YOUR PATH to LUXURY BEGINS with the VERY BEST. AUSTIN BOERNE FREDERICKSBURG NEW BRAUNFELS SAN ANTONIO VERYBESTFORAUSTIN.COM

FTER A SWELTERING SUMMER, WE’RE EMERGING from the AC and into fall fashion that has us longing for cooler days and crisper nights. In “Looks & Libations,” we feature styles inspired by crafty cocktails. This year’s fall shoot took place at Honey Moon Spirit Lounge, in front of ever-changing eclectic, vintage-chic backdrops. In addition to the fashion feature, be sure to check out our Behind-the-Scenes spread to see the magic that’s happening on the other side of the camera lens.

From drinks to dessert, “Just Dough It” showcases floral cakes from Deaux Baker (pronounced like “dough”) that may appear to be too good to eat, but looks can be deceiving. These cakes, inspired by the seasons, build on flavors and are made with Italian buttercream instead of fondant.

“My cakes have a lot of depth and contrast of flavors. I methodically put a lot into the flavors,” Pamela Thibodeaux says. “I actually find the flavor of my cakes to be more important to me than the aesthetic.”

This month’s issue also spotlights four local designers in our Austin Eye View series. Celebrating a milestone anniversary this year, Katie Kime offers everything from matching pajamas to wallpaper. Their print series dubbed “city toiles” is Kime’s take on cities across the U.S., including an Austin print splashed with buildings from our skyline, the Pennybacker bridge and what appears to be Willie Nelson playing a guitar. Growing shoe brand, Kiki Price, is based on 40 years of research on modeled footwear. Their heels and pumps empower women — keeping them comfortable in sleek, stylish, sophisticated and showstopping shoes. Kennimer is home to unique western wear with an inspiration from nature. Their hats are brightly colored classics that are designed to stand the test of time. Designer Dean Fredrick delivers custom jewelry that exudes elegance and is truly one of a kind. Described as having a “perfectly trained quality eye for diamonds,” his level of precision and expertise is something that any enthusiast of fine gemstones can admire.

For our male readers, in “Today’s Gear, Tomorrow’s Inspiration,” we explore Huckberry — an everyday men’s clothing brand and one-stop-shop.

“Our mission from day one has always been to inspire and equip adventures near and far, and there is no greater totem for adventure than Mark Twain’s ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.’ We always wanted our name to pay homage to the book’s spirit of adventure while still having our own identity, so that’s why our name is Huckberry,” cofounder Andy Forch explains. “More practically speaking, Huckberry was available on GoDaddy for $8.99, which is important when you’re bootstrapping a company.”

Although Huckberry is a national retailer, the now-Austin-based brand is looking to get more involved in the local community. They’ve worked with local musicians, Jamestown Revival, and had a presence at Aaron Franklin’s most recent Hot Luck Festival. And another (very insider baseball) Austin adjacent connection: HBO’s “The Last of Us” — which starts off in the Live Music Capital of the World as the apocalypse begins — prominently featured the company’s best-selling flannel waxed trucker jacket on Pedro Pascal all season. So whether you’re running away from cordycep-infested hordes or jogging around Lady Bird Lake with your kiddos, Huckberry has something for every adventure.

Rugged and Refined

AFTER A DISAPPOINTING ENDING

to our 2022 Mille Miglia vintage car race (our car broke down on the final day!), we returned to Italy this summer for another try. Not many people know about the Mille Miglia, unless you happen to be Italian or a vintage car afficionado. The race started in 1927 and spans over 1,000 miles all over Italy on an open road course. This means driving at top speed through major cities and tiny cobblestoned villages, often threading the needle in an imaginary narrow “third lane” through the center line. Tiny race cars weave and vie for placement between large trucks, cyclists and little old nonnas tugging shopping trolleys in crosswalks. Vintage Alpha Romeos, gullwing Mercedes, Porsche speedsters, Ferraris and other magnificent creations all log jam at roundabouts, trying to cut the traffic lines and each other, with ensuing honking, fist shaking and the fanfare of gathered spectators.

Last year I had naïve, misconstrued ideas of being glamorous in a convertible and tooling romantically with my beloved around the Italian countryside. The reality and rigors quickly cured me of that. This year Mark and I knew to expect long, grueling, sweaty days; little sleep; runny scrambled eggs at bad hotel breakfast buffets and, most of all, to expect the unexpected. And we got that.

We had intense heat again. We had a broken convertible top held together with a zip tie during a slanting rainstorm, two flat tires, a night of no headlights blindly following the car in front of us or holding a flashlight and a mishap regarding diesel fuel in an unleaded tank. Not good. But our sassy little blue and white 1956 Austin Healey was as badass as she was beautiful, complete with vin-

tage Texas plates on the back. We were undeterred by sweat-soaked backsides, 15 hours of driving in a day, sooty-grimy faces and fingernails, perilous mountain switchbacks, hotels with no hot water left, late nights and early mornings. We knew to savor certain moments — the gorgeous sunsets over Tuscan vineyard-lined hillsides that looked like painted tapestries, the cold beer at the end of a long-ass day, the smell of blooming jasmine along the route, the contrast of brightly colored cars set against ancient stone walls and arches and the brief interludes of calm to hold hands between shifting gears. We wore headsets this year, so I didn’t have to scream directions at him as his navigator. In addition to calling out every upcoming turn (“In 2K at the next roundabout, you will take the third exit towards nine o’clock,” etc.) we also made a point to call out other notable things such as, “Beauty alert! Stunner valley to your right.” We made a point to notice and savor, not just endure.

We got to drive around the Colosseum in Rome at night, watched the lights of the Duomo flicker on at sunset in Milan, and line up on the red carpet of cars in the piazza in Siena. Best of all, we got to cross the finish line in Brescia, our friends springing out of the crowds to hand us two aperol spritzes to toast to our completion. Then we got our medals, a boxed trophy of local wine and were sprayed with champagne by our fabulous teammates. The ride, and our redemption, were very sweet.

Afterwards, we headed to Lake Garda for a few days of relaxation in a gorgeous castle estate converted to a boutique hotel. I traded in my dirty race polos and ball caps, and opened my compression packing zip bag full of dresses, which exploded with color and femininity. We sat by the pool, had

dinners by the water, joined friends for a day on a Riva yacht, and had champagne breakfast on the patio. I slow-danced with my co-driver, my lover, my best friend, my soon-to-be husband, on the empty upstairs terrace at night under a disco ball of stars.

Decadence and fashion are lovely, don’t get me wrong. I was so happy to be surrounded by the timeless sophistication of Italian architecture and the elegance of well-dressed European couples. But I also realized something else about fashion — just like love, it isn’t just about what is pretty. Sometimes it is about finding the beauty in the grit, about the contrast between the rugged and the refined, the old and the new, the work and the pleasure, the softness and the strength, the shining moment in the mess or chaos. It’s about the specific balance that makes you feel authentic and beautiful. It’s about first fully inhabiting yourself — and then getting dressed to go live your adventure.

DEAN FREDRICK DEANFREDRICK.COM

By appointment only, you can find a unique fine jewelry experience with New Braunfels-based designer Dean Fredrick. Described as having a “perfectly trained quality eye for diamonds,” this level of precision and expertise is something that any enthusiast of fine gemstones can get on board with. First designing jewelry at a young age back in high school, Dean has since trained with some of the world’s leading diamond experts at both Taylor Burton in Los Angeles and while studying and graduating with a degree in Gemology from the Gemological Institute of America, GIA. Celebrity fans of his work include Celine Dion, Hallie Berry, Marisa Tomei, Paula Abdul and more.

We’d love to learn more about the process for your custom jewelry. When a client comes to my studio for custom jewelry, we start with a consultation to understand their style and preferences. It’s essential to me that each piece I design is a true reflection of the client’s vision. Using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, I create detailed 3-D renderings of the custom piece based on their ideas. The client gets to see different angles and perspectives, and

we work together to fine-tune the design until it’s perfect. For engagement rings, we carefully select the center stone, and I provide all the information they need to make an informed decision. Once the design is approved, I begin the crafting process. With my expertise in jewelry making and gemology, I ensure that every detail is meticulously crafted. The result is a stunning and unique piece of jewelry that holds special meaning for my clients. I’m here to

make the whole experience enjoyable and stress-free. I take great pride in delivering a custom-made piece that will be treasured for a lifetime.

