PUBLISHER’S NOTES What is PVIFF??

FOCUS Willie Stewart CEO / PUBLISHER

T

he past five years, many of us have witnessed the economic downturn and people losing their businesses, their jobs; their homes; their hopes and their dreams. The economy has brought understanding and new meaning to the word “focus” for me. Focus has taught me the value of strategic planning and the need for restructuring of financial metrics (if you don’t have a plan, you won’t be able to balance and manage them) to stay on task for reaching goals. In surviving the economic downpour, we must be unconventional in our approach to business growth ventures. The metrics system that I use is called “Three A’s” = I; which means, Appearance + Approach + Attitude = Image and Image is Everything. Being focused may mean being unconventional. You have to be willing to consider all angles: 1) Creating multiple streams of income within your company 2) Creating less overhead 3) Being effective with your approach to customer service and 4) Believing in yourself and your product. 4

EQUATION: * Appearance: Getting to the NEXT LEVEL depends on who you keep in your reach. I call it the law of attraction. It’s important to build relationships with individuals that are already on the level that you’re trying to embrace. * Approach: You have to show passion about knowing your business products/ services and in knowing what you’re bringing to the table. 99.9 percent of what we do in building a strong relationship is done on approach so cultivate your relationships with your current customers and when dealing with potential investors and sponsors.

PVIFF is a unique marketing opportunity providing resources, information and avenues of communication for professionals, vendors, and festival owners committed to the African Diaspora& International Film community. PVIFF is committed to the idea that the African Diaspora as well the international film community and realize that the international film community is a powerful voice in our society and increasingly plays a vital role in connecting not only the local communities they serve, but the world globally. PVIFF represents more than 1,000 filmmakers worldwide, represents more than 1000 films from the International festival circuit, and offers extensive resources to assist corporations, markets etc. with reaching the consumers that frequent the industry. We also assist various companies, filmmakers, and producers, in such areas as marketing, distribution, technology and finance.

* Attitude: Embrace and learn new and emerging technology how they can grow your business and enhance visibility, be hands-on with our customers as well and engage more networking with your climb to the NEXT LEVEL. * Image: Your business is who you are. How is your appearance, approach and attitude, have you measured them lately, if not ask your customers how you look. They as well are doing the same. I’ll see you at the NEXT LEVEL ■

Patronize!

A

wise businessman told me a long time ago that businesses in our communities continue to thrive when they support one another. Now being a business owner myself, I fully understand the concept this man was speaking of. Because of that teaching, I continue to support, network and promote businesses and organizations I have had the privileged of coming in contact with. From construction to hair stylists, musicians to physicians, I attempt to spread the word in my community about positive people doing positive things. One thing that saddens me though is when I’ve consistently utilized the services of a business and they consistently refuse or fail to patronized in return. I have been known to discontinue utilizing the services of quite a few people over the years. Webster defines the word patronize as 1:to act as patron of : provide aid or support for; 2: to adopt an air of condescension toward : treat haughtily or coolly; 3: to be a frequent or regular customer or client of. The Trendsetters to Trendsetters motto is “Together Building Strong Relationships.” That entails supporting one another not only in business, but in life! I am proud to be an advocate of patronizing and strengthening the community in which I live. As consumers, neighbors and friends, we owe it to each other to help each other. In patronizing, we all win! Be blessed, Derek Payne Vice President/T2T Media Group, Inc. Creative Art Director

Reginald Hudlin “synonymous with success” By Lisa Earley

W

ho would have thought a little boy from East St. Louis would grow up to be what many people consider a trailblazer in the modern Black film movement? As a youngster, Reginald Hudlin would constantly pitch movie ideas to his older brother, Warrington Hudlin, a notable filmmaker in his own right. Reggie, as most people call him, had an affinity for film as a small child. One of the defining moments for him was receiving a book from Warrington one Christmas. Excited, Reggie opened that book, and noticed it had only blank pages. As he scratched his head, thinking, “what am I going to do with a book of blank pages?” Warrington told him, “it’s not enough for you to have ideas; anybody can have ideas. You have to write down those ideas, turn them into stories, and then take action.” The seed was planted. As he grew, the burning creativity grew within him. In high school, Reggie took part in creative activities. He was involved in theater, including a live sketch comedy troupe with friends, and he saw as many movies as he could possibly digest. Hudlin believes that whatever discipline one pursues, he must be a scholar of that discipline. It’s no surprise that Reggie would go on to pursue cinema in college. “When you think of Harvard, you don’t necessarily think of the arts,” 8

said Hudlin. However, in 1983, while majoring in Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University, he wrote and directed his first film: House Party. This twenty-minute short was the basis for what would become House Party (1990), the New Line release featuring the popular rap duo, Kid ‘N Play, and the late Robin Harris. House Party grossed nearly twenty-seven million dollars and won numerous awards, such as the prestigious Filmmakers Trophy, the Best Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival, the Clarence Muse Youth Award, and a New Visions, New Voices Award from the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. House Party was not only a critical success, but also one of the most profitable films of the decade and a catalyst for numerous profitable sequels. The upcoming Peachtree Village International Film Festival (PVIFF) will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Hudlin’s film, Boomerang (1992). Two decades have passed since Eddie Murphy wooed Halle Berry and stole all of our hearts with his famous line, “I can’t breathe without you.” Reggie is a big supporter of film festivals across the country, and he is excited to participate in the upcoming festivities honwww.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

writing the script for Django Unchained. Set in the Antebellum South, Django Unchained centers on a slave named “Django.” With the aid of an eccentric German dentist turned bounty hunter, Django himself becomes a trained killer, relentless in his pursuit to rescue his wife from an evil plantation owner. Hudlin shared that, “Unlike many movies about slavery which are not enlightening or liberating, Django Unchained explores all of the different painful elements of slavery.” The epic feature film will hit theaters this Christmas, and it stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

oring Boomerang. In the entertainment industry, the name Reginald Hudlin is “synonymous with success.” Reggie’s career has spanned over twenty years, and his list of achievements is long and very impressive. Some of Hudlin’s directing credits include: The Great White Hype, The Ladies Man, and Serving Sara. More recently, Reggie has directed episodes of hit television shows like Modern Family, The Office, and Psych. In addition to his work in film and television, Hudlin wrote comic books for the Marvel series Black Panther. Currently, Reggie writes a monthly comic strip for EBONY magazine, titled You Can’t Handle The Truth. Reggie served as the President of Entertainment for B.E.T. from 2005 to 2008. Reggie’s executive experience at B.E.T. led to the creation of his own production company, Hudlin Entertainment, where several projects are currently in various stages of production and development.

Mr. Hudlin is certainly a staple in the entertainment industry, and many are grateful for his countless contributions to the world of film. As an African-American female writer, who also has a passion for film, I’m particularly honored to have had the opportunity to speak with “the” Reginald Hudlin. He is an awesome example of what hard work and pure talent will do for you. His unique blend of experience has served him well, and it has blazed the trail for so many others in the entertainment industry. Thank you, Mr. Hudlin! You are truly a man of many talents, an icon in the film industry, and we certainly look forward to seeing more products of your creative and extremely talented mind. We wish you continued success! ■

Hudlin is currently producing Django Unchained, the upcoming film by Quentin Tarantino. A conversation Reggie and Quentin had fifteen years ago eventually led to Quentin TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | JULY/AUGUST 2012

Most recently he appeared as the host of the Who’s Got Jokes Comedy show on TV One, where he was anointed with the title, “Pope of Comedy.” When asked about how he felt being called the “Pope of Comedy,” he laughed and said, “For some reason, people think I’m a preacher.” He went on to say, “Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s nice to be associated with positive things. I’m an advocate for youth, and I do enjoy speaking in churches. I was brought up in church, and I come from a spiritual background, but I am not a preacher.” Tommy grew up knowing he was funny. As an insecure child, he would use his wit to become popular and make friends. When his grades started to slip, his mother would threaten him by saying, “unless you are making a living making people laugh, you better not come back in here with another note, or else.” Tommy learned quickly that there is a time and place for everything (including laughter). He now relays this wisdom to his son, “I try to teach my son that he can be smart and have swag. I am very proud of him. He is smart; excelling, and breaking the stereotype that says you have to be a geek because you’re smart. He’s popular and proving that being on the honor roll is really what cool kids do!” I had to interview Tommy in segments. It was like playing hide and seek; here today, gone tomorrow. But, after a few attempts we finally made it through. I asked him to describe his typical day and he said, “When I’m not busy being Dad, I’m producing, directing, editing, writing, acting and telling jokes.” At the time, he was balancing his Continued on Page 52

Angie Stone Not Your Average Rich Girl By Lisa Earley

“W

elcome back, Angie!” Your fans are excited about the upcoming release of your latest album, Rich Girl (scheduled for release on September 25). The title of Angie’s new album metaphorically means “being rich in joy, love and spirit,” said Stone. Her hit single, Do What U Gotta Do, which is steadily moving up the charts, is the appetizer to the main course, Rich Girl. I had the pleasure of speaking with Angie, and she was so cool that I felt like I was talking with one of my girls (I love it!). Speaking of girls, Angie is working with some of her vocally gifted girlfriends and her daughter Diamond on her latest album. Stone has been making albums every two to three years since 1999, so this next album is right on schedule: 1999-Black Diamond, 2001Mahogany Soul, 2004-Stone Love, 2007-The Art of Love & War, and in 2009-Unexpected. Although music is her first love, Angie has acted and performed in films, television shows and theatre. She currently has several irons in the fire. Stone is working on theme songs for some upcoming pilots with major networks, and making an appearance on the Michael Baisden Show as well as negotiating other collaborations. So, Ms. Stone is a very busy woman these days! Angie, who currently resides in Atlanta, has teamed up with some “Soul Sistas” in ATL: Erika Alexander, Kim Fields, Jasmine Guy, Tandria Potts and Terry Vaughn, to name a few. These sistas host “Conversations & Cocktails” at The 12

