BY ALLISON MARTYR

T

he task of picking out trendy and affordable outfits while on a college budget can be a daunting task to conquer, but what if it wasn’t anymore? What if dozens of outfit combinations were at your fingertips? Well, maybe they are! Staple pieces are basics that go with virtually anything, or can be worn in a variety of combinations. Planning outfits ahead of time and having a good selection you can alternate between as desired will give you more time for studying and schoolwork. Most of these staple pieces are likely already hanging in your closet:

08_

good pair of jeans denim skirt neutral colored turtleneck little black dress plain white t-shirt denim jacket pair of black boots oversized sweater pair of trainers pleated skirt of any length or color chunky cable knit-scarf few pairs of tights or leggings

These pieces can be combined in a variety of ways to make new and unique outfits that compliment your personal style. By matching these simple pieces with different accessories, not only do you have a functional and timemanageable wardrobe, but you also have the ability to create your own style with ease.

09_

OUTFIT #1 The little black dress and turtleneck combo. This look is versatile and extremely comfortable, and it can easily be dressed up or down depending on your plans for the day. Make this look your own by pairing the two with a fun pair of tights, your favorite scarf, or a bold jacket. A bonus to wearing this outfit is that the shoe options are endless: booties, flats, heels or sneakers all add their own flare to this look!

OUTFIT #2 Denim outfits are very in right now, and are a large part of many people’s wardrobes, making this option easy to style for a variety of outcomes. A simple go-to look is a good pair of skinny jeans and a neutral top. These two staple pieces paired together allow room for the outfit to be styled in countless ways, depending on personal preference. Denim skirts are also very popular and can be paired with a short sleeve shirt, turtleneck or an oversized sweater. Consider layering denim on denim for a more vintage look.

10_

OUTFIT #3 This last outfit is the most casual of the three, but just as cute. A good pair of neutral leggings are a great staple piece that can be worn in many different ways: layered, paired with an oversized sweater, as athleisure, etc. Pairing leggings, an oversized sweatshirt and trainers creates a comfortable, trendy and warm look for Iowa’s chilly winter months.

THRIFTED Where do you affordably find these staple pieces and other essentials if you don’t own them already? Thrift stores are the way to go. Save money and shop local! Ames has a handful of thrift stores including The Loft, Random Goods, Overflow, Goodwill and The Salvation Army. Each thrift store is unique in the kind of clothes that they specialize in.

In the end, what matters most is feeling comfortable and prepared to take on a new day. Allow your personal style to help you achieve the confidence you need to succeed. 11_

few pieces can create the perfect look. A leather jacket paired with a lace bodysuit looks great with faded jeans and a simple pair of short black boots. Another option could be pairing leather pants with a lace top, and adding a pop of red with your accessories or makeup. Pairing black with black is trending now; throwing multiple black garments together makes a stunningly chic look. A jean jacket can help accessorize your outfit and throw a lighter shade into it to provide some striking contrast. Scrunchies, hoop earrings, and a pop of bold color can also make your look edgy yet lively.

with lighter colors, making a fun and playful statement. Light pinks paired with whites creates a soft, beautiful look. White jeans with a lace blush top pairs well with tan shoes, and bell sleeves make a bohemian statement and perfect cute style for a date night. Feminine lace lends a simple, dainty look for any romantic outing. You can have a simple look and still rock the romance.

Incorporating bright jewelry, makeup, shoes or even a top can transform an outfit from something plain to eye-catching with ease. All of these looks can be accomplished with a college closet, yet still look high-end. If you want to go for an edgy look, search your closet for leather and pair it with lace. FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHT BY GRACE RIGDON

W

e all know that February is the month dedicated to a whole lot of love. So why is February’s love so different and made to be so much more special? We can give all thanks to Valentine’s Day. However, this celebration isn’t a one-day thing. Stores start setting up for Valentine’s Day a month before cupid’s arrow hits and the honeymoon phase of Valentine’s Day seems to continue on until about March. We seem to spend February digging through our closets to pull out our best shades of pastel pinks and bold reds to wear throughout the month. But what about makeup? Because we’re all in love with our S.O’s or ourselves, it’s important to feel our best.

