judge according to results frequently without knowing how those results arc arrived at. This magazine goes­ forth to announce the results of the College year, and to attempt to reveal by word and picture the process of training by which these results helVe been achieved. This process is accomplished in the many and varied activities which make College life, from the silent prayers in the Chapel and the more or less difficult studies in the classroom, to the organised games on the playing field, and the glad fun round about in generous ·companionship. If in the pages that follow we give an insight into this life, then the mission of this little book will be successful.

Parents will realise the forces which work to provide a complete education for their sons, and will appreciate the freshening Catholic environment in which their boys are passing the most impressionable period of their lives.

Old Boys will view again as they turn its pages the scenes of their happy days and treasured associations; they will be inspired anew to fulfil the promises of their generous youth, to effect the noble ideals of courage and truth they found so attractive then. Rightly has mueh space been allotted to matter dealing exclusively with ex-students, in whom we recognise the mak~rs of the glorious traditions which are our proud heritage to-day. We feel that the REVIEW by this means can have a wider appeal and link somewhat more effectively all students of our dear Alma Mater in a kind of family whose numerous members have been nourished on the same soul-strengthening food of Catholic instruction, culture and refinement.

Lastly, and especially, this REVIEW goes to our fellow-students who may read with interest and pleasure the year's story. Happy should they hi: to have helped forge a link so bright in the glowing chain of our College history! To them and to all our friends, particularly the Reverend Clergy, we are pleased to offer c.n.c. REVIEW and to e x t e : J d greetings for a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

I am pleased to present ro you the fortieth Annual Report.

There has been a considerable increase in the enrolment, but our numbers are nor what they should be. In the secondary classes they arc satisfactory, but the primary portion should be at least twice what it is at present. The idea tlut young boys of the second and third standards are not admitted to the College has been, for some time, and is apparently srill, prevalent. It is quit," wrong. Our experience is that boys who live the life of a Colleg~ from their early ycars prove the most exemplary secondary students; hence, 'we cater -especially for junior boys. It has frequently happened that boys from fourteen years of ag~ have enrolled with no knowledge of scienc~ or languages-an obviolls and serious handicap, as these subjects are compulsory for the professions, :tnd definitely essential for a College education.

The whole nature of the boy is the Schools' concern, and, of its parts, the most important is his moral character. The basis of morality and its training is religion. From the very inception of the Public Schools of England in the fourteenth century, there­ fore, rcligious training was the primary function of the school.

Jt has been so ever since. At C.B.C., besid~ the regular study of religion and the practice of piety, we have held a spiritual retreat of three days, :lI1d have re-introduced the College Conference of St. Vincent de Paul Society. Rev. Father Kelly, C.SS.R. conducted the retreat. His inspiring lectures moved the hearts of the lads and won their confidence. The evidence of their faith and piety was most edifying. At the concluding exercise-the General Communion in the College Chapel-day boys came from near and far, and the Mass sung by them was most impressive.

At this juncture I should like to offer the sincere good wishes of the Brothers to the four ~tudents who left recently to study for the priesthood, and to tho~e of our Old Boys who are con­ tinuing their studies in the various seminaries. To Rev. Father Regan we offer our felicitations on his Ordination last year.

Our scholastic successes last year are praiseworthy. In the examinations conducted among the Brothers' Colleges in W.A., fifteen boys passed the Sub-Junior, and thirty-one the Sub-Junior Entrance Class. In the former standard, C.B.C., Perth, secured first place in four subjects, and in the latter first places in English, Latin, French, arithmctic, algebra, physics, chemistry, drawing, as well as the first ten places for the aggregate. In the Public Examinations fourteen Junior Certificates were gained and eighteen students passed the Leaving Certificate, three of whom-D. ­ O'Driscoll, D. Fienberg, and J. Kargotich-won Hackett Bursaries.

Among our thrcc students who pased the Commonwealth Public Scrvice was E. McGillicuddy, who gained fitst place in the State.

Our boys performed creditably in all sections of the Public Schools' sporting activities. For the ninth consecutive year we won the Alcock Cup for football, also our second eighteen again emerged premiers. In swimming we won for the first time the Law Shield for Life-Saving. To Hale School we were runners-up in the Athletics. We congratulate Hale. At that meeting one of ours boys, Keith Bolleman, was Champion Boy. To Scotch College we offer congratulations on their splendid victory on the occasion of the annual boatrace. C.B.C. finished third. Our crew in the Seconds won comfortably.

The College Sports were a grand success. To the gentlemen who there officiated so efficiently, to those who so generously donated prizes, and to the ladies who worked so untiringly at the students' refreshment stall, I offer rhe sincere thanks of the College Sraff. Outstanding amongst our boys on that day were K. Bolleman, W. Kinane, and L. Hackett.

A prefect holds a responsible posItIon in a College. His example and attitude means so much for his fellow-students; he must know how to command and obey. Our prefects this year have been admirable. With]. Kenneally, College Captain, and K. Bolleman, Resident College Captain, were four other selected students-Ko Brown, V. Murnane, T. Ahern, and B. Finkelstein.

I congratulate the Dux of the College for 1934-13. finkel­ stein. He is an ideal College boy-cultured, studious, and a good sport.

Who has estimated how much a Public School relies upon its Old Boys? C.B.C. Old Boys' Association, I am pleased to state, is a very live body. I congratulate it upon the success of its functions during the year-the most outstanding of which was the Annual Communion. It was inspiring and did credit to the Old Boys and to their School, giving testimony, if testimony were needed, that the great m:ljority of our Old Boys are true to the ideals put before them during their College career.

To the Archbishops, the Most Rev. Dr. Clune, and the Most Rev. Dr. Prendiville, I am deeply grateful for the practical interest they are taking in the College.

I thank particularly the Administrator, Rev. Father Kelly, also the Cathedral clergy for their attention to the spiritual wants of the students. The Staff has loyally co-operat"d in the work of the College, and the Coaches in the various sports have worked enthusiastically.

It is pleasing to report that the health of the boarders conFour

tinues to be excellent. Apart fr0111 a few colds, there was nothing to worry about during the year-a fact due, I presume, to the unremitting attention of both the College Doctor (Dr. Donnelly) :md the M3.tron (Mrs. Lee). Other factors contributing arc the systematic physical training under a gymnastic expert (Mr. Wells), the regular organised matches in the House competitions, the facilities at the College for tennis, handball and field games, and the recreation provided by the Literary Society, the Dramatic Society, and the Swimming Club.

Quite recently, the sad news of the death of two well-known Christian Brothers was received-Rev. Brothers M. P. N unan-and L. A. Fitzgerald. Brother Nunan for many years successfully guided the destinies of this College, and to his dying day, took a deep personal interest in its welf:lre. He lived for his pupils; hence it is that he won his way into their hearts where his memory will ever abide. In Brother fitzgerald the Congregation has lost another great man who likewise gave ungrudgingly of his strength and his talent. Both were always models to their religious brethren.

I have also to record our sympathy to the relatives and friends of Mrs. Minahan, who was Matron at C.B.C. for many years, and who is remembered kindly by all Old Boys who were then boarding at the College. May they rest in peace.

Before concluding, I wish to pay a tribute to my predecessor, Rev. Bro. W. 1. Power, for the splendid work he did at this College. For a considerable portion of last year he was far from being well, but he bravely battled on to the end of the scholastic year, when his failing health necessitated a change. I am pleased to report that he is much improved, and, as he is free from the continuous strain attendant on life in a boarding school, I feci confident that the Albury climate will restore him to good health.

Finally, I wish to convey to all friends of the College the best wishes of the Brothers for the approaching holy season of Christmas.

THOSE WILD FLOWERS

was morning period; at the blackboard a mathematician in religious garb expiated on the mysteries of graphical x, whik the class tried to perform the impossible feat of assimilating a quarter of the facts with which their reverend preceptor bom­ barded them. It was a hopeless task, and my eyes sought that pitfall of students, the window.

Through the interlacing leafless branches of the plane trees and the red tiled gables opposite I caught a glimpse of the Darling Ranges in a purple haze. Gone were the maths class, windows and plane trees. I was back in the hills whence I had come that mornmg. Around me on the ridges were the stately gum trees. while down the slopes on either side of the gurgling creek were spread wild flowers and shrubs in bloom that for beauty and colour made the rainbow extraneous.

Indeed, having seen a valley in the hills in springtime, one ceases to heap ridicule on Pantheistic theories and reflects that even though Nature is not God, His likeness is very strongly implanted upon it.

There is, in the hills, a valley guarded on three sides by steep tree-crowned ridges. Down the bottom of the valley, flowing through pools, hurtling over rocks, and tinkling past pebbles, flows a creek whose banks are covered in ferns and pink everlast­ ings springing from a carpet of moss. The lower slopes of the valley's side arc covered in pink, white and golden Morrison flowers, which almost obscure the heaths and lilies of the valley peeping through. Farther up on onc side the hill is steep with frequent rocky outcrops. Here grows in its natural state the clematis, its long tendrils weaving shrubs, rocks and trees into one glorious entanglement, the whole being covered with the beautiful white star-shaped c1cmatis blooms piled above one another and hanging and clinging in all directions. Surely the milky-way would look like this if suddenly caught by daylight in the act of tumbling down a hill.

The valley is a congregating spot for orchids. All kinds are there-the much sought after spider orchid among the rocks, the donkey orchid by the pools, the purple and blue enam~l orchids and others on the slopes. There also is the Jeschenaultia, whose

blue massed 011 the slopes provides a background for such more ornate blooms as the white everlasting, pink may, and stately kangaroo paw.

Prom the sides of the valley I see across the gum trees and glittering river, the city and suburbs. Their red roofs show in contrast to the green trees, apparently so near them. In marked contrast to the scene about us are the four black chimneys at Rivervale, belching forth black smoke into the clouds bcilind Mt. Eliza. That is symbolical of the city. Just as the smoke mars the beauty of the white clouds, so civilisation applied with too heavy a brush has marred the city which was once like our valley. " Your answer to this question, Laurie "-thus am I awakened from my reverie. To what heights might we not aspire were we not brought so effectively to earth as the amwer to a prosaic sum en tails.

THE LITERARY SOCIETY

THE value of the Literary Group

ha~ been made evident in the broadening of the minds of its members, in their increase of confidence, power of expression, and ability to martial their thoughts courageously.

