WAYNE AND CHERYL SMITH PLEDGE $1 MILLION TO HCAD

Distinguished health care executive and Trinity graduate Wayne T. Smith ’72 and his wife Cheryl, pledged $1 million to support the Health Care Administration program and Center for Leadership Development in Health Management at Trinity. The gift goes a long way in advancing Trinity’s Campaign for Health Care Administration and will be used for program enhancements. “Trinity University is very grateful to Wayne and Cheryl Smith for this gift and the many ways they support our program,” said Trinity President Dennis A. Ahlburg. “The need for health care leaders who are capable of exceptional management improvements and innovation has never been greater; the Smiths’ gift will help Trinity prepare these future professionals.” Smith was the recipient of Trinity’s Health Care Administration Alumni Association Duce Award in 2005, and he was also honored by the Auburn University Alumni Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Smith is chairman of the board, president, and CEO of Community Health Systems, one of the country’s leading operators of general acute care hospitals. For the last ten years, Modern Healthcare magazine has listed him as one of the “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.” “As a health care leader, Wayne Smith recognizes the importance of combining strong business skills with a passion for improving people’s lives,” said Mary Stefl, chair of the department of Health Care Administration. “His gift will create a legacy for future health care professionals.”
