on his success.

Much has been written ab")ut the so-called "evils" of public examinations; but to the practical teacher who knows the added zest and drive which they bring into the school room, such arguments sink into in­ significance.

From Junior the successful student either leaves school to seek 0 situation, Or he decides to complete his Leaving Certificate.

In the sub-leaving year he has nO serious examination pressure, and opportuni ty is token to remedy defects and gaps in knowledge and abilities acquired in earli r school life.

Also eHort is mode to inculcate on appreciation of the wider and deeper problems of life, and on understanding of the views of other people.

Religion, History and Literature oHord excel­ lent vehicles by which this may be done.

A solid basis of the sciences and mathematics is laid for final development in Leaving year. In the sub-leaving many of the boys get the op­ portunity to exercise leadership and to hold

If 0 boy enters into the sub-leaving year in the right spirit, he can have an enjoyable and beneficial year.

He must work hard play hard and co-operate with his fellows and with the College staH. This will require personal sacrifice.

A headmaster of a New South Wales College said recently at his speech night:­ "The student vocation pre-suppores a bal­ anced living, particularity in the last years at school.

The social pleasures of the wage-earner, th supposed individual­ ity of dress, which is only too frequently exhibitionist uniform chosen uncritically through some vague hero - worship, the ability to 'roll one's own', the foolish practice permitted by unwise parents of some schoolboys of 'going steady,' however uncertainly: these find no place in the abundant living of the growing bay" The hope of the College li s in its final year.

The boys who are about to leave the school with many years of training behind them, face a rigorous trial which is two-fold.

One is the hurdle of the leaving certificate; and the other, more subtle, more trying and far more searching, is on examination by the world into which they move.

Upon the thoroughness of their application will depend success in the first: upon the sort of man they have made of themselves during their long period of school days, will depend success in the second.

(Reported by L. Fi her, L.C. Blue) A glance threugh the College Annals shows o quite remarkoble link between aptitude fer public speaking and success in after life.

This is not surprising when it is borne in mind that public speaking is one of the m st effect­ ive ways of developing and expressing person­ ality.

There is to-day on ever increasing awareness of the need for the educated person to be able to e press his ideas before on audience, and inter-school debating in par­ ticulor provides the senior students with on opportunity for mixing with 0 brood selection of their fellow students and discussing with them topics of current interest.

With these aims in view, the initial meeting of the College Literary and Debating Society was held and 0 policy for the future laid down.

It was decided to devote the whole of the first term to class debates in which every member of the Leaving Classes was call d Up:ln to debate or speak to some other purpose at least once. The duties of chairman were also dis­ charged by different individuals in order to give all the widest scope possible for partici­ pation.

Prior to the commencement of the second term, it was unanimously decided to enter the Secondary Schools' Debating Feder­ ation competition.

The Federation debates consisted of four rounds, two of the debates being held at C. B.C. and two at other colleges.

In the draw C. B. C. was opposed to Perth College (the eventual winners), Mt. Lawley High School, St. Mary's Church of Englar.d Grammar School and Methodist Ladies' Coi­ I ge, Claremant. We were successful in win­ ning two of these debates and our teams were complimented by all adjudicators on the spirit in which they competed.

During the first term the College hed the pleasure of being offered the ser­ vices of a number of people who performed the task of adjudication, giving also to the Society members the benefit of their experience in the finer points of public speaking. Those whom the College wishes in particular to thank ore Miss L. Mayrhofer, Mr. Peter Turvey, Mr. Richard Stevens and Mr. Sounders.

During the second term a number of non­ competitive debates were held.

Schools against which C.B.C. debated were Our Lady's Coil ge, Victoria Square, Loreto Convent, Ned­ lands, Methodist Ladies' College and Aquinos College.

Kevin Hedges won the open recitation of a selection frem Shakespeare at the Christian Brothers' Ei steddfed and we were 0 Iso repre­ sented in the public speaking contest conduct­ ed by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

The thanks f the Committee are due to all who helped to moke the Society a success, ond in particulor to the members of the Leaving Closses whose enthusiasm and help was much appreciated. A special word of thanks must go to the Hon. Secretary, Kevin Hodges, and to the Social Committee whose task it was to arronge Iight refreshments after the debates.

MUSIC GROUP (Reported by D. Trovers, L.C. Blue) The music group is 0 body of senior students of the College which meets in the school lib­ rary at lunch time on Wednesdays. The main purpose of this bedy is to establish a basic appreciation of music amongst the students and to provide 0 contrast to the type of music which is so populor amongst the youth of to­ day.

There ore six permanent members, includ­ ing on executive of president and secretary, and at every session each member is per­ mitted to invite 0 guest.

This is the first year thot this group has been in operation, and it has proved itself to be of greot volue to those concerned.

Each session commences with a prayer to Saint Cecilia, who was odapted os the patron­ ess of the group. This is followed by a dis­ cussion of any general business.

After this the members and guests listen to the music, which was selected at the previous session, and later discuss it. Once the programme

for the following week hos been arranged the session closes with a prayer.

On various occasions throughout the year the group was fortunate enough to have the principal and other members of the stoff os its guests. The group also organised parties within the school to attend various youth con­ certs conducted by the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra and other simi lar function.s The group is greatly indebted to Rev. Bro. Mannian who was of considerable assistance to the group in its early stages and through­ out the year, and also to the president, Kevin Hodges, who was largely responsible for the group's establishment.

Bro. Monnion was also responsible for the construction of 0 com­ pact record player which wos of great benefit to the group. The members provide most of the records played at the various sessions, although some were borrowed from the school.

It is to be hoped that future members of the group, os post members hove done, will continue to discover the real pleasure that music con provide.

DANCE.

The social side of school life was well cater­ ed for during the year, particular attention being given to the art of dancing.

Not only do the Brothers see to Our intel­ lectual advancement but they take great care to have us so trained in the cultural arts that we be socially competent On leaving school.

So it was that Rev. Br. Kelly, the Headmaster, urged the senior boys to join the dancing classes, conducted by the well-known profes­ sional teacher, Mr. Sam Gilkison.

For the last feur lessons we were fortunate to have the girls from Our Lady's College, Victoria Square, as practising partners.

We are groteful for their co-operation and patience.

Anzac Hall was the scene of our College Dance.

It had just been renovated and pro­ vided an excellent floor and ample accom­ modation.

Most boys from the Junior, Sub­ Leaving, and Leaving classes attended and they, with their partners, were received at the entrance by Br. Kelly and Miss Kay Gilkison.

AbClut 250 were present.

The evening was on outstanding success, helped on by the bright and enjoyable music provided by The Downbeat Rhythm Group.

Mr. Sam Gilkison, as Master of Ceremonies, kept the dances flowing nicely.

Here I would like to thank Mr. Gilkison, his daughter, Kay, and his assistants for the remarkable floor shows they gave during the evening.

The Ladies' Committee excelled themselves with 0 very tasty supper and merit our warm­ est thanks After supper Br. Kelly expressed

his gratitude to the ladies for their help, and he complimented Mr. Gilkison on his skilful training of the boys as shown by their easy poise and sense of rhythm.

During his reply Mr. Gilkison remarked that the dance was the best school dance he had ever attended.

The Prefects' Dance WEDNESDAY,

Unlike Anzac Hall in which decor is not permitt d, the College Hall offered plenty of scope for decoration and we were determined to make the most of it particularly os this Prefects' Dance would be the last of many held in the old hall.

After much discussion about decorations we decided upon an oriental theme.

Mrs. Smith of the College staff was of great assistance to us.

She painted lanterns and vases in Japan­ ese taste cherry blossoms predominating, and gave us much artistic advice.

Again The Downbeats play d and Mr. Sam It was particularly Gilkis::>n acted as M.C. plea,ing to see a big number of representatives of other Colleges attending the dance, and especially welcome were a number of last year's prefects, amongst whom was Peter Jacoby, Head Prefect for 1959.

In a short address after supper, Br. Kelly thanked the Ladies' Committee and Mr. Gilkis­ an for thei r co-operation wi th the Prefects in making the dance such 0 successful one. Then just on midnight the National Anthem closed for the lost time the long line of memorable Prefects' Dances held in the hall at C.B.C., St George' s Terrace.

In actuol foct, the amount of know­ ledge the primary boy acquires is not very important, but of paramount importance ore the attitudes of mind and the habits develop­ ed in these formative years.