Green Room (located at 25 Bennett St., NW, north of downtown Atlanta, in Buckhead). “This forum was designed to bring women together so sisters could help each other out in a positive manner. Women often hurt each other, and a setting like this allows us to develop a support system. We laugh and cry together,” said Stone. In addition to her deep love for music, and people, Angie also has an affinity for shoes and purses. She has traveled the world, and has built up quite a collection throughout the years. Angie would love to open a shop in Atlanta where she can sell some of the items she has purchased. In fact, she also talked about how she wants to one day have her own line of boots and bags. (Honestly, I think designing her own line will be a piece of cake for Angie! Someone who is so inspired to write music from the heart the way she does, and has a strong sense of style, can surely find the inspiration to design something she loves so much—boots and bags.) Ms. Stone will be participating in this year’s Peachtree Village International Film Festival, as an entertainment forum panelist, and she will also have her own suite. You can stop by her suite to meet her in person, and hear some of her latest music. Angie isn’t just an average ‘Rich Girl.’ There is nothing average about this Sista who is beautiful, down-to-earth, and incredibly talented on so many levels. She said something that touched my heart as we closed our conversation. “I am sooo excited about the ‘outpouring of love’ I have received during this comeback.” (You know what? I felt her genuine gratitude.) Thank you, Angie… for your beautiful spirit, and for sharing your gifts with the world! We wish you continued success! ■ www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

oger Bobb is the President and CEO of Bobbcat Films. He formerly served as the supervising producer and Executive Vice President for Tyler Perry Studios. While there he directed, produced and contributed to 11 Tyler Perry films, including Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which grossed over 100 million dollars in theatrical and DVD sales to date. He was also responsible for hiring Kim

and Chip Fields, together producing 462 episodes of TBS shows “Meet the Browns,” and “House of Payne,” which were ranked among television’s top five primetime sitcoms. Roger won five NAACP Image Awards; four for producing House of Payne, and one for the film “For Colored Girls.” Acknowledging his leadership role as a trailblazer, he received the ‘Visionary Award’ by the Caribbean Heritage Organization of Hollywood in 2011. For the last seven years, Mr. Bobb was not only in a position to lend his expertise to Mr. Perry, but at the same time he was able to absorb the knowledge that Tyler had to offer. When I asked Roger about his relationship with Tyler Perry today, he simply stated, “It is great! It’s because of Tyler I’m where I am to-

You weren’t born in the states… you were born in London, right? “Yes, born in London and raised in Brooklyn; I now live in Atlanta,” said Bobb. Born in California but raised in Compton, she reminisced and joked about her sister and the things she would do around her. She says, “I use to sing about everything and it use to drive my sister crazy. She would say everything don’t have to be a song and everything don’t have to sound like gospel.” But still she kept singing every chance she got, in church, in school, and even at the dinner table. But, as life would have it, she ran into a lot of personal issues in her hometown that made it extremely difficult to record. “I had a lot of distractions, but I was determined. I wasn’t giving up!” It was a visit to Atlanta that TeyaLauray says turned out to be her fate. “I was driving to the airport and heard a voice say, ‘this is where you need to be’”. She says she couldn’t leave so she called her dad and told him, “Im moving to Atlanta.” Although her family was reluctant, they were supportive. “It’s my time now”, she said to herself, “and I’m going to use all the experiences, the heartaches, and pain to fuel my project and aim to help others.” With a renewed perspective she is now full circle, saying, “I want to empower people to change any negative situation that they may feel uncontrollably tied to. There are people out there that feel helpless. I know because I was one of them. I want people to know its okay and that it’s possible to change.” TeyaLauray’s recording project “Life Changes” is scheduled to be released later this year. As she plans for her future, she also feels compelled

TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | JULY/AUGUST 2012

hen you look up the definition of an allstar, most of them mention something about one involved in sports, but if you think about an all-star of a community, an all-star is someone much more. An all-star is someone who is versatile. They aren’t someone who just limits themselves. They take risks and do the unpopular amongst their peers in order to stand out. This month we have managed to find a young lady who is just that. Her name is Marc’El Jessie. She is an upcoming senior at Timken Senior High School in Canton, Ohio, and an upcoming epitome! When Marc’El was only in the sixth grade, she was chosen to be in The Ohio State University’s Young Scholars Program. She was a part of her middle school’s Academic Challenge squad as well as the dvd club, track and field, band, and student council. She was selected to be in Kent State’s Upward Bound and was also invited to her city’s Black Tie Affair. Throughout high school, Marc’El has taken an engineering course, been a part of the Speech and Debate team, the student council, as well as Timken’s Dance Squad. Not to mention she has always taken advanced placement and college courses, keeps a GPA of 3.75 and above, and still manages to be a big help at home. Currently, she is enrolled in and also the ambassador of Timken’s Allied Health Program and she is also a cheerleader. This past year, Marc’El was inducted into both the National Honors Society and the National Technical Honors Society. Outside of school, Marc’El does volunteering and is a model at Pro Model and Talent Management in Akron, Ohio. She plans on getting her bachelors in Public Health, Ph. D in epidemiology, and moving her career to a third world country. She says, “Why not help out somewhere less privileged?” Obviously this girl is out of the ordinary! As a 17 year old, she already knows what she wants, has a plan on how to get it, and is constantly checking off her list. With this young lady and the other imminent headliners, we have now changed the definition of an allstar! ■

National Association of Black Journalists: Making Advancements and Changing Perspectives

T

By Joseph Booker

he 37th Annual NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) Convention and Career Fair convened in the city of New Orleans, LA on June 20-24, 2012 with information, inspiration, and innovation. The reach of this organization is unparalleled in the areas of service to community and uplifting of the art of communication as a career. Students, seasoned journalists, and industry notables arrived in the Crescent City focused on the current issues in the state of America, the new media landscape, and greater community involvement. In that spirit of community service, the opening of the convention was marked by assisting homeowners in one of the communities still affected by the remnants of the Katrina tragedy. NABJ board members and volunteers finished work on refurbished homes as a part of the St. Bernard Project. Those homes were dedicated and placed in the hands of adopted families. Vice-President Joseph Biden gave an address to the convention during the opening ceremonies in a fashion befitting this election season and the current political debates. Opening ceremonies were topped off with a concert featuring

Grammy Award winner Melanie Fiona. As the convention progressed, deeper issues rose to the forefront. W.E.B. Dubois Plenary: Black, White, Red and Blue: Views from the African American Electorate in the Battleground States addressed issues facing African-American voters. As this season of debate kicks off, a panel of political journalist explored the views of Black Americans on healthcare, education, and the economy. Further discussion expounded on the presence of African Americans in the newsroom. Top media executives sought to reveal why African Americans were declined in this profession where the availability of candidates continue to rise. 18

NABJ Board Vice President of Broadcast Bob Butler-Reporter KCBS Radio announced initiatives which affect the youth of the community. One of the missions of the organization while in New Orleans was to kick off a book drive for youth. Recognizing the relationship between at-risk youth and literacy, NABJ sought to positively affect the dilemma through donating books to teens. Butler expressed to WYLDFM 98.5 announcer A.D. Berry, “The teenage sector of the community is overlooked when it comes to encouraging literacy”. The board vowed to start similar initiatives in cities across the country. The convention went to higher heights as the weekend rolled on. Morning workout sessions at 6:30am further emphasized the need to attain better health. The sports pioneers in journalism were awarded for excellence with a ceremony and after party on Friday. Saturday’s events included a golf tournament, film festival, authors showcase, and overall excellence awards. The weekend was further accented through the appearance of R&B artist Reuben Studdard for Disney’s Showcase, the announcement of NBC’s new lineup of minority actors with appearances by Tempest Bledsoe and Anthony Anderson, and a special screening of Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer”.

The ending of the NABJ Convention was in grand style and inspirational flavor with a gospel brunch in the Grand Ballroom. Earnest Pugh and Micah Stampley took the stage as did a plethora of gospel artists. This was an impressive performance with this years’ host Sally-Ann Roberts, WWL-TV, New Orleans. NABJ continues to support the community and nation with relevant focuses and encouraging themes. The 38th Annual Convention of NABJ will convene in Orlando, Florida in 2013. ith summer in full swing it’s imperative that pet owners take extra precautions to make sure their pets are safe and cool. Dogs cannot release extra heat from sweating through their skin like we do. Pets release excess heat from panting and a few sweat glands on the nose and pads of their feet.. Your pet’s temperature can rise to dangerous levels in a relatively short period of time. Keep clean fresh water within your pets reach at all times. If your pet is housed outdoors make sure that he has a cool, shaded, area to rest and escape the effects of harmful rays of full sunlight. It is wise to keep your pet indoors or bring your pet indoors during the hottest part of the day. Never leave your pet locked in a hot car with the windows up or cracked open for air. Many pet owners have suffered heartbreak when they found their pet deceased and locked in a hot car. They thought it would be okay to leave their pet in the car while they went into a building for a quick errand. In addition to the grief of losing a beloved pet, the pet owner may also face prosecution and jail time. It takes just minutes for your pet’s temperature to rise and cause heat stroke. Once your pets’ rectal temperature is over 104° you will need to take quick action. Rectal temperatures over 106° is an extreme emergency. At this temperature your dog will began to suffer irreversible damage to his organs and the body’s cells and systems. Learning to recognize the signs of heat stroke and prevent it from happening will save your dog’s life. ■

your pet is in distress, move him out of the sun and bring him inside immediately. 2. Begin cooling your dog by placing cool, wet rags or washcloths on the body - especially the foot pads and around the head. 3. DO NOT use ice or very cold water! Extreme cold can cause the blood vessels to constrict, preventing the body's core from cooling and actually causing the internal temperature to further rise. In addition, overcooling can cause hypothermia, introducing a host of new problems. When the body temperature reaches 103°, stop cooling. 4. Offer your dog cool water, but do not force water into your dog's mouth. Call or visit your vet right away - even if your dog seems better. Internal damage might not be obvious to the naked eye, so an exam is necessary (and further testing may be recommended).

