Our visit will begin at the Mobee Slave Relics Museum, where we’ll explore artifacts and stories that paint a vivid picture of that dark chapter in history. We’ll have the opportunity to see the chilling holding cells where enslaved individuals were confined before their harrowing journey across the ocean. JANUARY 10-23, 2026 ITINERARY – 14 Days

DAY 4 – TOUR OF COTONOU, GANVIE, OUIDAH AND “ESPLANADE DES AMAZONES”

GOLDEN TULIP (OR SIMILAR) MEALS: B, L

One of the main attractions near Cotonou is the stilt village of Ganvie, with a population of over 30,000. Ganvie is the most significant water-based settlement in West Africa, often referred to as the Venice of Africa. This is our main item on today’s agenda after breakfast. Because we will be traveling by pirogue (a long, narrow canoe made from a single tree trunk) on open water, we will leave early to arrive at Ganvie before the sun becomes uncomfortable. We may try our hands at fishing under the tutelage of a local fisherman. If we are lucky and catch a sizable amount, then our lunch will be fresh fish grilled locally.

We will take a tour of ancient Ouidah, Benin, formerly known as Dahomey, which translates to "Dan’s stomach" in the local dialect. The Kingdom of Dahomey was an African empire that existed from approximately 1600 until 1894, when the last king, Béhanzin, was defeated by the French, and the country was subsequently annexed by French colonizers. Ouidah is regarded as the center of Voodoo in West Africa. From 1800 to 1900, enslaved Africans from Benin and Togo were shipped from Ouidah, which had the only port in the country until 1908. Most of the enslaved Africans were shipped to Brazil, Haiti, and the Caribbean islands, thus the strong Voodoo presence in these parts of the world. After lunch, we will tour the Ouidah Museum of History and the sacred forest, which consists of figurines representing deities of kings and founders of Ouidah.

Our tour in Ouidah begins at the Sacred Pythons Temple, a unique cultural site that houses revered pythons. These pythons, considered sacred by the locals, are not to be harmed or captured. We'll then follow the stages of the slave route in Ouidah, a sobering yet essential part of our cultural journey.

Afterward, marvel at the iconic statue of the Amazon Woman King, honoring the legendary female warriors of Dahomey. The Amazon statue in Cotonou, Benin, is a 30-meter (98-foot) bronze monument dedicated to the Dahomey Amazons, the all-female military unit of the Kingdom of Dahomey. These warriors, also known as the Agojie, served as the inspiration for the movie "The Woman King." The statue, unveiled in 2022, is a prominent landmark in Cotonou and a symbol of the nation's pre-colonial history, as well as the strength and resilience of its women.

Togoville is historically known as the center of Voodoo in Togo. Many Voodoo practitioners from here were captured, enslaved, and sent to Haiti. The chief’s house, known as Maison Royal, has a room that houses the old King’s throne, which dates back to 1884. In 1884, in this room, Chief King Mlapa III signed a peace treaty, ceding all of what was then known as Togoland to Germany.