20_

The “no-makeup makeup” look has been going viral thanks to Kim Kardashian and every Instagram blogger out there, and everyone is dying to have a natural glow and youthfulness about them. This has led to an emphasis on products that keep the skin soft and naturally beautiful. While highlighting this month of love, we’ve found the best highlighters on the market to keep you feeling your best and keeping a fresh glow to your complexion for this month filled with love. Tarte Cosmetics knows how to formulate highlighters that help skin shine. Whether you prefer a powder, stick or cream highlight, they have the glow you need for a date or night out.

21_

Tarte’s Twinkle Stick Highlighter is easily applied to the cheekbones and nose for a natural glow. This is for the wearer that wants a more casual look. They also have the Tarteist PRO Glow and Blush featured in a Valentine’s Day-inspired color scheme. If you’re wanting to accompany this love-filled month with a rosier highlight, these six powders will give you all the glow you could imagine.

Olivia Wabbe is a junior in Apparel Merchandising and Design and is a true makeup lover. She runs an Instagram makeup page that focuses on skillful eyeshadow looks and her passion for beauty. She tells us that the Anastasia Beverly Hills Amrezy highlighter is her favorite. “I have yet to find a highlight that shines and lasts the way this one does,” Wabbe said.

“I love it because regardless of what eyeshadow look I decide to do, I know it will match. It’s also extremely versatile and I like to use it as an eyeshadow as well. This palette has a ton of product so it will last a long time.” Another brand that takes makeup to the next level is Flesh Beauty. They focus on “Every Color of You,” making for the perfect shades. Flesh Beauty’s Fresh Flesh Illuminating Primer gives your entire face a shimmer lift. They also have Shimmer Drops for every skin tone, and shades Aura and Whisper are perfect pinks to incorporate into your beauty looks this month. There are tons of amazing highlighters out on the market, but these are definitely some of Trend’s hot and happening picks. For this designated month of love, we want you to feel loved and have a face that matches your inside glow.

IN THAT DREAM STATE: EVERLASTING MAKEUP FOR YOUR SPECIAL NIGHT

BY SYDNEY REYSACK

N

ow it’s getting real…butterflies area-fluttering as you carefully begin to plan your perfect date night makeup look. Whether it’s the first or 50th date with your significant other, it’s important to feel beautiful. That makeup you throw on during the day just isn’t going to have the same effect once the sun goes down; in order to pull off a great date night look, you’ll need to turn the glam up a few notches.

After a long day, most foundations and powders will start to separate or run. Need an easy fix? Finishing spray is your new best friend. Take a powder brush and begin to buff your skin in a light circular motion to smooth out your foundation. The key is to moisten the brush enough to add extra product without making it look cakey. If you encounter any unwanted shine after the long day, using a setting powder like the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder will lock in makeup for long-lasting wear and reduce any unwanted shine, creating a smooth canvas for all added products. We know you are wanting to glow on your date, but let’s leave the shine at home.

Charlotte Tilburys Beach Stick Blush in Es Vedra

Adding a rose-colored blush will bring life back to your complexion after a long day by creating a natural flush on the skin. If you want a dewy pop of color to imitate sun-kissed skin year round, try a coral-red toned blush like Charlotte Tilbury’s Beach Stick blush in Es Vedra. Apply the product in small circular motions starting at the back of the cheeks, working your way towards the front where your smile is most prominent. This will instantly give you a youthful and flirty appearance. Always remember to tap off the excess product before application to avoid the clown-cheek look; we don’t want to scare our dates! Somewhere deep inside your makeup bag, you might find a compact labeled “highlighter.” Highlighter creates the lit-from-within look that every makeup guru dreams of. Apply with a small fluffy brush on the tops of your cheekbones and bridge of your nose. The glow will just radiate off you - even your date will feel it! If you wear highlighter during the day, you can easily re-apply before your big night to shimmer on into the evening.

For a sultry date night look, it’s okay to step out of the box. Pops of red, cranberry and burgundy are making a comeback and are more fabulous than ever if executed correctly. Choose a cooler shade in the red family and begin to blend it into the crease. If it looks too red for your liking, follow up with a bronzy brown into the edges and the crease. This will help diffuse the red tone without losing too much pop. Adding a hint of shimmer on the lid will amp up this look even more, followed by a light dusting of shadow under the lower lash line. This creates the perfect sultry smokey eye. To achieve the perfect pouty lip, prep your lips with a light balm to ensure they’re soft and ready for any possible lip-locking! Whether you want to go for a subtle hue of pink or a show-stopping red, lipstick is a fun way to break your usual cosmetic routine. To ensure a kissproof application, choosing a matte lipstick or lip stain works best. Bite Beauty’s Matte Crème Lip Crayon is perfect for date night. Did I mention it was waterproof? Now go get that romantic kiss in the rain - you deserve it!

