Remember, our region thrives because of each and every one of you. Your contributions, support, and enthusiasm make a significant impact on our shared goals and the communities we serve in the Significant Southeast Region.

It is my hope that each chapter take some time to plan for your 2023-2024 sorority year. Please plan some kind of bonding activities, as you plan your programs and projects for the upcoming year. The success of your chapter depends on how well you plan.

We hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the beauty of the summer. Its time to catch up on all the exciting happenings within the Southeast Region, as we continue to strive for excellence in our sorority.

As part of our commitment to continuous learning and professional development, we have our Southeast Region Leadership Institute up and running where you are able to earn a total of 19 CEUs. The modules will cover a variety of leadership subjects, including the latest advancements in nursing leadership practices, effective communication strategies, organizational development. Stay turned for more details, please note that you can work at your own pace to complete the modules.

Epsilon Chapter, Tuskegee, AL

During the months of April and May, Epsilon Chapter participated in several events in the Macon County community including Taste of the Wild, 4th Annual Arts & Literacy Explosion and the George Washington Carver Arts & Crafts Festival. Participants at these events were able to have blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol screenings performed. Participants also received health information.

On April 27, 2023, Epsilon Chapter offered a webinar to its members to learn more about the All of Us Research Program. Atiya Shahid, MS, MPH, PhD candidate was the guest speaker and presented on “Her Story & The Importance of Research”.

Wednesday, May 3, 2023, marked the 84th anniversary of the chartering of the Epsilon Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. at the Nurses Home at the Tuskegee Veterans Administration Hospital in 1939. On Sunday May 7th, 2023, the members of Epsilon Chapter held their annual anniversary and Nurses Week celebration at the Tuskegee Municipal Complex. During this annual celebration, Epsilon Chapter honors its members with service awards. Outstanding

members are also recognized with the Nurse of the Year and Sisterhood Awards. Community members who have made a significant impact in the Macon County community are acknowledged with the Humanitarian Award.

The 2023 Sisterhood Award recipient was Soror Kadawn RussellYoung. Soror RussellYoung was selected for this honor in recognition of her

dedication and commitment to the programs and projects of the chapter as well as her congenial spirit that she consistently demonstrates in all that she does while supporting the numerous chapter service events throughout Tuskegee/Macon County.

The awardees for 5 years of service were: Sorors Kristin Ashley, Bertha Baker, Gwendolyn Wallace, Sonya Watson, and Gwendolyn White. The awardee for 25 years of service was Soror Arcola Perry. The awardee for 45 years of service was Soror Shirley McRae. Soror Beatrice Scruggs was recognized for 55 years of service.

The recipient of the 2023 Nurse of the Year was Soror Sonya Watson. Identifying the need to increase fundraising in support of scholarships for Tuskegee University nursing students, Soror Watson implemented the “ Turtlely Awesome” committee which designs and sells sorority jewelry and paraphernalia. This venture has proven very successful as the chapter was able to increase scholarship fund-

The Humanitarian Award is the highest honor offered by Epsilon Chapter. It is given annually to a local person or organization who has rendered valuable “Service for Humanity”. The recipient for 2023 is Ms. Doretha Heard. Ms. Heard is Co-Founder of the Macon MEANS Cancer Support organization. This organization has helped numerous people with various cancer diagnoses in the Tuskegee /Macon County community find resources and support to improve their quality of life during their cancer treatment.

On June 10, 2023, Epsilon Chapter participated in the Prostate Cancer/Men’s Health Awareness Program at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Tuskegee, AL. Blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol screenings were performed. Participants also received information regarding the All of US Research program.

Epsilon Beta Chapter demonstrated CPR and First Aid training to Tuskegee University students. Participants had the opportunity to use the mannequins with feedback devices and to practice compressions and receive instant feedback on their technique.

In April 2023, Epsilon Beta Chapter partnered with the Lambda Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and provided sexual health information to students on the campus of Tuskegee University.

In May 2023, the chapter participated in the Council of National Service Organizations (CONSO) cookout to increase campus presence and visibility.

May 2023, Iota Chapter participated in the community health fait at Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.

Our ‘Walking for Health’ event was held on April 15, 2023. The early morning walk started at 9:00 A.M., and was held at Betty T. Ferguson Recreational complex. The walkers included sorors, family members and friends. Proceeds from the walk support our scholarship fund.

