Beauty Oil Train Your Hair Like A Pro

By Kajsa Hallberg

Beauty

Having to wash your hair every single day is a hassle for anyone, let alone busy college students. Oily hair becomes especially tedious when washing it cuts into time you could be sleeping. Enter: oil training. With the right amount of discipline, hair products and patience, your hair can enter a new routine where those pesky oils do not build up so quickly and you will end up with happier and healthier hair. First, let’s talk about why our hair gets as oily as it does. Our body generates natural oils on the scalp as a way to keep hair healthy and well moisturized. However, distribution of those oils along the hair is not always even, which leads to build up on our roots and that dreaded greasy look. Helping those oils make their way down our hair helps prevent build-up and is also the first step in training it. In an interview with Refinery 29, celebrity stylist Nikki Providence says a good brush (real boar-bristle is best because it carries the oils well) helps move the oils down the shaft of your hair. After

detangling, start at the roots and move in single, smooth strokes down to the ends of the hair. For those whose hair texture does not allow for dry brushing, she recommends a similar process on wet hair done to the best of your ability. This brushing process should be done twice a day to help prevent oil build-up during the day and night. The next step in training your hair is to make sure you have

the right hair products. Many shampoos are made with ingredients like silicone that build up in your hair and make hair appear oily. Hairstylist Derek Yuen told Refinery 29 he tells his clients to stick to shampoos that are free of silicone and oils that would also build up in your scalp, making them gentle on the hair. This prevents over-cleansing of your hair and cuts back how much oil is produced every day. Making sure that you have the right conditioner is also

important. Like shampoo, the conditioner should be free of silicone and oils to prevent coating the hair. Providence says to condition only the bottom portion of your hair, not near the roots or scalp. Some conditioners, especially heavy ones, can irritate the scalp and inflame the hair follicles, leading to more oil production. She also recommends to do an occasional hair mask, again not near the roots or scalp, if your hair feels dry. The last product to be wary of is dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is great for keeping hair from becoming too oily in between washes, but only if applied before the oil is produced. Yuen says he tells his clients to only use dry shampoo on clean hair to soak up oil as it is being produced, and to prevent adding to buildup. Dry shampoo can be versatile when used correctly. It can help create a desired texture for styling and add volume to the roots if applied to clean hair. Now for the actual training of your hair. Like any new habit or routine, starting simple and working into it is the best way to go. If new hair care products are required to replace what you have, follow your schedule as you normally would for about a week so your hair can adjust. Then, start with washing your hair every other day. This allows your hair to adjust to not washing every day. Early in the new routine, your hair may

be on the oily side on days you don’t wash, but it will eventually adjust. Once your hair has gotten used to the new cycle, continue to spread out your washes based on what is best for you. Sally-Ann Tarver, a consultant trichologist for The Cotswold Trichology Centre & Theradome, told Marie Claire she suggests washing every two or three days depending on how dry or oily

your hair is, and those with naturally curly hair may even go longer between washes as its texture disguises oils more. She also says that brunettes should limit their washes to only about two times a week if they can. Recent research has come out showing that brown hair tends to suffer more from shampoo because the product dehydrates the hair and draws out the pigment. As you work into this new routine for your hair, you

will hopefully notice an improvement in its health and appearance. If you find that time between washes is not working out, don’t be afraid to just stick to a more frequent washing schedule or, if a scalp treatment is needed, look into various scalp oils to help regulate your production of natural oils. Once you find the right system for you, your hair will be on its way to a happier and healthier life and you’ll be able to hit the snooze button with no regrets. It’s a win-win situation for your hair and your morning schedule.

Trend is starting a new series where our writers will interview an editorial director each month about their beauty routines and report back with the details. First on the list is Breanna Bruening, the beauty editor of Trend and a s ophomore majoring in journalism and apparel merchandising and design.

