A very warm welcome to the first annual LIC Arts Open!

The inspiration for the festival came from an innocuous chat when I mentioned that I had previously been a Festival Director of Camberwell Arts Week in London.

As Karen Dimit, our Festival Chair, and I chatted, I put forth the case for turning our area’s annual Open Studios event into a multi-disciplinary arts festival. We wanted to recognize and promote the huge and talented community of visual artists, but also to give equal respect to the legions of actors, dancers, singers and musicians who make this wonderful ‘hood a creative and inspirational place to live and work. We are now delighted to welcome New York to witness the explosion of incredible talent in Long Island City that is the heart of our festival.

We are very pleased also to have Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer as a co-sponsor whose love and support of the Arts is well known. We have both of Queen’s major film studios, Silvercup and Kaufman Astoria, alongside our two biggest Queens newspapers, The Courier and The Queens Chronicle, as well. Many thanks to Paul Salas and his team as our Official Festival Printers and Big City Graphics who printed our posters, postcards and brochure.

There are so many people to thank when a community like ours comes together that it is always an impossible task, but I must make an honorable mention to my friend and colleague, Karen Dimit, who has gamely taken on the chair of a Festival that is already much larger than was originally envisioned.

As a British actor/director now firmly ensconced in Queens, I couldn’t think of

a better way to return the generosity and support that has been shown to me than by helping to develop a Festival honoring the talented artists of a place I am proud to live and work in.

The show focuses on rarely seen images of abstract expressionist artists Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner at their Southampton, LI home over a weekend in 1953. Images of other creative influencers on the late 20th century aesthetic are also featured.

I moved from Dallas, TX to LIC in August 2001 and in spite of the events of 9/11, I have seen continuous growth in all business segments, arts organizations, art studio buildings and residential developments in this area. To me, word-ofmouth has been the most powerful marketing phenomenon that happened in LIC. The first thing any good dog does in the morning is make sure its owner is awake in time for it to get fed. My owner’s name is Jeffrey

and he makes a mean breakfast. It’s usually something crunchy for me, and something he calls Chai tea for himself. After that we leave the limestone we live in and go for a walk to the park a block away. Some of my friends are usually there as well and we discuss our plans for the day while running around to our heart’s content. Then it’s off to Jeffrey’s gallery for a day of protecting against intruders, sleeping at everyone’s feet, and meeting all of the great smelling people who are there to pet and play with me.

Sometimes people even bring something for me to nibble on! The humans also do something called work, but I still haven’t figured out what that word means. Sometimes we leave and get lunch from Tost Café or go down by the water to walk around the newly constructed promenade at Gantry Park. I have mixed feelings about the promenade because some areas are “no dog zones.” Such discrimination!

After the strenuous day is done, Jeffrey and I close up the gallery, turn off all the lights and make sure all of the art is safe and secure.

If it’s nice out, we like to walk around and explore not only the architecture LIC is already known for, but also the new construction popping up everywhere. Sometimes the construction workers leave pieces of their lunch around for me. Delish! Then it’s off to the dog run for more playing and waiting for Jeffrey to finish talking to all of his friends. When he finally finishes talking, we either head back home or go to his studio.

The studio is fun because there are great people to play with and interesting smells to explore. My personal favorite is the oil paint some people use. I once ended up with a red ring of paint around my nose, which all the people found very entertaining, but I’ve since learned my lesson and have stopped trying to eat it.

By the time we finally get home I’m exhausted from the day’s events.

After an amazing dinner (Jeffrey is a miracle worker with dog food), I head for bed. Jeffrey usually leaves and does who knows what, but I’m perfectly content relaxing at home after another perfect day in the neighborhood.

8:00p $10 Collaborating for the first time at the innaugural LIC Arts Open, Hawkes and Irwin will rock the crowd with a concert featuring improvation and the spontaneous and unique world of eccentric and vintage electronics.

Both composer/musicians are known for their extensive work in animation. 3x Emmy winner Hawkes composes music for several shows including “”Blue’s Clues””. Irwin currently contributes to “”SpongeBob SquarePants”” and “”Adventure Time””. He’s also scoring the HBO series, “”Bored To Death” Outside the world of television, Hawkes can be heard singing and playing trombone and ukeulele with his own group when not backing up artists like Nora Jones and Elvis Costello. Irwin was a founding member of the Ray Beats and 8 Eyed Spy, and played with the B-52’s for 18 years.

When I learned that fellow LIC Art Center resident Richard Mazda (The Secret Theatre) had originated an arts festival in Camberwell, London, I realized I had hit on the perfect

creative storm. And sure enough, once Mazda and I began talking up the idea of the LIC Arts Open, other area folks — musicians, educators, chefs -became intrigued at the thought of pooling their skills, creativity, and resources to create something larger than themselves for

one glorious week in May! As a professional artist whose days are usually full of long hours working in isolation, I had little experience as a community organizer, but the needs and wants of the Open have thrust me into this position where I have the pleasure of connecting with the community.

The week-long celebration is packed with exciting activities in LIC’s updated industrial spaces, lofts, condos and businesses. Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer became our cosponsor and other politicians have given great encouragement.

Queens school children have made fabulous creations for the Queensboro Bridge Art Contest…and the local media has shown enthusiastic support.

Due to the outpouring of enthusiasm from the whole LIC community, the 1st Annual LIC Arts Open has become a larger and more visible event than I could have ever predicted!