On April 11, 2023 Soror Yvonne Parker, Chairperson of Education committee, provided “Blood Pressure and Heart Health” talk at New Way Church in Miami Gardens. New Way (Yvonne Parker, RN, BSN, MSM- HS) is the home church of Soror Parker.

On May 23, 2023, Soror Jan Pierre-Jerome was the guest speaker on Mental Health for the AARP Opa Locka Chapter.

Kidney Sunday recognition was held on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Sorors Rhonda Evans, Carmen Germany, Tiffany Johnson, Terrie Moody and Mechele Neal represented the chapter by working with the Tennessee Kidney Foundation.

On April 11, 2023, Alpha Chi Chapter participated in Tennessee State University’s new member induction ceremony of Pi Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society of Nursing. Soror Beverly Brown is the Chapter President Soror Mamie Williams was the keynote speaker. Her topic was “Development of a Successful Career and Reputation in Nursing and Health Care”. Soror Virginia McClain served as mistress of ceremonies. Others in attendance were Sorors Donna Kenerson, Mary Pleas, Kimberley Slaughter and Betty Wilson.

May 4, 2023 found Sorors Tonya Wilson and Virginia McClain participating in the Isaac Litton Middle School Health Fair. In addition to health tips and healthy snacks requested, ‘give aways’ were provided and very much appreciated by the students.

Sigma Chapter walked to help raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis.

Sigma Chapter joined with their partner, the MyVillage Project, to celebrate and recognize outstanding students. Congratulations to all the students that were recognized.

Sorors Betty Wilson and Virginia McClain participated in the ISOA Beem Career Fair at Ida B. Wells Elementary School on May 5, 2023. The importance of professional nurses was explained to the students, as well as courses required for admission to nursing school. Healthy snacks were provided.

May 6, 2023 saw Sorors Samantha Agee, Lisa Humphrey, Mechele Neal, Sharon Pendleton and Tonise Robinson serving the community with health education and blood pressure checks at Nashville Masonic Order of Eastern Star District

After collecting toiletries from the chapter, Soror Mechele Neal delivered our large basket to American Health Communities (AHC) Cumberland on May 16, 2023. AHC is a long-term care facility that Alpha Chi Chapter supports annually.

Sorors Kelli Fleming, Lisa Humphrey and Mechele Neal provided health education and took blood pressures at the 3rd Annual FunFitness Dance Exercise Event at Camp Widgiwagan on June 10, 2023 . The event was a day of fun at Music City’s largest synchronized dance exercise, promoting health and wellness. In addition, it raised awareness on diabetes prevention. Cooking demonstrations with samples and refreshments were provided. The event was sponsored by the Dorothy Marie Kinnard Foundation.

Soror Samantha Agee who celebrated her retirement from the US Army on April 15, 2023.

Soror Beverly Davidson who was honored by the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis, TN as the 2023 Preceptor of the Year.

Soror Michelle Griffin who began her tenure as the 20232024 President of the local chapter of Middle Tennessee Association of periOperative Nurses (AORN) on June 13, 2023. She is the first Black President of the chapter. Soror Griffin was also inducted into the WGU Chapter of STTI Honor Society of Nursing on June 14, 2023 and has been nominated for the National AORN nominating committee.

Soror Mamie Williams who has been named Co-Chair of the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation (HNHN) Advisory Committee.

Lupus is a chronic auto immune disease causing inflammation and pain all over the body. Anyone can be affected by lupus, but it is more prevalent in women ages 15 to 44. On April 29, 2023, Gamma Chi Chapter participated in the 2023 Walk to End Lupus Now sponsored by the Lupus Foundation of America. The event took place in Piedmont Park located in beautiful midtown Atlanta. There were 10 sorors and 1 frater in attendance to provide blood pressure screenings, heart health education and purple lupus awareness socks to the participants. Four members made up the Gamma Chi Stompers who joined in the 1.5 mile course around the park. We did 112 blood pressure screenings and 0 referrals. Participants were appreciative of the heart health education. Participants commented that as a result of our education they will be med compliant and keep doctor’s appointments. They also appreciated the education about preventing heat exhaustion.

