1] Tigers in sororities and fraternities battled it out at Greek Olympics on the intramural field. 2] The Trinity community enjoyed some delicious treats while exploring the newly renovated Coates Esplanade at the Chocolate Fest. 3] A Goat Yoga event brought the perfect mix of calm and chaos to campus, giving our students a chance to stretch, laugh, and snuggle with some furry friends before diving into finals week. 4] At Tiger Fest, students came together to celebrate the last day of classes with an afternoon featuring food trucks, bumper cars, a caricature artist, a rock wall, a mechanical bull, a super slide, and an obstacle course. 5] Tigers took a finals study break to meet their friends for Late Night Breakfast in Mabee Dining Hall.

Along the Coates Esplanade, around the Miller Fountain, or at the Parker Chapel Courtyard, you’ll find not only some nice places to study or unwind but also fun events put on by one of our nearly 150 student organizations or one of the staff-run offices on campus.

In (and Out of) the Classroom Get a glimpse of four hands-on courses from 2024-25.

Adventure Writing What better way to explore adventure writing than with an actual adventure?

Students from English professor Kelly Grey Carlisle’s “Adventure Writing” course and Trinity’s Outdoor Recreation paddled through Woodlawn Lake, where canoeing through the wind became part of the lesson plan. Alongside ducks and geese on blustery open waters, students reflected on the environment around them and the stories it holds.

Learning outside the classroom reminds us that writing inspiration can come from anywhere—even a windy canoe in the heart of San Antonio’s West Side.

Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting Hands-on learning and healthy competition come together to lend a helping hand.

Students in accounting professor Amy Foshee Holmes’ “Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting” held a fundraiser in partnership with THRIVE Youth Center for homeless young adults in the San Antonio community.

They set up collection bins across campus and split up into four teams to see who could collect the most non-perishable food items, individually packaged snacks, bedding/sheets, paper products, cleaning products, and toiletries. The class raised a total of $2,597.10 in cash and donation items!

Archaeology of Trinity University One man’s trash is another student’s treasure.

Led by sociology and anthropology professor Jennifer Mathews, in collaboration with University Archivist Abra Schnur, students in “The Archaeology of Trinity University” collected artifacts from Trinity’s campus related to its history as an abandoned limestone quarry and illegal dump site in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

At the end of the course, the students held an exhibit of their findings. From Pearl beer bottles to pearlized oyster shells, students shared connections between artifacts and their contexts.

Speaking Physics What is it about physics that we love?

This is the question physics professor Nirav Mehta invited his students to explore in “Speaking Physics.” In this course, there’s no set curriculum—just curiosity and the freedom to explore.

Students built, produced, and staged their own physics demonstrations using their own imagination and help from Trinity’s Makerspace, a unique, all-in-one design and machine shop with state-of-the-art tools and tech. The course culminated with the premiere of a fully staged show of experiments and demonstrations of different physics concepts and principles.

Striking Goldwater

Two Trinity researchers secure a prestigious STEM scholarship

Two Trinity University students have struck gold in the research world.

Chemistry major Marc Ewe ’26 and biochemistry and molecular biology major Megan Tansiongco ’26 have been selected as Goldwater Scholars for the 2025-26 academic year. They competed against a pool of more than 1,300 students nominated by 445 academic institutions to receive this prestigious scholarship, which supports students who intend to pursue research careers in STEM. As part of their Goldwater Scholarships, the students will work alongside faculty mentors in their fields to conduct research throughout the academic year.

Marc Ewe ’26 Marc will work alongside Trinity chemistry professor Adam Urbach for his Goldwater Scholarship. Marc says his time in Professor Urbach’s bio-organic chemistry lab has helped solidify his plan to pursue chemistry research as a career. Marc’s been working in the lab for two summers, and in the summer of 2024, the project was his to design and lead, with his mentor allowing Marc to work as independently as possible.

“While it was challenging to design new experiments, troubleshoot issues,

and consistently step back from bench work to access data and leads, it was also one of the greatest summers of my life,” Marc says. “I experienced what it is like to be an independent research scientist, with all of its hardships and rewards, and I knew that I wanted to make that a part of my life going forward.”

For his Goldwater Scholarship, Marc will conduct research on the development of small-molecule drugs and their interface with biologics for industry.

Megan Tansiongco ’26 Megan will work alongside three mentors, including Trinity chemistry professor Christina Cooley and UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) Hughes Medical Institute investigator Reuben Harris, and a UTHSA Ph.D. candidate.

Megan is an inaugural scholar in the South Texas Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program at UTHSA. Through this program, she has participated in summer research in Harris’ lab while continuing her work during the year in Professor Cooley’s lab.

“These experiences have taught me the difficulty and the beauty of scientific research while further cementing my future aspirations,” Megan says.

“Continuous exposure to the rigor and standards that are set by my university and my lab has allowed me to build the self-esteem necessary to succeed in an undoubtedly challenging profession.”

For her Goldwater Scholarship, Megan will conduct research on novel immunotherapies and translate findings into active clinical trials.

Big-Time Business

Two Trinity business majors score top summer internships

Hands-on experience is key to preparing our students for their careers. During the academic year and summer, Trinity students from all majors intern with local and global employers, applying what they learned in their courses and gaining real-world experience in their field.

Hear from two Trinity students who conducted some big-time business in their internships this past summer.

Isabella Mantilla ’26 | J.P. Morgan Meet Isabella, a triple major in mathematical finance, economics, and business analytics with minors in mathematics, data science, and finance from Quito, Ecuador.

This summer, Isabella interned in the International Private Bank at J.P. Morgan, where she worked closely with bankers, investment specialists, wealth advisers, and lending specialists to help support client needs.

She was most excited to see how longterm client relationships are built and learn how to develop strategies, conduct market research and analysis, and

collaborate with different teams to create solutions to meet client goals.

“Financial well-being is a lifelong journey, and I love the idea of walking alongside clients, celebrating their milestones and helping them navigate challenges,” Isabella says. “I hope to become someone people can truly trust with their financial goals. This internship was more than just a learning opportunity—it was a meaningful step toward building the kind of career where I can support clients throughout their financial journeys.”

Jose Salazar ’26 | McKinsey & Company Meet Jose, a business analytics major and computer science minor from Caracas, Venezuela.

This summer, he interned with McKinsey & Company, a leading global management consulting firm.

While the application process for this internship was quite rigorous, Jose says he was able to draw on his experiences as president of Trinity’s chapter of the Alpha Kappa Psi business and professional development fraternity and the support of Trinity’s Center for Experiential Learning and Career Success to help him succeed.

Consulting is an incredibly dynamic industry that allows Jose to help solve some of the most difficult problems facing businesses.

“An exciting aspect of this position is that we worked on projects in places like New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Mexico City, and Madrid, to name a few,” he says. “I was very excited to work on all types of problems without being restricted to any single function or industry. I would be very enthusiastic about joining McKinsey after graduation as a full-time business analyst.”

International Internships Through qualifying study abroad programs, students can intern with nonprofit and business organizations across the world, becoming better global citizens and growing their career experience.

Internship Credit Internship courses can be found throughout Trinity departments, and students can earn up to six academic credits for internships that complement their academic program.
