Combat Bootcamp:Layout 1 26/07/2011 00:39 Page 1

Brothers join Forces: Combat Bootcamp aids training for Marines Two brothers from Thetford have been accepted into the British Royal Marines. Adam and James Pyner, gained the required fitness level to pass the stringent recruitment tests after working with local military-fitness specialists Combat Bootcamp. Adam, 23 and James 20, are the third and fourth Combat Bootcamp attendees to have gone on to be accepted into the Armed Forces in the last 12-months, utilising the experience and expertise of Combat Bootcamp’s Armed Forces Personal Training Instructors to boost their fitness levels. The brothers, who currently live in Thetford and attended the local Rosemary Musker school, joined up with the class of 2011 at the Marine Training school in Plymouth realising their lifelong dreams and leaving an immensely proud, but apprehensive mother behind.

“Getting into the Marines is a dream come true and to be joining up at the same time as my brother is the icing on the cake. Combat Bootcamp has helped increase my overall fitness levels and develop my cardio strength. The access to trained Military Personnel has given me a better understanding of what is expected in the Marines and their advice was invaluable in the run-up to the entrance tests” said James.

Combat Bootcamp spokesman Tanya Crabb, who herself has spent time in the Armed Forces said “The guys have put in a lot of time and effort to ensure their fitness levels were up to passing the Marines entrance exam. Being an ex-Army person myself, I know how hard it can be to motivate yourself to go that extra-mile, which is essential given the current intense competition to get into the Forces. Our staff are very keen to help any youngster considering a career in the Armed Forces and we are currently working with local schools and other community groups to assist youngsters in their career choices.”

The Apprentice’ Thetford Academy’ friendly, helpful and polite and there were some really innovative ideas’. The winning group had designed an updated version of the famous ‘teacups’ ride, but with more intense, thrilling features which included a ride in a cookie shaped car being ‘dunked’ inside the teacup via a steep roller coaster drop! Individual awards were also given for people who displayed good presentation skills, team-leading, planning and design. The event was designed to help young people develop key employment skills such as working in new groups, working to deadlines, presenting in front of an audience as well as thinking about new career sectors and exploring entrepreneurial possibilities. Lucy Claydon Y10 said she felt the day was “challenging but good, with lots of ideas from different teams”

Pictured from left to right: Mark Robinson and Alex Epstein

Alex Epstein, an ex-contestant from the hit BBC show ‘The Apprentice’, paid a visit to The Thetford Academy on Thursday 14th July. Alex was visiting, along with professionals from ‘The Altogether Company’, to share his expertise in the world of marketing and advertising and to judge the teams of students final presentations for an ‘Apprentice’ style task they had been set earlier in the day. Alex was ably assisted in his judging duties by District Councillor Mark Robinson.

Jackson Toynbee Y10 said he “got a lot of confidence by presenting his teams work and fielding questions from Alex Epstein about their roller Coaster”

Tax Clinic Saving Tax by Trading Through Your Own Limited Company

As a sole trader, Jack will have the following income tax and national insurance liabilities: £ Income tax 4,505 Class 2 National Insurance 130 Class 4 National Insurance 2,050 6,685 If Jack sets up ‘Jack’s Plumbing & Heating Services Ltd’, the company could pay him a small salary each year (£7,072 would be sufficient to ensure entitlement to certain state benefits without incurring a national insurance charge) and pay any remaining profits out to Jack as an annual dividend. The company would have a corporation tax liability of £4,586 and in this case, Jack would have no personal liability to tax or national insurance. In other words, there is a saving here of £2,099 every year. The following table shows the savings that can be made given different profit levels. It is assumed for the purposes of this table that the company will pay a salary along the lines mentioned above and will pay out all remaining profits as a dividend.

In this article Colin Chamberlain of Lovewell Blake LLP Chartered Accountants discusses the tax savings that can be achieved by trading through your own limited company. I often wonder about how many small, or even relatively large, businesses are out there paying more tax than they need to because they are trading as sole traders or partnerships instead of setting up as limited companies. There seems to be a perception amongst some business proprietors that using a company is for bigger businesses or that the costs involved make it a total non-starter. I can assure you that, in many cases, this is not true and that the tax savings that can result from using a company will often outweigh any increased administration costs.

Jack the Plumber By way of an example, let us assume that Jack has a self-employed business as a plumbing and heating engineer and makes a profit of, say, £30,000 a year.

Further Tax Savings In many cases it may be possible to improve further upon the savings referred to above. Examples of strategies which may be appropriate are: • Bringing in a spouse as a joint shareholder in the company. • Keeping profits in the company rather than distributing them all to the shareholders. • Selling the goodwill of a business to the company. • Utilising R & D tax incentives for those with research and development activities.

Additional Advantages of Using a Limited Company • The liability of the shareholder is usually limited to the amount they have invested in their shares and directors are generally

not held personally liable for the liabilities of the business, unless they allow the company to trade wrongfully or when they ought to have known that the company would not be able to meet its liabilities as they fell due. Some of this limited liability protection may also be lost if lenders require personal guarantees from the directors or shareholders. • The company name will be registered at Companies House and will not be able to be used by any other limited company.

Companies House on public record. • Details of accounts are also held on public record; although for most small companies, abbreviated accounts are filed which show a very limited amount of information. • The annual compliance requirements for a company in terms of administration and accounting do tend to result in costs being higher with a company compared to a sole trader or partnership. Annual accounts have to be prepared in a format dictated by the Companies Act. However, as I stated at the beginning of this article, the tax savings will outweigh the additional administration costs in many cases.