HEALTH & WELLNESS

POOR ELIMINATION AFFECTS THE HAIR & SCALP By Dr Linda Amerson

N

ot an attractive subject, yet millions of Americans are victims of poor elimination and constipation. Constipation is defined as the difficulty in passing stools, incomplete of infrequent passage of hard stools. Related factors include intestinal obstruction, or diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is the inflammation and penetration of fecal matter through the thin-walled diverticula, causing an abscess formation in the tissues surrounding the colon. Also, tumors, inadequate water intake, not enough fiber, little or no exercise, emotional stress, changes in your daily routine that does not allow time for elimination. metabolic problems, poor dietary habits, medications, neuromusculoskeletal impairment, diagnostic procedures, pregnancy, and the list goes on. Abdominal distension, rectal pressure, headaches, abdominal pain and appetite impairment are common characteristics of constipation. You may have tried herbs, enemas, laxatives, suppositories, colonics or home remedies with limited success. You should see your medical doctor to determine if you may have a health condition which needs medical attention. Many hair care professionals are affected with poor elimination because of long work schedules, over-

booking appointments, stress, poor eating habits, and several other reasons. You may have wondered why your hair does not grow at the same rate it did years ago, and you may observe pimples or scalp sores occasionally on your scalp. These are both signs of an unhealthy scalp. Constipation does affect your hair and scalp. Constipation causes a diminishing of the amount of oxygen and nutrients reaching your scalp tissue. Because your skin and hair are extremities of your body, they are the first to suffer. Constipation also increases the tendency to scaly scalp disorders, and in extreme cases scalp infections. You should seek the expertise of a board certified trichologist for an accurate analysis and use Dr. Amerson's Therapeutic Essentials, LLC. There are six types of scaly scalp disorders, and many consumers may have two or more types at the same time. In addition, constipation contributes to pimples on your skin, as well as a greater vulnerability to skin infections. Nutritionists and Dieticians recommend to most consumers to eat foods high in fiber, and roughage. This includes breads that contain whole wheat and bran. Avoid refined foods. If you must have sugar, use natural brown, unrefined sugar, or check at your local health food store for a recommendation. Eat plenty of fruits, particularly prunes, and prune juice. Vegetables, whole-wheat and bran cereals are also good sources. Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily, even if you are not troubled by constipation, water is very helpful in flushing out some of the toxins in your body. Iron can sometimes contribute to constipation, but rarely if it is taken in natural foods. Unrefined, natural foods contain sufficient roughage to counteract iron-induced constipation. To conclude, although constipation affects many consumers, it has many related factors. Many hair care professionals may have never considered that their clients poor elimimation conditions may contribute to scalp infections. Therefore, the importance of Consulting with a board certified trichologist should become routine. FOOD / PALATE

Corey Radcliff (Manager) and Bert McCray (Owner) 826 Westmont in Atlanta, GA

I

f you have faith the size of a grain of a “Mustard Seed”… (Matthew 17:20)

The rest of that verse reads… “You can say to a mountain, move from here to here, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible to you” (Matthew 17:20, The Holy Bible, NIV). This verse is the foundation by which Bertram McCray built his business. Hence, the name… “Mustard Seed.” (He was praying, and that’s when he came up with the name.) In this busy society, we see so much lack, madness and poverty, that many people have become immune to the plight of our brothers and sisters right in our back yards. However, when you meet someone like Bertram McCray, you can’t help but be ‘moved’ by his story… what a powerful testimony… he is a true testament of what it means to have “mustard seed” faith! I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Mr. McCray, also known as “Bert” or “The Rib Guy,” and his business partner, Wanda Smith. To say these two were an absolute “joy”… would be putting it mildly! They actually moved me to tears. Currently, Bert and Wanda co-own “Mustard Seed”…Bert and his family run the restaurant located at 826 Westmont, in the West End of Atlanta, and Wanda and her family run the second location, at 668 Metropolitan Parkway, also in Atlanta. Their hope is to expand their business by opening a third location, which they are currently negotiating. From there, only God knows what heights He will take them. They feel very blessed, and are enjoying this moment and their success! Bert came to Atlanta five years ago, and this city has been 24

very good to (Above) LaMorris Sellers (Owner), him! Doors Wanda Smith (Owner) have opened 668 Metropolitan Parkway in that he would Atlanta, GA have never imagined. In fact, Bert said, “I have accomplished in just five short years here in Atlanta, what it took me 30 years to do in Miami.” Bert finished his degree while here in Atlanta, and is currently working on his Master’s degree. He likened himself to Abraham in the Bible, when God told him to leave his home. People told him he was crazy, and that it was foolish for him to move to Atlanta, where he knew no one. But Bert took a ‘leap of faith’ and set out for Atlanta, where he felt there was “gold in them hills.” The rest is history. Mr. McCray has worked hard all of his life. He’s done it all… law enforcement, retail, sewing, etc. Bert never thought in a ‘million years’ that he would one day own a restaurant. After all, he was just a guy who had lost his job, and needed to figure out a way to feed his daughter. Then he started his journey by selling ribs out of his truck on the side of the road in Miami. People often asked him, “What’s your back-up plan, Plan B?” For Bert, there is no Plan B, because back up plans are for those who are “preparing to fail,” and failure is not an option! “I’m passionate about what I do, and passion outwww.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

Gio

weighs enthusiasm every time. Enthusiasm wears out, passion doesn’t,” said McCray. As Bert travelled down memory lane, and thought about from where God has brought him, he choked up, and wiped away a few tears. Not tears of sadness, but tears of joy. He is a true testament to what faith in God can do for you. He said, “You can’t put God in a box. Trust Him; He will blow your mind, if you just put your faith and trust in Him.” While asking God to bring the right people across his path, in walks Wanda Smith, Bert’s advisor/consultant, managing business partner and “sister from another mister.” Wanda had been hearing about this “rib guy,” so she decided to check him out. She observed him for over a year. Wanda came in and saw this “melting pot of people” that were drawn to Bert’s restaurant… from all walks of life… police officers, school teachers, the mayor, the UPS guy. They all loved the food! All of this was great, but what really drew Wanda to Bert, was the interest her son Giovanni took in Bert and his business. Gio is a typical teenager in many ways… tuning out his parents, Wanda and LaMorris, when they offer him their parental advice. But Gio responded differently to Bert; in fact, Bert became Gio’s mentor. Gio started working with Bert, and not only learned the business, but took a sincere interest in Bert’s business. Bert admired Gio’s drive and impeccable work ethic. Wanda and LaMorris were amazed watching their ‘typical teenager’ son find his niche, and blossom into an “atypical” teenager who couldn’t wait to get to work to learn more about the business. In fact, “one day LaMorris left the restaurant in tears after watching Gio multi-tasking at work,” Wanda said. They were so intrigued, that they approached Bert about opening a second location. When Wanda first talked with Bert about the business, his

initial reaction was, “Okay, what do they want from me?” He had been burned so many times, by so many people, it was difficult for him to trust someone, and not wonder about the ulterior motives. When Wanda and LaMorris flew to Florida to attend Bert’s wedding (and LaMorris sang), he knew they were ‘genuinely good people’ and knew in his heart they were Godsent. Wanda, who started out in Atlanta with $2,500 and a Cadillac, is a local radio personality, who has become a pillar in the Atlanta community. It was important to her that she put her name on a legitimate business. When she and her husband discussed approaching Bert, Gio’s interest in the business and its impact on him, coupled with the community’s response to his products, were her primary motivators. A “win-win” situation is what Wanda and LaMorris were looking for as they were making preparation to do business with Bert. They saw his “heart”… he was dedicated, loyal and had an exemplary passion for his work. So, LaMorris spent four months training with Bert to learn the business (and Gio helped train his father—smile), and then they opened their “Mustard Seed” restaurant. Wanda said, she was always told that, “if you want to get somewhere, go to the people who are going somewhere.” Bert believes they are ‘going somewhere’ and that he has surrounded himself with “the best team!” He credits God for giving him the idea of “Mustard Seed,” for giving him the courage to move to Atlanta, and for bringing the ‘right’ people across his path. I asked, “So how do you feel right now?” With a radiant smile, Bert replied, “I’m living a DREAM!” Wow!! How incredible is that?! Being able to ‘live your dream’… a man who started with a barrel in a truck, with a tent, on the side of the road… now has two restaurants (and planning for more). Of course, we can’t forget the foundation for this dream… his “Mustard Seed” faith! If you want some DELICIOUS barbeque… I mean, lick your fingers and smack your lips delicious barbeque, check out either “Mustard Seed” location in Atlanta (826 Westmont and 668 Metropolitan Parkway in Atlanta, GA). “Always be ‘prepared’…you never know when your opportunity will come.” Sr. Director of Development, BET Networks,

Austyn Biggers By Lisa Earley

H

ere’s a general introduction all of us would like to make: “Opportunity, meet preparation, and preparation, meet opportunity.” The connection between opportunity and preparation can be a match made in heaven. However, what separates the people whose opportunity may open doors for them (or not) is their preparation. “Always be ‘prepared’…. because you never know when your opportunity will come. Sometimes we find opportunities in random places,” said Austyn Biggers of BET. This is simple, yet great advice that Biggers offers. How many times have we heard the saying, “people don’t plan to fail, people fail to plan.” Well, “people don’t prepare to fail, people fail to prepare.” It’s the same concept. We all know someone who is full of bright ideas, and is always saying, “Man, I had this idea that will make a great movie or a TV series.” That’s all well and good, but what are you doing to make that dream, that idea, a ‘reality?’ Do you know the right people? Or do you know the steps to take to put that bright idea into motion? The truth is… most people don’t. Because they don’t have the “right” answers to these questions, most of their “bright” ideas remain just that…. a bright idea, on a piece of paper, or living indefinitely somewhere in a creative mind. Mr. Biggers currently serves as Sr. Director of Development, with BET Network. Austyn, a 13-year veteran in his field, has expertise in pitching projects, and he offers some basic advice for people who are interested in developing their ideas: First, your idea has to be “ready.” Pitch it with clear representation. The question should be, “how can people work with you?” Always have your ‘calling card’ (two-minute pitch). Be prepared; have a script you can hand someone. Secondly, network and connect with people who are where you are, as well as those individuals who are where you want to be. Be a part of LinkedIn, IMdb and facebook; these are great, “free” networks. In this business, “who you know” is important. 26

TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | JULY/AUGUST 2012

The key is “reaching out.” Thirdly, never assume that companies want what you have. Make sure you have a clear understanding of what they are looking for in the future (do your homework/research). Lastly, remember that you can’t do it all. Attach yourself to the right people to build your team. People often lose money when they don’t attach themselves correctly. Don’t fill your team with people who think ‘exactly’ like you, that’s not a good sign. It takes both right and left brains to make projects work. When I asked Austyn about money for projects, he responded, “be careful of those who approach you. Find your money, don’t let it find you.” There are people out there who are looking to fund projects you just have to find them. Again, do your homework. Oftentimes you can find out about funding options through your various networks. Speaking of networks…. film festivals offer great opportunities for professionals in the film industry to network, share ideas and stay informed regarding industry trends. BET is starting to participate in film festivals, and Mr. Biggers will be participating in the 2012 Peachtree Village International Film Festival (PVIFF). “This gives them an opportunity to find new, fresh voices/writers that are ready to break in and be developed,” said Biggers. Although BET is expanding their reach, currently BET is mostly TV. Biggers shared, “at BET, we are continuously changing, improving… and constantly say these three words, “Respect, Reflect and Elevate.” BET is very excited about some A-list talent they are working with, and they will be making these announcements during the BET Awards on Sunday, July 1, hosted this year by Samuel L. Jackson. Austyn ended our conversation by saying, “at the end of the day, do your thing in your current space. If you write, write. If you act, act. You just gotta do it, and do it well.” I really appreciated Austyn Biggers “keepin’ it simple, and real!” So many times we are looking for magic to happen, and perhaps things would magically happen… if we were living in “The Land of OZ”… but, we’re not. So…. prepare, prepare, prepare. Make certain you are “Ms. Prepared” when “Mr. Opportunity” meets you. ■ www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

