LIVING THE DREAM

Professional Ballerina, Jan Burkhard

Tell us about yourself. I am from Piscataway, New Jersey. My father was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ and my mother is from the Philippines. They met working in a hospital in Newark, NJ where my Mom was a R.N. and my dad worked in the boiler room as a mechanic at the time. I have a younger brother and younger sister as well. My sister and I both danced growing up and my brother played sports. My parents shuttled my sister and I back and forth to the School of American Ballet in New York City, appeared at all of my brothers games, while both having full-times jobs. My childhood in a nutshell consisted of me doing what I loved always, and my parents helping me do it at any cost. Theyshowed me what family truly means, what love for your children really is, and what hard work and dedication brings you- fulfillment, happiness and love. • Written By Heather Green • Photo by Juli Leonard, Performance Photo by Chris Walt Photography 14 | triangle style

Have you always wanted to be a ballerina?

I always have loved to dance since I can remember any kind of dance! However, like most little girls, I, of course wanted and dreamed to be a ballerina. Ther was this part of me though that grouped ballerinas with unicorns in my mind. In a way, I almost thought they didn't really exist! They were like princesses. You knew they existed but you wouldn't ever really meet one or that there was so few of them in the world (which relatively speaking is mostly true). A ballerina was what I saw on posters or on calendars at my local dance school growing up. Fast forward to when I was training at the School of American Ballet in NYC...I had the opportunity to perform the Nutcracker with the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center. I was a party girl and angel my first year. I'll never forget standing backstage in complete awe when I saw all these ballerinas warming up and dancing around on stage before we started the 2nd act. I distinctly remember thinking to myself, "Whoa, they do exist! This is all real!" rom then on, I was determined to try to be one of them!

When did you start The Carolina Ballet and Nutcracker? Do you have any favorite scenes?

I joined the Carolina Ballet in July 2005 and did Nutcracker with them that December. My favorite scene has always been the snow scene but my favorite section was always the Waltz of the Flowers.

What are some misconceptions about ballerinas? Do you ever gets nervous and how do you handle your anxiety? Do you have a particular routine before a show? I think the largest miscon-

ception is that ballerinas don't eat, or that we all have eating disorders. Of course eating disorders exist, but they exist in many different professions too! We of course, need to be fit and trim, but we also need to be healthy and strong. If we don't properly nourish ourselves and keep ourselves strong, we wouldn't be able to dance as much as we are required to do. We typically perform 80+ performances in one season. Often within one performance, we sometimes dance multiple ballets. I believe the newest saying is "strong is the new skinny"... that resonates so true more than ever for ballerinas! I always am nervous in some capacity. Depending on the role, I'm sometimes more or sometimes less nervous. I typically handle my anxiety just by getting focused, thinking about my coaches corrections, the choreography, and what I want to try to bring to the performance - I often imagine myself doing the ballets in my head and how I want them to look! I guess I do

that in hopes that it will appear live on stage. Most of all, I talk myself out of putting so much pressure on being perfect because a certain amount of it is out of my control - I could unexpectedly fall, and that's ok! It happens. I tell myself to focus on being in each step or each note of the music in the moment. I just tell myself to "just be".

My routine changes depending on the ballets we're doing. Much of my routine involves the timing of when I get ready, to when I start to warm-up, to when I put my costume on. I never want to feel frazzled or rushed before a show, but you also don't want too much time before you perform after you've gotten ready. If I have too much time, I find it allows me to get too much in my head (in a bad way) and then you also spend so much energy trying to stay warm. However, I ALWAYS do my hair first and then my make-up no matter what. Dancers are superstitious. If you've had one good show, you want to do the exact same things getting ready the next time in hopes you have the same good show (at least). Ideally, you always want each performance to get better! SEE SOME MORE FABULOUS CLIENT TRANSFORMATIONS ON PAGE 45

What is your beauty regime like? Any TOP SECRET products that you simply cannot live without? I am a little bias because I am a con-

sultant for Rodan+Fields. However, I do find that their products actually work! I don't like to take a lot of time with regimens, so the fewer steps I need for results, the better! R+F's regimen products are about 4 steps...that has “me” written all over it! Because I have to wear heavy stage make-up often (while sweating), it's important for me to take care of my skin. I always have a face wash, a toner, a serum that either targets my sun-spots (use this in the winter) or a serum for 'acne' (use this in the summer) I usually get more sweat, heat bumps and clogged pores from stronger sunblock use) and of course a moisturizer! Because I cleanse my face so frequently while performing, I need a really good moisturizer. My TOP SECRET product that I simply cannot live without is R+F's lash boost! When I had my baby, the value of a few minutes changed drastically. Anything I could do to save myself a few minutes was worth it. I always have to put on mascara! I was looking into lash extensions because I wouldn't have

to worry about the 3-5 minutes it takes to do my mascara. Within that time, Lash Boost was launched. I figured I'd give that a try since that was supposed to add length and volume to my own lashes. It worked! I still like to put on mascara, but on days that I don't, I still look awake and my lashes still look long, dark and full. When I do put mascara on, my eyelashes are even longer, fuller and bolder.

What is your exercise routine like? Body aches and fatigue tips, how do you manage such a gruesome schedule? As a professional ballerina,

we take an hour and a half ballet class everyday. We typically spend half the time at the barre and half the time in the center floor. We do ballet class to condition ourselves for our days filled with rehearsals or performances. I try to take a hot yoga class 2-4 times a week in the mornings before I start my day.

I take hot yoga frequently to find balance both mentally and physically. Dancers are dominantly in external rotation always and it's important to keep our bodies in neutral when possible. I also frequently

walk. I find that walking is a calming way for me to get into my thoughts (good and bad), or simply just to "think about things". During the off-season I do more rigorous conditioning involving the machine, TRX bands, bosu balls and weights.

Can you share any bloopers that have happened behind the scenes? We don't typically have

that many bloopers 'behind the scenes' but sometimes we have “whoopsies” that happen live on stage! One time I was doing the Le Corsaire pas de deux and I had a skirt that wrapped and snapped. While I was spinning the snap came undone and my skirt was hanging on me by one button in the back! Another memorable moment was when I was Pinocchio and we had to put a fake nose on for when his nose "grows". When I was shaking my head, "Oh no!, the extended nose flew off my face and across the stage. ThenI was really saying "OH NO!". Catch Jan Burkhard in The Nutcracker now! But finding the right dress can be just about as easy as finding a needle in a haystack. With so many styles to choose from, how can you possibly know which one is right for you? Easy! It all starts with finding the right silhouette for your body type!

Pear Shaped {SMALLER ON TOP, LARGER BELOW WAIST}

Fit And Flare Is Your Jam

Look for dresses, whether sleeveless or with sleeves, that are fitted through torso and accentuate waist, then flare out from waistline to gently skim fuller hips and thighs. WHY: A fit and flare style will show off your waistline, which is one of your best assets, making you look slim and trim. Accessorize with a belt for added emphasis. BEWARE: Don’t let your hemline hit your legs at the widest point. It will make them appear heavier. Your hemline should stop between the top and bottom of your kneecap for maximum flattery.

No matter which side of curvy you’re on, showing off your curves while playing up your smaller waistline will make you look gorgeous!

