Parks, Trails and Picnic Spots

Benches and picnic tables are situated at various spots along the river.

Millennium Trail (Warkworth) — A 2.6-km trail along Mill Creek lined with more than 300 lilacs. You will often see ducks on the creek beside the trail or hear birds singing in the bushes. Entrance to the Trail is by way of the south end off Main Street or off County Rd 29 as you enter Warkworth from the east. There are benches as well as a covered picnic area.

Seymour Conservation Area (Campbellford) — There are 82 hectares of woodland with 6.5 kilometres of trails. There are two choices: an easy walk or a slightly more difficult trek that includes a hilly section. An interpretive sign offers an overview of the marshland, protected grasses, and protected species. Picnic tables are available.

Rotary Trail (Campbellford) — A 6-km trail in Campbellford, it connects Ferris Provincial Park, the Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge, and Lock 11/12. The crushed stone path is suitable for walking or jogging, and there's often a cooling breeze coming off the

The Great Trail (Hastings) — This is the world’s longest network of recreational multi-use trails, connecting 13 provinces and territories with 24,000 km of trails.

The Hastings connection is an allseason trail, known for its scenic views of the Trent-Severn, covering

23 kilometres, stretching from Hastings to Hoards Station. Nearby are picnic locations, parking areas, and several access points to The Great Trail. If you're lucky you might spot a beaver or white-tailed deer as you make your way.

Ferris Provincial Park (Campbellford) — A series of trails through woods and along the river range from easy to moderately difficult. The Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge connects the park to Campbellford's Rotary Trail.

There are several picnic areas to enjoy.

Mill Creek Park (Warkworth) — There are picnic tables, an accessible portable toilet, and a small playground area alongside Mill Creek. It's just a short walk into the village where there are places to eat.

Old Mill Park (Campbellford) — A beautiful waterside park featuring Canada’s Giant Toonie. You will find picnic tables, public washrooms and the Trent Hills Visitor Information Centre. Boat mooring is also available.

Pisces Park (Hastings) — Located on the south shore at the mouth of Rice Lake, the park has picnic tables, an accessible portable toilet, and food outlets that are nearby. It's a short walk into the village.

Hastings Gazebo — Located on the north shore of the Trent Canal in Hastings, the gazebo shares space with picnic tables, and an accessible portable toilet, and there are food outlets nearby.

There's also a small beach for swimming.

Kennedy Park (Campbellford) — There's a splash pad for little ones that's perfect for cooling off in the summer, and a skateboard park. Close by are a lawn bowling club and a newly refurbished tennis court that also accommodates the growing sport of pickle ball. You’ll find benches and grassy areas for picnics.

Tired of the path well-trod?

One of Northumberland County's Top 5 cycling trails is the scenic Trent River Truckin’ Cycling Route. The 63kilometre roadway route takes you off the beaten path, where even an avid cyclist will find the hills challenging.

The Great Trail is also popular for half-day rides where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch in Campbellford or Hastings along the Trent River. Warkworth is designated as a bike-friendly community, with cycling trails and convenient bike parking.

Bike repair kits can be found at the Trent Hills Visitor Information Centre in Campbellford.

One-of-a-kind Attractions A view of the gorge that’s span-tastic

Connected to Ferris Provincial Park, the Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge is a year-round attraction that is fun to walk across and offers stunning views of surrounding nature. The 91-metre structure hangs 9 metres above the Trent River and you can feel it sway gently while walking across from one side of the river to the other. There's Ferris Provincial Park on one end, which is open from the Victoria Day Weekend through to the Thanksgiving Weekend. At the other end is a walk-in entrance located off Trent Drive at Lock 11/12 in Campbellford.

A fish for your getaway that didn’t get away Pisces Pete is a stainlesssteel walleye sculpture that measures 4 metres long by 4 metres high.

Designed by Canadian artist Bill Lishman, he chose this species for its popularity among local

fisherman and reputation as the best game fish in Ontario. Pisces Pete gazes longingly at the Trent River from 3 Dit Clapper Drive in the Village of Hastings.

This fall Westben will be hosting live events.

Campbellford is home to Canada’s largest twodollar coin! The Giant Toonie stands 27 feet (8.2 metres) high and was designed by wildlife artist Brent Townsend. It's a popular spot for picture-taking, which often can get quite creative. There are picnic tables in the park along with public washrooms, and places to go shopping or get a bite to eat are close by.

Stroll through the gardens at TrueNorth Daylilies during the month of July and discover their extensive collection of hostas, lilium and numerous varieties of daylilies proudly cultivated by the owners. Book an appointment to view the award-winning private peony collection at Schoolhouse Gardens outside of Warkworth. Or go for a leisurely stroll on the Millennium Trail where more than 300 varieties of lilacs line the path. The best time to visit is the peak of the season, end of May-early June, but there are lateblooming varieties you can enjoy throughout the summer.

Promised Land Animal Sanctuary is offering a virtual tour where participants can meet the residents and hear their unique stories. Starting with sweet potbelly pigs – Kevin, Molly and Hugo – and accompanied by the rescue pups – Porter, Billie and Noah – then onto the goats, sheep, ducks, chickens, horses and the lovely feline barn cats, Madoc and Mama.

Some may be feeling more social than others and you will be treated to random up-close-andpersonal encounters with various snouts. Watching animals is always a fun time because you never know what shenanigans will transpire.

Happy trails for you Campbellford and Hastings are part of Canada’s first Waterway Trail Town Program, which runs along the TrentSevern Waterway National Historic Site.

The program encourages visitors to boat, paddle, cycle, hike or drive along the renowned inland passageway with its historic lock stations. Also, to spend some time along the way at the quaint communities whose character sets them apart.

