Trenton Arts at Princeton’s (TAP) origins can be traced back to 2017, when six Trenton Central High School students and four Princeton University students began gathering every Saturday morning in Trenton’s Anchor House to form the Trenton Youth Orchestra (TYO).

But TAP didn’t formally exist until 2019, when TYO grew into a larger organization with a mission of bringing together Trenton and Princeton’s artistic communities.

Five years later, our Saturday Morning Arts program now includes 70 Trenton students and 60 Princeton students across Trenton Youth Dancers, Orchestra, Singers, and Theater.

These are their voices.

MADELIN LOPEZ

TRENTON YOUTH SINGERS

Who or what inspires you to create art?

MLD: The art piece is inspired by my experience with Saturday Morning Arts at Princeton. Being part of the group Trenton Youth Singers has motivated me to try new hobbies. I learned to slowly break from the barriers of my anxiety. I’m grateful for the immense support I receive from the mentors and members. In the art, the dove symbolizes peace and freedom. This is inspired by the comfort and patience that the group provides through each

lesson and performance. I appreciate the mentors for giving us freedom in our creativity. The floating orbs represent the audience that shines bright; this is the support and motivation that the audience provides the performer. It’s a nurturing feeling that motivates the performer to continue. The music notes that wrap around my arms symbolize the positive outcome of teamwork. The outcome is music that is genuinely produced by the heart and that transcends the performer and touches the audience. Furthermore, the background

has a black and blue gradient. The dark shade turns into a light blue. This represents the overwhelming anxiety that is slowly tamed by the power and support of teamwork. I believe that teamwork is an essential part of the program that continues to inspire our art.

Madelin Lopez Delcid is a 12th grader at Trenton Central High School. Her relationship with the arts has varied over the years, from coloring and drawing to singing with the Trenton Youth Singers. Creating art helps her release her ideas on paper and explore many new art mediums, including painting, woodburning, and ceramics. She expresses her appreciation and love for people through art, and often creates art for her family and friends. Witnessing their reactions to her work motivates her to continue pursuing her interest in the arts. One interesting fact about Madelin is that she can move the muscles of her ears.

ANNA LIN

TRENTON YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Who or what inspires you to create art?

AL: Through my poem, I describe how God inspired me to make art, and how the things that He has done and created are forms of art. This poem portrays my life testimony of my coming to Christ—which helped me overcome suicidal thoughts at the age of 13—and what I believe that God has in store for me in the future, which is to become a nurse, writer, and violinist/singer. This poem also conveys my message that human life is the masterpiece of the Most High God. How valuable and precious our lives are that

the Creator of creation, God himself, knew us before we were even born and loves us so much for Christ to die for us while we are still sinners (Jeremiah 1:5 and Romans 5:8).

Anna Lin is a 12th grader at Trenton Central High School. She decided to enter the Express the Arts contest because this is her last year of high school, so she wanted to take on a new challenge. She is passionate about her relationship to God.

Artworks of Masterpiece Anna Lin From my mother’s womb, was I, she conceived, Which You that wove me, knew me Before my mother, with my father, planned this masterpiece. Thirteen years into it, was I going to abort this project Before the knowledge of Your love, which I now perceive, Filled this artwork, which no more shall I reject.

You gave me eyes to enjoy the art

That You paint across a sunset sky, Where the light of the afternoon glow cries Its radiance upon the pink-purple cotton clouds. Its beauty fills peace into my heart And confirms Your presence, Your art continuing to abound.

You gave me ears to relish the art That You play through the mourning dove’s coo And the sluggish whisper of the wind on their nest too, And the played notes of their young’s brisk cheeps, A melody that fills joy into my heart And confirms Your movement, that Your hands never sleep.

And now, You give me a pair of hands

To fulfill Your wonderful plans for me, To set music, words, and patients free From music sheets, minds, and illnesses.

Though awful things have also come from these hands, You, in great grace and mercy, are ready to forgive their sins. And now, You give me a mouth

To sing Your praises and shout out the good news On the mountain and in the valley, from raindrops to dew, To pray Your prayers and speak blessings over others. Though curses and lies have also come from this mouth, You, in great love and kindness, speak Your forgiveness greater. So now, let me tune my strings and use my pen and voice

To make artworks. And even if they don’t look exactly like Yours, May they be reference to You and works of Yours. Eighteen years, five years of Your works, this artwork still needs improvement, But it is much brighter and more fulfilled than the thirteen years spent on self-choices, So let the paint of life never stop flowing with Your hand movements.

