We try to be open and honest with you on social media. And in our first ever magazine issue, we want to be even more real about us. Mads said, "During the last year when we’ve been staying home more, we're all learning more about ourselves and our aesthetic. It's not only what you want to look like, but what you love to do --and BE-- when you can’t be out all of the time."

PRETTY LITTLE LEWISES When Riley and Mads Lewis walk into the sun-dappled Beverly Hills backyard for their RAREIFIED photo shoot, Miley Cyrus’ “Midnight Sky'' is thumping, stylists, hair, and makeup are at the ready, and two hand-selected racks of clothes are waiting for the girls’ approval. But the girls who walk in, smiling and greeting everyone so warmly and genuinely, are a far cry from stereotypical Hollywood divas. Everyone is happy to see them.

It’s this authentic connection they have with people that helped them establish the fan base on social media and friendships that caught the attention of the Brat network. Brat came calling with an offer to star in its first digital series—a series that would exceed expectations and become a breakout teen hit. The show would take the girls into teen stardom. Mads and Riley now have their own merchandise lines, unfettered access to the hottest “houses” in Hollywood, and companies sending them endless boxes of products in the hopes of getting a mention on their powerful social media channels.

Brown-eyed Riley is the oldest (born at 10:28 p.m), shortest (5’3 ½), and the “book-smart one.” Green-eyed Dakota (their triplet brother, who is not in the entertainment business) is one minute younger (10:29 p.m.), the tallest (5’9), and the “most artistic one.”

Blue-eyed Mads is the youngest (10:30 p.m), between them in height (5’5), and “the social butterfly.”

It was an accidental career from the very start. The triplets grew up a few hours outside of Los Angeles in Temecula, a small city known for its wineries, rolling hills, and hot air ballooning. Their childhood wasn’t much more than drawing in chalk on their driveway for hours, playing card games, and hitting a tetherball outside. Then in sixth grade, Mads joined her friend in filming a video on the new app Musical.ly for her friend’s account.

Musical.ly was only a few months old at the time, when the first wave of influencers, such as Baby Ariel and Loren Gray, were dominating the app.

So it came as a surprise when they discovered that their video had hit 20,000 views. Mads started her own account for fun, not ever expecting the same response. It was an even bigger shock when Musical.ly picked up on the young trendsetter and began featuring her once or twice a day.

“The first time I was recognized in public was in sixth grade at school,” said Mads. “This girl asked if she could have a picture with me. Then she became a friend!”

Many of Mads’ videos featured Dakota and Riley, letting the triplets’ dynamics started to shine through. Posting became Mads’ “thing."

She posted three videos every day before school started, and some after school if she had time. Riley was not as into it yet, being a more reserved person. But when she established her own account and began posting, albeit more sporadically, Riley grew a fan base as well.

Then Mads was crowned (the equivalent of being verified on Musical.ly). And then Riley was crowned. When Musical.ly began hosting weekly Influencer Days at its headquarters in Santa Monica, the twins were at the top of the invite list. From there, Mads and Riley were invited to events most teens only dream of, or get to see in Netflix Teen RomComs. The pair got invited to movie premieres (including Mads’ favorite, Marvel movies), lavish sweet 16’s of girls they barely knew (but who wanted to get to know them), and store openings and brand launches of products—all desperate for the girls to pass their wares on to their followers.

Then, the brand new network Brat came calling.

Did the girls want to be part of their first digital streaming series, “Chicken Girls”? Nobody had heard of it before, but the cast was made up of well-known social media stars—who also happened to be their friends—and the girls had always wanted to be actors. Joining the show kicked off a whole new phase of their lives.

Mads’ devoted and enormous following continued to grow, and she often addressed them as “babes.”

It was at this time that Riley got a huge bump in fame. After the first episode she jumped from 20k followers to 200k.

One of their closest friends, Indiana Massara (the Australian singer, actor, and Chicken Girl) is almost a part of the family. Since the Lewises live outside of LA but work (and enjoy) the city, at one time or another Mads, Riley, and Dakota have all called Indiana’s place home.

Mads’ boyfriend Jaden also is in the public eye. He was an original member of one of the most wellknown collab houses—the 8,000- square foot mansion in Bel Air known as The Sway House.