Gamma Chi Chapter was thrilled to hold the 35thAnnual Nurse Week Scholarship Awards Luncheon on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the DeKalb Conference Center, 49 North Indian Creek Drive, Clarkston, Georgia 30021. The theme for the luncheon was, “A Celebration of Nurses: Reflections on the COVID-19 Pandemic”. Gamma Chi produced a very touching video tribute highlighting and documenting our members’ stories, experiences, and insights that have filled the last few years with challenges, sacrifices, and tremendous courage. The luncheon is our chapter’s signature event. Our organization promotes academic excellence, and during the luncheon we awarded the Bellamy, Rowser, Binns Chi Fellows Scholarship, the Amerigroup Rural Health Scholarship, and the Mary O. Thomas Community Service Scholarship. In addition, awards were presented to the Unsung Hero, the Mary O. Thomas Creativity and Innovation Award, the 2023 Nurse of the Year Award, and the Mary Ola Thomas Community Service Award. Atotal of $17,000.00 was given in nursing students scholarships.

The Silent Auction was a huge success! More than 100 items were donated, which resulted in more than $1000 raised. This year, we were able to resume our traditional Sunday Fellowship, which included attending worship service at Impact Church in College Park, Georgia and brunch

at The Spice House. There were approximately 30 members who participated in the Sunday Fellowship.

The Leadership Development Information Exchange Day was held on Saturday June 24, 2023 at the GNA Headquarters. The theme was: "Connect, Engage, Progress with Purpose." The event was hybrid with 38 members in person and 4 members who attended virtually. We started the program off with a fun icebreaker by Soror Angela Ward. Members played a game of Gamma Chi trivia on Kahoot. Soror Mary Gainey was the lucky winner. Soror Ward also provided a delegate briefing with roles and responsibilities of delegates who will be attending Boulé. Sorors Bridgett Stroud and Sandra Leonard conducted workshops on increasing volunteerism and connecting and engaging members. There were interactive sessions and small group activities during the workshops. Soror DuShon Copper gave a review of budget basics. Soror Georgia Jackson gave a review of leadership and followership. There were prizes and giveaways and lunch was served. The workshops and presentations were very informative and positive feedback was given by all. Members were energized to do great things with our programs and projects. There were 3.0 CEUs awarded.

Hypertension screening is one of the premier programs performed by the Gamma Chi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority incorporated. Gamma Chi started the 2023-2024 Sorority year by providing education and blood pressure screening to 22 people as a part of the Barber and Beauty Salon program in partnership with the American Heart Association of Georgia. The event was held at Opulence Hair Studio located at 3910 Flat Shoals Parkway in Decatur Georgia on June 3,2023. Sorors in attendance were; Trina Pitts Braun, Tishana Gary, Sonjile James, Yvonne Harris, Kim Hawkins and Wendy Parrish.

Alzheimer’s TN Walk-Saturday April 22nd at UT Gardens

Upsilon Chi Chapter began our spring service projects with participation in the Alzheimer’s Tennessee Walk on Saturday, April 22nd at the University of Tennessee Gardens. Soror Graham participated and raised $100 for the organization

Mega Vaccine Clinic-April 19th

This was the final push to get COVID-19 shots before the public health emergency expired on May 11th. Upsilon Chi Chapter has collaborated since the beginning of COVID-19 vaccinations to get the Knoxville community vaccinated and focused on getting AfricanAmericans, Latinos, and other underserved community members immunized

Medic Blood Drive-Saturday April 29th at Overcomers Believers Church

Upsilon Chi Chapter partnered with Medic during the recent blood drive to get minority blood donors. Our chapter provided information to the public about the importance of African Americans donating blood for other African Americans and, in particular, sickle cell disease patients. In addition, the members used this opportunity to check blood pressures and council participants in the importance of controlling hypertension, making lifestyle changes, and adhering to medication regimens. The chapter was highlighted in The Tennessee Tribune newspaper for these efforts. We also provided visual content to a public service announcement by Medic to encourage blood donations.