• A company is a separate legal entity in its own right. Therefore the management and ownership of the business can be segregated, providing greater flexibility to amending how the profits are distributed in the future or to future changes of ownership of Conclusion the business. There are undoubtedly many circumstances where using a limited company would lead to substantial Disadvantages savings in tax and other advantages. However it may Of course there are some disadvantages to using a not be appropriate in every case and it pays to work limited company, principal among these are: with a professional adviser. Colin Chamberlain will be very happy to work with you and can be contacted at • Details of directors and shareholders are held at ccx@lovewell-blake.co.uk or on 01842 755032.

Queensway Carnival:Layout 1 23/07/2011 15:22 Page 1

Olympic Themed Carnival On Friday 15th July 2011 Queensway Infant School and Nursery and Queensway Community Junior School joined together to celebrate the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in an Olympic themed carnival. Each class dressed up to represent a different country and joined together to celebrate in a series of events. Queensway Infant School and Nursery paraded around the field in front of children and parents whilst Queensway Community Junior School took part in a procession around the streets of Thetford. In the afternoon, children and parents joined together for a picnic lunch on the school field and enjoyed a wide range of games and traditional fete stalls that had been organised collectively by both schools. Activities included a raffle, face painting and remote control cars. A big thank you, from both schools, goes to the parents and local community who supported this event so well.

Children's eyes are precious- don't forget to bring your children for a free eye check during the school holidays.

Welcolm to Thetford:Layout 1 23/07/2011 15:26 Page 1

Welcome to Thetford: Students prepare for Academy’s new intake 24 students from Thetford Academy took to the streets of Thetford recently in order to make a ‘documentary’ style film, focusing on the diverse range of cultures that live together in the town.

Students conducted interviews with a real cross section of Thetfordians, including residents at Ford Place Care home, students at Norwich Road Primary School, people from the London overspill generation and people from different countries recently arrived in Thetford and looking for work. Across all of the interviews, a common theme emerged: fitting in is scary at first, but always gets better if you give it a go. Cathy Spillane, Principal of Thetford Academy said “The opportunity to meet and talk to so many different members of the community was inspiring for the students and for the people themselves. To see a fifteen year old interview an eighty year old and discover their common ground is a wonderful reminder of the fact that we’ve all been through the same feelings coming up to Secondary school for the first time. We are looking forward to sharing the video with the new Year 7s”.

The film, which was created entirely by students themselves, asked people from all backgrounds and cultures to focus on the question ‘What does it mean to fit in?’, and will be shown as part of a welcome package to the new Year 7 intake next year.

A GREAT NIGHT OUT With the biggest dance club in the world!

Miss Laura Ballantyne, the teacher who developed the project in collaboration with the Norwich based charity NEAD, said “The Academy is a big, diverse community, that can be intimidating when you’re coming into it for the first time. But we and the students know that once you settle in, and realise how much everyone has in common, it’s a fantastic place to learn and work, and a bonus to have people from such a wide range of backgrounds in one place”.

An exciting, funky & stylish partner dance It’s totally addictive!! We make learning to dance fun, easy & relaxed no complicated footwork Meet people, have fun & keep fit all whilst learning to dance No need to book, just turn up with or without a partner!

WEDNESDAY’S 7:15pm-10:30pm at THE CARNEGIE ROOM, Cage Lane, Thetford, IP24 2DS £7 (conc £6) SPECIAL OFFER – New members on your 1st night, kick-start your dancing with your first 6 classes for just £21

TA6 Apprenticeship awards!:Layout 1 25/07/2011 09:25 Page 1

Apprenticeship Awards!

It means recording onto a laptop computer at its Thetford Grammar School headquarters and fast copying to memory sticks. All listeners have been equipped with a Boom Box, a small portable player for the sticks.

In June The Thetford Academy Sixth Form celebrated the success of it's Apprenticeship students.

The changeover has been masterminded by technical officer John Morgan, to whom chairman John Kitson paid special tribute.

TA6 students were competing against others from across the county and won several awards. Awards were presented by Rob and Chrissie from Heart FM and Lisa Christensen; Director of Children Services Norfolk.

“It has been a major and costly change to our production systems, updating and simplifying our methods. For the listeners it means a better quality, long lasting product, flexible in length instead of a time restricted tape”. Link-Up is based on news culled from the Eastern Daily Press and its associated weeklies. The organisation also produces recorded versions of the council magazine Breckland Voice and newsletters for the Long Stratton based Saffron Housing Trust. There remains a constant need for volunteers and currently Link-Up is searching for a promotions manager to keep the charity in the public eye. Another Talking Newspaper goes Digital.

Fault Code Reader • Tyres & Exhausts (Hackney Carriages and Private Hire Tested)

Link-Up, the talking newspaper for people in Breckland with sight problems, has changed over to digital production from July. It was formed back in 1984 and its 702nd issue goes out to its listeners in the familiar yellow padded plastic wallet with its reversible address label – but instead of an analogue cassette tape, the recording will be on a memory stick. So the talking newspaper which has listeners throughout Breckland and areas of south and west Norfolk and west Suffolk, as well as much further afield – in Yorkshire, Sussex and Liverpool – becomes the latest of the clutch of TNs in Norfolk to embrace new technology.

Now that Summer is here we start revealing parts of our body that have been covered up for ages and then have a mild panic about excess body hair. Fear not, it can be removed permanently by intense pulse light (IPL). No longer need we worry about trying to camouflage with make up facial hair or constantly having to shave under arms, bikini lines and legs. Also suitable for men with excess hair on their backs or chests or if they suffer with problems of ingrown hairs along the collar line. IPL is a non invasive treatment which has the advantage of treating large areas relatively quickly.

