Port Moody Police are warning people to watch out for wildlife after a cougar attacked a small dog Monday night on the city’s north shore.

According to officers, the cougar picked up the pooch near Chevalier Court and Flavelle Drive and tried to carry it away but dropped the animal after the owner yelled at it.

“The dog has since had surgery but is expected to make a full recovery,” PMPD said in a press release.

• People should also maintain eye contact with the animal and speak to it in a loud and firm voice to “reinforce the fact that you are a human and not an easy target,” said the PMPD press release.

• If a cougar does attack, people should fight back, focusing on the animal’s eyes and face.

Use rocks, sticks and any personal belongings as weapons, police said.

As many as 44 teams with names ranging from serious to humorous — and from Unreal Madrid to Real Ale Madrid — raised more than $172,000 for the Michael Cuccione Foundation during Saturday’s Kick for a Cure at Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park. The annual event is a fun soccer tournament that features a variety of attractions for kids and raises money to support research into cures for childhood cancers.

The Michael Cuccione Foundation, started in 1997, was named for a Coquitlam boy who beat childhood cancer but died in 2001 at the age of 16 from respiratory failure related to his cancer treatments.

A broken transmission could mean a change in plans for some special needs kids attending summer camp.

Debra Abraham, executive director of the Unique Get Together Society, which runs the program, said the group’s five-passenger 2004 Buick Rendezvous is used to transport children to outings all over the Lower Mainland to attractions such as the Britannia Mine Museum, the Greater Vancouver Zoo and Cultus Lake.

But after more than 170,000 km and a previous rebuild of the transmission two years ago, the vehicle has given up the ghost. And that means the eight kids at her camp may have to give up some of the experiences other children take for granted.

“They have so many barriers up already,” Abraham said.

“Some of them have never had the summer camp experience.”

Abraham said repairing the transmission will cost up to $3,500, money the small organization doesn’t readily have.

And while staff members have been pitching in as volunteer drivers with their own vehicles, co-ordinating the logistics has been a challenge.

Abraham said she’s hoping someone in the community may have a safe, functional pas-

senger van they no longer need that could be donated to the society. It’s especially important for kids with special needs and developmental challenges to have opportunities to grow and explore their capabilities, Abraham said, and summer camp can play a huge role.

“It gives them the experience of something different,” Abraham said. “Their brains are growing, their bodies are developing and they can learn.

It gives them choice.”

A husband charged with killing his wife in Port Coquitlam in 2014 was found guilty of second-degree murder last week following a trial in B.C. Supreme Court.

Irinei Ghiorghita, 41, will be sentenced next month, three years after he was taken into custody when the body of his wife, Andra Ghiorghita, was discovered at the couple’s Davis Avenue townhouse.

At the time, the couple, who were married in Romania in 2001, had a child who was staying with family outside of the country.

Owner of rings sought after a thrift store find JANIS CLEUGH

An Australian visiting Port Moody got a shock last week after finding two rings in a purse she bought at the Share thrift shop.

Zoey Lovejoy was browsing in the Share’d Treasures Thrift Store on St. Johns Street when a package caught her eye: Inside were two small purses

and a playing cards case — all clad in tartan. Lovejoy said she was drawn to the fabric as her family comes from the Orkney Islands and her daughter was married in Scotland.

But when she got back to her daughter’s home, where she’s staying until November, Lovejoy said she opened her purchases and found inside one of the purses a tiny white bag containing a gold wedding

band and engagement ring with a loose diamond.

“It’s obvious she would be repairing it, I’m assuming,” Lovejoy said of the owner.

Lovejoy alerted the thrift store staff and called the Port Moody Police Department.

And yesterday (Tuesday), Lovejoy was expected to turn the rings into the police with the hope the owner will come forward and be reunited with her

jewellery. It is believed the rings are a size 5 or smaller; the engagement ring also has an oldfashioned setting for the gem.

“They’re obviously sentimental to someone,” Lovejoy told The Tri-City News. “They should be returned.”

Almost 6 years later, arrest in a stabbing Maple Ridge man faces a variety of criminal charges GARY MCKENNA

A 39-year-old Maple Ridge man has been charged with a stabbing almost six years ago at the Coquitlam Central Station bus loop that left a man in critical condition.