What are some of your favorite pieces you’ve designed?

One of my favorite pieces is the "Emily Michelle" engagement ring. It's a signature Dean Fredrick design that truly represents my style. The ring features an exquisite 2.23ct rustic greyish-black, pear-shaped, rose-cut

diamond set in a platinum bezel. The band, made of 18k rose gold, has three bezel-set blue sapphires cascading down. I personally hand-carved intricate vine-like engravings on the sides, adding a unique touch to the ring.

What makes this piece so special to me is that the client gave me creative freedom and trusted my decisions. It allowed me to showcase my design expertise and create something truly exceptional. The "Emily Michelle" engagement ring perfectly captures the

blend of modern and vintage elements that define my style. When people see it, they immediately recognize it as a Dean Fredrick creation, and that makes me incredibly proud.

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes mainly from vintage estate jewelry, including Edwardian, Victorian and Art Deco styles. I love the timeless beauty and intricate craftsmanship of these past eras. My design approach combines the best of both worlds — classic old world charm meets modern creativity. By blending vintage elements with innovative techniques, I create unique and timeless jewelry for each client, making their pieces meaningful and personal. Ultimately, I see myself as a bridge between the old and new, crafting exquisite jewelry that reflects the past while being relevant for the present and future.

What led you to become a jewelry maker?

My journey as a jewelry maker began with a high school art teacher named Mrs. Stiffel. I took a jewelry making course as an elective, and it ignited my passion for creating beautiful pieces. One special moment was when my mom gave me her grandmother’s old watch band, and I transformed it into my first gold ring. Since 1986, I haven’t stopped making jewelry. Throughout this journey, my parents have been my biggest supporters, encouraging me to pursue my passion. Their belief in me has been a constant inspiration. Now, I’m grateful to do what I love — crafting meaningful jewelry for my clients every day.

What are some of your favorite current trends?

The Comeback of Yellow Gold: It’s wonderful to see yellow gold making a strong comeback in the jewelry scene. After a period dominated by white gold and platinum, the warm and classic allure of yellow gold is back in style, and I’m loving it.

Embracing Alternative Gemstones:

While diamonds have always been my specialty, it’s refreshing to witness the growing popularity of alternative gemstones for engagement rings. Rustic diamonds and various colored sapphires, like the striking teal hues and the exquisite Padparadscha sapphire, are gaining popularity. These unique and vibrant stones add a fresh twist to traditional engagement ring designs. These trends allow me to explore more creative avenues in my designs and offer clients a diverse range of options to choose from. As a designer, it’s always exciting to see how trends evolve and influence the world of jewelry. I’m passionate about incorporating these trends into my creations and crafting exquisite pieces that reflect the individuality and style of each client.

What is your advice for anyone considering getting a custom piece made?

Find a custom jewelry designer you trust and connect with. Share your vision clearly with the designer. Trust the designer’s expertise and creativity. Gather inspiration to help the designer understand your style. Be open to exploring different options. Be patient; custom pieces take time. Plan ahead if it’s for a special occasion. Enjoy the process and let the designer create your dream piece!

What is one of your favorite things about being a jewelry designer?

I’m proud to create around 300 custom engagement rings each year. Getting to know every client personally is the best part of my work; we often become friends or even feel like family. Crafting these meaningful pieces is not just a job; it’s my passion and a way to be part of special moments in my clients’ lives. I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do what I love.

What are your plans for future growth?

I’m currently exploring the option of opening a small appointment studio in Austin again. Austin feels

like home to me, and over half of my clients are still from the Austin area. This new studio will make it easier for my Austin clientele to drop off or pick up pieces and have in-person design consultations. Although I now conduct many Zoom appointments with clients from all over the world. It’s been an exciting development that allows me to connect with individuals globally and offer them personalized design consultations, regardless of their location.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is best described as comfortable and simplified. I prefer wearing t-shirts without graphics. I can’t stand graphics. I tend to stick to shades of grey, rarely incorporating colors into my wardrobe. Collared shirts are definitely a NO. While some people might perceive my style as wearing the same thing every day, I appreciate the ease and comfort of my clothing choices. I don’t like to spend much time thinking about what to wear each day. Interestingly, despite being a jewelry designer, I never wear jewelry myself. The only exception is my Apple watch; I find it practical and functional. In summary, my personal style reflects a no-fuss, minimalistic approach, emphasizing comfort and simplicity.

KATIE KIME

KATIEKIME.COM

Celebrating a milestone anniversary this year, Austin-based Katie Kime offers everything from matching pajamas and wallpaper, other pieces of wall art, and a print dubbed “city toiles” that offers Kime’s take on cities across the U.S., including an Austin print splashed with buildings from our most loved skyline, the Pennybacker bridge, and what appears to be Willie Nelson playing a guitar. Other Texas-based prints are designed with inspiration from Dallas, Houston and Fort Worth.

Congratulations on your 10th anniversary! How do you feel about how far the brand has come, plus plans for the future?

I can’t believe it! I mean I can, and I can’t. Seems like yesterday and 100 years. I’m very proud but I’m also deeply competitive with myself and my vision, so while I’m so happy with how far we’ve come, I’m mostly focused on where we’re going. That includes product expansion, wholesale accounts and eventually retail stores.

Katie Kime is a fruition and manifestation of a dream I had at 22 years old, to create the next great American lifestyle brand. It was at 22 that I set out to create beauty and the Katie Kime brand. My dream is to make the day-to-day less mundane and more meaningful through prints and products. My first trunk show in college was momentous. Debbi

Krzyzewski Savarino hosted a show for me at her home, during the end of my senior year, including an array of things I had made in my then apartment. After graduation, I moved to Atlanta before making Austin my home. As the business grew in Austin, it was difficult to scale the production, storing and shipping of furniture, and we evolved into the lifestyle brand we are today.

Where do you get your inspiration? Everywhere it seems. But certainly, travel is where the majority of it comes from. Seeing how different people and places do things never ceases to amaze me. Africa has been a very special place to me and my family. I have returned several times and each time come home inspired. On one of my trips there, I spent time with a nonprofit organization to help local

women in Rwanda have opportunities working with textiles.

What are some of your favorite prints/items in the collection?

I truly love our toile collection. It took so long to create and how it’s evolved and grown has been really fun for me. I first saw a traditional French toile when I was in my teens. I had no idea what captured me about it. But captured me, it did. And

it was just always a thing for me. I then saw a modernized version of it after college, and it was just a whole new chapter. Eventually, I thought maybe I could add my own spin, and I’m so happy I did.

It definitely begins with some sort of fixation, or you might even say obsession. The pastel palette of the American South. Greece and its blue and marble bursts. Toile. Color blocking. For whatever reason something grabs me, and

AUSTIN EYE VIEW

it doesn’t let go for a while. In the time spent in its grasp, I try to churn out all that I can from its inspiration.

We’d love to hear more about the city toiles. How did you decide which cities to focus on?

The original idea was to begin with Austin, as our hometown of course, but also to highlight similar American cities. Cities that share a deep pride (some might call it obsession with

themselves) and have a certain soul to them. So we started with Austin, Nashville, New Orleans and the like.

What is the best seller, and why do you think it’s so successful?

Historically our banana leaves and oysters were best-sellers, but in the last few years it’s again been our toile collection, and within those pajamas and wallpaper specifically. We all have a story; prints like these can

enhance and add to it as well as be a daily reminder of something wonderful from your past and present. There’s just a feeling to toile. Even as the creator, I want to be there. I want to wear it.

Tell us more about the peel and stick wallpaper. Is that pretty easy to use and remove?

It really is very easy to put up and take down as it relates to the sticky part. Lining up the patterns is still a challenge no matter what kind of paper.

In your opinion, what makes Katie Kime stand out most from other fashion brands?

I think our aesthetic is increasingly recognizable around print and color

and increasingly contrast piping and stripes. Hopefully it continues to stand out as we evolve with new and exciting product launches.