ROSELYN SAMAYOA

TRENTON YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Who or what inspires you to create art?

RS: This painting is about the Baroque violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte. He visited the orchestra at Trenton Central High School, and after playing one of the pieces he said, “Every time we play this old music, we make it new again.” I chose to paint a dark background because it represents the deep meaning of his words. What he said really resonated with me.

Roselyn Samayoa is an 11th grader at Trenton Central

High School. Painting with acrylics helps her visualize what she feels, organize her mind, and imagine new places. Colors relax her. She entered the contest this year for the opportunity to have her art in a magazine, and to show her mom that everything her mom has supported her through has not been in vain. She is passionate about music, and loves the fact that what she plays might make the listener feel something powerful. Inspired by her music teacher, Mr. Plunkett, she hopes to produce depths of emotion within her listeners.

SHORT PIECE

#1

Songs referenced are “End of Beginning” by Djo and “Big Jet Plane” by Angus & Julia Stone.

“And when I’m back in Chicago, I feel it / Another version of me, I was in it.” I listen to the lyrics of “End of Beginning” by Djo in my honors biology class, and begin to visualize memories in my mind. I smell salt in the air and feel the breeze hitting my face, the sun beaming hot on my skin. Suddenly, I’m in

my country—I’m back home. Something similar also happened not so long ago while listening to the radio on a late night drive with my dad. “Gonna hold ya, Gonna kiss ya in my arms / Gonna take ya, Away from harm,” Angus & Julia Stone sing in “Big Jet Plane,” one of my favorite songs. The lyrics remind me of the warmth of being safe, the soft gaze of someone you love, and the feeling of ardent love my mother carries for me. It’s unbelievable the way music can remind us of wholesome moments we might have forgotten, and that other people’s

lyrics can have an impact on us in a way we never thought could be possible. When I listen to music, I feel inspired by the people surrounding me and the melodies I’m hearing. It makes me feel different emotions with urges to write insanely long essays analyzing songs or outstanding monologues reflecting on my favorite songs. Music inspires me to make art, through the way it has the power to bring together culture, emotion, and people. It is one of the most creative and beautiful things I can imagine.

SHORT PIECE #2

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to play a role in my school’s Halloween show. When I found out I would be doing my first-ever acting performance, the amount of joy I felt was indescribable. Acting has always been one of the most crucial things in my life. Although the experience of interpreting the life of another person can be an enigma, when I’m acting I feel as if it’s

my responsibility to be the best storyteller known to history, and to accurately convey my character by embodying their feelings, thoughts, and expressions. When I’m asked, “What inspires you to create art?” acting is the first thing that comes to my mind. I love being able to be a different person and tell a story in so many unique ways. As a person of color without much representation in the media growing up, a wholesome feeling appears within me when I see actors with my background in the industry. I want to grow up to inspire others. I would like to leave a legacy for a much younger audience, showing them that no matter where you come from or what you look like, acting can be the safest and most creative way to express yourself and find your true identity.

Valentina Estevez Torrez is an 11th grader at Trenton Central High School. Her relationship with the arts has been a journey of selfexpression through theater and creative writing. She

loves being able to share her thoughts and feelings through poetic and artistic outlets. As a first-generation immigrant, Valentina is motivated by her love for her family, and especially her parents. The thought of providing for her parents and giving back to them for everything they’ve done for her drives her forward. Valentina loves meeting new people, developing friendships, and making people feel safe around her. She also has a DoorDash addiction.

BRITANY MASÍS

AGUILAR

Anagnorisis

On a cold night in November, as the minutes passed and the cats meowed to one another, there I was, sitting at my window, looking at the sky, and wondering if I would ever find something for myself.

For so long, I had tried to convince myself to get out of my comfort zone. Every time I did, I felt uncomfortable, like I did not belong there. Then an unknown voice made me come back to the real world, leaving my mind’s chamber of reflection.

“Psss, over here,” the voice whispered. “To your left.”

I looked around, trying to find the mysterious voice, not knowing that what was coming next was going to shock me to the nerve.

“Who’s there?” I responded.

“Hello there, I know this is unusual, but please—there is no reason to be scared.”

