When the LA Marathon started in 1986, your Brod Edgar “Egay” Ninofranco saw an article in the LA Times asking the community for volunteers to support the event. He signed up and was assigned as the coCaptain of Mile 20 Water Station located in front of the Musician’s Union building along Vine Street between Melrose & Willoughby Blvd. Mercedes Benz was the very first primary and title sponsor, of which awarded the prize money to both men & women winners. Arrowhead, as the secondary sponsor, provided the drinking water and other supplies. Most of the Mile 15 volunteers back then were from different fraternity and sorority members from local universities and colleges.

and decided to reverse the race course, and as such Mile 15 water station became Mile 16. That change only lasted two years and a new race course was implemented. APOGLA moved from Mile 16 to Mile 20 for several years. Another change happened and APOGLA was temporarily assigned to Mile 2 near Universal Studios for one year. Because of economic conditions, LA Marathon changed ownership, thus the now famous slogan “From the Stadium to the Sea” started. With this change, APOGLA found a new home in Mile 13 which is the half-way point of the race. The rest is history. We have been very consistent, hard working and very happy to be part of this event.