Jaden has launched a music career professionally as jxdn. When the Sway House started getting a lot of attention, Mads' and Jaden's relationship was scrutinized by the public, especially during a breakup. Today, she calls him her “sweet soulmate." She also lights up when she mentions something that the two share: Juice, the golden retriever puppy they adopted and named Juice, "like Juice World and juice boxes."

“In this life, there are people who want to use you for your followers, for clout,” Mads said. “I’m grateful to have loyal friends who are with me for true reasons.”

While the girls are certainly enjoying the many perks of their fame, fame can magnify drama. Romances and friendships naturally have some drama attached: breakups are normal parts of life, friendships have their ups and down. However, when your life is so public, it can become challenging to watch people speculate about motives and what’s really happening.

“Sometimes people create drama where it doesn’t exist,” Riley said. “Like when people claim Mads and I aren’t speaking. Of course we’re speaking. She’s my sister! We talk all the time, and we see each other anytime we can.”

“I’m not going to take full credit,” Mads explained. “But we weren’t very religious when we were younger. Then I helped direct my family towards the Lord. My parents, Riley, and I started watching church services twice a week.” Religion has given them a touch base, and Mads says it’s helped her through her anxiety and moments of doubt.

"When I’m questioning something, I ask God to send me a sign. Usually the signs manifest themselves in my dreams. For example, I had a dream about snakes, which means someone in your life is negative and untrustworthy. It turned out to be true and helped guide me with who to trust.”

Mads loves what she’s doing and has additional aspirations in entertainment as well.

“I’ve always wanted to be an actress and I’m excited to act more. My dream is to be in a Marvel movie, and my dream role is Iron Man’s daughter. Another goal is to become a director. I’d love to direct movies, shows, and music videos. Now that I actually like writing, I hope to write a show: comedy, drama, or possibly horror.”

"I also love what I'm doing," Riley agreed. "I love acting, modeling, representing brands…every part of this life." And she has another career interest: Medicine.

"Pediatric surgery interests me because I love working with kids. Kids are resilient, they heal faster, and I'd love to help them. I'm taking pre-med courses."

For now, perhaps her pre-med study would be valuable on a medical show?

“I love working with Riley. It’s amazing to work with someone you know so well.”

Mads summed up. “Plus, she’s fun.”

“When we work together, we push each other to work harder, like a friendly competition. Even then, we’re both supportive and always want the best for each other," Riley added.

Whether it’s behind the camera, in front of it, or entirely offstage, it’s clear the girls are on a fast track to achieving their goals—all while staying the sweet, strong, confident, and appreciative young women they already are.

Riley smiled. “And we’ve always wanted to be on a magazine cover. Now we’re doing that today, for RAREIFIED.”

Don't Be a Chicken...Gurl When Mads and Riley first started on Chicken Girls, they had no idea where the show would take them. They knew it was a "show about dance, friendship, and growing up together." Those themes didn't stay only on the show—they trickled into real life.

In the very beginning, the Brat network was so new, they brought their own clothes.

These days, each has a rack of clothes just for them, a character development meeting before each season, and even some say in the plot lines their characters will experience.

The girls starred in six seasons of the show, and are guests on the current season seven.

Riley was one of the original Chicken Girls friend group, along with Jules LeBlanc, Brooke Butler, and Dylan Conrique. Mads and Indiana Massara were the Dance Captains who were auditioning girls for the dance team. The team only had three open spots, leaving out one of the Chicken Girls.

"The first time I ever filmed Chicken Girls was one of the scariest days of my life. I was excited, but incredibly nervous,” Riley said. "My character is Quinn. She’s very different from me: she’s very girly and loves dresses, hates new things, and wants everything to stay the same. Her friends want to try new things, but she’s trying to hold them back. She hates change.”

"Birdie is different from me, too,” Mads said. “She can be a mean girl, and very sassy. But I liked how she's a badass. Something happened to her which gave her character anxiety and really turned her around. Regardless, her character still keeps that sassy side."

When you’re acting, you can make decisions on how you’re playing a character, what’s her background story, and about the little things that make the character real. Then you go to work and you get to become a whole new person,” said Riley. “We love it.”