FITTING THE NEEDS OF WOMEN FOR OVER 40 YEARS

WHY: An hourglass is curvy, which means you need lines that work with you, not against you. Wearing something that hides your curves will only serve to make you look heavier.

• Specializing in Hard to Fit Sizes • Sports Bras • Nursing Bras • Bridal and Formal Bras • Mastectomy Bras & Products • Swimwear

BEWARE: Be sure that your dress is generous enough to provide coverage for an ample bust and rear, and is not too tight. Going with the size that fits you best, no matter what that is, will ensure you look va-va-va-voom without any accidental spillage!

The Column Dress Will Make You Look Like A Million Bucks

Specializing in Hair Extensions Since 1998

Column (or sheath) dresses are straight up and down with NO waistline definition, which will create a long, lean line for your body. Choose one with vertical seaming to accentuate the effect. WHY: Your waistline is no longer smaller than your hips, and to accentuate it isn’t going to be a flattering look. Choose a slim, sleek silhouette and you’ll look amazing! BEWARE: Anything that cuts you off at the waist will only serve to make you look heavier. Go with the flow and instead of horizontal, go vertical.

Upper Body Dominant {FULL BUSTLINE, BROAD SHOULDERS, TRIM WAIST AND HIPS}

Choose A Sheath Dress With Waistline Definition It’s important that your dress fit you well through the bodice and below the waist to prevent making you look bigger than you are. Seams at the waistline can be flattering, but belts can visually cut you off. WHY: You are heavier through the bust/shoulders than you are through the waist and hips. You want to emphasize your shapely waistline while enhancing your curves.

BEWARE: A dress with a full skirt or too much fabric can visually add pounds. Also, avoid anything that has ruffles, shoulder pads, large print or other fussy details on the upper body because it will make you look larger than you are. Taking time out to find your best fit can make all the difference in how you look (and feel) at your next soiree! Schedule time on your calendar to go dress shopping and try on as many as it takes. When you find ‘the one’ you’ll know it! Then be sure to get the right shoes, accessories and shapewear so that you can rock your dress like a boss!

JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, RESIDENT TRIANGLE STYLE WRITER AND PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST KIMBERLY ARNOLD SHARES A FEW OF HER MAKEUP TIPS AND PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS TO TRY FOR YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY COCKTAIL HOUR OR PARTY.

Tis The Season... Makeup is always an incredible outlet for self-expression, but the holidays tend to inspire many when it comes to trying new beauty trends. And to complete your holiday look, be sure to check out the Triangle’s own Parlor Blow Dry Bar for a gorgeous blowout that will be sure to complement your makeup!

Writ

SHIMMER, SPARKLES, AND GLITTER - OH MY! Nothing says festive like a dash of sparkle. For a more subtle, wearable sparkle, opt for shimmery shadows.

For a more intense sparkle, opt for shadows with chunky glitter.

Stila Cosmetics Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow - These

glitter liquid eye shadows make it easy for beginners to get a look that sparkles instantly. Simply swipe on your lid and go!

MISS MONOCHROMATIC - Feeling daring? This season is all about monochromatic looks, which means you can match your cheeks, lips, and eyes with the same color family for a glamorous off-the-runway look! (And, yes, you can even use those red, berry, and wine shades - see Look #1 ). Some lip colors can even double as a blush and eyeshadow. For a more subtle take on this monochromatic trend, swap out your usual black eyeliner for a colored one.

Tarte Limited Edition Treasure Box Collector's Set - This limited

edition palette holds virtually everything you need when it comes to makeup this season. Choose from a wide assortment of eyeshadows, liner, mascara, cheek and lipstick formulas to complete your perfect festive makeup look.

MAKEUP: KIMBERLY ARNOLD PHOTOGRAPHY: HAILEY PORTER HAIR STYLING: PARLOR BLOW DRY BAR MODELS: ELLIE BARONE AND JANET MACK

“I never would have imagined wearing eyeshadow, blush, and lip colors that were all in the same color family, but this is definitely my favorite winter trend! The colors Kimberly used made my eyes pop!” said

Ellie Barone, up and coming 25-year old actress of Raleigh.

Her most recent appearances include the Theater of Raleigh’s “Rock of Ages” and Burning Coal Theater’s “Antigone.”

HOLIDAY LOOK ONE • Begin by applying a bold cranberry shade all over the lid. This may feel completely out of your comfort zone, if you’re used to neutrals, but don’t worry! • Apply a shimmery gold shadow on top of the cranberry shade to create a more wearable eye look. Gently blend the shadow into the crease. • Choose a deeper shadow in the same cranberry family (or a deep brown/black) to create depth. Apply to the very outer corner of the eye and blend. • If you want more of a dramatic shimmer or sparkle, apply a chunky glitter shadow on top of the lid with a flat shading brush. • Apply a lip and cheek shade in the same color family as the shadow from Step 1. If you want more of a neutral lip to balance the boldness of your eyes and cheeks, opt for a more neutral contrasting lip color. winter | 27

Local real estate agent and mom, Janet Mack, loved the dramatic, yet wearable look Kimberly created for her. She says, “I love how my eyes look smokey, but it’s not overpowering. I can see myself wearing this at work and then heading to an evening dinner and just feeling glamorous and polished.”

HOLIDAY LOOK TWO • Begin by applying a gold, shimmery shade all over the lid and blend into crease. • Follow with a dark brown or black shade in the very outer corner of the eye. Again, be sure not to pull the product too inwards, as you want most of the darker shade to be focused in the outer ‘V’ of the eye. • Apply a bold red or berry lip to complete your look.

YOU BETTER NOT POUT

For a stunning pout that’ll last all day and night, Parlor’s very own Liquid Velvet Lipsticks apply like a gloss but turn matte. Available in 6 shades, you’ll experience comfortable, long-lasting wear.

LET IT GLOW Highlighting isn’t going away anytime soon and with all the holiday parties this time of year, why would we want it to? Add a gorgeous glow to any look by adding a dash of luminosity to your cheeks, forehead, and down the nose.

Huda Beauty Highlighter Palette in ‘Winter Solstice’ - Choose from four wstunning powder highlighting shades or blend them to create your own custom frosty shade.

DRAMAT-EYES YOUR LASHES Whether you want to fake

it with faux lashes or boost your own, the holiday season is all about making your eyes pop with dramatic lashes. Some of the best false eyelashes can easily be found at most drugstores and will instantly elevate your makeup look to a whole new level. But this season, boosting your lashes is growing with popularity, as incredible lash serums are taking your natural lashes to new heights - literally!

Rodin + Fields Enhancements Lash Boost™ Eyelash Serum - Ditch the

falsies this holiday season! With continued daily use, this effective lash boost serum is well worth the investment, once you see the rapid lash growth in just a few weeks.

HOLIDAY PARTY FAUX PAS YOUR GUIDE TO AVOIDING THE FIVE WORST PITFALLS

WRITTEN BY SARAH YOUNG 30 | triangle style

‘tis

the season to be jolly, to go to holiday parties and get together with old friends. but unfortunately the best of parties can sometimes end up in awkward and embarrassing situations — unless, of course, you follow our guide to avoiding the five worst pitfalls of the holiday party season.