OMARI HARDWICK Passion, Dedicated, and Undeniable

O

mari Hardwick has made a name for himself in the entertainment industry with his passion, dedication, and undeniable, natural talent. Hardwick's film credits include Lionsgate's KICK-ASS alongside Nicolas Cage, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Buena Vista Pictures' THE GUARDIAN opposite Kevin Kostner and Ashton Kutcher, MGM's BEAUTY SHOP alongside Queen Latifah, and Sony Pictures Entertainment's GRIDIRON GANG opposite Dwayne Johnson and Xzibit. In addition, this summer, he can be seen in the highly anticipated, Twentieth Century Fox Film THE A-TEAM. Hardwick may be best known for his starring roles in television, including his current project, TNT's "Dark Blue" where he co-stars as Ty Curtis opposite Dylan McDermott, and his lead role as John Sack Hallon in the TNT 2006 series "Saved". Season 2 of Dark Blue will premiere in August 2010. Born Omari Latif Hardwick, he grew up in Decatur, Georgia. Hardwick's parents gave him a name to set a precedent, Omari meaning most high, and Latif meaning gentle. He shares, "I in no way believe that I am the highest or most high, but I feel like my name gives me something to strive for." Growing up, sports were Hardwick's world, but early on he knew he had a passion for the arts. By the age of 14, Hardwick was writing poetry on a regular basis, a passion he would carry with him into adulthood. In high school, he excelled at basketball, baseball, and football, and went on to play football at the University of Georgia. Although a star on the field, Hardwick never gave up his passion for acting, and minored in theatre in college. He shares, "I hugely attribute sports to my success in entertainment business. Being on the field taught me dedication and discipline I already came from a strict household when I was growing up, sports just took that to another level. Whenever I approach a set, I always feel as though the cast, crew, director, are all part of a team. I have always married athletics and art, two huge parts of my life." After graduation, Hardwick relocated to San Diego for a spot on the San Diego Chargers (NFL) however a knee injury cut his football career short. He decided to revisit his original passion for acting, and moved to New York to study his craft more extensively. In New York, Hardwick

studied off Broadway until 2000, when he made the move to Los Angeles. As a struggling actor, he worked odd jobs to pay for acting classes, however the security gigs and substitute teaching at times were not enough to make ends meet, and at one point he lived out of his car. Hardwick shares, what is so crazy, is that where I presently shoot my series ďż˝Dark Blue,' is where I lived in my car when I first moved to Los Angeles. It is surreal at times. Hardwick's first big break came in 2003, when he was cast in his first major role as a series regular in Spike Lee's Sucker Free City. Two years later, he landed the feature THE GUARDIAN and TNT's Saved- both of which he booked within a threeweek span in 2005. He notes, "I felt like I had arrived when I went back to one of my odd jobs that had let me go several years prior, and I looked out over Sunset Boulevard right next to the Chateau Marmont, and saw myself plastered on a billboard overlooking the city. I had to break down a little at that point, it was a big moment for me." Throughout 2007 - 2009 Hardwick worked on various projects, including guest starring on several television series, and filming several movies including Summit Entertainment's NEXT DAY AIR and Touchstone Picture's MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA. In 2008 he landed the role of Ty Curtis on the TNT series Dark Blue, season 1 aired throughout 2009. In addition to acting, Hardwick is a founding member of Plan B Inc. Theater Group, and a co-founder of Los Angeles Actor's Lounge. He has big plans for his production company, Bravelife, in 2010 as well, and plans on expanding the company. Hardwick also continues to work on his poetry, and has written over 4,000 poems, some of which can be seen on the Bluapple page. â–

PEACHTREE VILLAGE INTERNATIONAL FILM FEST

By Ava Simone Collier

he Peachtree Village International Film Festival (PVIFF) has been providing a platform for up and coming filmmakers and other artists in the film and entertainment industry for the past seven years. It is an annual weekend-long event here in Atlanta, which brings together not only filmmakers and artists, but the community at large who support and appreciate this industry. At the helm is the CEO and Founder of the PVIFF, Len Gibson. Earning a Bachelor of Arts in English Media from High Point University in North Carolina and his MBA from the University of Phoenix, Len says that he saw a need to create a venue where artists and filmmakers could come together and learn. “PVIFF is all about educating and inspiring filmmakers, young and old, as well as providing entertainment for those who may not be in the industry,’ says Gibson. “It’s also about creating an opportunity for businesses in the community that may not know how to partner with the film and television community to increase their bottom line.” He explained that the PVIFF is not all about showcasing the work of the independent filmmaker. It’s also about educating and inspiring the ones who may have a project on the “back burner” and are not able to move forward with it because of a lack of knowledge or opportunity. “At the PVIFF, we try to provide enough opportunities and education that will help them to go back and make the right decisions to create or complete their project.” Long before his vision for the PVIFF, Gibson has been involved with countless media outlets as an intern such as Fox 8 WGHP, The Greensboro News & City Re28

cord and the Museum of Black Inventions and innovations, just to name a few. In 2000, he launched GIPP. Museums, Inc. (Getting Into People’s Perspectives), a philosophy that drives both the African American Cinema Museum and the Hispanic Cinema Gallery. With the PVIFF in its seventh year now, there’s no wonder why Gibson’s passion for the film/TV industry has culminated into this successful annual event. In addition to being a producer, cinema historian, international film festival consultant, he is also a visionary. “I decided to create this festival because I travelled a lot to different

festivals and participated on various panels. Many times I found that filmmakers would go in and have a good time at these festivals, but leave without the education and knowledge that they needed. I saw a void,” Gibson shared. “I also saw where Atlanta was headed seven years ago in the film industry. At the time, Tyler Perry Studios had just opened and at the same time Rainforest Films was doing their thing.” Having the foresight to see what was needed, Gibson undertook this venture and gave birth to one of Atlanta’s biggest salutes to the cinema industry. “A lot was beginning to happen in Atlanta from a film and television perspective. I saw it coming and knew that independent filmmakers needed something that could help them take their careers to the next level.” Len and his dedicated team of professionals are once again gearing up for what will certainly be another successful festival. This year, the PVIFF will be held at the W Hotel in Midtown Atlanta from Thursday-Sunday, August 16th-19th and some of today’s biggest and brightest film and television artists will be in attendance. The festival will also include indie films from around the world, unique panels, workshops, musical and other special events, and much more. With the exception of a couple of private events, the festival is open to the public. “It’s more than a party,” Gibson says. “It’s all about networking. Although we have fun, at the same time, you come and you will meet the right people and leave with relationships that will help to take your career the next level.” Visit www.pviff.com for more information and details about the weekend event. The Queen’s “Right-hand Man” Acting Coach, Richard Lyons By Lisa Earley

R

emember the character Michael Janson from Living Single seasons one and two? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t. So, I’ll refresh your memory. He’s the attractive, somewhat quiet, guy who played Max’s “on again, off again, ‘whenever she felt like being bothered’ boyfriend.” I remember feeling sorry for him because Max really “made it hard for a brotha!” Well, the gentleman who played that role is Richard Lyons, and many refer to him as an “Acting Coach Extraordinaire.” Needless to say, the man who went from playing Max’s part-time boyfriend in the 1990’s has quite a resume in 2012. Born and raised in southwest Philadelphia, Richard has made California his home since the days of Living Single. Speaking of Living Single, that is where Richard met and 32

became fast friends with the “Queen” herself, Queen Latifah (Dana Owens). She played the role of Khadijah James, the sassy, ‘gentle as a lamb, yet fierce as a lion when she needed to be’ editor and publisher of an urban magazine, Flavor. Richard Lyons is Queen Latifah’s “Right-hand Man” these days. Queen Latifah reached out to Richard for his assistance when she auditioned for Set It Off, which was released in 1996. He has worked with her since then, and she is currently his primary client. Mr. Lyons is very fond of Queen Latifah, and he speaks very highly of her. He spoke of Latifah’s positive attitude, Continued on Page 53 www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

“Good Movies, for a Broad Audience, with an Underlying Message of Faith” COO, T.D. J. Enterprises, Curtis Wallace)

B

ishop T.D. Jakes has the right man serving as Chief Operating Officer of T.D. J. Enterprises, LLP. Mr. Curtis Wallace brings a wealth of experience to the table. He has an in-depth knowledge of the faith-based world, mixed with business and legal experience. His resume includes crisis management, entertainment, financing, organizational structure, publishing, real estate matters and ventures between for-profit and non-profit entities. I would say that Mr. Wallace is a very well-rounded executive, and Bishop Jakes is blessed to have a high-level team member who brings such a diverse background to the table. T.D.J Enterprises, Inc. was formed in 1995, and became T.D.J. Enterprises, LLP in 2005. The company motto is “Educate. Empower. Entertain.” Their projects range from film and television production to live theater, as well as music and publishing. When asked what message you want to convey about your company, Wallace replied, “we make good movies, for a broad audience, with an underlying message of faith.” The consistent message is: “Flawed people trying to do better.” As a consumer and film lover, I would have to agree with you, Mr. Wallace. From Taraji P. Henson’s character in Not Easily Broken, who played a wife who allowed her controlling, “overthe-top” mother to nearly destroy her marriage; to Sharon Leal’s character in Woman Thou Are Loosed: On the Seventh Day, who changed her identity to leave behind a ‘dark and ugly’ past that comes back to haunt her, these are flawed people trying to make a change for the better. Although these stories are fictitious, we

may not have to look very far to see a striking resemblance to people we know. These movies go even deeper than the whole notion of flawed people and their ‘quest’ to do better. They are about “forgiveness and redemption,” said Wallace. This was evident in Jumping the Broom, when the character played by Paula Patton found out that her sassy ‘aunt’ was really her mother, and her sophisticated ‘mother’ was really her aunt. The story ended well, and of course, the message of “forgiveness and redemption” was the imprint sealed in my mind as I left the theater. T.D.J. Enterprises’ current project, Sparkle, scheduled for release on August 17th, is consistent with the same theme. This film is being produced in conjunction with SONY Pictures, and it stars the late Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks. Another exciting project on the horizon for T.D.J Enterprises is a film called, Heaven is for Real. It’s a collaboration with Hollywood film producer Joe Roth, and it is based on a true story by best-selling author, Todd Burpo. The four-year old son of Burpo, a pastor from Nebraska, recounts his “heavenly” experience, which no one believed at first, until he began to tell them things he wouldn’t have otherwise known. Shooting will begin in the fall, and the movie will be released next year. T.D.J. Enterprises is also collaborating on two South African films, A Million Colours, and Winnie. A Million Colours is a story of love and friendship, set against the violence of Apartheid in South Africa. Winnie is the love story of South African leader, Nelson Mandela, and his wife, Winnie. Oscar award winning actress Jennifer Hudson plays the role of Winnie, and Terrance Howard plays the role of Mandela. In addition to the common theme of “forgiveness

and redemption,” these movies are also about healing and love. Mr. Wallace will be on hand to lend some of his expertise as a panelist during the upcoming Peachtree Village International Film Festival (PVIFF), being held in Atlanta, GA, August 16-19th. The panelists will discuss the process of filmmaking from pre-production to screen lit, and he will add the producers’ perspective to the discussion. Curtis feels that film festivals provide great exposure for films and filmmakers. The environment is typically small and conducive for relationship building. As we ended our pleasant conversation, Mr. Wallace said something that I find to be very true across the board, “Collaborations and relationships are vital to success in business, and particularly important in the film industry.” ■

