This month the group will not have one of its usual monthly pub lunch, instead one of our members will host a garden party.

Thetford Probus Club

In July the club are off for a day trip to Greenwich Park where members will be able to visit the Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum, and take a ride on the Thames cable car.

At the June meeting of the club the guest speaker was local historian David Osborne, the days when Mills and Maltings were hives of industry in Thetford are long gone, but David brought them to life again during his talk. He outlined the various mills that had played such an important part of life in the town, and in the malting industry. Highlighting Thetford Mill standing over the river Thet, and still a dominate building in the town, he pointed out, that although being owned by the Ibex Coffee Co until the 1960s, there was no evidence that they used the mill to actually grind coffee, only processing and packing. He told members that at one time or another from the 17th century, Thetford had boasted numerous mills and maltings, most were water or wind powered, other mills such as treadmills and those powered by horses or even by hand would have existed in earlier centuries and had been recorded in the Domesday Book. Amusingly the only treadmills that exist today are those in the leisure centre used by people to keep fit.

Pictured are David Osborne chatting with Ellis Clarke (former Town Clerk of Thetford)

If you would like to be considered for membership of Thetford Probus please contact our secretary David Wood Colin Armes. on 01842 761833.

Maltings for local breweries disappeared some 50 years ago, when they moved to bigger centres like Ipswich and Norwich, Bidwells were the last brewers to operate in the town. Mr Osborne said at one time there had been around 800 working mills in Norfolk, many of them used for drainage, this large number reflected how important they had been to the economy. These days wind turbines are becoming part of our landscape. The speaker at the July meeting will be the Rev Canon Bob Baker on his visit to the Holy Land. Thetford Probus chairman Trevor Burlingham, appealed for younger members to volunteer for various posts which will become vacant at the AGM .

Thetford Past and Present

Since the early 1960s a car park has been situated where the tan pits and yard of Thetford’s tannery once stood; the tannery closed in the late 1920s.The former Tanner’s House can just be seen on the right. The adjacent malt houses were demolished in the mid-1960s to make way for the Riverside Walk development. The past photograph was taken about 1965. Past photograph from the David Osborne collection.

Drake School:TEMPLATE 21/06/2013 15:22 Page 1

On 14th May a big red London Routemaster bus visited Drake Infant and Nursery School in Thetford.

The children really enjoyed being on the bus and gained a lot from this first- hand experience.

In fact it was so much fun that the rest of the school visited the bus too! The year 2 children were doing work on the theme of ‘Transport’ and the bus was the inspiration for lots of activities such as writing and designing and making wheeled vehicles. The bus had been kindly loaned by Thetford Coach Services and the driver Chris Gurr proved to be a mind of information.

Little Pirates and Drake School Nursery were visited by ‘Off the Farm’, a petting farm near Stowmarket. Children from babies up to the age of 4 were taught how to handle and approach the animals and then allowed into the animals’ pen to stroke any that they wanted. The animals included a sheep, a goat, a duck, a goose, a chicken and cockerel, two piglets, a rabbit and baby rabbits. The children had a fantastic day and are looking forward to their next treat supported by the Parent Teacher Association.

Super Heroes:TEMPLATE 21/06/2013 05:49 Page 1

Superheroes Holiday Club

From 30th May - 2nd June during the summer half-term, Grace Church, Abbey Estate put on their 2nd annual Holiday Club at the Arts Centre of the Bishop's School. This year our theme was "Superheroes" and with over 30 children attending over the 4 days we had a brilliant time! After registration at the welcome desk, each day started with some time in groups making crafts such as superhero masks, wristbands, top trump cards and badges. There was some great creativity shown by children and leaders alike with prizes awarded for the top designs. We then got together for our first main session. With all the activity to come it was deemed important for us to be fully warmed up so Paul and Mary Welham led us in a routine to get our muscles primed for action! We sang some songs including "Jesus you're my superhero", watched a drama that teed up the different Bible heroes we looked at day by day (Noah, Samson & David) before watching a DVD or listening to an interactive talk on the said heroes. After another song we headed outside onto the playing fields where Sharon Thompson, our first aider and games guru got us all burning off some energy and building up our superhero skill sets. Nutritional fruit snacks and drinks were then on hand to greet us after all our running around and after a short break we were ready for our 2nd main session. This included more singing, drama and a re-cap and quiz on the Bible story we had looked at earlier. With each Bible hero we focused on what traits and actions made them heroes but we also saw that they weren't perfect and all sinned in various ways. This allowed the focus to be placed firmly on the GREAT hero of the Bible, the Lord Jesus and the session invariably ended with the song, "Super Saviour" to underline that he is the superhero above all superheroes. It was then time for more crafts or games before the 2 hours were up. It was encouraging that a good lot of children were keen to come to the Sunday Service where their parents, grandparents, siblings and friends could see what they'd been up to the previous 3 days through a slide-show and some energetic renditions of the songs we'd been learning. A BBQ after the service rounded the whole Holiday Club off well. We had an excellent team of hard-working leaders (from across the various churches in Thetford) who gave up their time and energy to make it all run so smoothly. I'm very grateful for all their help and a big thanks too of course to all the children for being such superheroes! Tony Heywood (Vicar of Grace Church)

