51 storeys tall, for about 5,000 residents, next to Port Moody’s Coronation Park. In the words of Mayor Richard Stewart, “the era of building single-family neighbourhoods is over.” Still, the population growth also comes with new opportunities to expand the city’s infrastructure: Spani Pool is being upgraded, and Blue Mountain Park in Central Coquitlam is being revisioned as is Glen Park in City Centre, where 24,000 more residents are planned for the next 20 years.

onstruction, construction, construction. Everywhere you turn in Coquitlam, work crews are out building new homes in the community.
From Fraser Mills in the south, where Beedie Living plans a waterfront community on the historical sawmill site, to Burquitlam, where the new YMCA is up and running, and Burke Mountain — a neighbourhood in the northeastern part of the city that continues to swell — Coquitlam is booming.
Town Centre Park in City Centre continues to be updated (while the Innovation Centre is being turned into a community centre) and be the centre for major festivals and events: This past summer saw thousands of visitors from around the Pacific Northwest come to the Pinetree Way park for the popular BC Highland Games as well as the BC Dumpling Festival and Caribbean Days.
And for current residents looking for relief, there’s not much in sight as development applications pour in to meet the city’s housing obligations, and master-planned communities move forward.
Meanwhile, as for its leadership, the council makeup changed after the civic vote last October with councillors Matt Djonlic and Robert Mazzarolo at the table to help make the municipal decisions.
This year, city council OK’d Polygon’s bid for Coronation Heights that, when built out, will see nine towers up to ★

What is a typical workday for you? The best part of my role with the AHBIA is that I never have a “typical” day. Our association has four key areas to focus on: marketing and advertising; member and community events; safety and beautification; and advocacy and community relations. My day can consist of any number of things related to those areas. Whatever it may be, it’s always fresh, fun and interesting.

Why did you get into the business? Why did you get into the business? Since arriving in Coquitlam in 2010, I have always resided in Austin Heights. When the opportunity came up to work with the AHBIA, I welcomed the chance to bring my PR experience and skillset to the organization and help to continue to build on the amazing foundation that the co-founder and previous ED, Erin Davidson, and the AHBIA board had created. How does your organization plan to grow? How does your organization plan to grow? As the oldest commercial area in Coquitlam, Austin Heights is in a growth and revitalization phase and the AHBIA plans to grow with it by supporting
the needs of our members and the area. Our goal for our neighbourhood is that it continues to always be a wonderful place to eat, shop and live in Coquitlam. How does it support others? How does it support others? The AHBIA’s primary focus is to support our members and ensure that their businesses thrive. We understand that a large part of doing that is with strong community partnerships with other local not-forprofits, our businesses and the City of Coquitlam. Where do you shop in the Tri-Cities? Where do you shop in the Tri-Cities? Austin Heights! I might sound bias, but the area is filled with a number of amazing and unique shops, services and restaurants. I’m happy to support them whenever I can. What Tri-City sports groups do you cheer for? I love all spectator sports but, as huge hockey fan, I have to say the Coquitlam Express is who I root for. Going to their games is always so much fun. What Tri-City arts events and festivals do you attend? There is certainly no shortage of funfilled events in the Tri-Cities. From the May Day Parade in PoCo to the Golden Spike Days in Port Moody and the Canada Day Celebrations in Coquitlam, there is always something to do in the Tri-Cities. What Tri-City arts events and festivals do you attend? Over the years, I have had the opportunity to volunteer with the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce, the Coquitlam Foundation, the Soroptimists of the Tri-Cities and the Rotary Club of Coquitlam Sunrise. Where can we see you in the community? Without a doubt, you can find me in Austin Heights and at a variety of community events.

What is a typical workday for you? The interesting part of working in the arts is that there are very few ‘typical’ workdays. Every day, our small but mighty team switches between print and digital advertising, graphic design, photography, copywriting, social media, website development, signage updates and ongoing communications with patrons and partners.

Why did you get into the business? I believe that access to the arts makes our communities better. Recreation doesn’t just mean sports: attending events and taking part in festivals is an excellent way to connect with loved ones and feel included in your neighbourhood. As an arts administrator, I get to help build the inclusive, accessible spaces artists need to create and share the magic of live arts with others. How does your organization plan to grow? We are always thinking of ways to expand our arts programming and provide new opportunities for artists and audiences alike. Just this year, we started two new series of live events and in 2024 a new community centre will open right next to Evergreen. We can’t wait to see new faces and explore new ways to engage with Lafarge Lake visitors. How does it support others? Supporting artists, arts organizations and our cultural partners is an integral part of what we do. Evergreen offers engaging mentorship and professional opportunities for artists of all disciplines, co-presents events with several dedicated local companies like Stage 43, Coastal Sound, Dare to Shine and Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and offers fundraising donations and reduced rental rates to other non-profit organizations. Where do you shop in the Tri-Cities? I love to make regular Sunday morning visits to the Coquitlam Farmers Market. I also enjoy wan-