LIVING LEGEND ◄ Joe Frazier and Marion Conner

Marion Conner, An Appreciation by Bobby Franklin

I

first met Marion Conner in 1965. I was a ten year old boy and my father had taken me to some sort of sporting show. At the time I was a very shy kid, but for some reason loved to watch boxing on TV. When my father asked me if I would like to meet a real boxer in person, though a bit nervous, I jumped at the chance. He brought me over to this very handsome fellow with the friendliest smile. It was such a thrill for me to meet Marion Conner, and he made me feel like his friend. We squared off for a photo, and I never forgot that moment and the really nice person who made me feel so important. About two years later I would attend my first professional boxing card. It was on December 18, 1967. My father brought me to the Boston Garden where we were seated a couple of rows behind former Governor Foster Furcolo. As I sat there I got to see my old friend Marion Conner step into the ring with the number one heavyweight contender Joe Frazier. I now had a personal connection right into that ring, and I was so proud of how my friend handled himself. Outweighed by thirty pounds and in with one of the all time greats, Marion did not give an inch. He was not an opponent. He was in there to win and go on to become world champion. Unfortunately, he had run into one of boxing’s greatest fighting machines. Not only had Marion been decked, but the referee went down as well. When you look at a picture taken right after the fight you can see the disappointment etched in Marion’s face. He had come to win and felt he had let everyone down. Well, he hadn’t let me down. He showed this now 12 year old what courage and determination was all about. To me he was a winner and a champion, and I was proud of him. Forty‐five years later I would meet Marion Conner once again when he came to Boston to receive the Ring 4 Warrior Award. We got to have another picture taken, and you can still see that wonderful smile on his face. We got to talk about his boxing career and how it still pains him that he never became a world champion. How thrilled he was to have met such greats as Joe Louis, Ezzard Charles, and Jersey Joe Walcott. His time living in Roxbury and training at the New Garden Gym, a gym I would later work out at as I tried my hand at a boxing career. His friendship with Larry Carney and how much he respected Larry. When I asked him about his fighting style he told me he was an aggressive body puncher with a very strong good left hook to the head, who wore his opponents down. As an amateur he had competed as a southpaw and was then turned around when he became a pro. In his first fight with Tom McNeeley, Marion credits a part of that win to the fact that he switched to lefty midway through the bout. Boxing scribe Mike Marley remembers the bout that way as well. One thing that surprised me is when Marion relayed to me the fact his handlers told him to trade left 34

hooks with Joe Frazier. I don’t think that was very wise advice. I believe Marion’s best chance would have been to use his speed and a sneak right hand. Up until his fight with Greatest Crawford, Marion had a very respectful record of 30 fights, 23 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw. On November 16, 1966, he met rugged Greatest Crawford of Brooklyn, NY at the Canton Memorial Auditorium. Crawford who was 26 years old was knocked out in the ninth round and was taken to a hospital after efforts to revive him failed. He underwent surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain but succumbed to the injury on November 17, 1966. The tragedy of that night took the fire out of Marion. Emma Conner tells me he was never the same after that fight. He would now let up when he had a opponent hurt. In his rematch with Herschel Jacobs, Marion had Jacobs cut but then backed off out of fear of hurting him. His post Crawford record of 7‐17‐1 shows just what an effect the sad outcome of that fight had on him. During his career Marion Conner fought many of the top names in an era when boxing was still a sport with many great fighters. Look at his record and along with Joe Frazier you will see many familiar names. Henry Hank, Herschel Jacobs, Tom McNeeley, Jimmy Dupree, Levan Roundtree, Mark Tessman, Billy Tisdale, Billy Douglas, and Ronnie Harris to name just a few. It is also something to note that Joe Frazier had 37 bouts against 30 different opponents. Only two of them were light heavyweights, one being Bob Foster and the other Marion Conner. Quite an exclusive club to be in. Today Marion is living in East Canton, Ohio with his lovely wife Emma. I had been trying to locate Marion for a number of years, and not long ago my good friend Tom Marino gave me a call and said he had found him. I was then put in touch with his wonderful Daughter Vivian who lives in South Carolina. I told her Mickey Finn and the folks at Ring 4wanted to send Marion an award to show him how much he was loved and remembered in Boston. Well, when Emma and Marion heard about it they said they wanted to come out for the banquet. Along with Marion’s sister Evelyn and nephew Lamont, the Conner clan made the long drive from Ohio. It was a thrill to have them all here and we were all so pleased to be able to spend time with them. Emma is the best and Marion is lucky to have such a woman standing with him. It has been a long time since that ten year old boy first met the boxer with the warm mile, but he is still the man I remember so well from that day. Marion should have no regrets about not winning a world title because he is a World Champion in the truest sense of the word. You can see that by his smile and by the smiles he gets in response to it. He never gave up and has come out a winner. ■

Being Faithful In The Little Things By Angela M. Thomas

T

hank God for the small beginnings (Zechariah 4:10). Be trustworthy and faithful with the little and you will be the same way with much (Matthew 25:23). Hope looks forward and not backwards. We should dare to step out in faith and act like it’s going to happen. True faith puts action behind it. I believe it’s time we all lay our faith on the line and start believing in ourselves. Too often, we say that we believe God for good things to happen for us, yet with our actions, we’re doing just the opposite. Sometimes, we put more faith in what others tell us than we do in what God says. Start declaring by faith the things you hoped for and trust that His will be done. Keep the vision in front of you. Never give up on your dreams. You can rise up out of any situation just don’t allow negatives to take root. Keep believing for good things and have faith in the little things. Quit putting your faith in the wrong places, and start agreeing with what God says about you. God will give you the desires of your heart, so just continue to be bold enough to put your faith out there. Set high goals for your life and don’t allow defeat to set in and destroy your dreams. We can keep out faith working for us, rather than against us. “Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?’ These words ring down through the centuries. Jesus Christ taught that the Father within man could be absolutely trusted to guide, protect and provide when man believes it possible. It’s time that we form the habit of being faithful in the little things, so we can receive marvelous returns. We cannot accomplish anything we cannot see ourselves accomplishing. Our success and happiness depend upon our faith, poise and balance. No matter how many times we fail at something, try it again. Soon we will reap the things that we have worked towards and sown. “Be careful (or anxious) for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplications, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God.” When we are free from self-doubt, fear, worry, and believe, trust, asks with thanksgiving, strong faith, and then our good will be given to us. Remember by your words you are justified and by your words you are condemned. Change your words and you will change your world, for your word is your world. “Ask, believing, thou shalt receive!” Remember, faith creates expectancy. We must get out of the rut of negative thinking and have faith in all things. Doubt, fear and apprehension keep the doors and gates locked against your good. “When you pray, believe you have that which you prayed”. Your faith in God’s word and knowing God’s word, that unshakable confidence and trust in the reliability of what God says, will quench all doubt and fear. What bright lights we can be when we say the simple words, “I have faith in all things!” ■

How Kids Can Help KidsAnd Have A Great Time (NAPSI)—When life gives you lemons, they say, you should make lemonade. Now, a growing number of families have found that when life gives you lemonade, you can make it into a source of delight for children around the world. The Way it Works As part of a program aptly named “Make a Stand,” a youngster sets up a lemonade stand. Proceeds from the stands are sent to the Toy Industry Foundation and used to distribute toys and make play possible for children in crisis or other stressful situations. The Benefits The program empowers young entrepreneurs to make a difference and learn about the importance of charity and giving back to the community and those who are less fortunate. And it provides a fun and engaging way for children, communities and companies to help give the gift of toys and play to children in need. The Possibilities In addition to lemonade, some stands also sell iced tea, brownies, cookies, apple cider and hot chocolate, depending on the weather. Some young people also leave out a donation jar or ask customers to make a cash donation to the Foundation in addition to anything they purchase. The Chance to Share The fun doesn’t have to end once a kid closes the stand. Young people can submit their “Make a Stand for Kids” stories to the Foundation to inspire others to make a difference. Stories can be about unique customers, creative recipes and interesting ways to draw traffic to the stand. All stories can be sent to makeastandforkids@toyindustryfoundation.org. Supported by toy companies that donate new toys and by companies and individuals who provide monetary donations, the Foundation then donates to children’s charities. Toys are distributed to national partners serving military families and foster children, as well as to groups dealing with underserved, at-risk and homeless children throughout the U.S. and around the world. Don’t Cancel the Order By Georgeann McCrary

I

was discussing a matter with someone recently and like many of us the person expressed all the things that he believed that God would bless him with. As the conversation progressed, I noticed that with every positive thing that was said, it was followed by a statement to the contrary. I thought to myself, “How can you continue to fervently ask God for things such as a mate, financial breakthroughs, and peace of mind during your time of prayer and meditation and then say in your next breath, “I guess I am just meant to be alone or I am b-r-o-k-e?” The Bible states in James 3:10 that blessings and cursing should not both proceed from your mouth. And, according to Proverbs 18:21, “death and life are in the power of the tongue.” I began to explain these biblical applications for living, but with little success. There were no light bulbs coming on and the person did not seem to have the “aha” moment that I was hoping for. The Holy Spirit then provided me with a simple example: You go to a restaurant and order a burger with lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, onions, and mayo. The cashier that takes your order tells you that it will be a 15 minute wait on that order. You’re in a hurry so you respond and say, “Never mind, I don’t want that. Cancel that order.” That is essentially what we are doing when we pray and ask God for things that are in line with His will. He begins to orchestrate how those things are going to manifest in our lives, time passes and then we cancel the order by speaking negative things against what we say we believe God for. The angels probably shake their

heads and sadly reply, “Never mind. Another order has been cancelled.” The cycle continues. We pray asking and believing, yet again we cancel the order or prolong the manifestation by letting negative confessions sputter out of our mouths while filling our minds with skepticism, doubt, and disbelief. What we requested may seem

enormous and difficult to us but is there anything too hard for God? No. There is nothing that is too difficult for God. He can handle it all. Make a conscious effort to trust him and exercise the measure of faith that was issued to each of us. We must watch the words that are coming out of our mouths, the thoughts that are perusing through our minds, and the beliefs that are held dear in our hearts so that our prayer requests are fulfilled and the blessings of God may freely abound in our lives. ■