They have lots of fun times on set, and share funny stories. Riley and Jules are known for calling out bloopers: “This one’s going to make the blooper reel!” One funny mistake Mads and Riley were known for was forgetting they were mic’d up. The cast would wear microphones, except for lunchtime. Mads and Riley would forget, and go into the green room and have private conversations. Then they’d realize the sound person could hear everything they were saying. Fortunately he was a trusted crew member who really enjoyed working with the two, so their secrets stayed safe!

The Girls talk haters and how to handle them

Even before they became social media stars, Riley and Mads faced haters. After Mads’ first videos started to go viral, both girls faced bullying in their school in Arizona.

“People would start rumors,” Mads said. “We kept getting called down to the principal’s office for some random rumor that was being spread about us that wasn’t even true.”

Or as Riley put it, “I almost felt like being bullied was a normal part of life. Which is terrible. It plays into your insecurities, your anxieties, and fears you’re not worthwhile.”

After their move to LA and their rising numbers of followers, the hate grew. Dealing with hate online—the mean comments, the rumors, the speculation about friends and relationships—is the most difficult part of being in their career. Nobody wants to read, hear, or see ugly comments about themselves.

“All of our past experiences, from middle school through now, definitely made us stronger,” Riley said. “And you have to be strong in the life we’re in. Think of it this way: people have their opinions, and they want to share them with you. That’s pretty much all it is. Remember, it’s not the end of the world.”

"But enough is enough. I’m tired of all the negativity,” said Mads. “I want to crowdsource positivity. Think of it this way: when you're in an audience, or a crowd at a concert, and everyone starts singing together, everyone's voice sounds beautiful together. If we work together to make things right, instead of going against each other, our voices together are beautiful for the world.”

Both girls say that the support they get—and try to give—to their fans more than makes up for the haters.

“I’ll go live and try to help my supporters," Mads said. "I'll play relaxing spa music. I’ll ask them to go look into the mirror and tell themselves five things they love about themselves.

Usually when you look in a mirror, you point out things you don't like about yourself. But I want everyone to ignore the haters and tell themselves they’re beautiful.”

Airpods- I need airpods at all times. My right one falls out every time.

Keys- They have a little “R” keychain with Tinkerbell. I was in the Disneyland gift shop before going into the park (my favorite place!) and thought it was cute!

Battery- I was the last one on set late one night and got locked out of my car because the key battery died! I had to walk to a gas station alone to get a new battery so now I always keep a spare!

Wallet- That’s my brother’s old wallet. But I like using it to store things in!

THE MIDDLE MAN Meet Dakota Lewis

Dakota Lawrence Lewis is always stuck in the middle...of his sisters that is. He was born in the middle and it’s their default when they’re together as well--if they’re sitting on a bench, or taking a photo, Riley is usually to his left, Mads to his right. Though not often, when needed, he’s the p e a c e m a ke r.

Dakota, or Kota to the girls, is “ s w e e t ,” “ a r t i s t i c a l l y t a l e n t e d ,” “ o u t g o i n g ,” a n d “ f u n n y .” H e h a s been part of the girls’ social media lives off and on. He was in one of Mads’ original Musical.lys that went viral, in which Mads came into the room wearing what she thought was an expert makeup look, but he asked her why she looked so f u n n y. D a ko t a a p p e a r e d i n m a n y of his sisters’ videos for years, and joined them at their events from time to time.

Hand sanitizer - It’s a men’s hand sanitizer and smells literally like a dude. It’s from Bath and Body Works.

Mascara, lip gloss, and lipliner - just for touch ups. Honestly I can't say I stick with any one brand.

Fingers- My favorite item in my bag is the little finger hands. You put them on your fingers, cover them with your jacket, and it’s so funny.

Both of them agree laughter is helping them through. Riley watches comedy series that she’s seen many times, like "The Office," and still finds them hilarious.

Mads watches funny YouTubers, and her current favorite is Cody Ko. She also has what she calls a guilty pleasure. "I watch satisfying videos. Is it embarrassing to admit I still like slime videos? I also watch videos where they put something in a cup, and then do a perfect cut. And there are videos where these boys dig in the dirt and make little homes. It’s weird, it’s satisfying, and distracting.”

