b) Wednesday service attendance has tripled.

c) Discipleship group has reached 100 people.

d) Just Faith group started Tuesday evenings.

e) Service continues to be a focus.

f) Trinity is active in the Phoenix community as well as around the diocese by taking on leadership

opportunities on the Standing Committee and Bishop’s Transition committee.

g) Trinity staff is highly regarded for providing expertise in multiple arenas around the diocese.

h) Stewardship levels are at an all time high.

i) Upcoming centennial celebrations will be very exciting.

j) Plans are in the works for additional educational offerings on Sunday mornings.

k) In our community, no one is a stranger. Everyone belongs to one another and to Jesus.

The Senior Warden reflected on our ability to faithfully overcome the challenges we faced over

the year. Trinity continues to live out our mission of worship, service, and fellowship so that

we can welcome all to be transformed by Christ. She continued by elaborating on several

additional service activities: i) School partnerships

ii) Music and art offerings iii) Prayer chains

iv) Many international discipleship opportunities.

v) Diocesan involvement on committees.

vi) Offered thanks to John Phebus, Chris Bates, Ernie Stuckey for being tri-chairs of the capital campaign.

vii) Offered thanks to Gail Browne for spearheading the centennial celebrations.

In closing, Ms. Derrick called us to further service and involvement in the Cathedral community.

Dean’s Report for 2020 Hear,O Israel:The Lord is our God,the Lord alone.You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,and with all your soul,and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. -- Deuteronomy 6:4-8 ~~ The year 2020 opened with great promise and great purpose. The staff at Trinity was preparing to welcome the Princeton Seminary Choir, as they introduced a new bilingual hymnal while touring the United States. Ministry leaders were preparing to begin a Centennial Year celebration that would commence in September 2020. Our music program was preparing to host Kimberly Marshall as the recitalist of the Helen Peel Memorial Organ Concert. Later, Music at Trinity welcomed Janet Fishell as the featured artist for the organ rededication.

The year also began with a robust offering of formation opportunities, including weekly Godly Play and Youth formation, along with a class for adults entitled “Walk in Love: Episcopal Beliefs and Practices.” The energy as the year opened was one of promise and enthusiasm.

By March 13, everything had changed. In the dean’s commentary on that day, I wrote: “We are called into our highest calling during this time: loving God with all our heart, mind, and strength, and loving our neighbors as ourselves. Christ calls us to be a good neighbor and to show mercy. It is the church’s time to assume our greatest responsibility and to proclaim good news to all people. Jesus set the best example of how to offer God’s love and mercy. Time to go and do likewise!”

Upon writing my remarks on the 13th, our world got smaller. We were told to stay at home. Many public establishments closed. Travel came to a halt. Schools went virtual. Churches moved from worshiping in-person to worshiping online only. At times, people were cut off from family members. Hospitals no longer allowed non-essential personnel or visitors to be present. Continuing care facilities no longer allowed people to visit. Life changed dramatically and quickly.

Trinity answers God’s call during times of COVID The people of Trinity saw this moment as a time to answer a higher calling, and together, we actively created ways to expand our ministries to serve our community, through worship, fellowship, and service.

We have responded in the area of worship.

The Trinity community switched to an online platform and offered our first service on March 22. We revamped all of our Holy Week and Easter offerings to conform to the virtual platform, and we immediately began offering daily Morning and Evening prayer online, thanks to the help of ministry volunteers. Our online offerings continue to this day, and we found that our viewership exceeded expectations from the very beginning.

As in-person worship restrictions relaxed, September saw the Trinity community worshiping outdoors at 8 a.m., and every two weeks a new service was added, including an offering at 10 a.m. inside the cathedral and an 11:15 a.m. Spanish service outdoors. As a result of increasing COVID numbers in Arizona, worship services were moved entirely outside in the month of December, and continue outdoors to this day. The cathedral clergy and staff continue to monitor our procedures, and we will return to worship inside our cathedral building once we are able to resume worship indoors safely.

We have created robust fellowship.