Exceptional Leasing & Management

Services For Property Owners, Builders, Investors, Realtors & Corporate Relocation

You Arrive Early/Late

Those who decide these things say you should always be fashionably late to parties. Who are ‘they’ and what does fashionably late mean anyway? As someone who as a child, and therefore at the mercy of her parents, always arrived late for everything, I’ve grown into an adult who has a mortal fear of arriving late, but that usually means I arrive early. So how should you handle it? If you’re early you have two options – apologize profusely, offer to come back later, or, apologize profusely and throw yourself into it and offer to get things set up.

And if you’re late? Well, if you arrive late for a dinner party, then you’d better have a good excuse – the other diners will either be starving hungry or will already be halfway through their dinner. Apologize to your host on that night and then send something – flowers or a bottle of wine – the following day to make nice. If it’s just a drinks party you’ll probably get away with it, although you could just pretend you’ve been there all the time and they just hadn’t got round to you.

The Dreaded Guest

Picture the scene: you’ve been pulling out all the stops for the handsome man across the room: girlish laughter, playing with your hair, accidentally catching his eye. You’re about to make your move and slink across the floor towards him when, into your path, steps the dreaded guest (or DG as we’ll call them). The very worst DG has, to be polite, wandering hands (the hand may start on your arm but before long it’s on your back and then there’s no telling

where it will end up) and bad breath – they always go together, I don’t know why, they just do. The trick to dealing with these dreaded guests is to be firm – if they touch you, remove their hands, if they question your removing their hands, pretend you don’t hear them and then turn back around to the person do want to talk to. That should do the trick. Another tricky DG to get stuck with is the talker. These people really like to chat and really have to tell you every intimate detail about their crushingly dull lives. Crucially, they have absolutely no interest in you or what you have to say; you are merely there to be talked at. There are two tactics for dealing with these dreaded guests—first, have a friend who can be called upon to rescue you from an emergency situation at a pre-arranged cue, secondly, let the DGs s witter away to you while you replay one of your favorite movies in your head. They’ll get bored eventually and move onto some other victim or if that doesn’t work, say, “I have really enjoyed talking with you, but I better go now.” Heading to the kitchen or the ladies’ room is always acceptable and perhaps even saves hurt feelings.

Everyone Brought A Gift But You

We know that most parties require a gift of some sort for the host, but somehow in the excitement of planning your outfit and picturing how much free champagne you’re going to chug, buying a gift might have just slip your mind. So how do you get over the social embarrassment of turning up to a party as the ONLY person without a gift? There are two of ways of getting around this. • CHUTZPAH – just waltz into the party, don’t mention that you didn’t bring a present and pretend like there’s nothing amiss. Your host will be far too polite to ask where your gift is and the matter will be buried. • BLUFF ask the host if the gift you mailed has arrived yet. When the host inevitably says no, ask him or her to look out for a delivery very soon, then order something online when you get home.

You Arrive Under/Overdressed

If your invitation doesn’t feature a dress code, it’s always a good practice to contact your host in advance and just ask. But if it’s slipped your mind and you’ve come in completely the wrong sort of outfit what do you do? In both cases the only thing that will really work (other than not actually taking your coat off, which would just look a bit weird) is to bluff your way through it. Laugh raucously at the other guests in their dinner jackets/jeans and t-shirts and exclaim that you didn’t realize it was that sort of party. Or just make no mention of it at all. Trust me, people are usually far too polite these days to make mention of something that is patently obvious to everyone. Everybody knows you’re dressed inappropriately, what would anyone benefit from actually saying it out loud? They’d just look mean and you would be taken into the bosom of the party as the wronged one. Perfect!

You Have An Issue With A Fellow Guest

Unless you’re a Mother Theresa type, you will have fallen out with people in the past – maybe you gave that woman who stole your parking space a piece of your mind, or you told your boss exactly what you thought of him or her on your last day at work, safe in the knowledge you’d never have to see them again. So you arrive at the party and guess who’s there too! You laugh nervously, you blush, maybe you apologize? No! You take the coward’s way out; you hide! Every time you see your nemesis enter the room you scuttle out! When you enter a room and see him or her already in there, you quickly wheel around 360º and you march your butt back out again. There’s really nothing to be gained from facing this ghost from your past, so ultimately the best thing to do is head for the door and go to see your friends – they’re the people you REALLY want to spend the evening with!

DOING GOOD

ANNIE’S ATTIC

Everyone knows that some of the best kept treasures are found in the attic…especially when it’s in Annie’s Attic; one of Cary’s most celebrated consignment shops!

Rebecca Chapman opened her upscale consignment shop in quaint Ashworth Village in Downtown Cary in 1998.

For almost 20 years Chapman has been welcoming customers into her pristine boutique - while always remembering the importance of community outreach, as well.

Annie’s Attic Rebecca Chapman

Written By Audrey D. Mark Photography by Terrence Jones 34 | triangle style

From her beautiful window displays, right down to her carefully curated clothing and gift offerings Annie’s Attic provides a calm and comforting shopping experience for all. Otis, Cary’s cutest shop dog, is sure to greet each customer with a style all his own, while the rest of Chapman’s staff makes sure that they are always “kind, honest and embrace everyone!” Inside, shoppers enjoy a neat and organized shopping experience, snatching up some of their favorite top name brands like J. Crew, Trina Turk and Tory Burch at great prices. Chapman is “very selective” about what she accepts from her consignors, always being “mindful of quality and condition” - not a stain or snag in sight! Recently, Annie’s Attic has begun selling unique gift items such as glassware from Chapel Hill, clever steel cut signs, (including a cute one that simply says “Cary”), and sun catchers made out of recycled wine and beer bottles which supports a non-profit group in Iowa. But perhaps some of her most popular gift items are the handmade clay charms, crafted by Chapman’s own entrepreneurial twelve year old daughter, Payton! At only $3.50 per creation, customers can choose from a clever selection of dogs, cats, owls, flowers - even s’mores, burgers & fries - and more! Each one comes with a little hook, perfect for wearing on a necklace chain, tying to a gift or even hanging on your holiday tree. The talented Payton can even accept custom orders - and the proceeds from each sale goes directly into her “piggy bank” to help fund her future college expenses.

While much of the merchandise goes out with happy customers almost as quickly as it comes in, whatever clothing doesn’t sell is donated to charity. Chapman works with several organizations outside of Wake County that give to people in need within their communities. These organizations are located in areas that do not have access to the abundance of special programs and centers we have locally. Annie's Attic also provides business attire to a local university, helping young girls look their best for job fairs and interviews. Chapman has made it her mission to make others feel great about themselves, share the fruits of her labor and help others whenever she can. No doubt, she, and her team at Annie’s Attic, are some of Cary’s most priceless treasures in town! 115 W Chatham St, Suite A, Downtown Cary (919) 500-1302 • stores.myresaleweb.com/annies-attic winter | 35

TRIED IT

‘LE GRANDE CLASSIQUE’ FACIAL PHYSIOS AESTHETICS

The Midas Touch

Co-owners Cameron Karchner and Jon Williams are the brains behind one of the Triangle’s premiere medical spa and wellness destinations, Physios Aesthetics.

Designed to provide solutions for all your beauty and self-care needs, the dynamic duo have housed their extensive service offerings in the heart of downtown Raleigh. I was lucky enough to receive their most self indulgent Le Grande Classique Facial.

