Leading on and off the Field

Hondo Franklin ’28 is thriving as a student and athlete at Trinity

If you’ve been to a Trinity University football game, you’ve probably seen Alexander “Hondo” Franklin ’28 leading the Tigers from under center as quarterback and one of the team’s captains—a leader on the field and a constant source of energy and heart. Off the field, he brings that same passion to his academics and living out his values.

This finance major and sport management minor from Dallas chose Trinity because he knew it would give him the opportunity to pursue his dreams while having the support of a tight-knit community.

“I chose Trinity because it’s always been my dream to play college football, and I really had a great time on my official visit,” Hondo says. “Our coaching staff and my teammates are another big reason, and I wouldn’t trade them for anyone. Another reason is the prestigious academics here. It’s an amazing place where you can both get a great education and play some great college football.”

As quarterback, Hondo helped lead his team to the NCAA Playoffs in 2024 and 2025 and to be named co-champions of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) in 2024. He was named to the

SAA Academic Honor Roll in 2024 and earned All-SAA Honorable Mention in 2025. Hondo was also one of seven Trinity football players named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team for the 2025 season.

While Hondo admits that balancing academics with athletics can be difficult, he knows he’s got a whole community of Tigers to lean on. “Your coaches and teammates are people you can always rely on, and they’re always there to support you,” he says. “Trinity Football has shaped who I am by teaching me the true meaning of family. Our program is built on lifelong relationships and has taught me to be selfless, disciplined, and faithful.”

Some of his favorite moments with the team don’t even happen on the field. “The night meetings during fall camp, especially our lip sync battle night, are unforgettable,” Hondo recalls. “After long, hard days, coming together to laugh and have fun reminds us why we do what we do.”

Whether he’s on the field or in the classroom, Hondo’s leadership shines through his gratitude, humility, and commitment to those around him.

At Trinity, our students don’t just excel academically—they compete, connect, and experience nature through varsity athletics, intramurals, club sports, and Outdoor Recreation.

STEM Research Changes Lives

Louis Stokes Alliance and USAA-supported projects open up new possibilities for young researchers

At Trinity University, a new generation of scientists is finding its voice—and its confidence—through the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) ¡Adelante! program. Backed by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and strengthened by additional funding from USAA, LSAMP matches underrepresented STEM students with research experience, mentorship, and a community that believes in their potential.

Part of a larger, $2.5 million NSF grant, this program is the latest initiative in a hallmark collaboration

among four San Antonio universities— St. Mary’s University, Our Lady of the Lake University, the University of the Incarnate Word, and Trinity University—first launched in 2022. So far, the ¡Adelante! initiative has supported 183 students, who gain hands-on research roles, professional development, and access to field trips and speaker events that connect them with STEM leaders across the city. See how this grant continues to change lives and open new doors to the future for Tigers.

Julian Perez ’27

Julian, who is majoring in engineering science and minoring in mathematics, physics, and theatre, hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in human-robot interaction and eventually work with a federal agency like NASA.

“At Trinity, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with faculty on research projects,” Julian says. “I was able to come up with my own project related to a professor’s lab, which is a hands-on experience that isn’t usually done until you’re a Ph.D. candidate or grad student.”

Julian’s research, “Enhancing Haptic Fingertip Feedback via Pneumatic Actuators,” was recently published. He designed and ran all experimentation under the mentorship of Engineering Science Professor Emma Treadway ’11.

Natalia Araniva ’27

Natalia is a biochemistry and molecular biology major on the pre-med track, hoping to become a physician. After her first year, she applied through LSAMP to a 10week summer research program.

She has continued to conduct research every semester and recently earned a hybrid researchinternship role at a local medical school. Her work uses yeast as a model for human cells.

For Natalia, LSAMP’s impact has been transformational. “Not only can I do research and be in a research lab, but now they’re also helping me pay for my textbooks. They helped me get ready to study,” she says. “Having that sense of belonging here at Trinity, this was really important to me.”

Learning by Living

Claire Elliott ’26 spent her fall semester immersed in Peruvian culture

Global learning isn’t just found in books—it’s lived, shared, and discovered every day.

This is what Claire Elliott ’26 realized during her study abroad trip to Peru through the SIT Indigenous Peoples and Globalization program. This Spanish and political science double major with minors in linguistics and women’s and gender studies spent the Fall 2025 semester diving deep into the culture, history, and contemporary life of Peru’s Indigenous communities.

While Claire took some lessons in a classroom, the majority of her trip was spent learning by experiencing firsthand the culture of the Indigenous communities. Claire lived with two homestay families during her trip, one in the bustling city of Cuzco and one among the Uros people of Lake Titicaca on the breathtaking Taquile Island. She also got to spend three weeks traveling to the Peruvian Amazon and Machu Picchu. Throughout it all, Claire strengthened her Spanish skills, learned some basic Quechua, and gained invaluable insights into how Peru’s Indigenous communities are finding ways to preserve their culture in the face of rapid globalization.

“When I wasn’t visiting Indigenous communities, I’d start my day with a huge breakfast and a walk to class through historic Cuzco, once the capital of the Incan Empire,” she says. “My courses explored

the vibrant traditions and modern challenges of Indigenous groups across the Andes and Amazon.”

When class wrapped up, Claire met up with friends to hike, explore museums, or grab pastries and play cards in the town square before returning home for dinner with her host family.

“There were Incan ruins just 15 minutes from my house,” she shares. “And with 3/4 of the world’s alpaca population in Peru, I saw some almost every day!”

From the ancient stones of Cuzco’s town square to the warmth of her host family’s kitchen, Claire’s semester abroad in Peru was more than a course—it was a chance to learn about a community while living within it.