Our first meeting this year was held in the Senior Room at the College, on Sunday evening, early in March. The elections were the first business of the evening. Rev. Bro. Nelson accepted the Presidency, and R. KennealIy was elected Secretary. following this came our first syllabus item-impromptu speaking. New to most of us, and, therefore, somewhat trying, the speech of four minutes allotted to each will long be remembered. The average standard was quite good, and many and varied were the subjects discussed. Redmond Green and Ron KennealIy gained prizes for best speeches. The former delivered a most interesting talk on the " Rise of Aviation," whilst the latter, supported in good style, the perhaps embarrassing subject, "Should a Tram Conductor object to a College Youth submitting a Penny for his Fare." A consola­ tion prize was granted to F. Tully for the most suitable subject.

The following Sunday night heralded our first competItIve debate between Leaving I and Il, the discussion being" That Free Ingress to \VI.A. should be granted to Foreigners." Leaving T team, comprising R. Kenneally and C. Nulsen, supported the motion, which was denied by L. de Mamiel and K. Brown. The debating was of a particularly good standard, culminating in Leaving I convincing the adj udicator of the superior cogency of their arguments.

The adjudicating at the n~xt meeting was performed by five selected boys. The subject for discussion was on the highly con­ troversial question of Secession. The affirmative was again taken

by Leaving I, under the leadership of V. Noonan, and supported

by J. Haines and N. Jenkins, whilst Leaving If's banner was carried by J. Kenneally (Leader), W. Kinane, and L. Weston.

The verdict was awarded to LC:lVing I, by a comfortable margin.

A feature of the debate was the able speech of Leaving II's leader, J. Kenneally. The remainder of the term was rlevoted to impromptu speaking and set speeches.

Tell

The Society's work in the second term \Vas confined mainly to set spl~ches, interspersed frequently by futrther periods of impromptu speaking. The meetings were held on \Vlednesday afternoons, in the presence of both Leaving Classes, :l11d keen interest was displayed by the students. Many humorous subjects were included, but although the humour, attempted humour, and occasional loose statements were applauded, the boys showed no lack of appreciation of serious argument or oratorical achievement.

With the advent of the third term and the proximity of public examinations, Leaving Il boys were freed from prepared debating work. Consequently the Society's work was generally carried on by Leaving 1.

A meeting was held each afternoon at 2.30 p.m. in the Boys' Library Room. That the boys should experience lc:adership, only two speakers were nominated for each debate-one to each side.

As the speeches devolved only on Leaving I, each boy debated frequently, and considerable improvement followed. Subjects to the fore in public discussion to-day, such as, .< Should Women be Displaced by Men in Employment," "That War Memorials should never have been iluilt," "' Is Aviation Detrimental to Best In­ terests of IIumanity," "Should Competitive Rowing be abolished in Schools," "That School Days arc not the Happiest Days of One's Life," were treated. C. Nulsen and R. Donovan performed consistently wcll, as also L. Smith, ]. Haines, L. Flynn, and V. NC::Jlun. An enjoyable digression from the usual procedure was the Parliamentary debate in which the orators were open to (juestioning during the course of their speeches, and also to a refutation by Opposition Benches at the conclusion.

This year's programme is not yet completed. Jt is proposed to hold a Mock Trial and also a Mock Banquet. Great importance is attached to the latter event, which embraces the proposal of and response to toasts commonly oITered at banquets.

A premiership round of debates will be held to determine the winners of the Oratory Prizes. Leaving I competitors will contest the first round, whilst the second round will concern Leaving 11.

The winners from the two classes will then meet.

The debating season wiJI conclude with a banquet attended by all members of the Society. Speeches will be delivered by the star debaters and trophies will be presented. Fun and laughter will run rife at this novel gathering, which will constitute a fitting conclusion to a very enthusiastic and successful debating season.

The literary work of the Society was initiated during tbe second term. Compositions on such subjects as rowing, spring­ time, stra w deckers, and tbe College Bell were read. One section of tbis work came under tbe beading of " Verse and Worse," and althougb many efforts failed to be classified as " verse," yet many

of the poems were suprisingly good and will no doubt gain publica­ tion in the REV1EW. With the ad vent of the term the Society was soon busily engaged in the editing of the REVI];.W. Under the supervision of the Brother Editor, boys were commissioned to write articles dealing with the activities of the College. These having been reviewed and corrected, were laid aside and other articles proceeded with. The boys thus gained valuable experience and the satisfaction of achievement will be theirs if they find their work printed in their 1\lma Mater's REVIEW.

Among our A thletes are champions in Hackett, the brilliant runner; Hutchinson, Needham, the Junior Cham­ pion, Maclean, his runner-up, R. Gelle, and Smith.

OUR class has

nine representatives who have passed through the College from third class.

We have the students who gained the first ten places in the Christian Brothers' exams in W.A., taking the first places jn English, Algebra, Arith­ metic, Physics, Latin, Chemistry, French, and Drawing. At our head then was Elliott O'Dris­ coll, who gained first place jn W ,A. The leader­ ship is now closely contested between Ted Cocks, Ted Chrisp, Bernie Bellanger, and John Murphy.

Even as we do well jn studies, so we arc equally successful on the field of sport. We have members in the 1st and 2nd XVJII and in the 1st XI. Jack St. John, our 1st XVJJI repre­ sentative, was this year a splendid Under 16 athlete. A. Glasheen, P. Mulcahy, R. Naughton, and R. Hesford represented us in the 2nd XVIII, while Miller Buzzard, who is only thirteen, gained a place in the 1st Xl. Bob Naughton and Ted Chrisp played in the 2nd Xl.

THE ESSAY

first consideration of the essay falsely led mc to think that it w:ts :tn exceedingly simple mc:tns of writing. F:tncy comp:tring the essay to the poem! One simply w:ts :t few thoughts described in quite :t straightforward fashion, thc other a work of intric:tte word-choosing and c:trefully modulated sounds. I have sincc changed my opinion of the simplicity of the essay, and con­ sider it a most delightful form of re:tding.

Though T must :tdmit ther2 :tre m:tny beauties to be seen in the works of any poet, yet on :tny give more joy th:tn the essays of Lamb? There is something in his writing which appeals to our souls. For certainly it is the m:tn, l.amb, who is t:tlking to us, who tells us of his own personal feelings, :tnd we can agre2 with him, can feel with him, :tnd derive enjoyment from these feelings.

And Hazlitt, :tlthough tot:tlly different from L:tmb, with a desire to be by himself, and an extremely critical mind, yet his essays are delightful. His freshness of thought carries us over comparatively long essays without wearying us.

Goldsmith is different again. Picking some ludicrous f:tct In the customs of his country, he illuminates it in his own inimit­ :tble manner, and we see that it is foolish, but true. We cannot help but find amusement in the account of the English Law Courts, the laughable appearance of the famous Beau Tibbs.

It has been said that every gener:ttion lives by slaughtering the ideals of its parents. Considering some of the modern essays, we find this is true. Detective stori2s were held in abhorrence, but :tfter reading Mr. Chest2rton's defence of such literature, we feel justified in our choosing of such literature to read. Dixon Scott quite refutes that old saying:­ " Early to bed, early to nse, Makes a man healthv, we:llthy, :lIl(J wise."

And so e:tsily!

That is what I like :lbollt essays. They arc so natural, so intimate, so gentle. They speak quietly-no harangue, no p:tssion, no fire. They open up new fields of thought where one can wander

in contented reflection. If one refuses to make the wander, one loses the real pleasure of reading-to think again the beautiful thoughts of the great souls of the past and m:lke thcm part of ourselves to refi ne, ennoble, and uplift.

KOOKABURRA pROBABLY the first object which I C:ln rec:lll is :l portr:lit of a kookaburra, pipe in mouth and arm in sling, seated on a decrepit kerosene tin. Here firsL impressions were certainly lasting for th:lt aspect of a kookaburra has never been quite effaced from my mind. Indeed it was many years before I conquered a latent difficulty in mentally sep:lr:lting koobburras and kerosene tins.

Though familiar in some aspects at least with a kookaburra had achieved the advanced age of seven years before r actually saw one. My feelings experienced so bitter a disappointment that no other disillusion of childhood's fancies remains in my memory marc.

There is nothing 111 Australia so quaint and essentially A us­ trali:ln :lS a kookaburra. Add to it the tr:lppings enumerated above and what better national bird could be found. Let us push from his lofty pedestal the emu, and exalt to his position the kookaburra.

Odcs h:lvC been written to the raucous magpie, to the swallow, and to the dove, but why has the kookaburra been so cold-bloodedly refused admission to our poems. It is incumbent on someone to writc an "Ode to a kookaburra," or " Stanzas written in dejection near a laughing Jackass."

There is but one opll1ion on the question that were everyone to meditate half an hour daily on a kookaburra the world would be

:l much happier place.

FROM THE COLLEGE of all ages and in all countries have' used for theme POETS beautiful sunset. Artists, roo have attempted to record in j

the measure of a can vas their quite inadequate impression of that riot of colour.

Onc wonders whether in the tropics to the north, or the ice­ bound areas to the south, there could be sunsets as beautiful as those we see in Australia, and more particularly in the West during the summer and autumn months of the year. Does the hand of the Evening-sun dress the heavem in a mantle of multi-coloured hues more beaLltiful than those which colour our glorious skies? In the torrid :£Ones of rndia and Africa, at the close of the fierce and driving heat of the day, does it shed an aureole of tints one half so delicate?

As I stand on the College balcony and look across the Swan, now transformed by the glimmering, dancing sunbeams which break out on its waters as evening approaches, towards the crest of Mount Eliza, I see the broad and radiant sun, sinking behind the small bold shape of the \Var Memorial, and the great purple rampart of the crest of King's Park.

Gradually my eyes become accustomed to its long border of hazy blue skyline. Above it is a riot of colour, a sunset broken inro golden parts, scattered over an almost cloudless sky of pro­ found blue. Just onc solitary cumulus cloud, like a huge ball of wool, floats lazily along. Its edges arc a fluffy white, slightly more opaque than its centre. Yet, even as I watch it seems to change, the upper edges gradually become whiter, while the lower edges arc tinged with glorious darting shafts of pink and gold. I almost thank the screaming traffic which cause the dust to filter inro the skies, each particle reflecting a shooting sun ray, turning the western sky into a breast-plate of burnished copper.

The cloud has floated a little higher, its lower edges have discarded their hues of pink, and with every second have become a brighter gold. The horizon is dimmed by the blaze of colour, and heaven and earth arc in communion, at least that is the feeling I received, for a sunset inspires as few others of Nature's Phenomena can do.

On the left crest of the hill are four gaunt, thin trees, set against the gilded sky, they seem to stand out like black lace.

Sixteel!

