All of the Parade of Homes™ builders and most of the subcontractors and material suppliers are members of the Home Builders Association. While you are touring the Parade homes, pick up an HBA Homeowners Jennifer Kelly Resource Guide containing a complete list of all our members. Keep it handy for your future homebuilding or remodeling needs. While the Parade of Homes™ lasts only five days, the Parade committee spends nearly a year preparing for it. I want to thank Chairperson Denise Warner (Colonial Life) and the rest of the committee for the enormous amount of time and effort they have given to make this a successful event. A special thanks to the following for their important role in this year’s Parade of Homes™: • All our participating builders and their families • Parade of Homes™ premier sponsor: Banner Bank • Parade of Homes media sponsors: Tri-City Herald, KNDU Right Now and 98.3 The Key • Circle K for selling tickets • You, the public for your continued support and attendance helping this tradition grow and prosper as one of the most popular Tri-Cities events! Take your time while touring the Parade homes. Ask questions of the builders and sales professionals who are on hand at each site. Remember, a new home is a sound investment and there is no better time to buy a new home than today!

the Seasons HOW TO CREATE STUNNING ‘PORCHSCAPES’ FOR THE FALL AND WINTER BY JULIA HASKINS CTW FEATURES

O

ne of the most charming sights in the neighborhood during the fall and winter months is a porch bedecked with seasonal cheer. While these decorations don’t stay up very long, fall- and winter-inspired accents are a great way to cherish the holidays and the spirit of the seasons. Follow these tips to show off your porch design prowess throughout the fall and winter.

EMBRACE THE OFFBEAT

When decorating around a season, it’s easy to fall back on go-to holiday symbols: Glowing jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween, overflowing cornucopias for Thanksgiving and red and green ornaments for Christmas. While there’s nothing wrong with these time-honored emblems, there’s ample opportunity to stretch the limits of traditional fall and winter decor. Don’t feel like you have to limit yourself to a certain design scheme. Marlaina Teich of Marlaina Teich Designs suggests using unexpected color palettes and materials to dress up your porch. That way, you can still decorate your porch so that it evokes seasonal elements without going overboard. Branch out a little –spray paint a pumpkin metallic gold or use sleek modern pottery for poinsettias. “You can put the full-sized reindeer

on your porch, but if they’re sleek white it’s cool,” says Teich.

KICK THE KITSCH

Seasonal decorating often turns extravagant when porches are involved. Homeowners can get a little decorating-obsessed when showing off all their seasonal adornments. A giant inflatable Santa may be fun for the neighborhood kids, but it doesn’t have a place on an elegantly decorated porch. Trade the junky stuff for reclaimed furniture, antique lanterns and other grown-up pieces that would be appropriate throughout the year. And the less kitschy stuff you purchase, the more money you can put toward better products for your porch, says Sara Jenkins-Sutton, vice president of Topiarus. “Be careful what you buy,” she says. “A lot of holiday decor is made with inexpensive materials and can fall apart fast. We recommend avoiding anything that is inflatable Use winter greenery in your porch decor or plastic, no matter how colorful and fun it looks. We would much rather see consumers invest in quality and purchase less.” Step back from your porch and take in the overall scene. If it’s too overwhelming, just remove or rearrange a few pieces to create some balance. The “less is more” mantra definitely applies in this situation.

CREATE A HOMEY FEEL

Spread holiday spirit with your porch

As the year winds down, people become a little more nostalgic, craving the comforts of home. It’s no wonder why – November and December in particular are months that remind people of good times spent with close friends and family. Decorate your porch with these feelings of warmth and cheer in mind. Give visitors to your home a friendly welcome with a homemade wreath. One simple option is to wrap twigs or leaves with a delicate piece of ribbon, suggests Dawn Newkirk, director of fashion merchandising for Gorman’s Home Furnishings & Interior Design. Or,

you can shake up the traditional pine cone-and-evergreen wreath with materials like brightly colored feathers, Teich says. Don’t stop at the door – decorate your porch as if it were another room in your home. All you have to do is bring the outside in, says Kate Campbell of HGTV’s “Decked Out” and “Deck Wars.” Simply incorporate decorative outdoor rugs and weather-resistant cushions, pillows and throw blankets into the seating area of your porch. No hammock or swing to lounge in? No problem, says Newkirk. Simply pick up some weathered wooden chairs from an antique or thrift store for an instantly cozy feel. “One of my favorite things to do with an outdoor space is to create a ‘comfort zone,’ such as a hammock area or a conversation nook with built-in lounges – somewhere cozy with lots of pillows and blankets where you can curl up with a good book or a good friend, and stay Continued on page 31