What is your personal style?

Certainly maximalist. Of course, color and print are always a go-to, and generally quite feminine. I love a dress for any occasion.

My style is definitely informed by my North Carolina roots. It’s full of color, as well as natural elements. I’d say it’s a bit preppy, memories of my days at Duke, where boys wore bow ties. I grew up on the look of Lilly Pulitzer.

KIKI PRICE

KIKIPRICE.COM

A woman-led company with a self-proclaimed love for “literally” lifting up women is how Kim (Kiki) Baltzell and Lucy Price describe their growing shoe brand, Kiki Price. Based on 40 years of research from podiatrist Dr. Richard Jay of Pennsylvania, the Austin-based line aims to remove stress and pain on feet that you’d normally see when wearing a pair of pumps or heels. Both Price and Baltzell say they gain joy regarding anything they can do to help empower other women and make them feel comfortable in sleek, stylish, sophisticated and unique showstopping shoes.

What are some of your favorite shoe styles in the collection?

Lucy: My favorite all-rounder is the Eclipse boot. It is so practical because you can wear it to walk long distances (I’ve walked over five miles at a stretch in them to go to dinner), goes with everything, makes your legs look a mile longer, and looks like a high heel but it’s only two inches high, which just about anyone can manage. I also love our python slingback. The print is crazy chic and the style is timeless, but the pointed toe makes these shoes look very fashion forward.

Kiki: Hands down, my current favorite is the new chunky heel boot coming this fall. So comfortable, gorgeous — and I am wearing the sample pair and get stopped on the street. Second favorite is the “Love Wins” pump. Jeans, white shirt — those pumps with the message the world should live by makes me happy.

We’d love to hear more about the 40 years of research into comfortable footwear. Lucy: The comfort comes from Dr. Rick Jay’s years of working on insoles for Scherring Plough and Dr. Scholl’s. He is a podiatric foot surgeon with over 40 insole patents to his name, so he knows what he’s doing. Our shoe styles and shapes are not inherently comfortable. Without Dr. Jay’s technology inside our shoe, you might be forgiven for thinking, “Those can’t possibly be comfortable.” But they are. It’s the way the insole cradles the heel and sends some of your weight toward the back instead of all into your toes.  For the coming fall season we are going to be introducing shoes that are what I call “inherently comfortable.” By that, I mean they are flat or low-heeled shoes whose silhouettes (the toe box and heel heights) convey instant comfort that I hope will surpass the comfort of

similar shoes on the market: a loafer, a low bootie, a chunky bootie, and something I dreamed up for people with real foot pain (bunions, plantar fasciitis, etc.) that we are calling the Combat Ballerina. It has a beefy sneaker bottom with a dainty ballerina upper.

Tell us more about the process in bringing your vision to market. Lucy: When we started thinking about this project, the pandemic hadn’t yet hit and people were still working out of offices, traveling both for pleasure and work, going out to restaurants, plays, etc. Wearing structured shoes often with heels was

AUSTIN EYE VIEW 24 SEPTEMBER 2023 | tribeza.com

considered quite normal and even was the expected footwear at certain events. That all changed, as we know, and women felt comfortable to wear whatever they wanted (sneakers and slides) wherever life was taking them. We initially stayed the course of making heels and pointed shoes because those were styles that really needed the injection of comfort that Dr. Jay provided. We are very proud that we achieved that, but we too are moving with the times and want to produce more every day styles that women like us can and will want to wear out on an errand, to walk the dog or go sightseeing. Not sneakers but shoes that can replace sneakers and offer the same practical comfort.

What are some of the hottest trends you are seeing in terms of prints and textures?

Kiki: Texture makes everything more interesting. I love earthy materials with a sophisticated edge. Also, I love that the idea of no trend is trending! People want to have individual style and not wait to see what a magazine tells them to wear. That is why there is so much variety now in fashion (and in what we offer at Kiki Price). While animal prints may be popular, to me they are overdone. I love embroidery,

messages, poetry on my feet, shoes that are slightly mismatched. (Neither Lucy or I ever wear matching earrings — something we discovered about each other independently.) Also, I love orange — it is the color of creativity.

Lucy: The hottest trends right now don’t always translate for people looking for comfort (high heels, pointed toes, strappy styles). Of course, sneakers and Birkenstock type shoes are going to be forever trendy, I think. Women have decided they won’t sacrifice their independence and comfort for fashion anymore and the fashion world listened.

Black, pink, white and metallics seem very dominant for this fall and winter season. I feel like those have been the go-to colors for the last two or three seasons, but there is no letting up, especially in footwear. We at Kiki Price are leaning into black and metallics but also into embroidery. Kim and I are very attracted to embellishment and humor, and we wanted that to be a big feature of this season’s collection.

How would you describe your personal styles?

Kiki: I tend toward styles that are more androgynous, whereas Lucy has

a style that is a bit more feminine. I rarely, if ever, wear black. I love wearing white all year long, and I like simplicity. Even wearing a black belt seems like too much work for me. I feel my outfits are the backdrop for a great coat and shoes. Those are the items that matter most to me.

Lucy: My personal style I would describe as pretty classic in the sense that I like to buy things that I will love not just for one season but for decades. My closet has many, many pieces that I bought over 20 years ago. I tend towards solids, love metallics (silver jeans and a blue jean shirt, sign me up!), and tend to wear things that are body conscious. Shoes have always been the most important part of any outfit as much for the practicality (Can I walk in them a mile or more? Will they work if it rains?) as for the statement they make. I don’t often use a handbag or jewelry, so the shoes are the main accessory.

What is your inspiration?

Lucy: My inspiration usually comes from travel. I love going new places and seeing what is being done by local artisans. I am influenced by art, and people watching, and nature.

Kiki: I am inspired by my global colleagues, the colors worn in African countries where I partner in my other work, small neighborhoods in London, graffiti, my beautiful mother and anything worn by Halle Berry!

What is your best advice to someone looking for a comfortable pair of heels?

Lucy: Heels are generally more comfortable if the company making them really took time to last them properly. The last is the wood shape that is used to make ALL shoes. It’s the first and most important step in making a shoe that is comfortable. This is why a beautifully shaped but inexpensive shoe (that can look identical to an expensive designer brand) is usually not a good investment. Something will rub, pinch or hurt within minutes of having them on your feet. So that’s the first thing. Secondly how well the toe box accommodates the front of your foot is crucial to comfort. Thirdly, anything over three inches is a no-no for me. Two and three quarters will give you plenty of lift and elegance but won’t pitch your weight forward so much that you walk like a duck. And fourth, a good insole is key, or a great one like ours! It shouldn’t be overly cushioned or fat; it should have silicone pads in the forefoot and heel and some arch support.

Kiki: Don’t be fooled by instant comfort. A truly good footbed will keep that comfort working all day long. Bedroom slippers feel great the second you put them on, but you try walking five miles in them, and you will have some very sore feet.

KENNIMER KENNIMER.CO

A hat and clothing brand, Kennimer is home to unique western wear with an inspiration from nature. Husband and wife duo, Bonnie and Ben Kennimer, established their fashion company based on a love for bright colors, classic items over trends, an eye for creative detail and a love for making consumers happy and comfortable.

Tell us about the inspiration surrounding your brand.

We aim to pay homage to the traditional elements of western clothing and hats while infusing them with our own contemporary style. The Bronco hat is essentially the style of hat that I’ve worn for years, which was always my customization until I started the brand. It was my customization on whatever hat I’d go to buy. I would make it look like that. Once I started my brand, that was clearly my go-to of the style I wanted to put out. It’s become pretty popular because it’s a shorter brim. It’s not as big of a hat as you’d buy from other cowboy brands. Regarding clothing, the embroidery style on the Amaryllis suit is actually an amaryllis that I grew and did a drawing of to create that image. It’s a quintessential ladies’ suit, in our opinion; it’s a nice fit classic look. I

have several amaryllis that I grow, and that one was special. It was one I had never seen. It’s two sets of petals, and it’s a really nice flower.

We grab a lot of inspiration from nature and our current environment. We’ve been on road trips and come back with ideas from every scene we saw — for example, a mountain scape and some plains. We just draw a lot from natural life.