dering around The Unmediocre General & Kitchen Stores in Newport Village, our local Chapters and grab my art supplies from the Opus Arts in Maillardville. What Tri-City sports groups do you cheer for? I’d be remiss not to mention the Coquitlam Express, but we had a really great time sharing our beautiful Lafarge Lake with the BC Highland Games at ScotFestBC this summer. The Heavy Events were so exciting to watch in person. What Tri-City arts events and festivals do you attend? Of course, Evergreen Cultural Centre is THE place to be if you’re looking for an event. We present more than 50 live performances in our studio theatre and professional visual arts exhibitions in the Art Gallery at Evergreen. You can also find an Evergreen tent at nearly every arts festival and city-led event in the Tri-Cities — and I’m usually there to say hello. When I’m not involved with events, I love to attend drag shows on Brewers Row and C-Market Coffee’s live music nights at their Port Coquitlam location. What non-profit groups do you volunteer for? Most recently, I volunteered with the BC Touring Council as part of their Next Gen Committee, providing workshops and opportunities for artists and touring organizations in BC to explore ideas to engage with young creators and emerging audiences. Where can we see you in the community? Please come say hello at Evergreen! I’d love to connect with you and tell you all about the high-quality shows and public programs happening right here in our community. Coquitlam hero Terry Fox, and his family led the historic Rotary parade down Shaughnessy Street while Canadian country star JoJo Mason headlined the party in the Terry Fox Hometown Square by the Port Coquitlam Community Centre. And talking about the recreation hub, the PCCC came into its own with many groups organizing community events — on dry land and ice — at the $132-million facility that opened in 2021.

rom its revamped Veterans Park and McAllister Avenue to its updated Leigh Square, Port Coquitlam’s downtown is shaping up to be a vibrant and welcoming hub around city hall.
Among those using the 800-seat Jon Baillie Arena is Port Coquitlam’s new junior hockey team: the Trailblazers, the 14th Junior ‘B’ team in the Pacific Junior Hockey League and owned by Rob Toor.
And with the redevelopment comes business — with builders and retailers excited about what’s happening in the core and wanting to invest, and arts and sporting groups eager to host activities.
The PCCC also earned a gold rating from the Rick Hansen Foundation for its accessible components. As for the city’s leadership, it changed slightly after last October’s civic election with the election of special events planner Paige Petriw; Mayor Brad West was acclaimed in the 2022 vote.

What is a typical workday for you? Well, life looks a little different now with the arrival of our little girl. My role has shifted from being in the store 60 hours a week to a more hybrid role of managing our wholesale line at our cold-storage facility, vendor relations and logistics, and behind the scenes operational functions. I have also been getting things organized for our new location which we have been working on for over a year now.

Why did you get into the business? I have openly shared my life-long struggle with disordered eating, and we wanted to bring an inclusive, positive and healthy environment to the community for everyone — regardless of their health journey. At the time, there were no other cold-pressed juiceries in the Tri-Cities, and so we showcased our product at Port Moody’s Car-Free Day and the rest is history. How does your organization plan to grow? We are very excited to have opened our second location in Coquitlam Centre mall this October and the reception has been incredible so far. We look forward to opportunities over the coming years to open additional locations in high-traffic areas such as other shopping centres, and plan to continue bringing healthy food and beverage options to our community, while innovating and expanding our offerings.
How does it support others? We always make local organizations the priority with donation and sponsorship requests. Since we opened in 2018, we have supported over 100 different events, teams, schools, fundraisers and charities. We love to give where we live and support our local community. Where do you shop in the Tri-Cities? Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and as a family, we love to support local. We are very fortunate to live in Newport Village with some incredible small businesses that we frequent daily on our walks. The Village Toy Shop is great for gifts and toys for our little one, and I only buy my runners from The Runners Den. Honestly, I could list 100 different awesome small businesses in the Tri-Cities. Let’s just say our A-List voting ballot was extremely full this year. What Tri-City sports groups do you cheer for? We are a die-hard Port Moody Thunder Lacrosse family as my husband and business partner has been a coach for the last 13 years. We also love cheering on the Coquitlam Express, and are excited to catch some Junior hockey games in Port Moody and Port Coquitlam this winter. What Tri-City arts events and festivals do you attend? This year we have had the privilege of attending quite a few community events. Most recently we attended the BC Dumpling Festival at Town Centre Park, did the Art Walk in Port Moody this summer, and attended the IOCO Players most recent production Lullaby to Broadway. We love being out in the community and supporting whenever we can. Where can we see you in the community? On our daily walks in Newport Village and Rocky Point Park, or now at Squish Juicery in Coquitlam Centre Mall.