Continued from page 29 warm in chillier temperatures,” says Campbell. Reclaimed pieces like baskets made from corrugated tin or wooden slats also fit into this rustic, homey setting. Fill the baskets with birch logs, pinecones and other items that speak to the fall and winter seasons.

GO NATURAL

Even though spring and summer are most often associated with fresh greenery, there’s a lot to love about the flora and fauna of the cooler months. “In September and October, I love to stick to the classic autumn flowers: Chrysanthemums, daisies, dahlias and mums, says Campbell. “Come the colder months, pick low maintenance flowers that bloom in the winter including roses, pansies or carnations or evergreens such as cypress or English boxwood.” A gardening supply store will have what you need, but the fall and winter months are a great time to take advantage of all the nature in your own neighborhood. Newkirk recommends getting the whole family involved in collecting items to display on your porch. Pick up small twigs, leaves and other natural mementos on a family hike. Afterwards, use clothespins to string up the pieces along

with little notes that describe what you and your family love about the season. If you’d rather show off your nature collection on a tabletop, layer your finds in large glass vases or closed containers, she suggests. You can also fill window boxes with seasonal goods like gourds instead of flowers. For a finishing touch with a modern twist, Teich recommends painting just the tips of branches or pinecones in dazzling colors like gold and silver. Display these natural ornaments in a bowl or arrange them on the surface of a small table. © CTW Features

In developing these turn-by-turn directions, careful consideration was taken to minimize the total number of miles driven, and to eliminate as many cross-traffic turns as possible, making the route as safe and gas-efficient as possible. It’s Curtains for You How to choose and hang the perfect curtains for your home

BY ERIN CHAN DING CTW FEATURES

arth tones. Linens. Neutrals. Patterns. Nature-inspired. Stripes. Burgundy. Blues. Browns. And on and on. The choices for curtains, draperies and window treatments may seem overwhelming, but don’t feel intimated by the choices. Get excited! Choosing the right curtains can add sparkle, grace and vibrancy to a room. Danielle Kerr, owner of Danielle B. Interiors in suburban Chicago, says window treatments often make rooms feel complete. “The nice thing about window treatments, curtains and draperies is that whatever style you choose, whether it’s contemporary, transitional, traditional, draperies can fit into any design style,” Kerr says. “Pattern, texture and color - all of those things 42

are important. It’s like jewelry for the room. It’s one of those things that when you go into a room, if they’re not there, it looks like something’s missing. Something needs to finish off that window.” Kerrie Kelly, an interior designer and the owner of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab in Sacramento, says “a window can be a fantastic focal point in a room and adding a great curtain enhances the beauty.” But where to begin? First, get over the fear. Trust yourself, says Kerr. “If you look at something, you know in your gut if you like it or not, so go ahead and trust it.” And don’t be afraid to try something a little nontraditional like bold colors or patterns, she adds. “People are so fearful of pattern and color,” Kerr says. “I’m a big fan and encourager of mixing design styles.

I don’t recommend that people just stick to one design. It’s boring. It’s typical. I’m trying to get people to get out of their comfort zone a little bit, at least in their accents. A traditional room can add a little pop to it with some awesome draperies that make it unique. I think that’s the key to successful design.” For inspiration, Kerr says to look to globally inspired fabrics. Several of those pieces have cozier looks that translate well as we approach the cooler fall and winter months. “I recommend trying something tribal, Moroccan, anything that’s just an around-the-world sort of look,” she says. “Look at adding color, pattern and texture, like really knotty, knitted, chunky fabrics.” If you live in a more temperate area, Kelly suggests exploring linens. “Linen is one of our go-to fabrics, as it has a comfortable, California vibe,” she says. “With the large amount of linen weaves and colors to select from, it’s a very versatile option.” Cotton curtains can also give a room an airier feel while dressier fabrics, like silks and velvets, work well in cooler metropolitan areas. For homeowners who would like more texture of heft, she recommends combining materials. ““We are also big fans of organic materials such as woven wood or bamboo shades, being layered under a drape,” she says. Certain fabrics can also help keep the heat in the house during the winter chill. Thermal curtains, for example, are typically constructed of two or three layers of wool or polyester and have an acrylic foam or layer of aluminum to protect against damage from ultraviolet rays. Blackout drapes or liner, which will block out sunlight (a bonus if you have Continued on page 45 Pa ra d e of Homes ™ • 2016