When did your company form? How have you grown since then?

We formed in 2017. The company originally started with our felt hats made using tools crafted ourselves. We integrated clothing into the business after a year, since growing from our home workshop having physical locations in Houston and now Austin. We’ve had the opportunity to dress some of the most dynamic art-

ists in the world, while maintaining a consistent made in-house clothing line, and continue to look forward to future expansions.

We notice a lot of bright colors. What are your thoughts on wearing bright expressions?

Kennimer always strives to empower individuals to embrace their unique style and express themselves through bold, colorful designs. The gold color in our brand is another color I have worn for a while. It’s just kind of been a color that I wear and I like a lot. It was nice to be able to put that in a collection and offer it to other people.

In your opinion, what makes a hat great?

When you can bring style and function together in a space that elevates the wearer’s mood, that makes any-

thing great. Especially when it comes to a fine hat.

Style is always subjective. The style of hat that you like is kind of open to anyone. The quality of the hat is less objective. A 100% beaver is the most durable and the best hat you’re going to get. With us, it’s just the way we operate. We want to have quality materials. That’s the #1 thing, I believe when you are looking for a hat. Is it going to work? Is it going to last?

If it’s high quality, taking care of it will be generational. You can pass that hat down. The craftsmanship is also important — it has to be put together well. In my design, I like to do different things you don’t really see generally in a western wear store. You aren’t going to see a lot of blues and pinks and brighter colors in a quality hat. A lot of times you get it in a lower quality. You can wear it for a

AUSTIN EYE VIEW
photo
26 SEPTEMBER 2023 | tribeza.com

season and that’s okay. I like to put my style onto quality materials.

What are some of your favorite trends for this year?

Rather than adhering to mainstream fashion trends, we prefer to follow our own path. Each season we draw ideas from what truly captivates us in our own environments, allowing our designs to be guided by our creative vision.

What is an important movement within the fashion industry that you’ve noticed?

The growing emphasis on making clothing in a mindful and sustainable way. Making quality pieces that will last is where we like to stand in sustainability. My hats are products you can wear for the rest of your life if they’re properly taken care of. You may want to get something else be-

cause your style may change, but you don’t have to.

I really enjoy that there’s been a lot of focus put on sustainability. People are more aware of fast fashion trends, which we try to stay far away from. We like to make things that are going to be your piece. You can wear one of our styles for a good long time.

What is your hope for people who decide to explore your brand?

The ultimate goal to is to create products that hold purpose and value for our customers. We want each item we craft to become their most cherished. We hope to inspire your personal style within our designs.

We always have people coming back and saying, “I wear it all the time. It’s my favorite hat and I love it.” Being able to create something that people want to wear and show off and having

them be part of the brand. For hats and clothing, we have repeat customers all the time. I love it and thank you. That means a lot to us when someone can wear it every day and still love it. Just being happy about wearing something that we create is pretty special.

DJ Diplo recently wore your clothing. How do you feel about that? Creating a custom piece for Diplo, like many other artists we design for, it always feels great to work with a person in a creative space. It’s really nice working and creating with other artists and creatives to come up with something we may not have thought of right away.

What are some plans for the future? We are currently working on getting a brick and mortar store in Austin.

We have an opportunity for a small space here. Plus, we have some other collaborations in the works. We also have a new collection coming out, and we got accepted to New York Fashion Week. We will have about 30 looks for that. It’s a big project along with a new line of hats coming out that will drop in the next few months.

EVERYDAY ADVENTURE MEN’S BRAND HUCKBERRY IS A ONE-STOP-SHOP

Today’s
44 SEPTEMBER 2023 tribeza.com
Gear, Tomorrow’s Inspiration

F YOU’RE CURIOUS WHY A MEN’S adventure and clothing brand is named Huckberry, the answer is simpler than you might think.

All SEO and website logistics aside, founders Forch and Richard Greiner decided to launch their own men’s brand during an adventure of their own. The two coworkers frequently took ski trips together, and one fateful day while freezing their butts off on the Squaw Valley chairlift, the duo talked about what it would look like to combine a men’s clothing site with an adventure magazine that was geared toward them — guys who were “living in the city but living for adventure.”

So in 2011, Forch and Greiner quit their jobs in investment banking, pulled together their (admittedly meager) life savings and ran Huckberry out of their San Francisco apartments. Now, 12 years later, their headquarters are based in Austin, and Huckberry serves as inspiration to millions of men with its “everyday adventure” gear, clothing, and perhaps most importantly, content in the form of e-newsletters, articles and video series “Dirt,” a travel and lifestyle show that “carries the torch of Anthony Bourdain.”

“From day one, Huckberry has always been about the people and stories behind the gear, and this content-first approach has helped us create one of the largest and most loyal men’s audiences in the industry,” Forch says.

With several high-profile partnerships and ambassadors, like Matthew McConaughey, Brad Leone and Alex Strohl, as well as huge brand collaborations from the likes of Coors, Crocs and Timex, Huckberry’s site sells everything a man might need, from quirky gifts of a lock-picking set to Forch’s favorite 72-Hour Merino Travel Tee that promises it won’t stink after three days. But it’s not just for the stereotypical outdoorsman, VP of Merchandising Tony Le explains.

“What does adventure mean to you? Getting a tattoo is an adventure for someone, eating new food, experiencing a new culture is an adventure for someone,” Le says. “The idea of adventure has changed over the years. In the very beginning, Huckberry was very outdoors. It was camping, hiking, trail running, and I think as the company has grown up Rich and Andy have grown up as well. For them now, being a dad is an adventure. Everyone that works at Huckberry has a different idea of what adventure is.”

Although Huckberry is a national retailer, the now-Austin-based brand is looking to get more involved in the community it calls home. In addition to working with local musicians Jamestown Revival and having a presence at Aaron Franklin’s most recent Hot Luck Festival, they hope to collaborate with and carry more Texas brands as they get more integrated in the Austin scene. And here’s another (very insider baseball) Austin adjacent connection: HBO’s “The Last of Us” — which starts off in the Live Music Capital of the World as the apocalypse begins — prominently featured the company’s best-selling flannel waxed trucker jacket on Pedro Pascal all season.

“It’s easy, it’s comfortable,” Le laughs. “It’s very versatile and stylish enough where every guy can wear it.”

So whether you’re running away from cordycep-infested hordes or jogging around Lady Bird Lake with your kids in tow, Huckberry has something for whatever adventure you’re getting yourself into.

Beautiful Hotels

Hotels Beautiful

THE INSPIRATION FOR BUNKHOUSE’S AWARDWINNING HOTEL MAGDALENA. BY

We sat down with Tenaya Hills, Senior Vice President, Design & Development at Bunkhouse Hotels, to learn about her background, current role and inspirations for Hotel Magdalena, recently named “Best City Hotel, Austin” in the 2023 edition of Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards.

Tell us about your background and previous projects.

I do not have a formal interior design background. I received an MS in Historic Preservation from the UT Austin Architecture School, then started working for Liz Lambert in May 2008 as St. Cecilia was under construction. So my education was on the job. The hotel opened in December 2008, so the six months leading up to opening were assisting her in pulling the remainder of the hotel interiors together. The next project we did was the Havana, which was like a design TV show. We took over an existing 27-room hotel and had a limited budget and 90 days to purge it, make updates to HVAC and the roof, paint and landscape. Since we were reusing the existing furniture (which were amazing antiques sourced by Cheryl Coleman in the hotel’s previous life), we also had

to refinish, powder coat and fix it all. And then add in our touches — the robes, linens, bath amenities, etc. It was intense but a cool project to work on. On this project, we worked with David Clark, Thoughtbarn, Mark Word, Jack Sanders, Robin Kelley and so many others to pull it together. It was fun and collaborative — lots of great memories with that one. From there, I worked on El Cosmico and then our first new build was the San Cristobal, which gave us all great experience working in Mexico.

Tell us about your role at Bunkhouse. What does a typical day look like?

