Synergy Study Club: 2017/2018 Program
We are enthusiastic about this year’s program that will largely be centered on developing interdisciplinary treatment plans utilizing orthodontics, dental implants, periodontal tissue manipulation, and advanced restorative concepts in the esthetic area. We will also seek to recommit ourselves toward team building and enhanced intra-office communication with a doctor/staff meeting that will be better focused to our needs as dental professionals. Lastly, we will tackle a new continuing education requirement of dentists and hygienists concerning human trafficking. In total, we will offer over 23 hours of high quality CE in a tranquil, friendly environment that will enhance our relationships, develop friendships, and build comradery amongst our peers and dental neighbors!
Please find below an outline for our 2017-2018 program. As always, we embrace feedback regarding topics, food selections, and venues.

“Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning: A STEP™ Approach”
Drs. James Wooddell and Joseph Passaro
Introduction
James B. Wooddell, D.D.S. and Joseph C. Passaro, D.D.S. graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School, Class of 1981. They have practiced together for over thirty-five years and maintain a practice of Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry in Davidsonville, Maryland. In 2010, Drs. Wooddell and Passaro launched the Chesapeake Dental Education Center where they teach other practitioners how to achieve more efficient and predictable treatment outcomes with greater case acceptance through their unique Systematic Treatment Evaluation Protocol (STEP™).
Drs. Woody Wooddell and Joe Passaro have been in partnership for over three decades and maintain a thriving practice of restorative and esthetic dentistry in Davidsonville, MD.
"Woody" and "Joe" have studied under the best minds in dentistry and have assimilated their vast knowledge into a singular program proven to effectively diagnose the problem, develop an appropriate treatment plan and implement the optimum solution for any restorative or esthetic case.
Woody and Joe are full-time clinicians who have put what they've learned and the techniques they've developed into practice every day. They are effective educators because they have a passion for dentistry and teach from experience.
In this course, Drs. Wooddell and Passaro will teach participants how to apply a Systematic Treatment Evaluation Protocol (STEP™) to any case which enables the practitioner to identify the cause, develop a plan and successfully carry out the treatment. Having a systematic approach eliminates the multiple frustrations of how to diagnose the patient, achieve patient acceptance and execute the treatment. The STEP™ system provides an accurate and easily understood tool to develop treatment plans and communicate to the patient, members of the interdisciplinary team and the dental laboratory.
Objectives * How to use STEP™ (Systematic Treatment Evaluation Protocol) to analyze the patient’s conditions and determine their treatment options.
* The importance of using digital photographs and templates to develop treatment plans and communicate to the patient, members of the interdisciplinary team and the dental laboratory.

“Human Trafficking Identification”
Sheila Ann Meshinski, RN
Sheila Ann Meshinski, RN, has a clinical background primarily in emergency nursing. In the past 15 years, she has also practiced as a forensic nurse. During that time, she took care of assault victims and worked on several criminal cases using forensic principles. Meshinski became interested in human trafficking victims when she attended a conference presented by the FBI on the topic. Shortly after that she joined the human trafficking task force in Lansing as one of the first health care providers. Her knowledge and experience will provide participants with valuable information that will aid in reducing human trafficking occurrences here in Michigan.
The Michigan law banning human trafficking took effect on Aug. 24, 2006, with various provisions strengthening the law occurring over the following years. In 2014, the Training for Medical Professionals provision was adopted requiring most medical professionals (including dentists) to become trained in identifying the signs of human traffic king. This training session meets the Michigan Board of Dentistry’s new licensing requirement — adopted Jan. 6, 2017 — for health care professionals to complete an identification training course.
Learning objectives include:
• Understanding the types and venues of human trafficking in the state of Michigan.
• Identifying victims of human trafficking in health care settings.
• Recognizing the warning signs of human trafficking in health care settings for adults and minors.
• Resources for reporting the suspected victims of human trafficking.

Managing congenitally missing or microdontic lateral incisors presents multiple challenges and requires numerous considerations to achieve an optimal result. Functional and esthetic parameters play key roles in directing treatment protocols. Orthodontics and restorative dentistry are typically incorporated into the treatment plan regardless of the approach chosen to best manage the missing or malformed tooth/teeth. Younger patients typically have greater treatment options than fully mature patients. Treatment times can span many years and retention is not always predictably maintained. The best treatment solutions predictably and conservatively satisfy the functional and esthetic requirements of the patient.
Learning Objectives:
After reading this article, the reader should:
1. Understand the influencing parameters that need to be considered when determining the best course of treatment for a patient with congenitally missing or microdontic lateral incisors.
2. Can be able to list the restorative options that are available to treat tooth agenesis.
3. Understand the importance of space management, retention and relapse when implant supported crowns are included as part of the treatment plan.