The cloud appears to have lifted a little, then suddenly it touches the crest of the hill. Then from beneath it oozes a huge yellow yoke, it pauses for a moment and then gradually drops out of sight, leaving only a mantle of many coloured hues to trail its glory.

The departure of the radiant sun has robbed the sky of much of its brilliance, and I turn my attention to the beauty of the immediate surroundings. About the South Perth Peninsula the water is a burnished sheet of gold, the reflection of the after-glow on the wide, still river. Here the ferry is making its slow way across the Swan, while a smaller craft has left the jetties now almost hidden by the dark shapes of the palms and young gum trees.

The first star is faintly gleaming in the south-west, and when a myriad of lights suddenly shine on the dark outlines of the farther shore, a hand has merely moved a lever, but nevertheless the dancing lights seem part of the miracle of the sunset.

The glow has faded from the river and only the War Memorial in the glare of the search lights, stands out white and clear above the darkness of the mount, its beauty reflected in the quiet river, impressing an unforgetable message on one who had sought the beauty in the s~tting of God's glorious SUll, looking west from the College. ::.

AMONG THE JUNIORS among the Juniors is school at its best, L IFE and in its most interesting phase. Incidents crowd to fill the Juniors' school days. How fre­ quently has it been wished that a record of the sayings and doings of the youngsters at play and in the class-room should be kept? 1 remember with pleasing interest something of what oc­ curred during the past few months among the Juniors of C.B.C., and feeling that perhaps it might prove interesting rcading, I attempt to note it down.

Two of our smallest boys, Tom OUfridge', aged seven, and l~ddie Pow, aged six and a half years, ~eem to call forth a spirit of protection from every senior in the College. Eddie Pow, popularly known as ., Ginger," who has a parti­ cularly trusting nature when crossing streets, never goes through Perth without an escort of at least one College boy to warn him of an ap­ proaching car or a bulky pedestrian. Tom Out­ ridge, however, has a quieter and more careful nature than his friend, possibly because of his grea ter years.

The majority of the Juniors have some particular hobby to did not seem to be aware of the closely packed onlookers. On the occupy their time at home. The keeping of animals and birds as following day, " Ginger" arrived on a miniature bike, determined pets is one of the most popular. Strange pets kept by GWyl171e not to let his rival have all the limelight. And we have another and B,.;al1 Gibbons are a pair of rats, a moulltain devil, and a pair-not half so daring, but just as picturesqu~-" Jack and Jill Japanese turtle, a hundred and twenty-five years old.

A class-mate of this juvenile zoo­ keeper is Michael Byrne, who surprised junior unJer water competitors and judges in the event on swimming night, by coming to the surface some yards ahead of his mate, who had jmt been awarded Jirst place. Michael, however, lands on the surface much more quickly when practIsing horsemanship.

Jilll Brady should prove very valuable to the College as a mile runner in years to come. He's always on the move. For the last three years he has run well in the mile handicap. This year he finished a game second to Brian McCormack.

Another Junior who seems to be a future repre­ sentative of the College is Banie Coclu. If prac­ tice makes perfect, Bernie should soon be a cham­ pion jumper, for he seems never to tire of prac­ tising during lunch time.

Val Noscda's feet slipped whilst he was lean­ ing back on his chair in class. The result was a broken thumb. A similar result occurred when Riordan Connell fell off his horse during the term hOlidays. The Brother to whom he had related his prowess as an equestrian, was amused.

From a recent party Colin Pu/!,nf rerurn2d with a funny hat and a doll's bath, but Oll/cn Chaj)/uan, his com­ panion, only brought back a boil on the side of ]lis face. A/an Glas!xcl7, a fellow boarder, seems to be attempting to break the singing endurance records. "Glash" no longer has an audience, except when the ordeal is unavoidable, for his voice has more quantity than quality.

When, on Sports Day, onc of the Brothers suggested to Paul Wade that he was being a little extravagant, he replied that he reserved the buying of goods things for this-his one day of the year. His class-mate, Bill Gibsol7, was the Good Samaritan when the same Brother was in hospital. With his father and three friends -Syd. Richardsol1, Char/ie Smith, and a parcel-he visited the

hospital every second evening. He's big in every way, is Bill.

One swimming day A/l11/1 Rosenwax misjudged the alertness of the boy whom he was attempting to push into the Swan, with the result that he went in himself. Ten stone into three feet of water meant a week from school for" Rosie." While practising hurdling the same ten stone sat on a hurdle. That particular hurdle was never quite the same afterwards. Another minor accident occurred when little A/an DOli/ling slipped off a plank on which he was trying to imitate a circlls stunt. He went round with his head bandaged for some days afterwards. And there are so many more things I hoped to have remembered!

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CONFERENCE AT the College this yeat was re-established the Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Already the students are imbued with that spirit of charity which animates the Brothers of this vast Society. They cannot always directly take part in the activities ordinarily demanded of members, because of their youth and studies. Much good work, however, has been done by the Conference.

The inaugural meeting, which took place at the College on the evening of August 27th, was attended by Father O'Con­ nor, Spiritual Director of the Society in W.A., Mr. Edwards, its President, and about thirty Brothers of the Society from Perth and Fremantle.

The usual procedure of a Conference meeting was carried out, and Mr. Edwards then ex­ plained to us the manner in which the Society did its work.

In instituting the College Conference, the importan t aim was to secure members from the students when they have left school, for the Parish Confer- ~ ences. The Society was essen- ~ tially for young men. Father O'Connor concluded by a feeling appeal inspiring us to love this unselfish work of Christlike charity, to be faithful to the spirit of the Society, and to live a truly Catholic life. How proud we were Lo hear from him that he studied in the sallle room in which the Society had that evening started.

Nowadays our Conference meets weekly, usually on Thurs­ days. The full procedure laid down in "The Manual" is carried out. Our President says the opening prayers, and another student reads a page from a spiritual book. The business procedure is quite formal-reading of notes, reports, Communions recei ved, visits to messed Sacrament, and finally the Secret Collection, which has been generously and consistently supported.

We gather all the discarded clothing we can. A few of us have accompanied brothers from the Perth Conference visiting poor homes. It is intended that Illost of us should do this.

"Grocery Day" was or­ ganised, the students of the College made it a huge success, and a pile of good things were sent to the Clontarf Orphanage. \V'e intend to pay a visit to the Orphanage in the near future, and take with us cri c k e t material, as the boys there are particularly fond of this sport.

It is hoped that we will soon be free to visit the various hos­ pitals, and to spend an after noon with the youngsters at Ca~tledare Orphanage to provide for them things that give boys pleasure.

A DISTINGUISHED OLD BOY WELCOMED ERNJE Bromley, a member of the 18th Australian XI leam to tour England, attend­ ",d the College from 192 5 till 1928.

He is the fi rst West A us­ ·tralian to gain a place in the Australian Eleven. When quite young at the College, he ex­ pressed his determination to .climb the ladder of fame at cricket.

He has achieved his

..ambition.

Shortly after his thirteenth birthday he made College his­ tory by compiling J 46 in a ·Cup match versus Scotch Col­ lege. During his stay at CB.C he compiled in Cup matches il34 runs, at an average of 37.9.

On Tuesday, March 20, he paid a visit to the College, where he was introduced to the boys by the Principal. Tn re­ -spans< to Brorher Keniry's address, which dealt mainly with his imposing record on the cricket field, and the pride C.B.C felt in congratulating him on his selection in Austra­ lia', Eleven, Mr. Bromley warmly thanked the staff and the students for their enthusias­ "tic reception, assuring them tha t he would do his very best to uphold the traditions of his JI ·n Alma Mater."

He met many C.B.C boys in the East, and "Was always keenly interested in the affairs of his introduced personally to the members of the Cri cket .autographs for the boys, a photograph wa; t aken to Ol.Inique in the College annals.

ANNUAL RETREAT WORDSWOR TH, troubled by the worldly Spirit which characterised his age, exclaimed, "The world is too much with us." The sam~ accmalion might with all justice be levelleu against our own time. It is probably the realisation of this fact that causes the Brothen LO have a retreat each year for the stuuenl\ when for a brief period they pUl aside worldly interests and direct their thoughts lO spiritual affairs.

Even Jesus Christ deemed it important to withdraw Himself from the world for a period of '·efleclion. Before starting on his public life, He retired for forty days into the desert, where, free from distraction, He gave His thoughts to the mighty mission before Him. The duties of the retreat consisted of threr; lectures a day, one in the morning, onc at mid­ day, and the other at three o'clock in the after­ noon. After the fi nal sermon, benedic tion was held. Strict silence was one o£ the duties imposeJ upon the boys. Between lecturettes they were free to perform their own private devotions.

Father Hogan, a Redemptorist, was the instructor. His first lecture was very appro­ priate, being on the words: "We have given a year to the flesh, let us gi ve a day to the soul."

Presently the boys descended to the class rooms, where they were given spiritual readin~ books. From there the boys dispersed to the lawn, some to read the books, others to recite th" Rosary in the sun. Frequently, boys were seen to ascend to the Chapel, seeking help and con­ solation at the feet of the Saviour of the world.

During the second day, the powerful, ringing voice of Father lIogan delivered impressive and inspiring sermons on " Sin as the Greatest E viI in the World," and also on "Death." During the afternoon the junior members of the School had confessions.

The final day's routine was the same as the previous day's.

However, the spirit of the retreat had taken possession of the boys, for nearly everyone carried out in an earnest manner the

In the yard, where at times. upwards of 200 boys congregated, a striking silence reigned. At half past one a special lecture was delivered to the Seniors. That afternoon, after benediction, Father Hogan asked all the boys to attend Mass next morning.

Saturday morning arrived and Father Hogan was not dis­ appoinled, for boys from far and near came for Mass. It was a very edifying sight seeing about two hundred boys approaching the allar rails. However, the more inspiring sight was that of the infants of the College making their First Communion. They served as an example of the good work ever being carried on by

FIRST J10'.Y COMMUNION the Brothers. After a good and hearty rendering of "Faith of Our Fathers," Fathe~ Hogan gave the Papal Blessing, imparted at every retreal. Once more he exhorted the boys to live up to their new resolutions. The boys then quietly left the Chapel and. commenced once more what might be termed a "New Year."

THE FOOTBALL TOUR H AVING secured an extension of the lease of the Alcock cup for yet another year, the next most important event for the members of the First Eighteen was the football tour, embracing the Katanning, Broomehill, Gnowangerup, and Tambellup districts.

The revival of these tours was made possible by the kind permis~ion of our Principal, Rev. Brother Keniry.

