BURKE PARENTS WANT A MIDDLE SCHOOL

SCHOOL DISTRICT 43

Vandalism costs in the thousands Glass smashed at Monty middle DIANE STRANDBERG The Tri-CiTy News

Alon Weinberger and Mery Naveh show a petition that is circulating on Burke Mountain to convince School District 43 to open a middle school by 2020 instead of 2025, as is planned. The parents say the recent census showed there are about 500 children who will be middle school-aged by then, enough to justify opening a new school.

Vandals trashed Montgomery middle school on the weekend, leaving thousands of dollars of damage in their wake. But within hours of the destruction, the Coquitlam school was cleaned up in time for classes to begin Monday morning. “That’s the real story here,” said principal Rob McFaul, who praised custodians who responded to the call for help. “It was like ‘I’ll grab this bucket, I’ll do this floor,’” he told The Tri-City News, noting it was still several hours worth of work to pick up all the glass from shattered windows, display cases and anything else that was glass. Coquitlam RCMP were called at 8:15 p.m. Sunday to Monty, where dozens of windows were broken and display cases, computers and

even a vending machine were smashed. Some fire extinguishers were also damaged, Cpl. Mike McLaughlin said. “It’s going to be thousands, if not tens of thousands, of dollars,” McLaughlin said. The following morning, McFaul said he and the rest of the Monty staff greeted students with the bad news and then everyone went to the gym, sat down in a circle and did a “head, heart and gut check.” “We talked about what is vandalism, we talked about how we move forward and how people cleaned up,” he said. Plywood was put up over exterior windows and cardboard over interior windows, and the school trophies were saved. Further repairs will be done Friday during a professional development day, when classes are not in session. Meanwhile, police say they are making progress on the case and anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP at 604-945-1550, quoting file #2017-29835. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com @dstrandbergTC