THE SPA EXPERIENCE

The cozy charm of the historically-rich house Physios is in sets the perfect tone for any pampering service. In the facial room, flickering candles, relaxing music, and pleasant aromatics fill the space so prepare to feel ‘zen’ in just a few moments. Aside from the welcoming atmosphere and incredible facial, the team immediately made me feel right at home. They’ve made it a clear priority to create an environment for clients to come in and truly de-stress. Written By Kimberly Arnold

THE FACIAL

Physios Aesthetic’s ‘Le Grande Classique’ facial is one of the most elaborate, complete facials, which leaves the skin feeling perfectly balanced. It’s recommended for men and women of all ages and can be customized to each client’s individual needs. The incredibly nourishing facial centers around an exclusive deep cleansing regimen. Powered by the natural botanicals of French-based skincare brand, Yon-Ka, and their unique blend of essential oils, clients can expect a nourished and radiant complexion post-facial. The decadent and comforting experience is made complete with several skin-restoring steps. After slipping on my robe, Jon began the facial with the proper steps to cleanse and open the pores for the treatments to come. The facial included a warm aromatic compress, two essential oil mists, a vegetable-based hydro exfoliation, gentle micro-peeling, a purifying mask, a mask for the eye contours. A delicate extraction of any congested pores also took place to completely cleanse the skin. The facial even included a complimentary hand, neck and neckline massage, which I enjoyed so much that I almost fell asleep!

As the service concluded, I literally felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Not only had the facial benefited my skin, but having the chance to be pampered in such a relaxing atmosphere, instantly made me feel rejuvenated and at ease. To top that off, my skin felt incredibly clean, soft, and hydrated definitely what my dry skin needed, especially with the cold NC weather!

THE TAKEAWAY

I have extremely dry skin, so I wasn’t expecting to maintain the nutrients of the facial for too long. But a week later, my skin was still soaking up the benefits of this luxe treatment. I received so many compliments about my glowing skin and I can’t wait for my next facial! With such a wide variety of services, Physios located on New Bern Ave. offers facials, makeup artistry, hair styling, massages, pilates, nutrition coaching, laser hair removal, waxing, sunless tanning, and much more. I highly recommend giving Physios Aesthetics a try, whether it be to test this luxurious facial, or a number of their other exceptional services! 904 New Bern Ave • Raleigh (919) 828-1080 • physiosaesthetics.com

TRIED AND TRUE: MUST-HAVE SHAMPOOS OILY SCALP/DRY ENDS

Giovanni 2 Chic Pineapple and Ginger Ultra-Revive Shampoo

The trick with most shampoos is to NOT use the product on ALL of Hair. Shampoo your roots to approximately one third down your hair’s length. Hands down, my favorite shampoo (I used it last night!) It softens hair AND cleans it - without drying. Thicker than most shampoos, so you have to use a little more to get a good lather, Giovanni is as close to organic as you can get for such a great product. CLAIMS TO FAME: “Polish each strand with ultimate hydration, tropical botanicals restore shine & smooth tresses, improves elasticity & minimizes frizz, color safe, lauryl & laureth sulfate free”

Available at Whole Foods and on Amazon for around $16.

36 | triangle style 38

If the hair industry were to give out an award for “consumer who has tried the most shampoos”, I’m about one hundred percent certain that I would win. I am ALWAYS searching for the next best shampoo and assuming my husband won’t read this, have found the best of the best in my hair care journey – so it’s over Frank (wink, wink). My hair is naturally oily, but I have dry ends. I’ve had long hair, short hair, colored hair, over processed hair, you name it, I’ve tried it! And in doing so, I’ve discovered THE best shampoos over a span of 15 years. Some more expensive than others, but well worth every penny!

Phyto Phythéol Oily Hair Scalp-Exfoliating Shampoo

If your bank account is busting at the seams this month, this, it the shampoo to try! It hydrates without weighing your hair down and smoothes without flattening your tresses. I do recommend not using this shampoo EVERY day – every two or three days worked best for me but I have a more oily scalp. This is a great shampoo for those with dandruff as well! CLAIMS TO FAME: “A refreshing shampoo designed to reduce excess sebum (oil) production and remove loose dandruff flakes while providing lightness, bounce and overall beauty to hair”

Available on Amazon and at Walmart for around $26

DRY/OVER PROCESSED/COLOR TREATED

Herbal Essences

No kidding, I’ve used this shampoo since it hit shelves many moons ago and still use it to this day. I like to switch up my shampoos and this one is in my permanent rotation! It’s mild yet works GREAT on color treated hair and does not dry hair out. The best part, is the price! CLAIMS TO FAME: “Bright, uplifting scent,

moisturizers bring out vitality and radiance, Irresistibly touchable hair and protects color treated hair.”

Available at Target and Walgreens for around $2.99

It’s a 10 Miracle Shampoo plus Keratin

I am a HUGE fan of It’s a 10 products in general, but this one is at the top of my list. They are a very vocal crueltyfree company, which is another big bonus in my book! It’s the Keratin that just pushes this shampoo over the edge from good to fantastic! You don’t need to use much (and you don’t GET very much for the price) but it’s another one of those AMAZING shampoos. CLAIMS TO FAME: ”It's a 10 Miracle Shampoo Plus Keratin offers

PHYSIOS’ PROFESSIONALLY APPLIED SUNLESS GLOW IS A MUST FOR HOLIDAY EVENTS/PARTIES!

Jingle Glow

sulfate free, sodium chloride free, paraben free, keratin protein infused, prevents breakage, preserves hair color, restores elasticity, protects from sun damage, locks out humidity & protects from thermal styling.” Available at Ulta and on Amazon for around $51

THIN HAIR/LIFELESS, DULL HAIR

Nexxus Diametress Luscious Volumizing Shampoo

I’ve used Nexus products since I started highlighting my hairs DECADES ago! Whoa, wake up call for me. I’ve actually watched their prices go up! Boy am I aging myself. The bottom line is that they really do work well, some more than others and their volumizing shampoo is perfection. CLAIMS TO FAME: “Diame-

tress Luscious Volumizing Shampoo is enriched with panthenol, proteins, and ionically charged nexxuspheres to build thickness and incredible body into every hair strand. These remarkable ingredients contribute to the increased diameter of the hairshaft, adding fullness especially on baby fine, limp or thin hair.”