The party, which comprised Rev. Bro. Kerwick, Mr. Gepp, our Coach, Doe. Horan, Old Boys' President, several junior Old Boy~, and the majority of the Members of the First Eighteen, left Perth on Friday, August 24th. On our arrival at Katanning that night wc were met by Rev. Father Reedy, Mr. O'Leary, and others.

After a good night's rest wc were particularly bright and alert on the following morning, and consequently the guide who .conducted us over an enjoyable tour of the extensive Katanning Flour Mills was subjected to ~l regular barrage of questions. In the afternoon, prompt at 1.30, wc met the Katanning Colt~.

A l' the outset the boys were all at sea, and as a result we were iosing at half time. After the long interval, however, playing typical C.B.C. football, the boys were able to withstand the spirited attacking of our gallant opponents, and emerged victors by 2 goals 3 behinds.

That evening the Katanning Football Association entertained us at an excellent dance in the Lyric Theatre.

On Sunday, after attending Mass, and completing a motor tour of Karanning, wc journeyed to Broomehill. Here, after a hard, rugged game in appalling football conditions, C.B.C. went under. Returning to Katanning wc were entertained that evening

ar a party given by the Katanning Younger Set. The same evening wc arranged a send-off to our popular coach, Mr. "Nugget" Gepp, who had suddenly been recalled to Perth. Prior to the departure of the train, "Nugget" was presented with a beautiful travelling rug as a practical demomtration of the tremendou> esteem with which he i~ held at C.B.C. To the full-throated rendering of " He's a Jolly Good Fellow," and deafening cheering, he left us.

Next morning, at nine o'clock, we were in the train again.

Arriving at Gnowangerup at about 1 p.m., wc were met by our prospective hosts.

That afternoon and the following morning the boys were treated to various forms of amusement, ~uch a~ golfing, riding, shoo~ing, motoring, and billiards.

On the following Tuesday af ternoon, in magnificent foot­ ball weather, Christians suffered their second defeat.

But the final scores were not the true reflex of the fortunes of the game, there not being much difference between the teams. \\'!onderf ul pla y of the dusky llayward brothers, and the novelty of a nati ve gallery were in­ teresting features of this memorable match. The final scores: Gnowangerup, 12.6; C.B.C., 6.2.

The dance given in our honour that night, at the Memorial Hall, was onc of the most enjoyable functions of the tour. After supper, our genial manager, Doe. Horan, ably ~upported by our captain, ]. Kenneally, thanked the Gnowangerup residents for their wonderful generosity and kindness. Next morning (Wednesday) it was with genuine regret that the boys left this friendly little TWC'lIt)'-thrC'e

town for Tambellup, a distance of 40 miles. Arriving there at noon, we were met by Mr. Coll ins, Vice-President of the Associa­ tion, and Mr. Glen Flowers, the Captain of the District. Having been entertained to dinner at the Tambellup Hotel, we engaged the local giants in a gruelling game of football. The toll of three strenuous games was noticcably apparent in the play of the visitors.

Thc final scores were, Tambcllup, 15.8; C.B.C., 9.8 Aftcr tca that night we were entertained at a dance in th~ Memorial Hall, until 10.30, whcn thc arrival of our train caused a regular stampede to the station, and of every person in the danc~ hall. Needless to mention, wc were given a rousing send-off.

The journey home was unevcntful-to somc it meant the time for a good old yarn-when verbally they would experience

again the most exciting momcnts of the tour; to others it was an opportunity to remove, partialiy at least, the effects of very many late nights. But to all, undeniably, it meant the untimely con­ clusion of a wonderful holiday amongst wonderful people.

was always a matter of wonderment to me I TStirling, or Surveyor-General Roe, should have

that Governor alienated from the reserve set apart for the grounds of Government House the block of land on which the Christian Brothers' College stands.

They had taken in such a sweep of land that I could not under­ stand why they had not taken th2 whole length of it away up to Victoria Avenue. But some months ago I unearthed the reason, I find that originally this property formed two blocks, and that Peter Broun (later Brown), our first Colonial Secretary, applied for them, in 1834. Presumably as the Chief Official next to the Governor, he decided he should also reside next to the Governor, ~nd he. had Roe cut off the blocks accordingly.

But whatever happened, Peter Brown got no nearer to them than applying for them. They were never transferred to him, and aga~n I am forced to ask myself why. The answer is only a guess on my part, and is based on the truth of the legend that Governor Stirling intended to make Victoria Square the centre of his new Capital City. If that had eventuated, then the Christian Brothers' College sit~ would have been close enough but just far enough away from the hub of the city, and that would have been ideal for the Colonial Secretary, who was No. 2 in the order of things.

However, be the reason what it may, Peter Brown did not get the blocks. The one nearest the Government Demesne went to Dr. J. B. Lyttleton, the one adjoining Victoria Avenue to Mr. A.

McBride Broun. As for the Colonial Secretary, he built himself a cottage as a private and official residence, where now flourishes Parmelia Service Station, over the way from the College.

The Christian Brothers' block passed through various hands to the Hammersley family, and it was, I have been told, that from here Mary Elvire Hammersley married John FOl'rest, explorer .11lt! statesman. Finally it was acquired by Bishop Gibney.

Mr. Alfred Bun only recently told me that Bishop Gibney had once offered to sell him this property for HOO. Mr. Burt did much of the Bishop's legal work, and this was in the nature of a gesture in recognition of his friendship and help, Mr. Burt did not want it himself, but he went at once to the Premier, John forrest, and told him of the chance that was offering. It made Mr. Burt laugh to recollect the W:lY he was received on th:lt occaSIOn. "Eight hundred pounds!" the future Lord· Forrest gasped. "Eight hundred pounds! Where on earth could Western Australi:l get £800 from?" And that ended it.

This must have been in the late 'Eighties, for in 1893 Bishop Gibney approved of the establishment there of Riyerview College, under the Headmastership of Dr. Murtagh. A school room was buil t parallel to Victoria Avenue, :IS near as I can place it, on the site of that hall in which the Communion Breakfasts of the Old

Boys are held each year. Here Dr. Murtagh, resplendant in a voluminous black gown lined with scarlet, and with mortar board to match, ruled supreme with the aid of various bottles of blue­ black, red, green, and purple inks, with which he wrote over our books in graceful handwriting that only an artist could copy. If he did many things well it must be conceded that he dressed and wrote better than anything else; while arrayed in frock coat and shining top har, he brought a distinction to the Cathedral itself on Sundays that set all Perth talking. Alas, for one rea~on and another, it was only for a short time. T say alas, and very feelingly, for our school hours were 10 to 12, and 2 to 4. Then the Christian Brothers came.

The vanguard was formed of Brother O'Brien and Brother Connolly. That was 1894. Brother O'Brien was benign of ap­ pearance-until he scowled. Then he put the fear of everything -especially of Brother O'Brien-into us. But we soon learned that his bark was always much worse than his bite. Brother Connolly was a different type. He was quiet and reserved, and te!ribly in earnest. He taught the seniors. Maybe it was that they were a milder lot than ~he juniors, or he was milder than Brother O'Brien, for there never seemed to be the commotion his end of the room that there was at our end.

When the Christian Brothers arrived to take over they found, standing about where the tower rises at pre5<:nt, a two-story villa; I think you would describe it as a pleasant building with a verandah to three sides of it, typically English of the period in which it was built. Even in England the type is fast disappearing. It

housed the Brothers very comfortably at first, but, as we grew, the accommodation in the schoolroom that I have already described became over-taxed, and the University Class was taken to the library in this house. There was just room for us to sit round the big table in this library, which was on the ground floor with long double window-doors opening on to a gravel walk and thence on to the green lawn which ran down the steep incline to the playing-fields-pbying-fields which in the days of Riverview Col­ lege, and the first days of the Christian Brothers, were as often as not the bed of the Swan River. Th~ school-room in the meantime had been added to by another long room being built athwart its southern cnd, and divided into two class rooms. There was a giant jarrah tree just south of this room again, standing on the edge of the steep incline to the river, while elsewhere on the slope between the high ground and the gym. were a number of fig trees. :;.

Twenty-seven years after the days of which I write, I was being shown round Artane School, in Dublin, when our guide suddenly turned on me. "Did I hear you say Australia?" I nodded. "Do you know Western Australia-Perth?" he demanded eagerly. Suddenly my eyes opened to their utmost limits. "Brother Connolly!" I gasped. "Your name?" he demanded almost besid~ himself. "Cyril Bryan," I told him. "And Willie?" He had seized my arm in his eagerness. My silence told him. "God rest him!" he said softly. "I have never forgotten him." Nor had Will ever forgotten Brother Connolly, who had started him off on that high road of duty that was to lead to a hero's grave on a Flanders' field.

THE BOY AND THE SCHOOL reading something from Charles Reade the other week, I andWASa paragraph set me thinking. I jotted it down because I thought it true. Here it is: "Though she knew she was spoilin,(? little Gerard, and Catherine was ruining him for life, she would not part with him, but kept him at home, and his abilities uncultivated.

And there was a shrewd boy of nine years, instead of learning to work and obey, playing about and learning selfishness from their infinite unselfishness and tyrannizing with a rod of iron over two women both of them sagacious and spirited, but reduced by their fondness for him to the exact level of idiots."

My mother used often say that unselfish parents frequently reared selfish children. Her mother had taught it to her and experience had not changed this opinion with either. Much the same thought seems to have been accepted by the great novelist.

For the right development of a youngster's character, contact with a group larger than the family is essential. The family does too much for the reasoning child. He is not sufficiently thrown on his own resources; he has no competition, no emulation. But at school his self-conceits are rudely shaken. lIe is treated as an ordinary boy, praised or blamed by his companions, perhaps with roughn~ss and inj ustice, egged into all kinds of competitions, made to realise the necessity of courage, self-reliance, respect for the other fellow, and the ability to take defeat or victory. His pals arc great teachers, perhaps because they don't know it. I have seen the fruit of their training again and again. The shy boy who must hasten to his mother in all his trouble.s Ins found it incumbent to find another way out of his difficulties. Sympathy he does not get nor coddling. He finds his own escapes. What a change comes soon! The manly nature is nourished, the beginnings of real character bud forth. He is preparing unconsciously to take his part in the whirl of competition in after life.

The school is a " little republic," and its members are always sitting in judgment on one another. They have their unwritten codes of conduct. The coward, the sneak, the deceiver are con­ demned; authority is respected in certain cases, outwitted in others.