Taking care of her skin is something that Bruening does every day, no matter the circumstance. “I’m the person who will take my face wash to a party so that I’m able to wash my face,” Bruening said. Bruening’s skincare routine focuses on being gentle because, like a lot of people, she was harsh on her skin in her earlier years. Since that’s a priority, she opts for a soy face wash. “A soy face wash is less abrasive and gentler on the skin,” Bruening said. It

skin as clear and flawless as possible. After toner and serum, she always makes sure that she uses a thick, rich moisturizer. “When I was younger I thought since I had oily skin that I shouldn’t moisturize,” Bruening said. This is a common misconception, and according to studies from the Mayo Clinic, you should always moisturize your face. Using products that combat oil can sometimes strip your face of its natural oils, causing it to become dry. In the end, your face will overproduce

will still still remove dirt and impurities, just without the harsh ingredients in a regular face wash. After over-exfoliating in the past, Bruening makes sure that she doesn’t exfoliate everyday. If you have sensitive skin, this can irritate it more and lead to breakouts. Every night, she uses a Witch Hazel Toner as well as a serum from The Ordinary. The serum is only six dollars, and works well to keep her

oil to compensate for what it’s lacking. As for masks, Bruening likes to do them about once a week. She recommends choosing clay masks for problem skin to suck out impurities without over drying. “I like the Sephora brand masks and the Que Bella masks from Target,” Bruening said. “You just have to look out for ingredients like alcohol and Dimethicone which can dry out skin and clog pores.”

“I’m the person who will take my face wash to a party so that I’m able to wash my face,” Bruening said.

Beauty Routines

Beauty While Bruening’s skincare routine is consistent day in and day out, her makeup routine varies depending on the day. One of the biggest deciding factors is time, which most college students can relate to. Bruening usually gravitates towards a more natural look, but regardless of whether she is wearing less makeup or more, eyebrows are always done. “Brows have always been important to me,” Bruening said. She uses a brow pencil and a clear gel to enhance the natural shape of her brows. Depending on the day, she switches between a

Whether she’s wearing foundation or not, she explains that “it just makes the nose look cute and it looks good in pictures.” For highlighter, she uses Wet n’ Wild, which retails for $5 and comes in a couple of different shades. Bruening doesn’t use foundation on a consistent basis, but when she does, it’s always Covergirl Vitalist Healthy Elixir Foundation. “It evens out the skin and it looks natural,” Bruening said. “It isn’t dry or mattifying.”

clear or tinted brow gel for more color and impact. For Bruening, curling her lashes is another essential part of her beauty routine. Even when she isn’t wearing mascara, it gives the lashes a lift which makes her look more awake. She opts for mascara if she’s feeling it, but she likes to give her lashes a break because it helps them grow faster. While the highlighter trend is having its moment right now, Bruening chooses to only add a little bit of highlighter to the nose.

an orange or coral shade. “I already have a lot of redness in my face, and I don’t want to add more by using a pink blush,” Bruening said. Using a fanned highlighter brush, Bruening applies the blush to the high points of her cheeks and brushes to her temples. For the finishing touch, Bruening uses a lip gloss or creme lipstick. These both provide comfort and an effortless look to the lips. Her all-time favorite is the original Fenty Gloss Bomb. Retailing at $18, she insists

When it comes to blush, she chooses

that it’s worth every penny. Another one of her favorite lip products is Bite Beauty’s French Press Lip Gloss. “It smells just like coffee and it’s so nice,” Bruening said. She uses the shade Salted Caramel, but the range offers other coffeeinspired colors for a variety of skin tones. Whether your beauty routine looks like Bruening’s or not, finding one can help increase your confidence. Taking time to care for yourself is vital. Even if, as she showed, it’s doing simple things like making sure to wash your face and moisturize. Regardless of whether you wear one product or 20, what’s most important is that you feel good about the skin that you’re in!

Anyone involved in the beauty community is constantly searching for new beauty trends and ways to feel confident. This past year, faux freckles have been seen on Selena Gomez in her Fetish music video and on celebrities like Kendall Jenner. When done correctly, faux freckles are a great beauty trend that creates a natural, youthful

look. The end result of this beauty trend should make others think: “are those freckles real?” After researching multiple beauty bloggers’ techniques, trendwtesting and speaking with licensed esthetician Tawny Olson, Trend has compiled three faux freckle commandments to live by.

Use a thin pencil. The first step to creating faux freckles is to use an eyebrow pencil and place down your dots. Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Brow Wiz in a lighter brown shade is a great option because its thin tip creates a more natural freckle. If you have a brow pomade on hand, another option would be to use it with a very fine detail brush to form your freckles. Remember: it is always easier to add more to a freckle than to try to downsize, so start small. Blend the freckles by dabbing. Freckles are best applied last after your daily makeup routine, but they can also be applied before contouring and highlighting. This dulls the intensity of the freckle, creating a more natural look. A Morphe M250-0 detail brush is a good option when using a pomade.

