HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A STYLIST?

I always had a passion for fashion and style. Everything started by styling family and friends just for fun.

WHO ARE YOUR TYPICAL CLIENTS?

As a Fashion Stylist I divide my work between Personal Styling and Commercial Styling.

For personal styling, I like to concentrate on styling women. My typical client is the multitasking woman who has a busy schedule of all the different roles in her daily life and who wants to look fabulous.

For commercial styling there is a wide variety. There are all kinds of projects that would include styling women, men, families or kids. To mention some examples, I can work on wardrobe styling for a big company, in other projects I can create looks for a model test shoot or style models for a new product launch.

DO YOU HAVE A STYLING PHILOSOPHY?

Yes. I am all about versatility. I always like to give my clients alternatives to use the same piece. I believe that adding garments to a wardrobe should go beyond that finding five items you already own that match your new piece. For example, a dress that is styled in a particular way can work as a top as well as a layering piece and then combined with existing pieces will give numerous options.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT BEING A STYLIST?

That everything about our job is very glamorous. We get those moments to dress up to the nines but when you are on set for long hours comfort is always the key.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CLASSIC COLOR COMBINATION

As much as I love and enjoy color blocking, I must confess that my favorite combination is the timeless black and white.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST SURPRISED BY THAT IS ACTUALLY

TRENDING RIGHT NOW?

Low rise bottoms. In my opinion they have never been flattering.

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE ONE'S STYLE?

I like to work closely with each client taking into account her style journey. Our style doesn't stay the same forever; we are evolving as we go through different life experiences. I listen attentively and ask questions to determine what are each client's preferences or dislikes. Additionally, there are some tasks that offer me support like questionnaires and moodboards.

IN THE TIME OF HACKS, WHAT IS ONE STYLING HACK THAT YOU USE OFTEN?

I use rubber bands to hold up the sleeves of my button up shirt or blazers.

DO YOU OFFER ON-GOING STYLING SERVICES?

Yes. For personal styling I have four packages that are tailored for certain styling needs. Currently I offer four packages for Personal Styling starting with Style in a Rush which provides the client quick access to everyday styling needs to Shop your Closet that is a complete wardrobe makeover.

MURDER AT MINNESOTA POINT

When a woman’s corpse turns up at Minnesota Point, in Duluth Minnesota, mystery does not end. Based on a true crime from 1894, this crime was labeled as ‘The Crime of the Century’. Hi Anna I have always been a little self conscious of my gummy smile and a friend told me that lip fillers can help alleviate this. Is this true? If so, can you tell me more about the process and how often would injections be needed? Thank you so very much, Monica.

Hi Monica! Thanks for your question! This is such a common concern we hear from our patients. A gummy smile occurs when you smile and your lip raises above your gums. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, sometimes it does make people feel self-conscious. The good news is that it’s easily treatable! I know we often think of using filler around the lips, but actually, a super effective treatment for a gummy smile is Botox®. A little bit of strategically placed Botox® can help relax the muscle, concealing your exposed gum. In addition to Botox®, fillers can be used to add more volume and definition to the lips, which can even further enhance your smile. Botox® will need to be repeated every 3 to 4 months, and lip filler typically lasts up to a year. You can expect the Botox® to kick in within 14 days; With lip filler, you’ll immediately notice some swelling and potentially some light bruising after your treatment that will dissipate after a few days. As always, the first step in getting started is scheduling a consultation with a seasoned nurse injector to help craft the exact plans for your goals. With 4 locations in the Triangle (including a new one in Wake Forest!), we are more than ready to help you look and feel your best at Synergy.

POPPYSEED MARKET

This colorful bistro located in North Raleigh has been serving up American fare to locals for over 15 years and they have indeed mastered a great salad. They use fresh, high quality ingredients & source locally when possible! Along with delicious salads, sandwiches, and entrees, they have grown even more and now have an expanded wine bar, local brews, and fresh cocktails. Seasonal tip: enjoy your meal out on their beautiful patio!

