The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Memorial Cup Presented by Kia, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.

MESSAGE FROM WHL COMMISSIONER RON ROBISON WELCOME TO THE 2019-20 WHL SEASON FROM WHL COMMISSIONER RON ROBISON Calgary, Alta. – The dawn of a new Western Hockey League season is here and we are thrilled to be witness to the world’s premier junior hockey players as they showcase their talents in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. This marks the 54 th season in WHL history, and as always, the WHL Player Experience is paramount for WHL Clubs. On and off the ice, WHL Clubs are entrenched in ensuring WHL players receive world-class coaching and competition together with North America’s most comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program. The WHL’s Players First support services continue to allow players to develop in a safe and positive environment. In the 25 th year of the WHL Scholarship, records were shattered for the sixth consecutive season, as 405 WHL graduates accessed their WHL Scholarship during the 2018-19 academic year. The WHL Scholarship continues to provide an unparalleled educational avenue for WHL graduates driven to achieve their academic goals. Of the 405 WHL graduates who accessed their WHL Scholarship, close to 200 continued their hockey development by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level this past season. The 2019 NHL Draft also provided reason for celebration as 28 WHL players, including seven in the first round, heard their name called on home ice in Vancouver. The 28 WHL players represent the largest number of players selected from any one developmental league in the world at the 2019 NHL Draft, reaffirming the WHL’s position as a leading producer of NHL talent. The 2019-20 WHL season will see many high calibre events on display in WHL territory. The WHL Cup will return to Calgary in October 2019, showcasing the top prospects in the system from the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft class. The 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series lands in Saskatoon and Prince Albert in November, as Team WHL faces the Russian National Team in a preview of the 2020 World Junior Championship. Finally, the Memorial Cup, Presented by Kia, returns to Western Canada for the third time in five years, as the Canadian Hockey League’s best from the WHL, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Ontario Hockey League take to the ice in Kelowna in May 2020. The WHL is very fortunate to have some of the most loyal fans in the game. Through your passion and loyalty, combined with the ongoing support of our corporate partners, broadcasters, and media, the WHL is once again in a position to provide our players with an unmatched world class experience. The 2019-20 WHL season is poised to be thrilling as our 22 member Clubs compete for a playoff berth and opportunity to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup. We look forward to another very exciting season of WHL hockey as you cheer on your favourite Club throughout the season. About the Western Hockey League Regarded as the world’s finest development league for junior hockey players, the Western Hockey League (WHL) head office is based in Calgary, Alberta. The WHL consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 located in Western Canada and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. A member of the Canadian Hockey League, the WHL has been a leading supplier of talent for the National Hockey League for over 50 years. The WHL is also the leading provider of hockey scholarships with over 350 graduates each year receiving WHL Scholarships to pursue a post-secondary education of their choice. Each season, WHL players also form the nucleus of Canada’s National Junior Hockey Team. Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League

#34 | SASHA MUTALA The Colorado Avalanche prospect set a new career high this year with 27 goals and 66 points. His six game point streak was snapped on Wednesday against the Silvertips. He is averaging over four shots a game in February.

NEWS AND NOTES X MARKS THE SPOT... The Winterhawks became the first WHL team to clinch a spot in the 2020 WHL playoffs when they earned a point in an overtime loss to Spokane on February 4. It’s the Hawks 11th straight trips to the postseason. Last year, the Prince Albert Raiders were the first to clinch a playoff spot on February 5 and they won the Ed Chynoweth Cup. In total, 12 WHL teams have clinched a playoff spot. SENSATIONAL SETH... Winterhawks second year forward Seth Jarvis has notched 51 points (21G-30A) in 20 games in 2020, three times earning WHL On the Run Player of the Week honors. ESPN’s Chris Peters tabbed Jarvis as the 20th best prospect available for the 2020 NHL Draft, TSN’s Bob McKenzie recently ranked No.24 as the 24th best prospect on his 2020 NHL Draft list and The Athletic nabbed him 26th. In 124 career regular season games, he has 127 points (52G-75A) and currently sits second place in WHL scoring. Jarvis, a former 11th overall Bantam pick, recently notched his 50th assist of the season, becoming the 18th Winterhawk to reach that point during his 17-year-old season. Ten of the previous 16 were drafted in the first round of the NHL Draft and four were second round picks. Jarvis, currently on pace for over 100 points, is looking to become the first WHL player since Nolan Patrick (Brandon Wheat Kings, 2015-16) to reach the century mark during his 17 year old season. The Winnipeg native also participated in the 2020 CHL/NHL Top Prospect game in Hamilton, Ontario and was the 17th Winterhawk to participate in the event this decade, the first since Henri Jokiharju and Cody Glass attended in 2017. JOHNNY ON THE SPOT... Johnny Ludvig, a Kamloops, B.C. product, leaped to the top of the Western Conference in defensive points (58) and shots (197). Ludvig is a point-per-game player this season, sits second in power play goals (9) among defensemen and third in +/- rating (+41). The Portland Winterhawks captain has exploded offensively making up over 33 percent of the Hawks defensive scoring. Portland ranks third in the WHL with 151 points generated from its defensemen. USPORTS UPDATE... Defenseman Shaun Dosanjh (Winterhawks 2016-17) is playing for the University of British Columbia in the Canada West Final against the Saskatchewan Huskies in a best-of-three series this weekend. Adam Henry (Winterhawks 2014-15) was named a Canada West First Team All-Star, Top Defenseman and Student Athlete Community Service award recipient after completing his fifth season with the University of Manitoba. The Bisons captain tallied 92 points in 138 Canada West games and is now off to compete for the Fort Wayne Komets, ECHL affiliates of the Vegas Golden Knights. He got his degree in management.
