A PLACE IN THE SUN, based on An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser and starring a young Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters, is about George Eastman, a struggling young man who works as an elevator operator in Chicago and then goes to California to ask his rich uncle, whom he barely knows, to give him a job in his factory, which he does – but not before he tells George it is against company policy to date coworkers. Nonetheless, George soon begins a secret relationship with Alice, a girl who works alongside him on the assembly line. When George’s hard work gets him both a promotion and a relationship with Angela, the beautiful debutante he loved at first sight - daughter of his uncle’s friend - he tries to extricate himself from his association with Alice. However, Alice has absolutely no intention of letting George go - she is pregnant and expects him to marry her. Desperate, George doesn’t know what to do. All he knows is that his glittering dream of a better life may be ruined. WIVES AND DAUGHTERS, an engaging adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s book, is a BBC mini-series about love and family relationships against the background of the decline of the landed gentry and the rise of the middle class. On one hand, there is the squire and his two sons the elder is secretly married to a French woman and the younger is more interested in scientific research than in his father’s estate. And on the other hand, there is the respected country doctor, his sensible and virtuous daughter, his shallow but very pretty stepdaughter and of course his wife – a widow who dedicates herself to delicate manners and a search for a wealthy husband for her daughter. THE RED SHOES, exquisitely digitalized, is the one film that made people who weren’t interested in ballet stand up and cheer. Though the ballet is the centerpiece, this film is every bit as much about the people who are part of it: the composer, the obsessive director of the ballet company who commissions his score, and the ballerina whose passion is the sort that makes the red shoes keep on dancing. But it’s not that simple: when the dancer falls in love with the composer, one passion threatens to consume the other.
