Ten Things Massage Therapists Need to Get Off Their Chests 1) We are not masseuses! Massage parlours have been outdated since long back, and do not have a great reputation of being, well...legal. We didn’t take out student loans and complete more than 850 hours of training to be associated with illegal practices, and get jokes about, “happy endings”. 2) We don’t mind if you haven’t shaved your legs. Our main concern is your overall recovery from injuries and maintenance of health. A little bit of leg hair is the least of our worries, as long as you’re reasonably clean, we have no complaints here. 3) DO. YOUR. STRETCHES...and your hydrotherapy, and your home care, following the clues here? As much as we would love to follow you about and give you treatment and remind you of your therapeutic treatment all day long, sadly we can’t. RMT’s give you homework designed along with your treatment plan. Your health is your hands once you leave our care, and if you want to recover, you need to do your homework. 4) We do not judge. Your body is your body, and who are we to say any different? Just because you don’t look like a fake airbrushed model, doesn’t mean we expect you to. There is no need to be insecure about your body. We only want your body to be: male, female, young, old, but most importantly: healthy. Anything else such as: cellulite, moles, dry skin, deformities, etc. does not scare or deter us from helping you. We are here as a vessel of health, not to judge. 5) There is absolutely no obligation to talk to us during a massage. If talking helps you relax, then go ahead and talk our ears off. Otherwise, relax and drift off to your comfy space. 6) Don’t be butt shy. We view glutes as a big muscle, not as a object of desire. We observe your body in a clinical sense, and if you have pain in your lower back, legs, hips, or glutes, don’t be shy, we’re here to help, not judge your bum. 7) Please notify us if you have had a change in your medical condition since you had seen us last. It is of the utmost importance you do so. If you happen to mention halfway through a deep tissue massage that you are taking medication that causes blood thinning, alarm bells will be going off in our heads. 8) Bodily functions are normal, and are actually caused by a state of relaxation by our treatments. Stomach grumbling and growling, snoring, and flatulence is normal. It doesn’t happen all the time, but if it does happen it is a good sign that you are relaxed.