Available at Target and Ulta for around $13

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Shampoo

I don’t generally care for Bumble ad Bumble products but their thickening shampoo is an exception. Not only does it smell great, it REALLY makes your hair smell and look great too! I have thin hair (but a TON of it) and it REALLY pumped it up but did not make it frizzy after drying. CLAIMS TO FAME: “Formulated

with Panthenol, wheat protein and aloe vera gel for moisture, softness and shine. Makes hair look and feel fuller, with bounce and shine moisturizes, helps heal split ends and smoothes flyaways.” Available at Sephora and on Amazon for around $21

H Anna, I have started to notice something in my selfies...I have one eyelid that droops more than the other one. It bothers me and I am wondering what options are for fixing it. Thank you, Angela Angela, what you’re describing is not uncommon, though it can put a damper on your selfie fun! Many people, both women and men, suffer from what’s known as upper eyelid ptosis, which is when one or both eyelids drift a little lower than they should. This can be caused by a variety of factors, though, typically it’s just a side effect of the natural aging process. While for many people it’s just a cosmetic concern, it can cause patients to feel self-conscious and in extreme cases can lead to vision impairment. Not to worry, though, a slight droop can be addressed in a variety of ways, depending on the severity! For subtle, yet noticeable results, Botox can be carefully placed in the outer portion of the muscle responsible for closing the eye, which will result in an automatic lifting of the brows. It’s important that you to seek a skilled injector who knows specifically where to place the Botox for optimal results. If the brow is sitting a little bit low and displacing extra skin onto the eyelid, fillers like Juvederm can be used to add volume and raise the brow for a gentle lift. Of course, there are more permanent surgical options for more severe cases, like an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, but many people find that the “instant eyebrow lift” from the combined use of Botox and filler yields great results with no downtime. I’d suggest scheduling a full-face assessment with an advanced nurse injector to see which option might be best for you! 1.

SOMETIMES IT’S JUST ABOUT THE BOOKS!

People get caught up in styling bookshelves, but well read folks who have a curated collection might prefer the library feel of just books.

2.

PATTERNED OR COLORFUL BACKDROPS...

Painting (think contrast) the back ofshelves or wallpapering (think pattern or texture like grasscloth) provides a lovely backdrop for books and mementos.

3.

Bookends or a pair of vases or two standing sections of books with a well-placed object in-between are just a few examples.

4.

LAY SOME BOOKS SIDEWAYS, NOT JUST ALL STANDING UP, FOR VISUAL INTEREST.

And this applies to smaller books as well, not just coffee table size books. This creates a pedestal effect or “riser” for accessories and art.

INCORPORATE ART ALWAYS.

Mixed into the back of shelves, art is a fun surprise, and it is actually okay to nail apiece of art on the front of the bookcase.

6.

LIGHT IT UP AND SHOW IT OFF.

7.

A petite lamp mixed into or on a front ledge of a bookcase is a nice touch and adds ambient light, or fun sconces hard-wired above the shelves brings attention to the collection.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

The right amount of objects mixed in with the books is subjective – some people have a lot of stuff and others prefer a minimalist look. A good collection evolves and a good collector knows when to edit.

Written by Carole Marcotte. Form & Function

Everyone wants attractive, perfectly curated bookshelves these days. This used to be just a place to throw your books and, for some folks, it still is. Reference #1: And that’s okay. But if you are trying to style your bookshelves or vary the composition, use the colorful graphics above as a guide. Having a backdrop is a nice relief from an all-stained or painted wood bookshelf. What if the back wall was painted a different color? Or what if there was a graphic wallpaper peeking out? Check out the visual interest in #2. Much more interesting, non?

SYMMETRY OR BALANCE IN THE DISPLAY IS VISUALLY PLEASING.

5.

Styling Bookshelves Should Not Be Intimidating

And while asymmetry is still a go-to for me, a bookshelf is an opportunity to show off your symmetrical side, using different objects as bookends or statement pieces on either side of a stack of books. See #3 as one option. Or perhaps a lovely, singular object surrounded by a symmetrical stack of books on either side. Rather than following your librarian’s lead and stacking books all upright, lay them down as in #4. Thi provides visual interest but also allows the books to act as “pedestals” or “risers,” elevating photos or accessories to newfound importance. Art, art, art…don’t fret if yours is not a signed piece or a named artist. Display it amongst the books and do not be afraid to nail onto the front of the bookshelves as in #5. Art is personal and a wonderful way to break up the monotony of an otherwise all-book display. It would be a shame to have all these pretties and not light it up. See #6. Hardwired lighting above the bookcase would be ideal, but if you want a less costly alternative, a petite lamp mixed in with the books works well. It adds ambient light and brings focus to the surrounding area. If the bookshelves are large, you could add multiple lamps.

And finally (#7), how much is too much? This is subjective and is very much determined by your comfort level. Some folks love a memorabilia-packed, warm and homey bookshelf…while others want a minimalist look with few books and even fewer accessories. You will know what is right for you once you edit, and it is important to continually edit as you add books and decor to your collection.

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT Sometimes you just have to show up. It is not always easy to do so; work schedules get in the way; health issues can be a concern; transportation is not always easy to arrange; and the biggie for many, especially in these challenging economic times, is the matter of money. These were, to one degree to another, all valid reasons I had for choosing not to go to the Chicago Marathon, my daughter’s first.

Howard Miller Hermle • Bulova Rhythm Seiko

She was after all no longer a little girl--she was fortysix years old in fact—and this event was really not the same sort of thing as her graduation, marriage, first child, etc. In other words, it was perfectly acceptable for me to stay home. In truth, because of all of the above, she discouraged me from coming. “It's okay Mom, in fact I don’t want you to come; you probably won't be able to see me anyway; there may be more than 45,000 people running.”

2004 South Main Street, #104, Wake Forest (919) 556-8963 • www.clocktiquesrc.com Monday-Friday 9-5 • Saturday 9-1

All of these reasons seemed valid to both of us and I settled down; my conscience soothed, my practical considerations made perfect sense. But then my daughter said her cousin would also be running and that my sister would be in Chicago to watch her. Now what did I do?

I pictured my sister hugging my niece after the race and my daughter’s face as she was standing nearby—you probably know the rest—I took out my credit card, packed up my pills, threw some clothes in a bag and telephoned my daughter to pick me up at O’Hare. There was no mistaking the joy on the other end of the line. When my sister and niece arrived, they also checked themselves into the charming 1920s small hotel — with its English library atmosphere-next door to the efficiency where my daughter lived, we began what would become one big weekend-long party—the happiest, the most ebullient, with the most laughter — I have probably ever experienced. When my middle daughter arrived a day or so later, we were in high gear.

The night before the big race, we all went to bed early. Both excited and nervous, I said a prayer for my daughter, for my niece and for the people I had seen in the video, The Spirit of the Marathon—a young divorcee hoping to rebuild her self-esteem; a world-class professional rebuilding her strength after a particularly debilitating injury and an elite Kenyan (one who had finished second or third but never first) and the poverty he had escaped still rampant in his hometown. Now I would cheer for these people, too, and if not them in particular, people just like them. I was ready to take my post the next morning. Grabbing a hot cup of coffee and donning my winter jacket, I headed to the end of the street at 7:30 a.m. It was 31 degrees outside and only a very few people were out there, it was pretty much near the beginning of the race-at the six mile or so mark at Addison--most runners would be going by much later. But I wanted to see the elite runners, represented almost exclusively by the Kenyans—like beautiful gazelles, graceful and inspiring. It was as if I had a front row seat at the Olympics when the winner-of-the-gold zoomed by. When I saw my niece run by my sister and me, the intensity of my feeling caught me unaware, with tears running down my face; she looked so light on her feet, so bubbly, just like a two-year old racing ahead to her favorite swing on the playground. I was so proud. When my daughter came into view, I can’t explain why, there was something about her being in the midst of all those runners, which seared right through me. It was a marvelous, unspeakable moment. She saw me, ran over to the sidewalk, grabbed my hand and gave me a high five; the grin on her face radiated—in that instant I saw her all the way from my holding her when she was just born, all the way up through the years which followed— I was overcome.