THE EVERYDAY WOMAN: VOL 6

Promiscuity By Chinaz Love

T

he terrorist attack of promiscuity is difficult to discuss for me. Partly because I enjoy the act of sex. By no means do I consider myself promiscuous. However, I am sure that my standard is different from God’s. Being married from eighteen years old until thirty-six, I didn’t understand why it was difficult for a woman to keep her body. The difficulty in understanding was simple, I didn’t have to keep my body. When I divorced and my body began to cry out to be pleased in that act I was so use to taking part in, I began to understand the difficulty of crucifying the flesh. I understood that it was an everyday battle of the single woman. It not only takes discipline, but also an understanding of who you are in the Kingdom of God. I would be a liar if I said, that I keep my skin soft, decorate my feet with polish, and enhance my pheromones with scents for my own pleasures and the love of myself. I take care of myself because, I feel I

am worthy. Yet, there is always the other piece of a woman that appreciates being desired and desirable. When I asked God what to say, I heard, ‘Be ye separated.” The act of sex joins your spirits and your souls together. It is the consummation of marriage, where two people become one body. We as women of God are suppose to be connected with God. Acts, 17:28 For in Him we live, and move, and have our being;. . . KJV. God requested that we abide in Him and His word abide in us. (John 15:4). So if we are connected to and reside in the living God, how could we lay down and be spiritually connected with others? My sister explained it so simply when she relayed the following. Imagine a plate of food that you prepared for yourself at Thanksgiving. You selected the best china from the cupboard. Dressed it with your favorite entrees from the array a food prepared for this special occasion. You arrange the food on your plate in a manner that would blend together to satisfy your taste buds and be pleasing to your eyes. You blessed your food, but before you can eat any of it, the company invited for dinner must eat from your plate first. Your guest enjoy your meal tremendously, eating till their belly is full. Then you are allowed to partake of the leftovers, using the same plate and eating from the same utensils. The feast envisioned suddenly does not become so appetizing. This is the same manner we are presenting ourselves to God!

How do we stand and say I am ready to be effective in the Kingdom when we have connected, tied, and knitted our souls together with the enemy who plans to assassinate our purpose. growing up in Brooklyn around the time Spike Lee was starting out, so I would say he was very influential to me. When I saw Spike’s She’s Gotta Have It, I was fascinated. Even moreso, when I realized that the person who produced the movie not only looked like me, but also lived just blocks away. I then watched him as he took the time to write books and conduct industry seminars, and it just blew me away,” said Roger. So your interests lead you to The Directors Guild of American’s Asst. Directors Program? “Yes.” How does one get accepted into this program? “It’s an extremely tedious process with several exams and evaluations, and five thousand people trying to get into a remarkably small window,” Mr. Bobb continued. But you were accepted? He laughed and answered, “Yes.” Did you always know that you wanted to be a film producer? “My brother Gordon and I would go around reciting lines from movies, never knowing how it would transpire to our adulthood but here we are; he is one of the most successful lawyers in the entertainment business, and I am where I am,” said Bobb. Do you have any plans of acting or appearing on the big screen? “No,” he laughed. “I acted in my first Indie film, and I knew then that in front of the camera was not for me.” So, you were producing prior to working with Tyler Perry? “Yes, prior to working at Tyler’s studio, I worked on films such as Copland, Primary Colors, Celebrity, and I also Stomp the Yard. worked on TV shows like New York Undercover, and

NYPD Blue, Love Don’t Cost a Thing and My Wife and Kids. I wrote and produced a few independent films as well,” said Bobb. So there you were, in New York City, and a friend tells you about a friend in Atlanta that could use your help. “Yes, Reuben Cannon was attending the American Black Film Festival, and he told me about a film maker that was just starting out, Tyler Perry… and the rest is history.” Roger Bobb’s story, as notable as it is, is still being written. What can we expect to see coming out of Atlanta’s new Bobbcat Film Company? Roger responded, “We have a series coming out called, The Battle. It’s about marching bands and explores the whole process of the work that goes into creating these magnificent marching bands. We also have a cooking show with David and Tamela Mann, aka Mr. Brown and Cora from the sitcom Meet the Browns, coming out this year called, Hanging with the Mann’s. With David involved, you can be sure it’s not just your average cooking show.” We laughed. “Bobbcat will also be releasing a film called Raising Izzy, by David Martyn Conley. In Sept 2011, the film earned the best screen play award at the American Black Film Festival.” Roger, what advice can you leave with our readers to help them on their road to success? “I would have to say faith, work ethic, and being able to recognize the value of helping others,” said Bobb. In addition, Roger leaves this thought, “Have a passion for what you do, and have a plan. Remember, a business always has a plan.” ■

Meet Naturi Naughton By Ava Simone Collier

MGM’s remake of Fame, which Irene Cara originated. I spoke with this talented East Orange, New Jersey girl and here is some of what she shared with me: Ava: Naturi, you sing, dance and act. We call that a triple threat. Who has inspired you in your career so far? Naturi: I have loved doing all three since I was a kid. I always dreamed of being a triple threat and to emulate my career after people I admired like Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Angela Bassett and Jada Pinkett. I’d always been a big fan of Irene Cara from the time she starred in Sparkle. I loved her even before I knew she was in Fame. Ava: Your current project is The Client List on Lifetime. Tell us what that show is about and who your character is. Naturi: I’m a regular on the show. It stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Loretta Divine and Sybil Shepherd. I love doing the Client List because it’s sexy, provocative and fun. I play a young girl named Kendra who is from Beaumont, Texas. Basically we work in a spa where we give happy endings. The whole thing is that we’re sort of undercover. The townspeople don’t really know what’s going on at “The Rub of Sugarland” spa. My character has a fiancée who doesn’t know what she does and she’s trying to hide it from him. Ava: Naturi, Prior to Fame, you’ve also been on Broadway and starred in Hairspray. What was that like and which do you prefer, live stage or film?

S

inger, actress and dancer: A triple threat! That’s Naturi Naughton, former member of the Soul Train Lady of Soul award winning girl group 3LW (3 Little Women). Naturi is currently starring in Lifetime’s new series, The Client List, which premiered on April 8, 2012. Naturi also played “Bunny Brenda” in the now cancelled NBC’s series The Playboy Club. You probably also recognize her from her realistic breakout role as “Lil Kim” in the motion picture Notorious, which chronicled the life and death of rapper Biggie Smalls. Later, Naturi landed the lead role in 42

TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | JULU/AUGUST JULY/AUGUST 2012

Naturi: It was an awesome experience and my first time doing live theatre. I played Lil Inez and worked with Tevin Campbell. I loved doing that show for three years and learned a lot. It taught me how to think on my feet on stage and be able to improvise. I don’t know if I have a preference. I love being on stage because you get a chance to feel the reaction of the audience right away. But the camera allows you to tell so many stories and perfect it because of different takes and different angles. I have a passion for both and It’s hard to choose. What I will say, though, is that there’s nothing like performing on a stage before a live audience. It’s about touching people right in that moment and there’s nothing like that exchange between the audience and actors. Ava: You played Lil Kim in the movie Notorious, the life story about Biggie Smalls. You did a great job. How much fun was that and how’d you prepare for your role as Lil Kim? www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

PEACHTREE VILLAGE INTERNATIONAL FILM FEST

Naturi: I had so much fun being a part of that film and telling Biggie’s story. People were really moved by that film. Lil Kim is a hip hop icon. I’m so glad I got the role, but it wasn’t easy. I did not know how to rap and had to do a lot of preparation. Lil Kim created that deep, hardcore, raunchy, fearless style of rapping. When she got on the mic, you knew it was her. I studied hard for my audition. I had to do a rhyme from All About The Benjamins. I watched myself in the mirror, my tone and the sexuality of the words. I had to attack it without any fear. I went to my audition with a wig and an outfit that was very “Lil Kimish”. There was a difference between Brooklyn girl Kim, who was vulnerable and loving, and Lil Kim, who was hardcore. Ava: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve come up against in Hollywood as a young black actress? Naturi: My biggest challenge is that there aren’t enough opportunities for black actresses. There’s always an uphill battle to prove to the studio or network that there’s a lead role that doesn’t have to be one race, like for a Caucasian. The challenge is making sure that your voice is heard and to stay consistently working. I’ve been blessed and fortunate to go from the NBC series The Playboy Club straight into The Client List. I’m a working actress and that’s something I’m grateful for. Everyone isn’t afforded that opportunity. Things can get slow because there aren’t enough roles because there may be only one black girl role available. It’s challenging, being a woman, black or white, and it’s not easy. Sometimes it feels like a man’s world. I wish there were more female writers and directors. But, hopefully down the road I can be a part of that change to make sure our voices are heard. Ava: As a working actress, what would you share with someone who wants to break into this business? Naturi: Go into this business very secure in who you are. Make sure you know what you want to be. This business can reshape and remold you into something you never wanted to be. It’s not an easy road, thicken up your skin and pray. Be around good people, be strong and have a good foundation. You will hear “no,” but you have to say ‘I’m not giving up on myself - and don’t! ■

The Modern Day Madam C.J. Walker… Karen Stallings By Lisa Earley In 1910, when you thought of beauty products for women of color, you thought of Madam C.J. Walker. One hundred years later, in 2012, when we think of cosmetics for women of color, we think of Colour U Cosmetics. Karen Stallings is the owner, and she’s been in the beauty industry for over 28 years. Stallings has served as an educator with major companies such as Clairol, Hair Cuttery and Paul Mitchell. In fact, through the years, she has worn several hats: cosmetology educator, hairstylist, makeup artist, make-up artist educator and now last but not least, entrepreneur. Ms. Stallings has built quite an extensive repertoire over her nearly three decades of being in the beauty industry. Karen has worked with Black Hair Magazine, Black Sophisticate’s Hair Styles and Care Guide, JET Magazine (Beauty of the Week), Xtreme Magazine. Colour U Cosmetics will be the official cosmetics line for the Peachtree Village International Film Festival, taking place in Atlanta, August 16-19. During the film festival, there will be a contest to find the “face” of Colour U Cosmetics. (Visit www.colourucosmetics.com for details, or to enter