Trinity’s clergy and staff immediately responded to the COVID pandemic by creating virtual Bible studies and coffee hours. Furthermore, our Community of Hope, under the leadership of The Rev. Canon Holly Herring, Jennifer Sprague, and Rocko Cook, implemented a comprehensive phone call check-in of every member of Trinity’s community on a bi-weekly basis. The intent of this endeavor was to help people know that although the Trinity community might be separated, we are still united in Christ’s love and God’s care during this very unusual time.

As the year continued, fellowship opportunities continued to expand. The clergy and staff conducted book studies, including Henri Nouwen’s “Following Jesus: Finding our way home in an age of anxiety,” Spanish lessons/conversation, Bible studies, discipleship classes, as well as small group discussions about a myriad of topics. Although our in-person gatherings were canceled, Trinity’s online fellowship continues to see a robust participation with a wide variety of people from the Trinity community.

We have championed and expanded service to our greater community.

While our time of “Babylonian exile” has seen new innovations and expansions of worship and fellowship offerings, our greatest triumph that will be remembered for many generations to come is the fact that Trinity answered God’s call for service to others in new and very big ways. In early April 2020, the chapter created a Benevolence Fund, which to date, has helped members of our community who were in dire need, with disbursements totalling more than $20,000. Our ministry partners at Garfield and Dunbar Elementary have welcomed Trinity’s help in creating food pantries, toy drives, shoe drives, and school supply drives to enhance the educational opportunities for some of the city’s children in greatest need. We conducted a highly successful blood drive to assist our local hospitals. We supported our long-time partner ICM Food and Clothing Bank (now known as Nourish Phoenix) with logistical support, donations of food and clothing, and staffing of volunteers. Furthermore, the people of Trinity have taken care of neighbors, some previously known and unknown, who have come to rely on our individual help for grocery shopping, transportation, and medical assistance.

Trinity’s response to our greater community has been extraordinary and a great blessing to the world!

Looking ahead for 2021 All of what we have accomplished in 2020 will be enhanced and expanded in 2021. Our congregation has become engaged with our mission in ways in which we never thought possible. Your cathedral chapter will begin the exciting work of vibrantly and strategically emerging from this COVID pandemic stronger than ever.

While we offer our sincere appreciation to Kenneth Anthony and Chris Bates for their tireless dedication to the chapter and to our congregation, our annual meeting will see a candidate list of more people standing for election to the cathedral chapter than we ever have had before. We are a congregation that is excited about our future together, because we are listening to the Holy Spirit and we are responding through our thoughts, words, and deeds!

In April, after Easter, we will see Trinity embark upon a practice that is common in the life of the Episcopal Church and its clergy--the practice of sabbatical. In accordance with my work agreement with the cathedral chapter and the diocese, I am entitled to (and expected to take) sabbatical leave after completion of seven years of service. I will be taking time off to pray, to rest, and to study, as well as to reconnect with members of my family in Texas and in other parts of the country. This is a normal, expected practice in the Epsicopal Church, and the idea is to offer this to me as a time of renewal. I am truly excited to spend intentional time listening to the Holy Spirit in discernment, listening to how the people of Trinity will be called into even greater ministry upon my return. You will hear much more about this in the months ahead. I can assure you that preparations have been underway for many months, and the experiences of worship, fellowship, and service of the people of Trinity will continue seamlessly while I take my sabbatical.

Beginning in September 2021, Trinity will celebrate our centennial. We will remember the accomplishments of our past, and we will discern how we will indeed be the cathedral for the next 100 years. Over the next few months, you will begin to hear more and more about events that are carefully curated for your enjoyment. Our goal is for you to immerse yourself in Trinity’s history, appreciate the present day, and dream big for a bright future together.

We will also continue to form a community of pilgrims who will seek to go to the Holy Land in January 2022. All are invited to be a part of this wonderful pilgrimage, which will take place from January 3-15, 2022. Your cathedral clergy and staff, including The Rev. Canon Holly Herring, The Rev. Myra Kingsley, The Rev. Rosa Brown, Dr. Erik Goldstrom, Cheryl Hamati, Gary Gorman, Cliff Golden, Dennis Manuelito, and Clarissa Kubat, are among the most wonderfully dedicated employees I’ve ever seen. We all owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude for all of their hard work during the past year. Thanks to all of my clergy and staff for making Trinity Cathedral the special place that it is for so many!