Continued from page 42 a fussy baby who won’t fall asleep) also help keep in the heat. Kerr says she often picks up liner that runs an affordable $5 to $10 a yard at a craft or hobby store and takes it to a tailor to sew into the curtains. With so many different treatment options, it can be tough to make a commitment. No one wants to buy a piece of décor only to get it home and realize it doesn’t mesh with the rest of the room. Luckily, many companies are willing to send swatches so you can play with how the design looks in a certain space before investing. Technology has also given us tools to help us envision how rooms will look. Kerr recommends using Olioboard, which allows users to design 3-D rooms. Hiring a designer to help you create custom drapery is a great way to guarantee you get a look you’ll love that actually last, though it can be expensive, sometimes as much as a few thousand dollars per window. “You gotta be sure because custom is not cheap,” Kerr says. While buying off the rack may not give you a one-of-akind style, it is a much more economical option. Plus, it gives you the freedom to try something totally out-of-thebox. So, if you hate it in a few months or just want something different, you don’t have to feel guilty about having spent a bunch of money. “I’m not going to lie,” Kerr says. “Depending on if it’s really short term, and I want to pop this room with some orange, I might just go to HomeGoods or T.J. Maxx and

just grab those curtains off the rack. You get some fun and color, and next year you don’t feel bad about taking down those $29.99 curtains.” Kerr also cites Pottery Barn and West Elm as stores that carry quality curtains whose designs can be trusted. You can also check out semi-custom online ordering, which usually costs well below premium priced custom draperies. Kerr specifically recommends Loom Décor, which offers free samples, shipping and returns. It also has a chat option and can virtually pair you with a stylist for assistance. © CTW Features

Pet-corate Your Space

omes are typically designed and built around one animal at the top of the food chain: the homo sapien. So that usually means that our feline and canine companions get the short end of the stick when it comes to interior accommodations, architectural layout, room flow and pet-friendly furniture and décor. But with the right planning and know-how, dog and cat owners can transform designated living spaces into doggone purr-fect areas for four-legged family members to enjoy too. Case in point: Rick Wiggins chose to equip the living 48

room in his previous home in Ohio with feline accoutrement and a carpeted cat staircase connected to a catwalk near the ceiling. He took all of this with him when he moved to Orange, California. “We also turned the covered patio off the back our house into a ‘catio,’ and made a custom wooden door insert for the sliding glass door that connects the house to the catio so that cats can come and go as they please,” says Wiggins, owner of four cats. “Most of these changes are inexpensive to build but can add a whole new dimension to your pet’s life.” Meanwhile, Janine Acquafredda, a Brooklyn, New Yorkbased owner of a French Mastiff named Chester, converted her under-stair storage closet into a Continued on page 50 Pa ra d e of Homes ™ • 2016

She also installed an extra-long center island in the kitchen that houses Chester’s food and water bowls. “The dog cave serves as a nice retreat for Chester. It’s a quiet place if things get too busy for him,” she says. DeAnna Radaj, owner of DeAnna on Design in Tampa, Florida, says these are great examples of “pet-corating”– a design approach in which elements are adapted within your living space to make it more comfortable and safe for your pets, but without detracting from human usability or aesthetics. “Pet-corating can be as simple as incorporating pet pictures in display cabinets or on your walls,” Radaj says. “Or it can involve more extensive remodeling projects like installing tile or stone flooring surfaces for easier cleaning, building a ramp for dogs with limited mobility, incorporating litter boxes into vanities or cabinets and implementing your pet’s fur color into your room’s color scheme.” Warren Sheets, CEO of Warren Sheets Design in San Francisco, says other pet-corating project examples include creating a special pet hideaway within a breakfast nook, obscuring messy pet dishes in a low pullout drawer in your kitchen and incorporating new furniture with stain-resistant upholstery. “We get a lot of requests from our clients for a pet station in the laundry room, which includes a raised washing station using easy-to-clean and non-skid mosaic tile, storage space

