Congratulations to our Chief Reporter Nick Male, who is the new president of the Elstree and Borehamwood Rotary Club. 2016/17

Hertsmere Children’s Centre, Borehamwood Food Bank, Hertsmere Dance and Drama group, 7th Borehamwood Scouts, Hertsmere Community Transport, Herts Air Ambulance, Shenley Cubs, Borehamwood Seniors, Hertsmere Mencap, Toddlers Play area Shenley park and the Borehamwood Defibrillator fund for local schools.

The above eleven good causes, shared a donation pot of £5000. This is the third time we have given £5000 in the last 18 months. It was again enhanced by a substantial cash investment from our publisher’s personal account. One of the nominated charities failed to show up, so their share of the pot was given as an increase to the defibrillator fund. We hope the autumn and winter editions of 2016 will provide an increase to the donation pot.

Sweet memories in store at the Museum

A new exhibition celebrating how Borehamwood used to look when you went Down the Shops in The Village is now underway.

‘Down the Shops’ is open at Elstree and Borehamwood Museum on the top floor of the community hub at 96 Shenley Road, and will run until January 2017.

The exhibition, put together by volunteers, recreates the barbers, chemists, grocers, ironmongers and tobacconists, amongst others, of yesteryear in a handsome and nostalgic display.

Its shop front of bottled sweets and tobacco tins is recreated in the exhibition, as is its tea rooms with china cups and plates.

More information about the museum can be found on the Elstree and Borehamwood Museum website. www.ebw-musuem.co.uk ‘Down The Shops’ is open from Tuesdays to Thursdays from 12pm to 6pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. Admission is free.

Visitors are able to view original shop goods and store-ware including cash tills, grocers’ scales, and chemists’ and electrical goods. There are dozens of surprising exhibits on display such as ration books and shop lettering, and the exhibition incorporates video and audio interviews and period music.

In late August 1944, Horace, my Father said let’s go to the Elstree reservoir for a days’ fishing, but when we arrived there the lake was almost dry. We had to walk almost to the middle of the reservoir before we could start fishing.

Dad said its hopeless, but since we are here to give it a go. At that moment, the klaxon at the engine test houses sounded, warning the workers of an air raid. Immediately we heard a V1 approaching. Dad said get down and hope it keeps going. We had a wonderful view of

this flying bomb travelling at least 400mph and coming straight for us. It was so low, we could see the pale blue underside of the V1. It was right above us, when it turned to its left then straightened up and flew off in the direction of Watford. We stood up and watched it disappear into the distance. When the doodlebug performed that manoeuvre, it should have gone into its dive but it malfunctioned and that probably saved our lives.

Borehamwood Foodbank is very grateful for the generosity of local people in supporting the Foodbank both week to week in many ways and through our Tesco collection. We were donated 1591 Kg of food and we also receive food weekly from the permanent collection box at Tesco. Tesco’s also give us 20% of the value of the food donated and this helps a huge amount . Without this help we would not be able to function so to all our unknown heroes - Thank you. You have changed lives.

By Patrick O’Donnell To help create and foster a feeling of community in our town is for any resident an opportunity and a challenge. Each of us has something of themselves to give. We all have an expertise, a facility built up by our activities over the years, from DIY to cake making through to setting up a newssheet or magazine or organising a fun run.

David, before he came to live in Borehamwood, had set up and run a magazine for profit. When he and his partner, Roma thought of something to give to the community, it was easier for them, than for most of us, to start up a community magazine for charitable purposes.

It took them a few years to get this magazine to pay for itself. When it turned a profit, they were able to donate all that money to local charities.

Since then, their donations have continued and increased to the present level of £10,000 a year, in the last eighteen months by contributions from David’s councillor salary.

Our magazine is going through a rough time at the moment with an ongoing court case.

At this present time David has been obliged to stand down from the magazine as the publisher until this situation has been resolved. Many of the men and women who know him stand by him and feel he is very hard done by.

When these matters are concluded, and David is freed of restraints he will bring this full business into the light of day.

Please keepfaith with this magazine’s power to do good in our community. David and Roma have proved their kindness and generosity and their venture deserves to continue.

Roma died on the 29th of July 2015 and it is over a year now since her departure from this world, we all miss her.

Dave Welsh -an artist in sounD anD vision

-'Anaribmsxyi’Andxbm There is plenty of talent in this town of ours and Dave Welsh is no exception.

A musician since his teens, he has now branched out into a unique combination of singing and animation.

Dave is a Londoner by birth and he cut his teeth in the pub band scene of the sixties.

For many years, he worked for the post office, where he was also a senior union representative.

He always retained his interest in music and his other great love was drawing.

Over the years, he developed a fascination with animation and wanted to explore ways of combining these two media.

Now, Dave has worked very hard and produced a high - quality CD of self-penned material.