The people of Trinity inspire me and inspire our world to see the presence of the Living God at all times and in all places Together, we continue onward in 2021 finding new ways to live into our mission: Welcoming all to be transformed in Christ through worship, fellowship, and service.

Report of the Canon Precentor “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom,” the good thief said from his cross (Luke 23:42). There are perhaps no more human words in all of Scripture, no prayer we can pray so well. –Frederick Buechner The pandemic was difficult—instantly—for everyone I know. My first response was to acknowledge this and let it be.

We were not prepared for such a change in “how we do church.” Then I prayed. I began praying Compline on Facebook.

Every night. For people. With people. When all else fails, and Episcopalians don’t know what else to do, we pray—and we pray together. When I am experiencing pain I find that calling, yelling, or sighing out for Jesus in prayer can be enough in a moment.

Finally, I addressed my pain of disconnection. I prayed for connection, prayed connection into life, and turned that life into action. I refused to wait for the coffee shops to reopen or to sit behind my desk waiting for it to be safe for people to come to me. I began the ministry of a mobile pastoral care unit; a spiritual food truck for body and mind. I feared that if I isolated for too long, God could not heal my woundedness. I felt that I needed to go out into the world, be with God’s people, and listen for their sorrows and woundedness. I went and I continue to go.

I engaged this year of isolation directly through the wire-rimmed lenses of the matriarch of our family. Mary Jane Imlay Patterson, my great grandmother, was the first female school teacher in Idaho, a devout Presbyterian, the eldest of nine children of Scottish immigrants, and a divorced mother of eight children, who raised my mother, Kay. I knew “Grandma Pat” as an educator and storyteller and someone who “kept it real.” I endlessly ask myself the question, which she birthed into me: “What is real?” No one ever deceived Grandma Pat and most wouldn’t disrespect her by trying. She told truths and she did so with love. She recognized that empathy and honesty are central to all cultures that choose to be connected.

She told wonderful stories of being a teacher in the 19th century; stories of passion, insight, and inspiration. She made real the story of Jesus; a refugee born into poverty who became the love that redeems our broken world. She understood her role in the Jesus story. She embraced the central message of Christianity that formed me as a priest. I hear her voice and am transported back to her kitchen table.

The message for the followers of Christ was the same when, at the age of 100, Mary Patterson shared it with me, as it is in the 21st century, as it was in the 1st century. God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, is inviting each of us to love God, love neighbor, and love self. By doing so, we are offered the grace of the re— membrance of God’s people to God and to one another. I have experienced this reconciliation—this remembrance— through listening to the stories of God’s people. I have listened to many beautiful stories this year.

I have been enlightened and inspired by you storytellers.Your experiences of pain, sorrow, and suffering—stories of blessings, joy, and wonder have shaped my life these past three years, and in particular, this year. I have been invited to sit in the messiness of the pandemic, absorbing as many feelings as I can. I am encouraged by our woundedness—and in the ways we are grieving and celebrating. Through the miracle of God’s grace and the blessings of our own perseverance, we are becoming gifted and joy-filled healers who are forging a broader vision of spiritual formation that can move us through this period in the life of God’s people. I feel that I have heard, and voiced, in my own frustration, “Can’t we just move on and talk about the future?” We cannot. The stories must be told. The ears must hear. The hearts must feel.

A medida que nuestro mundo continúa luchando contra esta Pandemia Global, sin duda, ha afectado a todas nuestras vidas de una manera u otra.

Rosa+ ~~ This past year has certainly been one for the record books. Finding ourselves locked down and separated from each other has been very trying for all of us. Everything has changed because of the Covid Pandemic. As our world continues to battle this Global Pandemic, doubtless, it has affected all our lives in one way or another. Churches all over the world have felt the impact as well, and our Cathedral is certainly no exception.