Sometimes teachers in the senior school meet a boy of goed intelligence but whose performonce is lamentably bad, and they find themselves powerless to improve matters.

In nine cases out of ten the cause lies in hi primory Or pre-primary year. A very close callab:::ration must exist between the home ond the ~ch'Jol. The boy has only one childhood; it must net be misspent.

His whole future in time and in eternity will be determined principolly by what goes on in the doys of his pre·ad'Jles­ cence.

The school can build only on the foundot­ ions laid in the home. The teocher under­ takes some of the duties and the obligations which by noture devolve on the porents: he d:::es not replace the parents. A dangerous idea seems to hove develeped in the minds ef

Eisteddfod and Concert "GAVOTTE"

BECKY THATCHER" Over the years a tradition af excellence in singing has been developed at the College.

This is, in no small measure, due ta the ex­ ample and inspiration given ta the rest of the school by the members of the Cathedral Boys' Choir. .

This year our Callege toak part in the Festi­ val of Perth. Scotch College defeated uS by the margin of one point. In the open solo for boys, John Waddell was first and John Gasiorowski was second. In the recent Chris­ tian Brothers' Eisteddfodt held at the Capitol Theatre, we were very successful in the vocal solos and in the elocution, but our cho;rs were not able to secure a first place in any section.

Thanks to the kindness of the manager (Mr. E. Edgley) we were able to hold Our Concert and Speech Night in His Mojesty's Theatre.

Every facility for the convenience of the audi­ ence and far the successful presentotion of the items was made available. The College is most grateful to Mr. Edgley.

Especially. too, are we deeply appreciative of the fine work done with the make-up by Mr. and Mrs. Megaw.

In all, they made up the boys on three occa­ sions-truly a herculean effort when the num­ bers involved are considered.

To the Patch Theatre our thanks for sundry costumes and ballet shoes.

The School Choir under the baton of the Rev. Br. H. D. Fogarty sang "Say Ye Who Borrow" (Mozart) and "Evening Prayer" (Hum­ perdinckl. The delightful rendering was much appreciated.

Laurie Fisher, gave us an extract from Burke's indictment of Warren Hastings.

The small boys of Grades Four and Five pleased everyone with their colourful costumes, vigorous activity and happy sing­ ing when they entertained us with their action

song "'Parade of 24th Regiment". A wonder­ ful tribute to the work of Mrs. O'Connor.

The central item of the evening was the presentatian of the musical play "Tom Sawyer."

Outstanding ability was shown by Bruce Mc­ Dowell in the principal part of Tom Sowyer; he sustained the difficult role in a manner which points to high achievement in future productions.

Others whose stage appearance was shorter, but who gave excellent renditions were John Murphy (Schoolmaster), Robin Mur­ ray (Preacher), Chris Waddell (Huckleberry Finn), and as a most impressive Aunt Polly, Mlchael Whitely.

The various choruses and "bit" pieces were well done.

The aid-time gavotte to be done by the Sixth Graders had to be abandoned as one of the star performers decided to go to hospital an hour before the concert.

If the beautiful costumes. and the preliminary work done by the. dancing teacher, Mrs. O'Connor, was an Indication, then it would have been worth seeing.

Michael Petkovich and Fr d Miller held the audience enthralled with their exquisite rendi­ tion of the duet "Under the Linden Tree". It is hard to conceive how the beauty of thei r singing could be surpassed.

The Senior Literary and Debating Saciety presented an excerpt from "Twelfth Night", which IS being studied by the Leaving Class.

The selection chosen required considerable skill in the presentation of the character of Malvolio and this was well executed by Kevin Hodges.

However, the support given in par­ ticular by Graeme Plummer as Sir Andrew Aguecheek delighted the audience, and the two were ably seconded by Paul de Lano as Sir Toby Belch, Bill Riley as Fabian and Des T ravers as the mercurial Maria.

Choir St. Mary's Cathedral always pos­ sessed 0 fine choir, but until 1938 it was cemposed of mixed men's and women's voices.

In 1928, the first 011 mole choir (knewn os the Societv of St. Cecilia) was formed and con'­ ducted by the Rev. Fr. Alb rt Lynch.

The Choir consisted of thirty tenors and bosses who song for the ceremonies of 1938.

That some year, through the generosity and co-oper­ ation of the Brothers, His Grace was able to found o boys' choir-to be based on on education scholarship system for suitable boys to be train­ ed at Christian Brothers' CJllege.

Fr. Lynch trained the bays in singing and music.

On Easter Sunday evening of that year at devotions they were joined by members of the Society of St. Cecilia, and the present form of the Choir was established In 1939 the newly constituted Cathedral Choir took over 011 the music of the Cathedral.

Ours was the first Choir in Aus­ tralia to do this-ante-doting Melbourne by one year.

The music of the old Polvphonic Masters such os Palestrina, Victeria and Byrd were regularly sung (probably for the first time) os well os liturgical modern works.

Dr. C. Edgar Ford, who fer 0 while was organist, wrote one of most not­ able medern Mosses for the Choir.

The recent appoint­ ment of Fr. McCudden os Parish Priest of Floreat Pork has impcs~d on him new and onerous duties which place heavy demands on his time.

The Choir Boys are selected at on audition conducted by the choir-master towards the end of each year.

From the applicants four or five are chosen to fill the vacancies.

These lads are awarded 0 scholarship at the College.

They study 011 the normal school subjects, and sit for me ordinary exams.

In addition, they receive o trOlnlng in music, and their voices ore d velop­ ed under expert core.

Choir practice begins each morning at 8.30 and continues for three-quarters at on hcur.

Special arrangements ore, of course, mode for practice during vocations.

The boys sing at the main functions in the Cathedral: their reputation is now world-wide.

The ch:ir-moster tries to instil into each of the members on appreciation of the importance of n:s vocation os One wh:J sings God's glories, and os one wh:J is privileged to serve in Ged's own House.

He has been given 0 wonderful voice by Ged; and Gad expects him to use it to create u thing of b auty that will lift the hearts of 011 whc hear it to heavenly things.

C.B.C. is honoured by its association with the, Choir, and long may that ass(:ciatien continuE'.

This is the twenty-lirst anniversary of the Choir's fermation, and we wi h it many, many more vears of joyous service to God.

Our Lay- Teachers The College has bee:< well served during the year by the lay-members of the te:JChing staff.

They hove loyally bo 'ne a large part of tne work associated with the runni -g of a big school.

Work, both in foe cl:Jssra::>m and extra-curricular activities, has been well d::>ne by them.

Their special tale:<ts and tra'nin>l have always been readily available. The Brot:,­ ers want to express their very s'nce,e thanks for a year of productive co-operation.

With numbers rising so ra~idly in all of our schools, and because religious vocations do n t seem to be being answered in the sa'Tle ratio, the vocation of a lay-teacher, living in the world and caring far a family, has come to be an importar.t factor in :he scheme of Catho­ lic education.

This vacation is 0 wonderful one, and one that is abundantly blessed by God-a vocation where the knowledge and love of God is imparted with secular knowl­ edge.

Family obligations and personal com­ mitments of all kinds make it but just that the lay-teacher should receive a salary at least comparable with that given in the State school system.

This is imposing, and will continue to impose a heavy financial burden on the

When the numbers in the classroom were smaller, mast of the teaching ceuld be d::>ne by religieus.

Now, however, the situation is quite different, and the 101'­ teacher will be asked to undertake a share in Catholic eduC:Jtion that is of increasing im­ portance. \/lie all should pray for these three things:­

1.

An increase in the number of vocations t::> the religious life.

2.

An increase in the number af vocations to the li fe of a lay-teacher in the Cathol ic school.

3.

That the great financial burdens, so unjustly inflicted On people who send their children to private schools, may be removed.

The work of the schools is a ioint effort now, a fact that the teaching religious accepts joy­ fully.

It is going to bring money troubles, but God will provide os He has done in the past.

May He send us many mare loyal workers la assist us in the vineyard of the schoolraom.

The first Jesu:t Ordlnatien in Western Australia was of on Old Boy of the Terrace.

He is the Reverend Father Gregory Francis Brophy, S.J., who was Ordained at St. Mary's Cathedral, Perth, an 9th January, 1960.

Reverend Father Bertram Adderley, a farmer classmate recently Ordained, acted as Chaplain at the ceremony.

Father Brcphv left t'he Terrace at the end of 1937.