The boy in a school must learn to respect the 0p111l0n of the crowd-there he learns that public opinion carries weight. For­ tunate the boy who is trained in a college where the social judgmenr arises from a correct course of conduct!

There are other forces to build his character. His affections, his devotedness, are exercised by the admirable force of comrade­ ship; his prowess, his ability to originate and carry through projects in pastimes and mi,;:hiefs are encouraged by the oppor­ tunities school provides for leadership. If he is not a hero, he has plenty of scope for hero-worship, which Dr. Johnson considered an excellent trait in a man's character. Happy the boy whose hero-worship extends to his masters whom he may regard as the embodiment of the ideals of his youthful enthusiasm!

But let me turn back to the extract 1 quoted above. "Learn­ ing to work and obey "-was to be the salvation of little Gerard.

Work is always effective in character-training, and peculiarly so in this-it inures the young mind to its necessity. His work is organised and effective; he is taught to attempt difficulties, to discover his capabilities, and can, if necessary, be compelled by an authority he must recognise.

Obedience becomes habitual.

Punctuality and order make a deep impression upon his behaviour.

But most important of all the function of a good school is to teach virtue. Everyone demands it in a complete education.

The only way to teach virtue is through religion. And in ;l college like ours the principle is that religious and moral training and instruction are inseparable. The boy is taught by example rather than by precept, by appreciation rather than by mere knowledge.

His teacher and friend is a Christian Brother, and he is led to appre­ ciate the sublime character of Christ. Religion provides him with a real hero, and this hero-worship strengthens his moral character, by training his instincts, giving him good habits, right feelings, clear and upright purposes, and sound judgment.

School is a natural stage in the making of character and the most important. Its responsibility is a great one, and in no school i~ this responsibility more appreciated than in C.B.C., Perth.

MEMORABILIA October, 19 H.-At the College Sports this year two new W. Kinane, by clearing 5ft. 8in., records were established. established new figures for the Open High Jump, the previous best being C. Nulsen's, 5ft. 6]in.

1933.-W. Kirwan, by clearing 4ft. IJin. in the Under 15 High Jump, beat Gerald Scott's record of 4ft. lOin., that had lasted si nce 192 7.

November 15, 1933.-Playing in his first Cup Match, Keith Brown opened the innings against G.G.S. and made top score of 66 of a total of 128. This is the highest score by a C.B.C. \joy in first Cup Match. In the second innings he top-scored again with 32. In this match Lang Hackett captured 4-3.

March 15, 1933.-In the Under 13 v. Scotch College our first wicket fell before a run had been made. I3rian Hackett and Millar Buzzard then became associa ted and added 141 for the second wicket, the former making 80 and the latter 78.

March 15, 1933.-The College XI, 8-188, defeated Old Boys, 98.

March 10, 1934.-For the first time in the history of the College we won" The Law Shield" for Life Saving. I lale School had held it for eleven years. Our team was P. Ryan, W. Muskett, F. Sou thee, W. Kinane.

March 31, 1934.-Dick Bryant (Captain), and Frank I3ryant played for W.A. XI v. Australian XI. Rod Ryan was 12th man.

Ernie Bromley played for the Australia XI and made top score.

Marc/) 22, 1933.-0ne of the best wins the College has had in cricket was recorded on this date. Set 177 by Guildford, the record was 5-53, but the remaining batsmen took the score to 187 -a great win.

In season 1933 -34, five centuries were made on the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1st class cricket by our Old Boys: Roy Lonergan (2) for South Australia, Ernie Bromley (1) v. South Australia, F. I3ryant (1) v. Victoria, R. Bryant (I) v. Victoria. This is claimed a world's record.

August 3, 1933.-Playing for the Hackett captured 9-6 in the 1st innings in the 2nd. He also made 30 runs-top in its only innings. College, 93; Hale, 28

THE years 1933 and 1934 were marked by the continued success of our football teams. As regards" The Alcock Cup," we have held it sinee 1925, making nine successive years of Premier­ ship. lL i~ a record on which the Coach, Mr. H. Gepp, is to be heartily congratulated. \Y!e arc hoping th:ll we may win next year, and by doing so complete a run of tell years, a feat that has been accomplished previously, 1907-1916, both years inclusive.

The Second XVJ1I also did splendidly, gaining the title of " Champions" in 1933, and "Premiers" in 1934.

Brother Kerwick gave mueh time and valuable coaching to this grade, and is warmly congratulated on the success of his efforts.

In 1933 the Second XVIII was led by M. Murnane, with D. O'Driscoll as Vice-Captain.

In 1934 the team wa~ led by Frank McAuliffe, with e. Chapplc­ as Vice-Captain.

In the match against Scotch College two records were estab­ jished--our scoring of 24.11 to nil, and the getting of twelve goals

by Peter McManus. This team was led by Charlie Chapple, aged fourteen years, the youngest e.B.e. boy to lead a 2nd XVIII. Later in the season he was promoted to 1st XVIII.

the" House" games every boy is given a chance. From these teams promotion is gained to under-age teams, and thence to the 3rds, 2f)ds, and Ists. This year four names were chosen for the" Houses": School (the Boarders), Bromley, Scott, and Pren­ dergast. A beautiful cup was kindly donated by Mr. Prendergast as a perpetual trophy for J nter-house competition.

Kevin Needham, of Prendergast House, captained the first winning team to hold the Prendergast Cup, after defeating School House by a very narrow margin in the football final.

School House has since then rc-asserted itself by defeating its old rival in the House Relay at the Annual Athletic meeting, and now possesses the coveted Prendergast Cup. The winning team was, B. McCormack, J. St. John, P. Fisher, N. McKnight, K. Slater.

The Needham Cup, presented by Mr. Needham, M.L.A., for the best and fairest player in the Inter-House football competition, was won most deservedly by his own son, Kevin.

UNDER FIFTEEN

The Juniors' proud record for 1934 is that no under age team

suffered cfrfeat. harIie Chapple captained a fine combination under 15, which included many coming champions, notably A. Anderson, J. Leeson, E. Prendiville, M. McDermott, R. McLean, and R. Connell.

The Under 14 team was entrusted to Miller Buzzard, and despised small victories. A tally of 484 jJoints in four matches to their opponents' aggregne of only 60 points, promises well for future football at C.B.C. Roy McLean was the most useful player in a well balanced side, which included also, B. Hackett, B. O'Sullivan, J. Lawton, J. Muleahy, J. franklin, T. Perrot, P. Fontaine, N. McKnight, H. Carr, K. McKnight, J. Nicholas, S. Quigley, M. Bridgwood, P. Smith, W. Ward, and C. Pollet.'

The Under 13 team owes m uch to the football of its Captain, Noel McKnight, and W. Ward, P. Fontaine, P. Wade, M. Bridg­ wood, G. Chamberlain, and K. Slater, whose names, let us hope, will long be familiar in the annals of C.B.C. football.

Our outstanding swimmer this year in the Inter-Schools was Pat McDonald, who was beaten for first place by a record-breaker in the 440 yards. W. Muskett gained third place in the 50 yards Back-stroke, and M. Southee fourth in the Breast-stroke. An excellent swim by N. Woolhouse won a close third in the Junior 220 yards, and our youngest representative, Neil Kennedy, finished fourth against opponents a year older than himself.

Our tcam finished third. Hale won with a splendid team, which would have taxed the strength of any school in Australia.

SUCCESSFUt SWIMMING CARNiVAL The humid weather of the days since returning to College this year was Nature's invitation to the lads at "Christians" to make a big thing out of their Swimming Carnival. And they did. Afternoons from school were spent in the water, keen appreciation of the Australian cooling summer sport was evidenced from the little tots to the seniors. To get the lads to the Baths was little trouble, nor was it hard to have their entry filed for the Carnival ev~nts. Thus, in the College, the first function of the school year was a live one-parents were enthusiastic, boys were keen. A sense of pride was felt by all. Their College-dear old CB.C-was to do something no other college in most of the States, including their own, had attempted; and that \Va~ to hold a swimming carnival at night. It was a splendid success.

On Wednesday, 21st February, at Crawlcy Baths, Perth, the anxious entrants for the J uvenilc Dive stood by the board ready to answer their names and do their be~t at two neat dives-a runner and a stander-and a ., fancy." The board on the west side of the pool was only four feet above the gently moving, somewhat mysterious water; the night was softly dark, and the bright reflec­ tions of the powerful lights overhead shimmered on the surface of the baths. Thirty yards to the left of the diving board was the spectators' stand, skirting the eastern edge of the enclosed pool.

For fifty yards it extended, and its seven tiers were occupied by an exceptionally large crowd. Nine lanes, formed by neat lines of red and white floaters, divided the swimming area.

It was half-past seven, and the first event was started; at half-past ten the 59th race had been swum. There was speed out of the water among the officials, as well as among the boys in it.

And all was orderly, splendid, worthy of CB.C Mr. Willcock, acting State Premier, was there, and with him were the Hon. Mr. Kenneally, M.L.A., and Mr. Nulsen, M.L.A. Rev. Dr. Goody was amongst the Old Boys, who included Dr. ]. Horan (President Old Boys' Union), Mr. L. McDowell, Mr. T. Lalor, Mr. H. Solomon, Mr. A. D. Scott, Mr. P. Collier, Mr. S. G. Si!verstone, acting as officials. The starter was Mr. H. Goudie.

Peter Kennedy won the Juvenile Dive. His younger brother was second. Later Peter won the Junior Dive, and second place in

the Open. Colin Pollet proved a little faster than Peter in the swims, but was not as versatile, and secured second place to him in the aggregate for the Under 14 Cup. The Junior Cup went to Pat Ryan, who represented the College in the A.P.S. com­ petitions in the 100 yards free style, the 220 yards under 16, and the open back-stroke. The open champion was Bill Muskett, a powerful swimmer, successful in the 440 yards, 220 yards, 100 yards, and Back-stroke. Pat McDonald, with little training, came sccond in the Senior Cup. He is a natural swimmer and cap~ble of doing very well next year. Ted Cocks was the best boy under 15, Peter Fontaine under 13, Nei! Kennedy under 12, Pat Prendi­ ville under 11, and Brian Gibbons under 10. Generally, individual brilliance was lacking, but the standard of swimming was uni­ formly good. CB.C boys are not poor swimmers. Almost 200 students entered events, and the finishes w~re close. The handicaps were a great success, particularly in the Class Relays. These were splendid races, and both were intensely interesting. Pat Ryan, Nod Hurchinson, Ted Cocks, Roy Kershaw, and George Stewart were the captains of their class teams. And what a diversion came when the" Champion of Tomorrow" sat in the water on their balloon floats! Alan Dowling's sea-snake tube was too punctured to be inflated.