What is a typical workday for you? Everyday is different for me. Much of my time is invested in meetings, Zoom calls, committees, staff meetings, government consultations and strategy. My role is to provide support for my staff team members to be effective in their roles and ensure they have the right resources to do amazing work. In reflecting on a typical day I will spend time on finance, human resources, contract negotiations, insurance, information technology, facilities management, strategic initiatives and coaching.

Why did you get into the business? To make the community a more inclusive and safer place for all citizens, specifically for the most vulnerable. How does your organization plan to grow? Incrementally, the growth of the organization keeps pace with our ability to provide quality care. Our organization provides services to support children, youth, adults and families so they can improve their lives. Our services continue to evolve every day and we embrace continuous quality improvement. We fill gaps in service within the community and provide innovative solutions to individual needs facing the people we provide care for. We are currently expanding our staffed resources and family caregiving opportunities, and broadening the reach of our clinical counselling services. How does it support others? Partnerships are extremely important to me and our organization. Rather than duplicating services organizations need to support each other to deliver quality care to the community. I am proud to represent PLEA Community Services in leadership positions with several provincial organizations. We have several partnership agreements and reciprocal relationships with many 44

organizations throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. In the Tri-Cities, we are delighted to be a member of the Tri-Cities Community Services Cooperative partnering with other like-minded organizations in our community. Where do you shop in the Tri-Cities? Suzette’s Café, Caffe Delish, Sunfire Pizza, Awesome Sushi, Miu Sushi, Arctic Meats, Spirit Bear Coffee, Trek Bicycles, Europe Deli, The Runners Den, and Gabbi and Jules. The list goes on. What Tri-City sports groups do you cheer for? Having grown up playing fastball I enjoy watching amateur baseball and softball while walking the dog. I also enjoyed catching a few Adanacs Lacrosse games this year. The Coquitlam Reds and Express are on my list. What Tri-City arts events and festivals do you attend? I regularly attend events hosted at the Evergreen Cultural Centre specifically the theatrical series, Port Moody Ribfest, Caribbean Festival, Lights at Lafarge and the Port Coquitlam Car Show. What non-profit groups do you volunteer for? I am on the board of directors of the Federation of Community Social Services of BC, Community Social Services Employers Association, Provincial Association of Residential and Community Agencies, Canadian Criminal Justice Association, Provincial Association of Residential and Community Agencies, Tri-Cities Community Services Cooperative, Realize Strategies and the Health Benefit Trust as a trustee. Where can we see you in the community? Walking the dog around Mundy Park, biking on the many trails throughout the Tri-Cities, Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce events, Farmers Markets and at PLEA Community Services Port Coquitlam offices.

phases on its 24 acres to the west; that $1.1-billion project is being funded with a $140-million commitment by BC Housing. Meanwhile, Andrew Peller Ltd. also got council’s blessing in July to develop its five-acre former winery site, called Westport Village, for three residential high-rises up to 31 storeys tall, as well as a new 350-seat theatre and arts centre, live–work artists studios, a grocery store and more. As for the arts and culture scene, PoMoArts marked its 25th year while the Port Moody Station Museum was rebranded to POMO Museum thanks in part to Mike Arseneault, the founder of IOCO Players Theatre. In June, two house posts carved as part of a project called In the Presence of Ancestors were also blessed at Rocky Point Park to celebrate National Indigenous People’s Day.
T
here are big changes coming to the City of the Arts with housing developments sprouting up. The municipality, now led by Mayor Meghan Lahti following the 2022 election, recently OK’d Coronation Park, a 14.8-acre site at the corner of Ioco Road and Barnet Highway that, by 2029, will be home to about 5,550 new residents in six towers up to 31 storeys in height. Once built out, the Wesgroup project will signal one of the biggest housing shifts to Port Moody’s landscape in years.
This past summer, the city also underwent a splash of colour thanks to artist Melissa Burgher who, with several volunteers, painted a giant community mural off Spring Street called Coming Home.
Still, it’s not the only big development as the city grapples with its mandated housing targets.
And in October, Squamish Nation artist James Harry unveiled his First Nations sculpture, titled Lháẃḵem or Blue Mussel, in front of the Panatch Group’s building at 50 Electronic Ave. in PoMo.
Pre-sales for the master-planned community Portwood — the old Woodland Park neighbourhood — have now begun by Edgar Development, which is rolling out five ★

What is a typical workday for you? It’s really varied. Touring member businesses, hosting events, Zoom calls on policy development with my counterparts across the country, presenting to city councils, advocating on issues like ending the labour action at West Coast ports this past summer, preparing for a board meeting... and laughing together with the amazing staff team here at the Chamber. Even on the very tough days, we are here for each other and always find joy in our work.