He ntered the Engin ering Division of the Public Works Deportment as a Cadet, and studied Engineering os a part-time student.

During World War II Father Brophy was commission­ ed as 0 Radar Officer in the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (R.AE.M.E.) and appointed to 55 Anti-Aircraft Regiment Workshops.

After the war he completed his civil engineering degree at the University of Western Australia, graduating in ] 948.

He was then appointed as Assistant Engineer for Fre­ mantle Harbcur Works, and later far Albany Harbour Works.

He left Albany to join the Society of Jesus.

Father Brophy played A 1 Grade hockey for CB.C Old Boys.

He was president for three terms, and saw the club raised t::J A] ranking.

In February, 1950, Father Brophy entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Watsenia, Victoria.

After completing the noviceship and the course of Philos:::phy he taught at St. Louis Schecl, C1aremont, for two vears.

He then went to Canisius College, Pymble, N.5.W., for Theology.

In accordance with a Jesuit custom he was Ordained at the end of third-year Theology.

The prayers and the good wishes of all at CB.C go wi th Father Brophy in the great werk for souls.

The 1960 Inter-House Swimming Carnival was held at Crawley on the morning of February 23rd.

An earlier dote than usual was selected os we hod determined to make on all-aut effort to wrest Int r-Schoal swimming supremacy from CS.H.S. Highgate, which has dcminated carnivals in recent years.

Performances at the House carnival were most encouraging and particularly good times were recorded by A. P. Hinds who set three new records, J. Rowt­ cliffe and S. C1arke who established two new records each.

Another pleasing feature of the carnival was the larger number of boys taking port in the senior swimming events.

Queen's House wOn the Carnival from Campian and the victory was celebrated in appropriate fashion.

On Saturday, March 5th, th whole troining squod took port in on Invitation Carnival at Aquinas College, John Rogers captain­ ed CS.C, and honours for the day were evenly divided, particularly good performances being put up by Aquinas' Jones and CS.Cs. Hinds.

An enjoyable morning was hod by 011 and the competitive experienc was appreciated by both teams.

With six weeks training behind it, the team went to the Associated Catholic Colleges Carnival with high hopes.

There were many thrilling duels during the morning between the blue-gold and green cops, however the Highgate lads again demonstrated their over-all supremacy.

A large crowd of Terrace supporters lent colour to the carnival by their spirited vocal support and certainly Our swimmers gave of their very best.

C S.C congratulates Rev. Sr. Edmonds, and CS.H.S. on their fine performance and promises them on interesting and much closer contest in 1961.

The entry this year of our 1st XI and Under­ 14 side into regular competition with other Catholic Colleges in the metrop::>litan area gQve t our cricket season much greater inter­ est tnan it has had in the past few years. Un­ fortunately, owing to difficulty with grounds, ,he competition was not concluded; we were, however. quite pleased with our teams' per­ formances in the matches played.

Of the I st Xl's four matches, two resulted in victories, one was drawn and the other lost.

Though not strcng, the team, led by Brian Shields, entered an the games in the right spirit and had its enthusiasm rewarded by 0 fine performance against the Incogniti Club.

The victory gained on this occasion was the first a C.B.C. team has had against the Incog­ niti as well os the only one conceded by that club in the 1959-60 season.

Brian Shields proved on all occasions a capable captain.

Brion was both an opening bowler and an opening batsman.

His score of 54 made in 50 minutes against C.B.C., Lee­ derville, was a notably fine performance. With J im Farrell, the vice-captain. he represented the T rroce in the annual match, Incogniti Club v Combined Schools.

Jim Farrell, a hard-hitting batsman, topped the list of batting averages with on aggregate of 162 runs mode in four inninas and includina a score of 68 against C.B.H.S.: Highgate.

Wicket-keeper Chris Lalor did sterling work behind the stumps, being responsible for seven dismissals; he also batted creditably to SCOre in all 56 runs.

Roly Bott showed much promise as on open­ ing batsman. His best scores were 50 against C.B.C., Fremantle, and 21 against the Incog­ t1lti.

Fielding laurels went, undoubtedly, to Leon Ousci who also promises to develop into a fine batsman.

FIRST VXIII Our First XVIII again enjoyed 0 pleasing measure of success, losing only two of the 15 matches played.

The premiership in the As oClated CatholJc Colleges' Competition came our way for the second time, though by only o narrow margin of points. uite a few matches were closely contested and, on 0 few occasions, only 0 spirited lost quarter enabled us to gain the day. That our team did hove the potential to ploy really well was clearly evident in the matches against St. Louis, Wes­ ley and Aquinas. On the lost-men ianed occa­ sion much excellent football was seen and, for the first time in many years, we em rged victors.

Much credit must be given to Captain, J im Farrell, and to Vice-Captain, Brian Shields, both of whom by their spirited efforts set a fine example for the rest of the team. J im was most deservedly adjudged the Fairest and Best player for 1960.

THE TEAM Jim Farrell: J im's displays in the ruck were truly aut5tanding.

His splendid performance in the match against Aqulnas provided a fitting climax to 0 great season.

Brian Shields: Brian, 0 solidly built ruckman, was one of OLlr mast reliable players.

He combined well with the rovers and defended strongly when resting in 0 back-packet.

Peter Dudley: Perhaps the best full-back the College has hod in many years; sure judgment and ability to kick well with both feet were Peter's strong points.

Kevin Horgan: Ke in settled down at centre half-forward, where his fine high-marking and long, accurate kicking mad him a mast valuable player.

Louise Borserini: A most reliable defender whose clearing runs from th back-pocket in­ variably carried a/I before them.

John Edgar: It took John some time to re­ gain his form of the previous season, but when he did we hod 0 speedy and tireless winger.

Charles Musarra: Despite his lock of size, Charlie, on elusiv rover, was always fearless and usually managed to be In the thick of the p/ay.

John Rogers: When on form John, with his sound judgment, sure pair of hands and strong, bustling tactics, was almost unbeatable.

His performance in the match against Wesley is o memorable one.

Alex Mirmikidis: Alex used his speed and strength to give much useful service on 0 half­ back flank.

Brian Farrell: Brian spent most of the season on 0 half-forward flank, though his best games were probably those in which he relieved on the half-back line.

Roland Bott: Roly showed great ability at centre where his often spectacular marking, elusive moving and accurate kicking frequently

enabled him to dominate that position.

He gave 0 great display in the Aquinas match.

Christ lalor: Besides being 0 shrewd and clever mover, Chris exploited his skill in the use of handball to the full.

Given on oppor­ tunIty in front of goals, he rarely faded to take advantage of it. leon Dusei: Leon's sure judgment mode him o very reliable half-back. At times he brought off some thrilling finger-tip marks.

Can Coroneos: A fast, nippy winger with an extremely accurate stab-kick.

Con also gave good service os 0 rover.

Felix Ragus: Felix did well both in the ruck and while resting in 0 forward pocket. We ex­ pect 0 great deal from Felix in future seasons.

John O'Neil: A solidly built ruckman, John was prominent in many games and scored a creditable tally of goals.

M:Jl( Hyde: oted for his fearl ss and speedy roving.

Despite 0 reputation for poor kicking, Max contributed four goals in the match against

AC John Anderton, Ray Harrold, Terry O'Con­ nor, Keith Robertson, Frank Johnston and Zoltnn Kovaes did well when called on and promise to be prominent members of next year's Firsts.

UNDER 16 FOOTBALL C .C in 1960 again entered 0 team in the East Perth-West Perth District under 16 foot­ ball competition.

The team settled down to playing really good football, being eliminated only by West Perth, the eventual winners in the preliminary final.

The team was ably led by its captain, J. D. Burrell, who also won the Fairest and Best award, and its vice-captain, P. M. Valmadre.

Other players to show excellent form were Anthcny Baker, Peter George, Kerry Corrigan, Errol Sporer, John Green, Rodney Hill and Warren Janes.

Our best football was played in the middle of the season when 12 consecu­ tive wins were recorded, including victories over ach of the other three finalists. C.B.C would like to extend to the competition winners, West Perth, and to the other two finalists, Northern Suburbs and CB.C, Leederville, its hearty congratulations.

Prcbably the best feature of the Under 16 f;> tball at CB.C is the excellent competition afforded in 0 long series of solid, well organised games.

The skdl, teamwork and general in­ fluence on former Under 16 footballers has plaY2d no small port in the rise to prominence of CB.C's first eighteen in recent years. Much of the credit for this is due to the East Perth Football Club and its officials, particularly Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Pearton.