Whatever pet-corating project you tackle, “make sure it is in harmony with the overall aesthetic of your space so that any elements dedicated to your pets are organically a part of your home,” Sheets says. For best results, consider hiring a designer instead of doing it all yourself. “A designer can help establish project parameters, schedule and budget.

They will have access to materials and furnishings that others may not have,” says Radaj, who adds that impact on your home’s resale value needs to be considered carefully before embarking on a pet-corating plan. “A professional can suggest the most efficient way to accomplish the project safely and accurately, so that a cat tree won’t collapse a ceiling, for example, and to ensure that your project harmonizes with other rooms too.” © CTW Features

The Fix-It List: By Erik J. Martin

W

ith the onset of cooler weather, many homeowners take careful steps to hibernate the summer grill, put away the patio furniture and head indoors to dwell in comfortable warmth before Old Man Winter descends upon their homes. But too often, they don’t take the necessary precautions to maintain and safeguard their residences from the cruel elements that can wreak havoc on a home between now and springtime, say experts. “When homeowners fail to prepare for the colder fall and winter months, they’re putting their homes at risk for energy loss and severe damage like burst pipes, roof and basement leaks and house fires,” says Matt Kaulig, owner of LeafFilter, a Hudson, Ohiobased gutter protection provider. “Over time, this sort of neglect will 52

compound into bigger problems. You could be looking at thousands of dollars in damage, a large homeowners insurance claim and ruined, irreplaceable possessions as a result.” A recent national survey from Erie Insurance, conducted by Harris Poll, indicates that many Americans are negligent and inattentive when it comes to fall and winter home upkeep. While 62 percent of homeowner respondents graded themselves an “A” or “B” for their personal home maintenance habits, the poll reveals that: • 23 percent never inspect their roof or have it inspected unless there’s a problem • only 36 percent have their furnaces inspected and cleaned at least annually • 24 percent never maintain their gutters and downspouts • only 21 percent clean their clothes dryer ducts unless an issue arises • 60 percent don’t have any money

saved in a home maintenance fund, despite the recommendation that $2,000 to $6,000 should be reserved annually for these expenses for a $200,000 home. Joe Vahey, vice president and product manager for Erie Insurance in Erie, Pennsylvania, is particularly concerned about the latter finding. “While many experts encourage homeowners to set aside one to three percent of the purchase price of their homes each year for ongoing maintenance, a majority of homeowners aren’t doing that. This leaves them at risk for major financial problems in the event of needed repairs,” says Vahey. Additionally, “nearly a third of homeowners either mistakenly believe their insurance will pay for damage that occurs to their roof over time,” he says. “Homeowners insurance covers repairs needed if something causes Continued on page 54 Pa ra d e of Homes ™ • 2016

8. Ensure your fireplace is up to snuff

Continued from page 52 sudden damage, such as a tree falling on it, but it doesn’t provide coverage for regular maintenance projects and wear and tear.” For these reasons, it’s crucial to get a head start on the changing seasons and bolster your property to withstand harsh weather, lower your utility bills and prolong the lifespan of your house’s components. “Your home is made of materials that can shift and move in cold temperatures,” says Kevin Gaul, engineering manager with Iowa-based Pella Corporation, makers of windows and doors. “Preparing your home now can help reduce air leakage, increase your energy efficiency and potentially save you money on heating costs.” Ready to get your fall upkeep fix? Follow this checklist of suggested steps:

1. Carefully survey the grounds Pruning your trees will prevent dead, branches caked with snow and ice from collapsing onto your property or loved ones. Rake and remove all dead leaves and vegetation promptly to prevent slips and falls. Apply a fall fertilizer or winterizer to protect and nourish your lawn.