As the Senior Vice President of Design, I oversee the aesthetics of all our new projects and ensure they align with our brand’s vision. Collaborating with a talented team of ten individuals in the design department, we handle everything from the minutiae of selecting soap dishes to crafting comprehensive interior designs for our hotels.

What do you do when not at work?

I have two young sons, so outside of work I aim to be pretty present in their lives. Besides children and a full-time job, I do have little side gigs here and there.

I was on the team that just opened Uptown Sports Club, which was a dream come true.

What’s your favorite thing about Austin?

The city provides an exceptional platform for personal growth and realization. The artistic community, the diverse culinary scene and the strong sense of community create an atmosphere that fosters innovation and creativity.

How would you describe Hotel Magdalena’s style?

Hotel Magdalena’s style is a beautiful mix of vintage charm and modern elegance. It’s like stepping into a 50s Lake Austin house that got an update in the 70s. The textures, colors and patterns all come together to create a timeless and soothing vibe. It’s that perfect balance of Texas Hill Country warmth with a modern twist.

What places and/or activities influence your design?

As far as influences, travel and reading are a must when it comes to being in a creative field. You cannot Google your way to a good design. My husband

46 SEPTEMBER 2023 | tribeza.com

and I travel when we can, and in my department, it’s important we have exposure to things outside of our office and Austin. We like to go to the design trade shows and showrooms in New York City once or twice a year. I also travel a lot to scope out potential projects, which has been a great way to see new cities and places we haven’t gone otherwise.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

We recently opened Equipment Room, which is underneath Magdalena, together with Amar Lalvani and James Moody. It’s been a fantastic addition to the hotel, and it’s all about celebrating the musical history of the area. You’ve got to check it out — it’s this beautiful basement bar and we’re really proud of how it turned out. Also, I just want to express my gratitude for the incredible opportunities I’ve had at Bunkhouse. Working on these projects and being part of such a creative team has been a dream come true. Every day, we get to tell a unique design story, and it’s an absolute blast.

Board Inspiration FOR HOTEL MAGDALENA

A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT BUNKHOUSE’S CREATIVE PROCESS

1. MUSIC SCENE: Austin’s vibrant music culture inspired us to infuse rhythm and soul into our design, creating spaces that resonate with guests on a deeper level.

2. AUSTIN’S NATURAL BEAUTY: The lush landscapes, swimming holes and laid-back vibes of the Texas Hill Country inspired our use of earthy tones and natural materials, creating a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors.

3. ICONIC TEXAS ARCHITECTURE: We looked to traditional ranch houses and midcentury homes for unique design elements that pay homage to Texas’ rich architectural heritage.

4. TRAVEL EXPERIENCES: Exploring different places and design styles around the world opened our minds to fresh ideas and possibilities, adding an international flair to Hotel Magdalena’s character.

5. LOCAL ARTISANS: Collaborating with talented local artisans and craftsmen allowed us to incorporate one-of-a-kind pieces that showcase Austin’s incredible creativity.

6. VINTAGE DESIGN MAGAZINES: Flipping through design mags from the 70s was like a treasure hunt for inspiration, and it helped us build the imagined history for the hotel’s design.

Scent of a Woman

THE SCENT-SATIONAL CREATOR BEHIND ATUM FRAGRANCE

KRISTIN SCOTT IS NOT JUST A born-and-raised Texan. Her ancestors were part of the original 300 settlers of Texas, also known as the “Old Three Hundred.” But Scott didn’t truly find herself until she was in Los Angeles, a divorcee and single mother at 29. It was then that the longtime painter and fine artist — inspired by her grandfather’s own avid photography passion — turned to a new outlet, first for financial reasons and then, later, as her own true calling: creating her brand Spitfire Girl.

Founded in 2001, Spitfire Girl was born following a successful project creating three-dimensional invitation boxes for her daughter’s reptile-themed birthday party, which the kids apparently slept with for weeks afterwards, according to the parents.

“Being in Los Angeles, you’re just surrounded by so many self-starters,” Scott says. “The city is just vibrating with inspiration, and it’s also very accessible when you’re trying to build a brand because the suppliers are all there. So Spitfire Girl was started with the box card.”

While it took a while for the brand to truly

launch off the ground, now Spitfire Girl is a staple in the L.A. retail scene and still has a flagship store there. Large national retailers, like Urban Outfitters and Free People, carry Spitfire Girl products, which range from quirky gifts to ladylike tea towels, and pretty much everything in between. Scott turned to candles and a small fragrance line, and eventually her Potion Collection

sprung to life after a fateful discussion about Reiki and crystals with a friend over lunch.

“Something just snapped in that moment where it was like, I want to create a fragrance line that the oils, the elements and the construction of the base of the fragrances are blended for a specific intent,” Scott says. “It was intriguing to be able to create something that triggers and affects the people you

PHOTOS COURTESY OF ATUM 50 SEPTEMBER 2023 | tribeza.com

come in contact with. It can create this bubble of what do you need in your life? What’s missing when you walk out that door? How can you change the future?”

There are now 12 different potions in the Potion Collection fragrance line — including Love, Protection, Seduction and more — but Scott had an “a-ha moment” several years ago when she was compelled to create a new set of fragrances inspired by the four elements — earth, air, fire and water. Thus, Atum Fragrance was born in 2022, an endeavor Scott says took more than six years to perfect. Everything, from the scents to the gorgeous, contemporary bottle design and to the imagery each fragrance evokes, have been creatively birthed from the inventive mind of Scott in her Dripping Springs office.

“I start with a whole vision board,” Scott explains. “Every fragrance has a collection of colors. They have a collection of descriptive words that are used to capture a certain emotion you’re supposed to feel or the sort of memories you want to try to trigger in people. I’ll build a whole little visual world for each fragrance.”

While Potion was created to set an intention, Atum Fragrance, named for

the Egyptian god Atum who is thought to be the creator of everything, quickly expanded from the elements — “everything we need to survive” — to include other very modern and luxurious scents, all brought to life first by a name, word, mood, memory or trigger that Scott has. Love Always evokes a love letter written long ago surrounded by a pink cloud of chiffon, while Wanted smells ravenous and spicy, like sheer carnal desire.

Her newest scents — launched in August — all continue that trend: Offerings summons the aroma of temple incense, The Hunt is centered around English traditional hunting with smells of leather and the forest, while Jewel, named for Scott’s grandmother, is a tribute to the woman who raised her and has a bouquet of glamorous bergamot and fig.

“The more that you work with fragrance, it’s just so much fun. Where I could really draw from, as an artist, is the concept, an emotion, something that I want to create. And then you just really have to dig into what triggers the chemistry and the emotions with fragrances. It’s never ending the things that you can create through the olfactory.”

ELASTIQUE ATHLETICS WANTS WOMEN TO FEEL BETTER IN THEIR BODIES AND BUSINESSES

WOMEN ALL OVER THE WORLD FEAR AGING, PERHAPS even more than death. Recently, we’ve been reminded of this fear in the mega-popular Barbie movie. Her irrepressible thoughts of death or her curiosity for something bigger are not what convince her to venture out, of the perfect Barbie world. Instead, she braves the real world because she’s promised it will be the only cure for the patch of cellulite that recently appeared on her thigh.

Social commentary around beauty standards aside, women do deserve to feel good in their bodies, even as their bodies change and age. One of the most significant changes women’s bodies can experience is during and after pregnancy.

When Emeline Stout got pregnant with her first child 11 years ago, she worked as a lawyer for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris. She grew up in France but met her husband in Oklahoma while studying law there. Because he was in oil and gas, his work needed them back in the U.S., this time in Houston. She was eight months pregnant when they moved from Paris to Houston, so she had to get a doctor’s note to fly.

When she quit her job and moved to Houston, Emeline became a new mother in a foreign country and what now felt like a foreign body.

“You don’t go to get a degree on being a mother, so you learn on the fly,” Emeline says. You can read all the books and blogs you want — but your experience will be nobody else’s experience.” It was difficult raising her baby without friends or family living nearby.

“I met someone very early on who told me that the best gift you can give your children is the gift to take care of yourself,” she says. “You’re responsible for another life, so you have to be in the best position you can — physically and mentally.”