Trent-Severn Waterway The Trent-Severn Waterway, a Canadian National Historic Site, connects Lake Ontario and Lake Huron through a 386-km canal system.

The first lock was built in 1833 as a commercial venture to allow for steamship travel. The Peterborough-to-Simcoe section opened in 1904,

followed by the link to Trenton in 1918, and then Georgian Bay in 1920. By this time the steamships were too big to travel the canal system, and with the introduction of motorized boats, the waterway became known for pleasure boating.

Paddling docks have been installed at Lock 13 (top and bottom), Lock 10 (bottom) and Lock 8 (top).

Tent camping is permitted at Locks 8 through 17 in the Trent Hills portion of the waterway.

Hastings Village Marina accommodates both seasonal and overnight docking with 64 boat slips available at Lock 18 at the mouth of Rice Lake on the south side. In 2021 new boat docks will be installed on the north side.

The marina is just a short walk away from restaurants and shops, a public boat launch, and a small sandy beach.

Campbellford Old Mill Park Docking offers overnight stays along both sides of the core wall.

There are places to shop or get a bite to eat close at hand. Book the TrentSevern Trail Town special – stay two nights and your third night is free.

Anglers, new and experienced, can fish from land, by water “in the Boom” (Percy Boom Road) or by boat at one of the many local cottage resorts. The Hastings Bridge is a popular fishing spot with all the amenities for your fishing experience conveniently located nearby.

Enjoy the bounty of Trent Hills with a trip to Campbellford Farmers’ Market, which operates every Wednesday and Saturday morning, May through October. Fresh-picked greens are available beginning in May, the strawberry season is in June.

UnFore!gettable places There are three golf courses only minutes from each other just outside of Warkworth. Each one offers something different for golfing enthusiasts.

Pine Ridge Golf and Country Club is a par-71 golf course that tests your putting skills but it's also popular with long hitters.

Stretching over 6,000 yards from the back tees, Pine Ridge is target golf at its best! With small, fast, undulating greens and a meandering creek you'll need to exercise care to navigate the course. Golfers will have to think their way around to post a good score. With recent tee deck additions and restorations, Pine Ridge challenges any golfer from beginner to expert.

Salt Creek Golf Links is a scenic 18-hole par-65 course with beautiful natural topography and a relaxed atmosphere. There's no pressure for speedy play and families are welcome. Each hole tests the player in a different way and offers a chance to make use of all clubs. Woods and water make playing the eight par-3's, the nine par-4’s and the one par-5 an enjoyable experience.

Warkworth Golf and Country Club is an 18-hole par-72 course that golfers of all skill levels will find attractive. The beautiful course is well manicured with mature trees, sand traps, water hazards and large sculptured greens. The course measures 6,300 yards from the blue tees, 5,657 from the whites and 4,925 from the reds. It's an enjoyable course to walk but power carts are available for those who prefer to ride.

Hastings

Campbellford, a Tour of Designated Heritage Properties – Featured properties include several in the former Seymour Township as well as in the town of Campbellford. Lt. Col. Robert Campbell and his brother, Major David Campbell, settled in an area along the Trent River that later became known as Campbell’s Ford. By 1876 the settlement had grown and become a separate municipality, the Village of Campbellford. The population had increased so much by 1906 that it was incorporated as the Town of Campbellford.

Warkworth

Make time to go back in time The local heritage committee has created four self-guided tours that can be taken at one's leisure. The sights are to be viewed from the sidewalk or roadway only.

Seymour, a Driving Tour – The spotlight is on stone houses in the former Township of Seymour where settlement began in the early 1830s. In the 1850s stone masons and others from Scotland took up residence there.

Limestone was the common building material and stone homes became the area's legacy.

WHILE ON STAYCATION BE A GOOD ‘LOCAL TOURIST’ There’s so much to do and see this summer right here in Trent Hills! Our local businesses have modified their operations in order to provide a safe environment for staff and customers. While enjoying a local excursion this summer, residents are asked to also do their part in preventing the spread of COVID-19. It starts by staying home when feeling sick. If showing symptoms of the coronavirus, self-isolate immediately and call 8-1-1 for advice and to arrange for testing.

Then adhering to recommended health guidelines to keep us all safe: Make A Plan Many businesses have re-opened in Trent Hills, with capacity limits in place and often with modified hours. Check on the status of a business before you visit by checking their website, social media or calling ahead. All staff and customers must wear masks and maintain a 2-metre distance from others.

Keep Groups Small Large family outings are a no-no right now, but small family groups can enjoy local outings together this summer. Remember to maintain proper distancing from others when picnicking, dining at restaurants, exploring trails, visiting attractions or shopping in stores.

Keep Your Distance – Wear A Mask Staying 2 metres (6 feet) apart is the easiest way to stay safe. When outdoors, masks are required if physical distancing isn’t possible. Masks are always required inside local businesses. If you are exempt from wearing a mask, be sure to check with the business on their policy for these circumstances.

Keep Hands Clean Wash your hands often with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds — especially after being in a public place. If water and soap are not available, use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

Clean Up After Yourself Trent Hills has many parks and trails for exploring nature. Please respect these outdoor areas and leave no trace behind. This includes leaving natural objects as you find them, disposing of waste properly and being considerate of other visitors. This will ensure those who come later will enjoy the space as much as you did.

Be Respectful The world’s a different place now and longer wait times are part of the new reality.

Safety protocols are now a fact of life for businesses. In turn, they ask that customers be patient and understanding. Any inconvenience you may experience by these new measures is in place to keep both staff and customers safe.