Another advantage is the hairs need to be quite short as the energy needs to be absorbed into the root and not the length of hair. This heats up the root and kills the hair. Because the hair needs to be in the right stage of growth several treatments are needed but the treatment is every 4-6 weeks depending where it is on the body. It’s important to wear a sunscreen (minimum 25 SPF) between treatments to protect the skin from having too much active pigment.

Electrolysis is another method of permanent hair removal, using a fine needle inserted into the hair follicle. Heat is applied and cauterises the root, the hair is then removed with tweezers. Many treatments are required as it is a much slower treatment. It can take years!

2012 Programme Competition for Thetford Open Gardens Thank you again to all who took part in this year’s event. You may have noticed that every year our programme cover is different. The first year showed the Thetford signpost, the second year a postcard from the Ancient House Museum, the third year was Sue Pilgrim’s watercolour, the fourth year was Julie Dean’s photograph, this our fifth year was a graphic design by Joey Dean. So what about next year? We would like someone 11 years old or under to send us a garden related picture. It could be made with paint, felt tips, crayons or even collage. You can add the words Thetford Open Gardens, you don’t have to, they can be added later by the printer.

So tell all your friends and use your summer holiday to make us a fabulous programme cover for next year’s Thetford Open Gardens.

Thetford (Breckland)Lioness Club The Thetford lionesses recently held a handover evening with Katie continuing as President; Lesley as Secretary and Ann as Treasurer. Monies raised to be donated to Help for Heroes, Young carers; and water aid. A big thank you to everyone who supported us during the past year

Your entries [as many as you like] should be sent to 38 Nunsgate, Thetford, IP24 3EL, by Sept 10th 2011. They will then be judged and the winner notified by the end of September. The prize? Yes of course there will be a small prize for the winner, but the main prize will be seeing your work on the front of 500 copies of Thetford Open Gardens programmes next June and before then on the posters all around the town.

Byzantium:Layout 1 23/07/2011 13:40 Page 1

Byzantium On the 29th and 30th of June, Year 13 Performing Arts students at The Thetford Academy performed their final play as part of 6th Sense Theatre Company. ‘Byzantium’ written by British screenwriter Moira Buffini was chosen by the group to be performed at the start of their BTEC course and after two years of edgy, contemporary plays such as ‘Bang Bang, You’re Dead’, ‘Dark North’ and ‘Too Much Punch For Judy’, the group finally began work on the feature length piece. The play focuses on the story of Eleanor, a sixteen year old girl who confesses to her drama class that she and her sister Claire are 200 year old vampires. The audience is taken on a journey spanning two centuries worth of dark and twisted tales, exploring the events that took place across 19th century Europe culminating in Ella’s shocking confession. With her classmates and sister rejecting her ‘fantastical’ story, Ella finds comfort in Frank; a lonely previously home schooled student who is the only one who believes her vampire ‘delusion’, even when faced with the fact that he can never share her with the one thing she needs to survive; human blood. As her story unravels, the evidence to support Eleanor’s beliefs leaves the audience to make up their own mind about whether or not to believe Eleanor’s unprovable, impossible, fantastical tale… The 90 minute performance received very positive reviews leaving the audience of family, friends, staff, students and the local community talking about it long after the curtain call. Karl Johnson, a Thetford resident with no connection to The Thetford Academy said, “I had a great time watching Mrs Taylor-Kahr’s students perform tonight. What a brilliant bunch of kids. Very professional, polished and with such confidence and presence- it makes me wish I had taken Drama at school”. Many of the students involved have taken up places to study creative subjects at university in September, such as Theatre Studies, Film, Creative Writing, Musical Theatre and Dance. Linda Taylor-Kahr, Director of the performance, said ‘It has been a privilege working with these gifted and enthusiastic students. I will miss them all tremendously but wish them every success with their future studies and careers. I have no doubt that they will continue to shine, wherever they end up.’

Launch of Patient Decision Aid in South Norfolk in 14 Libraries and 17 South Norfolk Practices The library service and South Norfolk Healthcare CIC were pleased to make Patient Decision Aid (PDA) booklets and DVDs available in 16 South Norfolk GP Practices and 14 Norfolk Libraries from July the 12th. Patient Decision Aids are tools designed to help individuals make decisions about their treatments and medical tests. The booklets are workbooks devised to create a personal record of the journey a patient will take in his or her choice and can be made available to his or her doctor/consultant to help make a shared decision. The DVD included in the PDA complements the booklet with more information and interviews of patients talking about their experiences. Initially South Norfolk Healthcare will be providing the libraries two Patients Decision Aids: one on Localised

All libraries have computers with free secure internet access to the NHS Direct online tools as well as a freephone to NHS Direct for any queries on the subject. Help on how to use a computer and assistive technology are also freely available at each library. Initially the Patient Decision Aids will be distributed to 13 local libraries but library members may request them at any Norfolk library and if they are not currently in stock they will be transferred to the requested library free of charge. Retired get ‘First Click’ in IT skills training Members of the University of the Third Age in Dereham have been given a beginners computer class designed to get more elderly people online. The First Click initiative, which takes place on Breckland Council’s One Stop Bus, is designed to get the over-65s online by showing them how to use a computer, from the basic desktop icons, through to confidently surfing the internet. Cllr Lynda Turner, Executive member for Localism, Community and Environmental Awareness joined local residents for a sneak peek as to what the course offers. She said; “Computers and the internet can be daunting at the best of times, we’re running this course to encourage people who might not have used a computer before to come along and be shown how. “The world of information technology and computing is full of wonderful opportunities and we want to open that world to as many people as possible. The courses are clear, easy to follow and they do begin at the very beginning.” The One Stop Bus service provides laptops, plasma screens and internet connection. www.winnersbingo.co.uk