Allison is just always wanting a vibrant colorful change. She is a very artistic and beautifully open minded girl, so she’s a really fun client for me to work with. I used Goldwell Elumen color to get the vibrancy. I did have to prelighten all over her hair up to a nice bright blonde. If you don’t prelighten, the tones can have compromised vibrancy. I love using Elumen because it gives a wide range of creative colors. As I stylist, I love being able to create such a beautiful outcome on a willing and beautiful canvas like Allison. 60 | triangle style

METRO'S OTHER WOMAN

Rescue To The

You’re on top of your game and you look great doing it, but who knew that it came with so much responsibility? For you business owners, parents, and other hard-working people out there, help exists! Metro’s Other Woman is an all-in-one service for determined people who want to make their lives more simple. The philosophy goes, “Focus on your strengths and outsource the rest!”

Sarah Benken pioneered this innovative company nine years ago in the Triangle. Her own need for a work-life balance, coupled with a desire to become her own boss, inspired her to start Metro’s Other Woman. At the time, there weren’t many opportunities for support and she certainly could have used it. “I needed help with everything from meal prepping to laundry but was commuting two hours per day and coming home exhausted,” she said. Seeing the need for an assistant service, she took the leap and launched Metro’s Other Woman. Afters years of dedication, hard work, and pursuing her passion, the company has gone national with four locations and growing! 62 | triangle style

Just recently, the change in ownership of the Raleigh location has been a huge asset to the business. A few years ago, Liz Williamson reached out to Sarah with interest in being part of the company. She dived in by opening up her own branch in the city of Wilmington. After seeing how successful Liz was as a business owner in just three years, Sarah decided that she was ready to pass on the responsibility of the Raleigh location. She was eager to focus on expanding other markets and brand building. Since Liz was very familiar with the Raleigh area and had a lot of experience with the business, Sarah decided to have her expand and become a multi-location owner. “Liz is a great fit for Raleigh. She’s been working with our company for a long time and has a plethora of experience in customer service. I truly couldn’t have selected a better fit!” said Sarah. Now, Liz and Sarah’s power team has made the dayto-day that much greater. Their differences and similarities match up very well, making them a dynamic duo. “We work well together because we are usually on the same wavelength. We literally complete each other’s sentences!” said Sarah. Side by side they run like a well-oiled machine. Liz is great with handling dayto-day needs like client consultations and trainings while Sarah focuses on process refining and the minute details. At the end of the day, teamwork is the the most important element to running a business. With the holidays coming up, Metro’s Other Woman can simplify your life by handling all of the mundane tasks: Home decorating, party planning, and sending holiday packages. From grocery shopping to full-service party help, they’ll cover it. If you’re looking to bring your work and life into balance, hire an assistant to take care of all those tasks that get in the way. There is no better feeling than coming home from a long day and seeing the dishes washed, the toys picked up, and dinner warming in the crockpot. And of course, you’ll find help here with handling all of your chores. Metro’s Other Woman creates a custom plan tailored to fit your needs. Plans range from 3–30 hours per week and can include housekeeping, dog walking, meal preparation, errands, laundry, and much more. Now that sounds like a deal! Finally, help has arrived! To make sure that you have the best help possible, Metro’s Other Woman will work with you to decide what your needs are, match you with one of their personal assistants, and set the on-boarding appointment. Matching is based on skillset and personality. It’s sort of like matchmaking, so you’re guaranteed to find the best help for you! 2501 Blue Ridge Rd #250, Raleigh • (919) 523-3633 www.metrosotherwoman.com

You might need to drive your car regularly, but winter weather makes setting off on trips and driving difficult. When the car windscreen and wing mirrors are icy, the wipers are frozen, and the inside of the windscreen fogs up so you can't see out, driving isn't comfortable. Add hazy headlights to the conditions described and going for a drive is a chore. Use these five winter car hacks, though, and you won't face such problems.

PREVENT ICED-UP WINDSCREENS

When you're in a hurry, you don't want to spend ages trying to clean ice from the outside of your car's windshield. Sitting inside the car with the wipers going won't improve the view and using a scraper tool takes time. The solution is to limit ice from developing on your car's windows with a homemade de-icer. Mix one part water with three parts of ordinary household vinegar. Pour the solution into a clean spray bottle and apply the mixture to the windshield in the evening before the ice builds. When you want to drive your car, you'll have excellent visibility as no ice will have appeared on the screen.

STOP WINDOWS FOGGING-UP

Cold weather results in fogged-up windows inside of cars. Your hot breath causes condensation that prevents you seeing out of your windshield. Driving when your vehicle has foggy windows is dangerous, and although you might try to clear them by turning on the heat, the positive results are only temporary. When you turn off the fan, the windows will become misty again. The answer to the problem lies in placing absorbent material in the car to soak up the moisture in the air. The cheapest method is to use cat 64 | triangle style

litter in a sock next to the windshield. If you don't have a cat, and so no litter, save up those tiny silica packs that come with new purchases like shoes or handbags instead of throwing them away.

KEEP WING MIRRORS FROST FREE

People often clean ice from their car windshield, but forget the wing mirrors frost-up and drive without being able to use the mirrors. Leaning out of your car to scrape off the ice while driving isn't safe and doesn't work well. Even if you remember to scrape them before driving, doing so consumes time you want to spend in other ways. The simple fix is to pop freezer bags over the wing mirrors overnight, so ice doesn't form on them. Remember to tie the ends of the bags, so they stay in place when the wind blows, and you won't need to clean the mirrors before you drive.

AVOID FROZEN WIPER BLADES

Wiper blades can become frozen into a fixed position on nights when the temperature's low. If you live in an exceptionally chilly place, covering the blades with socks won't work. That's solution for icy, but not dramatically cold spots. If you live somewhere known for thick ice formation, place the car wiper blades upward whenever you get out of the vehicle. You'll be able to get to the windshield to clean it, and the wipers will work.

AVERT HAZY HEADLIGHTS

Lousy weather messes up the clarity of car headlight beams, preventing adequate lighting when you need to see ahead of you or alert other drivers to your presence. Slush and mud can cover the headlights, so they need cleaning before each journey. Toothpaste does the trick with ease, but don't use a brand containing abrasive granules that scratch. Spread the paste on the lights and rub in circular motions, then use a clean cloth to wipe it away and buff the headlights until they gleam. Don't let winter weather ruin your driving enjoyment. Use the car fixes mentioned to improve your visibility and comfort during journeys and help you set off fast. Noting these uncomplicated hacks will save you time and make car travel straightforward.