Little Eddie Powe, just turned six, led the pool and splashed his way to second place. The third boy seemed anxious that his game, tiny comrade should beat him. Young Brian Robinson won this novel event.

THE

HEAD OF THE RIVER

"I lead of the River," a much coveted title, is the culmination of three months' hard work. It is the classic event of the year, which manifests its popularity by the presence of a great crowd on the terraced slopes of King's Park.

The coaches of the crews spare no effort in the interest of the College to achieve success in their respective races. Mr. A. D. Scott, who coached the "Firsts" this year, is an enthusiastic "Old Boy" and successful rower himself, who, prior to this year, coached the second four, winning five races out of a total of six.

Mr. Wroblewski, who was the College rowing coach for a great number of years, was chosen as coach to the State Eight. Mr. H. Kenneally and R. Hannah, who were successful joint coaches of the second crew, are also Old Boys.

We varied the routine work on the Swan by trallllllg through the Easter vacation above Canning Bridge. There we were like pioneers in a new country. Seventeen of us set out to make things orderly about the bungalow-a good day's work. Our genial coach managed the cooking, and we fared well. Hale School crews camped nearby and were good company.

The weather was fair, the water calm, the moon full, and consequently we engaged in some lengthy rows up to Castledare and Clontarf, or downstream tJ Applecross and Coma. At different times crews from Perth or the University rowed up, and, on one occasion, we entertained the State Eight to dinner.

On the Sunday we walked to South Perth, some four miles, before breakfast, to attend Mass.

Think not, however, that we merely rowed, for we had cricket, football, swimming, and music of a kind. Have you ever been in a camp with an old gramophone and four records and ohe of your mates keen on "tinned" music?

On the fifth evening we returned to Perth, sorry to leave that little bungalow on the ridge near the stream. It was so quiet, so beautiful, and the air so bracing.

Two weeks to go and the crews are chosen! Over the course day after day while the coach directs from a speed boat behind, and hours of hard work prepare us for the race. Our trial times are good. l\. trip to the hills on the eve of the "Head of the River" is a relief.

And now the race itself! Our" seconds" win comfortably, and the C.B.C. supporters leaning from the 5.5. Perth are beaming with delight. The Old Boys' crew is beaten by a narrow margin after a hard fight.

I will leave it to you to imagine our anxious feelings as we waited for the start of the big race. Then the gun, the smack of oars and the struggling for position. The start was an even one.

We soon were leading, with Scotch clinging close. At the quarter mile we were half a length in front. It was a gruelling challenge, but we managed to hold it till a little after the half mile. At this point a mighty effort from Scotch put that game crew in front.

The positions soon were Scotch, Hale, Christians, Guildford, and these were their respective places at the end of the mile. We congratulate Scotch; they rowed a magnificent race. We were disappointed, but not dejected, as we found consolation in the fact that we had been beaten by a great crew. " Wait until we get into that boat next year," I heard from a College youngster, as we placed the" M. P. Nunan" on the rack.

So the spirit to win goes on. That evening we attended as guests the Old Boys' Dinner. Another page of rowing history had been written.

To Mr. Scort, Mr. H. Kenneally, Mr. R. Hannah we offer our thanks. The race will live with us, and the hard, happy hours at the shed, on the water, at the camp, will bring pleasant memones. Victory is sweet, but its taste soon passes. Memories of the thr-ee-months' preparation will be more enduring. These to us are happy, and for them we are grateful to the gentlemen who sacrificed their time and instructed us with devoted care and kindness.

SPORTS MEETING The W.A.e.A. ground was a delightful picture in the glorious spri ng sunshine on the occasion of this year's sports-the 39th Annual Meeting. There was a big field of competitors and the usual programme of events, augmented a little by a Junior Hurdles Championship event, and u:lCler age championships for boys, eight, nine, and ten years of age, filled the time from 10 a.m. till after 5 in the afternoon.

Repacholi's brilliant effort in 1932, :lnd leads to interesting con­ jecture as to the interschool clash with the Hale School runner J:lcoby. McAuliffe, who was second in the open sprint, has sud­ denly come to the front after many ye:lrs at the College as a comparatively unknown runner. He will be a useful second string as Hackett, onc of the finest sprinters the College has ever seen, h:ls apparently turned his attention to the distance events.

Many distinguished visitors, including His Grace the Co­ Adjlltor Archbishop, Rev. Fathers Kelly, Adm., Winston, Crowley, Dean Brennan, Donagher, Philip, O.S.B., the Hon. J J Kenneally, Esq., M.L.A., Hon. B. e. O'Brien, Esq., E. NlIlsen, Esq., M.L.A., E. Needham, M.L.A., witnessed the sports.

A nugnificent leap with the bar at 5ft. Sin. gave Kinane victory in the opcn high jump at a record height which he did not :lttempt to impro\'c. Nulsen, in whose name the previous record stood at Ht. 6Jin., cleared 5ft. 7in. to gain second place. He would have jumped higher perhaps if he had not alternated his attempts with rolls and straight jumps. In the under 16 field, St. John took the qU:lrter mile and 100 yards sprint, and W. fisher won the high jump at Ht. unfinished. The only apparent weakness in the division appeared to be in thc half miles. \'if. Fisher and his twin brother, Peter, took all the sprint honours in the under 15 class. They are sons of Gordon Fisher, of Nonham, an old South Fremantle footballer, who played in Interstate matches in 1914 :1l1d was renowned for his speed.

SCHOOL SPORTS The predominating thought at the annual sports of the Christian Brothers' College, held yesterday at the W.A.e.A. ground, was that the defenders of the Interschool Shield will be exceedingly hard to beat on October 27. Every encouragement is given to promising Test hopefuls among the junior cricketers at C.B.C. With the memory of Bromley, Bryant, Lonergan, and others still fresh, we need not wonder at their interest in competiton games.

The stylist of the younger generation of batsmen is Max McDermott, whose beautiful shots all round the wicket have earned for him the coveted honour of a place in the 1st XI at the early age of thirteen. His 105 not out against Hale Under 14 was the best performance of the season.

Woodful and Ponsford have troubled many an English attack, but what were the feelings of the Guildford Under 14 captain when Millar Buzzard (102 not o lit ), and Brian Hackett (102 not out), took the C.B.C. score to 212 for no wicket before declaring the innings closed?

The Under 13 bowlers, too, make light of O'Reilly's figures: Noel McKnight (5 for 9), and Ken Kelsall (4 for 3) helping to dismiss Guildford for 15 runs in their first innings. In the return match with Hale School, Peter Fontaine came to the rescue of his side by dismissing the two tail-enders in the last over of the day.

McKnight's 50 not OLlt in this match was the best individual score of the season.

BOARDERS' DIVERSIONS

LTHOUGH life at a boarding college must be conformed to set rules, there arc many diversions for the students from the daily routine and regular work of the College. These, with us, take the form of picnics, pictures, card parties, community singing, and feasts.

Twice a year, in the months of March and November, the Brothers treat the boarders to an enjoyable picnic at Point Walter­ very much anticipated events. There the boys are free to explore the bush and caves, or to take a refreshing swim in the river.

Those who are anglers take with them their baits and tackle, and there, if they wish, they can fish quietly without being disturbed.

Others join in a game of cricket on the beach, or amuse themselves on the swings. When the Jay is over, the ferry steams back with its cargo of tired boys, who retire to bed as soon as they reach the CoIl., happy in the thoughts on the day's enjoyable events.

Each Saturday night pictures are held at the College, admission free. Here, the boys can enjoy the attractions of the ., old silents" till bed-time. The programme consists frc'luently of two pictures, and there is quite often a comedy to add to the general pleasure.

In the summer time the evenings begin to become oppressive, and no one feels inclined to over-exert himself. The boarders are then taken for a stroll along the river-side nearby. There they can enjoy the cool breezes and refreshing air for some time before eventually retiring to their studies.

There is never study on the night of any holiday, and Euchre Parties and general card parties are then held in the Library for the entertainment of the boarders. The boys gather there and pass a happy and interesting evening, each among his companions.

Then, at the close of the evening, the winners arc presented with prizes by the Brother.

The Boarders are often permitted by the Principal to attend any interesting and educational feature that might happen to be screened or played. The best of seats arc purchased where those who wish are permitted to enjoy the entertainmnt to the fullest extent.

Each time the College is victorious on any held of sport, a great feast is held at the College. After being treated with savouries, fruits, and other delicacies, the boys are then able to listen to entertaining speeches addressed to them by present boys and prominent Old Boys.

As each term draws to a close, a Brother practises the boys in singing, in preparation for the break-up concert. Then, when the exams are finished, the term is brought to a happy ending. A feast is prepared, followed by various musical and vocal items contributed by the boys and Brothers. The evening is then closed by a speech from the Principal, who bids farewell to the students who are to depart for home.

All these diversions from the daily routine of the College life make the Boarders' lot a happy one. Then, in after years, a student can look back with pleasure upon the happy years he spent at the" Old ColI." -E.O'D. and A.B. (Junior).

The expense you will readily perceive has been heavy. Part of the burden has been borne by the ad vertisers, whom we hope you will consider if possible. "REQUIESCANT IN PACE" MASTf.R PAT PllvlLLY is the saddest thing in the life of a school boy to have to part with a class mate. It was our experience in fifth class this year, to lose a grand pal in dear Pat Pimley. He died rather suddenly, and we felt very sympathetic towards his parents and his brother Frank. It was a heavy cross for them, because we can understand how dearly loved at home Pat must have been. He was a wonder­ fullv good boy, not brilliant, but painstaking, obliging alw<lYs, respectful to and loved by the Brothers, keen at all sports, par­ ticularly swimming and football, and enthused with splendid loyalty and deep child-like piety. Hardly a day went by that he did not pay at least four visits to the College Chapel-before school, at recess, at lunch, and after school. His life then was saint-like; his death must have been so. He has gone to heaven plucked from the garden of life in the freshness and glory of his bloom to 8dorn with his spotless soul the home of God. We attended the Requiem Mass in the Cathedral, and, at its conclusion, we formed a guard of honour through which the remains of dear Pat passed to their last earthly abode.

Don Lyons was a most popular pupil of the College, a good scholar, and a fine all-round athlete. He had just commenced his 'Varsity career, when he met with a fatal accident.

To his relatives we offer deepest sym­ pathy'in the loss of an exemplary son.

MR

PATRICK BERNARD DURACK, whose death occurred in June last year, was born at Cooper's Creek, in 1871. Mr Durack was the first white baby to be born in that wild country.