The One Stop Bus training has been so successful that the team have delivered over 200 courses to the rural community since January this year. Adam Jackson, one of the trainers on board the bus said; “Delivering this class in addition to the training we already deliver out in the villages has been really rewarding. Our role as ‘Service Connectors’ sees us delivering various community based projects and in delivering this class we have been able to truly connect residents to services that are increasingly available online”. If you are interested in training courses or just want to find out what the bus offers you can get in touch with the ‘One Stop Bus’ team, either by calling 07778 476 824 or by emailing bus@breckland.gov.uk. Further information about the community based work the team deliver is available at: www.breckland.gov.uk/onestopbus

Laburnum Grove:Layout 1 26/07/2011 23:15 Page 1

Farewell Pearl - Wishing you Good Luck for the Future It was something of a bitter-sweet occasion when tenants, clients, relatives and staff got together to wish farewell to Manager Pearl Mumford. Pearl has held the post for the last 8 years during which time it has gone from strength-to-strength until it is now one of the best housing-with-care schemes in the country.

After another glowing tribute on behalf of the staff from chef Alan Deri, it was Pearl’s turn to thank all of the staff for their dedication and commitment to the Scheme. She went on to say that although she had lived and breathed Laburnum Grove for many years, it was now time to move on but she was torn as she would miss the tenants, relatives, day centre clients and the staff team.

Thetford Mayor, Councillor Derek Mortimer gave a speech in praise of all Pearl’s hard work in bringing Laburnum Grove up to the highest standard recognised by the Care Quality Commission.

Her achievements were applauded by Thetford Mayor, Councillor Derek Mortimer, who thanked her on behalf of the Town Council and all the people of Thetford for her efforts in providing care of the highest quality to the local population. The hugs she received from Deputy Mayor, Councillor Pauline Quadling, were almost hard enough to finish off the event before it had even started!

A poem written by tenant Joan Scott in which she lamented Pearl’s departure from Laburnum Grove was read out by staff member Margaret Chamberlain. Everyone said she would be sorely missed.

I’d walk a million miles for one of those smiles.

After a little dancing and a sing-along to the entertainment, the assembled throng were treated to a buffet and everyone enjoyed listening to the music.

The staff of Laburnum Grove presented Pearl Mumford with many farewell presents to mark her departure after managing the Housing with Care Scheme and Day Centre for the past 8 years

The carnival was organised by Bishop’s C of E Primary School in celebration of the end of the school year and the beginning of the summer holidays. Teachers, parents and the children wore fancy dress of different themes and paraded around the streets surrounding the school, lead by a samba band. Onlookers stood outside their houses on the estate to watch the colourful sight. The parade was followed by a variety of indoor performances which included a Glee Club, Street Dance, and both Ukulele and Xylophone performances.

Help for Heroes On the first weekend of June I embarked on a personal and physical challenge to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity. I joined a team of eight members to raise funds by carrying a stretcher, complete with a mannequin dressed in full army uniform, to the summit of Mount Snowdon. Our team consisted of local men and women with connections to the 1st Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment and we wanted to replicate the famous image on the Help for Heroes logo and honour five Royal Anglian soldiers killed during a six month tour of duty from October 2009 to April 2010. The 1st Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment, known as the ‘Vikings’, recruits from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire and deployed to Afghanistan at that time for a tour a duty known as Op Herrick 11. Following this operation our team of eight members, most of which have had family members killed or injured during Op Herrick 11, felt inspired to raise money for Help for Heroes under the name Team Herrick 11.

duties at Check Point Paraang in southern Nad e-Ali, Helmand province. Also in the team was David Driver, from Barnsley, whose twin brother: Captain Martin Driver died at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine at Selly Oak Hospital as a result of wounds sustained in an explosion which occurred in the Musa Qal'ah district of Helmand province on the morning of 21 February 2010. Team member Nigel Parsley from Ipswich took part for his son Matt, who was in the same section as James Grigg and Scott Hardy and was also caught in the same blast but was miraculously uninjured. Martin Greenland from Sheringham, took part for his son Dan who was based at Paraang in Nad-e Ali during Op Herrick 11 and was close friends with Robert Hayes and Adam Drane who were both killed in that area. Dan had a close call himself when a bullet hit his gun and grazed his arm, luckily only leaving a small scar. Finally, Royal Anglian Soldier Bill Shand and I completed the team and were pleased to be joined by Alison Burgess, who founded the Viking Family Support Group and had two sons serving in Afghanistan during Op Herrick 11.