SEASON’S GREETINGS

CREATE YOUR OWN LIVE WREATH TO WELCOME HOLIDAY CHEER

66 | triangle style

Does the girl next door always outshine you during the holidays with all of her décor? Now’s your chance to wow your neighbors and share your cheer. Seasonal, live wreaths are a wonderful way to connect with nature and fashion trimmings from your own landscape to use in celebration of what’s to come. While many think mostly of live wreaths around Christmas time, we think they’re more welcoming than a welcome mat all year long. Once you get the hang of how to create your own, you’ll want to make seasonal live wreaths come spring, summer and fall, too!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

A wire or straw frame, green floral wire, wreath pins, pruning shears, wire cutters, gardening gloves

CREATE YOUR OWN LIVE WREATH

1. Once you have all of your supplies from the store and your home, it’s time to step outside and get back in touch with nature. Walk through your own landscape, your culdesac or the neighborhood wooded areas with a basket, your gloves and pruning shears. You’re on the lookout for anything evergreen that strikes you. Juniper, boxwood, fir, spruce, pine, holly, magnolia and cedar are some of our favorites that stand the test of time. For added texture look for Harry Lauder’s walking stick or curly willow branches to include in the mix. The thing about this DIY project is that you get to pick what appeals to you! We suggest looking for a variety of textures, colors and shapes. Maybe a few of your picks have red berries while some include silver or variegated leaves and others are scattered with small cones. The choice is yours! While you’re gathering, it’s important to note that you are pruning while you’re cutting your trimmings so cut your hedges, trees and shrubs evenly with care. 2. Now, take your cuttings to a place you don’t mind getting a little dirty or spread newspaper over a table for easy cleanup and affix a piece of floral wire to the top of your form so it can hang once you’re finished.

3. Place your frame on the table and begin in the area where you applied the wire in step two with a grouping of three to five pieces of greenery. Place them flat on the frame with any needles or leaves facing upward. Apply a wreath pin over the stems about one inch from the base of twigs.

4. Use the same technique from step three, collecting another three to five cuttings and placing these so that they overlap and cover the wreath pin in the previous grouping. Continue this step remembering to use a variety of leaf textures and colors as you go until you’ve circled all the way back around to where you began and the frame is fully covered.

5. Now, take a look at your work of art. Is your live wreath inviting or does it need a little something else to spruce it up? This is the time to add any final touches. Perhaps yours could use pine cones or unique twigs from the curly willow tree in your yard. Add these strategically with your wreath pins. You may need to use wire as well. 6. Once your wreath is exactly what you want, it’s time to add a bow. While bows traditionally sit on the top or bottom of the wreath, affixing yours to the side or choosing to not use a bow at all, are all beautiful options for your very own holiday wreath. 7. Hang on your front door and begin your season’s greetings!

Now that you’ve got the hang of it, it’s time to deck the halls and door and walls! Not sure you can tackle this project on your own? Register online for one of Garden Supply Company’s Wreath Making workshops at gardensupplyco.com/calendar/. Classes are scheduled for December 2 and 9 and include wreath form, live greens and instruction from designers. Live wreaths are also available to order custom.

Hatch Your CREATIVITY At The Devilish Egg As an adult, it seems like the only time we get to work on an arts & crafts project is late at night, when the kids are asleep, and we’re doing - I mean, touching up - their last minute school assignment, due in the morning. Push aside the annoyance of knowing that their dioarama of a post-Plutonian solar system should have been done days ago, and you know what?…It’s really kinda fun! Theadrenaline rush of yielding sharp scissors, the zen-like calm of artistic freedom found inside a shoe box and the mild contact high from the fumes of rubber cement, are all sinfully liberating. Jill Rossi of TheDevilish Egg gets this! Her whimsical new “makerspace” and art studio in downtown Raleigh welcomes folks of all ages to come in and get their “crafty" on any time they’d like. 68 | triangle style

Written by Audrey D. Mark

My gal pal, Kathy Perkinson, and I decided to make a night of it as we signed up for a Devilish Egg class online. Tucked away in funky space downtown, off Fairview Road near Capital Boulevard, we arrived at Rossi's studio with a bottle of rosé and a healthy supply of Trader Joe’s snacks, (I believe that there are nutritional benefits in organic potato chips, but please, do not fact check me on this!). Rossi warmly greeted us with a smile and introduced the project of the evening. Kathy and I would be making adorable three dimensional holiday decorations out of buttons, paint and all the Mod Podge paste we wanted. Since it was Halloween, I chose a festive pumpkin, while Kathy sorted through and selected the witches hat. Rossi patiently took us step by step through the process - offering steady encouragement, even when we began to question our own fine motor skills and personal aesthetic. Chatting with Rossi while we worked was so easy to do in her bright, colorful and wellorganized studio. Rossi, a mom of two, and her husband, Greg, recently opened their doors to the public after many years of their friends asking for crafting classes. Rossi had been using this art studio for her own projects, when she saw there was a real need in the community for a creative safe space like TheDevilish Egg - which is named after an imaginary character she had designed as her playful mascot in grad school. A trained interior and furniture designer, Rossi explained that her creative drive was passed down to her from her mother. Now Rossi is committed to helping newly minted crafters to “get over their fear” of creating. As a parent and a teacher, she is concerned that many of us are so engrossed with our “screens,” that we are not allowing ourselves to have “the experience of physically moving things around in the world.” Rossi reminds that “for children, playing is learning” and she believes that this concept applies to adults, as well. Rossi’s class offerings such as soap and candle making, sewing, painting, and many more, can be found online at www.TheD vilishEgg.com. Sign up, then grab some friends, family, or even your favorite co-workers, and let the creativity flow. You can finish up the kid's homework later! 1310A Fairview Rd, Raleigh • 919-626-8585 www.thedevilishegg.com

TRAINER TALK

Written by: Will Mann, Vice President of Fitness, O2 Fitness

2018: THE YEAR TO COMMIT

IT’S TIME FOR A NEW YEAR AND YOU ARE DETERMINED TO MAKE THIS THE YEAR YOU GET IN SHAPE! THIS IS THE INTENT OF A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE EVERY JANUARY, YET EVERY YEAR MORE PEOPLE FAIL THAN SUCCEED AT MAKING ANY LASTING CHANGE. THERE ARE A LOT OF THEORIES TO EXPLAIN THIS PHENOMENON, BUT AT O2 FITNESS, WE CAN DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM IN ONE SIMPLE QUOTE—IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH YOUR COMMITMENT. This is exactly what happens to most people who set out to give it their all—they’re ready to sacrifice leisure time to workout, give up junk food for veggies, and the list goes on. They’re in a ‘fresh start’ state-of-mind with every intention of putting in the hard work. However, 2—, 3—, 4—months down the line, this mood fades. People start to think about how hard the process is, how long it will actually take to achieve their goals and how easy getting in shape used to be. The thought of having to continue to put in the work to maintain results seems even more daunting. This thinking quickly becomes overwhelming and people quit. Now that we’ve identified the problem, what can you do about it? The answer is simple, yet difficult. You must pro-actively set up a plan to overcome obstacles in order to stay truly committed.

HERE IS A LIST OF SOME OBSTACLES YOU MAY FACE…

• Perceived lack of time from work schedule or family life • Physical obstacles like pains, sickness, or injuries • Lack of an accountability system or support • Lack of knowledge on how to exercise safely and effectively • Low motivation or lack of enjoyment with exercise • Lack of willpower • Laziness (regarding of exercise) • Bad influences from friends and/or family • Poor movement patterns which will lead to pain, injuries, or make your workouts less effective

Most people simply seek out a written program that outlines what exercises to do. The problem is that this written program only overcomes one obstacle. You need much more than this if you want to truly be successful. Therefore, we developed our Program Design Sessions to help jump start your journey and set you on a manageable path for success.