COLOUR U the contest.) Colour U Cosmetics is a full, high-end, cosmetic line, and the products are made with the finest ingredients in the cosmetics world. They are hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic (meaning, they won’t clog your pores). The products will give you an even-toned, flawless, air-brushed look. What inspired Ms. Stallings to start her own cosmetics line? (Quite frankly, Karen was tired of seeing women of color walking around looking ashy and gray.) Colour U Cosmetics is for all skin tones, but the focus is women of color. She saw a need, and wanted to do something to help women, particularly women of color when it came to color matching. That is how her company was birthed. Colour U Cosmetics has a comprehensive list of products that are ‘true to color.’ “What you see in the package, is what you see on you,” said Stallings. The line offers blush, bronzers, dual powders; bold shadows (cream, loose and pressed shadows and shadow base); bright glitter; brow powder, lash primer & conditioner, and volumizing mascara; lip & eye pencils, long lasting lip gloss, rich lip sticks; professional 44

make-up brushes & brush sets. Karen talked about how Colour U Cosmetics has been compared to Bobbi Brown and MAC. “Our make-up is high quality, ‘true to color’ and our prices are generally less expensive than theirs.” Karen said she wants Colour U Cosmetics to be a “household name. When women think of make-up, they will automatically think of Colour U Cosmetics.” So, how can customers find Karen’s ‘beautifully packaged’ products? Visit Colour U Cosmetics’ online store at: www.colourucosmetics.com, or by visiting one of the stores in Georgia (Arbor Place Mall, Cumberland Mall, the Mall at Stonecrest or Northlake Mall). In my opinion, just like the wrong shoes can “break” a nice outfit, beautiful make-up can “make” a woman stand out, accent her outfit, etc. Women notice details, and we notice when someone’s make-up is tight or… not so right. That being said, “Thank you, Karen!” I, for one, appreciate you paying attention to the unique make-up needs for women of color. Also, as a consumer, the fact that Colour U Cosmetics’ make-up is “true to color” clearly separates it from some of the other cosmetic companies. ■ www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

“None of us are as good as All of Us.” By Lisa Earley ost of us have heard the phrase, “none of us are as good as all of us.” Well, Winc Atlanta business team, Dereck Wallace, Terry Jones and Askia Innis have breathed life into that saying. These three gentlemen have brought their diverse talents together, and are making a name for themselves in the Atlanta community. As an entrepreneur, you want to “get the job done.” So, you go to people who you know are capable, competent and ‘take care of their business.’ About 12 years ago, Dereck Wallace did just that. He approached Terry Jones, who had significant experience in graphic arts, photography and web design, and asked him to come on board. “Terry is the ‘techie’ on the team, and he handles all components of graphic design and internet marketing,” Said Wallace. Dereck’s professional background consisted largely of event planning and night club promotions, and he wanted to add another layer and round out his team, so he hired Askia Innis to serve as a senior account manager. While Dereck oversees all components of the business, “Askia is the mouthpiece of Winc, and we love his energy and tenacity,” Wallace continued. Winc offers a smorgasbord of services, from event planning (fashion and trade shows, weddings, grand openings, red carpet galas, etc.), concert promotions, marketing and promotion concepts, and graphic & web design. They have worked with several Hollywood notables, such as

Rockmond Dunbar, Darrin Dewitt Henson, Jennifer Holiday, Jennifer Hudson, Monica and Shemar Moore, to name a few. The Winc team will be very involved with this year’s Peachtree Village International Film Festival. PVIFF is taking place in Atlanta, August 16-19. They are responsible for securing Angie Stone, who will be participating in an entertainment forum, Remy Martin as the liquor & beverage sponsor, and Colour U Cosmetics, the official make-up for the film festival. During PVIFF, Winc business partner Askia Innis will be “practicing what Winc preaches” in terms of event planning, and he will be hosting his “Who’s Who” Birthday Bash. So, “who” will be attending this birthday bash? Come and see for yourself, ladies and gentlemen! Please visit Winc’s website for details: www.wincatlanta.com. (I don’t know about you, but my face will be in the place for sure! I’m looking forward to celebrating Askia, aka “Mr. Personality!”) Keep your eyes and ears open for these three gentlemen, Atlanta. Don’t sleep on Winc. Before you can blink an eye, they will be putting some folks on the map! People often say, if you’re a “Jack of all trades, then you’re a master of none.” But what about Askia, Dereck and Terry? These gentlemen have indeed mastered their respective trades as individuals, and collectively, they have created a dynamic unit. Thanks for the reminder, fellas…. “None of us are as good as All of Us.” To learn more about the comprehensive services offered by Winc, please visit www.wincatlanta.com. ■ TRENDSETTERS TO TRENDSETTERS | JULY/AUGUST 2012

BLACK BEAUTYSHOP HEALTH FOUNDATION LAUNCHES ‘BEAUTY N BLACK WELLNESS TOUR’ Margo LaDrew, Executive Director of the Black BeautyShop Health Foundation, announces the kickoff of the 'BEAUTY N BLACK WELLNESS TOUR' Saturday, June 30th in Los Angeles BLACK PR WIRE

I

n an effort to improve the health of African American families, the Beauty N Black Wellness Tour will turn beauty salons into centers for health information and screening, starting with a June 30th launch in Los Angeles. Women visiting the salons will have the opportunity to talk with experts about common health concerns and to get screened by a health professional for diabetes, high blood pressure and HIV. The Black BeautyShop Health Foundation (www.blackbeautyshop.org) will produce the nine-city tour in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association and the AIDS He althcare Foundation. “Women are the health CEO of the family,” said Margo LaDrew, executive director of the Black BeautyShop Health Foundation. “Given that black women visit the salon an average of 2.5 times a month, the beauty shop is an ideal place to educate women and equip them with practical tools for improving their family’s health.” Ms. LaDrew is an expert at the intersection of beauty and health for African American women. She is a former divisional sales manager with Carson-Johnson products, which is a leader in hair care brands for black women. Additionally, Ms. LaDrew spent more than four years with the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program. Under that organization’s banner, she assisted the founder in developing, launching and implementing all programs, coordinated the national tours and also produced the African American Men’s Health & Empowerment Summits. All told, Ms. LaDrew helped to deliver health screenings to more than 25,000 men in 26 cities before stepping down in June 2011. Spurred by her success in the arena of black men’s health, Ms. LaDrew founded the Black BeautyShop Health Foundation, whose mission is to turn Black women’s interest in beauty and personal care into opportunities for raising their awareness of how to prevent and manage disease. In addition to bringing health information into beauty shops, in 2012 the Beauty N Black Wellness Tour will sponsor free day-long health and beauty expos in Atlanta; Chicago; Dallas; New York City; Oakland, CA; Richmond, VA; Washington, DC, and Philadelphia. Susan Evans, MD, a nationally acclaimed dermatologist and media personality who serves as Ambassador for the initiative, said, “As a dermatologist, I know that skin is the window to overall health. I believe the Beauty N Black Wellness Tour will help Black women make the connection between external beauty and internal health.” Toward that end, Dr. Evans will make personal appearances at events in Los Angeles and several cities during the tour. ■

JOSEPH WOOTEN… Hands of Soul By Beverly Hill Shelley, Writer

J

oseph Allen Wooten is a talented keyboardist, writer, arranger, producer, educator, motivational speaker and three time Grammy Nominated artist. He resides in Nashville, TN and is the second youngest of five Wooten Brothers. Joseph is a true artist that loves his music and a family man that loves his children. When it comes to music and family values, he puts self-respect, honesty and being true to his word on top of his list. In 1993 Joseph became the keyboard player/vocalist for the legendary Steve Miller Band playing large venues around the world. He has remained with the band for twenty years. He is the brother of bass player Victor Wooten (Vix Camps at Wooten Woods Retreat, and five time Grammy Award Winner), drummer Roy (Futureman) Wooten (five time Grammy Award Winner), guitarist Regi Wooten and the late Rudy Wooten, sax player. Regi, Joseph’s oldest brother, taught him how to play keyboard and taught Victor to play bass. Joseph and his brothers spent their early elementary school years playing nightclubs as The Wooten Brothers. They shared the stage with Curtis Mayfield, War and other major artists of that time. In the 1970’s the brothers shared the stage with The Temptations, The 48

SOS Band, Stephanie Mills, Dexter Wansel, Ramsey Lewis, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and others. Because there was another Wooten Brothers group from Texas, the band changed their name to The Wootens. In 1985, the group caught the ear of R&B artist/ producer Kashif and they recorded a self -titled album for Arista Records. Joseph became bandleader, musical director, and keyboardist for Kashif. During that same year, Joseph sang background vocals on Whitney Houston’s song “Thinking of You” from her 1985 selftitled debut album. He also sang background vocals for Kenny G. Joseph contributed numerous compositions on two of Victor Wooten’s Grammy Nominated CDs. In between his extensive travels with The Steve Miller Band, he leads his own band, Joseph Wooten & The Hands of Soul. Joseph also serves as keyboardist to his brother Victor and makes occasional appearances playing for his oldest brother, Regi. Joseph Wooten tells aspiring artists to be good at what they do, work hard and be versatile. His advice is, “Be versatile in the amount of things that you can do within the music industry. If you aren’t able to do the thing that you want to do right away, you can still stay in the industry.” He says for example, “If you play guitar, learn to play a lot of styles, maybe even learn to take the guitar apart, put it back together or tune it.

Learn to write, produce, arrange and read music. Most importantly, learn the business part of music. Be as smart as the person you’re trying to sign the record deal with. Because of the availability of the internet, everything is right there for you to learn.” He also states, “Learn to market yourself just as much as you learn music. One of the biggest fast food hamburger chains doesn’t sell the most hamburgers because they make the best hamburgers; they sell the most, because they have the best marketing.” If Joseph wasn’t a musician, he might have pursued other careers. He is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to nutrition. He may have chosen to become a Nutrition Counselor. In his spare time he continues to study nutrition, assessing and analyzing dietary needs. Since one of Joseph’s challenges is asthma, which has been difficult at times, he is adamant about keeping himself in optimal health. He says he wants to play music for a long time. Joseph Wooten says that everything affects creativity, because we are inspired by everything. Grief came to him in 2010. Within a year of each other Joseph lost his brother Rudy and his beloved mom. For him he says, “These life changing situations give a more vivid picture of our mortality.” He states that his challenges make him feel deeper, and give him more to write about. “Walk da Walk” with Jazz Saxophonist Antoine Knight By Angela P. Moore-Thorpe

