If you have spent any amount of time in the Arts District of Downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, then you have undoubtedly perused

by Body and Soul. Afro-centric jewelry, sculptures, scarves, Barack Obama coin bank. Yes, you have seen it. A unique store to say the least. But, what do you know about Body and Soul? Unless you are a regular, then we will venture to say you do not know enough about it.

Did you know that the store just celebrated their 14th anniversary? Yes, the store has been around since 2003. Did you know that it is four stores in one? Four different concepts contained within one large store’s walls. Owner Dana Suggs gave a tour and explained all of the concepts.

First, there is the boutique area. In this area, you will find jewelry, accessories and other items from all over the world. Dana encourages her patrons to pick up the items, feel them, be in touch with them.

She explained that she wanted her customers to feel at home and free to explore.

There is a collection of scarves from various countries, made of various materials, which would make the perfect accompaniment to you or someone you love’s ensemble.

The next section of the store is the “Book Room.” This room is full of books that were written by African American authors for everyone’s enjoyment; not just African

American readers. However, as Dana explained, “when I was a kid it was hard to find books that people of my complexion could identify with.” There are children’s books, adult biographies and autobiographies, fiction and non-fiction, as well as poetry – especially the works of famous Winston-Salemite, Maya Angelou. You would be hard pressed to find a similar bookstore in the area.

Dana then showed off the Skincare and Aromatherapy Area. Here you will find the largest selection, 14 different scents, of Shea Butter products, in bar soap form as well as in skin creams and lotions. When you walk into Body and Soul, you immediately smell sandalwood incense, which you can purchase along with various other scents and aromas.

The final “store” is the African-inspired Art Gallery. There are sculptures, paintings, masks, stools, tapestries, and other home furnishings in the gallery that would be a great addition to many rooms in your house or in your office. The pieces are definitely impressive and you can actually feel the creativity that fills the room. Most of the items are from Africa, but some of the wares are inspired pieces made elsewhere, including here. Body and Soul has gift certificates for you to give your friends or family that may be hard to buy for. Let them pick out their own “inspiration.”

Dana has done a fantastic job in creating a comfortable atmosphere for patrons of all races to come, buy quality products and enjoy cultural riches that inspire not only happiness but creativity and imagination.

From the wares to the ambiance to the World Music playing throughout the store, you will have an enjoyable experience.

Dana, a Queens, New York Native moved here over 20 years ago with an advertising background. She was noticing a void where African American heritage could be celebrated by all. She says if you were to visit her house, it would be very much like her store and she wanted to bring that to Winston-Salem. She picked the Arts District to be the place for her vision to become a reality.The community has been very supportive and she considers the store to be a success. While researching to write this article, I can assure you, she is open, welcoming and accommodating. I would call that successful.

Meet Eugene and Bobbie Baker; owners of Tiquers Alley, one of the latest treasures in beautiful, historic downtown Kernersville, NC. As I interviewed them, folks just stopped in to chat for a while. Some made purchases. Others brought gifts. Tiquers Alley is warm like that ...and inviting.

The Bakers have raised an amazing family after they retired, they envisioned spending more time with one another. Too vibrant to sit still, after retirement, they decided on a joint venture to give them more “together time”. They combined their skills and talents, plunged into the housing market and carved a niche for themselves in property management. They didn’t stop there. In 2007, Mark Grohman looked around the area his restaurant, Meridian Restaurant, was located and realized there was something missing. What this town needed was a food festival. How about a seafood festival? There was nothing like that around. Before the food truck extravaganza on Burke Street, before the hot sauce

culinary showcase, there was the Meridian Seafood Festival.

The event, which is the 10th Annual, coincides with this year being Meridian’s tenth year in business and will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017, from noon until 10 pm. In addition to the food, there will

Giving Back from BEER

Granite Falls Brewing Company, located in… you guessed it, Granite Falls, a small town in western NC. It was launched in 2013 and have been making quality brew ever since. Their facility is located in a historic building complex over 110 years old. The owners wanted to have beers that were affordable but also cutting-edge flavors and style changers.

Perhaps one of the coolest aspects of what the brewery does is donate a certain portion of the profits from some of their beers to various causes. The beer I’m talking about this month is called Canis Rouge, which translates to Red Wolf. The beer is part of Granite Falls’ NC Wild Collection and a percentage of the Canis Rogue sales will go to Red Wolf Coalition, a non-profit based out of Columbia, North Carolina.

The Red Wolf Coalition advocates for the long-term survival of red wolf populations by teaching about the red wolf and by fostering public involvement in red wolf conservation. There are only about 300 red wolves right now.

The Canis Rouge is a Blood Orange Sahti.

Farmhouse Ale that comes from old Finland. It was filtered through juniper twigs and that flavor passed on to the beer, kind of like an infusion. It’s more in the style of gosé or sour, but not exactly. It’s got sour qualities but it isn’t the same.

Head brewer Joseph Ackerman infuses the Granite Falls version with Blood Orange to put their own twist on the beer. Not many places in the USA are making Sahti.

I had this on The Less Desirables and Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking. It had a very interesting flavor that was sour and salty but you can taste “gin-like” remnants of the juniper berries. The blood orange adds a little bitterness, but also a little sweet; definitely refreshing. It’s a taste you may have to get accustomed to, so be warned it’s not traditional. If you like sours and gosés you may like this one. I liked it but can’t a lot at once. It’s 7.6% ABV. I rated it 4 out of 5 stars.

Entertainment throughout the day will include Josh & Jordan, Wyndy Trail Travelers, Brave World, Undercover and the headliner, Rhythm Station which will be on stage from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Covers, originals, acoustic and full band; you get many styles and variety in the music category.

This is also the tenth year for Meridian Restaurant, itself. Chef Mark intention was to create an upscale restaurant with casual elegance in a nonpretentious atmosphere.

Taking lessons from his youth, Mark insists on sustainability and openness while maintaining a high standard of excellence for patrons of Meridian.
