City gears up for MLK events nTrinity and San Antonio commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. for 25th year

Trinity University’s annual efforts to honor King’s legacy involves active participation in the march and a lecture series.

This year’s public lecture

awards for “Growing Up X,” Shabazz finished her new illustrated book, “Young Malcolm,” which will be released in spring 2012.

Organizing programs to promote higher education as an option for inner city youth, Shabazz also serves as a mentor for the We Are Family Foundation, various group homes, lock-up facilities and high schools through a youth empowerment program.

Shabazz’s father, Malcolm X, was a controversial Black Nationalist and human rights leader during the Civil Rights movement. Her mother, Betty Shabazz, was an educator and civil rights advocate.

The 2.75-mile Martin Luther King, Jr. March will take place on Jan. 16 in San Antonio’s historic East Side and will mark the city’s 25th year commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr.’s contributions to the civil rights movement.

The march is expected to draw over 100,000 people and is the largest march of its kind in the country.

Trinity University participates annually in this event and will

features Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz, at 7 p.m. on Jan. 17 in Laurie Auditorium. Shabazz, an author, producer and social justice activist, will discuss her book, “Growing Up X,” according to Trinity’s website. She serves as a project adviser on the PBS documentary, “Prince Among Slaves” and on New York City Opera’s Artistic Committee.

Notable politicians among guest lecturers n Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Governor Jeb Bush will speak on campus this spring

Trinity University is featuring several influential guest lecturers covering a wide variety of topics this spring.

The spring 2012 Distinguished Lecture Series speaker is former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani who will speak at 7:30 p.m. on April 4 in Laurie Auditorium.

His speech, “What the 2012 Elections Should be About,” will address topics outside of the normal political canon. Giuliani’s speech and all other Distinguished Lecture speakers are made possible through an endowment created by Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Brown.

Jeb Bush, former Florida governor, head of his own consulting business and chairman for the Foundation for Excellence in Education, will speak at Trinity at 7:30 p.m. on March 22 in Laurie Auditorium.

Bush’s speech is titled “Leading the Climate of Change.” Using experience gathered through his political career, he will provide insight into the current American political scene. His speech is the Flora Cameron Lecture on Politics and Public Affairs, a lecture made possible by an endowment gift by Flora C. Crichton.

Robert Wicks, professor of philosophy at the University of Auckland in New Zealand will present “Photographic Perception and the Present Sense of the Past: Reflections on Roland Barthes’s Camera Lucida” at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 in the Stieren Theater.

Campus changing nProgress on CSI and other construction continues as students return for new semester

As the spring 2012 semester begins, several construction projects around campus are finished or moving forward into later phases.

The Office of the Registrar recently announced in an email that the five-story CSI hub which was originally supposed to be completed in time for spring classes will not be opening as planned.

According to the email, the CSI building will be open for classes soon, and a contingency plan has been put in place for those classes originally scheduled to be held there.

When this phase is complete, some of the newly available facilities will include traditional classrooms, a lecture hall and chemical storage space.

Phase 3 of the CSI construction work, scheduled to begin in February, will include the demolition of the Moody Engineering Building along with the adjacent Central Plant and the renovation of the Cowles Life Science Building.

The final project of Phase 3 will be a mild update of the MarrsMcLean Science Center in spring 2013. With a price tag of $108 million and an expansive 280,000 square feet, CSI is a building milestone for the university.

Additionally, the consolidation of the Central Plant facilities is complete. In the East Plant, three new boilers behind Witt Residence Hall will more efficiently provide hot water to campus. Also, two new air conditioning chillers have been installed in the Bell Plant behind the Bell Athletic Center.

In concordance with the operation of these new plants, the Central Plant will be decommissioned and readied for demolition. Deep trenches near the Magic Stones that once showed pipes linking the two

projects have now been filled and landscaped.

ASR outlines

new goals

nAssociation has big plans in store for Trinity during the spring semester

With a new semester descending upon Trinity once again, the Association of Student Representatives has some goals to work toward this spring.

The proposal to increase the student fee has been submitted to the Board of Trustees who will be voting on it at their meeting in the beginning of the semester.

ASR will be working on several issues directly related to the student activity fee change.

In an email, ASR President Logan Walsh said ASR will need to revamp the voting procedures in the constitution to take full advantage of the changes to the student activity fee. This will require a full campus vote which will likely take place alongside elections for ASR officers.

