Official Programme

Tring Athletic v Dunstable Town 3.00pm - Saturday 19th October 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

John Sansbury John Sansbury It is with huge sadness that we share the news that the founder of Tring Tornadoes - John Sansbury - passed away on Friday 4th October, in hospital in Rome. Just over 49 years ago now John ran a football session at Dundale School, for his son Kevin and a dozen or so other boys, which was the catalyst for the club that Tring Tornadoes is today. Over the years many of the players that started with Tring Tornadoes have gone on to play many times for Tring Athletic FC. Our thoughts are with the whole of the Sansbury family at this time and the huge community across Tring and beyond that, through his actions, John and his fellow coaches affected, influenced and enabled with Tring Tornadoes.

As part of our clubs respect for John we will have a minutes applause before the start of today’s game.

Howard Wells OBE Chairman

Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects In his programme notes last Saturday, Kevin Christou highlighted the importance of volunteers in helping to run football clubs. Tring Athletic has been well serviced in this regard, so it is disappointing, yet understandable, that both Dave Stacey and Barry Simmons have decided to stand down from their duties at the end of this season. Between them they have given some fifty years of service and last year Barry received the Herts Sports Partnership’s “Life time Achievement Award” and this year Dave was recognised as Dacorum’s “Volunteer of the Year”. Their decisions must be respected and the Club will discuss an appropriate way to thank them properly. This means that in the months ahead, the Club will have take a different approach to operating effectively. Change presents a challenge, but challenges have to be met. I made it clear when I became Chairman that my intention was”to run a successful business, of which football is the main part, but not the only part”. I have been careful to reiterate that message regularly at a Executive Committee Meetings. Moving forward, it would be helpful for individuals to come forward, who can bring new skills and enthusiasm to the Club. There is no point now in looking backwards. We have a commitment to provide a quality football programme to the coaches and players of six teams. We need too, to ensure that supporters recognise that the Club must move forward with clear priorities, if it is to survive, with a bright future. Meantime, I thank Dave and Barry once again for a commitment, which is almost a lifetime and which will have impacted on their respective families.

Howard Wells OBE Chairman

Match Report Sat 12th October 2019 FA Vase

TAFC 1 - 3 Woodbridge Town WOODBRIDGE SMASH OUR VASE

What is it about FA Competitions this season? By far our two worst performances have been in the FA Cup against Burnham in September and in todays FA Vase match. The two matches had horrible similarities we went behind, came back in to the game and equalised, we started to play better and got on top of the opposition only for a failure to take chances and finally a sending off leading to our downfall. We could make a case to say that we were unlucky and that we had more of the game and created better chances. But, if we are honest, we under-performed by some distance and our opponents, well-disciplined, well organised and highly motivated, were worthy winners. It would be harsh to be too hard on the boys as our winning sequence, packed with high quality, goals and outstanding individual performances, was going to come to an end at some point and perhaps its best that such a lack lustre show wont have an effect on the league table. But a Vase run would have been nice! The first half hour was cat and mouse. They had chances, Charlie, in fine form again, had to halt their striker when he was through, one on one, Jay cleared off the line, whilst at the other end, Charncey and Dan both had opportunities to open the scoring. But it came as no surprise when Woodbridge did score in the 35 minute. This jolted us out of something of a stupor and we quickly equalised with a fine Tommy header from a pin-point Max free kick. 1-1 and this would have been an acceptable way to go in to the half time interval only for a rash Jay challenge in the area leading to a penalty and a 2-1 deficit. Within 5 minutes of the re-start we had a golden opportunity to equalise and to grab hold of the initiative when Max was brought down in the box. Unfortunately Dashs shot was saved and this seemed to take the wind out of our sails and to give Woodbridge the belief that this was their day. Fine margins. We kept on probing, with Frazer prominent, but it wasnt happening and our frustrations grew as Jay and Charncey both missed narrowly. All hope went in the 75th minute when Charncey was sent off. Missing a penalty is forgivable it is hard to feel forgiveness for a violent conduct dismissal. We had no choice but to throw caution to the wind and, inevitably this exposed us at the back, and led to Woodbridge scoring their late third goal which gave the eventual score-line an unrealistic look. So, no FA Cup runs this season. So be it. We need to come out all guns blazing next Saturday against Dunstable Town to show that the real TAFC is not the one that has disappointed in the FA competitions but the one that has been so outstanding in the league all season. Our Opponents DUNSTABLE TOWN HISTORY

The club was established in October 1883, and were founder members of the Bedfordshire FA the following year. In their first competitive match they lost 4–3 to Luton Montrose in the Bedfordshire Senior Cup after being 3–0 up. However, the following season the club won the competition. In 1950 the club joined the Metropolitan League and in 1956–57 they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, eventually losing 3–1 at Margate. In 1961 Dunstable switched to the United Counties League, but left after two seasons to rejoin the Metropolitan League, becoming one of only three first teams playing in Division Two. The following season saw the club moved into Division One, but in 1965 they were admitted to Division One of the Southern League. League restructuring saw them placed in the new Division One North for the 1971–72 season. They were moved into Division One South the following season and finished bottom of the division. Transferred back to Division One North for the 1973–74 season, they finished bottom of the table again. Barry Fry had become Dunstable manager towards the end of the 1973–74 season, and with chairman Keith Cheeseman providing him with blank cheques, Fry attracted several big name players to the club, most notably Jeff Astle and George Best, as well as arranging a friendly match against his former club Manchester United. Although Best only played in two friendly matches and made no competitive appearances for the club, Astle stayed at the club for that season and scored 34 goals as they finished as Division One South runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. However, huge debts caused the club to fold midway through the 1975–76 season; a new club under the name Dunstable was formed to take over their fixtures. Despite finishing eighth in the league, they were demoted to Division One North Dunstable were transferred to Division One South for the 1978–79 season, and the following year league restructuring saw them placed in the Southern Division. They remained in the division until the end of the 1993–94 season, after which they folded. The club was re-established in 1998 and joined Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League. After winning the division in 1999–2000 without losing a match, they were promoted to the Senior Division. The following season saw them finish as Senior Division runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. The club went on to win the Premier Division in 2002–03 and were promoted to Division One North of the Isthmian League. With the formation of the Conference North and South, a fifth-place finish in 2003–04 was enough for Dunstable to be promoted, although they were transferred to the Premier Division of the Southern League. However, they were relegated to the Western Division at the end of the 2004–05 season, which saw them finish in the bottom three. The following season saw them finish in the relegation zone, but the club were reprieved due to FA restructuring and moved to Division One Midlands. However, they were relegated back to the Spartan South Midlands League at the end of the 2008–09 season following a 13-point deduction. In 2012–13 Dunstable won the Spartan South Midlands League without losing a match, as well as winning the league's Challenge Trophy and the Bedfordshire Premier Cup. After promotion to Division One Central of the Southern League, they went on to win the division at the first attempt, as well as the league's Champions Trophy, and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 2017–18 the club finished bottom of the Premier Division and were relegated to Division One Central. The following season saw them finish bottom of Division One Central, resulting in relegation to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League.