At an early age he was sent to the Christian Brothers' College, Brisbane. At this time his father trekeel overland with some cattle and settled in the Kimberleys. Patrick was left to board at Nudgee C.B.Coo In 1889 he went to the Kimberleys to join his father. Some years after, however, Mr. Durack came south to start merino breeding at Behn Ord, in the South-West. The C.B.C., Perth, was then in its infancy, and as it was at one of the Brothers' Colleges he had been educated, he naturally took an interest in the welfare of the new College, and did all he could to hel pit. He ga ve a medal yearly to the College since 1899, and in many other ways helped its progress.

On his return to Perth from a business trip East, Mr. Durack was very sick, and five or six weeks later, on the 30th June, he died.

His three sons, Eric, Cecil, and Jimmy, went to the College, and arc now prominent Old Boys, who are carrying on their father's good work, and are always interested in anything concern­ ing C.B.C.

• Four other old C.B.C. students have died quite recently, and it is our sad duty to record our sympathy to those dear ones who mourn their loss. In your kind thoughts for them, pray for the repose of their souls-Patrick Durack, William Hatchett, A. McLeod, and J. Quigley.

REV. BROTHER J. A. FITZGERALD, M.A., B.Sc. BROTHER FITZGERALD was here at the opening of the College in 1894, and again in 1911. He taught mathematics, sciences, and Greek. For fi ve years in suc­ cession his pupils won first place on the honour list for Greek in S.A. and W.A. I le was a major graduate of Melbourn~ University in Modern Languages and Classics, and one of the first to obtain the Science Degree in the Perth University, taking Zoology as major subject. Brother Fitzgerald was first pre­ sident of both the Guild of Undergraduates and the Biological Society in Perth.

He died at Goulburn, N.s.W., on April 3rd this year, at the age of 59 years, and was buried in the C.B.C. Cemetery, Goul­ burn.-R.I.P. :;.

AN APPRECfATlON THERE arc purple patches in the life of every school boy. I have two of very vivid hue. Brother Fitzgerald is the central figure in each. With him in the first is Matthew, a tall lad who was introduced to the University class one morning for the only reasons that he was six feet in height and several years older than any of us. Other than that he had little qualifications for that honour. His English was very Irish; his backwardness appalling; his dislike of study profound. He only held our respect by the battery of bowie knives he had in his belt and which met our envious gaze the moment he took his coat off. Brother Fitzgerald was very patient with Matthew, bur there came that hot after­ noon when he told him to do something again. "I will not!" said Matthew. "You will do it again," replied Brother Fitzgerald, quietly. "I will not!" retorted Matthew. Their eyes met. Neither Fif ty- four

flinched nor flickered. "Will you do what I tell you?" Brother Fitzgerald put to him again. ,. I will not!" Matthew doggedly made answer. But he did; whatever happened was over in a flash.

Ere we knew it, and ere he knew it, Matthew was doing his task again. Or rather he just made the start. Brother Fitzgerald was nothing if not human. He stopped it and took us all off to the gym.

The other purple patch, with Brother Fitzgerald again in the centre, was that afternoon that he carried his bat behind his shoul­ der and caught the ball bending. Away up in the air it went, over the two-storied villa that then housed the Brothers (standing about where the present tower is), and out on to St. George's Terrace!

There we found it. But not for weeks did the feat find its way int() the newspapers. Who knows, when Tradition begins to gather round the College, that that ball will have been sent over the present tower, and from the present pitch!

Twenty years makes a change in :IJ1Y man, but it made many in Brother Fitzgerald. So many in fact that [ wish I had only the memory of him that I carried from school-days. I am astounded to find that only ten years separated us in ages, so he must have been a bare 22 when I sat before him along with those others whose names elude me, or most of them. He was the personification of virility; a man's man; nay, even more th~n that, he was a boy's man. He was our idol, firm and forceful and straight and square, our friend as much in the school room as on the playing field. He would hate gush. I, too, would hate you to think I gush when I speak so of him. I can see him now at the wicket, his gown tucked about him, out of the way; I can see him swinging along and up those first ladders in the gym. with easy, graceful movements w? dared to equal but ill succeeded; I can see him standing en gard~ with Professor Seguy, his rapier play almost taking second place to his footwork. Of all the memories I carry of my school days, my association with" f'itz " stands out clearest and sweetest, and I grieve that ill-health added to overwork, physical and mental, dimmed, years before their time, the vigour that was such an. inspiration to us in those early days.

COLLEGE REVIEW would be complete without a section devoted to the activities and progress of C.B.C. Old Boys In all parts of Australia, and especially to the doings of the Old Boys' Association during the past twelve months. In general it may be said that the Association, under the able guidance of its President, Dr. Horan, and its energetic Secretary, Mr. P. Collier, Junior, has been most successful in all the year's undertakings. The great event from a spiritual point of view, the Annual General Com­ munion, was very well attended, and the Breakfast at the College which followed, was marked by some fine oratory addressed to large numbers of enthusiastic ex-students. A full report of the pro­ ceedings is printed elsewhere in the REVIEW. A most enjoyable Old Boys' Dinner marked the evening of the Head of the River contest, and the festivity of the occasion was heightened by the exce1l0nt sentiments of mutual esteem and friendship expressed by the representati ves of the other Public Schools who were present as guests. The Annual Ball was as happy and successful an event as ever-which is a considerable compliment, for the standard of enjoyment at such functions has for several years past been excep­ tionally high. During the year a series of sporting contests with the Old Boys of other Public Schools has resulted in a fair measure of success to those of C.B.C., and we congratulate Guildford College very heartily for having won the football premiership in these competitions. Boys' Cricket Match, as demonstrated by the large attendance at the matches and luncheon at the W.A.C.A. Grounds, on November 9th, and the witty and cordial nature of speeches delivered by past and present Captains, and many distinguished visitors at the luncheon, was a most suitable conclusion to a thoroughly success­ ful year. le only remains to be added that the Committee actually recorded onc hundred per cent. attendance at a recent meeting, the occasion being the taking of the Committee's photo, reproduced on another page. Readers of the REVIEW are invited to judge for themselves whether this is wholly a matter for congratulation!

To sum up, the REVIEW is delighted to record the doings both of indi vidual Old Boys and of the Association as a whole.

Such a record is an invaluable means of still further strengthening the ties of precious friendships made at school, and of welding the Old Boys even closer together as a band of loyal and devoted adherents to the cause of their old College. For this reason it is particularly desired thJ.t any past students of the College, especially the veterans of its earlier years, who may have tidings of former schoolmates will forward them to the Editor, with a view to their inclusion in the next REVIEW. THE Superior General of the Irish Christian Brothers, Rev. Bro. ]. P. Noonan, who is on a visit to the Roman I-louse of his Order, was received in private audicnce by the Holy Father during his stay in the Eternal City. After the private audience the Superior General had the honour of presenting to the Holy Father a large gathering of Prie~b, Ecclesiastical Studcnt~, and Rdigious from various Colleges and Communitie~ in Rome, who are ex-pupils of the Brothers' schools in nuny part~ of the world. These ex-pupiL numbered in all about one hundred and seventy, and represented the Brothers' schools in Ireland, England, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, India, South Africa, Canada, the United States, and Newfoundland. The Orders repre~cnted were: The Dominicans, Franciscans, Carmelites, Capuchins, Jesuits, Augu~tinians, Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, Vincentian

Throne, His Holiness, who was evidently greatly affeCled, ad­ dressed the ex-pupils on the benefits of Catholic education. " This group of beloved children gather~d around their com­ mon Father worthily represents the vast field of Llbour which the Christian Brothers are cultivating in so many parts of the world.

It repr~sents, too, in a very special manner, the rich harvest, the ripe fruit of an education truly perfect and profoundly Christian.

It cnabl~s us to judge of the good the Brothers are doing in all their Colleges. We know that the education imparted by the Chri~tian Brothers is not merely Christian, it is exquisitely Catholic in ev~ry aspect. Truly the Superior General could not have pre­ sented u~ with any more pleasing and consoling illustration of th2 work of his Order than this gathering of select vocations. You speak to us of the precious advantages of Catholic Education; you speak to us of Christian life, of heroic Christian life, like to that of the Saints, who, in this Holy Year, and especially towards its cJose, we have elevated to the honours of the Altar; like unto the life of Saint Cotlolengo and of Saint John 13osco.' , This heroic life is nothing more than Christian life lived in the full spirit of Christ, Who brought us life by Redemption, and

Who desires that we have it in abundance. So many vocatiom coming from the schools of the Christian Brothers is a manifest sign, a clear proof, that the hand of God is in their work; because a voc::ltion c::ln come only from God; and vocation is ::In election and each election is a predilection."

The Holy Father blessed all the young Levites and joined with them in thanking God for their vocation and in thanking those who had prepared them for this great treasure. He blessed their period of formation and thei!' future mission. He blessed every Brother of the Congregation a ncl all their schools in every land.

At the close of His address the Pope called the Superior General to his throne and gave him medals of St. John Bosco to be distributed to all present as a souvenior of the audience. In handing the medals the Holy father remarked that St. John Bosco was truly a great Christian Brother who sowed and reaped in the field of Christian Education an immense harvest of good.

The Superior General presented His Holiness with a beautifully bound album containing the photos of all the past pupils who ~re now in the Roman Ecclesiastical Colleges.

OLD BOYS' COMMUNION

THE Old Boys held their annual General Communion on Sunday,

September 2nd, at the Cathedral.

Inspiring lectures were given by Rev. Father Ke!ly, AdlTI., and Rev. Dr. McMahon, on Thursday and Friday evenings in the College Chapel. The Com­ munion Breakfast was held at the College.

Mr. I. G. Boylc proposed the toast of .. The Archbishops and Clergy.". .. Very properly," he ,aid, .. the toast was at the head of the list. He had in past years unique opportunities of seeing their beloved Archbishop Clun~ in action, so to speak, and a finer example of the Church militant did not exist. As Father Clune, Redemptorist missionary, he went from one end of the State to and other, and gained the respect and esteem of Catholic and non-Catholic alike. .. They were intensely proud of their Coadjutor Archbishop, Most Rev. Dr. Prendiville, who had, like His Grace Archbishop Clune, always taken a keen interest in their affairs.

Mr. Cyril Dudley: "r feel privileged to have this opportunity of adding my quota of praise as a tribute to the industry and perseverance of those learned men who have devoted their lives upon this earth to the service of God and the uplift of their fellow men. For great is their sacrifice in the performance of their work, and wonderful indeed arc the everlasting monuments which thev have erected as material evidence (if such is needed) of the efforts which they have put forward in fostering and cultivating the principles of which they arc living examples.