18 Thomas Paine:TEMPLATE 21/06/2013 20:21 Page 1

The 50th Anniversary of the Thomas Paine Society for the day about Thomas Paine's life read out by the Thetford Town Crier, Mike Wabe. A short reading of Paine’s work was then followed by the laying of a floral tribute. The group then retired to the Thomas Paine Hotel for lunch. In the afternoon the party reassembled in Thetford Guildhall, the site of the Lent Assizes which was probably a factor in shaping Paine’s opinion of the injustices of his day. Paul Myles, based in Lewes in Sussex which was Paine’s home for 6 years, presented the latest research from his doctoral study which included petitions from the Excise officers of Wales and Hertfordshire in 1769 foreshadowing Paine's comprehensive pamphlet " The Case of the Officers of Excise " printed in 1772. The Society’s first secretary Robert Morrell then spoke about the society’s beginnings and the involvement of the luminaries of the day such as EP Thompson and Bertrand Russell. As a founding member he reminded the audience about the dilemma they had in the beginning whether to make the Society purely academically orientated or to make it a society for everyone, reflecting Thomas Paine's aims and ambitions which was to reach out to everyone; a course which the society duly followed.

The Anniversary day, Saturday 8th June started at Thetford Grammar School in Paine’s old schoolroom. Stuart Wright, Mayor of Thetford opened proceedings introducing a talk by chairman Chad Goodwin about the events leading up to the formation of the Society in 1963. The 2009 mural about Paine’s life by local artist Ned Pamphillon was then viewed by those assembled. The party then walked to the Thomas Paine statue to the sound of St Peter’s Church bells, which were specially rung for the occasion. A rhyming pronouncement written

Chad Goodwin then spoke about the Society’s achievements and its aspirations for the future which is to continue the core aim: "To promote the recognition of Thomas Paine’s contribution to the cause of freedom and to spread knowledge of his work and activities" Pictured above from left to right: Chad Goodwin (Chairman of the Thomas Paine Society) Stuart Wright (Mayor of Thetford) Mike Wabe (Thetford Town Crier) Paul Myles (Thomas Paine Society committee member from Lewes)

Sensitive skin versus sensitised skin There is always a lot of confusion around when it comes to sensitive skin. Many people perceive that their skin is sensitive. I want to give you a little food for thought on the differences between Sensitive skin and sensitised skin. Firstly, a truly sensitive skin condition is caused by a genetic predisposition. This is found in those individuals who have fair skin and usually have Northern European ancestry. The reason for this could be that there is a lower amount of pigment in the skin and the top layer of skin, the epidermis, being much thinner. A person with true sensitive skin is prone to blushing and may suffer bad hay fever, allergies and asthma.

Denise, Fiona, Jane and Peter

The Thetford Team Looking forward to advising you on your hair.

Fully Air Conditioned Est. 1981

Now, for sensitised skin. This condition can effect any person from any racial origin or skin colour. In fact many people in Asia are suffering from sensitised skin and this is due to the large amounts of pollution in some parts of their region.

The symptoms for both are very similar so you can understand why people are confused. Itching, burning, redness, flushing and stinging, but in many cases, sensitised skin can’t be seen by the naked eye as it is deeper in the skin. Our levels of sensitivity vary daily as the climate we are exposed to varies.

So, what can we do to help this condition? When the skin is healthy a sensitive skin condition is minimised. A professional treatment together with the right lifestyle changes are great ways to start treating sensitised skin. Having an effective sensitised skin treatment includes gentle cleansing with light steam, soothing anti-inflammatory based products, hydration and pressure point massage to help increase the skin’s natural protective barrier while repairing any previous environmentally induced damage.