Installation of new officers for 2023-2024

Soror Darneta G. Brown conducted the installation of Upsilon Chi Chapter’s newly elected officers on Saturday, May 6th. Chapter officers included Basileus-Soror Bonnie Graham, Epistoleus-Soror Lisa Faulkner, Tamiochus-Soror Janice Deathridge, and Dean of Membership-Soror Donna Billingsley. Each newly elected officer affirmed their pledge and oath to serve Upsilon Chi Chapter to the best of their God-given abilities.

Nurses’ Day Celebration-Saturday, May 6th at Mt Olive Baptist Church

This year Upsilon Chi used our Nurses’ Day Celebration to honor all nurses who have worked tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic. We celebrated and acknowledged all nurses who served their communities and paid the ultimate price for their patients. Our chapter also used this time to affirm our members who are unsung heroes in many areas of the nursing profession. We salute you all!

The Nurses’ Day Celebration would not be complete without an active attempt to reclaim our nonfinancial sisters. We encouraged all we could reach to come celebrate our profession together. Some answered the call, and we are grateful and happy they did. We also extended our invitation to nurses who were interested in learning more about Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated.

Guest Speaker May 18th for Faith Leaders Church Initiative

Soror Betty Blackman presented to the Faith Leaders Church Initiative “The Role of Nurses

During the Pandemic and the State of Nursing

Now.” Soror Blackman gave insight into the nursing role as it expanded during the pandemic and how the state of nursing was impacted by the pandemic. She also discussed the future of nursing as a profession and what should be considered in recruiting more African American nurse educators.

Upsilon Chi continues to volunteer to serve our community by providing blood pressure checks and COVID-19 boosters. Our motto of Service for Humanity has no expiration date. We serve whenever and wherever we can meet the health needs of our community. This event celebrated urban families and had a positive message for all in attendance. At this event, a host of services were provided in addition to what Upsilon Chi provided. Our visibility has increased tremendously since the pandemic rather than diminished. We believe in serving in good or bad weather, mega or mini clinics, pandemic or not.

Attended the TN Revenue Webinar for Nonprofits-Tuesday, May 30th

Soror Bonnie Graham attended the virtual webinar on the Tennessee Taxation of Nonprofit Organizations in Tennessee. This 40-page document provided vital information for nonprofit organizations operating in Tennessee. It included sales and use taxes, nonprofit exemptions, continuing education courses offered by nonprofits, plus much more. Since Upsilon Chi Chapter is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit group, it was important to learn the current provisions under Tennessee law.

Sorors Carolyn Tabors, Anti-Basileus and Bonnie Graham, Basileus, recorded a public service announcement for Medic that highlighted the need for blood donations by African Americans for those with sickle cell disease and other blood needs. The PSA focused on African American organizations encouraging the community to donate to save lives our lives!!!

Annual Chapter Picnic-Saturday, June 3

The Upsilon Chi Chapter annual picnic was held on Saturday, June 3rd at New Harvest Park. The picnic is a time for sorors, family members, and friends to fellowship together and get to know each other better. It is also a time for recruitment and retention for Upsilon Chi. Nonfinancial sorors are invited to attend as well as those interested in learning more about and joining Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. Each year we celebrate our sororal year achievements with food, games, and park activities that includes a splash pad, swings, etc. There is something for all age groups.

Good food and great fellowship!

Open Streets Knoxville Sunday, June 4th Open Streets Knoxville brings together community groups and local businesses giving people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to walk, ride bikes, hula hoop, and much more in a setting that is fun and safe. It is a safe, fun, and family-oriented event for residents to explore their neighborhood and local businesses within the neighborhood. During Open Streets there is at least a one-mile route on Knoxville streets closed to traffic so the community can enter the streets and engage with one another safely.

Volunteer Celebration by I am the Voice of the Voiceless-Saturday, June 10th

This event was a celebration of all the volunteers who helped during the pandemic. It was a huge “Thank you” for all the long hours of service given to support vaccination of our community. Mrs. Vivian Shipe of I am the Voice of the Voiceless said this was a time to gather and remember where we’ve been and who did not make it and thank God for our coming through it. Juneteenth and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Celebration-Monday, June 19th

The Knoxville King Commemorative Commission held a joint MLK parade celebration with the Juneteenth event. The combining of these events (in January the weather is very unpredictable) helped add to the large turnout. However, this June, there was heavy rain. There is no way to outsmart Mother Nature. Nevertheless, we walked and celebrated in the rain. 

