s principais festivais de verão nas ilhas do Triângulo estão aí e prometem animação até ao fim de agosto. Arrancaram com a Semana Cultural das Velas, seguiu-se o Festival de Julho, na Calheta (ambos em São Jorge), as Festas da Madalena, no Pico, o Cais Agosto, em São Roque e vem a caminho a Semana do Mar, no Faial, e a Semana dos Baleeiros, nas Lajes do Pico. Até ao fecho desta edição, só foi possível fazer referência aos três primeiros, ficando os restantes para a edição de agosto. São milhares as pessoas que circulam nestas três ilhas e que vão animando as festas, num roteiro único em termos regionais, devido à proximidade geográfica das ilhas e também das festas em si. Não constituindo um cartaz único, por enquanto, estes festivais assumem-se como um polo aglutinador da animação de verão e bem que podiam, no futuro, ser projetados no exterior como um “Triângulo em festa”, assente em seis festividades diferentes, cada qual com as suas especificidades. Nesse sentido, não seria de descurar uma maior concertação entre os seis municípios, principais patrocinadores das festas concelhias, no que respeita aos cartazes que apresentam, particularmente no campo musical. Fazer do Triângulo a maior festa dos Açores é um desafio ao alcance das autarquias destas três ilhas e que só traria ainda mais benefícios turísticos e económicos.

he main summer festivals on the islands of the Triangle are in full swing, promising lively entertainment until the end of August. They started with the Cultural Week of Velas, followed by the July Festival in Calheta (both in São Jorge island), the Madalena Festival and the Cais Agosto in São Roque (both in Pico), and on its way is Sea Week in Faial, as well as the Week of the Whalers in Lajes do Pico. More festivals will be taking place, which will be covered in the August edition of the magazine. Thousands of people take part in these celebrations on the three islands, experiencing a unique offering in regional terms, due to the geographic proximity of the islands and also of the parties themselves. These festivals unite people in the summer months through cultural entertainment, and could in the future be promoted abroad as a “Triangle Feast”, based on six different festivities in the region, each one offering something unique. In this sense, it would not be difficult to overlook a greater consensus among the six municipalities, the main sponsors of the municipal festivals, in regard to the offerings they present, particularly in the musical field. Making the Triangle the biggest party in the Azores is a challenge within the reach of the municipalities of these three islands, and it would only bring even more tourist and economic benefits.

ealizou-se na ilha de São Jorge o encontro “Arte e Património 2017”, organizado pelo Atelier de Conservação e Restauro de Obras de Arte São Jorge Lda. em parceria com a Ouvidoria de São Jorge. O evento contou com várias atividades em torno da História da Arte envolvendo investigadores dos Açores e do continente português, incluindo uma oficina de cantochão, no Solar dos Noronhas, por Luís Henriques e uma visita guiada que percorreu as igrejas setecentistas da ilha, com intervenções pelos conferencistas e pelo historiador Frederico
Maciel, com cerca de três dezenas de participantes. O organista José Carlos Araújo presenteou os participantes, na Igreja Matriz da Calheta, com um recital com obras de compositores portugueses dos sécs. XVII e XVIII. O encontro encerrou no Solar da Viscondessa (Terreiros) com um momento de comunicações pelos conferencistas Artur Goulart de Melo Borges, Sandra Costa Saldanha, Igor Espínola de França, Tiago Simões da Silva, Luís Henriques, Carla Rego e José Carlos Araújo. http://www.facebook.com/ateliersjorge

he cultural event “Art and Heritage 2017” was held on the island of São Jorge, led by the Atelier de Conservação e Restauro de Obras de Arte São Jorge Lda, in partnership with the São Jorge Ombudsman’s Office. The event included a number of activities around the History of Art involving researchers from the Azores and Portugal´s mainland, including a singing workshop at the Solar dos Noronhas by Luís Henriques. A guided tour of the island’s eighteenth-century churches with talks by lecturers and historian Frederico Maciel was a
highlight, with about three dozen participants. At the Igreja Matriz da Calheta, organist José Carlos Araújo presented a recital with works by Portuguese composers from the 17th and 18th century. The tour ended at the Solar da Viscondessa (Terreiros) with closing comments by lecturers Artur Goulart de Melo Borges, Sandra Costa Saldanha, Igor Espinola de França, Tiago Simões da Silva, Luís Henriques, Carla Rego and José Carlos Araújo.