HAPPY + HALE

If you’re looking for a delicious salad bowl with an Instagram-worthy backdrop to photograph said salad bowl, look no further than Happy Hale. With locations all around the Triangle, this spot is easily accessible and absolutely delicious. They have incredible curated bowls as well as the option to build your own. Their acai bowl and smoothies are great as well! My favorite is the Chimichurri Steak Bowl. You can add greens so we will count that as a salad. ;)

<< Photo by Happy and Hale Photo by Poppyseed Market

TAZZA KITCHEN

You can’t go wrong with anything at Tazza Kitchen, especially when it comes to the salads. This spot with two locations in the Triangle, Raleigh and Cary, has been one of my favorites for YEARS. Here are a few seasonal salad creations available now: Crunchy Potato + Arugala, Kale + Chilies, and Strawberry

Romaine. I could go on and on, but their tacos, wood-fired pizzas, cocktails, and salads are all wonderful! If you’re looking for a cozy escape with a delicious salad, head over to Tazza Kitchen asap.

PRO’S EPICUREAN

You know I had to throw in a Downtown Cary gem! Pro’s Epicurean Market and Cafe is, “an eclectic market, café and wine bar featuring authentic Italian and French European cuisine that celebrates the passion and love for food and drink that has embraced our community and nation.” This cozy cafe is the perfect place to catch up with friends, have a great salad, and glass of wine! They have some delicious signature salads, as well as pasta, sandwiches, and so much more.

FARMSIDE KITCHEN

This Durham spot has me drooling every time I see a new post from them on Instagram. They take salad to a whole other level! Not only are they dedicated to serving up highly nutritious foods, but also partner with so many other local businesses which is what I love to see.

We work with local and regional farmers and purveyors who value healthy and sustainable sourcing and regenerative practices as much as we do - those who share our mission of making a positive impact in the world. We partner with folks like Hines Family Farms to source local produce, Simpli Good - a women-owned company that sources the best regeneratively grown quinoa around, and other local favorites like La Farm Bakery and Fullsteam Brewery, experts in their craft.from farmsidekitchen.com

Have I convinced you to add this to your to-try list yet? I hope so. :)

DRESS IT UP!

Buying a bottle of ranch or Italian dressing is an easy way of giving some pizzazz to your salads, but there’s another way — making fast and easy dressings that look and taste better than store-bought. Here are five salad dressings to make this summer from scratch!

DON’T FEEL LIKE COOKING?

We’ve got your back with great recommendations for each category.

Citrus Vinaigrette

All vinaigrettes contain oil and some acidic ingredient, often vinegar. The thing is, vinegar is sometimes too tart, especially for delicate salads or grilled veggies. That’s where the citrus vinaigrette comes in. Combine three parts of olive oil with one part of orange juice and another of lemon juice and make a milder vinaigrette with a lovely fruity personality.

Adding citrus zest to this dressing brings aromatic complexity and color to the table. Fresh herbs are particularly compatible with this type of dressing, so experiment with dill or basil and find the right combination for you.

BUY INSTEAD:

Newman's Own Lemon Basil Vinaigrette is a great example of this citrusy dressing; it doesn’t contain additives or conservatives and the profits go to charity!

Classic Balsamic Vinaigrette

There’s nothing a classic vinaigrette can’t do. It will elevate the flavor of all types of food, and not just salads. The golden ratio for vinaigrettes is three parts of extra virgin olive oil for every one part of balsamic vinegar. Season your dressing with a pinch of salt and pepper to round it up; however, the sky’s the limit, so add dried herbs or crushed garlic to your dressing for extra flavor.

BUY INSTEAD:

Trader Joe’s Balsamic Vinaigrette is as good as they come; made with authentic winebased vinegar, red wine, cider and a pinch of paprika. If you’re in luck, you’ll find a small bottle of this tasty dressing for two bucks.

Asian Dressing

Four parts rice vinegar, two parts soy sauce and one part toasted sesame oil come together for an exciting Asian-inspired dressing that tastes good on greens and tossed noodles. The secret is adding a minced garlic clove for every half a cup of dressing. Since soy sauce is already salty, this one does not need salt, and a dollop of Teriyaki sauce will give your dressing intense umami flavors and an unbeatable glossiness. Dip spring rolls in this one, or toss a noodle salad with this tasty dressing — it’s a game changer.

BUY INSTEAD:

Maggie Gin's Salad

Dressing is two-inone; it’s also a lovely chicken marinade! There’s lots of flavor inside this peculiar bottle, so give an Asian feel to your salads, or cook yourself a stir-fry; this sticky dressing can do it all.