To facilitate the voting process, ASR is currently looking at implementing a secure electronic voting system. Ideally, this system will be available for other organizations to use, although the funding will come from the ASR account rather than the student activity fee.

Walsh said they are unsure at this point whether electronic voting will be ready for this round of elections, but it will hopefully be in place for future ASRs. They are still looking at options and need to deal with ITS approval and integration before putting such a system to use.

Individual senators are also pursuing a variety of issues either as individuals or in teams, Walsh said. ASR’s first meeting of the semester will be announced soon.

Later in the month, Tom Cech, Nobel laureate and distinguished professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, will give a speech titled “RNA Enzymes and the Origins of Life” at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 in Laurie Auditorium.

According to the university’s press release of the event, the speech will focus on how a specific hypothesis about RNA enzymes answers the “chicken and egg” questions posed about the origins of life on Earth.

Cech’s speech is part of the Trinity University Distinguished Scientists Lecture Series, made possible by an endowment gift from Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Brown.

All of these lectures are free to students and the public. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

New semester, new opportunities

After three weeks of living like your only obligations are to pure indulgence and relaxation, you might have dragged your feet a little to classes this first week back at Trinity. The Trinitonian is here to remind you that there are awesome and exciting things happening outside of your Netflix cue.

It’s difficult to get back in the swing of things after any vacation, so we at the Trinitonian have provided a preview of things to come this spring semester to help you kick that holiday nostalgia. The fact that you have to drag yourself out of bed only a couple of hours after sunrise might hurt for a while, but it might sting a little less if you know you’re doing it for an amazing experience.

One of these opportunities that requires waking up early is the Martin Luther King Jr. March this Monday, Jan. 16. This is something that you have to do at least once while you’re at Trinity, although it’s an event worth repeating every year. Rather than sleeping in on this national holiday, put on a pair of sneakers and get to the Bell Center by 8:30 a.m. for the shuttle to the MLK Academy. Every year around 100,000 people march together in celebration of the beloved civil rights leader, making San Antonio’s march the largest in the nation.

Get there early to get a free t-shirt. You’ll feel a great sense of pride and community marching through historic east San Antonio in a sea of maroon. The march is a proud Trinity tradition, and this year is the 25th anniversary of the first march in San Antonio in 1987.

There will be many more opportunities this semester to get involved at Trinity and in San Antonio. For some of us, the next four months will be our last chance before graduation. Here’s to a new year with more opportunities and fewer regrets.

One time, I was an 18-yearold loser who thought that bringing excessive things like three trashcans, a shower curtain, and roller blades to college was a great idea. Three months later, I sold those roller blades on Craigslist, used those trashcans for “emergencies” (read: paying for my bad decisions), and used the shower curtain for a costume I don’t remember wearing to a party.

In case anybody was wondering: yes, my mother is proud. But that’s not what I’ll take away from my experience here at Trinity. Here are the top five gems that will always stick with me, and I feel you all can

around campus, you must exercise every ounce of restraint not to jump on the back of the cart like a savage and shout “TO THE LIBRARY!” So instead, you purposefully take up as much sidewalk space as possible when they’re trying to pass you. Whoops, I always barrel roll to class, sorry. Also – longboarders. I see you. And I’ve never wished for anything more in my life than I’ve wished for you to just hit a pebble and go sailing through the sky.

Meanwhile, I’m a pedestrian who is late to class 70% of the time, all the time.

2. After four years of choking down the bile and ingesting Aramark food, I’m pretty sure my stomach can digest razor blades and silica gel packets with ease. I know, #firstworldproblems – but really, #dogfoodlasagna. Sometimes I find myself in a secluded corner at Mabee, eating the front page of the Trinitonian while tears slowly stream down my face, and not because Yolanda forced me to (even though she did), but because I miss my goddamn BBQ and Miso lines. Such is the hard knock life.

In other news, I’m a terrible person.

what it’s like to be surrounded by hundreds of people who are shouting for literally five hours straight – go outside on Bid Day. Not just by the fountain… anywhere outside. The general San Antonio area. Maybe Canada. You could probably be in Japan and still hear the shrill cries of happy sorority girls. I’m one of them.

I don’t take it back, even if the constant screaming has caused my voice to sound alarmingly similar to my garbage disposal.