Our team consisted of team leader Paul Allen from Barnham, whose son Mark lost both of his legs after being caught in an IED blast whilst on patrol in Musa Qal’ah, Mike Grigg from Stradbroke, whose son James Grigg was killed alongside Lcpl Scott Hardy on 16th March 2010 by an IED also in Musa Qal’ah, and Des Drane from Stannifield Suffolk, whose son Adam was killed in Afghanistan on Monday 7 December 2009. It was my first visit to Wales, and I was delighted to be greeted by glorious sunshine and beautiful steep landscapes, although I was not so appreciative of these once we had begun our climb! We decided to follow the Llamberis path which is by far the longest. To the top and back is around 11 miles and the route involves climbing up to 3000ft. It took our team just over 3 hours to reach the top, stretcher and all, and the amount of support we received was overwhelming. We collected over £150 of donations during the climb from the generous public. We have now raised over £4500 and would like to thank all those that have supported us and kindly donated through our donations page: www.bmycharity.com/v2/herrick11. Hopefully we will be able to continue to raise a huge amount for Help for Heroes. Website: www.teamherrick11.co.uk Kate Snowdon

34 Cats August:Layout 1 26/07/2011 23:10 Page 1

Breckland Cats Protection Feline Care facing Closure We have been lucky to recruit some new phone answerers who are coping very well. I think until you do the job you don’t realise the scale of the problem with strays, ferals and people wanting to hand in cats. Oh, the joy when we receive a call from someone wanting to offer a home to a cat because we get far more of the other sort of calls.

A local cat rescue centre is facing closure if funds cannot be found to keep it open.

We have had 3 cats left behind in a rented building, one of our fosterers has singlehandedly collected and had neutered 25 cats from one colony, we have collected single kittens found in gardens, only about 7 weeks old but friendly so must have come from a home.

Staff and volunteers at the Norfolk sanctuary, home to around 140 cats at any time, have been given the chance to register Feline Care as a charity and take on the 3½ acre site but need to raise £70,000 by the end of September.

There is a little mum with a red collar with at least 3 kittens living under a shed and we just don’t have anywhere to put her. Have they been abandoned, purposely dumped, who knows but very rarely do the lost cats match up with the found so no one is bothering to ring to see if we have them.

Centre manager, Molly Farrar, said “We are a small group of caring individuals who work our hardest to help as many cats as we can, with limited funds but plenty of enthusiasm.

We do meet some lovely people who support us at our sales and bring us bric a brac, books and cat food, without whom we would not be able to help so many cats, so thank you to them. Thanks, also, to Marje for putting in our articles each month.

Feline Care on Roudham Road, East Harling, has been under it's current management for the last five years but charity Trustees, based in Sussex say they can no longer cope with the responsibility of the Norfolk branch.

This news has hit us hard as we are already working flat out but we know there must be enough people out there who can help save us.” An appeal is being made for donations towards the site purchase and cheques can be made payable to Feline Care, Roudham Road, East Harling NR16 2QN. You can also donate online via the centre's website www.felinecare.org.uk Contact: Feline Care (office) 01953 718529

Come join the Party!!

This little bundle is just a few of the kittens we have looking for homes. Vaccinated, wormed, flead, micro chipped and with vouchers towards the cost of neutering. Also they or their mum have been blood tested. We have picked up a few feral/stray adults who have tested positive for FIV and unfortunately had to be euthanased. They had fathered several litters of kittens which could potentially be infected so please beware if offered kittens for free. If you can help please ring us on 01842 810018

MUSEUM OF THETFORD LIFE

Another of our young volunteers, Luke has been an enthusiastic supporter of youth involvement with the museum. He arranged a visit to his sixth form to highlight the museum’s learning and volunteering programme for young people. As a result of his efforts, three more young people become volunteers. “Thanks for the trip to London yesterday, was a brilliant day and I think we done the East of England proud!”

Ancient House Museum

Young Volunteers Scoop Marsh Award The Young Thetford Treasure volunteers from Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life have become the winners of the ‘Volunteers for Museum Learning’ East of England Region. At the Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life, we have a small group of dedicated young volunteers who work with us to deliver high quality learning. Our young volunteers support our learning programme by conducting background research, preparing resources for craft activities and maintaining our handling collections. They also work in partnership with our older ‘Thetford Treasure’ volunteers during our House Alive events; bringing the museum alive during a different era from Romans to 1960s, using costumed interpretation, object handling and delivering craft activities.

Kessie receiving her V award

Many of our volunteers are working towards their V Inspire awards with us. Several have already achieved the V Impact award for 150 hours of volunteer work. The young volunteers at Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life have helped us to attract a teenage audience to our events. It has also broadened the range of activities we can offer. Many visitors, particularly older visitors have enjoyed interacting with young people in such a positive way within the museum environment.

One of our volunteers, Alex has become a confident cook using our Victorian open range during these events. Using his love of food and cooking, Alex has developed strong historical food skills and produced a range of dishes from different eras. His most notable successes have been Edwardian sprout sausages and helping to create a traditional Elizabethan plum pudding.

Speaking of the volunteer’s success, Melissa Hawker, learning Officer said “I am very proud of our young volunteer’s achievements. Their work at the Ancient House enables us to offer a great range of activities and events to the local community. I am thrilled that their contribution has been recognised with this award. They deserve it!” The British Museum and the Marsh Christian Trust have been working in partnership for the third year for the ‘Volunteers for Museum Learning’ award which recognises the hugely valuable contribution that volunteers make in helping museums to engage with their visitors.

Marsh award winners East of England, with Dame Liz Forgan DBE and Mr. Brian Marsh

The ‘Volunteers for Museum Learning’ award forms part of a programme of 41 awards presented by the Marsh Christian Trust in the fields of science, ecology, conservation, heritage, literature and volunteering. Each one of these awards recognises individuals and organisations who devote their lives to improving the world today and the world in the future. The aim of the ‘Volunteers for Museum Learning’ award is to recognise those volunteers who work directly with museum visitors in any capacity. Andrew Burnett, Deputy Director of the British Museum said “The Marsh Awards recognise the vital work that volunteers do in museums across the country. Museums large and small are reliant on the contribution volunteers make to ensure the smooth and successful running of their organisation. We are very grateful to the Marsh Christian Trust for recognising this work and inaugurating this award”. Congratulations to all our young volunteers for their richly deserved success!