We have tried to share our services online so that you can easily watch or listen. Many are watching online, and we are very happy for the high numbers.You may visit our website at or Facebook page to view the Services. We continue to meet outdoor in person at 11:15 a.m. This group has been very stable.

We are going to be doing our best to explore ways we as a church can be a blessing in ministry to our community during this time. We don’t just want to “hide out” but find safe and effective avenues to minister to others.

I trust you are doing well and staying healthy during this extended situation we find ourselves in. Like you, I’m praying God will clear this out so we can get back to some sense of “normalcy”.

Shine in us and through us, Lord Jesus, that we might be a light for your world in this new year. Amen

Annual Report on the Cathedral Music Program The year 2020 began with great promise and several major events in the cathedral music program. The Peel Memorial Concert was held once again in January, with Kimberly Marshall as the guest performer offering works of César Franck and Charles- Marie Widor. A mere five weeks later, we celebrated (with great enthusiasm) the installation of a new organ control system with a Blessing and Rededication of the cathedral organ on Sunday 23 February 2020. The organ was rededicated at the 10 AM Eucharist; James Gerber returned to serve as organist for the service, and the choir presented Herbert Howells’ Te Deum (from the St George’s, Windsor Service) and the Jubilate Deo in C by C.V. Stanford. Several former staff singers returned to sing for the event. In the afternoon, Dr. Janette Fishell, Chair of the Organ Department at Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, gave the rededication recital which included works of Franck, Duruflé, Saint-Saëns, and Vierne. And then COVID hit.

We had barely gotten through the first of the Lenten Organ Recitals and were forced to cancel the remainder of the Music at Trinity series. March 15th was our last in-person worship service with full choir and then all choir activity went on hiatus. We began recording weekly services with one cantor (rotating through the staff singers) and continue to do so. A momentary relaxation in early Fall allowed for socially-distanced quartets (again drawn from the staff singers) broadcast into the worship space from Olney Gallery, but COVID numbers quickly rose and we retreated back to a single cantor for the in-person worship services.

COVID has forced a reimagining of the music program. A service of Choir Compline was devised which allows for the participation of all interested cathedral choir members. Recorded individually and edited together, cathedral choir members read lessons, provide musical intervals, and serve as officiants for this weekly service which “airs” on Sunday evenings. We have also embarked upon several virtual choir projects which involve the whole of the cathedral choir.

These projects edit together well-known works from the cathedral choir repertoire through individual parts and can be heard during the weekly online services (Lessons and Carols featured several of these virtual choir projects). In addition, the cathedral choir participates in weekly Zoom meetings, held at our normal rehearsal time on Wednesday evenings. A weekly “Choir Lab” goes out with the Zoom invite, which includes a full choral score and recording of a piece taken from the cathedral music repertory.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, the 2020-2021 Music at Trinity Series was forced to go entirely virtual. The series features several one-off concerts as well as a more intimate form of Lessons and Carols. In addition, a short, twelve-part series on the cathedral organ “aired” during the summer of 2020 and is still available at trinitymusicaz.org. The ongoing program will offer a virtual organ series during the season of Lent and another solo concert program by our chamber Ensemble-In-Residence, Urban Nocturnes. For more information on the great work accomplished by the Music at Trinity program, I would direct your attention to the Annual Report submitted by Gail Browne and Ernie Stuckey.

There is no way that our efforts would be so rewarding without the hard work of each and every choir member and the host of volunteers who work behind the scenes. This has been a year like no other and a huge thank you is due them all.

Lastly, but certainly not least, I would like to thank the congregation of Trinity Cathedral. We simply would not have the quality music program without your efforts and are most grateful for your support and encouragement, particularly in these most distracted times. Thank you all!