A
Escola Regional de Artesanato de Santo Amaro, ilha do Pico, promoveu um workshop de palhinha de trigo. A iniciativa, apoiada pelo Centro Regional de Apoio ao Artesanato e pela vice-presidência do Governo Regional, transmitiu um conjunto de novos ensinamentos teóricos e práticos sobre a forma de trabalhar a palha desde o cultivo, passando pela secagem, rachar e escovar e a elaboração de peças finais como os tradicionais chapéus de
palha, as flores ou a bijuteria. O trabalho em palha tem vindo a desaparecer ao longo dos anos. Hoje o número de artesãos a trabalhar este tipo de material é cada vez mais reduzido e por isso o workshop constituiu uma boa ajuda para trazer mais pessoas para a atividade e responder mais eficazmente ao aumento da procura por este tipo de artigos, sobretudo o chapéu de palha. he Regional School of Handicraft of Santo Amaro, Pico Island, promoted a workshop featuring wheat straw in an initiative supported by the Regional Handicraft Support Center and the vice-presidency of the Government of Azores. The workshop provided theoretical and practical lessons on working with wheat straw, from cultivation to drying, along with cracking and brushing pieces to make traditional straw hats, flowers and costume
jewellery. Straw work has been disappearing over the years, with only a few artisans working with the material nowadays. The workshop’s aim was to introduce more people to the activity and effectively respond to the increase in demand for articles made of straw, particularly straw hats.

máximo a nível mundial que regula a prática da modalidade. Destina-se a promover não apenas o trail running em si, mas todos os fortes valores associados a esta modalidade, com destaque para as preocupações do ponto de vista da segurança e da saúde de todos os atletas que, cada vez mais, correm em trilhos por todo o mundo. he director of the Azores Trail Run, Mário Leal, has been elected as a national representative of the Portuguese trail running event organizers at ITRA - International Trail Running Association (ITRA). ITRA, which congregates several associations linked to the trail at an international level, aims to promote not
only trail running itself, but all the strong values associated with the sport, with an emphasis on the safety and health concerns of athletes, who are increasingly running all over the world.

ealizou-se na ilha de Santa Maria o II Campeonato Regional de Botes Baleeiros, evento promovido pela Direção Regional da Cultura e localmente organizado pelo Clube Naval de Santa Maria, numa parceria com a Câmara Municipal de Vila do Porto. Na vertente do remo, a ilha do Pico venceu as provas masculina (o Clube Náutico das Lajes do Pico, com o bote Maria Armanda, sagrou-se bicampeão regional depois de ter vencido também em 2016) e
feminina (a vitória sorriu às remadoras do bote São Pedro, do Clube Naval Aliança Calhetense). Na prova de vela, a nova equipa campeã regional pertence à ilha do Faial, a Junta de Freguesia do Salão, com o bote Senhora do Socorro. he second annual Regional Balearic Boat Championship was held on the island of Santa Maria. The event was promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture and locally organized by the Naval Club of Santa Maria, in partnership with the Town Hall of Vila do Porto. On the rowing side, oarsmen from the island of Pico won the men’s events. The Lajes do Pico Nautical Club, with the boat Maria Armanda, became a regional champion after having won in 2016, and
victory smiled on the rowers from the women’s team and their boat São Pedro, from the Naval Club Calhetense Alliance. In the sailing event, the new regional champion team title belongs to the island of Faial and the Parish Board of Salão, with the boat Senhora do Socorro. The unique competition has also proven to be a popular event, with more than a hundred participants in a endance this year from all the islands, except Corvo.