Try-a-Train day at Elstree & Borehamwood station James Gillett, manager of our local station and Luton station manager, Joe Healy welcomed the members of the DROPIN96 (DR96) on a Monday morning in May, and again on a Wednesday morning in July, the Borehamwood Mencap folks and their carers on their ‘Try a Train’ days.

The aim of ‘Try a Train’ day is to encourage groups of people who may currently assume that train travel is too complicated and challenging for them, to overcome their fears of train travel, and help them be more independent.

Thameslink arranged free return travel for each group from Elstree & Borehamwood station to London St Pancras International.

This reflects his many moods and has been heard by audiences at several local events. In this way, Dave, who is very generous with his various talents, has helped to raise much-needed funds for Herts. Air Ambulance.

Now, Dave ‘s ambition is to write and produce a one - man show. In this production, he will sing and play his guitar to his own animation showing on the screen.

This will be the culmination of a real labour of love from this man of many parts.

Coming to a screen near you, it will be an evening not to be missed!

Joe and James were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them to ensure everyone had an informative and enjoyable day.

They provided information and a practical demonstration on purchasing the best priced ticket for their journey, on how to use the automatic ticket gates, get their tickets checked and board the train. Both groups listened for train announcements, and learned more about how to ask for help on using the lifts and ramps and looking after their own safety. On the way they took part in entertainments and refreshments and on arrival were given a tour of St Pancras International and King’s Cross next door.

100 Y e ars of Girl Gui din g in t h e U K The Senior Section of Girlguiding UK celebrates its 100 year anniversary in 2016. Radlett District (which incorporates Aldenham and Shenley) is very proud to have Rangers and Young Leaders who continue to enjoy their own programme, whilst often supporting other units’ Young Leaders.

In the summer of 2015, after lots of planning, fundraising and preparations, a group of sixteen Guide and Senior Section members plus three leaders from Radlett District finally boarded the plane for a truly unforgettable experience at Our Chalet, WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) World Centre in Adelboden, Switzerland. The whole group had an amazing time. Everyone challenged themselves physically, highlights being mountain hikes, white water rafting, gorge abseiling, rock climbing and high ropes courses. Mental challenges involved further learning about the work of WAGGGS through their Free Being Me and Stop the Violence campaigns. Cultural experiences were gained by the group immersing themselves both in the Swiss culture (with the vast majority of the group completing the ‘Our Chalet Challenge’ badge which tested us on many aspects of our week’s learning, as well as requiring that a personal challenge be met by each member), and by meeting fellow guides from many places around the world. Some of the things the girls said about their experiences are: • “I learnt that I can do anything if I put my mind to it…… and that we are only a small group in a worldwide organisation and how we do some things differently but so many are the same.”

On their return from Our Chalet, some of the Guides moved up to join the Senior Section. We currently have three girls working towards their Queen’s Guides Awards, two of whom are also Peer Educators. Three members have gained Senior Section permits which allow them to safely lead peers on residential events, and two others have taken permits and eagerly await their results! Five of our members are also Young Leaders, supporting Rainbows, Brownies and Guides in their weekly meetings and activities.

Rangers have enjoyed scuba diving, self defence instruction and power-hooping recently, as well as masterchef evenings, debates, craft, drop hikes, pioneering and so much more. The girls and their leaders have supported local village fairs, fetes, apple days, and Christmas tree festivals. They are looking forward to some fantastic and spectacular events which await them in this centenary year, starting with the opening event at Alexandra Palace, where they have a huge list of new experiences awaiting them!

The £500 grant which was so kindly donated

by Tried and Trusted will go a long way to supporting the Rangers with their Centenary celebrations. We hope that they will continue to be encouraged and motivated to achieve their potential, and will continue to serve others in their local communities in an attempt to ‘give back’ some of what they have been ‘given’.

HAYFEVER - AN INCREASING PROBLEM?

Hayfever season has started early again this year. Already, patients are trickling into the pharmacy with symptoms and requests for advice. Hayfever is undoubtedly on the increase having more-or-less trebled during the last 25-years. The cause of the increase remains controversial, but is generally assumed to be environmental: it may be our good friend the house dust mite, who thrives in modern homes which, being warm, moist and full of soft furnishings, provide the ideal environment.

Another factor could be increasing atmospheric pollution. However, the Clean Air acts of 1956 and 1968 actually reduced pollution, belying this explanation. Maybe there’s a general increase in our sensitivity to allergens. Current estimates are that up to 15% of us suffer from allergic rhinitis with children (10%) and adolescents (20%) suffering most.

BUT IS IT HAyFEvER? Dripping nose? Red watery eyes and a dry itchy throat? Have you had one too many late nights, is it a summer cold or could it be hay fever? Many millions of people misdiagnose their hayfever symptoms, or simply suffer in silence. So whatever your symptoms drag them along to your local pharmacy for some soothing advice!