Place the freckles where they would naturally form. Freckles appear fake when they are only concentrated in one area, so think natural. Freckles naturally form on the sides of the nose and cheekbones where the sun hits the skin. Apply more freckles in these areas and few on other places around the face, including the forehead. Creating layers is important to create a realistic look. Not all freckles have the same intensity, so feel free to add size varieties and clusters.

By Autymn Olson

Beauty

To create layers, blend the freckles with a beauty sponge to set the freckles into the skin. Do not smear the freckles, dabbing the sponge into the skin will prevent the freckles from smearing. After following these three steps, applying more freckles will create that layered look. Add more to the sides of the nose, cheekbones and outward. Applying blush, contour and/or highlight, and then adding a few more freckles is another good technique. Esthetician Tawny Olson has natural freckles. When she applies makeup, her freckles are covered, so she sometimes goes over them with an eyebrow liner to enhance them. “I use a Beauty Blender

to make them more diffused in pigment, Olson said. Blending the freckles is one of the most important tips in perfecting faux freckles. Sometimes less is more. Faux freckles are an adorable beauty trend that can add to any look. Applying the products correctly will create a natural and youthful look. To make the most of this trend, think realistically when applying. Use a thin eyebrow pencil or a brow pomade with a fine detail brush and place the freckles where they naturally form. The more the freckles are blended, the more authentic the look will be.

How to Mix Patterns Like a Pro

By Kendra Esau

Fashion

Fashion is all about taking risks, but sometimes that can be scary. Mixing patterns can either lead to a unique and bold look, or a headache for people who gaze at you for too long. Here are five tips to help you mix patterns like a pro.

1.

Swap out your solids for a simple print.

2.

Think about color.

The task of finding multiple patterns that won’t look crazy together seems a little daunting, so why not start out simple? Try taking an outfit you already wear that features a patterned piece and a solid piece, and trading the solid item out for something with a simple print on it. For example, if you wear a printed skirt with a white button-up top, try trading the white button-up for one with stripes or small polka dots. This is a good place to start because you’re only mixing two prints and there’s nothing too crazy going on.

Although it might seem obvious, color plays a huge role in if the patterns you’re thinking about putting together will work or not. As you pick out the pieces you plan on mixing, ask yourself, “would I pair these colors together normally?” and “do these colors look good together?” Asking yourself these questions can help you make sure that you aren’t making any color matching errors and mistaking them as the boldness that comes from mixing patterns. In an interview with Glamour, fashion designer Tanya Taylor advises, “A fool-proof way to print mix is to match a lighter print with a darker [print].”

3.

How to Mix Patterns Like a Pro

By Kendra Esau

A common theme to successfully mix prints is to find similarities within the patterns so they can easily be matched with one another. Size is no exception to this rule. When selecting prints to mix and match, look at the shapes and designs of the print. If you pair prints that have a similar design with one another, a sense of automatic cohesion is reached based on the similar appearance.

4.

Break up mixed patterns with a solid.

One of the main problems that you face when figuring out how to mix patterns is the fact that they can all blend together and look overwhelming. In order to avoid this, try pairing the patterns you plan on mixing with a solid piece to separate them from one another, or just add a basic piece in order to bring it all together. You could achieve this look by pairing something classic, like a denim jacket, over an outfit with multiple prints. This will help tie everything together and adds a classic element to the look.

5.

Fashion

Mix similar prints of different sizes.

Keep silhouettes simple.

It’s easy to put too many differing elements into an outfit, especially when you have a lot going on with print. To keep this from happening, avoid grabbing any pieces that feature odd cuts and silhouettes such as ruffles, funky hems or excess bagginess. This will keep the focus on the print mixing of the outfit itself.

Wallet-Friendly Fashion

As a college student, you’re the epitome of the phrase “ballin’ on a budget.” You may find yourself sitting there, drowning in a sea of unread textbook pages and look down to see you’ve been wearing the same sweatshirt for the past three days. We’ve all been there. Keeping up with the latest fashion trends can hurt your head and also your wallet. Nowadays, it feels impossible to find a cute outfit at an affordable price. Designers seem to just find a Fruit Of The Loom white tee, poke a few holes in it and then sell it for $70. Next thing you know, your Instagram feed is filled with a collage of super models rockin’ that same ridiculously overpriced tee along with with some equally overpriced jeans. How rude of them, right? But there’s no need to fret, there is a way you can rock a new and trendy look while also staying within your budget. All you need is Google and a keen eye for some similar pieces Many celebs, such as Kourtney Kardashian, have lately been rocking the jean-on-jean look. This fashion statement has become popular amongst many celebs and apparel industries. Recent paparazzi photos show Kourtney strutting downtown in a pricey Alexander McQueen twopiece jean skirt and jacket set. The

