illinois chapter president, 2015-2016 So much to do, so little time…. how can we be coming to the end of 2015 already? Between all of the projects and deadlines, I hope that it has been an enjoyable and rewarding year for all of you. And I hope that you were able to take advantage of the many opportunities to network, learn, and have fun at IIDA events – they are a valuable part of your IIDA membership.

As all of us try to catch our breath and enjoy the holiday season with friends and family, we want you to know that the IIDA Illinois Executive Board has been busy planning lots of events and programs for 2016.

We want to see you at Stitch in February, RED Awards in April, and Leaders Breakfast next October. Please consider entering or sponsoring a mask for Stitch and entering projects in the RED Awards. It’s important to showcase your projects and support our efforts to recognize the great work you do.

In addition to the Signature Events mentioned above, you will have numerous professional development opportunities, including an NCIDQ prep class. In December, we started our monthly email update. This is an effort to cut back on the amount of email blasts that you receive about our chapter programs. Please watch for that so you don’t miss anything.

But we will still be sending you separate email notices about the Signature Events and to share information about products and services available from our wonderful Chapter Partners.

We could not offer all of our programs without our Chapter Partners, so please support them whenever you can.

One of the benefits of being a Chapter Partner is being able to spotlight your products and services to our chapter members. So if you haven’t committed to a chapter Partnership for 2016 yet, please consider doing it now. We value your investment in us and will do everything possible to make it a win/win for all of us.

And finally, I want to thank everyone for their time and efforts in making 2015 a very successful year for our chapter. Have a fabulous holiday and I look forward to seeing you at an IIDA event in 2016.

Greetings from the IIDA Illinois Chapter, We are reaching out to the Illinois design community to encourage project entries for our fourth annual RED Awards. If you are unfamiliar with the RED Awards, you can check out coverage of the 2015 awards on our website: IIDA Illinois 2015 RED Award. All entries will be featured during the reception prior to the Awards ceremony to be held on the evening of Thursday, April 7, 2016 at the Chicago Cultural Center. The evening is truly a celebration of design and the best of the Illinois Design community. Please consider supporting IIDA and the RED Awards as we Recognize Exemplary Design, by submitting one (or more) projects in this year’s RED Awards.

People have a natural resistance to change and even though there are good business reasons for transforming the workplace, often, workers feel vulnerable with the process. Consequently, workplace change management should be executed very carefully and thoughtfully. The goal is to create a well-crafted program that provides support for employees about their new workplace.

Why do we need change management?

Change management helps employees get back to work quickly and effectively and in return reduce costs and minimize productivity loss. People and space represent the two largest portions of a company’s budget and a smooth change management program helps optimize these assets by decreasing costs and retaining high performers. People by nature are adaptable and can adjust to new workplaces whether they like them or not. However, without a well thought out change program, workers may not be as efficient and productive in the new space as in the old. Change management ensures that employees are satisfied and performing to their best capabilities.

How to pursue change management?

It’s best to utilize a third party not connected to the project team that has proven experience managing workplace transformation projects along with a comprehensive understanding of workplace strategy and the design process. No matter how well designed the workplace, the success of the project will ride on the acceptance from the staff. And, a third party with experience in managing change can ultimately facilitate that success.

When done right, a thoughtful workplace change program will align people and place to the desired business outcomes, culture and goals. A successful change management program will make employees feel valued and consequently higher performing.