Follow our guide to get your special someone a makeup gift they’ll swoon over. Being two months into the new year with spring just around the corner, everyone wants their skin looking airy, refreshed and rejuvenated. Beauty brand Glossier believes in wearing makeup to accentuate one’s natural beauty and fully embracing your true self. Self love can affect your overall confidence and performance in everything you do. Looking and feeling your best will make it easier to succeed in life and in relationships.

28_

The Haloscope Dew Effect Highlighter and Cloud Paint blush is the perfect combination to wear when out and about. The combination will contrast the cold and dry February weather by making skin look hydrated and healthy. Your date will love their new flawless skin thanks to these amazing products, and they can use them together to add a little bit of glam to your date nights out. If you are looking to get your S.O something a little more sophisticated, the Generation G Sheer Matte Lipstick is a perfect choice. Your date will not only be falling for this long lasting lipstick, they will be simultaneously falling for you - what a bonus! The matte lipstick has a creamy formula that moisturizes and lasts all night, hopefully preparing your date for that perfect end-of-the-night kiss. The shades vary from light pinks and browns to deep purples; perfect for the month of February.

The light and sheer shades don’t completely mask the wearer’s lips, allowing them to look young while also looking put together. You and your partner will adore the Glossier lip product before and after the date. When your S.O applies their newest Glossier purchases, they will notice an enhancement of their natural and beautiful features thanks to these products. Emily Weiss, the CEO of Glossier, said that as she interviewed hundreds of women, she “became more and more aware of how flawed the traditional beauty paradigm is. It has historically been an industry based on experts telling you, the customer, what you should or shouldn’t be using on your face.” But beauty is what you make of it. Playing around with the newest trends can be fun and exciting, but wearing makeup to emphasize one’s natural beauty is key. Show your partner you care about them by giving them something that helps their best self shine through.

very man, no matter his budget, wants a cologne that smells like a million bucks. Regardless of your price range or scent preference, the perfect cologne for you is out there. This review of three differently priced colognes can serve as a starting guide on your way to finding your signature smell.

$100 and Up

Under $100

Under $25

If you’re looking to drop some serious money on your next scent, consider purchasing the Giorgio Armani Acqua di Giò Absolu. If the name doesn’t give away how fancy this scent is, the price tag that rings in at $130 will. Bloomingdale’s website describes this cologne as “a scent that unfolds into an aromatic heart of patchouli, complemented by warm and ambery woods at the base, to release a new kind of marine freshness.” The light and breezy nature of this scent may be why GQ Magazine calls this scent the “best cologne for the beach bum.” Of course not everyone wants to drop over $100 on a cologne - if that happens to be your situation, consider looking into purchasing Sauvage by Christian Dior. This cologne is one of the top rated scents for men on Amazon, with over 93 percent of the reviews being four to five stars. One standout review says, “Dior Sauvage is a must have and you can thank me later when you start swimming in compliments.” Other customers have similar things to say about this scent, described as “an aromatic fougere fragrance for modern men. Classy, crisp, spicy, clean, warm and uplifting.” This cologne is available for purchase on Amazon for just under $75, which may be considered a hefty price to some, but does cost well below many other high-end scents. If you are in the market for a budget-friendly cologne, grooming and style blog Tools of Men recommends Nautica Voyage by Nautica for men. According to the blog, “Nautica Voyage is a very affordable cologne that comes with great reviews not only for its walletfriendly price, but its famous name and super fresh scent.” This clean and classic fragrance is available for purchase on Amazon for just $15.81 and is Amazon’s No. 1 recommended choice for men’s cologne. Boasting over 5000 Amazon reviews and an average rating of 4.5 stars, this scent seems to be a fanfavorite and a safe bet no matter your personal style. 33_