And during the pandemic, Mads discovered a love for something she always had despised before.

"Writing is my new self-care obsession,” Mads sounded surprised, even just saying it. “It’s weird, because I hated free writing in school. So it’s completely random that’s what I’ve been writing: poetry and free writing. Writing things down has helped me figure out how I’m honestly feeling—which has been difficult for me.”

“We’ve both stayed busy with modeling and work and it’s my senior year of school,” Riley said. “But this pause has given me a chance to have extra downtime I wouldn’t have had before.”

“It’s been a time of discovery for a lot of people, as we figure out our real aesthetic during this time," Mads said. "Who you are as a person, and who you want to be. I believe that’s the good thing about these Covid times. We’re trying to stay positive and take the best care of ourselves we can.”

MADS: I’d trade places with Justin Bieber, because he’s so extremely famous, and I think it would be interesting to spend a day as a boy and just go through his life like that. And I would love to hang out with Haley Bieber. No waitsorry Justin...I’d trade places with Kendall Jenner. She’s so beautiful, and authentic and I admire her modeling career and would like to be like that.

RILEY: Yes, Kendall Jenner. One thing I admire about their family is that they start so many different businesses. I’d love to start a business, that would be sick. Especially with a product I invented. There are so many times I think, life would be so much easier if somebody invented a product. I think it would be cool to invent something that would make life better. I just have to think of one.

Q: What advice do you have for someone following in your footsteps?

MADS: My advice to anybody who wants to follow in my footsteps is to be confident. Don’t let anyone else’s opinion touch your heart too much, because at the end of the day, the only opinion about yourself that you should listen to is your own.

Q: Do you fight over anything?

RILEY: Clothes. But Mads made a new rule: we can share clothing, as long as the person who owns that article of clothing wears it first. If you borrow a piece of clothing, you have to wash it yourself.

Q. When was the last time you cried?

RILEY: Last night.

MADS: Yesterday. It’s that time of the month; you know everything makes you cry.

Q: Is crying a weakness or a strength?

MADS: Depends on why you cry.

Honestly, I can cry over the stupidest thing. People will ask, "why are you crying?" And I don’t even know. I’ve become emotional. I used to have no heart. I never cried.

But now every time I watch a movie, even say the cartoon Grinch version, I’m tearing up.

RILEY: “Pretty Woman.” I just watched it again and that clinched my #1 spot.

MADS: “The Notebook," essentially. I want to live in that movie, though will make anyone’s love story look horrible in comparison.

Q. How do you get over a broken heart?

MADS: You sit there and cry. I don’t think there’s a specific way to get over it. It’s whatever works for you.

Obviously it hurts. I know this is so cliche, but time. And no matter what, love yourself. Learn to love yourself first, RILEY: And reassuring yourself that everything does get better. And that it will get better. It's not IF, it WILL. Q: What’s your favorite date?

RILEY: I like going to the movies… but really anytime it’s just me and the person I love, together by ourselves...that’s a good date. We could be at home doing absolutely nothing.

MADS: I agree with Riley.

Anywhere, as long as you’re with the person you love. I just went to a fancy little restaurant with my boyfriend. It was perfect.

THE DREAM TEAM It was the first-ever RAREIFIED shoot, and the team is creating the looks that will set the tone for the entire magazine line. No pressure, right? Fortunately, we have the right cover girls and dream team to set the tone perfectly. *Chef's kiss!* Mads showed up to set wearing pink tiedyed sweats; Riley in a tie-dye Sublime band shirt and black biker shorts. After their enthusiastic greetings to the team, they got right to work. It was a full day of photos and interviews. One girl sat in the makeup chair with Teresa, while another one was interviewed. Then they switched.

Stylist Lo had two racks of insanely glamorous clothes, pair after pair of Louboutins, and jewels that look headed straight for the Teen Choice Awards. Even for girls used to getting red carpet ready, the looks were impressive.

M LO VONRUMPF Wardrobe Stylist @stylelvr The shoot was all about duality of the two sisters and showcasing the different sides of their personalities.