Homemade Ranch

Dijon Mustard Dressing

Mustard dressings are classic too, and it’s because mustard has an intense flavor with no comparison — what mild salads need to shine. Mustard alone has no place in a salad bowl, though; you must combine it with honey to balance its pungency. There are many ways of making this golden dressing, but I love the combination of two parts apple cider vinegar, one part Dijon mustard and one part maple syrup, the good stuff (regular honey works, too!). Use other vinegar and sweeteners for different results, and if you like your dressings grainy, use whole-grain Dijon mustard — the finest is made with a splash of white wine!

BUY INSTEAD: Interestingly, Amazon’s own brand, Happy Belly, is a great choice for this mustardy dressing. This honey-mustard dressing is actually made with Dijon mustard, and it’s pretty well balanced, that if you like your dressings spicy.

Finally, everyone’s favorite creamy dressing, but this time, done right — at home. This one is tricky but totally worth it! Combine equal parts of sour cream and buttermilk, and stir in our special dry ranch mix — equal parts of onion powder, garlic powder, dried dill and parsley. Add fresh chives if you have any, and an optional teaspoon of mustard can give an extra dimension to this creamy dressing. Taste and season with salt and pepper — you know what to do with this one, add it to everything! Try these salad dressings for summer, and let me know what you think!

BUY INSTEAD:

For this classic, I found a healty-ish alternative that tastes as good as better-known brands. Skinnygirl Fat-Free Salad Dressing is a sugar-free buttermilk ranch. There’s no soy in this one either, so it’s relatively natural. It’s also deliciously creamy and silky. Now, go toss yourself a salad!

Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve

Filled with shade during the summer months and rich with color in the fall, Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve provides an easy, family-friendly way to escape to the outdoors in Cary. The 140-acre park—established 40 years ago and named for the atypical group of nearly 200 Eastern Hemlock trees that can be found here—is highlighted by approximately three miles of mulch-covered walking and hiking trails that lead to a series of small overlooks.

The Chestnut Oak Loop trail—traversing 1.2 miles of the hilly (but not difficult) side of the park—winds through the upland forest with ridges, ravines and creeks, passing by three overlook areas that provide views over the bluffs and bench seating for moments of solitude. The Swift Creek Loop Trail is a short, 0.8mile section of mulched paths and wooden boardwalks that is mostly flat with a set of 100 stairs that have to be taken down and then up on your return. Visitors with limited mobility can reach an overlook on the Swift Creek Loop Trail before reaching the stairs.

The 3,700-square-foot Stevens Nature Center provides interactive, educational nature exhibits and historical exhibits from the Piedmont of N.C., plus provides nature interpretation and environmental education programs for all ages throughout the year.

Total mileage: Approximately three miles

Best for: Leisurely walks; summer shade; fall foliage; families; dogs on short leashes; small crowds.

Lake Crabtree County Park

Established as the Raleigh area's first county park, Lake Crabtree County Park offers hiking, single-track mountain biking, seasonal boat rentals, playgrounds and more in a location that sits between Cary, Morrisville and Raleigh (with William B. Umstead State Park sitting a stone's throw away). Open to foot traffic only for the majority of the hike, the Lake Trail is a six-mile loop that meanders its way around the 520-acre lake, sometimes coming just a few feet from the water and other times veering farther from the shore.

While about half your time is spent in the woods where you won't find much of a crowd, the other half puts you on a new stretch of paved greenway that sees more cyclists, families and pets enjoying the outdoors (the greenway also passes over a nearly 500-foot-long bridge that crosses the lake). A large open field on the wooded side sits against the lake, making for tons of room for picnics and recreation.

Total mileage:The Lake Trail is a six-mile loop, and another 10 miles of multi-use paths can be explored (but keep a heads up for mountain bikers)

Best for: Woodsy hiking; families; picnics; cycling on the greenway; access to Umstead State Park

Lake Johnson Park

Located near North Carolina State University, Lake Johnson Park is a popular spot for students and professionals to get some exercise—a paved, three-mile greenway loop, plus two miles of unpaved trails, draws lots of joggers and walkers (and dogs, too!). The paved section, east of the boathouse, packs some punchy hills and tends to draw a bigger crowd. The unpaved section, west of the boathouse, is flatter but great for hikers looking for a quieter adventure. Bikes are allowed on both sections of the mostly-shaded trails, but can't complete the full loop on the unpaved side because of an environmentally-sensitive area (runners and hikers are still able to complete the loop).

