See you at the ballpark soon,
Jeff Hurley PresidentThe former Thunder Manager credits his three years in Trenton for his successful Major League and Minor League Career.
We caught up with former Thunder Manager DeMarlo Hale at Citizens Bank Park in May, when the Toronto Blue Jays came in to play the Phillies. DeMarlo, who managed the Thunder from 1997-1999, is now the Associate Manager of the Blue Jays.
In 1997, DeMarlo became the third Manager in Thunder history, after Tom Runnells and Ken Macha. He was promoted from Single-A Sarasota by the Red Sox. In his first two seasons with the Thunder, the team finished with identical 71-70 records and they finished in 4th place both times. Among the Future Major Leaguers on those clubs was Lou Merloni, Wilton Veras, Robert Ramsay, Jin Ho Cho and Dernell Stenson. DeMarlo reminisced about Stenson, who was tragically killed during the Arizona Fall League Season in 2003 after making his MLB Debut for the Reds during the Summer. “He had a great approach to the game and that allowed him to be a good hitter at that stage of his career. We can only wonder what would have happened with him in the Majors... but he was definitely a Big-League player.”
In 1999, DeMarlo led the Thunder to an incredible 92-50 record. With players like David Eckstein, Adam Everett, Shea Hillenbrand, Raul Gonzalez and Rafael Betancourt, the Thunder were named Baseball America’s Team of the Year, and DeMarlo was named Manager of the Year by Baseball America, The Sporting News and USA Today. He also coached the USA Team in the All-Star Futures Game at Fenway Park. “It was a pretty incredible year and the fans and everyone in the front office really made me enjoy it more. Those awards have a treasured place in my home. When people come in and see them up on the mantle, it is very impressive and the comments I get just bring back such good memories.”
After the Thunder, DeMarlo left the Red Sox organization and managed the Rangers Triple-A club in Oklahoma City and then was named the Rangers First Base Coach. He rejoined the Red Sox in 2006 as their Third Base Coach and was a World Series Champion in 2007. His MLB Coaching career continued with the Orioles, Blue Jays, Braves, Guardians and now he is back with the Blue Jays as their Associate Manager. “The Thunder were such a big part of my growth, when I think back on all the years I’ve been in this industry, my time in Trenton was very special to me and it really stands out in my memories.”
DeMarlo was Inducted into the Trenton Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011 and after our interview, he was joined on the field at Citizen’s Bank Park by another member of that Hall of Fame, Phillies broadcaster Tom McCarthy who was the Thunder Broadcaster and Assistant General Manger during DeMarlo’s time in Trenton.
With the inception of the Trenton Thunder in 1994 came a commitment from the organization to be a part of the community in which it was established.
The Thunder have lived up to this commitment with the GRAND SLAM WE CARE FOUNDATION, a 501(c)3 charity, which at the conclusion of the 2023 season, had donated over $9.5 Million worth of goods, services, and monetary donations, through a variety of community programs.

He was featured on MLB Network and NHL Network and dropped the ceremonial puck at the Princeton-Harvard Hockey game at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, NJ.

