ABOUT THE WHL
Central Division Calgary Hitmen Edmonton Oil Kings Lethbridge Hurricanes Medicine Hat Tigers Red Deer Rebels Swift Current Broncos
The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Memorial Cup Presented by Kia, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.
MESSAGE FROM WHL COMMISSIONER RON ROBISON WELCOME TO THE 2019-20 WHL SEASON FROM WHL COMMISSIONER RON ROBISON Calgary, Alta. – The dawn of a new Western Hockey League season is here and we are thrilled to be witness to the world’s premier junior hockey players as they showcase their talents in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. This marks the 54 th season in WHL history, and as always, the WHL Player Experience is paramount for WHL Clubs. On and off the ice, WHL Clubs are entrenched in ensuring WHL players receive world-class coaching and competition together with North America’s most comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program. The WHL’s Players First support services continue to allow players to develop in a safe and positive environment. In the 25 th year of the WHL Scholarship, records were shattered for the sixth consecutive season, as 405 WHL graduates accessed their WHL Scholarship during the 2018-19 academic year. The WHL Scholarship continues to provide an unparalleled educational avenue for WHL graduates driven to achieve their academic goals. Of the 405 WHL graduates who accessed their WHL Scholarship, close to 200 continued their hockey development by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level this past season. The 2019 NHL Draft also provided reason for celebration as 28 WHL players, including seven in the first round, heard their name called on home ice in Vancouver. The 28 WHL players represent the largest number of players selected from any one developmental league in the world at the 2019 NHL Draft, reaffirming the WHL’s position as a leading producer of NHL talent. The 2019-20 WHL season will see many high calibre events on display in WHL territory. The WHL Cup will return to Calgary in October 2019, showcasing the top prospects in the system from the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft class. The 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series lands in Saskatoon and Prince Albert in November, as Team WHL faces the Russian National Team in a preview of the 2020 World Junior Championship. Finally, the Memorial Cup, Presented by Kia, returns to Western Canada for the third time in five years, as the Canadian Hockey League’s best from the WHL, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Ontario Hockey League take to the ice in Kelowna in May 2020. The WHL is very fortunate to have some of the most loyal fans in the game. Through your passion and loyalty, combined with the ongoing support of our corporate partners, broadcasters, and media, the WHL is once again in a position to provide our players with an unmatched world class experience. The 2019-20 WHL season is poised to be thrilling as our 22 member Clubs compete for a playoff berth and opportunity to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup. We look forward to another very exciting season of WHL hockey as you cheer on your favourite Club throughout the season. About the Western Hockey League Regarded as the world’s finest development league for junior hockey players, the Western Hockey League (WHL) head office is based in Calgary, Alberta. The WHL consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 located in Western Canada and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. A member of the Canadian Hockey League, the WHL has been a leading supplier of talent for the National Hockey League for over 50 years. The WHL is also the leading provider of hockey scholarships with over 350 graduates each year receiving WHL Scholarships to pursue a post-secondary education of their choice. Each season, WHL players also form the nucleus of Canada’s National Junior Hockey Team. Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League

Cordel Larson and Bear Hughes also scored for the Chiefs. Tri-City fought back from a 3-1 deficit to tie it at 3-3 midway through the 3rd. McAndrews, Bowman and Stevenson scored for the Ams. SERIES LEADERS… Adam Beckman has been outstanding against the Ams, leading all scorers with 12 points (8G-4A), followed by Cordel Larson, Jack Finley and Eli Zummack with 2G & 5A each. Tri-City is led by Sasha Mutala (1G-6A) and Nick Bowman (3G-3A). In goal, Beck Warm was a workhorse for the Americans, starting 6 games before being traded. LAST GAME Jan. 22: Spokane (3) vs. Everett (2) OT Eli Zummack scored the game-winner in OT and added an assist to lead the offense as Spokane got the monkey off their back, beating Everett for the first time this season on Wednesday night. Ty Smith registered his 200th career WHL point with a 1st period goal and Adam Beckman extended his WHL-leading point streak to 17 games with a shorthanded goal (set up by Zummack) early in the 2 nd. The Silvertips tied the game to force overtime with just under 3 minutes remaining in regulation. Lukas Parik earned 1st star honors with 32 saves.
NEWS & NOTES POWER OUTAGE… The Chiefs’ power play has experienced a slump lately, going 2-for-29 over their last 9 games dating back to New Year’s Eve at Tri-City. They have been held without a power play opportunity four times this season. MIDTERM RANKINGS… The Chiefs had two players NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings. F Jack Finley came in at 46th among North American skaters while F Bear Hughes was 80th. Finley was previously rated a “B” prospect while Hughes was a “C” despite starting the season unrated. Should either be selected, it would mark the 6th-straight year in which a Chief has been picked in the draft. TOP PROSPECT… Forward Jack Finley participated in the 2020 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game on Jan. 16 in Hamilton, Ontario. He was one of 13 WHL players selected. Notable previous Chiefs to participate include Ty Smith (2018; 1st round NJD) and Kailer Yamamoto (2017; 1st round EDM).