The most recognizable feature of the park is the 700-foot-long boardwalk that cuts directly across the center of the lake, often busy with people dangling fishing poles over the side or watching kayakers and pedal boats circle the 150-acre body of water.

On the northern end of the lake, the east loop of the trail can connect with the Walnut Creek Greenway which gives you access to North Carolina State University's Centennial Campus (two miles away), Dorothea Dix Park (3.5 miles), downtown Raleigh (five miles) and the Neuse River Greenway Trail (13 miles)—lots of great options for more exploring!

Total mileage: Approximately a 2.5mile loop around the outer trails of the park; five total miles of trails

Best for: Trail running; leisurely walks; easy dog-friendly hiking

Durant Nature Preserve

This 237-acre nature preserve in North Raleigh offers five miles of lesser-trafficked, mostly unpaved hiking trails that loop through heavily wooded areas around two lakes in the center of the park (not challenging terrain, but one of our top choices for peaceful outdoor exploring). Dog- and kid-friendly, portions of the trails are also open to mountain bikes. The park also offers amenities including a fishing pier, playground, sand volleyball court, bird and butterfly gardens, picnic areas and more.

Total mileage: Approximately a 2.5-mile loop around the outer trails of the park; five total miles of trails

Best for: Trail running; leisurely walks; easy dog-friendly hiking

William B. Umstead State Park

One of N.C.’s most-visited state parks, William B. Umstead State Park remains a peaceful getaway thanks to its sheer size—more than 5,000 acres of forest, trails and lakes sit on the edge of Raleigh, Cary and Morrisville. With 13 miles of multi-use trails that follow a series of rolling hills (perfect for horseback riding, jogging and cycling) and 22 miles of dedicated hiking trails, this is a must-hit destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Cyclists are drawn to Umstead for the gravel riding—the multi-use paths are a mixture of hardpacked dirt surfaces along with some fairly rocky gravel sections among the handful of trails that are open to bikes. No paved roads will be found here, and that's part of the appeal. You'll see all types of rides tackling the terrain inside Umstead, from fullsuspension mountain bikes to trendy, new gravel bikes (road bikes with bigger tires, in simple terms). The important thing is you'll want tires that are, at minimum, 32mm in width (bigger will be better) to comfortably handle the bumpy surface.

One favorite way to take advantage of the multi-use trails for both cyclists and runners is to park your vehicle at the Old Reedy Creek Rd. trailhead (plenty of parking spots, bathrooms, water fountains and bike repair tools are on hand here), head just a couple hundred yards up the short hill to the park entrance and follow the Reedy Creek Trail on a straight shot until you hit the far end of the park— that's a total of five miles one way. From there, either head back the way you came or turn left to tackle the South and North Turkey Creek Trails (warning: brutally steep in a couple sections!) which will add an additional six miles or so to your route before heading back to your starting point

Hikers and singletrack runners have plenty of options, too, starting with Sycamore Trail, a moderately easy loop trail with plenty of elevation changes and lots of shade that runs beside Sycamore Creek for a total of 7.2 miles and has the option to connect to many other trails along the way

Total mileage: As much or as little as you like; trails range from one mile to seven miles and can be mixed and matched.

Best for: Workouts; trail running; hiking; gravel riding/mountain biking; hills; dogs; families; shade

MICHAEL RICHARDS: ARE YOU DOWN?

March 4–July 23, 2023

2110 Blue Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607

(919) 839-6262

ncartmuseum.org

Michael Richards’s visionary sculptures and drawings, created between 1990 and 2001, engage Blackness, flight, diaspora, spirituality, police brutality, and monuments in his largest retrospective to date.

Michael Richards: Are You Down? takes its name from one of the last artworks the artist created.

In his sculptures and installations, Richards gestures toward both repression and reprieve from social injustices and the simultaneous possibilities of uplift and downfall, often in the context of the historic and ongoing oppression of Black people. Flight and aviation were central themes for Richards as an exploration of freedom and escape, ascendance and descent. These themes are especially evident in Richards’s engagement with the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, including his well-known sculpture Tar Baby vs. St. Sebastian (1999)—a version of which has been on continuous display at the NCMA since 2003.

KITCHEN HACKS

From seriously bad breath to soggy lettuce to dangerously dirty appliances. These quick and easy food hacks will leave you wondering, "Why didn't I think of that?"