HOCI<EY Our thanks arc once again due to the W.AH.A for the many very pleasant Satur­ day mornings we experienced during the sea­ son. This year six teams were fielded in the Saturday Morning Competition and these, to­ qether with the Under Eiqhteen Divisions. brouaht the total number of hockey players at C.B.C. to just over 100. The high standard of organisation and keen competition mode these games extremely popular and needless to soy most enjoyable. Our thanks are also due to the Clubs who supplied the many patient umpires; without these willing helpers our competition would not hove been 0 suc­ cess.

With the improved drainage of Longley Pork, the quagmires and pools of previous seasons seem to be thing of the past.

"A" GRADE. Despite the call of thp Class-room and the eagerness of the Junior boys to excell in the forthcoming examinations, both "A" Grade teams were able to muster Cl quorum at the weekly practices.

Mr. E. Martin (Red and Black) aave invaluable assistance in the coach­ ing of ihese teams, for which we ore indebted.

The outstondinq plovers in this Grade were without doubt Tim Delaney (caotain of the Eastern Division) and Bernord Egerton-Green (captain of the Western Division). while Robert Rloffwitch, Colin Cook, Trevor Neil, and Paul Conti olsC) showed their worth on mony oc­ casions.

Peter Lee. Victor King and C1ive Millen were voted os the most improved players for the season.

"B" GRADE. Here the standard of ploy was of such 0 hiqh rating that it is somewhat of 0 problem to list the best players.

Certainly Pot Van Rooyen excelled himself in goals and appears to be our main hope for the 1961 State J un­ ior Team.

Paul Wells, Anthonv Holmes. Paul Fisher, Ivon Ilich, Pot McDonald and Ronald Goddard played consistently well throughout the season and the most improved players in this section were were Michael Gearqe, Terry Francais, C1em vVatts and Arthur Kalmund.

"c" GRADE. The "C" Grade team lost only one match prior to the semi-final.

This was a drawn match and on the play-off were were defeated 1-0. Arthur Wilson, as cootain, led his team to many hard-earned victories and justly merits the Fairest and Best award. Worthy of han­ curable mention are John Marqaria and David Edmiston. One of the prominent features of this Division was the large number of Grade Seven players which speaks highly far next year's hockey season; there were, in fact, some thlfty novices eager to show their loyalty to the Blue and Green.

JUNIOR UMPIRES. This year. too, saw a start being made to establish a "Junior Hockey Umpires' Badge."

Messrs Carter, Bedells and Bickford, of the W.AH.U.A, gave us three interesting lectures.

We wish to express Our appreciation and thanks to these me:l who gave so enthusiastic­ ally of their time.

In the examination which followed, Tim Delaney and Kevin Williams were the successful candidates from C.B.C. As there still remains the practical examin­ ation, it is to be hoped that tese two boys will be wearing their badges next season.

During the Australian Junior Hockey Chompionshio held in August of this year. Ivan II ich, Col in Cook, Des T rovers and Nei I Sound­ ers were hosts to four Tasmonians.

No doubt in the presence of such select company they enjoyed themselves.

It is reported that Colin entertained the captain of the Tasmanian side and has picked up some very useful points.

The Under 18 Division met wi th some very hard opposition, but os the season progressed One could not but be impressed with the grod· ual improvement in ploy and tactics. The team is to be complimented on its fine spirit and determination displaved on 011 occasions. Many thanks ore due to Brian Pillipson and Eric Alcock for the time and energv given to the coaching and training of these bays.

With so many young enthusiasts ready to be mode into good hockey players. the task of coaching is becoming increosinqlv difficult.

Surely there are more players of the calibre of Brion and Eric. perhaps retired from active participation in the game, who could spare a little of their time and talents in the training of these lads "What do you think:>" HOW

TENNIS During the year tennis coaching continued, os in previous years, under the directicn of Mr. Stan Edwards.

The classes which were held at Kitchener Pork en Tuesdays and Raberts:Jn Pork on Wednesdays were well attended.

However, it is 0 ccnslderable handicap to the tennis team to be forced to travel away for training and we ore looking forward to the time when we will hove more tennis courts of Cur own at the new site.

COLLEGE

Teams were entered os usual for the Slazenger and Herbert Edwards Cups In the latter we were defeated by AqUlnas and in the former by Perth Modern School.

ABMY CADET UNIT

The Anzac Day parade, attended by Cel Borrett, on Old Boy of the school, gained much praise from the presiding officers.

Col. Barrett voiced his appreciation to the cadets and commended them for 0 fine effort.

were looking forward to another year of cadet training.

Each Monday from 3.30 p.m. till 5 pm. the cadets were taught the rudiments of the army life, how to manage weapons and h~w to combine together into one disciplined bJdy This training was climaxed at the march out parade at which Col. Borrett again was our guest.

There were competitions against the air cadets and although our hopes were high the air cadets took the cups fa the best second year dri II squad and fastest weapons relay team.

Our first year drill squad wan their competition and so did not allow the air cadets complete victory.

The long waited for event, the annual camp, was 0 success in more ways than one.

The army was unable to supply on appreciable number of instuctors and this being the case the cadet under-officers and N.C.O's. were kept busy instructing the cadets themselves.

They performed their task well and deserve praise.

The mortar group trained by Sgt. D. Burns wan on inter-school competition against Aquinas and Hole; the Vickers machine gun crew although trained hard by Sgts. A. Hinds and T. Grocke, did not do so well.

They and Brothe, Drake worked hard to make the march out parade a success and such it was due to their untiring efforts.

Altogether the year was quite 0 successful one and it is hoped by all the cadets that the following year will be up to the some standard.

Even though the school is being changed the whole unit hopes that the traditions gained in the unit from the old school will be carried forth into the new school.

Highlights af the year were the Annual Camp at Pearce and a week-end camp at Point Peron. The former, which was held at the beginning of the May holidcys was particularly successful this year. The cadets were given a full programme of practice at the range and field-craft exercises and were als:> shown over the station and taken out to the range to see th AF.T.S. at Bembing and Gunnery practice. The week-end camp which was held towards the end of July was attended by about farty cadets. The sand hills and the beaches at Point Peran pr vided an ex­ cellent arena for field-craft exercises and two rubber dinghies made s:me other very inter­ esting work pessible too.

James M::Velgh proved to be the most suc­ cessful and versaLle player, handling both bot and ball wi;h great skill. With the bot he scored 0 brilliant 37 against both Leederville and Fremantle, while in those two matches he took 7 for 18 and 5 for 12 in the bowl ing line.

Brian Barber and Warren Jones also shored the bowling honours.

As reliable batsman during the season, Michael O'Cannar and Paul Fisher left little to be des;red. A fighting partnership between th se two in the final match against High­ gate carried t:'1e s::ore from 0 disastrous 3 for 2 to 0 more respectable 3 for 70.

In the field, Maleolm Dwyer proved invalu­ able, snapp:ng up numerous catches from im­ possible chances.

During the short season, the team improved considerably.

The fielding was ably led by R. Shields, who was most reliable, at times brilliant, keeping wickets· He was helped by 011, especially M. Knight and M. Petkovich.

The best batsmen were A. Wilsan, M. Elphick, R. Shields, C Lewis and G. Sergeant, with R. Finlayson and M. Riddler the most improved.

A. Wilscn and J. Fitzpatrick bowled well con­ sistently and were given good support by G. O'Connell.

UNDER 14 FOOTBALL CB.C struggled gamely through 0 rather rugged season but, despite some disheartening defeats early in the competition, never lost their fighting spirit and will to win. This de­ termination paid dividends, bringing victory in the lost five matches.

Best and fairest for the season went to vice­ captai:1 Edward Giglia, 0 fast-moving centre­ man, who turned in some wonderful games.

Capt. Gardon Kendall was 0 tower of strength in the ruck, with Brian Barber and Craig Alien ably supporting him. James McVeigh, Warren Janes and Maleolm Dwyer were clever and elusive rovers, untiring in their efforts to send the ball forward.

John Geargiades gave the team stability to the backline, seemingly at his best when under pressure.