There are a number of factors which contribute to the process of skin sensitisation. These causes are among the most common and fortunately the most treatable and preventable when lifestyle changes are adapted. Firstly, there is environmental such as, the sun, pollution, cold weather and low humidity. Then there is the ageing process in which the skin naturally becomes thinner, ingredients in cosmetics, lifestyle—nutrition, smoking and finally over cleansing.

23 Megan Grammar:TEMPLATE 21/06/2013 05:55 Page 1

Thetford Grammar School’s young artists have been celebrating more success recently as the school received the results from the latest round of Arts Awards examinations. Top of the class with a Silver Award was Year 10 student Megan Gallacher who produced a superb photography folder, which was the result of an amazing winter’s work.

Many students and parents at TGS know of Megan’s skills already as she has produced the photographs for a number of musicals at the school, and as a result she was well set to achieve success at this level. In addition to Megan’s success the school also saw 16 other students attain bronze awards in a variety of artistic disciplines. The Arts Award scheme was introduced to Thetford Grammar School earlier this year under the watchful eye of Art teacher Mrs Perry. As the year progressed the 17 pupils developed portfolios of work ranging from photography to sculpture.

To achieve an arts award the students have to satisfy a range of criteria from: practising their chosen skill to passing on those techniques to other pupils in the form of a demonstration. This element is probably the most challenging part of the scheme. Finally the young artists also have to study their chosen art form in great detail. More importantly the participants said that they had learnt new skills, enjoyed the sessions, had made products they were pleased with, and overall, rated their ‘teachers’ as ‘BRILLIANT’! Mrs Perry said: ‘The students were pleased with their achievements; they should feel very proud.’ Please mention the About Thetford Community Magazine when responding to advertisements

Streetvibe:TEMPLATE 22/06/2013 15:01 Page 1

Streetvibe On Saturday 1st June the new dedicated performance area in King Street Thetford, was used for the first time by the fantastic dance group, "Streetvibe", over fifty young people took turns in dancing their hearts out for four hours, with hundreds of supporters parents and carers and the public turning out to watch the performances.

I would also like to mention Hughes Electrical on King Street who kindly helped us when our music system went down a big thank you from the group for supporting us and our community and also Lloyds bank who said they may be able to help with funding with a community grant, its great that the local and national businesses support our community. Councillor Carl Clark

The group were raising money for the World Championships which they got through to in Glasgow in August, on the day they raised over ÂŁ280, the girls need accommodation food and costumes for the three day event which has already promoted the wonderful talent that Thetford has to offer. A big thank you to Shirley and Maria who took over a while back and have made it the success it is today and have given "Streetvibe" the opportunity to shine on the world stage, with all the hard work they put in and to the dance choreographers who come alongside the dancers. I feel really blessed in being able to help them with fundraising and support and look forward to driving the minibus for them to Glasgow on August 22nd. I am appealing to anyone who feels it is on their hearts to donate and to help these young people realise their dreams, contact me 01842 824987 / 07741 270914 or go to the "Streetvibe" facebook page and get in touch with Shirley or Maria. MUSEUM OF THETFORD LIFE

Eventually in 1553 the pieces of the tombs in Kenninghall were taken to Framlingham Church, sculptors rebuilt the tombs and added extra pieces. Experts from across the world have tried to reconstruct what the tombs should have looked like using fragments from archaeological excavations, 16th century manuscripts, 3D laser scanning and new computer aided design software.

Ancient House Museum

Thetford’s Lost Tudor Sculptures This summer, Ancient House Museum will unveil a unique exhibition bringing together new research findings and artefacts from Thetford Priory. Once a major monastic site, today the Priory sits on the edge of the town centre in ruins.

Speaking about the new exhibition, Curator Oliver Bone said “This exhibition throws new light on the story of Thetford Priory and the town’s connections with the leading lights of the Tudor court. On display will be at least 14 different fragments including panels on loan from the British Museum. This is the first time in 500 years that these fragments have returned to Thetford. By bringing them together we can explore Thetford’s role in the struggle for power during Henry VIII’s reign.” The team at Ancient House have been working in partnership with academics from Leicester University, Leicester University Space Research Centre, University of Oxford, Yale Centre of British Art and English Heritage. Learning Officer, Melissa Hawker has been developing an app to enable visitors to experience the Priory just before the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540. The museum will have a number of iPads available for visitors to use during tours of the Priory throughout the exhibition.