Tyrel William Scott will face one count of aggravated assault stemming from the incident, along with more than a dozen additional weapons charges the resulted from the stabbing investigation.

“We don’t forget when something is this serious,” said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Michael McLaughlin. “We are constantly trying to solve these cases.”

The stabbing occurred early on Dec. 15, 2011, when a 19-year-old Maple Ridge man was attacked by another

man with a knife shortly after midnight. The victim sustained multiple stab wounds, including one that pierced his heart, before being rushed to hospital.

The suspect fled, running through the parking lot and past the A&W at nearby Pinetree Village shopping plaza toward Westwood Street, where he is believed to have left behind a hoodie.

Two months after the incident, police held a press conference where they showed off the clothing and some surveillance photos of a suspect. While the appeal to the public turned up some leads, McLaughlin said new evidence was recently uncovered that led investigators to recommend charges to the Crown.

“I can’t get into it in great detail,” McLaughlin said, “but it was only recently that the investigation bore fruit to the point where we had what we believe was a strong case.”

He added that as investigators pursued the assault investigation, they turned up

evidence of other crimes. On top of the aggravated assault charge, Scott, a 39-year-old who is well known to police, is also facing five counts of possession of a firearm while prohibited, four counts of possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon, three counts of possession of a firearm without a licence and two counts of possession of weapon.

“That was a big reason why it took so long,” McLaughlin said. “It became more complicated. As we investigated the original assault, we uncovered evidence that other crimes were committed.”

Still, a motive for the stabbing continues to elude police, McLaughlin said.

“Our investigation hasn’t shown any particular reason why the victim was targeted,” he said. “As far as we can tell, the victim was truly a victim.”

A man found not criminally responsible for murder who went missing from Coquitlam Forensic Psychiatric Hospital last week has been returned to custody.

Terrence Scott Giesbrecht had not been seen since Friday when Coquitlam RCMP sent out a release Monday evening asking the public if anyone had any information on his whereabouts.

tion on where he was located but police said in their warning to the public that he may have left the Lower Mainland.

Giesbrecht has lived at the Colony Farm Road hospital since 2004 after he was found not criminally responsible by reason of a mental disorder for killing two men in Fort St. John in 2004.

This is not the first time he has left the facility. In 2009, he did not return to the hospital after being let out on a day pass. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest but he returned to the facility on his own two days later. gmckenna@tricitynews.com @gmckennaTC

GUN GOes OFF, ChArGes POssiBLe Police are considering charges after a Port Coquitlam man accidentally fired a bullet into a neighbour’s house.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, which occurred at around 10:30 p.m. Monday on Maywood Avenue in northeast PoCo when the man was practising with the pistol before it accidentally

discharged.

The incident occurred while the man was “manipulating” the weapon, which is the practice of clearing the firearm and reloading in the event of a stoppage or a jam, said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

“That is something that you have to do in a very controlled condition,” he said. “It

looks like those safety procedures were not followed.

“Certainly, when you have a firearm that goes off in a public space, it is a concern.”

Charges are being considered but none have yet been laid against the man, who has been issued a promise to appear in court. The man is not known to police. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

So many meat-eaters were at Port Moody’s RibFest last weekend that vendors ran out of some items on Sunday, the city says.

The third annual feast at Rocky Point Park drew tens of thousands of hungry visitors from around Metro Vancouver wanting a taste of the saucy ribs, local craft beer and live music.

City spokesperson Rosemary Lodge said the beer garden, which featured products from nearby Brewers Row, was at capacity Saturday night while Sunday — the sunniest day of the weekend — was the busiest day overall.

Organizers were ready to handle the extra crowds — many of them arriving via the newly opened Evergreen Extension — and had ordered 20% more product than last year.

Still, it wasn’t enough, with four of the five cookers out of some menu selections on Day 3.

In an email to members of the Port Moody Rotary Club, which hosted the attraction, president Michael Poznanski praised volunteers for the successful run, noting: “You all deserve the biggest pats on the back for your devotion to the community and the club. The park was packed!”

You can help a Coq. student win $25,000 to help street youth Sometimes, all it takes is a hug — now a Coquitlam high school student who knows that better than anyone needs your vote.