Now that I’m a senior, I realize that I’m tired all the time and my parents probably hate me for all the money they’ve spent on me learning things… like how to steal froyo from Mabee (your pockets), how to win a Drag Show, and how to Dougie. Let’s all just stay in school and keep learning things. n

Welcome back to Triniland!

As a (late) holiday gift to you we’ve compiled a list of 8 things you should know that happened in the world while you were eating ham or tofurkey so your teachers don’t think all you did over break was sleep (a totally understandable activity in our book).

1. Plan B and Obama Health and Human Services trumped the FDA’s decision to allow Plan B (“morning after pill”) to be sold over the counter to minors. The decision was long awaited by organizations like Planned Parenthood who tweeted, “very disappointed in HHS decision not to make ‘Plan B’ emergency contraception more accessible to women of all ages.”

2. Ending virginity tests in Egypt Samira Ibrahim stood for women’s rights in Egypt and won her case, banning “virginity tests” in military prisons.

Ibrahim showed courage, coming out on YouTube about her experience as a detainee.

She promotes action, stating “My message to the women of Egypt is take to the streets and don’t be afraid.”

3. #BlueBra Ibrahim was correct when she said, “Today’s verdict is not enough to defend the rights of women [protesters].” Also in December, videos showed a woman being beaten by officers in Egypt. Her abaya was pulled up, revealing a blue bra, which became her namesake in news.

In protest, thousands of women and men marched in the largest women’s demonstration in modern Egyptian history against the violence towards female protesters in Egypt. #Win 4. Personhood Amendment Early November, a vote on a personhood amendment in Mississippi sparked controversy, as the definition for personhood (at the moment

of fertilization) would make certain types of birth control illegal, restrict Plan B and refuse abortion to everyone including survivors of rape and incest. It failed.

5. Macy’s San Antonio Around Thanksgiving, the Macy’s in Rivercenter Mall fired an employee who refused a transgender woman use of the women’s dressing room. A nonprofit law firm is taking up the employee’s case, alleging religious discrimination by Macy’s against the employee.

Transgender rights advocates nationwide applauded Macy’s for its decision.

6. All American Muslim The Florida Family Association attacked TLC’s new show “All American Muslim,” a reality show that shows the daily lives of Muslim Americans. The association pressured many companies to pull advertising, then falsely reported that even more companies pulled advertising— all the while making it look like a grassroots push for morality.

7. NDAA President Obama signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act, also called the “Indefinite Detention Law,” which makes legal the indefinite detention of suspected terrorists without trial. The law is criticized by some as an assault on civil liberties by potentially allowing the government to jail political opponents without trial.

8. Human testing HIV vaccine Three potential vaccines for HIV are starting clinical trials.

Two of them, one in London and one in Canada, are starting or have started human trials.

The Canadian vaccine relies on attacking the entire virus, which differs from previous methods of only attacking a specific segment.

GOP Nomination: Race or last man standing?

OK, it’s time for my quadrennial rant against the contemporary presidential nomination process.

No one would think it reasonable to declare a winner in a hundred yard dash after one step, or a marathon race after less than a quarter of a mile. Nor would we want to set the NFL playoffs or NBA championship field after a one-game regular season.

But that’s what we do in presidential nomination politics.

On Tuesday, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the New Hampshire primary. This is the first primary in a long calendar of primaries that stretches into the month of June. True, Romney won the first contest in Iowa last week – but no convention delegates are awarded at the precinct caucus level, so the only firm delegates Romney has won so far are those from his victory in New Hampshire – a grand total of seven.

Yes, you read that right – he’s won seven delegates. He needs 1,144 to secure the Republican nomination. I know math is tough the first week of the new semester, but seven delegates works out to a whopping 0.6 percent of delegates needed for the nomination.

Which means there is 99.4 percent to go.

So, why do I say “game over”?

Since the modern nomination system was established in the 1970s, every eventual nominee for both major parties has won at least one of the first two races in Iowa or New Hampshire, except for one – and that was Bill Clinton in 1992, who declared a moral victory by coming in a close second in New Hampshire in the wake of draftdodging and womanizing stories.

Also, no one who has won BOTH of the first two races has ever been denied the nomination of his party.

Finally, at the time of this writing Romney is comfortably ahead in the polls in South Carolina, the next primary just over a week from now.