During this time, Emeline’s body was going through major changes. While this is normal and healthy post-pregnancy, she wanted to find ways to incorporate self-care into her schedule that now revolved around her baby. She dove into research, trying to find ways to make time for self-care amid the demands of raising a child.

She admits that her original goal to find easy ways to eliminate cellulite might sound vain, but there was a deeper mission to help overloaded women feel bet-

52 SEPTEMBER 2023 | tribeza.com

ter in their bodies. What Emeline learned in her research was that you accumulate a lot of fluid during pregnancy, which can cause cellulite.

“This is how my fascination with the lymphatic system started to grow. I started understanding that to manage swelling and to stimulate proper lymphatic flow, you have to either exercise or manually stimulate it.”

Mothers with young children often don’t have time or energy to exercise daily. You might have heard of dry brushing, a popular alternative to stimulating lymph — that can be effective but time-consuming, typically with results only after about a month of daily practice.

Emeline set out to create a technology using elastic, so women could stimulate lymph with no extra effort to their daily routine. Microbeads in stylish athleisure clothing would stimulate a micro-massage, the perfect scenario for proper lymphatic flow.

“What I think is exciting about elastic is that we combine the effects of dry brushing and massage, but we put it in clothing so you don’t have to think about it,” she says. “It works — and it works in the most passive way to actually care for your lymphatic system.” She worked with experts and doctors to develop the technology and prototypes. “Something that I’ve learned as a diplomat, by training, is that you have to surround yourself with the right people to get to where you want to go,” she adds.

The innovative MicroPerle™ Technology took years of research and development. The compression wear boosts lymphatic health, circulation and recovery, all while you’re going about your normal daily activities! Before launching, they did clinical studies to prove that their clothing significantly improves skin texture. The leggings, bodysuits, shorts and tops are chic and effective.

“This is the story of Elastique — making products that work for you instead of you working for the products.” Elastique Athletics launched about five years ago. They work with a French supplier, the country’s leader in compression fabrics. While their business is primarily direct-to-consumer, they are also sold in some luxury spas.

Now with two daughters, nine and 11, Emeline and her husband moved to Austin two years ago. The whole family is involved in the business. Her eldest daughter always gives her tips for TikTok strategy, and her husband is very involved and supportive as well.

When I talked to her in July, she and her family were escaping the summer heat in France. This gave her a chance to visit Paris, where she wants to grow the business, and for her daughters to spend time with their grandparents. She was hiring her fifth employee, with her core team based in Austin and Houston.

A big part of Emeline’s job as founder and CEO is raising money for Elastique. In 2022, women-founded companies garnered just 2% of the total capital invested in VC-backed startups in the United States. Emeline wants to help change this reality so that her daughters face a brighter future.

“I’m not going keep this business and this life that I’m living completely away from them because I want them to be savvy and smart. And hopefully, they will be part of the next generation that will help improve the ecosystem for women who want businesses and families with the right support around them.”

Just Dough It

STYLISH CAKES FROM DEAUX BAKER — PRONOUNCED LIKE “DOUGH”

WHILE MOST COEDS WERE OUT partying, Pamela Thibodeaux was baking cakes.

“It was something I kind of dabbled with in college while I was getting my degree — whether it was dinner parties or just trying to be like, you know, cool and fancy, and feeding people dessert, just making cakes for friends,” Thibodeaux says.

Thibodeaux is a self-taught cake maker who delved further into the joy of baking while looking for a creative outlet as she worked a corporate job for Hyatt. Her gorgeous creations showcased on her Instagram page, @deaux_baker, display all those different aspects of her creativity. Some cakes are brightly colored, others stark white, some swirling in abstract shapes, others more uniform. But all are expressively decorated with a smattering of festive florals, sourced from Cassiopeia Farm, that exude a wild, yet sophisticated, effervescence that can only be found in nature.

“I mean, it sounds cliche, but I love hiking. I like foliage. I love the organic movement of nature and bends and flows to it all,” Thibodeaux says.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF PAMELA THIBODEAUX 54 SEPTEMBER 2023 | tribeza.com

“So I would say that’s definitely a huge influence for me and my style. Floral design has always been something that has drawn my attention. How can I incorporate that with cake? How can I combine those two art forms?”

Eventually Thibodeaux left her job at Hyatt and moved into the culinary side. She admits her family is “full of big eaters,” and she wanted to express herself through food. She became a pastry chef at a farm-to-table restaurant in Dallas and was looking for locally-sourced flour. That’s how she came across Barton Springs Mill, based in Dripping Springs, which uses ancient and heirloom grains mostly grown in Texas. That restaurant became Barton Springs Mill’s first wholesale account, and Thibodeaux became fast friends with owner James Brown, a relationship that would serve her well when she and her husband made the move to Austin.

After working as a head baker at Abby Jane Bakeshop for two years and an almost-year-long stint at Sour Duck Market, Thibodeaux is now a full-time recipe developer at Barton Springs Mill,

while whipping up her fantastical custom cakes in her home kitchen. Although she says she tried painting, cakes are definitely her preferred art form, not only drawing inspiration from nature but also master Dutch painters, as well as Annie Albers, surrealism and Ellsworth Kelly — fitting as she has created cakes for the Blanton Museum.

“It’s a medium you get to eat!” Thibodeaux says.

In addition to her gorgeous works of art, Thibodeaux explains that she loves building upon flavors. A beautiful cake would be nothing to her without a delicious flavor combination to back up its design. She exclusively sells custom cakes and does not have a set menu. Instead, she gives her clients a questionnaire that includes questions about their favorite books, movies and art. She builds her cakes according to the seasons and what’s fresh — although she does preserve fruits ahead of time to have on hand — and she uses Italian buttercream instead of fondant or American buttercream, which she finds way too sweet.

“My cakes have a lot of depth and contrast of

flavors. I methodically put a lot into the flavors,” Thibodeaux says. “I actually find the flavor of my cakes to be more important to me than the aesthetic. To me, at the end of the day, my worst fear is someone looking at my cakes like, ‘Oh my God. They’re beautiful.’ But then if they go to take a bite and they’re like, ‘Oh.’ That’s the worst for me. I think of my late grandmother rolling in her grave.”

Along with her custom cakes, Thibodeaux just held her first cake pop-up at Summer Revival Wine Co., where guests were able to order her confections by the slice and pair them with wine. She hopes to continue to allow people to indulge without having to order a whole cake for a special occasion. “Not everyone needs a two-tier cake or they may not have it in their budget to splurge on one.”

In between baking cakes, Thibodeaux teaches baking at Barton Springs Mill and would love to do more cake workshops. She’s also mulling over the idea of some sort of cake book, but that would be down the road. For now, she’s happy to continue to experiment with flavor combinations, of which she says there are “endless possibilities.”

ABC’s Beauty in Balance

MODERN DESIGN, SUSTAINABLE AND THOUGHTFULLY CRAFTED PRODUCTS

AFEW MINUTES INTO OUR INTERVIEW, I KNEW

Kelly Buller was the type of woman many of us aspire to be. She’s comfortable and confident, yet still humble. She wears a million hats without holding resentment — because she loves her life, her family and her business. By how she described her journey into motherhood and business ownership, I could tell she didn’t make excuses for herself or others, which is probably why she is where she is today.

She grew up in Rhode Island but went to college at Auburn because she wanted to attend a football school. There she studied radio, television and film, which led her to Los Angeles after graduation. Her first job out of college was working for Adam Sandler — as his right-hand woman and production assistant, doing everything from taking his dog for a walk to contributing to marketing materials to assisting on set. She worked for Adam through six movies. And then — as one does — Kelly fell in love. She and Brett (her now-husband) met through a mutual friend while visiting Las Vegas.

“What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas,” says Kelly. Brett lived in Austin, and Kelly eventually found a job in events and production for the Circuit of the Americas so she could move here to be with him. She helped build out the amphitheater and bring the X Games to Austin.

In 2019, she had her first son, Hudson. As a new mother, her priorities and curiosities shifted. She wanted to purchase safe products for her son while maintaining some sense of her own style.