DATE NIGHT, BY SIERRA HOEGER

hivalry’s not dead. Not yet, at least. Opening car and restaurant doors, flowers in hand and treating their significant others to a night of absolute romance is what most think of when chivalry comes to mind. However, not long after the first date, making subsequent dates just as special can get tricky. Going through the trouble of reservations, deciding the night’s itinerary, finding an outfit to wear and ensuring that your date has the absolute best time is still an important effort to make - no matter the stage in the relationship It can get tiring to always be the “planner.” Deciding what to do, then in turn

38_

getting responses like “I don’t care,” or “Sure, that’s fine,” leaves one questioning whether or not their significant other is truly invested and interested. After going through a multitude of ideas on what to do, it’s tempting to just give up and resort to the classic Netflix and chill. But date night shouldn’t have to be difficult or boring. If you’ve been in a dating slump recently, or maybe just don’t know how to plan that perfect date that will impress your partner, don’t give up yet! Here are some ways to make your partner feel like the happiest person in the world during your date.

PLAY THE PART Alleviate some of the pressures off of your date by playing the “planner” role for a night, or maybe a fun weekend. Look into some things you both might be interested in like playing mini golf, seeing a new movie or going out to eat at their favorite restaurant (even if it might be a bit expensive). Not only will it impress them, it’ll also play into the element of surprise - if you’re good at keeping secrets, that is. Remember to not only keep your interests in mind, but theirs as well. If one person isn’t happy, nobody’s happy.

DRESS THE PART

Typically, women are expected to be dressed-up when going on a date, but that doesn’t mean men can’t get all dressed up for their significant other as well! A nice pair of jeans and a button-up top is perfect for a casual night out. If the date is more formal, wearing a good pair of khakis adds a level of class. Depending on the length of your relationship, gauge what would be appropriate to wear in whatever setting you two are in. Don’t just throw on whatever basketball shorts are laying on your bedroom floor, that are presumed to be clean because they don’t smell. Dressing to the nines for your date night will show your partner how much you care.

ACT THE PART

Ensuring that your significant other feels loved and appreciated is standard for every relationship, but it’s a gold standard on date nights. Compliment your date on their outfit and throw in a few winks. They’ll be melting into a puddle. They’ll know you notice different things about them, and that you want to make an effort to make them feel good. Keeping the conversation going is also a key factor in having a good time on any date. Whether it be the first or 40th date night shared together, playful banter and a good conversation secure the way to a good time. Wherever your date nights take you, the most important thing is that you both have fun. Make sure that both individuals are loved, and feel the love in return.

EMBRACE YOUR SINGLE STATUS DURING CUFFING SEASON

C

uffing season is defined by Esquire as “the time of year when people couple off to combat the cold and loneliness.” During cuffing season, it’s easy to feel left out and like you’re the only single person left on the planet, but it’s about time we learn to embrace our singleness! As stated by Ashley Laderer on the mental health blog Talkspace, “Riding solo is an excellent way to get to know the real love of your life — you!” A great way to embrace being single is taking time for yourself and the things you love. Try taking yourself on a date to the movies or a nice dinner, or carve out extra time weekly to indulge in your hobby. Do more of what makes you smile, and take time to focus on other relationships in your life, like with your friends, family and self. When you’re single, you have more time for you, and this valuable time could be focused on improving your mental health and practicing self care. One way to improve your mental health is to spend more time outside, especially when it’s sunny out. According to Psychology Today, “exposure to sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D, which increases your level of serotonin in the brain. Plus, time in nature is a proven stress reducer.”

Other ways to practice self care are doing things that help you relax. For some people this could be taking a long, hot bath, popping on a facemask and getting in bed early. For others, it’s a movie night in with friends, listening to some of your favorite music and dancing around. Whatever makes you feel relaxed and joyful, make time to do it! If you don’t know what makes your heart feel full, you have plenty of time to figure it out. The Huffington Post described being single as, “some sort of disease everyone wants to get rid of,” which is often promoted in society and pop culture. But the truth is, there’s no shame in being single. A lot of people begin to feel like they’ll be single forever, but it’s important to keep in mind that your relationship status doesn’t define your worth. Having time alone allows you to love and appreciate yourself and spend time focusing on you. Single or not, that’s something we all should be doing. “Be grateful for your singleness. It has made you strong and independent and unflinching in your unwillingness to settle!” Unknown. BY VICTORIA REYNA-RODRIGUEZ 43_

GETTING OUT OF THE WINTER SLUMP

W

BY RACHEL CESSNA

ith gloomy weather, heavy course loads and the looming threat of midterms, falling into a slump may be easier than usual. A lack of motivation leads to procrastination which can turn into a distressing cycle. If you want to break the circuit, keep reading for some helpful tips.