The only thing that can stop Romney now is a YouTube clip of him beating his kids or torturing cats. And if you have access to such a scene, you should email the Gingrich campaign – they’re on the hunt.

So, what can we expect? In all likelihood, South Carolina will end the Huntsman and Perry races.

Gingrich and Santorum may limp on, but neither has the money and national organization to compete with Romney, unless all of the current Gingrich-Santorum-Perry-

Huntsman supporters coalesce behind one candidate. Ron Paul will do what Ron Paul does best – make a lot of noise in a losing effort.

All of which means that by the time the Florida primary rolls around at the end of this month, we may be finished. Ron Paul will play the nuisance for a few more weeks, but the real choice will be over. Of the 2249 delegates at stake in the GOP nomination race, about 87 will have been chosen – under 4 percent of the total.

This means, of course, that those of us who live in Texas will not have a choice come the April 3 primary.

But that’s nothing new. I have been voting in Texas primaries since 1984 – this will be my eighth round – and my vote in the presidential primary has NEVER mattered.

Ever. Not once. The race has always effectively been over by the time it got here. Some wiseacre will no doubt suggest that I change parties, since the Obama-Clinton race DID matter in Texas last time – but that was the great exception that proves the rule. In 2008 we witnessed the highly unusual spectacle of two very well-funded titans willing to battle to the death. The rest of the Democratic candidates followed script and exited very early in the calendar.

That’s really the big lie about the process. The current system was designed after the disastrous 1968 Democratic national convention in Chicago in order to make the nomination more open, fair, and democratic. But because of all sorts of perverse incentives and unintended consequences, very few people have a say in the process.

Candidates spend a year or more raising money and campaigning, only to see their money dry up when they fail to achieve excellence in one early contest. The nomination is secured not when a candidate wins the necessary number of delegates, but when the rest drop out. And that usually happens very quickly.

The result is a two-year election cycle that diminishes the popular legitimacy and constitutional authority of the president, deflects his attention from governing to campaigning far too early in his term, and contributes to a perpetual campaign season in national politics. We often get an overlylong and fatiguing general election campaign that starts as early as March, when most democracies manage to compress their contests into a few weeks.

No one would design such a system from scratch. At the very least, the old-fashioned smokefilled rooms had the virtue of truthin-advertising. n

Greeks and rushees get ready for Bid Day n An inside look at

going Greek

Never fear, rushees. A breakdown of the bidding process is here. This is everything you need to know about going Greek.

RSVP: 1/13 In order to continue rushing, all female rushees must come

by Heidi Lounge and RSVP for at least two Greek organizations that they wish to continue informally rushing.

Silence: 1/23-1/27 Silence is a period of time in which members of a Greek organization may not make any contact whatsoever with rushees due to another fraternity’s or sorority’s event during that time. Each silence usually only lasts about 6 hours per event.

However, once a rushee prefs (see definition Pref Day below), silence only applies to those organizations that the rushee preffed. Between January 23 and January 27 (until Bid Day commences), Greek members may not communicate with a rushee that preffed their organization at all.

Pref Day: 1/24 This is the day that all rushees trek over to Heidi Lounge to submit which Greek organization(s) for which they would like to be considered for acceptance, and in what order. It is vital to your Greek future that you know how this works— whichever Greek organization you put down as number one is the one that gets the chance

The ladies of Zeta Chi Sorority celebrate Bid Day 2011 at Miller Fountain outside Northrup Hall after the celebration was postponed a day because of icy weather. This year Bid Day is on Jan. 27 and will still be held at Miller Fountain. to accept you first. However, if your number one choice does not offer you a bid, your number two organization cannot penalize you for not choosing them first. Thus, you will have an equally good chance of getting into your number two choice. You have the option to “suicide,” meaning submit only one organization for acceptance, but you can also write down every sorority/fraternity at Trinity if that is your wish.

Greek 101: 1/26 Any rushee that plans to accept a bid to a Greek organization is required to attend this information session.

The purpose of Greek 101 is to give rushees a comprehensive

idea of what they need to do to accept a bid on Bid Day. Bid Day: 1/27 This is one of the most exciting days of the year for rushees and actives. In the afternoon, rushees that are accepted into a sorority or fraternity will race up to accept their bids and then go directly to the fountain to celebrate.

Rushees who are not accepted into a Greek organization will receive a phone call to notify them.