“I started to see a need in the market for products that were functional and aesthetically appealing and non-toxic,” she says. “At the time, there really wasn’t much in the space.”

room and on the weekends. At that time, she was still the marketing director for Austin nonprofit The Trail Foundation. But when she secured distribution for ABC products at Targets nationwide, Kelly decided to leave that position and start working on her business full-time. This was August 2020 — in the thick of COVID, and while Kelly was also raising her then one-year-old son.

“ABC was my second baby,” says Kelly. “I think all moms really relate to the balancing act, and starting your own business is seven days a week.”

Even though starting ABC was a huge responsibility and came with a learning curve, much like becoming a mom, it did give Kelly control over her own schedule and trajectory. “Aside from wanting better products for my son, I wanted more flexibility as a mother by being my own boss. I got more work in exchange, but at least I can do it on my time.”

Between 2019 and 2022, Kelly also went through two miscarriages before becoming pregnant with her second son — “so four pregnancies, two babies, and one business,” she says.

Needless to say, she was dealing with a lot of changes and uncertainty. Because of what she went through, she realizes the value of having a supportive community for new moms, something she aims to do with ABC. Through social media, they’ve also built up a massive community of moms (about 20K on Instagram) seeking more balance and beauty. Most of these women live in Austin, and the group helps inform ABC’s new products and designs. These women are thinking about the food and products they’re giving their children. Kelly shares meal prep tips and recipes (those she uses for her own boys) on the ABC Instagram account. For almost the first three years of ABC, they didn’t spend any money on marketing. “It’s all word-of-mouth mom community,” says Kelly.

In addition to the original silicone bento boxes, ABC now also creates lunch boxes, bibs and placemats from high-quality materials. ABC is now sold online at Target, Nordstrom, Amazon and their own website. They’re also in Container Stores nationwide, and the retail opportunities continue to grow. It’s no wonder — with ABC’s charming designs by ABC’s freelance designer, Emma Paige Brooks. “She has been my right-hand woman on all things design,” says Kelly. “She hand-paints the illustrations to create the design, giving us a unique hand-painted watercolor vibe.”

Kelly believes that moms can get more pleasure out of everyday tasks when the products are high-quality and beautiful. “The mundane task of packing lunch every single day can be more enjoyable if you use products that you genuinely like to look at.”

They also prioritize sustainability, using organic and natural materials whenever possible. Amid the messiness of being a parent, ABC provides a little dose of daily joy in its clean, functional products.

There’s a lot of talk about balance. Balancing work and life, balancing healthy choices with indulgent ones, and balancing being a parent with maintaining your sense of self. Kelly Buller doesn’t believe there is any such thing as balance. What she does believe is giving love equally to all the things you want to grow in your life.

Spotlighting the many looks of locals

STREETStyle

Fashion magazines and runways are often full of outfits that, while stunning, are unpractical. Austin is a unique city with unseasonably hot fall weather — and a casual yet polished style to go with it. We went to some of the city’s hot spots to find stylish Austinites in their element. Check out our favorites for real-life inspiration for your fall wardrobe.

Two–Stepping Style (The White Horse)

The White Horse is an iconic Honky Tonk with live music and the place in Austin to go two-stepping. Dancers get on the dance floor early and stay late. They range in age, skill levels and styles — but we love the classic country western look with boots and cowboy hats. These two looked great on and off the dance floor.

“I want to look cute on the court without sacrificing performance. I usually choose lighter colors because they complement my skin tone, with some 80s flare like my sunglasses.”

Pickleball (Bouldin Acres + private court in Zilker neighborhood)

Pickleball is taking over the city as a hobby and — dare we say it — lifestyle. That includes athleisure wear that you can sport from the court to the bar. We love the simplicity of tops, skirts and dresses with built-in support. And you can’t forget accessories — sunglasses, hats and cute paddles are a must. You can mix and match to create a variety of outfits from a few pieces. Bouldin Acres is the best spot in town to reserve a court for friends when you want to have a beer after (or bring some icy drinks on the court). There are also food trucks, a dog-friendly patio and lawn games.

Perfect Weekend Brunch Outfit (South Congress)

South Congress is known for some of Austin’s best shopping and dining, so we ventured out on a Saturday to admire stylish folks on the streets. We found locals and tourists alike — all in eclectic styles — on their way to brunch, special events or just enjoying some leisurely shopping.

Girls Night Out (Oseyo)

Oseyo — a chic East Austin restaurant celebrating Korean American culture — was started by a woman in 2019 to showcase her mother’s recipes. We found a group of lovely women celebrating one of their birthdays, ready to keep the night going long after dinner.

Fashion’s Revolving Door

LUXURY ITEMS FIND A NEW HOME

ABLACK LAMBSKIN QUILTED LEATHER vintage Chanel classic double flap bag from 1995 is lighting up the life of Austinite Keanna Ghafari, along with a display area in her home where she proudly placed the bag. Ghafari wanted to find a handbag made in her birth year, so once she came across consignment shop Fashion Reloved, she purchased the $5,100 bag.

Magdalina Silva owns the online luxury consignment shop, which boasts more than 100 limited and gently used items, sourced personally by Silva herself. Ghafari wanted to find something very specific and hard to find. It turns out Silva had just the right bag — complete with gold hardware — and in just the right condition.

“Finding something created around the same time I was born was just something sentimental and meaningful, and the hunt to find that was kind of exciting and fun. It’s also always scary trying to find a bag from a reputable seller,” says Ghafari.

“It just happened that my client had recently given me some Chanel bags. She told me she felt like she should donate them. I said no no — vintage Chanel’s are gold!” says Silva, who has a talent and detailed eye for knowing what people will consider a hot item. Authenticating bags is also a special talent for the former IBM engineer who has also

62 SEPTEMBER 2023 tribeza.com

been known to help get clients’ money back if they mistakenly buy a fake bag from another vendor.

Handbags are a longtime passion and interest for Silva, a Poland immigrant, who moved to Buffalo, New York at age 13 with her family. Unable to speak English, she would often spend hours in front of the mirror in her room, trying different bags with different clothes.

“I would just create outfits by myself. We didn’t have cell phones then,” says Silva. “It took a year for me to understand English and another year for me to speak it. I think sometimes challenges like that make you grow. You learn so much about yourself and everything else. I think once you have this one hardship in a way everything else becomes like, ‘Okay, I can do this — let me figure it out.’ You take on challenges a little easier. It somehow helps and it’s all meant to be.”

This calm and wise sentiment is exactly how Silva runs her business. With a beautiful outlook on life that appears to be even more stunning than her online consignment closet, Silva officially founded her shop in 2015 after deciding not to return from an extended maternity leave. A decision that culminated with a lay-off and severance package that Silva used to take classes, including one on how to sell products on eBay.

“I liked what I was doing as an engineer. It was okay, but it was never my passion,” says Silva. “What I really care about is sustainability — the recycling of items. For me helping consigners recycle their handbags and find new homes for them so they don’t end up in landfills — that’s my passion.”

Networking and building relationships are some other main things that drive Silva in her business.

“What my clients like about me is that I’m only a text or a phone call away. I’m very personable,” says Silva. “There’s a lot of competition out there and I support everybody else, but I think there’s some larger companies, so people want to work with someone they can contact right away.”

For clients who want to sell luxury goods, Silva takes a concierge “sit back

and relax” approach. She will take their items and make sure everything is photographed nicely. She then writes product descriptions, and lists items. Then, as items sell, she issues checks each month.

For customers looking to purchase items, she has a quick turnaround and ships items within 24 hours of purchase. Local Austinites are also able to meet to pick up items in person, or even have a personal delivery if they’d like. For customers who want to know more about certain products, Silva often does videos for them.

“Not only is Magdalena great to purchase from, but she really does feel like a friend, long-term,” says Ghafari. “We still keep in touch even though we had such a short exchange. It feels beyond just transactional.”

“Some customers might text me for a year until they buy something. I’m not going to treat you different if you buy, or if you don’t buy. I try to be very equal,” says Silva. “Sometimes you need more time to find the right item. I really like building relationships with people. Getting to know them, you always learn something yourself.”