Open Streets is a community-wide event held in a different section of Knoxville each year. The purpose is to get communities outside and being active and to encourage healthy lifestyles Upsilon Chi’s table focused on healthy eating and games for children. Soror Graham and granddaughter, Kai, attended. A very special event that encouraged walking, cycling, and being active. The Boy Scouts Council Saturday, June 24th Sorors Carolyn Tabors and Beverly Finch supported the Scouts (boys and girls) Day Camp event on June 24th. Sorors verified any food allergies, checked lunches and snacks for peanut products and removed them, identified those children who needed or used inhalers, and provided first aid as needed. The Day Camp was from 10am4pm.

Upsilon Chi Chapter continues to meet our goals of Service for Humanity by increasing chapter visibility, establishing partnerships with other community service organizations, and promoting affordable healthcare for all. Recruitment and retention remain one of our highest priorities as well. The chapter strives to meet all National Initiatives and do so with excellence and dignity as we represent our Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated.

Phi Chi members attended the Homegoing Service for Soror Penelope Wilkins’ mother-in-law on April 1, 2023. Eight sorors (CatrinaCrawford, Shelia Hall, Tara Johnson, Carolyn Lightfoot, Marcia Lowe, Linda Scott, Lorraine Stephens, and Victoria Burt) traveled to Campobello, SC for the home going services of Eunice Wilkins, mother-in-law of Penelope Wilkins. The services were held at New Bedford Baptist Church at 1:00 PM. The Rev. Dr. Bobby R. Caldwell as Pastor did the eulogy. The Order of Services was short and sweet and included several old-time songs accompanied by a bass guitarist.

Sisterly togetherness continued as the eight sorors dined together in sisterly love and dedication to each other after leaving the funeral.

A Documentary, Panel Discussion featuring Dr.

Donna Adams, PhD, MD was held on April 16, 2023. “Every Mother Deserves a Beautiful Birth Story” was in the Lee Auditorium of Augusta University. Dr. Donna Adams-Pickett is a local obstetrician/gynecologist practicing here in Augusta, GA. She hosted a viewing and panel discussion featuring her full length documentary called "Birthing Justice." It is a look at the current Black maternal mortality crisis affecting the country, it was produced by Olympian Allison Felix. Soror Jennifer Bell-Woodley, DNP, volunteered to be a panelist for Phi Chi Chapter, Incorporated.

The Health Advocacy and Social Policy Committee of Phi Chi engaged in Part 1 of a Public Policy Forum Partnership with Zeta Xi Omega, Mu Zeta and Zeta Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Augusta Alumnae Chapter along with Phi Chi Chapter. The multi-groups hosted a public policy forum, ‘Community Conversations on Policing: Knowing Your Rights’ on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel, Paine College. The purpose of this forum was to facilitate an open, safe, space to have a conversation on policing in America, encourage honest dialogue about applicable laws and recommending approaches to law enforcement encounters.

June 1, 2023. The forum included a panel discussion that centered around strategies teenagers should keep in mind to help ensure safe and appropriate interactions with law enforcement.

Soror Lorraine Stephens, Basileus delivered the welcome and introduced the moderator. Other sorors in attendance were Barbara Welcher, Ella Ealy, Antonia Autry, Gwen Allen, and Gwen Taylor.

Sorors Gwen Taylor and Sheila Hall appeared on the Jennie Montgomery Show on WJBF TV leading up to nurse’s week. They shared information concerning nurses and what propelled them to become nurses. Additionally, they shared pertinent information about this sorority. They discussed several of our national programs and they explained so of our community services including health screenings, health education, and we will participate wherever we’re asked e.g., local churches, community centers, etc. the show aired on May 3 and 9, 2023.

Phi Chi participated in the Spring into Health! Community Care Health Fair on April 29, 2023. This community health fair was held at Good Shepherd Baptist Church. This event was sponsored by Augusta University, the CHEST Foundation, and three local black churches. The event was part of a research project to raise awareness of COPD and improve lung health in the African American Community. Free health screenings included BP checks, blood sugar, bone density, height/weight, vision/hearing, COPD and more

Phi Chi Chapter participated/Attended the Golden Blocks Block Party Health and Resources Fair held at Wallace Branch Library on May 6, 2023. There was an opportunity to get your cholesterol checked, be tested for HIV, sign up to be a part of studies and get a free session with a personal trainer. Entertainment was provided several local artists.