If she could recall the past, would she not remember the days of bearded Brother O'Brien and Brother Nunon, of Pinda Boor and Willie Bryan, or Bishop Gibnev and Brother 0' Mull­ ane~ Would she think of Albany and Mt. Henry and Highgate Hill, or smile a little at old Brother O'Brien writing carefully in her Annuals: "May the Blessings of Abraham and Isaac and Jacab be upon thee and thy child­ ren and 011 who dwell within thy borders.

May the Blessings of the Giver of 011 good gifts abundantly recompense the colony that r ceived the poor wondering Brother and en­ abled him to aid in the erection of on insti­ tution in this once desolote land on Insti­ tution which yet may flourish as the Mother of many children and the nursing parent of learning and sanctity."

Bishop Gibney brought his first little bond of Brothers to the West in 1894 ond introduced them to the people of Perth as "The three wise men from the East." Cer­ tainly they were wise men os the scholastic records of the College show.

But much mOre were they religious men who brought w:th them 0 great tradition, men who knew th~t bricks and mortar do not alone make 0 Catholic College: that only the Spirit quickeneth, ono that Gcd giveth the increase.

Brother Nunan wrote in the College Annals that the examination results in 1906 were very s:Jtisfactory something of an under­

statement when the recr-rds reod "First ond fourth places in the Higher Public, First and Second in the Senior Public, ond First and Second in the Junior Public." The exomin­ otians were conducted by the University of Adelaide and the placings applied to candi­ dates from both States."

Brother Nunon was appointed to the Royal Ccmmission set up to establish the W.A. University and one of his Brothers Brother Fitzgerald already M.A. from Melbourne, was first science croduate and first President of the Guild of Undergraduates.

In those early yeors, four students were selected os RhodEs Scholars, Alex Juett, J hn Horon, J. J. Sovoge and A. P. Boor.

Gradually too, C.B.C. as we kn~w her took shape the West win9 was first, 1894, then the central section J 901. and finally the Chapel and East wing in 1912. Bishop Gib­ ney watched over her progress with a fath rly eye, encouraging and advisinq and giving with 0 generosity which was characteristic of him.

A

YOUNG MAN ACCORDING TO HIS WAYS . . .

Sorrowfully old C.B.C. would rememb r the war that came, a terrible war in which two hundred of her sons volunteered to defend their country in battlefields on the other side of the world. Sixty-five of them never returned, and Brother Nunan slowlv wrote their names into the Colleqe Annals. . He hod taught them all and watched them grow into young manhood Pinda Boer, Willie Brvan, Lyndsay Glowrey, Derwas Cumming and 011 the others. "This terrible war," he wrote "takes only the best."

A. P. Boor hod been his school captain twice, Captain of athletics. football and cricket, Dux of the School, Rhodes Scholar and killed with the Flying Corps in 1917.

Came the confident twenties and a new page was opened. The College hod always olayed 0 prominent port in c~mpet,tive sport but this was surely her g:Jlden era.

By 1937 the move to C1un.o Park, Cannington, was again praposed, but one day during a visit of the heads of the Order frcm Sydney, toll vigorous Brother Paul Keoney spoke excitedly about 0 place known as Mt. Henry.

Paul Keaney hod few rivals in the art of persuasion, but Mt. Henry spoke eloquently for itself.

It won everyone.

Mr. Kavagnagh, the Patriarch of West Aus­ tralian architects, produced a new plan and very soon the old College could just distinguish her counterpart rising above the South Perth peninsula. Aquinas College, the embodiment of twenty years of dreams and plans.

On the opening day all was rejoicing but not for old C.B.C. who realis~d perhaps for the first time, that the days of glory were perhaps passing her by.

When school re­ opened in 1938 she found herself stripped of half her scholars; the roof leaked, the paint was faded and blistering, the floors in disrepair a"d the long empty dormitories re-echoed strangely to the sounds passing along the Ter­ race. The great depression, 0 bad time for private schools, had indeed ended but other clouds were gathering and Once more hundreds of her old boys responded to their country's call. She would rem mber what hod happen­ ed the previous time; it seemed that the world she had known was passing on, leaving her gaunt and alone, the symbol of an age that wos no more.

LET NOT YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED . . .

As the years of the early forties passed too, it became increasingly obvious that the days when Christians' College had effortlessly held unchallenged pride of place in the Catholic education scheme were gone also.

Not only was Aquinas her rival, but ther were strong challenges from new quarters Highgate Hill, Leederville and the new SI. Louis. The school had never had much of a local popu­ lation, except for the old families in Adelaide Terrace but nOw even these were gone and the new schools were cutting off the suburbs one after another.

1942 was perhaps her lowest year but also the year in which she showed her true spirit, the year of her re­ juvenation.

The old place took breath and rallied, looked upon the tempest and was un­ afraid.

Up went the scaff Iding, the paint­ ers swarmed across her battle scarred features.

The old men of times gone by hod built solidly and well, basically she was as sound os a bell.

"This will again be a great school," said Brother Duffy; new floors went down and portitions went up in the old dorms., new win­ dow let in more light, new desks arrived with

a new generation of faces to fill them 1944 saw her first examination successes since th good old days and Brothers ond boys remem­ bered that 0 great school is what you make it.

An old friend Sir James Mitchell talked to her boys and distributed th:ir prizes and declared her "As great a College os he has ever been."

As if to mark the cnnivers:Jry of the first decade under the new regime, 0 C.B.C. first XVIII trovell d out to the great Aquinas and laid the mighty low.

The old place thought upon the days of old, and celebrated that vic­ tory for 0 week.

By 1955 the parents of seven hundred pupi Is from every corner of the com­ pass hod voted her the title of largest private school in the State, and could she hove done so. she must have smiled a little mischievously when one of her s:Jns of the new regi me be­ came Headmaster of Mt. Henry.

1958 seem­ ed to mark a new dawn with the first building activities sinc way back in '12 and C.B.C. watched with pride her new science block, rising in place of the old.

Here surely was the final cnswer to her critics, new buildings, new play­ ing fields in Victoria Park and talk of a new Preparatory . . . but olas­ "The best-laid schemes 0' mice and men Gang aft a-gley," as Robbie Burns said, and this time she could not escape. Twice she has defied destruction and risen again, as strongly as ever, but now it seems the time of inevitable reckoning has came.

Perhaps she has already felt the Iumblings of the bull-dozers that presage hE" doom, perhaps with her silver eye, placed so proudly above the Terrace long ago, she will gaze across towards the Ranges and se the new creation rise in steel and cream and blue the dawning of yet another lang, long day.

NEW MORN IN RUSSET MANTLE CLAD

Yes, If buildings could remember, old Christians' Call ge would have a proud story to unfold. Ten thousand boys has she watched ccme down the Terrace and turn ;n at her gate some running merrily, some 0 little diffident and some perhaps: "With shining morning face, creeping like a snail Unwillingly to school."

She has watched them come, and grow, and go, and now there must be an end.

Her Spirit will live on in her two daughters, it will not die.

She knows that some af the great traditions can be transferred, even the best of them, but she knows too that there are some which, by the very nature of things can never be taken away. They remained when so many things mode the journey to Mt. Henry, they are Inextricably interwoven with her memories, they will remain with her to the end: inevitably they will die with her. She has fought the good fight, finished her course, she has kept the Faith.

May the Good God hear aur pray­ ers far the success of the new venture, just as heard the prayer of that old Brother long ago when he asked with faith and confidence that his school become "The mother of manv child­ ren and the nursing parent of learni~g and sanctity'"

A Book, a Building and a Boy.

EDMUND IGNATIUS RICE, 1762 - 1844.

A man stood on 0 hillside, watching 0 crowd of tottered, unruly youths career off down to­ wards the nearby town. He stood alone, beside a large single-roomed building. Within it were only rough-hewn benches, a blackboard and o statue of the Blessed Virgin. The man was Edmund Rice; the time, March 1803; the place, Waterford, Ireland.

Edmund Rice hod spent that day endeavour­ ing to teach 200 illiterate urchins single­ handed.

Previously he hod been assisted by two helpers, paid well out of his own pocket, but now, defeated and discouraged, they hod given up the unequal struggle and abandoned him. Now, perhaps for the first time, he re­ alised the full weight of the burden which he had token upon himself, and this was the time for reckoning, the moment for 0 decision.

He mode the decision, os he always did, with wisdom and courage, not counting the cost.

He would be there again on the morrow, and the day after and every day, strong in faith, remembering I will go with thee, and be thy guide, In thy most need to go by thy side."