Andrew Teel was a foster child of five when he asked a woman at his Tri-City school for a hug. A year later, she had adopted him.

More recently, the Grade 10 student in School District 43’s Inquiry Hub has been attracting attention and support for raising more than $49,000 for Covenant House in Vancouver, a sum that was tripled by private sponsors.

Now, he has a chance to boost the donation by another $25,000 through the MLS MVP contest.

Teel has been nominated by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer to represent the club in Chicago at the MLS All Star Game on Aug. 2.

Development, Burke Mt. & the not-so-great walls of Coquitlam B uilding on a steep hillside comes with challenges but new rules are needed now to prevent Burke Mountain from becoming dominated by retaining walls.

Under current rules, developers are allowed to exceed current height restrictions for retaining walls when they are planning a subdivision. The result is the creation of some very tall walls to enable new subdivisions to be built on flat land.

Is this the case of the city of Coquitlam being asleep at the switch and allowing developers to exploit a policy loophole?

velopment on sites with grades of 35% and more, and four years ago required developers to consider topography when designing their projects in one of the most challenging regions in Metro Vancouver.

But, clearly, some projects have been approved that require the installation of large retaining walls and council is now reviewing the matter.

Unless developers can show some restraint, they may be forced to adhere to much stricter rules, which could even include the prohibition of flat lots.

There are a number of reasons developers want to be able

to create flat parcels of land for houses and townhomes — with a key issue being marketability.

Homeowners like the kind of amenities that a flat lot can create, and building decks, patios, lawns and driveways to accommodate a hill could be more expensive and require more complex infrastructure.

It may also be more expensive to build on a steep slope given engineering considerations.

But there are many examples where beautiful homes have been built into a hillside and in Europe, hillside communities have stood for centuries.

There are also environmental

benefits in building with more sensitive design, and Burke Mountain could and should be developed in a way that is more in keeping with nature, taking advantage of the opportunity of hillside development rather than turning the area into a series of flat terraces upheld by huge, grey walls that become an eyesore.

Coquitlam can surely look at other cities that have developed on extreme hillsides for examples and implement rules quickly to prevent further great walls being built that seem out of keeping for a city that says it prides itself on coexisting with nature.

Why remove rentals Irresponsible to not look at when there’s a crisis?

The Editor, Re. “Big plans in works for Cottonwood Park” (The Tri-City News, July 12) and “Has your mayor been hanging around for too long?”

(Opinion, The Tri-City News, July 14).

Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart never mentions that the expansion of Cottonwood Park can be carried out only after 200 affordable rental apartments now on the site have been razed.

Similarly, at the three Burquitlam-Lougheed Neighbourhood Plan public consultation sessions, a check with other attendees revealed none were aware of this fact nor did any of the many colourful presentation posters and maps of the site give any clues. To casual attendees, who might well have favoured this park expansion, it looked as if this wonderful looking amenity was to be created on bare land.

MAYOR RICHARD STEWART But the truth is that the partnership with the YMCA and Concert Properties to realize this park expansion also has a human cost for the 200 families that have already begun to be displaced. In addition, their perfectly livable, family-oriented rental apartments will also be permanently lost from the city’s affordable rental housing stock — at the time of the worst rental affordability crisis ever.

Even if the partnership includes a plan for Concert to build new rental replacement apartments in Burquitlam Park, along with a new YMCA pool complex, by 2021, do you start building up your affordable rental stock by destroying 200 of your most affordable units first?

This so-called “innovative” deal, which also wrecks space in one park to create about an equal amount of additional space in another, should be reconsidered. And since municipal elections are to be held in 2018, this should be an election issue.

We would like to thank all of those who helped make this year’s festival a success. With record breaking crowds coming out to see Trooper and fireworks, to celebrate Canada’s 150th.

On the one hand, we have a vision of a futuristic, clean, high-tech, gleaming city of towers, large parks and amenities for the new property owners and investor-buyers; on the other, a growing tidal wave of dispossessed renters, forced to move on, with nowhere to go.

As Mike Klassen in his opinion piece observes regarding the mayor of Burnaby: “His floundering explanation for why he continues to allow low-income apartments to be razed while 45-storey, highend condo buildings replace them should be a flag to voters that it is time for a change.”