Dr. Mac Bowman spoke to the crowd about hypertension, proper diet and exercise. His message was “Know Your Numbers.” Lanier’s Meat Market provided lunch and Tabernacle Baptist Church assisted packing and passing out lunch.

Phi Chi was well represented. We were able to educate on the importance of taking your blood pressure medication as it is prescribed as well as conducting screenings.. This was a very successful event

Phi Chi attended Worship/Communion Service in honor of Nurse’s Week Celebration with the Greater Young Zion Baptist Church, Augusta, GA with Rev. William Blount-Pastor on May 7, 2023. Seventeen sorors represented the chapter in beautiful green and yellow attire. There were also six family members in attendance. A picture of chapter members was shown overhead/virtually along with a brief introduction to Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated to include our mission during the welcoming/introduction of the chapter.

Rev. Blount’s Sermon: Moses’ Leadership Exodus 32:7-8. Phi Chi presented $200.00 to the church offering. Appreciation remarks were made to Pastor Blount and the congregation for their warm welcome.

Soror Sarah Glover was not in attendance with the other sorors but she dressed in sorority colors and mentioned the sorority during the service she attended at Virgin Mary Baptist Church, Allendale, SC.

Phi Chi celebrated our 46th Chartering Anniversary at the Pinnacle Club on May 20, 2023. This hybrid event paid homage to our thirty-four (34) founding members who did the leg work - those courageous nurses who dared to dream and act on May 21, 1977, to establish a chapter of this great sisterhood. SororBeard(who is totally blind) is always so pleased to be among sorors, mostly ones that she does not know, but she is always eager to explain her journey and compare/ contrast it with the nurses of today. (Soror Beard will be 99 y/o in Nov, she has a lot of history behind her and can explain everything about her education/jobs/situations etc. she endured. Check her out on google). SororMaryland expressed her memory of Phi Chi’s long, rich history and how it doesn’t seem like it’s been forty-six years. Phi Chi coordinated/participated/attended the 2nd Annual Tabernacle Kingdom Living Mental Health and Wellness Fair on May 20, 2023. Tabernacle is offering free Mental Health services for anyone in need. During the Kingdom Living Mental Health and Wellness Fair, participants were offered immediate and future services at no charge. Over 300 people attended, and a dozen participants utilized the free services the day of the event. The Medical Ministry was asked to Triage event goers. Phi Chi had representation at check in, during the Teen Break Out Sessions and in the fellowship hall during the main sessions. Chi Eta Phi was wellrepresented, both active and inactive members were in attendance.

The Webinar was Coordinated by Soror Samantha Agee, 2nd Supreme Anti Basileus and was open to all of XHO’s chapters. Soror Carolyn Lightfoot opened her home for some sisterly fellowship and crafting activities on June 3, 2023. She had a delicious meal that she personally prepared and served on Fine China. The sorors in attendance were Sheila Smith, Catrina Crawford, Penelope Wilkins, Carolyn Byrd, Karen Ryans and Victoria Burt. All had a great time fellowshipping and encouraging one another before and during the meal. Afterwards they were seated around a craft table to make beautiful bags from placemats under the directions of Soror Sheila Smith. This was true Phi Chi love in action.

Phi Chi participated in the Community Health Fair at Old Storm Branch Baptist Church on June 3, 2023. Soror (Rev) Beatrice Olden, began the adult segment presentations with “Gerontology –Aging and You”. This information was very informative and well received. It included resources for assistance for the elderly/needy. SororCarolyn Byrd was not on to speak, but she was busy making healthy smoothies and instructing the attendees on healthy eating habits/foods. Sorors Carolyn Lightfoot was one of the facilitators.

Phi Chi was certainly busy on June 17, 2023 as we participated in three Juneteenth Events.

2023 Juneteenth Parade, Augusta, GA

June 19, 2023 is the 2nd year Juneteenth was designate as a federal holiday. Phi Chi Chapter was proud to help celebrate the historic holiday as a participant in the parade. Sorors Gwen Smith, Kim Washington and Beulah Nash-Teachey represented Phi Chi in style by sporting the sorority colors, talking with the bystanders and sharing candy with the little ones and the young at heart along the route.