44_

1 CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT Your bedroom may feel comfy and safe, but it may be detrimental to your overall mood. If you always do homework in bed or on your sofa, you may find yourself tiring of the same old routine and associating your home with a negative workspace. Try finding a different study space on campus, other than the overcrowded library. Hamilton Hall has numerous outlets and comfy chairs, and Hach Hall has large windows that let in the sunlight. “New routines encourage you to find new ways of doing things,” according to newlifeoutlook.com. Let the change in your environment spark some inspiration.

2 TAKE A MEDIA BREAK When you reach a standstill in the middle of an essay, it can be tempting to turn to social media for a few minutes. However, those few minutes may easily turn into an hour. Before you know it, that precious study time disappears along with time for exercising, cooking or hanging out with friends. The next time you have an overwhelming to-do list, try turning off your phone or putting limits on the apps you use. Getting behind on your schedule because your favorite Youtuber just posted an hour-long vlog isn’t always beneficial for staying motivated.

45_

3 FIND A STUDY BUDDY Sometimes you need that extra push to get stuff done. Reach out to a friend and see if they want to meet up once a week for coffee and a study session. Making plans to study with someone else holds you accountable for doing work and can even make studying fun. Bonus points if they’re in the same class as you and can help if you’re struggling with an assignment. Just make sure you don’t choose a friend who you know will be distracting and make you unproductive.

4 CREATE A SCHEDULE AND STICK TO IT If you don’t already keep a schedule of what you need to get done each week, it might be a good time to start. Over the weekend, take a look at what assignments are coming up and which deadlines matter most. Use whatever scheduling system—a planner, Google calendar or notes on your cell phone—that you think works best for you. If you keep track of your due dates and how much time each assignment takes, you may find it easier to complete work on time. Try setting reminders for important projects so you can start working on them a few days or weeks in advance.

46_

Everyone has their own way of handling stress and lack of motivation, but if you find yourself struggling more than usual, try out a few tips and see what works best for you. You may even find a few more activities that help you avoid procrastination. Remember to stay focused on your priorities and the actions that make tasks feel less overwhelming.

KEEPING UP WITH YOUR 2019 RESOLUTIONS

BY KAJSA HALLBERG

T

he start of the new year is almost synonymous with a rise in motivation. Social media floods with the “new year, new me” posts and conversations revolve around new year goals. A sense of optimism is almost tangible in that first week of January. The gyms are busier, the health food aisle is crowded and new savings accounts are opened. However, only a few weeks pass before many of these goals are pushed aside by a busy schedule. According to The New York Times, more than half of resolutions fail. Time management company FranklinCovey found that a third of them are abandoned by the end of January. Many people’s lives pick back up after the holiday season comes to a close, so time becomes an issue. People may also choose an overly difficult resolution or the wrong way to go about achieving their goal. The American Psychological Association said that the best goals are those that motivate for personal reasons instead of societal pressure or pressure from work, friends and family. If someone does not truly want the outcome of their goal, less motivation exists to fulfill it. When looking at how to best keep up with a New Year’s resolution, the most common idea is to break up the goal into smaller steps.

Many of us hold on too tight to the big picture, instead of focusing on smaller milestones that lead to the overall goal. According to The Journal of Consumer Research, the “Small Number” technique keeps people more motivated than the large goal sitting off in the distance. For example, if someone wants to start running 5 miles regularly, saying something like,“I’ve ran one mile, and one more will double that,” is more motivating than “I have four miles left.” This technique can be used to create stepping stones and todo lists towards your goal. Writing out what needs to be done to fulfill a resolution makes it seem more manageable and approachable. Psychologists also recommend putting to-do lists somewhere visible; visual stimulation corresponds with motivation, so having a physical reminder about what is next helps push to finish that step. New Year’s resolutions can be tricky and overwhelming at times. However, breaking a goal down into smaller steps that are manageable and work with your schedule will help keep you motivated. Remember that any goal can be achieved as long as you give yourself plenty of time and plan out your steps. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself victorious at the end of your best year yet.