The same thing is going on here in Coquitlam — and it must stop.

Can density and amenity issues not be resolved without drastic consequences for the less affluent occupying or desperately seeking low-cost housing?

amalgamation The Editor, Re. “Answer to conflict: having just one city — not three” (Letters, The Tri-City News, July 21).

Recent letters to the editor are starting to ignite discussions on why amalgamating Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody could be worth investigating.

As a resident of the Tri-Cities for nearly 30 years, I can understand differing opinions on the subject. But I think it less than responsible to not take a serious look at all of the potential advantages and disadvantages of administratively merging the three cities and striving to retain their most important individual characteristics.

The current conflict between Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam regarding Burke Mountain is understandable but if both cities could look beyond their

own borders, a suitable solution might well be found.

Nearly 50 years ago, when I was living in Chilliwack, I asked a learned mentor why the city and the township couldn’t work together and be more efficient. His response was simple: Every summer at that time, the lieutenant-governor welcomed all municipal politicians to a garden party in Victoria. If there were only one Chilliwack, a number of current politicians wouldn’t get an invitation, he told me.

Perhaps his answer was a tad over-simplified but if longer-term solutions to everincreasing challenges are to be achieved, then a back-to-thefuture answer might be worth looking at. After all, there was a time when Coquitlam was the lone municipality in what we now recognize at The Tri-Cities.

Austin Heights Neighbourhood Plan

The intent of Bylaw 4776, 2017 is to amend City of Coquitlam Citywide Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 3479, 2001 in order to revise the Austin Heights Neighbourhood Plan (AHNP) and make related amendments to the Development Permit Area Guidelines.

If approved, Bylaw 4776, 2017 would remove “Landmark Site Designation” from the AHNP and introduce gateway design policies. The Bylaw would also establish a maximum height limit of up to 25 storeys within the neighbourhood centre. The existing 4 storey height limit currently in effect for pre-identified areas will remain unchanged.

The intent of Bylaw 4777, 2017 is to amend City of Coquitlam Zoning Bylaw Subject Property: No. 3000, 1996 to revise the height and Austin Heights Neighbourhood Centre density provisions of the C-5 Zone. If approved, the text amendment would facilitate the following revisions: • Amend the C-5 zone to incorporate the proposed maximum 25 storey height limit in the Austin Heights Neighbourhood centre and the existing 4 storey height limit; • Bring the C-5 zone in line with the Citywide Density Bonusing Program; • Add the C-5 zone as a corresponding zone to Section 510 Affordable Housing and Special Needs Housing in the Zoning Bylaw in order to make it consistent with the City’s Housing Affordability Strategy; and • Implement several housekeeping amendments in order to remove inconsistencies between the AHNP and the C-5 zone.

Port Moody Fire Rescue is warning people to stay off the mudflats at the east end of the Port Moody arm of Burrard Inlet.

The flats, which are exposed when the tide is low, can be a tempting shortcut across the inlet, said Fire Chief Ron Coulson, but they can get as deep as eight feet in places and act like quicksand to unsus-

pecting adventurers.

“You don’t realize the danger until you start sinking and can’t get out,” Coulson said in a press release.

Coulson says his firefighters have special training and equipment to rescue people who’ve become stuck in the mud.

He advises if you do get stuck in the mud, struggling to get free only makes the situa-

tion worse.

Stay calm, Coulson says, yell for help or call 911. If you’re on shore and see someone stuck, don’t venture out to help; advise the person not to panic and then call 911.

How do I provide input?

Verbal submissions may only be made in person at the Public Hearing. The City Clerk’s Office will compile a Speakers List for each item. To have your name added to the Speakers List please call 604-927-3010. Everyone will be permitted to speak at the Public Hearing but those who have registered in advance will be given first opportunity.

Please also be advised that video recordings of Public Hearings are streamed live and archived on the City’s website at www.coquitlam.ca/webcasts.

It has been a very busy first half of the year for the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce. It’s hard to believe we will be opening up submissions for the Business Excellence Awards again shortly. In January, we congratulated seven businesses and professionals for their outstanding service and passion for the Tri-Cities.