The creature behind the voice revealed itself by jumping right in front of me. Before my eyes was the most beautiful black cat I had ever seen in my whole life. Its shiny, soft fur and big, bright, green eyes captivated my attention. For the first time

in a long time, I felt at home.

“Oh! Do you want some food? I could get you some if that’s what you want,” I said, not sure of what to expect next.

“Oh no, I’m fine, I was just with other cats having some plump mice a while ago, you probably heard us talking,” said the cat with no hesitation. “That’s beyond the point though... I’ve seen you sit here silently at this window for a while now, I think. You seemed lost, and I thought I could help you.”

“Well, I do feel lost. For so much time I have tried to find something to make me feel alive, something I genuinely enjoy, but I haven’t had any luck yet. Every time I try to do something out of my comfort zone, I feel terrified and just wanna go back to where I feel comfortable. Also, how are you going to help me? By letting me pet you?” I laughed.

“Come on, try it.”

“What?” I asked, startled.

“If you think petting me is going to help, then go for it,” said the cat, looking at his back.

I hesitated for a couple of seconds, but then I remembered how I’ve always petted stray cats before, so why would this time be any different? I petted the cat and in less than a second, I was no longer sitting at my window; I was standing in a dark room that felt familiar for some reason. I stood there for a couple of seconds before the black cat appeared again and said, “My name is Isis, short for Anagnorisis. Follow me.” So I did. As I was walking, I thought to myself, Anagnorisis? As in the Greek term for epiphany?

All of a sudden Isis stopped, so I did too. The dark room lit up with what seemed to look like the aurora borealis, and within the flashing lights there were memories— painful and joyful moments that throughout my life had been there with me, but that I had ignored. I looked down towards Isis, only to realize he was already looking at me. We stood there in silence

for a couple of minutes, and then he sat down.

“I know you, and I know that you’ve been suppressing yourself. I have seen you night after night after night, sitting at that window and doing nothing but wishing that one day you will find yourself. You are so scared that you’ve stopped living without even realizing it. You’re so used to your internal torment that every time you do something new out of your comfort zone that might make you happy, you feel discomfort and step back again. In embracing your sorrow, you find comfort; in your freedom, you find fear. From the void we come, and to the void we’ll return,” murmured Isis peacefully before disappearing.

That’s when everything fell into place and I realized why this place felt so familiar. I knew this place, I had been here before. This was my chamber of reflection, a chamber that I just now realized was called Anagnorisis. My tragedy was that I had been chained up for so long, but this time, the

place that had terrorized me was going to be the place of my rebirth.

After a while, I realized everything Anagnorisis had said to me was true. We all come from the void of nothingness, so there I found inspiration for my art. Sometimes, I sit at my window hoping that I’ll see Isis again, to thank him for helping me find what I wished for: happiness and comfort, and with them, the gift of art.

MARIE JULES

TRENTON YOUTH DANCERS

Who or what inspires you to create art?

MJ: From the sounds of nature, to the laughter of my family, to the memories of my life, everything around me is used to create art. Life itself is an art form, and I am inspired by it daily. When the sun rises, so do the birds and their songs. The sun’s rays shine upon my canvas, providing light for me. The chirping of birds guides my pencil. I pause and listen to the sounds of nature and the distant laughter of my family, and before I know it, a smile appears on my face. As I’m creating art, my smile grows deeper and a warm and fuzzy feeling surrounds me. When I draw, I try to convey

that same warmth on the paper. Art sometimes takes you to another space that’s different from reality, whether it’s art created by a pencil or art created by a voice.

Who was your favorite SMArts guest and what did you learn from their visit?

MJ: Theater is an art form that uses both the body and the voice. One shift in movement can change the entire tone of a piece. I don’t get to see musical theater often, so that’s why the SMArts guest performance of Something Rotten by the Princeton student groups Theatre Intime and Princeton University Players really

stood out to me. I was blown away by their vocal range. I like how every person in the group had a role in each piece they performed. Musical theater was not something I thought I would be interested in seeing, but thanks to SMArts at Princeton, I was able to really appreciate this beautiful art form.

Marie Jules is an 11th grader at Trenton Central High School. She has always been drawn to the arts, from drawing to dancing. Marie aspires to be a well-rounded artist who continues to grow in her craft while helping others grow as well.

ANGELO VILLAR

ORTIZ

TRENTON YOUTH SINGERS

Who or what inspires you to create art?