outfit is accented with a small Dior purse and shiny Prada knee-high black boots. To be frank, all of those name brands are known to be out of many people’s price ranges. It’s a good thing that there are more wallet friendly brands, such as Forever 21, Zaful, Lulus and ASOS, selling the same looks. Follow these quick and easy steps and you’ll be ready to rock these iconic looks and make the same big statements.

Step one: find an item you desire, such as Kourtney’s denim-on-denim look. It is very easy to open up Instagram or Twitter and be bombarded with a plethora of new fashion looks that are in that week. Step two: search. Get out your magnifying glasses because it’s time to investigate. For example, if you Google search “Kourtney Kardashian denim on denim” you will be directed to a page filled with similar options. Step three: choose. Find the piece that best fits your own personal style, but make sure the site seems credible if you are ordering online. If you are physically in a store with dressing rooms, make sure the pieces fit well and aren’t easily tarnishable. Step four: purchase! Your wallet will be thankful that you chose to take the cheaper route.

Along with keeping up on current celebrity fashion statements, there is a new season of fashion trends coming soon. According to Elle magazine, a few of the up and coming fall 2018 trends include plaid prints, 80’s-inspired pieces, hot pink and animal prints. You can find these styles for cheap in all your favorite stores if you’re willing to look hard enough. The shopping world is your oyster, so get out there and explore your style!

Football season is upon us once again, and with that comes everyone’s favorite seasonal runway: the tailgate. The time when the parking lot becomes a party haven where students, faculty and fans from all over Iowa come to showcase their cyclone spirit. Long gone are the days of throwing on an Iowa State T-shirt and a pair of jeans, today it is all about

the unique and personal touches that can be added to the outfit. To take some of the stress out of choosing that perfect look, here are three of the most popular tee modifications for this football season and how you can do them yourself.

Cropped Tee With ‘V’ Shape Cut Out According to Jacky Perry, a Barefoot employee who let Trend in on the latest tee modifications, this cropped style is the most popular and one of the easiest to achieve. Step one is to select a tee of your choice, keeping in mind that you will be cutting a ‘V’ into the center of the neckline later on. Once you have picked a tailgate shirt, it is time to chop it into a crop by cutting a straight line along the bottom of the shirt. How much you cut off is completely up to you. After cutting off the desired amount, fold the tee in half so that the sleeves are directly on top of one another and the design on the front is facing up. Next, cut a straight line at an angle starting from where the shirt has been folded up until you hit the neckline. Where you start your cut depends on how deep of a ‘V’ you prefer. Finish cutting the triangle off by cutting under the collar to detach the shorter side of the fabric. Open the shirt back up and observe your work, if the cut is not as deep or as wide as you would like, just repeat the steps above to modify it. And tada, the finished product is a super cute and trendy tailgate tee, and even better, you can tell everyone you did it yourself!

Strapless T-shirt Dress

This style has become my absolute favorite! I cannot stop wearing it around my apartment, just ask my roommate. It seems impossible that a men’s extra large tee could magically transform into an adorable strapless dress, so allow me to let you in on the trick. First, select

Fashion a men’s tee of your choice, just make sure it is a stretchy fabric and that it is long enough to be a dress. Perry suggests not using the comfort color brand due to its lack of stretch. Then, pull your whole body through the neck hole until it rests along the chest as a strapless dress would. Finally, tie the sleeves around the back into a knot. I would suggest double knotting, otherwise it comes loose very quickly. You have now created a simple and comfy tailgating dress in just two easy steps!

Fashion

Mixing Fashion and Football

T-shirt Tube Top According to Barefoot employees, this is the newest and one of the top trending styles when it comes to transforming your tailgate tee. Although creating the adorable tube top may look complicated, it is very simple and leaves you with an extra bonus shirt! First, as usual, select any tee of your choice. Ensure that it has a longer pattern on the front because it will be the bottom half of the tee that will transform into the tube top. Proceed to cut the tee like you would to create a normal crop top, then with the remaining bottom fabric, use what is left to form the tube top. Turn the fabric to the back and cut a straight line down the middle, then cut out triangles on either side of the cut you just made so that the left over ends can be tied into knots in the back. You have now created your very own tube top, plus the original crop top. Play on and go Cyclones!