Fathers’ Day 5 K Fun Run

Sorors Karen Ryans, Sarah Glover and Kim Washington were available to provide first aid as needed at various stations along the path of the run. There were approximately 150 participants in the run.

Vision 2020 & Beyond requested that Phi Chi Chapter provide community service again this year. Phi Chi spearheaded the First Aid and Wellness Booth. Blood pressure checks and stroke prevention education was presented at the Old Macedonia Baptist Church on June 21, 2023 by Sorors Carolyn Byrd and Betty Settles. Two participants were referred to their physicians due to elevated blood pressures. Handouts were given to each participant. Twentyfive participants were in attendance.

Each one of our sorority sisters enjoyed the evening with the patients as we spoke to them about Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated and handed them a card with a smile. This was a great community service project in the name of Service for Humanity and a smile!

Psi Chi Chapter with our partners’, The Families and Communities Together (FACT) in Salisbury, NC held a camp. Sorors monitor the kids for health incidents, provide education and BPs for adults attending classes as well as the children and teens. The Reading Science and Creative Expressions Camp ran from 9:00 am -1:00 pm June 5-9 at the Walls Center where the Worship Institute is held on Livingstone College 800 W. Thomas Street, Salisbury, NC 28144 .

Velma Dianne Archie Fields filled any room she entered with her joyous spirit, distinct laugh, and infectious smile. Her heart was one that actively loved her closeknit family, writing poetry, music, her nursing profession, and dutifully serving in the church. Most importantly, her heart loved God and she lived by His promises. Born on January 10, 1945, as the fourth child of the late Charles & Ella Ruth Archie in Winston- Salem, NC, Velma was one of nine bright and shining stars. Velma traded her earthly presence for eternal life with our Lord and Savior on Friday, May 26, 2023.

Melissa Marie Bellamy, MSN, APRN, FNP-C is the proud owner of Bellamy Family Healthcare, PLLC that is set to open to serve the surrounding community of Mooresville, North Carolina. Bellamy Family Healthcare will be accepting patients from newborns to the older populations providing a variety of medical services such as weight loss management, meeting the gap of the preventative healthcare services, but with a specialization in caring for patient’s whole health to include body, mind, and spirit

Melissa continues to remain active in the surrounding communities. She is a committed member of the Psi Chi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated and serves as the Dean of Membership for her chapter. Melissa also founded the Black Nurses Rock Greater Charlotte Chapter in August 2019, where nurses serve and fill in the gaps of the Greater Charlotte area. Melissa teaches as an Adjunct professor at Northern Kentucky University for their Family Nurse Practitioner Program. Lastly, she is a member of the Nu Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Melissa believes that you can do anything you put your mind to! Always be determined, stay focused, and be humble. Continue to keep GOD at the center of your life, love your family, and just give your all. Eta Phi Chapter, Mobile, AL

April was a very busy month for the members of Eta Phi Chapter as they participated in various “Service for Humanity” activities. On April 22nd , eight members participated in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Delta Walk with AIDS South Alabama.

:May was all about fellowship, food, and fun as the chapter celebrated Nurses Day/Month.

Following the walk, the members surprised Soror Alice Lewis Hutchinson at her home with her 30year membership plaque, and the members ended the afternoon with food and fellowship at a local seafood restaurant, where they were joined by Soror Cynthia Turner, Basileus of Lambda Eta Eta, Huntsville, Al. Soror Turner also participated in the walk. On April 29th, the chapter provided snacks and water for the Mobile Chapter Association for the Blind “Strengthening Our Movement

One Step at a Time Walk”, and the basileus also supported the event as a walker. Eta Phi closed out the month as a sponsor of a hole for the Mobile Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity’s 16th annual golf tournament, “The Joe Smith Memorial Scholarship Tournament.”

During the month of June, the members continue to collect non-perishable food items for the local food pantry, Feeding the Gulf Coast. Eta Phi also supported Boulé with an ad as well as Xi Chapter as they celebrate their 75th anniversary.

KUDOS:

Congratulations to Soror Valencia Patterson, Basileus, as she was selected as Employee of the Month for the month of May for USA Health PreService Department, for showing professionalism, acts of kindness, and her ability to work independently and within a team.