Rules & regulations for accepting a bid: To accept a bid, a rushee must be enrolled in at least 12 hours at Trinity, must have

completed one semester as a full time student (or be a transfer student with at least a sophomore standing) and must have at least a 2.3 cumulative GPA. For student athletes, the required GPA is 2.5.

NMO: New Member Orientation NMO is the period of time between a rushee’s bid acceptance on Bid Day to join a sorority or fraternity and their formal initiation into the organization. Depending on the organization, NMO lasts anywhere from three to five weeks. All orientation programs have a nine hours hands-off period during the school week.

The purpose of NMO is to

educate new members about the organization they have just become a part of and create an opportunity for new members to form bonds with both each other and active members.

KRTU continues to host the Year of Jazz in SA n San Antonio jazz

celebration promotes childhood literacy

Trinity University’s KRTUFM 91.7 continues to spread the spirit of jazz throughout San Antonio with the Year of Jazz.

This celebration, which began in October 2011, takes jazz culture to a different place each month.

Over 20 non-profit arts and cultural organizations have partnered up with KRTU to take jazz to the San Antonio community. These organizations include the Brackenridge Park Conservancy, the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, the Carver Community Cultural Center, the Culinary Institute of America, the Guadalupe

Cultural Arts Center and many more.

One purpose of the Year of Jazz is to support early childhood literacy and education. It will show how art and music can help young children learn to read.

During the kick-off to the Year of Jazz, Mayor Julián Castro read “Charlie Parker Played BeBop” by Chris Raschka to the children on stage to start this initiative.

Another purpose is to celebrate the arts and culture of San Antonio. Olivia Revueltas and Aaron Prado, jazz musicians in San Antonio, have already been showcased in the Year of Jazz. The Kris Kimura Quintet, the Three Divas and the King William Jazz Collective are still to come.

This event merges our Trinity community with the San Antonio community by allowing students to interact

with the listeners of KRTU. It gives students a chance to learn more about the arts and culture that make San Antonio a vivid and exciting city.

The Year of Jazz will conclude with a grand finale for the 10th anniversary of KRTU in jazz. The event will take place during October 2012 at Trinity University and will allow jazz fans to support the Trinity students at the radio station.

This month’s event, “The Westside Horns LIVE IN CONCERT,” will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center.

Spring semester at Trinity promises to provide all sorts of entertainment, notably in the realm of the arts on campus. Between the numerous upcoming theatre, music and art productions, there will rarely be want of artsy activities.

The theater department’s first main stage production of the semester will be “The Robber Bridegroom,” a musical by Alfred Uhry & Robert Waldman about a one-part rogue, onepart gentleman Robin Hoodlike character set primarily in legendary 18th century Mississippi. The musical follows this character, Jamie Lockhart, through his escapades in both of these diverging aspects of his character in what promises to be a sometimes dark, sometimes amusing and sometimes surreal production. The musical will be directed by Stieren Guest Artist Tim Hedgepeth and will run Feb. 17 to 19 and Feb. 22 to 25 in Stieren Theater. Following the musical, “Cloud Nine,” a play by Carol Churchill, will be directed by Stacey Connelley and run from April 13 to 15 and April 18 to 21.

From the music department, this semester will be filled with the usual vocal and choral performances toward the end of the semester, as well as some performances interspersed with spring time activities on campus. Trinity’s SOLI Chamber Ensemble will perform on Jan. 27 in Ruth

Through generous National Science Foundation grant funding, Trinity University’s Department of Education is offering scholarships for STEM majors interested in pursuing teaching at the K-12 level.

The Robert Noyce Scholarship program provides up to $30,000 in scholarship support for you to pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, a one-year intensive program in teacher preparation leading to teaching certification in the State of Texas.

Trinity’s teacher education program is recognized as one of the best in the nation and has had a 100% job placement rate since its inception in 1991. MAT graduates in STEM fields are in particularly high demand.

Apocalypse 2012: It’s happening

The Mayan calendar abruptly ends on Dec. 21, 2012. Of course, the only logical conclusion “experts” can come to is that the Mayans must have known that would be the end of the world instead of the more probable reason - they stopped working on the calendar because they were all a little more preoccupied with staying alive against the white men. However, here are four signs why this could be the last year:

The end of the world will happen on Jan. 16. Unlike other doom prophets and crazy screaming homeless men (I fit in both groups), I’ve divined this date using a proven technique that 9 out of 10 dentists recommend - a complicated technique involving a jar of pickles, a wooden plank and two large bags of Twizzlers.