HAyFEvER? Strangely enough, it isn’t a fever – and it isn’t caused by hay! In fact the cause is pollen.

But there are three pollen seasons, trees in spring, grass through the summer and some plants and even fungi in the autumn. So some poor souls, who suffer from all three, experience symptoms all the way from Spring to Autumn.

SELF-HELP: Wear sunglasses, avoid country walks at peak season and ask someone else to mow the lawn! Keep car windows closed, and close house windows at night. People suffer more at night because pollen rises with the warm air by day, and descends as the air cools at night……… so if you sleep with your windows open you are inviting the pollen in!

REMEDy THE SITUATION: Ask your local pharmacist for help. They will tailor the treatment specifically for you. There is a range of remedies, including herbal treatments and even vitamin supplements that may be helpful in some circumstances.

WORRIED ABOUT DROWSINESS? There are many effective non-drowsy antihistamines these days and pharmacies stock and sell large money-saving packs. For more severe symptoms there are nasal sprays and eye drops of various sorts. But beware: often the active ingredients overlap so we take particular care for those on prescribed medication, the very young and pregnant ladies!

AND FINALLy: According to NHS estimates, up to 1 in 3 GP appointments could be handled perfectly safely in a pharmacy, thereby freeing up GPs to spend time with those who really need their help. Hayfever is a perfect example.

Diabetic Keto Acidosis (DKA) DKA is a life threatening condition suffered usually by those with Type 1 Diabetes but can also affect Type 2 patients.

It occurs because there is insufficient insulin to transfer the glucose (sugar) in the blood into the cells (for use as a fuel for our daily activities).

Thus, the cells have low sugar and the bloodstream has high sugar, the body responds to this situation by activating another hormone Glucagon, to release even more sugar from the fatty acid stores in the liver.

The breakdown of the fat releases ketones, which, added to the high sugar, causes Diabetic keto acidosis.

The patient usually presents as severely unwell, tired, dehydrated, passing lots of urine, thirsty with ketones in the urine and raised blood sugars. In severe cases when not managed in good time (he) presents in a comatose state.

It can lead to death if not treated early.

Please attend your NHS free health checks for Diabetes when alerted to do so, or if you feel unwell.

Shenley Park Trust Fun Day Aug 2016 ‘We are a small group of local mums raising money, on behalf of The Shenley Park Trust, for a much needed toddler play area next to Shenley Tea Rooms. We have already had huge community support with over 500 members following us and contributing ideas on our Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/groups/855049127938773/ Further to this we have been pledged monies from the local councillors, the Parish Council and local businesses.

We are organising a family fun day event on Sunday 21st August at Shenley Chapel from 2pm-5pm, to raise as much money as possible.

The community can purchase early bird entrance tickets as well as raffle tickets from Shenley Estates, our main sponsor, prior to the event.

Michael’s story is unique in itself.

Howard Ash, a Principal Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, along with his brother-in-law Spencer Richman, a dentist in north Watford, donned lycra and cycled 180 miles from Paris to London on a tandem bicycle to raise money for Guts In Motion or “GIM” the weekend of 8 - 10 July 2016.

GIM is a charity which funds money for Crohns and Colitis in childhood. It was founded by a Radlett resident, Michael Seres, to help fund much needed research into Crohns and Colitis

Along with the bike ride, the charity also encouraged people to do a 10 mile walk from Westminster to Wimbledon, with all riders and walkers, arriving in the park in South Wimbledon at 3.30pm.

Howard and his wife Justine live in Shenley, Hertfordshire with their 2 children Millie (9) and Nathan (almost 7) and the kids attend a local school.

So far Howard and his brother-in-law have raised over £1,350. The last P2L ride held in 2014 raised over £105,000 for the charity all in all. www.guts-in-motion.com 37

CUisiNe ColUMN Lets talk about a healthy breakfast snack today for everyone from a one year old to an adult which everyone can enjoy.

Upma is a common Breakfast dish, cooked as a thick porridge from dry roasted semolina.

Ingredients 1. 1 cup semolina 2. Cooking oil 1 tbsp.

3. Mustard seeds half tsp.

4. Green chillies optional 5. 1 medium chopped onion 6. Salt to taste 7. Boiled Vegetables peas carrots half cup 8. Lemon juice 2 tsp 9. Water Method 1. Roast semolina in a wok until it just begins to turn brown, and then keep it aside.

2. In a large pan/wok heat the oil. Add mustard seeds and wait for them to sputter.

Then add green chillies and chopped onion and fry until onion turns golden brown.

3. Add boiled vegetables and salt.

4. Add roasted semolina and mix.

5. Turn down the heat and add about 3 cups of water and mix quickly to avoid lumps.

6. Once all the water is absorbed by semolina add lemon juice and mix.

7. Upma is ready to be served, garnish it with chopped Cilantro (Coriander)Leaves.
