CONNECTING SHEFFIELD

Three functionally different and distinct neighbourhoods of Sheaf valley (Transit node), CIQ (cultural quarters) and Park Hill (city fringe) are connected to the Sheffield City centre through interventions in the public realm. Mixed-use development, pedestrian access, active travel and regeneration of unused areas in the city are the main strategies focused on. Integrating Blue and green Infrastructure using Ring road adds to the existing “Grey to Green” project in Sheffield.

ALTERNATE ZONING : Residential-cum-commercial areas included in the W-E spine (accommodates more students who are the primary users in this area)

CITY FRINGE : Active frontages in Park Hill can provide an anchor for new public spaces that are accessible to the surrounding residences.

Active frontages in Park Hill

1. W-E pedestrian axis through commercial area

2. N-S pedestrian axis

3. Sheaf square becomes central node between CIQ, Sheaf valley and Park Hill

4. Part of Ring road used as Public space - CIQ extends into Ring road

5. Park square bridge and surroundings activated to form a public space

6. Pedestrian, cycle and service vehicle connection between Park Hill and Sheaf Square

REFURBISHMENT OF GOVT. SCHOOLS

SAIDAPET,

Government schools in Saidapet enroll 80% of the student population in one of the densest neighbourhoods in Chennai. However, these schools fall short of the expected standards due to a lack of infrastructure and cohesive design, becoming a setback to the quality of education provided. The intent of the project was to enhance the existing infrastructure through simple yet effective design concepts and increase the value of the schools in the community.

CGHSS

INSUFFICIENT KITCHEN & UNNECESSARY DINING

- Lack of space in existing kitchens

PARKING

- No designated parking area

- Insufficient parking space

ACCESS

- No access to Football ground

- No service entry for Kitchen

- No separate entry for Primary and Secondary school

INTERACTION

- Lack of light and ventilation due to high compound walls

- No visual barrier between girls and boys school

UNUSED SPACES

- Underused toilets in inconvenient areas

- Structurally weak staircase in unsafe area

LACK OF CONNECTIVITY

- Lack of connectivity and circulation between blocks

1.Toilets - Student and staff toilets distributed equally between the blocks

2. Staircase - Connections between existing & new staircases on all levels

3. Kitchen + Dining - Larger area for kitchen, store and utility; dining space incorporated in covered corridor

4. Classrooms & Other spaces - Improving zoning by reallocating classes.

5.Safety Issues - Adherence to Design codes (NBC India) for access, parking, exits and circulation

Vehicular access to the ground is limited. Designated parking areas to reduce vehicles being parked on the ground and to increase student’s safety.

External covered corridor connecting all the blocks in the GF of the campus and becoming spaces for activities and socializing.