North Site Prom:Layout 1 25/07/2011 14:33 Page 1

Thetford Academy North Site Prom

On a lovely, warm evening in June, Lynford Hall in Mundford played host to a cavalcade of vintage and veteran cars, luxury limousines, sports cars and coaches transporting our year 11 students to their Prom. Parents , families and staff watched in awe as handsome young men dressed in suits and kilts emerged from these vehicles accompanied by beautiful and elegant young ladies adorned in jewels and gowns of all colours of the rainbow. Wow! I think all those waiting were stunned. Were these young people really the same students we had worked with until just a couple of weeks earlier? These young people looked amazing and carried themselves with confidence and aplomb. The evening had been arranged by Year 11 student, Hannah Goddard. She had organised everything from beginning to end and her attention to detail was wonderful. We all commented particularly on her table decorations. Students enjoyed a buffet throughout the evening and were able to wander around the beautiful grounds leading to the lake or stay in the ballroom and dance. Our carnival King and Queen were crowned , following considerable voting and deliberation. Our Carnival Queen was Ana Pinto, dressed in an incredibly sophisticated butterfly creation and our very suave Carnival King was Marcus Stowe. The 20 staff who attended watched with pride as our students left the Prom as young adults entering a new chapter of their lives. We all agreed the evening had been a resounding success and would like to thank Hannah for all her hard work ensuring the evening went so well. Good luck to all our students.

Thetford Academy South Site Prom Red carpet, TV stars, girls in gowns, boys in tails, Limo’s, Lorries, quad bikes, dune buggies, Cinderella carriages, flashing cameras. What was happening?……the Thetford Academy south site prom at the Bell Hotel on Friday 24th June. The streets were packed full of proud parents, friends and families all trying to catch a glimpse of the students as they arrived for their special prom night.

Surprise guest of honour was Joe Swash, from Eastenders and I’m a Celebrity, who arrived with cousin Albert Roberts and was quickly surrounded by a crowd of fans keen to get a photo or an autograph. The prom was organised by both students and Mrs Lorraine Thirtle who felt, “the atmosphere was terrific, with a real sense of occasion at the end of their school year. The girls and boys had made a tremendous effort this year to come colour coordinated and had added all lots of little extras, like tiaras, button hole flowers, cufflinks and shoes.” And on the hair styles Mrs Thirtle said , “Thetford must have some of the best hairdressers in the country, as both the girls and boys had really superb new styles which made them all look so grown up”

Gardening with with Old Grandad Hi boys and girls, Firstly I must apologise to Conor Higgins for spelling his name wrong Sorry Conor.

but do not remove the roots. When beans grow the roots form nodules of Nitrogen, the perfect food for a nice green cabbage. Nature is a wonderful thing one spent plant feeding another just like compost. Well that's all for now, I suppose you are all soon on your summer holidays well have a great time. Be good and stay safe old Grandad .

At this time of the year we can enjoy the rewards of our hard work by eating our fresh vegetables that we have grown. As you can see Abby is harvesting her crops, this is just what we have been waiting for nice fresh, straight from the garden, food. Nothing feels better for a gardener than to taste fresh vegetables, new potatoes, salads, peas and beans, and there is still work to do. We can still set seeds, lettuce and radishes can still be planted, any salad leaves such as rocket can all be grown in pots and once ready cut the leaves off and add to salads.

Abby has now taken all her broad beans off so now we can plant something else. A cabbage, why a cabbage, thats because of what was in there to begin with, beans. We cut the tops off level with the soil in the pot

Chris Packham will join Breckland judging panel Organisers have snapped up the services of TV countryside celebrity Chris Packham to help judge the 2011 Breckland Photography Competition – an annual contest that celebrates rural life in the district. Well known and loved as a presenter on countless television shows including the hugely popular Springwatch and Countryfile programmes, Chris Packham is equally well known for his passion for wildlife, conservation and the countryside.

Localism, Community and Environmental Awareness said: “I am delighted that Chris has agreed to help judge the contest this year. The standard of photographs we get in from residents is always high, so I am sure he is going to be impressed. We have already begun to receive entries and I am sure that having such an inspirational judge will get people even more fired up about the competition. The Annual Breckland Photography Competition is open to all Breckland residents and photographs must be taken within the district. All images must be submitted in digital format by the closing deadline of 5pm on Friday 16th September 2011. After the competition winners have been announced, an exhibition of their photographs will tour the five Breckland towns during October and November. This year the focus is on celebrating rural life through four competition categories –

As a professional wildlife photographer who also trained as a wildlife film cameraman he is well qualified to judge the Breckland contest. Chris Packham said: “The real challenge will be to capture the spirit of the district. Breckland is a beautiful and diverse part of Norfolk but to capture its essence in a picture requires an original and creative eye backed up by a good understanding of photographic techniques.

The 2011 Breckland Photography Competition opened for entries in May and Mr Packham will assess the entries after the competition closes on 16th September to decide who will be named winners this year.