On another hillside, in another time and another land, stands 0 great monolithic bronze figure, 0 towering symbol of the spirit of Ed­ mund Rice, Founder of the Irish Christian Brothers.

The work of foremost Australian sculptor Tom Boss, it succeeds in being not merely 0 physical representation but 0 reflec­ tion of the personality of the great educator. It stands in the grounds of St. Patrick's College, Goulburn, New South Wales.

Apart from its daring proportions-it is over ten feet toll-the most striking feature of the sculpture is the tremendous strength and expressiveness of the face, the set of the head, the steadiness of the gaze.

The ex­ pression, while not one of force Or arrogance, is nevertheless of striking power and suggests his great Faith, his belief in the manly virtues

and his tremendous capacity for generating courage and loyalty in others. The right arm proudly holds aloft the symbols of Christian tducation, the Book of 011 knowledge, and the school of instruction. The vigour of the ges­ ture with its implication of resolute leadership is contrasted with the quiet trust of the child who grasps his cloak, Tom Boss, whose religious and secular pieces ore much in demand throughout Australia, is o fourth generation Australian, living and working in the quiet countryside near Minto, New South Wales.

He won Australia-wide acclaim when, in 1956, his enormous bronze figures "Man" and "The Trial of Socrates" were chosen for Melbourne University's new Great Hall. In 1957 he began doing work for Catholic churches after he hod become inter­ ested in the recommendations for liturgical art of Pope Pius XII. Soon afterwards, with his wife and family, he was received into the Church.

Probably the quality which most distinguishes Mr Boss' sculptures from the more conventional types of statuary is the stress placed upon com­ munication of ideas through the medium of art. T. S. Eliot, perhaps the greatest of the so-called "Modern" poets, once maintained in answer to a query about the "difficulty" of much of his verse that "these truths hove no literal prose equivalent, simply because it is of the essence of poetry to suggest much more than it con explicity state." A similar answer might be mode to those who demand photo­ graphic accuracy in sculpture, pointing and stained gloss. This is 0 subject upon which Mr. Boss has expressed himself strongly:­ "The first and most important objec­ tive is to capture the interest of the casual observer and one sure way to do this is to arouse curiosity To hold this interest we suggest meaning. . and once we hove managed to ~uggest meaning that the work contains on ideo, or moybe 0 subtle com­ plex of ideas, our man is beginning to be quite deeply involved.

He is curious, interested, and the scent of on ideo will soon stimulate the imagination. When the imagination is aroused the work of art really gets the chance to work On the mind of the person at the level that is proper to art.

It is here or perhaps o little beyond it that he becomes aware that he has 0 spiritual life os well os 0 rational existence.

Here art con communicate the ultimate realities to man."

Edmund Rice did not know 011 these things os he moved slowly up the hill on that March afternoon long ago.

All he knew was that here God was asking of him 0 great task which he would not refuse. Neither then nor in the years to come was he one who minded the wounds or counted the cost. And God from his heaven must hove blessed the toll, manly figure os it continued on its way: "Be of good heart, Son, . . . fear not."

Your love must be 0 genuine one, not maud­ lin, selfish, sentimental, or sensual. The child is to be loved for himself, for what he is­ a son of God and your son.

JUVENILE DELINQUENCY

God has given you your children to be your pride and joy now, later to be the comfort of your old age, and then finally to be your crown in eternity. To you He has given the care of immortal souls.

In your hands is the formotion of those souls whose love He seeks.

You must tell them about Him from their earl iest years: they must breathe on atmos­ phere that is filled with the presence of God. Thus by constantly walking in the light of His face in childhood, they will continue to do so throughout life.

As they advance in years, on intellectuol appreciation of the emotional climate of youth will be developed.

This then is your duty.

How wonderful te be entrusted by God with such a task' It cannot be handed over to others; if it is not done by the !:Jarent, it con not be done odequote­ Iy by anyone.

It is a responsibility that may be shored but it moy never be totally sur­ rendered.

And what is the s!:Jecial duty that the porents have towards their newly born child) Surely it is to provide everything that he needs to moke himself into the mon God has destined him to be. He needs food and clothing, shelter and protection, but we shall not here talk about those things since they are material and are relatively easy to supply.

But we shall speak of some things that tear at the very souls of the father and the mother.

They must give their child love. Now love is based on personal sacrifice.

If a man soys that he loves God and hates his neighbour, he is a Ta love one's neighbour in this sense lior. is by no means eosy.

We read almost daily in our papers of the problem of juvenile delinquency. Let us pause for a moment and consider what a "juvenile delinquent."

He is not normal. This arises from an attitude of mind which he has devel­ oped.

Experience seems to show that it is not wealth or its lack, or a good environment Or otherwise, that breeds delinquents; they are found at 011 social levels.

The fundamental cause is lack of parental affection.

Parents who pander to every whim and caprice of their child will reap a terrible harvest. The main­ tenance of order and discipline is not pleasant, but the child instinctively expects it from the adults around him. It is much easier to avoid unpleasantness and give in to the child, but this is also a simple dereliction of a plain duty.

Thus the will of a little child becomes the law of the household!

How can a small child know what is in his best interests) How can he be exoected to realise that the sacrifice of a small 'immediote gratification will be the price of future success?

Surely, the experi­ enced love of his parents should fold about him like 0 garment to guide his child's feet.

The high cost of living place great burdens on the shoulders of parents. Sometimes both fother and mother ore compelled by economic necessity to go out each day to work. This raises problems that on older and more leisure­ ly generation did not know. When mother has to begin 0 round of domestic duties after her return home from 0 day's work, she is in no fit condition to worry over-much about the character formation of her children. That re­ quires leisure and it is a very slow process. It might be asked whether the children have any real home life at all. It is in the "home life" that real formation of character takes place.

Whot, for example, is to be said of the situa­ tion, not uncommonly met, where the children hove to !:Jloy in the pork or on the street until "Mum comes home" Or perhaps we hove

another side of the picture.

In the wealthier home, the whirl of parental social engagements leaves the children in the hands of those people paid "to keep On eye on them". Out of such homes comes the delinquent.

Failure of the f(]ther and the mother to train their child in an atmosphere of love is, mast emphatically not made up by the frequent purchase of ex­ pensive gifts, by the furnishing of large amounts of spending money or by allowing them ony­ thing they want far the sake of peace Or a quiet life.

When a child, who has been brought up trom infoncy in such an envi ran­ ment, comes to the school he is expected to behave in 0 manner quite unlike the life he hos been leading.

Many of these children conform to school norms ond 0 sort of mentol compromise is reoched; one sort of conduct at school ond quite another in the domestic circle.

Sometimes complaints are made of the child's misconduct at home: the parents are amazed to hear that thei r son is a model of good behaviour at school.

On the other hand, 0 minority of children from the homes mentioned above just do not fit into the normal routine of their school.

All through their scholastic careers they are at war with authority, and by their social and and anti-social behaviour they develop guilt complexes in themselves and render unpleasant the relations between pupils

and teachers. These children ore the future delinquents. They are social misfits; lost, un­ certain souls who, by aggression against society, seek to escape from the psychological tensions under which they live. They are the loveless children of a few years before. Their twisted and stunted personalities are the price that has been paid for neglect of basic duties on the port of their parents.

Where God gives great responsibilities He gives equally great assistance.

The task He has assigned to parents is beyond mef'ely human powers, but He will help--and help will be forthcoming beyond all human counting if it is but asked for in fervent prayer. Every effort, however feeble and perhaps misdirected, to fulfil obligations He blesses a hundred-fold.

The parents stand in His place in the family.

They are co-creators with Him in the making of a man. Gad, to the children, is what the father and mother show Him to be; His power is measured by their agency.

He rewards true parents in time, by the atmosphere of love and holy peace even in the midst of trouble; in old age they will be blessed in the children; and in the life to come they will heor the joyous welcome of Him who said, "What you did to one of these little ones, you did to Me".

Here is a set of rules issued by the Police Department of Houston, Texas, U.S.A, for the guidance of parents who desire to bring up their children as potential delinquents.

So excellent is the summary of practical psychology in the training of children contained in it, that it is mast earnestly recommended to you for study and reflection.

(1) BEGIN with infancy to give the child everything he wants.

In this way he will grow up to believe the world owes him a living.

(2) WHEN he picks up up bad words, laugh at him. This will make him think he's cute.

It will also encourage him to pick up "cuter" phrases that will blow off the top of your head later.

