he traditional theater building acts as a social hub for interaction and artistic expression surrounding performances. The contemporary theater should strive to augment these ideals by extending the life of the building to be experienced and inhabited outside of scheduled performances. In order to facilitate a constant engagement of performer and audience, the architecture of the contemporary theater should be complimentary of the program within.

There is no need for highly ornate spaces and ego driven masses, but rather a sophisticated level of detail articulation and spaces that invite spectators and respect an artist’s performance.

In these claims, we believe the design process can lead to a built intervention that is integrated with its surroundings and nestles well into the environment in which it exists. The contemporary theater is not a structure to demonstrate wealth and power, but an arrangement of spaces that focuses on the production, viewing, and interaction with the art of performance.

Rather than being an independent, stand-alone structure, the contemporary theatre thus becomes a complex of spaces with various functions, blending with its surroundings and creating positive public space to be occupied by the community.

In keeping with these ideas, today’s theater contrasts with structures such as Disney Concert Hall and Sydney Opera House. The Sydney Opera House can be perceived for its independent nature, being constructed on a protrusion into the bay with the surrounding plaza having little physical connection to the city.

The lack of contextual interaction could lead to the imagining that the Sydney Opera House could be torn down and rebuilt at any seaside location and bare success. This idea to strive away from an overpowering stand-alone structure has directed us to a built intervention that can begin to integrate more within its site and context, and thus the community in which it engages.

The contemporary theater should be adapted to its context. The Wyly Theatre in Dallas is a great example of this synthesis of a building with its environment. While the theater space is flexible to change and accommodate multiple stage arrangements, the mass of the structure and program layout is integrated into its surroundings. The entry sequence engages the public by creating an open plaza that blends into the lobby below the theater. The theater is placed at street level, creating a visual connection for spectators within the theater to the city as well as occupants of the city into the performance space of the Wyly. The Theater’s form takes on that of a mid-rise tower similar to neighboring downtown buildings, with the program being arranged to fit within. The contemporary theater should be respectful to its surroundings. The Kursaal Convention Center

by Rafael Moneo achieves a similar contextual engagement with the massing being influenced by the scale of the city block of San Sebastian.

The masses are then shifted to allow for the creation of new spaces including multiple plazas as well as circulation space. Frank Lloyd Wright achieved a similar break in scale by manipulating the circulation through Unity Temple.

The entry sequence and circulation space severs the building into two distinct masses with separate program; one being a sanctuary and assembly space and the other being a fellowship hall.

The site located in the River Arts District in Asheville, NC offers a unique opportunity and landscape for a performing arts center to be integrated. The riverfront location evokes a parklike setting that is in need of an element to connect the neighborhood to the downtown along with connecting elements within the neighborhood. The performing arts center could begin to integrate with context by taking on a respectful scale, while also being transparent with the community in the performance process taking place within the complex.