HASSLE-FREE METHOD

USE THIS

TO CLEAN YOUR BLENDER. Raise your hand if you've ever cut your finger on the blades of your blender while you've been trying to clean it. There's an easier way to clean this essential kitchen tool. Immediately after pouring out the food you want to eat, fill the blender with warm soapy water, put the lid back on and give it a whirl. That will clean the bowl and the blades while keeping your fingers safe. Avoid using hot water as too much pressure will build up and you may end up with a soapy explosion all over your kitchen!

SLICE STEAK FRIES Apple slicers aren’t just for apples! Cut one end of the potato for stability then push it through an apple slicer and voilà...perfect potato wedges! Works great with sweet potatoes too!

MORE JUICE / LESS SQUEEZE

Next time you need fresh lemon juice, try this cool hack. Microwave a lemon for 7-10 seconds. after cooling, give a quick roll on the counter then squeeze...you’ll get more juice with way less effort!

FORGOT YOUR BREATH MINTS? Reach for an apple! Previously, fresh parsley was recommended as the best emergency breath freshener when you can't brush your teeth or pop a breath mint. However, more and more people are turning to apples instead. Grab one from the fruit basket and bite in to fight bad breath caused by garlic, onions and even tuna.

TURN NACHO TOPPINGS INTO A TACO. Everyone loves nachos, but nobody likes scraping the baked-on cheese off the baking dish they used to cook their nachos. Save your cookware, and your favorite toppings, by laying a large flat tortilla on the baking sheet before you add the nachos and your toppings. The tortilla will catch any cheese, meat or vegetables that fall off the nachos, turning them into an instant taco.

KEEP ICECREAM FROM MELTING BUBBLE WRAP

Who knew?? Bubble wrap is also acts as an insulator. While on the road, keep your favorite pint from melting by wrapping it in plastic bubble wrap. It’ll stay firm longer!

OPEN THE MOST RESISTANT JAR IN SECONDS.

Don't break your wrists trying to open that jar of pasta sauce. Slip on a pair of yellow rubber kitchen gloves (even one will do), and you'll get the grip that you need right away. If you don't have any gloves, you can get a similar effect by wrapping an elastic band around the lid.

Heat your food evenly in microwave.the

Is there anything worse than taking a bowl of pasta or plate of vegetables out of the microwave, only to find some parts are scalding while others are still freezing? Heat your food through evenly the first time by putting it on the plate in the shape of a ring with a hole in the middle. This arrangement eliminates the center, which is usually the part that doesn't get heated thoroughly.

Revive limp leafy greens.

It's easy to forget about that head of lettuce or bunch of cilantro at the back of your fridge. Often, when you finally remember it's there, the stems are droopy, and the leaves seem limp. Stop! Don't throw those greens in the compost! Instead, cut off the bottom end of the stems, place the greens into a glass (or vase, if they're large) filled with icy cold water and put them back in the fridge for a few hours. You'll see a vast improvement in color, texture, and shape.

Audrey’s mother, Louisa, believed childhood should be a time for jumping in mud puddles and playing make-believe. As she sometimes said, “Childhood would be over soon enough.”

On the other hand, Louisa believed that motherhood was a time to lead, to set an example for her children: to inconspicuously demonstrate concern for others, proper decorum, and a healthy exposure to intellectual pursuits and the arts. And, of course, having faith in God and pursuing good health by an avid interest in vigorous exercise were simply assumed.

Audrey understood her mother. Therefore, she delighted in vigorously riding her bicycle around Couchiching Park with her pal Jean Town, reading books about Scotland, castles, and ladies in distress, and collecting sterling silver and bone china cups --all which contributed to a well-rounded youth.

Not to be forgotten however were Audrey’s individual pursuits. She skated with her friends in winter, starred in her high school's Gilbert and Sullivan musicals, fussed over her Collie, trained her pet crow, and swam in Lake Couchiching in the summer. But most of all, she enjoyed those wild, wind in your hair bike rides with Jean Town.

In contrast, Herb Leigh, Audrey’s father, was a quiet man, a sentimental man, one who would sit on his porch while watching the sun set, and all the while, as if talking to himself, spoke of his deeply loved mother and her hard working Scottish ancestors.