As I indicated at the Gala, all 41 members of the Chamber team are working hard to bring the objectives laid out in our strategic plan to life. For the next three years the Chamber Board of Directors, Ambassadors, and staff will continue to strengthen and clarify our brand, maximize our value to drive sustainable partnerships with Carlo Zarrillo, Chair all stakeholders, and promote the Tri-Cities as the best place to Tri-Cities Chamber live, work, and play. Through every step we act with leadership, integrity, innovation and we strive for service excellence while we work to shape the future of business and our community.

I am happy to report that over the past 6 months, we have made tremendous progress in bringing our strategic plan to life. This year, we have already started to strengthen and clarify our brand with the successful launch of our new website, creation of new marketing materials, and an increase in our physical presence at events in the community. We have maximized our value by providing our members with additional cost-saving benefits and educational opportunities. To meet our last strategic objective, we continuously promote the Tri-Cities as the best place to live, work, and play. With the help of the Economic Summit and upcoming Business Showcase, we are able to attract professionals from across Metro Vancouver to the Tri-Cities. As well, we are regularly creating new policy and advocating on behalf of our members to the municipal and provincial levels of government.

A version of the first crossCanada passenger train journey that ended in Port Moody 131 years ago will roll out for the country’s 150th year.

On Friday, CP Rail will launch the reverse of its inaugural transcontinental trip, starting from the Golden Spike

town with award-winning entertainers on board the Canada 150 Train to wow the crowds at 13 stops along the way.

Indigenous dancer Dallas Arcand, who has spoken about his sacred hoop teachings at TedX, and country musician Dean Brody are lined up to perform.

Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Hamilton, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.

Leading the train is the 1958 F-unit diesel locomotive 1401 that will tow more than 10 restored royal CP heritage cars.

They are branded “royal” as some of the most influential leaders have been passengers.

The mental resolve Erin Regan developed over 17 years of competitive figure skating to pick herself up and keep going after crashing hard to the ice is serving her well in her new sport, Aussie Rules Football.

Now she crashes into other bodies.

Regan, a teacher at Moody elementary, left Monday for footy’s heartland, Melbourne, Australia, where she’ll play for Canada’s national women’s team at the sixth Australian Football International Cup that runs from Aug. 5 to 19.

The tournament, which is contested every three years, is the largest international Aussie Rules Football event in the world and Canada is the defending women’s champion.

That’s put a little extra pressure on Regan, who only discovered the sport four years ago after she played rugby for 10 years following the demise of her skating aspirations. Not only will the women’s final be contested at Melbourne’s expansive Etihad Stadium but they’ll be playing in front of thousands of rabid fans settling in for a regular Australian Football League match between Carlton and Hawthorne that follows.

Regan, who plays club footy with the Burnaby-based Vancouver Vixens, says the prospect of playing a match under the critical gaze of footy fans who grew up with the game is a bit intimidating.

“It’ll be a real learning experience,” Regan says. “Aussies can be real candid, but having that Aussie crowd will make

Regan says her progression from figure skating to the rough-and-tumble sports of rugby and footy may not make the most logical sense, but it was probably inevitable.

“I wouldn’t say I was the most graceful figure skater,” Regan says.

While Aussie ex-pats and growing ranks of Canadian

athletes have had a men’s league in the Lower Mainland since 2001, the women’s game is still in its infancy.

Regan says she discovered the sport when her husband, Giancarlo Brancati, played for the Burnaby Eagles. While the occasional female player would suit up for the men’s games, there was a formative women’s team in Delta that mostly played intra-squad

matches and occasional tournament fixtures against teams from Seattle, Portland, Calgary and Edmonton.

Now playing for the Vixens, Regan says it can be a challenge to field a full squad — usually the team plays 15-aside footy and the International Cup will be her first experience playing on a full side of 18 players.

Regan says the speed and

spatial awareness required of top footy players is unlike any sport she’s ever experienced.

The action comes from all sides on the expansive oval pitch, hits come from any direction.

“People who’ve seen it say it’s insane,” Regan says. “The contact and pursuit of the ball is constant.”