Fad or Fab? The Real Deal on Health Drink Culture

By Taylor Gage and Logan Nichols

Lifestyle

In today’s pop culture, trends are constantly going in and out of style. Whether it is fashion, slang or diets, we are constantly trying to keep up with the latest, biggest thing. One of the more recent crazes is incorporating health drinks into our daily diets. There is a plethora of brands that make their own juices, smoothies, etc. that claim to possess different health benefits. Are they worth it? Let’s find out. Daily Harvest : Acai and Cherry Smoothie Daily Harvest sells many different products such as blendable smoothies, build your own boxes and harvest bowls. But the one that I decided to test for the purpose of this article is the Ready to Blend Smoothie. According to the Daily Harvest website, this smoothie has four specific benefits: immunityboosting, anti-inflammatory, beautifying and digestive support. This smoothie was exceptionally easy to prepare, all I had to do was add a base and blend. I used coconut water for my base, and it worked perfectly! The smoothie itself also tasted great. The only negative that I noticed was that the texture was not as smooth as I have typically experienced with other

smoothies. As for the claimed benefits made by Daily Harvest, I can’t say I noticed any of them. I definitely felt full and energized, but no other benefits really struck me. I would absolutely buy this drink again. If you’re interested in trying out a Daily Harvest smoothie yourself, keep in mind that they are only available through online orders. WTRMLN WTR: Cold Pressed Watermelon Juice WTRMLN WTR is a coldpressed bottled juice that is sold in many flavors. For my taste test, I opted for original. This drink was very accessible – I got mine right here in Ames. According to the website, wtrmlnwtr. com, WTRMLN WTR is supposed to give you 24/7 hydration and rejuvenation. After trying this drink, I can say that is undeniably the case. After drinking the 12 oz bottle, I immediately felt refreshed and completely hydrated. The juice itself also tasted great, but was a little sour in my opinion. One reason I found this drink to be so intriguing was because of one of the celebrity endorsements I read on https:// wtrmlnwtr.com/press while researching. In May 2016, Beyoncé praised the brand saying, “I invest in WTRMLN

WTR because it is the future of clean, natural hydration.” After discovering Queen Bey is a fan, I knew this brand was one I had to try, and I do not regret that decision at all. Limitless Matcha Green Clean Tea: sweet mint flavor Upon testing the Limitless Matcha tea, I was surprised – which is exactly the reaction Limitless Matcha seems to want based on the description they provide on their website. “For our matcha lovers who are expecting the unexpected, we have created something that will surely entice and deliver.” I found the tea to be quite different from the vast majority of matchabased drinks I have tasted. The sweet mint flavor is reminiscent of your everyday sweetened tea, but in this case, that isn’t a bad thing. The grain of the matcha is present while still delivering a sweet, refreshing source of hydration. Limitless Matcha boasts health benefits such as caffeine, antioxidants and catechins, which are supposed to enliven and harmonize the metabolism. While there are 10 grams of sugar in the sweet

Lifestyle mint flavored matcha tea, Limitless Matcha also offers alternative drink options, such as unsweetened and sweetened variations and a line of coffeebased products. The brand also uses ceremonial grade matcha powder – an added benefit for the tea connoisseur, as it is the highest grade matcha available. As for the physical effects I felt after consuming this tea, I noticed a spike in my energy and felt decently hydrated. While I cannot say that this drink changed my life or offered any sort of benefit that I can’t possibly find elsewhere, my body thanked me for choosing this healthy alternative. GT’S Synergy Organic Kombucha: cherry chia Before starting this review, I must add a disclaimer that GT’s Synergy Chia Kombucha is not for everyone and is certainly not for the faint of heart when it comes to texture. As someone who has been experimenting with GT’s chia flavors for years, I have come to the conclusion that very few people can tolerate the texture of the chia seeds. I’ve heard descriptions ranging from jam to slime, which do not sound appetizing, but take my word for it: chia kombucha is worth trying out. GT’s Synergy offers a variety of flavors of kombucha, as well as

products such as adaptogenic tea (tea that improves the body’s ability to adapt to stress inducers), live keifers (fermented milk made with the kefir grains containing beneficial yeast) and yogurt which supports the company’s motto of being “for everyone, everywhere.” The cherry chia live kombucha features health benefits such as aminos, polyphenols, enzymes and probiotics due to the fact that kombucha is a raw food. As far as bodily effects go, Synergy claims to renew, rebalance, rebuild, reclaim, rekindle and recharge the body, which I can personally attest to experiencing. After consuming cherry chia kombucha, my body felt rejuvenated and refreshed. As an added note, the packaging on GT’s kombucha is highly effective at drawing in the consumer. Each drink features a different passage selected as its “Words of Enlightenment.” For example, mine said: “In a world where we all live together, why not help one another.” Personally, I find details like this to be uplifting and positive. Who doesn’t want an inspirational quote to start their day off?