2. Inspect your home’s exterior Look for red flags like foundation cracks, holes or damage to the siding, damage to fascia boards and soffits and loose roof shingles. If you find an issue, get it resolved by a professional right away. “Any exterior openings or cracks are particularly vulnerable to leaks over winter. They’re also key targets for small animals like raccoons, squirrels and mice that can chew through ceilings, walls and wiring,” says Michael Theriault, founder of The Crack Doctor, a waterproofing vendor in Mississauga, Ontario.

3. Clear debris from gutters Failing to do so can result in dangerous icicle buildups and snow and ice piling up above your gutters, causing water damage to your roof and walls. 54

Hire a professional to clean your chimney and inspect and correct any leaks, cracks and chimney cap problems. Be sure to clean out the ash from your fireplace after every fire.

6. Improve your energy efficiency

Clean out your gutters to prevent dangerous ice and snow buildups

4. Aim for a tight seal around windows and doors “Reattach or replace loose or worn weatherstripping, which can let cold air in, and reseal caulk around windows and doors that have been exposed to severe weather or extreme sunlight,” recommends Gaul.

5. Install storm windows and doors These add an extra layer of protection and help reduce air leakage. Consider replacing older doors and windows with energy-efficient double- or triple-pane glass windows and new durable fiberglass doors.

6. Protect your pipes “When household pipes freeze, water doesn’t flow and it’s likely that a burst can happen, resulting in a flooded basement or serious water damage to your foundation,” says Doyle James, brand president of Mr. Rooter Plumbing in Waco, Texas. Check crawl spaces, attics, basements, garages and nooks for exposed pipes, and cover them with pipe wrap insulation. Also disconnect, drain and store away any outdoor hoses.

7. Get Your Furnace and water heater professionally inspected The last thing you want during the long, cold winter months is to have your furnace or water heater go out. A professional will be able to identify and fix any problems before this happens.

Here are a few simple changes to make this season: change your furnace filter at recommended intervals, install a programmable thermostat, turn down your water heat to 120 degrees, install pre-cut foam gaskets (available at home improvement stores) behind electric wall plug plates and light switch plates to prevent air leaks, and run your ceiling fans in reverse. “Many ceiling fans come with a handy switch that reverses the direction of the blades,” notes J.B. Sassano, president of Mr. Handyman, an Ann Arbor, Michigan-based home maintenance service provider. “Warm air pooled near the ceiling is circulated back into your living space, cutting heating costs by as much as 10 percent.”

10. Be Prepared for an emergency You should have at least one of the following on every level of your home: a carbon monoxide detector, smoke detector and fire extinguisher. Install fresh batteries, test that the device works properly and replace any old or defective units. Lastly, know your limits as a doit-yourselfer. While a careful and experienced homeowner armed with the right tools can accomplish many of these tasks, it’s often safer and smarter to enlist an expert. “Things like cleaning your gutters, inspecting and cleaning your fireplace and removing dead branches from your trees pose significant safety hazards that professionals are trained to avoid,” says Kaulig. © CTW Features

In April 2011, Megan and Jason, using their combined 30 years of restaurant experience, opened “Frost Me Sweet Bakery & Bistro”. It has been a perfect marriage of Megan’s love for art and cake, combined with Jason’s passion for fresh, delicious food. FMS is an eclectic mixture of hand-crafted food & desserts paired with a great local beer & wine menu. FMS sources locally as much as possible, uses organic and raw product, changing their menu seasonally to do so.

Restaurant: Doggie Style Gourmet Years as Chef: 10+ Combined Cuisine Style: American Phone: (509) 366-7034 Website: facebook.com/doggiestylegourmet Bio: Tanner and Andrew cooked together for about three years at Meadow Springs Country Club. Prior to that, Andrew went to Culinary School at Walla Walla Community College. Tanner started his cooking career in North Carolina (Morrisville). His style is classic southern food with French influence and his favorite meal to cook is breakfast/French toast. After leaving the Country Club, the two talked tirelessly about trying to get a food truck of some sort to run together. One day, out of the blue, Tanner broke the news that he had purchased a hot dog cart. Having their backgrounds in more upscale cooking, they set out to mix up an old American classic with their gourmet cooking skills and the type of food that they enjoy cooking. That’s where the concept of the gourmet dogs came from. Hot dogs are an American favorite, but Tanner and Andrew wanted to set themselves apart and really use their unique skill sets. From the attentiongrabbing name, to growing some of their ingredients themselves, to using local vendors for their products; they serve up hot dogs like you’ve never had before.