A lot of bad guys died

Almost all notable incarnations of oppression and evil passed away in 2011 (in no particular order of evilness): Kim Jong Il, Steve Jobs, Osama Bin Laden and Muammar Gaddafi. You might think that as a positive, but it isn’t. There’s a vacuum of evil in the world leaving room for the rise of the ultimate evil.

Think Lord Voldemort mixed with Emperor Palpatine. *shudders*

Death of bookstores and (maybe) books Borders closed their doors last

year alongside hundreds of Mom and Pop bookstores around the world.

Bookstores seem to be going the way of the Dodos and intelligence in America. The bookstores that remain feature teen fiction aisles filled with books of glistening vampires, lusty werewolves and one-note characters. I fear for the emotional and intellectual integrity of teenagers – the leaders of tomorrow. I envision a “Fahrenheit 451” dystopia, but with a lot more smut.

“Community” is out and “Twilight” remains These two, more than anything else on this list, mark the low point of humanity. Mother Nature cannot, and will not, tolerate Homo sapiens being the dominant life forms any longer. We’ve clearly squandered our intelligence. Thousands of years of evolution, and what do we have to show for it? A vampire wedding and a homicidal fetus. Mike Judge’s “Idiocracy” is slowly looking more like a documentary.

Films to catch in January

On average, a trip to the movie theatre will cost you roughly $10, and that’s if you don’t want any sort of fattening snack item.

When I watch a new movie trailer or read a synopsis of a movie online, I automatically determine whether or not I think the movie is worth spending $10 on. When I write these articles for you guys, I write with the intention of making suggestions that won’t be a useless waste of your money or valuable time.

For January, here’s what I think you should take some time to see: “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”: Starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Tom Hardy. The story is set during the 1970s and follows Oldman’s character on a search for a supposed mole in the British Intelligence Agency. There is

deception, fabulous performances by some of the best male actors in the business and an interesting story line with the Cold War as the backdrop. If I had to put this in a category I would say “spy-thriller” meets “Academy Award-winning drama”.

“The Iron Lady”: Starring Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent.

Though we are not all British, many of you will be familiar with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her crusade into a male-dominated Parliament in 1979 that kept her at the helm of the United Kingdom until 1990. Hollywood has decided to glamorize her story, and I am all right with this solely because Meryl Streep has been cast in the title role.

The movie is a historical drama, so expect a well-told story with beautiful acting that will likely win Streep an Oscar come February.

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”: Starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. The American version of this novel is dark and disturbing and unsurprisingly fascinating.

Parts are hard to watch because of their graphic nature but Mara’s selfannihilating performance will send you into shock. I’ve never seen anything like this movie before.

“The Descendants”: Starring George Clooney. I have not seen this movie yet but it’s on my list because of all of the hype it is getting from critics and audience members. The film is about a land baron (Clooney) trying to connect with his two teenage daughters in Hawaii. The film is expected to receive Oscar nominations in quite a few categories.

“The Artist”: Starring Jean Dujardin and Bèrènece Bejo. This film will be a little harder to sell you on - I don’t expect anyone but the diehard film fans to venture a risk on this black and white, sometimes silent film. Here’s the story: set in Hollywood in the 1920s, silent movie star George Valentin (Dujardin) wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion. He meets Peppy Miller (Bejo), a young dancer set for a big break and the two of them fall in love and rock the foundations of the silent film business. Try something new; you may love it.

You don’t know San Antonio? There’s no better time than now

Are you feeling complacent?

Bitter and unfulfilled? Either you are getting into the swing of your first marriage or you’re a San Antonio college student saying, “Gee willickers, there just isn’t anything to do!”

That is false, you old timey naysayers. When I first came to Trinity, I would have agreed with you. The Alamo? Please, it doesn’t even have a basement.

Any Pee Wee fan knows that. And I will walk along the Riverwalk anytime I want to find myself

face to greasy red face with a man wearing a shirt that says, “I went to Texas and all I got was this shirt.” You are in Texas RIGHT NOW, why on Earth are you wearing that? And why are your 12 screaming piglets wearing them as well?

Now I am too old, too wise and too well ripened. Does using the word “ripened” to describe myself make you uncomfortable?

Good.