Minor League Baseball returned to Trenton for the first time in 44 years when the Thunder made their debut at Mercer County Waterfront Park.
The Double-A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers had a tough year on the field playing to a 55-85 record and a last place finish. A bright spot during the season was the play of First Baseman Tony Clark who led the team in almost every offensive category before his promotion to Triple-A in August.
Tony provided Thunder fans with one of the great memories of the 1994 season, when he hit a walk-off grand slam home run into the Delaware River, he was the first player to ever accomplish that feat.
In 2018 Tony returned to Trenton to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Thunder. He is with his former Arizona Teammate, Thunder Manager Jay Bell.
The first two Thunder Stars Tony Clark and Nomar Garciaparra together at Citi Field for the MLB All-Star Game in 2013.
On the 11th Anniversary Season of Chase’s last game, we are celebrating all of our Bat Dogs this season. On Wednesday June 26 and Sunday August 18, the Thunder will become the Trenton GOLDENS. This will honor all four of our Golden Retriever Bat Dogs. Fans can bring their pups on both of these dates and the team will wear special GOLDENS uniforms and hats.
When CHASE-“That Golden Thunder” joined the Thunder in August of 2002, he started a family business that continued with his son DERBY, his grandson ROOKIE and now with young cousin DASH!
Our four generations of Bat Dogs have not only entertained millions of Thunder fans here at home…but they have also attracted fans from all over the world. They have been featured on television, newspapers, magazines and websites for the past 20 years. In September of 2021 Rookie was featured on NBC’s The TODAY SHOW, ABC’s GOOD MORNING AMERICA and MSNBC’S MORNING JOE. Their greatest television appearance was the Emmy Nominated ESPN E-60 show “The Family Business” in 2015. ESPN has continued to run this great Bat Dog Documentary through this year.
The Thunder Bat Dogs are presented by ARM & HAMMER Pet Care Products. They are trained at the Greenleaf Pet resort in Millstone Township, NJ. Their health & wellness is taken care of by Newtown Veterinary Hospital, in Newtown, PA. Their food and treats are from NutriSource Pet Foods.
Different fans have different methods of keeping a scorecard, and many use their own notations, but here’s a simple method.
First, fill in the starting lineup. When the game begins, start in the column corresponding to the correct inning and go to the box next to the name of the batter who is at the plate. If the hitter grounds out to shortstop, for example, write in “6-3,” which shows that the shortstop threw him out at first base. The notation for a fly to left, for example, would be “F7.”
If the batter gets a hit, mark in the hit according to which base he reached. The corners of the box represent the bases, with the lower-right corner being first. If he singles, pencil in a “–” in the lower-right. If he doubles,
pencil in a “=” in the upper-right and so on. If he walks, pencil in “BB” in the lower-right. After the runner reaches each base, fill in the side of the diamond corresponding to the base reached. As the runner advances, continue to fill the lines around the diamond, and mark the appropriate symbol in the appropriate corner.
If a runner scores, put a circle at the bottom of the box, and inside put the symbol of the play and/or the player that knocked him in. For example, if the No. 5 hitter drives in two runs with a single, mark his single in the bottomright of his box and mark a circle with the number “5” inside the boxes of the runners who score. At the end of each inning, total the hits and runs for that inning only. At the end of the game, you will be able to add the innings’ total to arrive at the game score.
singled, advanced to 2nd on next batter’s walk, took 3rd on fielder’s choice, scored on No. 4 batter’s double
walked, later forced out, shortstop to 2nd base reached on fielder’s choice, advanced to 3rd on next batter’s double, scored on No. 5 batter’s single doubled, scored on No. 5 batter’s single singled, advanced to 2nd on next batter’s single, stole 3rd base, thrown out on grounder, shortstop to catcher singled, stole second base reached on 1st on fielder’s choice popped out to 2nd base

Shawn Chacon is no stranger to Trenton as he prepares for his second season as pitching coach after an 8-year Major League career that featured 269 appearances and a 2003 National League All-Star selection with the Colorado Rockies. He’s no stranger to the area after being traded to the New York Yankees from Colorado just before the 2005 trade deadline. In perhaps the most memorable stretch of his career, the righthander went 7-3 with a 2.85 ERA over the final two months of the regular season, helping the Yankees win the A.L. East. In the only postseason start of his career in the Division Series against the Anaheim Angels, Chacon took a no decision in Game 4 to keep the Yankees season alive, allowing just two runs over six-and-a-third innings.
The following year, in 2006, Chacon made a five-inning rehab start for the Thunder on June 4 against the Reading Phillies before returning to the Yankees the following week. He was later traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 31, spending parts of two seasons there before his final Major League season with the Houston Astros in 2008.
Perodin joins the Thunder as the new Hitting Coach after serving in the same role a season ago with the Williamsport Crosscutters. This will be Perodin’s third year coaching in the MLB Draft League, and his second year as hitting coach. In 2022 he served as the outfield and base running coach for Williamsport. Perodin was a 27th round draft pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2002 and spent four seasons in the Twins organization before a five-year Independent League career. He stole 161 bases in his pro-career and batted .277.
Matt Sweeney returns to Trenton’s coaching staff for his second year, after taking over for Chacon in the second half of 2023 while he was expecting the birth of his child. Sweeney, a local product out of Steinert High School, was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 11th round in 2001. Matt pitched for the Single-A Lakewood Blue Claws as well as the Double-A Reading Phillies during his 8-year career. In 2005, Sweeney had one of his best seasons making 13 appearances, including seven starts for Lakewood, finishing the year with a 2.43 earned run average.
In Sweeney’s first season with the Thunder, he saw two of his pitchers’ ink contracts with Major League teams, with both RHP Nick Payero and LHP Jonah Hurney signing with the Cincinnati Reds.

On Wednesday August 9th of last season, the World Famous Savannah Bananas came to Trenton. This was one of the few times when their “BANANA BALL” opponent was an actual Minor League Team and the Thunder didn’t disappoint their standing room only crowd of fans.
There were over 60,000 people trying to order tickets online, and the lucky ones who made it here saw an incredible show. This season the Bananas have moved their show to MLB Stadiums.
2023 was a very special season for Thunder Bat Dog Dash.
He made his on-field debut on July 14 and retrieved three bats in the bottom of the first inning.
He was on the field for more games in the month of August and then joined the fans for many stadium events, including the Introduction of the Trenton GOLDENS Merchandise last month.
Dash continues the great tradition of following in the Paw Steps of Chase, Derby and Rookie, as a Thunder Bat Dog.
