Promises of God, Week 5, Tricia Note Why it was to our advantage the Jesus left and sent the Holy Spirit John 16:7 - It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. Why would it be to our advantage that Jesus would go away? So that the Holy Spirit would come to us. If Jesus did not go away, the Holy Spirit would not come. Why was it so important for the Holy Spirit to come? In a broad and obvious sense, so that Jesus, who was limited by the con nes of the esh at the time, could be inside of all of us. There would be no limit to the number people that could be reached, and no limit to the relationship that we could experience in Him. Because Acts 2:39 - This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God. But there is another reason that Jesus would need to leave in order to send the Holy Spirit to us. In that same chapter of Acts, during Peter’s explanation of the phenomena that the people were witnessing at Pentecost, he said Acts 2:33 - Therefore [Jesus] being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, [Jesus received the promise for us - very important] He poured out this which you now see and hear… The right hand is the place of exaltation. But’s it’s very important what came BEFORE that exaltation - Hebrews 1:3 having purged our sins He sat down at the RIGHT HAND of the Majesty on high!; Hebrews 10:12 - After He had offered one sacri ce for sins forever - the sacri ce of Himself - He sat down at the RIGHT HAND of God Let’s go back to the time that Jesus ascended to the Father [not from the Mount of Olives but] right after the resurrection. to the moment when Mary Magdalene realized that Jesus wasn’t the gardener. It was when He called her name, “Mary. John 20:17 - Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, [literally “do no touch Me”] for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father … He was on His way to sprinkle His blood on the Mercy Seat in heaven, and He stopped because of her tears. Why was it important for her not to touch Him (or receive Him)? It was because He was going to the Father to be the rstfruit for us 1 Corinthians 15:20 - But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the rstfruits Mary couldn’t be the rst to receive Jesus. His Father had to be the rst one to receive Him. And then God would be able to receive all of us Romans 11:16 - For if the branches

In the resurrection God demonstrated His acceptance and pleasure in what Jesus accomplished in removing our sins. If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead and didn’t go ahead of us to sprinkle His blood on the Mercy Seat, we would have no assurance that He took away our sins. 1 Corinthians 15:17 - And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! But the opposite is also true: if Christ HAS risen, then we are no longer in our sins, and we are holy! When Jesus completed the work for our redemption, He received the Promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father for us. After His resurrection and ascension to sprinkle the blood, He reappeared to His disciples and then 500 others. After 40 days of giving indisputable proofs of His resurrection, He told them to wait for the Promise of the Father