"We were all good looking men, weren't we." And they were - exceptionally so. Appearances mattered to Herb. Whether plastering a wall or standing on a ladder in a pretty house he was building, Herb wore a perfectly pressed white shirt. Nonetheless,

these attributes didn't preclude his strong opinions on politics, the price of milk, and the Bible, especially the Bible.

In spite of their different parenting styles, both of Audrey’s parents realized that she, too, had a mind of her own. For instance, when she told them she was going to work at F.W. Woolworth’s five and dime after school, they said, “If you insist.”

Nor was she intimidated by the good-looking, but definitely engaged, assistant manager, Doug Scott, when he asked her for a date. "Ask me when you're free,” she responded. And so he did. On the 16th of June, 1941, after she finished her Latin final that morning, it was just a few hours later, that she and Doug got married.

Yet, World War II was in full force at the time, and Doug, knowing his friends were putting their lives on the line, while he was not, joined the R.C.A.F. When the war was over, however, Woolworth rehired him, and several promotions followed.

In 1958, Doug went into business for himself- it was slow going at first, but flourishing soon thereafter. Confident their business was now on solid footing, they looked for a home in the country. A somewhat rundown house caught their eye. Its stone exterior, circular driveway, numerous flower gardens, and three working fireplaces were impressive despite their disrepair. Yet, it was the authentic 1800s mill and pub next door to it, on the other side of the woods, that stole Audrey's heart.

Everything, its surroundings and the house itself sparked her imagination. What fun she would have redoing the house, planting daffodils on the hill and, in consideration of its stone exterior, and in honor of her Scottish ancestors, Audrey named her house Glencairn.

From that time forward, Glencairn became the center of her life. From grandchildren in the playroom upstairs, sons-in-law leaning over the pool table in the basement, five daughters gossiping over tea at the dining room table, as well as Audrey's many friends jumping in and out of the pool outside, the doors of Glencairn were always open.

As her mother before her, Audrey thought childhood should be fun, though I can't say I approved of the way she expressed it. Speeding up hills and around curves on her way to the farmer's market, she told my daughter, "We have all the fun and don't have to spend a dime." When they returned, my daughter said, "Grandma's really cool"

Doug, though impressed by Audrey's spontaneity, did his best to keep her feet on the ground. Even so, he realized she would always be a bit of a daredevil, so he did the sensible thing; he booked a trip down the Amazon, took her on holidays all over the world - to Italy, Spain, Paris, and so forth. Audrey always came back with interesting tales to tell.

Even so, there were bound to be moments of regret and insecurity. One particular day stands out in my mind. Noticing my sisters

weren’t listening to her repeat one of her more interesting tales, my sisters were talking about the books they read, and the colleges they attended. The look on Audrey’s face, the raw vulnerability broke my heart. Looking in my direction, however, she pulled herself together, as if readying for a part in one of her Gilbert and Sullivan plays. Later that week, she came home with a book that detailed a lifelong reading plan. One by one, she followed their suggestions: reading Aristotle from cover to cover, rather than the summaries most colleges offer.

But no matter what travels Audrey experienced in the books she read or in her travels with Doug, nothing surpassed her love for the Orillia that used to be. So she introduced her daughters to what did remain: Camp Summerland, on the other side of the lake, and everyone's favorite, the park by Lake Couchiching. From that time forward, the whole family looked forward to spending summers in Orillia.

And as Audrey’s children approached their teen age years, Louisa changed her focustelling her grandchildren fascinating tales of their own past - their ancestors. Men and women from England, Ireland, and Scotland, even Quakers from New York, who left their homes behind, perhaps taking with them a family Bible, a drawing by a child or a heartfelt letter from a special friend.

As the land behind them grew distant, many a prayer would have been said - praying for God’s guidance on this courageous, often dangerous, journey. All in the hope of a better life in a land as yet unknown. Their long voyage over, walking through a dense forest, they found a pretty lake, and it was there, on Lake Couchiching, that they built their town.

Oh so many generations later, in April of 2000, all five children and numerous grandchildren stood around Audrey’s bed. It was a momentous, tortuous, endearing experience. True to form, the last words Audrey spoke were from Shakespeare. "Let me not linger upon the order of my going." And when I knew she had passed, I had a vision of her, on her bicycle riding up and off over the rainbow, saying "I'm out of here." And I knew she was going back to Orillia, back to that child-bride who loved to ride her bicycle around the lake with her pal, Jean Town.