Jardim Botânico do Faial passou a estar mais acessível a todos os visitantes, através da instalação da sinalética para invisuais. Uma parceria com a Associação de Pais e Amigos dos Deficientes da Ilha do Faial permitiu dotar o Jardim Botânico de sinalética interior e exterior em braille. O Jardim Botânico passará ainda a contar com um Guia de Visitação em Braille que ajudará os visitantes invisuais a compreender a sinalização interior e exterior e, ao mesmo tempo, conhecer o Jardim
Botânico, nomeadamente a sua história e organização. O crescente número de visitantes que se tem vindo a registar ao longo dos últimos anos fez com que se tornasse necessário tornar o jardim mais acessível a todos e a recente sinalética permitirá que os visitantes invisuais possam percorrer e interpretar, de forma autónoma, as coleções de Plantas Aromáticas e Medicinais e de Culturas Agrícolas Tradicionais, bem como movimentar-se dentro do edifício dos visitantes.

he Botanical Garden of Faial has become more accessible to all visitors, through the installation of signage for the blind. A partnership with the Faial Island Association of Parents and Friends of the Disabled enabled the Garden to provide interior and exterior signage in Braille. The Botanical Garden will also have a Braille Visitation Guide that will help blind visitors understand the interior and exterior signage and, at the same time, get to know the Botanical Garden, namely its
history and organization. The growing number of visitors that have registered over the last few years made it necessary to make the garden more accessible to all, and the recent signage will allow blind visitors to walk through and interpret, independently, collections of aromatic and medicinal plants and traditional agricultural crops, as well as navigating the visitors’ building.

segunda edição do Festival Cordas acontece de 10 a 17 de setembro na vila da Madalena. A MiratecArts, em parceria com a Câmara Municipal da Madalena, apresenta este grande evento musical, que inclui concertos de segunda a sábado no Auditório da Madalena. Os dias 10 e 17 ficam marcados pelos eventos de abertura, na MiratecArts Galeria Costa, e o encerramento, no Jardim dos Maroiços. A primeira edição do festival conquistou o TOP10 Best New Festival nos Iberian Festival Awards, que aconteceram em Barcelona na primavera passada. A programação deste ano trás novos sons à ilha incluindo Pipa, um dos instrumentos mais antigos da China, que vem até à Madalena pela mão de Lu Yanan. Pela
primeira vez em Portugal, o músico israelita Eran Zamir, apresenta o instrumento tradicional Oud, comummente usado em música do Médio Oriente, assim como o seu próprio instrumento original, Sirena. Tcheka, de Cabo Verde, Michel William de Moçambique, Maninho do Brasil trazem sons de outras terras num programa dedicado à Voz+Guitarra. De Portugal vem o guitarrista clássico Ruben Be encourt, o mestre da Viola da Terra, Rafael Carvalho, entre outros. he second edition of Cordas World Music Festival will be taking place from 10 to 17 of September in Madalena. MiratecArts, in partnership with the Town Hall of Madalena, presents this great musical event, which includes concerts from Monday to Saturday at the Madalena Auditorium. Sunday is marked with the opening event at MiratecArts Galeria Costa, with closing night celebrations taking place at Jardim dos Maroiços on Sunday the 17th. The first edition of the festival received Top 10 Best New Festival honours at the Iberian Festival Awards, which took place in Barcelona last spring. This year’s program brings new sounds to the island including the pipa, one of the oldest instruments from China, whi-
ch will be performed in Madalena courtesy of Lu Yanan. For the first time in Portugal, Israeli musician Eran Zamir will present the traditional oud instrument, commonly used in Middle Eastern music, as well as his own original instrument, the sirena. Tcheka from Cape Verde, Michel William from Mozambique and Maninho from Brazil will also bring international sounds in a program dedicated to voice and guitar. Visitors will be given access to a tool that makes it possible to choose travel packages or make their own personalized trips. Customers can build an itinerary of how they want to visit the seven islands (Flores / Corvo, Faial, Pico, São Jorge and Graciosa / Santa Maria), along with five interactive platforms that allow them to discover
detailed offers of each destination. The website aims to give travellers a diverse range of holiday options, showcasing the diversity of each island. The new platform also comes with many useful digital features to facilitate its expansion into priority markets of the United States, Canada and Central Europe. Fonte Travel has already started a series of promotions to tie in with these features for the international market, with a focus on offering visitors travel options during the low and intermediate seasons, from November to April.