After living in Madrid for a semester, I have learned that if you want to get to know a city, treat yourself like a tourist. Act like it’s a wondrous place you have always dreamed of visiting, like Harry Potter World or the storeroom where they keep Walt

ver since I took this job E as the games columnist for the Trinitonian, I’ve found that I spend a lot less time playing video games. So, as I got home from finals, I decided it was time for a game-binge.

Enter the newest blockbuster from Bioware Austin: Star Wars: The Old Republic, or SWTOR. Released on Dec. 20, few game releases have brought so many disparate factions of nerds together under one banner. Not only were the Bioware devotees and the massively multiplayer

online role-playing game crowd (or MMORPG; think World of Warcraft) more excited than many of us were for our first kisses, but there was also the added frenzy of the Star Wars fan base that has been championing the geek banner for longer than many of us have been alive. The occasion was auspicious to say the least.

Despite this air of intoxicating anticipation, I was nonetheless skeptical. The developers at Bioware have always been invested in storytelling, and the MMORPG genre has never been

Disney’s head.

With a pinch of research, you will soon realize how much San Antonio has to offer. I just did a 10 minute review of top activities to do in San Antonio as listed on the Interwebz, and realized that I have done about 10 – 20 percent of them. I have never been to the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Toilet Seat Museum or even to the Witte.

Nor have I visited even a tiny portion of those little stores and restaurants that populate our fair city. But this semester I make a vow – to breathe, live and walk these streets with a thirst to experience, and one day, to proudly say with confidence and certainty, “I. Know. This. City.”

a beacon of storytelling in the medium. I was intrigued to see how, or if, Bioware could take a game designed for thousands of concurrent players and craft a meaningful experience for a single gamer too.

Luckily, from the 20 or so hours I’ve been able to squeeze in, SWTOR is a flawed yet integral increment in the evolution of storytelling in multiplayer games. Unlike most MMORPG’s, SWTOR’s different character types each have their own narrative, featuring fully voiced dialogue, and each story is partially up to the player to shape.

The game play is similar to World of Warcraft—MMO veterans and newcomers alike will feel immediately familiar with the controls. SWTOR succeeds is in its combination of narrative role-playing elements akin to its lauded Mass Effect series with the addicting mechanics of the modern MMO. It’s exciting stuff, and I’ll be writing more about this game as time goes on. I hope that I can convince a few of you out there to take part in what I would undoubtedly call a historic piece of gaming culture.

Tigers on the track and field team are looking forward to an exciting season full of potential.

Head coach David Svoboda is optimistic about the possibilities awaiting 2012’s group of talented athletes.

“I think this year’s teams are the most talented I’ve seen in my four years at Trinity,” Svoboda said via email. “We have some rough spots to iron out, with some injuries and coaching changes, but if everyone works hard this semester then we won’t have a real weakness.”

Svoboda believes the team is capable of having national qualifiers in every event area. There are 80 athletes on the track and field roster this season, including 25 first years.

The incoming athletes will be expected to really step up as five of the upperclassmen on the team are abroad. The foremost opportunity to do so will be the first time trial of the season, the annual Taco Taco Intrasquad Challenge, which will take place on Jan. 28 at home.

The first outdoor competition will be a home meet on Feb. 11 against partial squad teams.

The first official meet on the schedule, which will be the first big challenge of the year, will be

Feb. 25 at the Trinity Open. The team will compete against eight to ten Division I, II and III teams from Texas.

“I’m looking forward to seeing if we can come together as a team... We came close last year.

The question is: can we put it all together this year, win conference and get back to being a top ten team at nationals?” Svoboda said. “If the team realizes its full potential, it will be a spectacular season.”

It is often mistaken for arrogance, cockiness, or ego. It can turn into those things if one person has too much. Therefore, people seem to lose the concept in real pride.

Real pride is absolutely and whole-heartedly believing in something and wanting to show that belief off to everyone.

This is the time of the year when pride is tested in one of its truest forms: the playoffs.

The playoffs are when the individuals with true pride

shine. They have supported their team through the good and bad and it has finally paid off. It’s easy for them to believe that their dedication to cheering for their team has in some shape or form proved to be essential to their team’s success and in some small way it has. These people are the ones that cheered on their team through the criticism, the injuries and the coaching changes. No matter what has happened they have been there to still have pride in their team.