F

rom the big screen to ‘Knight’ time in the city, Jazz Saxophonist Antoine Knight is clearly on a mission. When this extremely talented, soulful sax man blows his horn, he puts his heart and soul into his music and takes his audience on an unforgettable musical journey. Known to mesmerize his audience with his cool improvisations and deep urban grooves, Knight has entertained and engaged thousands across the country with traditional and smooth jazz. Knight, an Atlanta-based versatile musician, is no stranger to the Atlanta jazz circuit and on any given weekend if you’re lucky you may catch him blowing his horn at plethora of places in the city. He also performs at hundreds of jazz cafes and restaurants, private parties, weddings and corporate events across America. “Music is what I have to give of myself as a person. I must be able to tell my story like nobody else. I’m not trying to impress anybody. Playing to “impress” is selfgratification. When I play, I play to bless God’s people. It is a gift that I have,” says Knight. Since the release of his debut album, he has shared the stage and played with numerous luminaries to include: Angela Bofill, Najee, Kim Waters, Ronnie Laws, Miki Howard, Vesta, Steve Oliver and Marcus Johnson. He received his first big break when he was hired by Producer Norman Connors to play for Angela Bofield and Jeane Carne. He also played in the house band for the Atlanta Falcons football team in the early 2000s, performed regularly for hundreds of VIPs, appeared at the Atlanta Jazz Festival in 2007 and 2010, the Suwannee Jazz Festival, Atlanta Wings Festival, Wednesday WindDown Series in Centennial Olympic Park, numerous jazz spots on the Atlanta jazz circuit and locations on the East and West Coast. Knight’s musical influences include: Art Porter, Gerald Albright, Everett Harp, Najee and Kim Waters. Born and raised in Pensacola, Florida, Knight’s childhood was filled with music -- starting with an 8-track tape his aunt had of Junior Walker and continuing on through his dad’s John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley’s albums. While in high school, he was active in the marching and symphonic band, but somehow he lost interest after high school. Upon entering college at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, he majored in engineering and minored in military science. Knight worked as an engineer and is

presently in the U.S. Army Reserves, but his love for music brought him back to performing. After graduating from college, he visited a college buddy in Atlanta and his passion for the sax reawakened and the rest is history. While Knight played the saxophone throughout his school years, it was at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church where he performed with Jennifer Holiday, and Yolanda Adams. While he promoted his first CD “In the Red,” he received national recognition when it aired in over 50 cities across the country, which catapulted Antoine into becoming Atlanta’s first independent artist to get picked up by Radio One Broadcasting, on the station formerly known as WJZZ 107.5 FM. Knight released his sophomore CD, “Walk Da Walk,” in 2010 and it still receives phenomenal responses from audiences across the country. Knight’s, “Walk Da Walk,” was featured nationally on the “Weather Channel” as the “Artist of the Month” and highly ranked on Atlanta’s jazz radio station, WCLK. “For me, “Walk Da Walk,” is a journey of my testimony that has never ended. I’ve been battle tested and will emerge stronger and ready for whatever lies ahead. We all have had testimonies and journeys that we’ve walked, and “Walk Da Walk” is my way of conveying my own experience through music,” says Knight. While Knight’s passion is blowing his horn, he recently landed his debut acting role in the African-American remake of “Steel Magnolias”, set to be released later this year on Lifetime, alongside Academy Award nominee Queen Latifah, Emmy winner Alfre Woodard, Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad, and Grammy winner Jill Scott. Stay tune. There is no stopping him now. Knight is well on his way to becoming one of the jazz industry’s most influential saxophonist. ■ Check out his music at www.reverbnation.com/antoineknight or www.blowdahorn.com. CHAUNTAE THE FULLNELSON

C

hauntae The FullNelson a native of Columbus, Ohio has completely redefined what it means to be from "The Birthplace of Aviation" as she represents with her team, "Team FullNelson." Chauntae The FullNelson was born in Columbus, Ohio in Olde Town East Columbus. Raised in Nelson Park, for the majority of her life where she is known as not an emcee, but as the nicest hooper in the hood. Nelson Park or as the natives call it "EastGate" is home to Chauntae The FullNelson and to this day her most avid supporters reside there. It was in Nelson Park Apartments that Chauntae The FullNelson recorded her first piece of musical work. With a boom-box, an old TLC tape, a neighbor’s toilet set was the drum machine, a childhood friend provided the singing vocals, and you guessed it, Chauntae the FullNelson provided the hip hop flow. Growing up Chauntae The FullNelson aspired to be a sophisticated woman in marketing, but remained in choir and theatre. A scholar athlete, mentor, mentee, and volunteer music was always the relevance. Chauntae The FullNelson would rap everywhere for miles and miles, cd to cd, however her eyes were pried on being a professional woman. After dating an artist who attempted to silence her music, Chauntae The FullNelson decided to manage an artist she would then write songs for. The new artist provided a sense of artistic relief which all came to a screeching halt once the young singer was accidentally murdered by her brother one year later. It would be in this year that Chauntae The FullNelson decided that enough was enough and was physically forced into a cypher where her vocabulary, style, wit, and openness allowed her to conquer the stage. Two weeks later Chauntae The FullNelson was approached by an entertainment company to perform at their event, however when the event date approached she was asked to join the contest where she freestyled her way through several groups and two other solo acts. The special invited guest, an artist formally with Motown, would return to Ohio that following week where Chauntae The FullNelson would once again be asked to charm the audience with her artistic, genuine, freestyle and wit. Chauntae the FullNelson would go on to do 23 shows within the next two months to follow while recording her highly demanded soundtrack, The FullNelson. Chauntae The FullNelson has remained consistent in hip hop performing live in over 30 cities, and currently on a selfbooked campaign tour entitled, "Chauntae The FullNelson Pre50

time between being interviewed, preparing for an opening night that evening in Dallas, and flying out the next day to L.A. to go right into rehearsal and film. So, when he caught his breath and we connected again, he said, “I’m sorry, Carol… I'm just extremely busy; but in the meantime, take a look at these,” as he sent over some short films, reality shows and comedy pieces that he’s working on currently. I found some of the films to be serious and dramatic, while others were very funny. I am happy to say that all of them were captivating and they all left me wanting more. As we talked more on his new direction he stated, “I’m in control of my own career. I just signed a major deal with Queen Latifah’s film studio, Flavor Unit Entertainment. Things have changed in terms of the way I do business. Now when I go into a producer’s office, instead of them just giving me a script to read, I’m there bringing them one of mine also,” said Ford as he laughed. Tommy is currently working on collaborations with Usher, Alicia Keys, Jasmine Guy, Clifton Powell, Faith Evans, Bigg Gipp (Goodie M.O.B.), Lil Jon and a host of others, for the Independent Distribution Group (IDG), which will launch Atlanta’s premiere film and television distribution channel for the web and Connected Television. As we closed, he left us with this thought, “Artists in general should learn to do their jobs; meaning what they were born to do, and not just have an occupation, something they get paid to do. Remember, whether it’s music or comedy, people look for healing from a dying world through the Arts.” You can follow Tommy Ford on twitter @thomasmikalford and learn more about him on the web at www.TommyFord.com. ■ www.TRENDTOTRENDMAG.com

that opportunity grows less and less and I want to be sure to add to the pot of creating opportunities for us to work. The entertainment business has changed so much with all of the cable stations out there. We’ve been on our grind with my production company for eight years now. People are looking for stuff and we have a plethora of products to offer the networks.” With the GALS project up, Terri admits that she is now going to focus on roles for herself as a leading lady. “I think the time is right now and I’m looking forward to focusing on that.” In a further effort to be a part of the solution to a lack of resources and opportunities, Terrie has opened The Green Room Actor’s Lounge located in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. She says it’s more than just a theatrical book store, It’s a place where aspiring artists can come to be nurtured. The Green Room Actor’s Lounge also provides workshops and open- mic sessions and networking events, along with books and resource materials for artists to help hone their crafts. Terri says that she even has some of her industry friends to stop by to offer advice, encouragement and teach acting workshops to both kids and adults. “I created the lounge because there was nowhere in Atlanta where actors/actresses could go to get information. It’s a place where they will learn what it means to be in this business and to be introduced to the business like I was. They will realize that there are no shortcuts and you have to put in the hard work.” The Green Room Actor’s Lounge also offers an array of soul warming treats such as chili, sandwiches, coffee and pastries. “There’s a very nurturing energy when you walk in,” Terri says. “It’s like Starbucks on steroids!” ■

her infectious, “down-to-earth” personality and her warm smile. {I agree with you, Richard! I’m one of her biggest fans, and she has always struck me as a “ sista from next door-type.” Love her!!} One of Richard’s most recent projects with Queen Latifah, was Joyful Noise. This movie was released in January 2012, and some of it was filmed in Atlanta. “When we filmed Joyful Noise, that was the most time I had ever spent in Atlanta, and I actually like the city,” said Lyons. “If I wanted to have a second home somewhere in the States, it would be in Atlanta. I could see myself there… it’s clearly the ‘Hollywood’ of the South.” Lyons spoke very well of this place so many affectionately call ‘Hotlanta.’ He recalled the beautiful climate, the energy/vibe, the friendly people and a restaurant called, “The Flying Biscuit.” Mr. Lyons will be back in Atlanta to lend his expertise during the 2012 Peachtree Village International Film Festival (PVIFF), August 16-19, in Atlanta, GA. He will be teaching a master class—“The Ten Commandments of Acting.” Richard loves teaching! He likes to keep it light and fun; he cracks jokes and wants to make participants in his workshops feel comfortable. Anyone who is interested in acting can participate in his master class. Who would be a better person to teach a class on acting, than a person who has so many people with whom he has worked, and these individuals have been nominated and won numerous awards for their craft. Queen Latifah has been nominated for more than 40 awards for various roles since the late 90’s, and she has won BET, Golden Globe, Image, and SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards for her roles in the following films: Chicago, Hairspray, Life Support, and The Secret Life of Bees. Richard has also worked with Jennifer Hudson for her role in Dreamgirls, which she claimed an Oscar for

“Best Supporting Actress.” Shia LaBeouf was under Richard’s tutelage when he won a Daytime Emmy Award for his role in Disney’s Even Stevens. In addition to working with these incredibly talented Hollywood notables, Mr. Lyons has worked with other celebrities such as Kelly Rowland, Serena Williams, Thomas Jones and Usher, to name a few. Richard has a full plate these days, but he’s not complaining. He’s working with the cast of The Hustle, which airs this fall on the Fuse Network. It’s about two hip-hop artists and their challenges and struggles as they rise to fame. In addition, Mr. Lyons is currently transitioning to directing. He has directed three episodes of the Wannabes domestically, and 90 episodes internationally. “Acting Coach Extraordinaire,” also known as Richard Lyons, doesn’t view himself as an untouchable~Hollywood~insider. He’s approachable and willing to work with anyone who is serious and willing to put in the necessary work to hone their acting skills. Richard likes to help bring out the best in people. “I’ll work with anyone, and I work with people I believe in,” said Lyons. Most of Richard’s clients come from referrals and word of mouth advertisement. Oftentimes agents will contact him to work with their clients. You can check him out on facebook and become a fan, but the best way to contact him is email: richardlyonsactorsstudio@yahoo.com. So, who will be the next protégé of Mr. Richard Lyons? Stayed tuned, folks. ■