Music at Trinity 2021 Annual Meeting Report from the Music Guild Thanks to the leadership of Erik Goldstrom and the support of our artists and audiences, Music at Trinity was able to creatively meet the challenges of 2020. The Music at Trinity 2020 Spring Concert Series started off on a high note with the celebration of the newly restored Trinity Cathedral Schantz organ. Following the Helen Peel Memorial Concert with Kimberly Marshall in January, we rededicated the organ with a recital by Janette Fishell on February 23. The winter also featured a Choral Evensong and February concerts by resident companies Helios and Phoenix Chorale. Also in February, Music at Trinity hosted a Hoop Dancing workshop and performance by Tony Duncan for Garfield Elementary School fourth-grade students at the Heard Museum (prior to the 30th Annual Heard Museum World Championship Hoop Dancing Contest). But, after presenting the first of our Spring Organ Series Concerts (with Joseph Ripka), concerns about COVID-19 escalated and all concerts scheduled for spring 2020 were cancelled out of concern for the health and wellbeing of our community. The First Friday performances we coordinated in collaboration with the Visual Arts Ministry were also cancelled after March 6. In response to the limitations that the pandemic put on performing artists and their audiences, Erik Goldstrom launched a series of short video broadcasts about the Cathedral organ. This guided tour from the blower room to the organ chambers to the console offered the public a chance to experience the workings of the organ up close. All 12 episodes remain available on the Music at Trinity website (trinitymusicaz.org/virtual-organ-tour). In an effort to continue offering performances by our local musicians, we pivoted to a virtual series for the Fall of 2020. The series featured a recorded concert of solo works by our chamber music-in- residence company Urban Nocturnes, an Art Song (Lieder) concert by Trinity Cathedral staff singers Nina Garguilo and Toby Vaughn Kidd, and an intimate version of our annual Lessons and Carols service. The concerts garnered more than 1000 views on the Music at Trinity website.

We will continue offering virtual concerts in the spring, and have just announced four concerts in our Spring Organ Series and a pre-recorded concert by Urban Nocturnes. In mid-December, in a trial run, we presented Urban Nocturnes in an outdoor concert on the labyrinth. Given the enthusiastic response to this event we will continue presenting outdoor concerts with Urban Nocturnes once a month from January through April.

Our Music Guild group continues to provide essential support to the Music at Trinity Program. We have been meeting via ZOOM and have been working to raise funds to compensate artists for performances and to solicit support for Centennial year commissions in 2021-2022.

Altar Guild The Altar Guild has the honor of serving the congregation and clergy by preparing the sacred space and vessels through which we live our liturgy, weekly. Preparation for a service is a powerful experience that gives Guild members the opportunity to commune with the Divine by performing this activity. Guild members are assigned to one of four teams that meet briefly Friday afternoon or Saturday morning (your preference)once every four weeks, to prepare for their upcoming week. Then they attend a service on the following Sunday (or other days, for special occasions--but only if available). They frequently represent the congregation by carrying down the bread and wine for the Eucharist. After the service there is a brief time devoted to cleaning the vessels used.

Members range in age from teens to, well let’s just say, over teens. Team members become closely bonded, within their teams and with the entire Guild as a whole. Many of us remain on the Guild for years, if not decades. The spirit and pleasure of service is just that compelling. We are 14 members strong and are always looking for new members who may want to help behind the scenes to be an integral part of creating our beautiful services. We can arrange for you to shadow during one of the teams’ preparation times and a Sunday service. As a previous director of the Guild frequently said: “The time is minimal; the rewards, immense!” Then, if it feels right for you, we’d love to welcome you by giving you the chance to altar your worship with us, once a month, too!

We would like to extend our gratitude to Robb Barr, who recently retired as the Altar Guild Director. We give great thanks and praise for the manner in which Robb faithfully served during his time, and for the gentile manner in which he led with exemplary and faithful service. Well done good and faithful servant. We look forward to when we are together again so we may honor him for his service.

Trinity Quilters Quilters have nothing to report. We barely got started on projects for 2020, when everything shut down.