#YesFilter

By Rachel Cessna

Lifestyle

Instagram may be a popular platform to share memories and milestones, but it also offers endless possibilities for creativity. The #NoFilter trend is being challenged by the growing popularity of Instagram accounts with themed feeds and carefully edited pictures. If you don’t have a theme or are looking for a way to update your current one, keep reading for tips and ideas.

Transitioning If you already have an Instagram and you don’t want to delete everything you’ve already posted, don’t worry. Transition posts are a great way to split up your feed so the changes between your old and new posts don’t clash. One of the most popular ways to change themes is to post three plain white photos in a row that will sit between your old and new pictures. To see an example, Harry Styles (@harrystyles) used white squares as part of his transition into his posts of his latest tour. However, if that’s not your style, you can get creative and come up with your own set of pictures to use, such as quotes or simple drawings.

Choosing a Theme Choosing a theme can be hard due to the large variety of filters and editing tools that are available. Try choosing a few photos that you would post on Instagram and find a filter that works for all of them. VSCO is a great, free app for experimenting with a variety of filters and tools for editing, and it even gives the option of creating a preset of filters and edits that you can apply to every photo. Ally Hicks, a sophomore in graphic design, says she edits her photos in a way that she feels fits her personality.

“I really like when the images are more vibrant,” Hicks said. “I feel like that is more expressive.” Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, a picture just won’t work with your theme – this is when Instagram stories come in handy. Megan Dale, a senior in public relations, often posts photos on her sorority’s Instagram (@ isudeltagamma). Whenever she runs into this problem and a photo doesn’t fit the theme, she puts it on their Instagram story instead. “A lot of times event posters will not look good on the feed, so we post it on our story,” Dale said. “Also, when we have a lot of pictures from events, instead of making one post with a bunch of pictures to slide through, we post them on our story.” Both Hicks and Dale use VSCO filters for their Instagrams. Hicks says she prefers the filters C1 and C6, whereas Dale says her sorority uses HB1 for all posts. If you don’t know where to start, below are some recipes on VSCO that can be used to create a theme.

Sometimes, keeping a themed Instagram account can be difficult. Not every photo will work, and you won’t know for sure how it’ll look with the rest of your feed until you edit it. If you find yourself lacking creative inspiration, take a look at the array of photos on the VSCO app. “People are a lot more relaxed on VSCO and post pictures that they genuinely think are cool rather than what other people might think is cool,” Hicks said. “I think looking through VSCO is very interesting too; I think it’s very inspiring. I feel like you can get a lot of ideas from it.”

Men in AMD spotlight: Conner Angus

By Emily Smith

Men Name: Conner Angus Year: Senior Major: Apparel, Merchandising, and Design, emphasises in design and menswear Hometown: Cary, Illinois

Changing majors is common, perhaps even typical. But for jeansand-sneakers-clad Conner Angus, a senior in apparel merchandising and design, the decision to switch from computer engineering to the fashion world was a leap of faith. “[On computer engineering] It was ok,” Angus said. “After an internship I had, I decided I didn’t want to do that.” In high school, Angus and friends had an online shop where they sold graphic tees and other items. He found himself reflecting on the store, and decided to take a leap of faith by making the switch to AMD. For him, it was a combination of wanting more creativity, being interested in clothes and his “stupid online shop.” As a male in AMD, Conner has a unique perspective on his own role in the world of apparel at Iowa State. “[Its] definitely a double-edged sword,” Angus said. “I’m a straight white male, and I’ve been very much not a minority all of my life. In AMD, I’m very much a minority.” On stereotypes that surround