"In the city a magnificent Cathedral rears its stately spJres above the heads of the modern city buildings, issuing a graceful challenge to the works of commerce, as if to say: ' I will not b~ outdone,' and while the city hurries and scurries by day and slumbers at night, the Cathedral offers a sanctuary of peace and quietude to all who enter. And in the suburbs, standing out on th.~ hilltops may be se~n the suburban churches-gems of ecclesiastical architecture, built to the service of God-and in the country those same heave m of peace and tranquility offer refuge to their scattered

congregations. These glorious temples, and all that will com:~ after them, stand as living memorials to the patience, the tenacity, and the endurance of the Archbishops and Clergy. .. Priests, like all men, pass away, and as the gap appears in the rank, it is filled with a new priest. Young, fired with enthusiasm in his holy work, he takes up the threads where his predecessor left off. For though the history of the Church is buried in antiquity, its activities arc characterised in all ages by youth and vigour."

From Father Kelly's reply: "Our teaching Brothers and Sisters arc the backbone of our Catholic life. \Xfithout them, with­ out their zeal and assiduous care in the formation of youthful character all our efforts in the Vineyard of Christ would be vain.

I do not hesitate to say that thc most glorious chapter in the history of the Australian Church will be the chapter featuring the per­ sonalities and telling the life story of our Bwthers and Sisters­ the story of their erudite scholarships, their deep-scared culture, and their untiring zeal in the grand cause of Catholic education. . . . .. The truc greatness of a nation is the possession of scholar­ ship and culture. Within the walls of our Catholic schools a scholarship is attained second to none; a culture is imparted sl1fCrior to any culture, education divorced from religion can offer -superior because founded upon a supernatural foundation-deep, strong, practical Faith . . . . . " Let the past with its memories sleep. Look forward to the future. What a dismal future to look forward to. It is clouded with peril. The combat is raging between Truth and Error, be­ tween Faith and Agnosticism. The enemies of Christ are straining every nerve in order to enrol under their banner the democratic forces of the world.

Anti-Christian leaders strive to win the workers to their side. So far, in great measure, they have achieved success. I have nothing to say of Democracy as a political power.

It seems inevitable. But who ,Ire gOlllg to be the leaders of Democracy:- Thi, is the vital C]uestion. To date they are no

friends of Christ's, but avowed antagonists to the Catholic Church.

Is it going to be so in this fair land of yours? It depends on you.

A very important part in the coming fray must be played by the intelligent layman, who is religious, and the religious layman who is inteJligent. .

"My dear young men, I would have you remember always that most serious obligations devolve upon you as students of a Catholic college. You are the defenders of Christian Truth, and the proud custodians of Christian morality. By being men of Faith, and men of character, you will do much to stem the tide of infidelity and instability which threatens to undermine our civilisation.

Practise faithfully the precepts and uphold the teachings of your holy Faith. In doing so, you will do honour to your noble College, and lend a helping hand in raising up this grand country of yours to the level of greatness marked out for it in the designs of Divine Providence."

Dr. Horan, who remarked that he had had the privilege o{ proposing" Alma Mater" many years, said the pleasure of doing so but increased with the years. They were all naturally very proud of their College, because they owed to it that high measure of enlightenment, culture and sound principles of life which their teachers, the Christian Brothers, ever imparted.

Mr. T. IIartrcy heartily supported the toast, and confirmed the remarks of Dr. Horan. He wa~ proud of the College, and he knew that he spoke for all ex-pupils in saying it.

From Rev. Bro. Keniry's reply: "They had begun their ceiebra­ tiof1~ with a General Communion at the Cathedr:d. How impressive that sight was! How edifying to both priests and people! What a silent sermon they preached on the one thing that matters! and what consolation it brought to the Christian Brothers; how they thanked God that they, with His assistance, were instrumental in moulding the character of such a fine body of men. They, the Old Boys, had an Alma Mater whose name was written prominentlv in the story of W.A., and while they lived up to the ideals put before them, both in the school and their llomes, while they had great fidelity in their lives and their professions, the good record

of the College would even excel the history of its glorious past.

They had good scope in W.A. for their talent-it needed them all­ it required development. There were many factors in the develop­ ment of a country, but there was none greater than the character of its people. Educated gentlemen, such as they, should wield great influence on public thought, and what a host of such men they had. How few people realised, or how few stopped to think, of the n umber of doctors, lawyers, bankers, journalists, parlia­ mentarians, business people, Brothers and Priest~ that are proud to claim CB.C as their Alma Mater."

Dr. Cyril Bryan, in proposing "Absent Friends," recalled :lssociations with the first students of the College, and revived many happy memories. He felt that the traditions of a College counted for far more than was usually realised, and these traditions were strengthened by Associations such as they constituted that morning. horn Mr. ]. B. Baggaridge's speech: "I desire to take this op­ portunity of expressing my sincere thanks and deep appreciation to the committee for the honour that they have conferred upon me, in Inviting me to partake of this Communion Breakfast. As a ;lun-Catholic, and also on behalf of the other non-Catholics present, please, allow me to congratulate the committee on their broad­ mindednes5 and tolerance, and to say that a gesture such as this is certainly worthy of the highest commendation and praise. . .. Dr. Bryan spoke of an 'atmosphere' and a tLldition as bting essential before wc can appreciate th? true value of our Alma Mater. I contend that in this very room we have that atmosphere and innumerable reminden of that tradition that ha~ made our "Old Col" the premier school in the State. Draped along the walls we have the banners of victory-of victory gained on the field of spon. Dick is now doing final law; Bill is a chemist at Mullewa; Frank is in the United Service.

Bill and Frank Brupby arc now living at Cannington. After a long and successful career, Bill has retired, but Frank is still a don at the game with Subiaco Club.

The Brown brothers, Jack, Pat, and EI/Il/lclt, are still identified with Narrogin and district.

Frank Brennan is often heard over the air, as he is the" Uncle Peter" of 6PR. His marriage to Miss Connie Bennett took place during the year.

Tom Holmes is the Resident Commonwealth Architect of this State, while Brelldell CalJanagh is a partner in the firm of Cavanagh and Cavanagh, Architects, of the Terrace.

Th~ SlIIitb brothers, Lanrie and Jael?, are often seen in town from their cattle stations of the North. Lauric was married during the year. Jack usually puts in an appearance around" Head of the River" time, and, of course, tows the CoI1~ge racing boat to the starting line. lad~ Bailey, another of the "younger" Old Boys, is in the State Treasury Department. He developed this year in to an excellent runner, lowering the 880 yards club track record. While training for the Old Boys' relay race he unfortunately injured a lung and passed a fortnight in St. John's Hospital.

Jobll T,auall, one of the recent Old Boys to be admitted to the legal profession, fO\ved in the 'Varsity Eight on two occasions, and now plays Rugby under the same colours.

Arthur Deakin. (1906) is a partner in the engineering firm of Evans, Deakin & Co., located in Brisbane.

THE HOCKEY The Old Boys' llockey Club has now concluded, with a splendid record, its activities for the 1934 season. The Club i< comprised of three teams, with a membership of thirty-six, which is very satisfactory, seeing that, when first organised in 1932, we could muster twelve players only.

The A2 Grade team, which is our number one Eleven, was successful in winning the Challenge Cup, defeating Clarell10nt Cricketers by one to nil. They also played Old Scotch Collegians in the final for the prcmiership cup, but were defeated by two to nil. Congratulations, Scotch.

The following players were selected for this team:-T. Lalor (Captain), A. Scott (Vice-captain), C. Robinson, J. Quigley, L. Parker, G. Cogan, f. Lavan, G. Cooper, C. Cooper, G. Ardagh, A. McLean, E. McNamara, B. Conroy, J. O'Hara, S. McQuire, W. Noonan, H. Gallagher, and A. McHenry.

The Bl Grade Team is our second string, and ably upheld the

name of the Club in this division. They wrested the Challenge Cup from the representatives of the Perth Club after playing a draw in the first game, the scores in the play-off being two goals to one. This team also played the Fremantle Club in the Premiership Grand final, but were beaten, two goals to one.

The players in this gradc were selected from the following:­ A. McHenry (Captain), L. Parker (Vice-Captain), O. Lums, B. Lavan, F. Parker, K. Morrissey, C. O'Sullivan, R. Neil, \Y/. Noonan, K. Kennedy, R. Kennedy, A. McLean, R. McLcan, R. Comoy, S. S. McQuire, V. Parker, D. Collier, and J. O'Hara.

The third team, playing in the 132 Grade, struggled manfully against misfortune, for at various times they had to suffer the loss of some of their best players, who were called upon to fill vacant positions in the two higher teams, yet they finished fourth in their competition. This team was chosen from the following players:­ F. Farrelly (Captain), M. Lane, P. Lane, P. O'Mahony, B. Lavan, M. Connaughton, V. Durack, K. Kennedy, R. Kennedy, J. Ed­ mondson, V. Parker, N. Sullivan, D. Collier, and E. McNamara.

The fact that at several times during the season wc were in need of players, even with our membership of thirty-six, shows that if wc wi.,h to field two more teams next season, wc shall require thirty more players. Therefore, we suggest that any Old Boys who are interested in playing hockey should hand in their names to the Secretary of the A"ociation. \'\fe take this opportunity of congratulating Tom Lalor, our Club Captain, on his selection for the Tnter-State Hockey Team which represented W.A. at the Carnival held in Adelaide during September. This \Vas Tom's second trip, but his first as a member of our Club.

A very successful trip wa., made during the week-end, 13 th and 14th October, to Narrogin, where we defeated the home teams in both games.

The season concluded with the annual Club Dinner, held thi, year on the 27th October-Inter-School Sports' Night--which was thought by the thirty odd members present to be very appro­ priate. This function was thoroughly enjoyed by all present (thanks to the umtinted trouble of Mrs. T. Lalo,.) , and considered to be the very best way in which to finish a very enjoyable season, Don't forget, we need new members!

On the 20th October, 1934, an air-race over 15 miles was conducted at MayJ:l1lds. The competitors were representatives of the Public Schools ex-scholars, who agreed that the winner should present the trophy to his College and receive a miniature for himself.

The successful flier was Clcm Bigncll, of C.B.C. Clcm attended the College from 1914 to 1920. He was a good all­ round athlete, representing the School in football, cricket, and shooting. Congratulations to you, Clem, first" I-lead of the Air."