Community of Hope The Community of Hope ministry has ten current members who are trained and commissioned to bring comfort, communion, and a ministry of presence to those unable to make it to church. Utilizing a focus of Benedictine spirituality and presence,Trinity’s Community of Hope normally would reach out and provides pastoral care to those who may be sick, in a healthcare facility, homebound or in need of comfort. The pandemic prevented members from physically being with those in need, but the ministry has continued with phone calls and sympathy cards for those in the congregation who have lost loved ones. Members of the team attend a weekly pastoral care meeting at Trinity. If you or someone you know is in need of a lay pastoral care phone call, please let someone from the Cathedral staff know.

Cathedral Prayer Chain The Cathedral Prayer Chain engages in intercessory prayer, responding to prayer requests sent to the e-mail listed in the Sunday Bulletin, my own e-mail, or to Cathedral clergy and staff, who then pass the request on to me, to be edited and sent out to the Prayer Partners by e-mail. We have 35 faithful members currently, as we grieve for those lost to Covid-19.

Lector Report In the astonishing year of 2020, Trinity Cathedral lectors rose to the challenge in late March when, due to the pandemic, the Cathedral began online video services only. Many readers already on the lector roster were able to make videos of the Scriptural readings and the Prayers of the People. It took some adjustment, with lighting issues, sometimes strange camera angles (me), and distracting ceiling fans. Thanks to the Rev. Holly Herring’s and Gary Gorman’s instruction, help, and patience and the good file transfer system, we all improved, and it became easier.

When on September 13 the Cathedral was able to open again in a limited fashion, we had many lectors who immediately stepped up to read in person at the outdoor services and later in the Cathedral itself. Some read both online and in person. Currently we have 26 lectors, though we were shocked and saddened by the loss of two of our group, Ellen Galecki in April, and Tom Weller in early December.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH The Rev Myra Kingsley, Deacon

Voltaire’s hero in the land of Eldorado saw no temples and wondered if the people had any faith in God; he was told that they had indeed, but that their worship was constituted by their daily work. (Candide, Chap xviii) In many ways it has been a strange year at Trinity Cathedral. We have not been able to worship in our Cathedral space, except for a few short weeks, we hold our services outside without a choir, community singing and all the liturgical formalities that we are used to and love so much. Much of what was normal and routine has been disrupted and different. The great doors are literally closed.

And yet……..the church doors may be closed, but Trinity Cathedral is open as ever, to do the work that God has given us to do. Here is a short list of all that we done, it is not complete, inevitably I will have forgotten someone or something, so I apologize for missing it, but know that everything that you all have done this year is recognized and appreciated.

Well over 200 cases of water donated to the Salvation Army for heat relief

•

When the schools initially shut down, members in our community donated art supplies, crayons, books, and games for Garfield Elementary school to be able to distribute to their families.

•

As part of the Garfield Partnership Team, we baked and distributed cookies to all of the teachers from Garfield and Dunbar Elementary School to thank them for adapting and changing to an all online teaching environment.

•

As the pandemic worsened and families were losing their incomes, the Mollen Foundation (A Garfield Partner) applied for and obtained a grant to supply fresh produce to families through January of 2021. Trinity Cathedral offered pantry supplies to supplement, and when we offer pantry supplies we do not stint! Two full carloads of food has been delivered to Garfield Elementary School each week since this summer.

After hearing how much the children enjoy the snacks, there are always sufficient boxes of Cheez-it’s, Goldfish Crackers and the like, along with all the necessary items for our families to have nutritious meals! No one in the Garfield Community is turned away and we are feeding our community!

We were able to supply five complete Christmas meals for families identified by Ms. Bernal, Principal of Garfield Elementary.

We adopted 45 children identified by Nourish Phoenix (formerly ICM Food and Clothing Bank). Each child received two gifts, and article of clothing and a toy. The CEO of Nourish Phoenix, reported that one Mom began to cry and said that she had told her kids “there would be no Christmas this year”. We were able to bring Christmas to children, bringing them and us a little hope that the coming year things will be better.

We also supplied 400 craft packs for the Garfield Christmas Party, held in a safe socially distanced way this year.

We also contributed toys to the Garfield Christmas Party which brought joy to so many kids.