AVO: My sister inspires me to create art. She has undoubtedly been my greatest motivator and my best friend these past 17 years. Her love for music and art has shown me that my Mexican heritage can be shared and appreciated through any genre or art form, from Mexican rock music or pop to traditional dances performed at special occasions like weddings. She has shown me that art and music are skills that are passed down every generation. Her open heart and soul are one of many reasons why I enjoy singing. Music always connects us,

no matter how far away we are from each other. For just those few minutes that we’re singing together again, it is just like when we were little kids, singing in our old house, sharing the same room.

Who was your favorite SMArts guest and what did you learn from their visit?

AVO: I don’t remember specifically who they were, but these three girls did a slam poetry performance that I loved. There was something about the topic they raised that was so in touch with how our society is and how it’s changing: the gentrification of NYC and similar cities filled with

angelo villar ortiz • artistic inspiration 028

people of color, and gentrifiers installing themselves in minority neighborhoods and communities. One of the girls made a beautiful comparison that referred to gentrification as an invasive plant species growing in native soil. That slam poetry reading is one of those performances I’ll never forget, even once I’m older, because it relates to our future.

Angelo Villar Ortiz is a 12th grader at Trenton Central High School. Angelo identities as a queer Mexican American. His hobbies consist of singing, reading, and photography. He is considering pursuing a career in education, and would specifically like to work with high school students.

ALLY “AVEN”

RIVAS

TRENTON YOUTH THEATER

Who or what inspires you to create art?

AR: My piece represents the ability to create. The fact that anything I make with my two hands can inspire others to create something else is the reason why I do what I do. I am also inspired by the SMArts guests who perform for us every Saturday morning, as they spark my creativity by showing us what they create. I truly find beauty in that act of sharing, and I wish to do the same thing. The process of beginning something new to putting the final touches on a piece amazes me, so I pick up a brush and let my mind go free, and hope what I do leaves behind inspiration.

Ally Rivas is a 12th grader at Trenton Central High School. Ally’s artistic journey began when they still lived in the Bronx, where they saw empty walls transform into colorful murals of graffiti. This inspired them to also create something new. Ally also really enjoys theater, and sometimes plays the ukulele. They look forward to pursuing a career as an artist and studying art in college. Ally sees beauty everywhere in the world, and hopes to inspire other people who also want to share their talents.

MIKEY SANTIAGO

TRENTON YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Who or what inspires you to create art?

MS: My first inspirational guide to creating art was an unpopular musician by the name of Benjamin Backus. When I was nine years old, he was the reason why I wanted to pursue music as a career and picked up multiple instruments, one of these being the cello. As I grew up, I started to see the importance and the value of the musical arts. The amazing people I get to see and work with just blow me away.

Who was your favorite SMArts guest and what did you learn from their visit?

My favorite guest performance is the cast and pit of the musical Something Rotten. Their presence and energy took over the stage, along with the great singing and music throughout the whole performance. Being able to witness the thrill and excitement of their performance and see them present the value of theater was a great inspiration for me. And right before their performance, I got word that they were in need of a drummer, so I took the opportunity to play with them! It was a little terrifying, but very rewarding. As I played behind them, I was in awe of the amazing cast members and pit musicians getting to

do what they love. I think it is beautiful that by creating art and displaying their prodigious gifts and dreams, artists can inspire and motivate the next generation of young dreamers to pursue the same thing.

Mikey Santiago is a 12th grader at Trenton Central High School, where he serves as a musical arranger and multi-instrumentalist in the Visual & Performing Arts department. Mikey loves to perform music for others. He hopes to one day move to Nashville, Tennessee and pursue a career in musical performance. Mikey dreams of touring and playing with the Grammy awardwinning brothers, for KING & COUNTRY.

SUNNY VASQUEZ

Who or what inspires you to create art?

SV: The reason I started creating art is because when I was little, I would see all the different colors in a sunset and try to draw the sky because of how pretty it was. These days, I like taking pictures of sunsets and the moon. Here, I drew a girl listening to music with a sunset behind her. Her hair represents the night and the moon.

GUADALUPE BUENO

TRENTON YOUTH ORCHESTRA AND THEATER ALUMNA

Who was your favorite SMArts guest and what did you learn from their visit?