Checklist for Finding and Hiring a Builder or Remodeler National Association of Home Builders Doing your homework will help you have a more successful building or remodeling experience. Use this checklist to help you select a home builder or home remodeler to work on or build your home.

 Contact your local home builders association for the names of member builders and remodelers: www.nahb.org/findanhba. You can also ask family, friends or coworkers for recommendations.  Make sure the builder or home remodeler has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.Find out how long they have been in the building business. It usually takes 3 to 5 years to establish a financially sound business. You want to make sure they will be around after the construction is complete to service any warranties.  Check out the company’s rating and if there have been any complaints filed with your local Better Business Bureau: www.bbb.org.  Make sure the builder/remodeler has sufficient workers compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any construction-related accidents on your premises.  Ask the builder/remodeler to provide you with names of previous customers. If they won’t, beware. If they do, ask the customers if they

would hire the builder/remodeler again.

 Ask if you can see the builder/remodelers work, both completed and in progress. Check for quality of workmanship and materials.  Do you feel you can easily communicate with the builder/remodeler? Remember you will be in close contact with them throughout the construction process and afterward as you live in your new home.  Make sure the builder/remodeler provides you with a complete and clearly written contract. The contract will benefit both of you. If you are having a new home built, get and review a copy of the home warranty and homeowner manual as well.  Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the builder/remodeler is unable to pay for the materials and labor as the project proceeds, this may indicate a potential problem. Keep in mind that less expensive does not necessarily mean better!  Verify that your remodeler is an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Renovator if you are planning work in a pre-1978 home that will disturb more than six square feet of painted surfaces inside the home or 20 square feet on the exterior of the home.

Eight years later, he went to work at Meadow Springs Country Club. There, Adam was exposed to and contributed to a higher level of quality, where great ideas and fresh food meet artistic taste. Training under two of the best chefs in the Tri-Cities, Adam learned to translate excellent culinary ideas onto the plate. Now, after being with Monterosso’s Italian Restaurant for over 4 years, Chef Adam works with a great deal of energy and has an absolute love for his profession. Customers have been known to characterize him as “while humble in nature, there is no mistaking Adam’s passion and attention to quality food and standards.” Chef Adam is a great match for the train car’s unique and unforgettable dining experience. Adam has used his talents and his creativity to not only produce some of the best Italian food in the Tri-Cities, but has also leveraged his craft and prestige to making events such as Wine Dinners, Special Holiday Dinners, Bi-weekly Complimentary Wine Tastings and Wine and Appetizer Pairings something fun for our guests who say, “They just keep getting better and better.” A new addition to our events that Adam has personally come up with is his very own cooking class hosted at the train where he teaches his secrets to creating great food followed by a dinner that incorporates what has been learned in the class.

Restaurant: The Vine @ Cameo Heights Cuisine Style: New American Phone: 509.394.0211 Address: 1072 Oasis Rd, Touchet Website: www.cameoheightsmansion.com Bio: Rarely can one find on-site restaurants in Bed and Breakfasts— even rarer when they actually have good food. But fortunately for us and our guests, we have, what one guest recently characterized, a restaurant with a chef who is “overqualified”. Whatever else that may mean, the salient fact is that if you are anywhere close to Walla Walla, Tri-Cities, or Hermiston and you are not eating at The Vine, you are missing out on an epicurean experience like none else. Dinner at The Vine is a dining adventure that is unique. Our cuisine’s premier offering is a seven course prix-fixe dinner with wine pairings from a featured local winery each month. The on-line version of The Vine Dinner Sample Menu is called a sample menu because it changes each month and even from day to day depending upon what is seasonal, fresh, and of the best quality available. Since we have an open kitchen and Chef Carlson personally prepares and serves each course on the menu, every table is a Chef’s Table. Quoting a customer review: “The best restaurant we have tried in all of the Walla Walla Valley and maybe anywhere.”