•

The crafters, crochet, knitters and sewers have kept up their work in this time, knitting and crocheting hats and gloves for the homeless. AND we just delivered enough masks, in multiple kids sizes for the children of Garfield and Dunbar Elementary Schools. The kids will be safe and ready when they are able to return to in-person school.

So many of you supported these ministries with your money, time, presence and words of kindness, encouragement and love. None of this work would be possible without you.

Trinity Ushers Amid this year of a pandemic, Trinity Cathedral has managed to amass a group to assist in ushering at the 8 am and 10 am services. We are very grateful to these individuals! Understandably there are many concerns of many who have not quite reached that level of comfort to help. When this pandemic is brought under control, we hope many of our veteran ushers will consider returning to assist.

Health Ministries Annual Report Trinity Health Ministries began 2020 by discussing the topic of loneliness and its effect on health, looking at an event with Rev. Patrice Al-Shatti, Deacon at All Saints Phoenix. The Health Ministries members have checked in on each other and the congregation and advised leadership on how to safely re-open for in-person worship and when. In 2021, Health Ministries will reconvene and invite congregational input on how to address loneliness.

Lectio Divina at Trinity Cathedral Lectio Divina (“Divine Reading�) is a group that was started by Mark Sutherland some time ago. It is derived form an ancient monastic practice of scripture reading that involves meditation, reflection and prayer. It is intended to open the participants to God’s word in their lives.

The group has suspended meeting because of Covid.

loosely knit craft guild (aka LKCG) 2020 being what it was, record keeping was not our strong point. Still, sharing the love for our 4th year running, Loosely Knit Craft Guild with our Caring Crafting sisters from All Saints was fortunate to be able to do what we could for our neighbors on the street, four Title 1 schools including Garfield Elementary and the fine folks over at Nourish Phoenix.

Our last solid numbers represent the least of what was accomplished: • 150 handcrafted gloves, scarves & beanies • 75 pairs of men’s bombas socks • 50 bags with toiletries & feminine products • and 25 assorted totes Plus, in conjunction with the local group Mask: Phoenix, we participated in the production and distribution of over 3,000 homemade reusable masks.

We are truly blessed.

Annual Report for Greeter’s “Welcoming God’s Guests” The Greeter Ministry is made up of a team of parishioners, from ages 17 to over 70 plus who, enjoy welcoming regulars as well as new-comers to Trinity Cathedral. Our newest greeter is a high school student who also volunteered for our All Saints Day celebration. An amazing connection introducing a new member to the congregation.

“Greeting,” is seen as an opportunity to welcome everyone from all of life’s communities. The homeless, the longtime participants, regulars, as well as the folks that only arrive for holidays, are all made to feel welcome and appreciated at Trinity Cathedral.

It is our job to welcome everyone with a warm smile and a loving heart. To direct them to our services, our coffee cart, our restrooms, our children’s’ facilities and to answers questions and / or direct them to where the answers can be found.

It is a Greeter’s responsibility to know the whereabouts of details of our campus, roles and names of our clergy members, and a brief history of our buildings. We want everyone who visits Trinity to feel valued, appreciated, and comfortable.

Remembering that we are often the first person a visitor encounters, it is important that a sense of being welcome is first and foremost on our agenda.

Currently, due to the Covid problem we have cancelled the Greeters job until further notice. Sadly, this year we lost one of our finest greeters to the Covid Pandemic, Barbara Avallone. She will be sadly missed as she was a shining example of our greeters. She and her husband, Rick made a great team. Together, they personified the role of Trinity Greeters.

Anyone who enjoys welcoming and loves people young and old, can be a Greeter at Trinity Cathedral.

Most Greeters are called upon once or twice a month to serve our community. Scheduling is done on a three-month basis with additional messages to all Greeters when extra people are needed for a special event. Flexibility of scheduling is available through our notices of Substitute-Needed plan that works with our scheduling. Over the past year it has become a much more accepted method of scheduling among all greeters. Response to new needs as has been great!

A training program is set up for new Greeters that assures that members of our ministry are prepared and familiar with our Trinity campus, clergy, staff, and traditions.