From medieval times the Dukes of Norfolk were buried at Thetford Priory in large carved stone tombs. The 3rd Duke commissioned elaborate tombs for himself and Henry VIII’s illegitimate son, Henry Fitzroy the Duke of Richmond. However before the tombs were finished, Henry VIII closed Thetford Priory. The unfinished tombs were then moved to Kenninghall with some pieces remaining in Thetford. In the perilous Tudor court the Howards then found themselves out of favour and were imprisoned as a threat towards Henry VIII’s son, the future Edward VI.

Alongside the tomb fragments on display will be a talking portrait of the 3rd Duke, and an interactive feast table. Discover how Anne Boleyn fits into the story of Thetford Priory and Thomas Cromwell’s great act of revenge against the Howards.

May has been very much a mixed emotions month at the Dad’s Army Museum. We have been out and about having fun with the van at Weybourne and more recently Euston. We are hitting record visitor numbers and are now very close to welcoming our 30,000th visitor, which is an astonishing achievement. How sad we are though, that having only just welcomed our patron, Bill Pertwee MBE to the museum on 18th May, we then find ourselves mourning the loss of this great man. Bill loved Thetford and was a great supporter of the museum – it was very humbling to see a beautiful table set out with photographs of the various roles he had played in his long career and there, pride of place, was a selection of recent newspaper cuttings and stories that Sarah Wilson had thoughtfully sent Bill’s companion Maggie – all featuring Thetford.

.

His funeral was a touching celebration of a life well lived and although we will miss him dreadfully, we are safe in the knowledge that he is telling them all up there to ‘put that light out!’ and is giving Napolean a good ear bashing. RIP Bill Pertwee, gone but never forgotten. As part of the Thetford Festival this year, we are planning a huge street party to celebrate the return of Jones’s Van and to raise some money to pay for her! If you loved the Jubilee street party or missed that one, please don’t miss out - individual spaces and tables are now on sale. Thetford Garden Centre supports First Responders Thetford First Responder David Smith said "We have raised in excess of £500 in collections from customers over recent Bank Holidays and received £500 from Thetford Garden Centre which will ensure the First Responders vehicle stays back on the road. It has been extremely difficult without it and also tied up our own vehicles, so we are very grateful to Thetford Garden Centre and their customers. Thetford First Responders are a group of volunteers who respond to emergency calls on behalf of the East of England Ambulance Service. Their aim is to reach a potential life threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the Ambulance crew arrive. Community First Responders are dispatched to the patient by Ambulance Control when the ambulance cannot realistically reach the collapsed patient within the first 8 minutes. Their purpose is to try to make a difference in their community, helping to stabilise the collapsed patient and, in doing so, help to keep the patient alive until the arrival of the more highly skilled Ambulance crew, who are trained to undertake further life saving techniques. If the Ambulance Service can send a Community First Responder who is trained in basic life support, the use of a defibrillator and in administering oxygen to the collapsed patient within three to four minutes, the patient’s chances of survival will increase by 10% for every minute that the Community First Responder is there prior to the arrival of the Ambulance crew. Thetford First Responders provide a vital service which is not funded by the NHS, if you can offer support please contact David on 01842 766760 or 07771 852 240

Grammar School:TEMPLATE 23/06/2013 18:46 Page 1

The school stage was transformed into a garden scene with giant flowers, grasses and greenery with all pupils in Years 4-6 becoming insects of varying roles. Recently pupils at Thetford Grammar Junior School put on two evenings of entertainment with performances of their Summer Term musical ‘Garden Folk’. The story, with a hidden message about the importance of working together as a team, was told through drama, song and dance.

The Year 6s held the main parts amounting to almost an hour and half of lines to learn between them. The performance included an applequake with apples falling from the stage ceiling, an attack of insecticide and a ladybird lodge in which Mrs Ladybird lived with her children! Mrs Butler-Hand, Head of the Junior Department and Director said “Events such as this help to develop our pupils’ confidence at performing in front of audiences, celebrating their many talents that may not otherwise be shown through more academic work. It is also a huge amount of fun for all involved!”