I was recently lucky enough

to go to the Houston Texan’s first playoff game, ever. The pride of the fans in that stadium was overwhelming. The noise level was deafening during and even after the game. Reliant Stadium sold out at 70,000 people, the most they have ever had at a Texan game. Playoffs are a big deal to Houstonians since it hasn’t ever happened for the Texans and been a long time since the Oilers. I even saw someone in their wedding clothes; now that is dedication.

Even with insults from ESPN, Texans fans came out in flocks, myself included wearing the same Johnson jersey I’ve had from the beginning 10 years ago.

Now that I’ve promoted the Texans enough, let me get back to my real point. Have pride in your team. Even if they lose, represent them to the very end.

If they win, paint your face the team color, dress as their mascot or whatever else fits your fancy. Just show pride in your team.

Happiness, passion and pride in your team can make all the difference; not only in how they perform, but in how you live your life. Having pride in your team opens many more doors to have overall pride in your life.

After a close secondplace finish to DePauw University (Inn.) at the SCAC Championships last April, this season the Trinity softball players have their sights on an SCAC championship and an NCAA playoffs berth.

The most challenging games this season will be against East Texas Baptist University and University of Texas-Tyler, both of whom consistently rank nationally.

The Tigers had a short fall season in which the girls played hard for six weeks and ended with a Round Robin tournament.

They played some good teams in the tournament, including St. Mary’s, Coastal Bend and Our Lady of the Lake. If the fall season gives any indication of the Tiger’s performance this spring, it looks to be an exciting 2012 season.

“My expectations for the team is for them to be better teammates, people and players than the day before,” said head coach Selena Collins in an email. “I expect for my team to get better each and every day and ultimately finish better than we did the previous year.”

Leading the Tigers will be two senior outfielders, Karen MacPherson and Rachel Garrett.

As two of the fastest players on the team, head coach Selena Collins expects them to lead the team in both on-base percentage and bases stolen.

Among the returning players are five juniors and three sophomores, including sophomore shortstop/second baseman Christina Armstrong.

Armstrong was named to the SCAC All-Sportsmanship Team last year, with a .233 batting average, 14 runs, 6 RBI and a fielding percentage of .966.

In addition, Trinity has recruited three new first years who will be immediate leaders, especially at the plate. Brittany Haby, a first year catcher/infielder from Helotes earned District 285A First Team Honors in 2010.

For the past two years Caitlynn Dykes, out of Port Neches, was elected as a First Team All-District catcher, finishing with a team high .436 batting average and collecting 37 RBI. Rounding out the newcomers is the second baseman/outfielder from Houston, Lauren Mercado, who was selected for the AllState First Team, the All-State

Academic Team and the AllDistrict First Team.

The team officially begins the spring season in early February.

The Trinity baseball team has another chance of securing an SCAC title this season under the direction of head coach Tim Scannell, six-time SCAC Coach of the Year. Entering his 14th season, Scannell is Trinity’s alltime leader in victories.

The Tigers ended last season with an excellent 34-13 record and finished 19th in the d3baseball com national ranking.

The team won the conference title for the third time in the past four years, but fell short to Linfield College at the NCAA Regional Tournament.

The Tigers have a solid group of 31 returning players from the 2011 season.

Leading the Tigers on the mound will be senior Ben Klimesh. Klimesh was named

to the All-Region second team last season, with a total of 103 strikeouts that helped him accomplish a 10-2 record and a 3.42 ERA. Also highlighting the pitching staff are juniors Ryan Lucero and Franklin Bay. In the outfield will be senior Nick Pappas, a two-time AllRegion player. Pappas aided the team last season with a perfect fielding percentage and a .351 batting average. Sophomore newcomer from the University of Nebraska, Pat Hirshberg, will also help the outfield this season.

Anchoring the infield will be sophomore middle infielders Christian Muscarello and Nick Iacovella. Last season, Muscarello was named SCAC Freshman of the Year as well as an All-Region third team member.

Adding to the mix will be junior utility player Jonathan Hall. Hall scored a total of 47 runs last season and held a .313 conference batting average.

A crew of five first years will join the talented team this season: short stop Andres Leyva, outfielder Shane Daykin, utility player George Geiger, outfielder and Right handed pitchers Nick Griffith and Zack Speer.

The Tigers will have 25 home games for the regular season, and will open the 2012 campaign with a home game against Schreiner on Feb. 4.