GB: My favorite SMArts guest—Princeton’s oldest improv comedy group, QuipFire! Improv—had a lasting impact on me. I was very engaged in Trenton Youth Theater (TYT) during my last year, and that enthusiasm was only heightened when a few QuipFire! members visited and shared their improvisation games with us. Playing their games made me feel very happy and connected with the other members of TYT and allowed everyone to let loose. It taught me a lot about creativity, and how to match the energy of my peers. I found it very

freeing to let down my guard and go with the flow. I allowed this mindset to take over to draw this piece, deviating from my normal process by experimenting with textures, shapes, and techniques drawn from my friends’ art styles. It amounted to a refreshing experience and a bright, expressive piece I’m proud of.

ALLISON CIFUENTES

TRENTON YOUTH ORCHESTRA ALUMNA

Who or what inspires you to create art?

The human hand serves as my source of inspiration to create art. Through their movements and gestures, hands are able to portray a series of emotions. There is a story to each hand, conveyed through a strong grasp or a tender touch. As I perceive the playful nature of fingers, I am driven to capture these moments and their beauty within art. Hands are what inspire my art—both as the tools of creation, and as the medium through which I explore the profound experience of human connection.

Allison Cifuentes is a freshman at Mercer County Community College studying biology. She aspires to become a researcher, working in laboratories and focusing on biological sciences. Aside from biology, Allison loves to create digital drawings by combining her creativity with new technologies, and frequently goes on nature walks.

EVITA VASQUEZ

TRENTON YOUTH ORCHESTRA ALUMNA

Who or what inspires you to create art?

EVR: To create something meaningful from nothing— something that can be understood through the limits of language—is what motivates me to create. When I move my bow across my violin strings or when I slide a brush across a canvas, I am in a deep state of thought where I get in touch with emotions that would otherwise be hidden or truncated through the use of language. Knowing I can communicate and create something from things that would otherwise have no meaning makes me feel human. As humans, we have the gift of creativity and

imagination and believe it is something we ought to use more often. Throughout my artistic journey, I have realized that the world is my canvas, waiting for me to start a new project. Now, I carry a deep desire to create in everything I do.

Evita Vasquez Reyes is currently a freshman at Stockton University. She loves organizing random things, creative writing, crocheting, drawing, and reading. Although her future plans are not yet set in stone, Evita currently sees herself pursuing a career as a software engineer or doing something in cyber security.

ANDREW KANEB

2021-22 TRENTON ARTS FELLOW

AK: When I sat down to write this song, I wanted to capture a feeling that would be true not only to Trenton Arts at Princeton and the relationships that the program fosters, but also to me and my own interpersonal relationships. That was the only way I felt I could find an authentic way into the song. Ultimately, I realized that what is most meaningful about TAP, to me, is that for four hours every Saturday, it gives students a community where they can feel safe, comfortable, and unworried. The desire to help someone you care about feel safe and let go of their fears is a feeling that resonates strongly for me, both when I think about

my time with TAP and when I think about important relationships in my own life. And so that was the story I wanted to tell with the song— one person helping another feel safe. Throughout my life, music has helped me let go of my fears, and I hope that through this song, I can do the same for anyone who hears it—whether a member of the TAP community or a total stranger.

Lend Me All Your Sorrows

Andrew Kaneb

When a ladybug lands on your finger

Everybody knows that it’s good luck

I’ve noticed you don’t like to let them linger

As if you’re afraid they might get stuck

No matter what they always seem to find you

Even in the middle of the night

But sometimes you’re too busy looking out behind you

To see that everything will be all right

Ah it’s true

I’ll make sure for you

Just stay and Empty your hands

My heart is yours to borrow

Right here

I’ll hold the weight of your fears

Until tomorrow

Just lend me all your sorrows

In my head I am a ballet dancer

You’re the author of a famous play

We don’t need to have all of the answers

It doesn’t mean our dreams are bound to slip away

Fade to dust

So won’t you just

Stay and Empty your hands

My heart is yours to borrow

Right here

I can hold the weight of your fears

Until tomorrow

Just lend me all your sorrows

Maybe this is all a wash

And every world falls apart

Don’t be afraid

I’ll help you build it back from the start

Don’t you see the fragility Is the special part

Just stay and Empty your hands

My heart’s all yours to borrow

Right here

I’ll hold the weight of your fears

Until tomorrow

Yes my heart is yours to borrow

With you through whatever follows

So just lend me all your sorrows