(3) NEVER give him any spiritual training.

Wait until he is 21 and then let him "decide for himself" (4) AVOID the use of the word "wrong". It may develop 0 guilt complex. This will con­ dition him to believe later, when he is arrested far stealing a car, that society is against him and he is being persecuted.

(5) PICK up everything he leaves lying around-books, shoes. clothes. Do everything for him so that he will be exoerienced in throwing all responsibility on othe;s.

(6) LET him read any printed matter he can get his hands on.

Be careful that the silverware and drinking glasses are sterilised, but let his mind feast on garbage.

(7) QUARREL frequently in the presence of your children.

In this way they will not be too shocked when the home is broken up later.

(S) GIVE a child all the spending money he wants.

Never let him earn his own.

Why should he have things as tough as you had them?

(9) SATISFY his every craving for food, drink and comfort.

See that every sensual desire is gratified. Denial may lead to harm­ ful frustration.

(10) TAKE his part against neighbours, teachers, policemen. They are all prejudiced against your child.

(11) WHEN he gets into real trouble apolo­ gise for yourself by saying: "I never could do anything with him."

SPORT

A word to our New Australian parents. Your sons are now in Our schools in great numbers and for the most port they are a credit to you.

Many of you older people have hod to sacrifice your traditional ways of living-ways deeply engraven on your hearts.

You are asked to learn our ways which may appear strange and perhaps stupid to you. However, they are our ways and they have mode us the people we are: os fellow Australians we ask you to make them yours also.

Sometimes to people born in other countries sports may seem a waste cf time; but it is one of the agents in the de­ velopment of character, and it tends to implant good social habits in addition to its physical benefits. See that your lad has no obstacle placed in his way when he is required to take part in school games.

If you tell him to come to "assist" you on sports afternoon, he is up­ set because he feels different from his class­ mates. and yet he must obey his parents. You are making it hard for him to become fully assimiliated into our Australian way of life.

TELEVISION A recent writer has said, humorously oerhops but still with 0 measure of truth, that the T V set showns who is master in the home. The child's day has only a certain number of hours in it; if the T. V. is to take one or two of those hours each day, clearly something else has to be given up. The question which parents and teachers must ask themselves is whether the gain from the telecast is greater than the loss of what­ ever else it set aside.

In practice, it seems that time is being token fram recreational exercise. Children hasten home after school to get study done so to be free to watch pro­ grammes in the early (:» evening.

Whether this is wise is 0 moot point. Certainly if a growing boy is deprived of regular vigorous exercise, his development is going to be re­ tarded. Then, too, the fact that he is indoors o lot more must be token into consideration.

These ore 011 practical problems (and there ore many more) which must be solved by each family in an individual way.

Emphatically, any solution that is adopted must come from the parents and not from the children.

When you instal 0 T.V. receiver in your home you hove admitted 0 potent;ally dan­ gerous influence into the family circle. Whot the growing child sees, exercises an immensely powerful and lasting influence on him.

Here ore some figures taken from 0 survey mode throughout this College 0 few weeks ago.

In one group of thirteen-year-olds, there were T.V. sets in 44 per cent. of the homes and the overage viewing time was 2-l- hours for each week night (Saturday and Sunday not included).

In another group of eleven-year­ old, T.V. sets were in 68 per cent. of the homes and the overage viewing time per week night was just under three hours.

Surely facts like these are worrying. Where is the child getting 2 to 3 hours extra each night:> Is it from his sleep, or meals, or study, or exercise?

In several cases the viewing time was FIVE hours.

If you allow the T.V. into your home, you hove 0 problem on your hands: you must care­ fully control its use Many fomll,es have put the set into the liVing room ThiS might seem to be the logical place.

But think for one moment.

It will now be necessary for 011 the family to be quiet during 0 session, and there­ fore the natural thing wi 11 be to watch. There may be some advantages about this, but it has killed the true family life. It makes for the isolation of the individual; there is little mix­ ing, each person lives in 0 little world of his own.

Some families, realising this, hove set up the receiver in a separate room where it can be used without interfering with the rest of the house.

Such a step makes some dis­ cipl ine in its use possible.

Again, parents should place an actual time limit On the dura­ tion of their children's viewings. Perhaps five hours per week on week-day evenings is a reasonable amount. However, no amount you do allow will quite satisfy. T.V. is like a drug, the mare you have, the mOre you will want.

HOMEWORK The subject of T.V. leads us on to homework.

It is 0 nuisance to the teacher, who must dis­ organise his periods the following day to COr­ rect it; it is a nuisance to the parents who may not be fresh on the subject; and it is 0 nUisance to the boy who must settle down for study when the rest of the faimly con relax.

Why it is set:> The actual benefit from the amount of work done is hardly worth worrying about In the primary grades. The main pur­ pose In setting it is character formation. To do his homework properly, the lad must organise hiS time, and he must discipline himself to fulfil requirements.

The practical teacher knows the value of this training, and he is Willing to use time for correction that might be used more pleasantly at something else.

If the home co-operates with the school here, by the time the boy reaches the Senior School he will be able to apply himself in an ordered way to his. work.

He will have developed habits of lifelong value.

The duration of written homework in the Upper Primary Grades IS about half an hour each evening; in the First and Second Years, about five to seven hours per week; in Junior from seven to ten hours; and in leaving from ten to twelve Or fi fteen hours. These ti mes should not be ex­ ceeded.

Some boys day-dream. Often we hear par­ ents say that John "was up until eleven"l That may be so, but John certainly did not work all that time.

If he works at high pressure and with concentration for two hours he will be benefited by the study: but if he day-dreams his way through it, it may be posi­ tively harmful to him, even if he spends four hours at it. When he messes about sharpening pencds, cleaning his pen, looking for books, moklng Sure that the room is just right, and so on, ond so on, make no mistake about i t ­ he is wasting his time and is acquiring bad habits.

See that he works vigorausly.

Of course, radios, radiograms or T.V. sets are no aid to study. Thei r use while studying is the height of absurdity.

UNIFORM:

Boys may be enrolled at the College when they are ready to take their place in Fourth Grade, and thereafter for any grade up ta Leaving Certificate.

It is with regret that we are not able to take all those who ore seeking admis­ sion. Applicants will be entered on a waiting list and they will be notified when 0 vacancy occurs.

Regular attendance and punctuality are of the highest importance; and, in the case of ab­ sence, the teacher in charge of the class should be notified os soon as possible by 'phone or by letter.

The use of the full unibrm is compulsory for daily attendance in class and for all public functions in connection with the College. A high standard of neatness in dress is expected of every bay attending the College.

It is strongly recommended that each bJY procure a College blazer for sports wear.

There is a winter and a summer uniform. All clothing can be purchased at one of the official sup­ pliers.

Classes in 011 grades commence at 8.40 o.m. and terminate at 3.30 p.m.

During the day there ore two recesses; one of fifteen minutes at 10.45 o.m. and the other at 12.30 for three quarters of an hour.

Unless they hove a special permission, boys are not allowed outside the grounds at lunch hour.

The College Tuck Shop caters for 011 normal needs.

PROGRESS REPORTS: A report showing the marks gained in each of the subjects is posted to the parents at the end of each term.

At Christian Brothers' College a boy is ex­ pected to apply himself to study without undue pressure from teacher or parents.

It is an important part of a boy's training that os S00n os possible he should be brought to realise that his future is in his Own hands; the best opportunities may be wasted through lack of application and perseverance. The co-oper­ ation of the parents is cordially invited by the Headmaster.

Lack of interest in study notic­ ed in the home is best remedied by consult­ ation with the College. The Headmaster and the Staff set 0 high value on perso:1al r:ontacts with the parents. Such meetings very often help to explain peculiarities and difficulties in o pupil's character and mental history, and they tend to increase sympathy between teacher and pupil.

If an interivew is de ired with the Headmaster or one of the members of the Staff, an ap­ pointment should always be mode.

VISITS AND TELEPHONE: Parents are requested to refrain from making telephone calls Or visits to the College during school hours unless by appointment.

Boys ore not permitted to be called to the tele­ phone.

CULTURAL TRAINING: Botc, Speechcraft and Singing are taught.

Ballroom dancing lessons are available during the Winter Term.

Literary and Debating Societies function in the Senior Classes.

Every pupil in the College, except those who ore medically unfit, is expected to take his port in the sporting life of the School, and he must be prepared to do his duty to the full when given the honour of representation in any spJrting activity.