A Special Day at Ford Place

A wonderful new wooden gazebo stood ready to be unveiled in the beautiful surroundings of the Grade II listed building which is Ford Place Nursing Home, part of Barchester Healthcare. Inside a pristine new hair salon waited to be opened. For this special day held on the 21st June, Ford Place opened its doors to the public as part of National Open Day. Residents enjoyed organised activities, especially the live music from Trevor Budgie which created smiles and toe tapping all round. Lynda Moore presented a gorgeous stand of flowers and jewellery, and Gina Galloway displayed the most sumptuous cake stall imaginable. Sophie had made a Marshmallow Tree for which you could make a secret bid. The wonderful creation went to the highest bidder. Dawn Ingham, a Night Nurse at Ford Place, had two very different creations on show both equally exquisite. Infact all the cakes including those of Laura, Annette and Hayley and the kitchen staff wouldn't have looked out of place in the Great British Bake Off! A visit from Dad's Army was very well welcome and with the 1940's bus parked outside residents were eager to take a trip down memory lane. Thirty two visitors joined residents and staff for the fish and chips lunch which was served to approximately seventy people. As the afternoon continued the raffle was drawn and the dog show organised by Karen, a carer at Ford Place, caused much hilarity with its unusual entrants! Muriel Hadley-Brown, Manager of Ford Place said," The residents have had a wonderful day and I would like to thank all members of staff, especially chefs Alex and Marion for the wonderful Lunch and strawberry cream tea. Sylvia Newman, activities coordinator, Dawn Ingham and Gina Galloway Domestic Supervisor for all their hard work in making today so special." Breckland Cats Protection

Thetford (Breckland) Lioness Club

Tel: 01842 810018 We have some good news this month. Our elderly gentleman, Harry, found a lovely new home to spend his remaining years in love and comfort.

Pudding and Quiz Evening

Sadly, still no home for our Keira and she is such a lovely girl. We are getting several enquiries for our kittens which is just as well as we have 28!! We are in need of new fosterers as two of our members have had to give up. We provide the pens which go in your garden, they are 3ft by 13ft and have a hut one end which has light and heat. We pay all the expenses involved connecting the electric and supplying slabs for the pens to go on. If you are interested please call. Silk were the winners of the Pudding and Quiz evening held by the Thetford (Breckland) Lioness Club. A mouthwatering selection of puddings were on offer during the intermission and those attending were able to sample their choices. In excess of £250.00 was raised which will go to Lioness Charities that include macular degeneration and first responders. Lioness meetings are held at 8pm the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at Kings Court in Earls Street. New members are welcomed. Peter is a very friendly, playful cat who loves a cuddle. He is approx 18 months old, neutered, micro chipped and vaccinated. Peter follows you around like a little dog. He has lovely shiny, sleek, soft black fur. Can you offer him the home he deserves as he would love to be able to go out in a garden.

Century Logistics donation boosts Green Ventures Bikes Thetford based Century Logistics has made a generous donation of spare bike parts to Keystone Development Trust’s social enterprise Green Bikes. The donation will enable the social enterprise to keep prices at their current levels, offering even better value for money to the public. Since funding for the bike project came to an end the shop has relied on generating its own income to continue. Century Logistics’ donation, made up of wheels, tyres, tubes, seats and a range of other parts, will enable the Green Bikes team to recycle an increased number of bikes.

equating to over 80 tons removed from the waste stream. Recently the shop became involved in helping at the East Anglian Children’s Hospices (EACH) ride for life, and as a result of this and the donation of parts the proceeds of one bike sale per month will go to EACH. Visit the Green Bikes website at www.keystonetrust.org.uk/green-ventures to learn more about the Green Bikes shop and services.

Green bikes project coordinator James Strutton said ‘We were overwhelmed as to the amount of parts, and that a local company could be so generous. These parts will now make it possible to refurbish bikes that may have proved uneconomical to do so before, as a result diverting more waste from landfill, increasing re-use, and enhancing the range of bikes Green Bikes has in stock’. Century Logistics Steven Basey Fisher said ‘When our Engineering Manager Mick Lowry approached us with this initiative we were only too happy to help. We are delighted that Green Ventures have the ability to turn this wide range of durable bicycle spare parts into such good use. As a local employer in the area it was very important for us to support such a worthwhile venture as this and we wish Green Ventures continued success in the future.’ The Green Ventures shop which is at 39 Brunel Way, IP24 1HP is open Monday to Friday 10.30 – 4.30 and Saturday 10.00 – 2.00. The shop now offers an increased product range and has a strong reputation for repairs and services, together with selling new bikes alongside the continued sale of refurbished bikes Bikes are collected from Bury and Mildenhall Household Waste sites and from donations from the public. Bikes are then assessed and either receives a full refurbishment while others are stripped for parts. All the Green Bikes mechanics are Cytech-qualified ensuring the safety and quality of the reconditioned bikes for sale. The refurbished bikes are available to purchase and range in price from £40 upwards. Since the project started the venture has collected over 5,000 bikes,