Fire Station’s Charity Fun Day:Layout 1 23/07/2011 11:38 Page 1

Thetford Fire Station’s Charity Fun Day

In an unsual British heat wave, the sun shone and the temperature soared for the Thetford Fire Station’s Charity Fun Day. Hosted at the recreation ground at Breckland Leisure Centre to raise money for the Firefighters charity, Help for Heroes and East Anglian Air Ambulance, the event saw the grounds of the sports centre transformed into a lively hub of activity with sports, entertainment and education on offer. Some of the more popular activities for children included bungee trampolines, zoorbing on water and lazer combat. There was a chance for children to partake in cricket matches, obstacle courses and school sports daystyle races. For the adults there was 5-a-side football, archery and spectators could watch the fire service 5km

race, which was completed in full uniform! Other activities worth mentioning include a tug of war match, inflatable slide for kids, an egg throwing contest and a number of fairground attractions. Children could also have their face painted and pose with a rifle and uniform provided by the RAF. There were also a number of vehicles from the ambulance service, armed forces, and fire service from both the past and present on display. Children were able to look round and sit in these vehicles and some even sounded their sirens; much to the delight of the youngsters. In total a sum of £2,100 was raised, which is a credit to the hard work that was put in. Kate Snowdon

Fixed penalty notices issued for littering offences

Too Busy for Housework and Ironing? DoYou Need a Cleaner that is?

Four members of the public have been issued with fixed penalty notices and three others warned in a Breckland Council initiative to crack down on litter. Littering was voted a number one priority by the Safer Thetford Action Group earlier this year, and Breckland subsequently worked with the Police and the Thetford Litter Campaign on an initiative to reduce littering in the town. The Minstergate area, which is mostly in private ownership, was identified as an area of particular concern to the public. Since April this year, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), Police Officers and Local Authority Enforcement Officers have been targeting the Minstergate area and stopping anyone spotted dropping litter. Those stopped were reported to Breckland’s Clean Neighbourhood Enforcement Officer for the offence of littering and fixed penalty notices and warnings were issued. Lynda Turner, Breckland Council Executive Member for Localism, Community and Environmental Services said: “Littering is not just anti-social, it is an offence. The initiative has clearly struck a chord with the general public as a number of people have approached the officers patrolling the area to express their backing for the project”. The fixed penalty notice initiative builds on work undertaken by the Council and partners last November when the Pride in Breckland Team of volunteers worked with members of the public to carry out a major cleanup of the Minstergate area. To support this, Breckland’s Environmental Services Team delivered an Education Day explaining the environmental consequences of littering and Thetford Town Council funded and installed a new litter bin in the area. Further operations are planned for August including one to target litter from fast food takeaways. For further information about the project, contact Breckland Council Environmental Services on 01362 656878. If you want to find out more about Pride in Breckland projects, contact the Pride Co-ordinator on 01362 656870.

St John Ambulance:Layout 1 26/07/2011 00:11 Page 1

St John Ambulance On June 20th the Cadets from Thetford St John were invited to Norwich Magistrates Court to take part in a Mock Trial.

Well done to all who took part but especially to Laura Clarke who played the law breaking teenager with such conviction!

With each of them playing a part some very valuable lessons were learned on that evening. The prosecution found that convincing a "real" jury that their client was guilty was not as easy as they had first thought it would be. Also the defence lawers found just how hard it was to plead someones innocence when they did not know for certain if they were being totally truthful! After a very fraught trial the defendant was indeed found guilty of the offence and a trip to the cells was then called for!

We would also like to say a MASSIVE thank you to all of Sainsburys customers who supported us with our collection in store on the 18th and 19th of June. We raised over £700 which we are hoping to put towards a residential for the Badgers and Cadets to become more independent and to promote the team work which is so vital in the work they do within St John. We are also still collecting plastic bottles and drinks cans. We have now raised over £450 towards our radios and hope to reach the magic £500 within the next month! Please still keep collecting for us and we will let you know of our next target in the next issue of About Thetford. Thank you so much to all who have supported us so far. It is certainly a great relief to all the leaders now to know that your children are a lot safer when out on public duties now they have the use of the radios. Finally a big welcome to all of our new members who have decided to join us in the last month or so. Both our cadet and adult groups are going from strength to strength. If anyone else is interested in joining us and you are ages 5+ please contact us on 07940029510 or email shaz_eng_uk@hotmail.com. There really is something for everyone from fund raising to first aid from working with children to the elderly.

49 Dolphin Mini Gala's:Layout 1 26/07/2011 01:23 Page 1

Thetford Dolphins Mini Galas 2011 Thetford Dolphins held their annual series of mini galas at the town’s Waterworld pool during February, April and June. They’re a chance for the whole club to come together, enjoy competing against each other in colour coordinated teams and for families/friends to come along and cheer them on. There are even points awarded for the best supported team with mascots and banners positively encouraged!

swimmers took part in 25m Fly and 50m Free. The final team places for 2011 are: 1st The Snowmen 151 points, 2nd Lean Mean Custard Machine 150 points, 3rd Black Adders 141 points, 4th Red Hot Chilli Peppers 126 points, 5th The Waves 121 points and 6th Green Giants 112 points. It was a close call between The Snowmen and Lean Mean Custard Machine but the Snowmen just took the lead.

For those who swim only at Thetford Academy’s South Site, it is a chance to meet and swim with members at Waterworld. The six teams were first tasked with each choosing a team name. Their imagination was fired and the six teams were: The Snowmen, The Lean Mean Custard machine, the Blackadders, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Waves and the Green Giants.

There are two Top Boy and two Top Girl swimmers this year with all 4 swimmers gaining 15 points. They are Alexander Clark-Massey, Travis Beaton, Izzie Free and Issey O’Brian-Miller. A superb achievement by them all.