AMD males, Angus said that you [AMD male] are presumed to be “gay or a at least a little bit more feminine,” but he wouldn’t say that’s been a problem for him. He believes that is all comes down to having confidence in who you are. On his decision to attend ISU, Angus noted that since he was initially in engineering, it seemed the perfect choice when looking at colleges because of ISU’s reputable engineering program. Upon his change in majors, he stayed positive about the switch to AMD, discovering that ISU is ranked number one in the midwest in the program and second in the nation. When asked about his career aspirations, Angus explained that his options are open. “That’s tough [career aspirations], I don’t know if I have that specifically decided, Angus said. “I want to work on the east coast at the beginning just because it’s faster-paced, exciting and focused on menswear. I don’t necessarily have a preference on what kind of menswear, I’ve done a majority of different kinds. Whatever happens, happens…I’m pretty open to anything.” Angus hopes to leave a positive footprint on the world through his future career. He hopes to bring positivity and good into the world by having the freedom to design whatever his heart desires, and ultimately creating a sense of confidence for those wearing his designs.

Speaking of making a positive impact on others, Angus mentioned his biggest inspiration in the fashion world: Virgil Abloh, the creative director at Louis Vuitton. “For his [Abloh’s] first runway show, he did the most inclusive thing,” Angus said. “The runway was just a big rainbow that fades into different colors, and models were all different ethnicities.” Abloh inspires Angus because he was an underdog in the field due to having no formal training, and now he has one of the top spots in fashion. “The fact that he [Abloh] had no formal training says anything is possible,” Angus said. In addition to Angus’ education at Iowa State, he had the opportunity to intern with Under Armour in Baltimore over the summer. “It was a good summer, and I would definitely go back and work for them,” Angus said. “I interned as a technical designer, which is basically less actual designing and more creating the designs to be made. Going in, I wasn’t excited about the job. But coming out, at least at Under Armour, I think I would enjoy doing that in the future. It broadened my horizons to know what to focus on for my last year.” According to Angus, confidence plays a large factor in AMD. “If you’re stuck between this [AMD] and something else, make sure you have a passion for apparel in general,” Angus said. He also advises present and future AMD students to feel comfortable being creative and coming up with your own ideas. “Over the years, you have to come up with a lot of things,” Angus said. “And in the industry, you have to do that continually. But you also have to believe in what you’re making. If you can do that, you can easily make other people believe in it, too.”

Simple Skincare for Men

By Melissa Van Horn

Men One of the first things busy college students seem to neglect is their skin. The hassle of skincare is that it can be costly and seemingly hard to fit into a busy schedule. Implementing a skincare routine into your daily life as a college man can be easy. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, men’s skin is a little bit thicker than women’s, but should be cared for just as often. Dermatologists stress that washing your face daily is one of the most important steps in skincare. There are many products available for skincare, but purchasing products for your skin-type is very important. The three basic types of skin are dry, oily or a combination of the two. Combination skin means that your skin is dry in some areas and oily in others. Buying products specific to your skin type will leave your skin looking healthier after each use. Jonathon Hoff, a junior in child, adult and family services, shared with Trend how he cares for his skin. Hoff said that he usually does most of his skincare at night because that is when it is most convenient for him. He has found that using a cleanser, moisturizer and a few face masks a week is best for his skin. Hoff uses Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser which runs for $20 at Sephora, but can be found for $10 at Macy’s. A good alternative that can be found in drugstores is Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily

Cleanser for Sensitive Skin, which is around $8. This cleanser is dermatologist recommended and safe for sensitive skin. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizer is Hoff’s moisturizer of choice because it is unscented. Clinique dermatologists recommend unscented products because fragrance can irritate sensitive skin. This moisturizer can be bought at most department stores and online for $28, but a good moisturizing alternative would be Burt’s Bees Daily Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin, which retails for $8.

It’s important to remember that your skin reflects how you’re feeling. For example, you’re stressed because of school and work, haven’t been sleeping well at night or drinking enough water, your skin is going to break out and look just as tired as you feel. A good way to re-energize your skin is with a face mask. Keeping a few face masks on hand to use once or twice a week after a long day can be a great way to unwind. Hoff’s favorites are charcoal masks because of the deep pore cleansing effects. He loves the “Yes to Tomatoes” brand from Target. He typically buys individual masks for $2.99 and stocks up on a few at a time. If finding time for skincare within your morning or night routine is a concern, try putting your cleanser in the shower and utilize it then. Once you get out of the shower, apply your brand new moisturizer and then you’re ready to start the day or head to bed. No matter the time of day, adding a skincare routine into your life is simple and will make you feel better in the long run.