House competitions ore run to cater for those boys who are not selected to take part in inter-school competi­ tions.

In tennis 0 professional coach visits the School and gives lessons to those who wont them.

Correct attire for the sport being played is required.

For general ploy activities and for House P.T. the House T-shirt should be used. badges ore procurable at the College.

ARMED SERVICES: Every bJy in the Secondary port of the College who is old enough and in Junior or ab::lVe is required, unless medically or other­ wise unfit, to join the College Units.

Parades for both Corps ore held on one afternoon each week.

TERMS: The School year is divided into three terms of practically equal length. The terms usually commence on the Tuesday nearest the follow­ ing dates: February 9th, May 25th, September 7th. There is 0 vocation of two weeks between the first and second, and between the second and third terms.

The Christmas vocation is of about eight weeks duration.

SCHOOL BOOKS: All class texts and stationery should be ob­ tained from the College Book Room. This is under the supervision of Messrs. Pellegrini & Co. who will see that the books supplied are the correct ones and that they will be there when they Qre wonted.

Father, who was a member of the L.C. Class in 1943, has been latterly stationed in Queensland.

One of the very early students of the Col­ ledge, farmer Health and Justice Minister, Emir Nulsen, now Labour M.L.A. for Eyre, has decided not to stand for re-election in 1962 because of his age. Mr. Nulsen has been a member of Parliament since J 932, a truly out­ standing record.

Dux of Matriculation Class in 1930 and Stroke of a winning "Head of the River" crew, now Air-Commodore R. H. Brown, D.S.O., has been named the new Director-General of Operational Requirements at the Air Depart­ ment, Canberro.

After gaining his Honours degree in Science last year Denis Matthews was awarded a bursary to enable him to further his studies overseas.

He is nOw engaged in a post­ graduate course in the United States.

Every success, Denis, John Goodman in the State Athletic Champ­ ionships this year, gave an outstonding per-

forma nee when he won State titles in the 100 Yards, 220 Yards and 440 Yards Sprints, as well as in the 220 Yards and 440 Yards Hurdles.

Previously no individual athlete had ever captured more than three titles in one year Another winner of a State Championship was Morty Crowe wh aannexed the Hammer Throw title.

Marty has been a consistently good performer in this event for a number of years.

W.A's. Athletic Team in Ithe Australian Championships contained two ex-students of C.B.C.· John Goodman, of course, and Terry Bourke who competed in the 440 Yards Sprint.

Terry shows notable talent as a sorinter but finds difficulty, owing to long working hours, in fitting in time for training.

With athletics in mind, we can't fail to mention John Angus who is carrying out effi­ ciently the many duties of secretary to the YC.W Club.

A fter a series of successful seasons playing for Geelong in the V.F.L. competition, John O'Connell seems back in W.A. to stay and we shall be eagerly awaiting his re-appearance in the colours of his former club, Claremont.

He will probably not be the only ex-Ter­ rocian with the "Tigers" as John Osborn seemslikely to hold his place in that side.

In his first season of League football, John did well to merit selection as full-back, He seems to have had a busy time' Other Old Bays prominent in football circles include: Brian Groy, captain, and Graham Bruce, veteran members of the Swan Districts team, Reg Cribb, Dave Heath, Kevin Carmody and Terry Leen, who 011 play with the "Demons."

Terracians hove also been prominent [in football at the University.

Peter Tannock, Keyin Edwards and John French represented W.A. at the inter-Varsity Carnival in Hobart.

John McAlwey was selected for the team but unfortunately, couldn't make the trip.

Among his many and varied activities, of which study appears to be one, Peter Tannock even man­ aged to act os captain-coach of one of the Uni. Mets. teams.

Peter is also, by the way, 0 prominent member of the Newman Society.

Kersh, who is captain of the Old Boys' Hockey Club, has been 0 member since 1945, He represented the State in the Senior Team in 1953 and 1956 and is recognised os one of Australia's tactical authorities.

McGoyern.

Maurie is at the moment President of the Old Boys' Hockey Club and has filled this office for many years.

He was 0 member of the foundation group and has since represented the Club in both A 1 and A2 Grades. At present he is captain of the A2 team.

HOCI{EY joys the approval of the Brothers at the college, and Brother Kelly has given it great encourage­ ment by offering all facilities available at the new college when it opens next year We urge you to come and play a sport in which one can climb to international status in a club which plays a type of hockey which is the envy of all throughout Australia.

THE BULLY. The C.B.C. Hockey Club was inaugurated in 1941 by a group of Leaving Class students lead by Vaughan Henders:m and Bi II Con­ naughtan under the guidance of Brother Duffy.

Disbanded during the war, it became an Old Boys' Club in 1945 di rected substanti­ ally by the same personnel and has since be­ come a club with six teams apart from those in the school.

The Club has a unique record in Australia in that it has furnished four members of the Olympic team in Melbourne in 1956 and again in Rome in 1960. Mourie FoieI' was a mem­ ber in 1956.

Gordon and Eric Pearce and Kevin Carton have been members of both teams. This year Kevin Carton was selected vice-captain and our fourth representative was J ul ion Pearce, the youngest of the Pearce brothers. These players trained for ten month~ before the Rome Games. They have estab­ lished themselves as outstanding sportsmen and ambassadors far Australia, and the fine record of the team was in no small way due to them.

COMMON

INTEREST.

The problem for Old Boys' Associations is to have a common interest far men whose activit­ ies are naturally channelled away from the school by business, marriage, Church, and Club has supplied that interest and formed a other activities, and in our case the Hockey foundation on which to build Old Boys' activities. Another important function of this club has been to put the school name before the general public. This was on idea very strong in the mind of Br. Murphy, principal of the college in the immediate post war years, and we have more than succeeded in this direction with on outstanding record.

At the moment the Club needs young inter­ ested players. The only source of new players comes from past pupils of the college, so if the Old Boys' Hockey Club is to go forward it must have the support of the present pupils when they complete their intended studies. As well as the boys who complete their Leaving, the Club is most interested in those who leave in Junior and Sub-Junior years. The Club en-

Apart from regular Association fixtures, the Club entered into other activities involving playing the game of hockey.

The Annual C.B.C. Six-a-Side Carnival wos again conducted at Mosmon Park and thirty metropolitan teams competed.

This is a popular event which enables players to meet under different playing conditions than those that apply to the normal fixtures. The work of organising and con­ ducting the carnival was carried out by our own Club members with the assistance of the W.A. Hockey Umpires Association.

A week-end visit to Bunbury durin(1 July was thoroughly enjoyed bv 011 who participated.

Some hac key was played, as we had entered a team in the Sauth-West Hockey Carnival, bu t our efforts an the field were not crowned with success.

Nevertheless the visit was voted os most enjoyable socially.

Altogether there were five social functions organised for Club members and those attend­ inq founr extremely pleasant outings. Three "Sun-down" parties were held during the year at private residences, and the annual Cabaret night, held at Cygnet Hall, was once again an outstanding social success. We wound up the season with a social and dance in the private ballroam at His Majesty's Hotel. We were very pleased to have among our guests Rev. Brother Kelly and Rev. Brother Drake from the College.

During the evening Brather Kelly presented the trophies to the winners.

For 1960 the office-bearers were: President, David Haigh; Secretary, Barry Draffin; Treas­ urer, Italo Paganin.

The work of the Society was somewhat limited in scope, but during the year efforts were mode to raise funds for its various needs.

A sweep was held On the Melbourne Cup and at the end of the Second Term there was 0 short concert.

A magazine collection was organized for the purpose of distributing them at visits to Sunset. These latter are the mast important part of the work of 0 junior branch of the Society.

A squad of volunteers also helped at the Castledare Field Day by taking charge of one of the stolls. The group this year seem to hove shown themselves particularly proficient in the art of salesmanship, for their "takings" exceeded all previous records.

Mr. Robert (Bob) Joyce, one of the State's best oarsmen early this century, died recently after 0 short illness, He was aged 78.

Mr. Joyce stroked Aquinas (then Christian Brothers' College) to it5 first Head-of-the-River success in 1899.

He was 0 member of the State eight-oar crews in 1903, 1904, 1905 and 1906, and was associated with the late Mr. George Rogers in several victories in State champion­ ship pairs.

The late Mr. Joyce played football for West Perth before the W.A. league was formed, ond was also 0 keen cricketer.