Glamorous and feminine dresses, but also bold and strong silhouettes. A mixture of delicate gowns and menswear suiting were used. We shot at a beautiful home in Beverly Hills, so I pulled inspo from Blair Waldorf’s character in Gossip Girl. I also referenced Grace Jones and 90’s Madonna.

It was my first time meeting and styling Mads and Riley. They are both such talented, kind, and down to earth artists. I loved styling them because they were open to trying new styles and different silhouettes. Both ladies love fashion which makes it enjoyable for me creatively.

I’m always down to be extra… and they embraced it at this shoot with dramatic dresses and bold looks for styling. It was so fun to play dress up with 2 queens.

Once the pictures started, it seemed there wasn’t a bad shot. Mads and Riley were the ultimate professionals. They didn’t talk during shots (which leads to open-mouth photos), or waste time between shots.

Nothing was too much trouble for the girls.

They may have been tired or cold, but they didn’t complain or hesitate.

For lunch, the girls chose a delivery from Luna Grill. Riley had a flat cut (thinly sliced) chicken plate with basmati rice, house salad, pita bread, and extra tzatziki. Mads had a bistro filet kebab plate with the same sides, except no tomatoes on anything.

Moving inside and outside, formally posing in their suits and dresses, or lounging on chairs in SetActive sweats, the girls were all smiles. Mads sat down at the piano, for impromptu concert for the rest of us (um,

she’s self-taught and really good) while Riley used her (few) free moments to give some love to the dogs on set (they couldn’t get enough of her) and show us pics of her own (and Mads’) puppies.

If the girls were waiting for the shoot to end, they never showed it. Since we truly couldn’t get enough of them, Riley and Mads were gracious enough to come back for more informal pics shot by Drozen to round out our magazine. If only we could have come up with a good reason to have a third day.

Family Matters TIFFANY'S PHOTO ALBUM

Ho, ho, ho & Merry Birthday!

As if being triplets wasn't unusual enough: Their birthday is on Christmas Eve. But no, they DONT get triple the presents. One on their birthdays and then Christmas as usual!

For their birthdays, they always each have their own little circle cakes, with their initial on it. Riley has a confetti cake with sprinkles. Mads has vanilla. Dakota has a carrot cake or chocolate. They blow out the candles in the order they were born: Riley, Dakota, Madison. They go to their Abuelita's to play White Elephant and other Christmas games, but right when it turns 10:28 they stop and say happy birthday to Riley. Riley always points out now she’s technically officially a year older than the others. Then 10:29 it’s Dakota, and 10:30 it’s happy birthday, Mads!

Fun fact about their family: Every person in the family has a birthday on or right next to a holiday. Their birthday is Christmas Eve. Their dad's birthday is a few days after Valentine's and his mom's is two days before Halloween. Their grandfather and aunt have the same birthday, which sometimes falls on Thanksgiving, their Papa's is Fourth of July, and their grandma's birthday is Leap Day.

THE STORY BEHIND JRYB “A butterfly can’t see how beautiful its wings are. Sometimes, neither can we.”

In May, Mads went live, crying and sharing about her mental health in a very raw, emotional video. The video was widely shared and discussed online. But Mads wasn’t apologizing for sharing her emotions. She never wants her supporters to feel they they may be the only one struggling. She’s been open about her anxiety during the pandemic, and her supporters have not only appreciated it, but helped her in return.

“Social media can make people feel really insecure and that’s what I struggle with the most,” she said. “I went through a period when my self-esteem was particularly low. I posted: 'Just Remember You’re Beautiful,'—as much for myself as other people. And my followers responded to it.”

She started using it as a hashtag on every post, and it became her slogan. She abbreviated it to JRYB, and added a butterfly.

"Obviously JRYB means to remember you’re beautiful, but there’s a deeper message," Mads explained.

"When someone tries to bring your confidence down or comment a negative comment, you may not see it in yourself. So I use butterfly wings as my symbol. A butterfly can’t see its own wings, so it can’t see how beautiful it is. JYRB means to remember your beauty, even if you can’t see it yourself. I also move the letters around—ful of beauti—so it’s “full of beauty.” It’s important to be beautiful not only on the outside, but on the inside.”

Mads says she loves spreading positivity with that quote. She even has JYRB on her phone case, as a reminder to herself and others.