Why did you get into the business? I was absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to work on behalf of businesses right here in my own community. I love meeting entrepreneurs, learning their stories, understanding their challenges and opportunities, and supporting their success through the strength of the Chamber network. How does your organization plan to grow? By providing exceptional advocacy, benefits, connections, savings and education for our member businesses to foster local prosperity. Embracing diversity of all kinds is also key in everything we do. Our Chamber is now one of the top-five largest Chambers and boards of trade in the province, and our membership is at an all-time high and continuing to grow. We are also proud and active members of the BC and Canadian Chambers of Commerce, ensuring the Tri-Cities voice of business is heard at the provincial and national levels. ★

How does it support others? Strong business fosters strong communities. We support all businesses in the Tri-Cities, and we are the conveners of business, government and community to foster dialogue and find solutions to the complex challenges facing our society today. Where do you shop in the Tri-Cities? I love visiting Chamber members across the Tri-Cities. Some of my favourite spots are the Unmediocre General Store, Beyond Basic Eyewear Optical, Coquitlam Florist, Squish Juicery, Metro Ford, Cassandra Cake Co, DisDaBomb, and Creekside Coffee... Oh, I could go on! There are so many amazing businesses in the Tri-Cities. What Tri-City sports groups do you cheer for? Coquitlam Express, Hustle For Hops trail runners, Port Moody Soccer and Heritage Woods Kodiaks. What Tri-City arts events and festivals do you attend? In addition to the 50+ Chamber events each year, I was honoured to attend Kwikwetlem First Nation’s Walk for Reconciliation and I loved participating in the Terry Fox Hometown Run. I really enjoyed ‘The Shuffle’ Port Moody Art Walk, Austin Heights HollyDaze and the Port Coquitlam Foundation’s croquet tournament was so fun! I try to attend as many events and festivals as I can. What non-profit groups do you volunteer for? I am a member of the Port Moody Rotary Club and help other causes when I can, like Soroptimists of the Tri-Cities Warm Place for Women. Where can we see you in the community? Running the Traboulay PoCo Trail, enjoying a beer on a patio or walking my big fluffy dog Brutus at Town Centre Park, Buntzen Lake or Rocky Point Park.

What is a typical workday for you? A typical workday involves overseeing the operations of our taekwondo schools in Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Burquitlam and Vancouver. This includes staff training, administrative duties and ensuring that our curriculum aligns with our values of fostering fitness, fun, self-defence and life skills. Why did you get into the business? I am passionate about martial arts and its positive impact on individuals. I wanted to share the benefits of taekwondo, such as focus, respect, confidence, discipline and indomitable spirit, with others and empower them to achieve their full potential. How does your organization plan to grow? We aim to continuously refine our curriculum, engage with the community and potentially expand to new locations. We aim to reach as many individuals as possible and provide them with transformative and impactful martial arts programs. How does it support others? Endurance Taekwondo supports its students by providing a positive and supportive atmosphere that encompasses not just martial arts techniques but also life skills and character development. We believe in nurturing the whole individual, both physically and mentally. Where do you shop in the Tri-Cities? I have three businesses in the Tri-Cities, don’t make me

choose! It is a real pleasure spending time in each city. I have my favourite pho restaurants, cafes and produce spots in each city. I love exposing my staff to different cool spots in each community. What Tri-City sports groups do you cheer for? While my primary passion is taekwondo, we support local sports teams and athletes in the Tri-Cities, celebrating their achievements and dedication. We have many members of our community who are a part of various local sports teams. We love sponsoring local athletes and teams who are members of our taekwondo family. Sports and martial arts are paramount to a healthy and happy community. What Tri-City arts events and festivals do you attend? My favourite to attend is Port Moody’s Car-Free Day. I can’t wait until it comes back. What non-profit groups do you volunteer for? We’ve donated and fundraised in the past to the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation and the Port Moody Firefighters Foundation; both are great causes. Where can we see you in the community? You can often find me at one of our Endurance Taekwondo locations in Port Moody, Burquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Vancouver. Additionally, I participate in local tournaments, seminars and community outreach programs to promote the benefits of martial arts.