70 | triangle style

THE DESIGN PROGRAM INCLUDES:

• Program Design Session 1: You’ll learn about you, uncover obstacles and create solutions that best fit your lifestyle • Program Design Session 2: We’ll develop a habitforming nutrition plan, find your true ideal heart rate zones for cardio training and take you through a resistance and mobility workout customized specifically to your wants and needs • Reassessment: If you decide to continue on your own, we can evaluate your results on an ongoing basis to determine adjustments that need to be made to your programming.

BELOW IS A LIST OF JUST A FEW WAYS WE TRY TO HELP PEOPLE GET OVER THEIR OBSTACLES.

Please note that everyone’s solution is different depending on your personal needs and wants. • Set a schedule for exercise and rest. We help you find and schedule the time to workout. This means outlining other time commitments that may have to be sacrificed. This shouldn’t be work or family, but there may be other activities we can replace with workouts. The chart to help carve out your availability is provided below. • Assess and correct your movement patterns. This makes you exercise more effectively while limiting your chance for injury or pain. It also makes sure current injuries feel the least amount of stress as possible. • Client support sheets These are weekly accountability check-ins for our “Primary Results Indicators” that are specifically designed for your goals. • Professional fitness support We recommend additional support and accountability from a personal trainer to guide and educate you along the way.

• Match your exercises with your training style and readiness level This helps ensure you enjoy your workouts and go at your own pace, whether that is slow and steady or a full-on sprint! You need to enjoy exercise if you are going to push through those hard times. • Group Fitness classes These community-oriented fitness opportunities keep you motivated. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people with similar goals really helps.

You simply need to have a system in place to successfully overcome obstacles, get help when you need it and not rely on moods or external factors like weddings, reunions, and other events to drive your motivation. Most people need help to be truly successful and that’s what we’re here for. At the very least, we’ll give you the knowledge and the tools you need to get it done! CLIENT TALK :

MICRONEEDLING WITH RÉJUVAPEN™ Facial lines, wrinkles, and crinkles are simply a part of life. If you’re starting to age or have any tissue scarring, you're probably waiting for that magical way to make your skin look healthy and happy again. Fortunately, there is a way! The RéJuvaPen is the newest up-and-coming device in the world of skin care. This microneedling tool triggers your natural healing process by creating controlled micro-channels. The body then responds by filling those channels with newly created collagen and elastin. Not only does it effectively reduce facial lines, it’s completely safe, non-invasive, and promotes long-term healing. To learn more about the RéJuvaPen procedure, we spoke to someone who had it done. 53-year-old Marsha, originally from Virginia but having lived several years in Boca Raton, Florida, was immersed in a city full of spas and cutting edge aesthetic procedures. In search of the best method of revitalization for her skin, Marsha discovered Cary Med Spa & Wellness, whose licensed medical aesthetician, Joanne Riney, is highly recommended for her microneedling and skin rejuvenation procedures. The medical spa, located in Cary offers a range of services from massage to hormone therapy to skin rejuvenation.

76 | triangle style

After seeing that this was the place to go, Marsha decided that she wanted to give it a shot, and we wanted to know all about her experience!

WHY WAS THIS PROCEDURE ATTRACTIVE TO YOU?

I started to notice that my skin was not as elastic as it once was. After turning 50, I started seeing a huge change in my skin. I tried collagen supplements, drank plenty of water and even the occasional skin peel, but nothing was hydrating my skin back into its smooth texture. This motivated me to pursue something more permanent. After hearing about microneedling, I did some research by reading articles and watching videos. I wanted to make sure I would get the results I wanted, and this seemed like a promising option!

DID THE PROCEDURE LIVE UP TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

Yes. There are some invasive procedures that take weeks of bedridden healing. Microneedling captured my attention because it was supposedly minimally invasive with little recuperation downtime. I’m definitely observing this in my post-procedure state. In terms of results, after my procedure I’m just starting to peel which is the beginning of the healing process. I know it can take several weeks to see results, so I’m hoping I'll be "plump and pretty" fairly soon!

WAS THE MICRONEEDLING PROCESS PAINFUL?

Nope, it didn’t hurt at all! Joanne, my aesthetician, used a numbing agent on my skin that made my face feel like it had Novocaine. I know that some procedures will keep you bedridden for days, so I loved microneedling because there was no downtime whatsoever. The entire procedure only took about an hour and a half. The only symptom postsurgery was that I looked very sunburnt...I even went straight to the grocery store! Right now I have a few pinprick red spots and my skin feels a little tight and dry, but there is no pain. This has truly been such an easy process!

DID YOU ENJOY YOUR ENVIRONMENT AND YOUR AESTHETICIAN?

I really liked Joanne because she was careful and very knowledgeable! Her professional demeanor showed that she had been doing this for a long time, which was a huge relief for me. Cary Med Spa and Wellness was also very clean and the staff helped me to feel at ease and comfortable. I loved that the staff at the spa works in coordination with other doctors, so they’ll refer you to another professional if they can’t help you to your standards.

CAN YOU SHARE ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE CONSIDERING THIS PROCEDURE FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Research, Research, Research! I cannot stress it enough. Choose your doctor and procedure very carefully. I would never let someone who has only taken one eight-hour course to perform on me, which happens surprisingly often. To avoid this and find the best possible solution, ask questions and double-check doctor qualifications. Determine your most ideal scenario, then narrow down three good options that will provide the results you want. Research those three and narrow it down to one using a list of pros and cons. Trust me, you’ll be very happy that you did this! 400 Ashville Ave Ste 200, Cary 919-473-6002, www.feelgoodaboutme.com

A PLACE IN THE SUN, based on An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser and starring a young Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters, is about George Eastman, a struggling young man who works as an elevator operator in Chicago and then goes to California to ask his rich uncle, whom he barely knows, to give him a job in his factory, which he does – but not before he tells George it is against company policy to date coworkers. Nonetheless, George soon begins a secret relationship with Alice, a girl who works alongside him on the assembly line. When George’s hard work gets him both a promotion and a relationship with Angela, the beautiful debutante he loved at first sight - daughter of his uncle’s friend - he tries to extricate himself from his association with Alice. However, Alice has absolutely no intention of letting George go - she is pregnant and expects him to marry her. Desperate, George doesn’t know what to do. All he knows is that his glittering dream of a better life may be ruined. WIVES AND DAUGHTERS, an engaging adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s book, is a BBC mini-series about love and family relationships against the background of the decline of the landed gentry and the rise of the middle class. On one hand, there is the squire and his two sons the elder is secretly married to a French woman and the younger is more interested in scientific research than in his father’s estate. And on the other hand, there is the respected country doctor, his sensible and virtuous daughter, his shallow but very pretty stepdaughter and of course his wife – a widow who dedicates herself to delicate manners and a search for a wealthy husband for her daughter. THE RED SHOES, exquisitely digitalized, is the one film that made people who weren’t interested in ballet stand up and cheer. Though the ballet is the centerpiece, this film is every bit as much about the people who are part of it: the composer, the obsessive director of the ballet company who commissions his score, and the ballerina whose passion is the sort that makes the red shoes keep on dancing. But it’s not that simple: when the dancer falls in love with the composer, one passion threatens to consume the other.