But one element the Aussie game shares with her previ-

ous athletic endeavours is the camaraderie. Teammates look out for each other and opponents respect each other, Regan says. When the running and kicking and tackling and pounding are over both sides get together to celebrate their bond with the sport.

Adanacs reach BCJALL finals again Juniors will play New West in final that begins Friday

The Coquitlam Adanacs scored nine times in the third period Saturday to defeat the Victoria Shamrocks 15-11 and sweep their way into the BCJALL final that begins Friday against the New Westminster Salmonbellies.

The Shamrocks seemed determined to force a fourth game in their best-of-five semifinal as they held leads of 5-3 at the end of the first period and 9-6 heading into the third at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex. But it took just 35 seconds into the final frame for the Adanacs to hold off making a call for a ferry reservation for a return match Sunday on the Island.

That’s when Thomas Semple’s goal sparked eight straight markers in the period that launched Coquitlam into its ninth consecutive league final.

Tommy Scanlan got the Adanacs to within a goal of the visitors just over three minutes later, and Chase Scanlan tied it with 15 minutes remaining in regulation time.

As the junior Adanacs breathe the rarified air of playoff success, their senior counterparts will miss the Western Lacrosse Association post-season for a fourth straight year.

While a 7-4 win by the Burnaby Lakers over Victoria on Friday night ensured the Adanacs of another August

without lacrosse, Coquitlam solidified its status as alsorans by losing to the Nanaimo Timbermen 15-14 Saturday night at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex.

That dropped them three points behind the fifth-place Timbermen with three games left in the season. Nanaimo has two games remaining. The two teams will face each other in their season finales next Sunday in Nanaimo.

Three goals by the Timbermen in a span of 2:25 late in the third period proved the difference in their game last Saturday. That wiped out a 13-12 lead for the Adanacs in a wild seesaw game in which each team held a lead six times.

Reid Reinholdt got one of those goals back for the Adanacs with 36 seconds left to play, but they couldn’t get the equalizer past Timbermen’s keeper Peter Dubenski.

Brian Gillis scored three goals and added three assists to lead the Adanacs’ scorers.

Cody Adamson had five points.

Before their final game next Sunday against Nanaimo, the Adanacs will also play Langley tonight (Wednesday) and they’ll host Maple Ridge on Saturday.

Bantam girls win silver

Four Coquitlam lacrosse players returned from the female national box lacrosse championships in Halifax last week with more in their luggage than they left with.

Presumably their silver medals fit in their carry-on bags.

Andee Jackson, Breanna Hollingshead, Teagan Ng and Chelsea Philbrook were part of Team BC that finished second in the Bantam division at the finals.

The team had four wins and two losses in round-robin play. One of those wins was over Ontario, that team’s only defeat.

The rivals met again in the final.

After Ng opened the scoring 54 seconds into the game, Ontario roared back to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. BC pulled to within a goal early, but Ontario was able to hang on for the win.

BC won the Midget title.

Is now the time to buy local real estate?

With warm summer weather and school vacations in full swing, many would-be home buyers seem to be more preoccupied with having a good time than purchasing a property.

In the week of July 10-16, this resulted in a slight uptick in available homes for sale, for both detached houses and attached units such as condos, townhomes and duplexes.

All property types took a little longer to sell than the previous week, too, with days on market creeping up to a median of 17 for attached units and 35 for single-family homes.

Port Moody, where prices are steadily rising on the back of the SkyTrain extension and a host of new development, saw the highest median attached unit price at $642,750. But it was Burnaby South that saw the area’s most expensive attached home sale that week – a stunning familysized duplex in Upper Deer Lake that sold

for $1,618,000 after 42 days on market.

Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam are the areas to find more of a bargain, it seems.

Of the entire area’s seven unit sales under $400K during the same week, three were in Port Coquitlam. The least expensive sale was a one-bed, 740-square-foot condo in Coquitlam’s Maillardville neighbourhood, which went for a mere $280K. Coquitlam also boasted the lowestpriced detached home sale that week – a great 1980-built four-bedroom family home in the River Springs community, which has a community pool and recreational facilities. This house sold for $812,500 after 30 days listed.

Indeed, all but one of the nine singlefamily homes that sold the same week for under $1 million are located either in Port Coquitlam or Coquitlam.