After the first round, the Snowmen team lead the points table with 66, closely followed by the Blackadders with 60, The Waves 55, the Green Giants and Lean Mean Custard Machine tying on 53 and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers with 39. Individually, the top 3 swimmers after this first round were: Sam Worsnop, Dan Collins and Lily Donaldson. There were 31 New Times recorded which reflects participation in events which some swimmers had not attempted before. There were also 69 PBs.

As in previous years we also asked Terry, Thetford Dolphins coach, to score each team for the effort that they put into supporting their team over the three galas. The final positions for Best Supporting Team are: 1st Green Giants 26 points, 2nd The Snowmen 25 points and in joint 3rd place with 24 points The Waves, Lean Mean Custard Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers & Black Adders. It was a really close competition this year with every team showing support for their team members as well as bringing along some excellent decorations and mascots. Well done!

Round 2 ended with the blackadders pulling a one point lead on the snowmen with 109, the custard machine with 103, the waves with 87, red hot chilli peppers with 83, and the green giants with 79. Top swimmer after round 2 was Issey O-Brien Miller with 11 points and 11 other swimmers held joint 2nd with 10 points. There were also nearly 40 new and PB times.

51 Thetford Dolphins:Layout 1 26/07/2011 01:21 Page 1

Thetford Dolphins Suffolk Summer League 2011 Thetford Dolphins 9-13 year olds entered the annual Suffolk Summer League competition. They competed in the three rounds and strove for victory, becoming winners of the 'B' Final trophy.

under 50m breast) and a new time of 1.18.55 in the 13 and under 100m free. This event also saw him swim up two age groups and gain a 3rd place. Thetford came away from this round in 2nd place with 170 points, behind Sudbury with 244, deben with 158, Beccles B with 141, Halstead A 117 and Halstead B with 25. This put Thetford in the 'B' Final, which was held on their home turf, so to speak, at Thetford's Waterworld pool early in July.

Round 1 was at Bungay back in April and no doubt the swimmer of the day was Aimee Copp who broke Thetford Dolphin's 21 year record for the girls 11 and under 50m breast event with a time of 42.51, which also saw her win the event.

Again Thetford excelled in their placings, gaining 1st to 3rd place in almost all the races and coming 1st in all the relay events bar one. Abbie Farrow showed an especially good performance - with 3 PBs in the 50m 11 and under category for breast (45.13 & 3rd place), free (36.21 & 2nd place) and fly (45.98 and 2nd place).

There were also fantastic times for many of the club's swimmers; Luke Collins achieved pbs in the 100m IM for 13 and under, pulling first place in 1.17.46 and also the 100m fly with a first place and a time of 1.21.01. Annie Clarke's hard work saw her attain 2 PBs - one in 13 and under 100m free in which she came 3rd and a 100m IM 4th place finish with a time of 1.25.28. Overall there were 15 PBs/New times and Thetford finished in 2nd place behind Beccles and ahead of Beccles B and Hadleigh.

Grace McGill herself swam in both the 12 and under and 13 and under categories and achieved a time of 1.18.82, 2nd place, in 100m back and 37.22, 1st place, in 50m back. The team spirit in and out of the pool was clear to see and the swimmers gave each other and the team great support.

Next came round 2 at Sudbury in May. Again Thetford's swimmers swam really well with them coming in 1st to 3rd place in over half the events. PBs were smashed yet again. Dan Collins was a record breaker this round with a time of 35.68 in the 50m fly for the 12 and under category as well as several other good swims on the day.

Some swimmers were called upon at the last minute to enter events at a higher age group than their own. All this effort culminated in Thetford winning the 'B' Final with a cracking 229 points, Lowestoft and Oulton Broad B were 2nd with 189 points, Hadleigh 165, Felixstowe 163 and finally Deben with 131.

Liam Levy-Twomey had a very good day; earning himself a new PB (with a 1st place time of 43.59 in the 11 and

Thetford Safer Neighbourhood Team

Crackdown on anti-social behaviour Police in Thetford have launched a summer operation to crackdown on anti-social behaviour and anti-social drinking across the neighbourhood. Extra officers will be on patrol at peak times during evenings and weekends in areas most affected by antisocial behaviour. The following action will be taken over the next couple of months: • Officers will be visiting individuals who have previously been involved in anti-social behaviour to deter them from acting in an unacceptable manner. • Visits have been made to a number of schools across Thetford by the local officers, where advice was given about staying safe this summer and acceptable behaviour in the community.

Local Sgt Steve Burke said: “The majority of young people do not cause any trouble and are simply looking for a place to meet up with their friends. However, there is a minority who do cause problems for the rest of the community. We will be taking proactive measures to deal with any person causing anti-social behaviour. “We are working closely with licensed premises to prevent any alcohol related incidents from occurring in our town and the surrounding villages, so that local people can have a safe and enjoyable summer.” To contact Thetford Safer Neighbourhood Team call 0845 456 4567 or email sntthetford@norfolk.pnn.police.uk.

These priorities are chosen by YOU the local community and are then focused on for three months at a time by the SNT. The SNT panel includes Police, Breckland District Council, Thetford Town Council, Flagship and the Fire Service.

• Police will be working closely with pubs and other licensed premises throughout the summer period, to prevent incidents of drink related anti-social behaviour.

The current 3 priorities are as follows: 1 To address cycle security and safety issues in

• Officers will be using their powers to control the consumption of alcohol within the designated areas in Thetford. People who are caught drinking alcohol in the street whilst acting in an anti-social manner, can be fined up to £500 and arrested, if they fail to hand over their alcohol when requested to do so by an officer.