Often, the items being sold have a meaningful story. In the case of Ghafari’s handbag, it belonged to one of Silva’s clients in Washington whose mother had passed away. The client didn’t want to keep the handbag so she consigned it with Fashion Reloved.

“That was another selling point for me, that it had such a beautiful story behind it,” say Ghafari, who now uses the bag for special occasions like birthdays and weddings, which she says helps tie special memories with the bag. “A handbag, no matter if you have your makeup or hair done, it lets women lean into their femininity with such beautiful pieces. It can really be a statement or it can be understated and really play up your outfit. It’s such a fun and creative way to express your personality and style.”

Silva’s shop contains items for both women and men. Top brands include everything from Tiffany & Company to Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Gucci and more. Handbags are a strong focus, but Silva also currently sells shoes, jewelry, clothes and additional accessories. She has clients across the country, but also a very strong local fanbase in Austin and nearby cities like Houston and Dallas.

Bill’s Oyster

DOWNTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD COCKTAIL BAR AND SPECIALTY SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

NEW ORLEANS IS MY SIREN SONG. It lures me back often, seducing me with its indulgent food and copious hospitality. When I’m there, I feel nourished, nurtured and nostalgic. But I can’t visit as often as I’d like, so my new stopgap is Bill’s Oyster, a delightful new restaurant that feels like a slice of the Big Easy right here in Austin.

Bill’s Oyster specializes in New Orleans-inspired seafood and cocktails. It’s a tiny sliver of a place, wedged between a dry cleaner and a trendy new Chinese restaurant — and brazenly positioned across from another seafood restaurant, the glitzy multi-level Truluck’s. It takes a lot of chutzpah to plant your flag across from one of Austin’s most celebrated seafood destinations. And while I’m a big fan of Truluck’s, Bill’s is everything Truluck’s isn’t: understated and cozy.

Open since May in downtown’s 2nd Street District, Bill’s looks and feels like one of those unassuming little joints you might stumble upon in the French Quarter or Garden District. After passing through its archetypal transom door, you enter a long, narrow dining room, reminiscent of a New Orleans shotgun house. A backlit marble bar lines one wall while a handful of banquette tables hug the other. Tucked in the back is a compact open kitchen. And outside, a few tables occupy the sidewalk for al fresco dining.

The restaurant’s decór is an ode to old New Orleans. The intimate room feels elegant yet relaxed, with crisp white butcher paper covering each table and bentwood chairs upholstered in

supple green leather. Retro lighting moodily illuminates whitewashed walls adorned with vintage photos and floors covered in antique tile. Food is served on heritage china or slightly tarnished silver platters, giving things a shabby-chic vibe.

The menu is modest but crammed full of tasty classics. For starters, the raw bar features fresh oysters from throughout North America, shrimp and crab cocktail, seafood towers, and caviar service. There’s also Clams Michelada — raw littleneck clams with a dash of vinaigrette and Mexican Tajin spices. And scallop ceviche, which takes a delicious spin around the globe: sweet, finely diced scallops mixed with minced Mexican arbol chiles and pineapple, tossed with Japanese yuzu and spicy, citrusy Peruvian Leche de Tigre sauce, then dusted with chopped Thai basil and chives.

Non-raw sharables include fried green tomatoes, fried oysters and decadent homemade mozzarella sticks garnished with caviar and freshly grated horseradish, served with vodka creme fraiche for dipping. There’s both fish and beef tartare on the menu. And while the yellowfin tuna tartare is very nice, go for the fantastic steak version, made with Prime Chateaubriand, black truffle and crunchy hazelnuts, then topped with a quail egg. It’s some of the best I’ve ever had and still haunts me months later.

For main dishes, there are jumbo lump crab cakes, fried Grouper fingers and a fantastic seared scallop. The lobster roll is sensational. It takes a deft touch to get a lobster roll right and Bill’s gets it right. Fresh, sweet, succulent Maine lobster is

lightly dressed with a subtle tarragon aioli and served on the quintessential toasted brioche bun. It ain’t cheap, but it’s worth every penny. And although you’re in a seafood place, don’t dismiss the terrific burger. Made with brisket short ribs, this double-patty smashburger is gilded with melted cheese, topped with sliced tomato, onion and slivered pickled okra, then served on a brioche bun slathered in special sauce. With a side of piping hot fries, it’s a gourmet all-American classic.

Take my advice and save room for dessert. Bill’s offers just one dessert but it’s the only one you need: New York style cheesecake shipped in from the famous S&S Bakery in the Bronx. Simple and sublime, it’s served straight up without any unnecessary garnish, fruit or sauce.

Being New Orleans inspired, Bill’s showcases drinks as much as food. It offers outstanding versions of NoLa classics like the Pimm’s Cup, Vieux Carre, French 75 and Hurricane. It also offers a variety of martinis, including the Siberia made with Ford’s gin, Carpano Bianco vermouth, basil eau de vie, black pepper mist, saline and a lemon twist. There are creative signature cocktails with intriguing names like Igor’s Laundromat, a rift

on a mint julep made with Wild Turkey 101, Rye, apricot liqueur, mint and absinthe mist. Beers include local, domestic and imported options and the wonderful little wine list features unexpected gems like a Sicilian Alcesti Bianco and a Spanish Lasalde Elkartea Txakoli, both perfect pairings with seafood.

There’s no substitute for New Orleans, a magical place that can’t be replicated. But Bill’s Oyster does a darn good job of capturing a Big Easy vibe with its marvelous food, drink, ambiance and hospitality. So if I can’t make the next flight to NoLa, I’ll take the next Uber to Bill’s. billsoyster.com

Sofar So Good

HOW SOFAR SOUNDS BRINGS THE MAGIC BACK TO LIVE MUSIC WITH SECRET SHOWS AND UNIQUE VENUES

or genres outside of our comfort zones. “People tend to have preconceived notions about what to expect from different genres, when in reality so many artists draw from varied styles and sources of inspiration,” says Chyna Brackeen, Regional Director of Sofar Sounds. “That’s why we call these shows ‘Discovery Shows’ — the whole point is to help our guests discover music that they never would have experienced without Sofar, in the hopes that they find their next favorite artist.”

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO A BAD GIG? THAT WAS THE QUESTION that sparked the idea for revolutionary live music experience Sofar Sounds back in 2009. As it turns out, the majority of responses are a resounding “yes.”

Beginning in the London flat of founder Rafe Offer with eight close friends, he realized that by relinquishing distractions and refocusing on the music, the connection felt between the audience and the performer grew immensely. The shared listening experience held that sense of magic that was getting harder and harder to find at regular live shows.

Today, Sofar Sounds hosts an array of talented and noteworthy artists at unique locations all over town. Forgoing traditional music venues, the inviting events take place at art galleries, residential rooftops, hip boutiques, historical landmarks and more. But the real catch? The actual site isn’t announced until 36 hours before the show, and you won’t know who’s performing until the moment they step on stage.

The air of secrecy is part of what makes a Sofar show something special. It’s not often that we find ourselves seeking out concerts from unknown artists

Currently present in over 400 cities around the world, the musicians that perform are handpicked and typically feature a mix of both locally grown talent and rising names passing through. As the years have gone on, the list of alumni has grown to include modern day buzzy acts like Billie Eillish, Hozier, Leon Bridges and Maren Morris. But here, there are no headliners or hoards of fans in tow. It truly is about exploring and connecting with music in an intimate and unforgettable way.

“The beautiful part is that we don’t care if an artist is playing their first live show or their ten thousandth, and we don’t care whether they have an established fanbase; it’s all about the impact they’ll make in the room,” explains Brackeen.

Finding its way to Austin in 2012, the company puts on multiple performances throughout the week. If your curiosity is peaked, the first step is to pick the neighborhood near you and snag your ticket. Next, you’ll check your email revealing more info the day before the show. Finally, you’ll arrive for an immersive and engaging experience accompanied by fellow music lovers. Each concert showcases three artists from varying backgrounds, and can last from two to three hours long. If an event isn’t BYOB (which they usually are), there are often options onsite to purchase alcohol and food.

In the coming year, Sofar Sounds looks forward to adding to its roster of interesting venues and even launching a new type of high-energy show. For more information about what’s next, head to sofarsounds.com.