Mu Phi Chapter began April with a collaboration with Morehouse School of Medicine at the Community Health Fair. The health fair was held at the West End Mall in Atlanta, Georgia. The site was chosen to meet the needs of an underserved population. The members of Mu Phi Chapter performed BP screenings and provided education related to heart health, nutrition, and kidney disease. The overall event was a success. Chapter members were able to encourage individuals to follow up with medical providers and directed them to other resources present at the health fair.

Mu Phi Chapter donated children’s books collected by the Chapter to Mother Hubbard’s Day Care Center. Mother Hubbard is in an underserved area in SW Atlanta. The books will establish a small library for the center. The books donated will meet the needs of a wide age group. The books will allow the students to increase their reading skills and provide a means of entertainment and use of their imagination as well as a means of exploration.

Mu Phi also remembered the mothers at Glenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with flowers. The residents often do not have family that is available to visit. The residents are always grateful and look forward to our visits. The nursing staff was also remembered with snacks and inspirational pens with a motivational message.

In May, Mu Phi Chapter collaborated with Samaritan’s Feet International, Amani Women’s Center, and Decatur Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta in World Africa Day. During this event, Mu Phi provided BP screenings, health education, and the distribution of 600 pairs of shoes and socks to the refugee community in Stone Mountain, GA. The participants represented Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Laos, Vietnam, and Burma. Mu Phi also provided a donation of $500 to the event to purchase shoes. This event was a great learning event and interaction of cultures.

Upsilon Phi Chapter presented more than 50 blankets .... some sewn, knitted, crocheted, others purchased ..... to McLeod Regional Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in commemoration of the Sorority’s partnership with the March of Dimes and the Chapter’s community partnership with Pee Dee Healthy Start.

Oh, what a fellowship, what a joy divine. “Pot Luck” Supper upon closure of the 20222023 business year ‘chapter’ meeting.

Soror Brenda Wisdom Riley attends the Delaine Community Retirement center and monthly she provides up to 30 seniors with important information that impacts senior living. She has provided information on Stroke, Heart Disease and Alzheimer's and Dementia. The seniors at this community center often have may question for Soror Brenda and she provides answers or resources to get the answers for the seniors.

Soror Dorothy Lawson provides education monthly to the community via the JMBC Newsletter. JMBC is one the largest and oldest churches in Sumter, SC. There are more than 500 members that attend JMBC Church and the Blueprint Youth Ministries. Sample newsletter article included below.

Rho Phi Chapter has been involved in many health promotion and disease prevention and community service events through this second quarter of 2023. Sorors participated in a Community Health Fair on 04/15/2023 in Raleigh, NC. The chapter did blood pressures, disseminated health information, and discussed smoke alarm use and fire safety.

Soror Connie Levister, MA, BSN, RN was inducted into the “Golden Aggies,” at North Carolina A & T State University on 05/13/2023.

Sorors walked and contributed monies toward clean water for Africa at the 6K Global walk for water in conjunction with Watts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church on 05/20/2023.

For Kidney Sunday, sorors took blood pressures and disseminated information about kidney disease at the Poplar Springs Christian Church in Raleigh, NC in conjunction with the First Aid and Health Ministry on 05/21/2023.

Rho Phi checked blood pressures at the Men's Health Event on 6/10/23 at St Matthew Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. Sorors also volunteered and checked blood pressures as part of the “Summer Give Back” on 6/10/2023 in Wake Forest, NC.

On 6/17/2023, chapter members took blood pressures as part of the “Spring Fling & Fitness for Breast Health Awareness” hosted by Sister to Sister Alliance. On 6/24/2023 Rho Phi participated in Community Day at the Southeastern Wake Adult Day Center in Raleigh serving as medical support volunteers.

Rho Phi Chapter supported the March of Dimes Walk and Fundraiser on 4/15/2023. Rho Phi had two members walk and the Chapter raised $1024.00.

Two Sorors completed advanced education programs. Soror Roxanne Bryant, DNP, FNP-C, Rho Phi Anti-Basileus completed a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on 5/12/2023. Soror Dominique McLean graduated with an MSN, FNP degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA on 06/17/2023.
