THE GALÁPAGOS
A week of unforgettable wildlife encounters and eye-opening discoveries with National GeographicLindblad Expeditions’ new edition Gemini
By Ming Tappin
miles west of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, the 200+ islands, islets and rocks that comprise the Galápagos archipelago were born from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. Today, just three percent of the archipelago is inhabited; the other 97 percent has been designated as a national park, and the surrounding ocean is a marine reserve.
The Galápagos Islands are one of the rare places on earth where wildlife has no fear of humans because they have lived in solitude and without predators. In a complete role reversal, the animals and birds approach you with curiosity. This is what makes the islands so special to visit and why they have been on my travel list for over 10 years.
My patience paid off with an opportunity to sail with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions in July. I arrived on Baltra Island on a two-hour flight via Guayaquil, the humid air greeting me as I deplaned onto the tarmac. I was met outside the terminal by two smiling naturalists holding National Geographic Gemini signs, and they whisked me and other guests to meet our home for the week.
An intimate ship with a few surprises
National Geographic Gemini is a jewel of a ship, originally built to carry 100 guests but refitted to accommodate only 48. Nat Geo-Lindblad acquired the vessel in 2024 (along with a second 16-guest vessel, then known as Celebrity Xpedition and Celebrity Xploration, respectively), and my fateful voyage also happened to be the official naming ceremony of both ships.
In preparation for joining the fleet, Gemini received a full renovation and features a delightful Darwin Restaurant, an airy outdoor Beagle Grill buffet, and the Discovery Lounge, all of which can seat all 48 guests at once. A full-service bar, library, gift shop, fitness centre, massage room and hot tub complete the ship’s amenities. It was a nice surprise to see so many facilities aboard such a small vessel, and I quickly settled in and mingled with my fellow travellers, many of whom had already taken at least one or two Nat Geo-Lindblad expeditions in the past.
Accommodations onboard include oceanview and balcony cabins (three offer single occupancy), a family suite and a premium suite. Several balcony cabins inter-connect, and a few have sofabeds for a third guest. Because of the wildlife encounters, Gemini
is popular with families, and it offers an Explorers-In-Training program where youngsters can learn about the Galápagos through naturalist-guided activities. On my expedition was also an 11-member multi-generational group, with grandparents travelling with their adult children and grandkids.
Another surprise was the quality of the dining experience. Gemini’s culinary wizards created delicious meals every day, including many regional specialties in addition to continental and international favourites. Galápagos tour operators must source all food ingredients locally, resulting in ample opportunities for me to taste sustainably caught fish, island-raised meats and home-grown produce.
A unique expedition experience
Gemini offers a comprehensive expedition program that includes nature walks, Zodiac cruising, snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding. Naturalists also conducted enrichment lectures on Galápagos wildlife, and I most enjoyed a fascinating story about the life of Charles Darwin and how his unplanned visit to the Galápagos Islands in 1835 resulted in his
National Geographic Gemini interior
controversial theory of evolution, “On the Origin of Species”. A National Geographiccertified photo instructor also taught photography workshops, including lessons on mobile phone photography – a Nat GeoLindblad exclusive experience.
The Galápagos is home to 97 percent of reptiles and land mammals, 80 percent of land birds, and 30 percent of plants found nowhere else on earth. National Park rules dictate that visitors must stay at least six feet away from wildlife, but there are no rules for the animals to stay away from humans! We had magical animal encounters daily, including Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants, sea turtles and adorable sea lions, whose antics above and below the waterline were so endearing. Napping sea lions barely raised an eyebrow as we sat next to them on the beach. Blue-footed, red-footed and Nazca boobies didn’t flinch when we photographed them at close range. In one afternoon while cruising to the next island, we crossed paths with a blue whale (very rare in these waters), and Captain Nathaly turned the ship around so we could observe it. These close encounters are what makes a Galápagos expedition so different from others.
Our itinerary was busy, visiting seven islands in seven days. There were up to three outings off the ship per day, but no one complained – how could we when every day brought amazing wildlife and new discoveries? We snorkelled off the red sand beach on Rabida, visited Santiago’s desolate lava fields, spotted Galápagos penguins and land iguanas on Isabela, walked amongst marine iguanas in Fernandina, examined adult and juvenile boobies up close on Genovesa, chilled with the lumbering giant tortoises on Santa Cruz, and hiked up to the highest point on Bartolemé for spectacular views.
Gemini, as with all Nat Geo-Lindblad ships, has an open bridge policy, and the officers are happy to share navigation information and answer questions. I found myself one night sitting next to Captain Nathaly as she maneuvered our vessel to our next destination, another special moment.
Genovesa Island
A company that promotes responsible travel
Out of nearly 100 tour vessels operating in the Galápagos, few have the experience, know-how and dedication to the islands like Nat Geo-Lindblad. Lars-Eric Lindblad was the first to bring visitors to the islands in 1967. In 2004, the company signed a partnership with National Geographic to promote responsible tourism and collaborate on conservation efforts in protecting the oceans, lands and communities around the world. The company’s dedication to the Galápagos is tireless, providing financial support to the Charles Darwin Foundation for research projects, aiding local artisans to improve their craft (and selling their wares onboard its ships), funding scholarships for Galápagos children to become the next generation of conservationists and much more.
CEO Natalya Leahy, who joined the company in January 2025, is ensuring that Nat Geo-Lindblad stays true to its mission of providing transformational travel at a time when expedition operators are marketing trips with luxury suites, champagne and caviar. “What will stay consistent is our commitment to prioritize and deliver an authentic and enriching experience for our guests,” Leahy said. According to Leahy, adventure travel is the fastest growing segment in the travel industry, with 22 million U.S. households, 4 million U.K. households, and 3.8 million Australian households fitting the demographic. Nat Geo-Lindblad’s global fleet carries less than 40,000 guests per year, so these figures translate to a huge potential for growth. Leahy is also hoping to attract more Canadian travellers, who currently make up a small percentage of Nat Geo-Lindblad guests. With Toronto-based Cara Matthew leading the way as the country’s regional sales director, plans are in place to educate travel advisors about the brand and help support their sales efforts. “I would love to see more Canadian guests travel with us in the future,” Leahy added.
A week flew by quickly, and I was back onboard my flight to Guayaquil. As I flew over the Gemini anchored offshore, I already knew I wanted to return. Galápagos itineraries vary from week to week, cruise line to cruise line. And since different islands host different and unique flora and fauna, and the time of the year you visit also determines what you see (mating, nesting and births of animals and birds, whale migrations, for example), no two expeditions will be alike. I can’t wait to walk and swim among the fearless creatures again, hopefully soon.
Good to know
National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions operates the largest fleet in the Galápagos, which, in addition to Gemini, consists of the 48-guest National Geographic Islander II, 96-guest National Geographic Endeavour II, and 16-guest National Geographic Delfina, the latter of which was also introduced to the fleet this year. With four vessels offering four- and seven-day cruises year-round, guests can benefit from a variety of itineraries that can combine with land extensions to Quito and Peru (including the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu).
All meals, standard wine, beer, spirits, specialty coffees and teas, all expedition landings and activities, snorkel gear, standard Wi-Fi and Galápagos National Park entrance fees are included in the fare. To accommodate international flight arrivals, a one-night pre- and a one-night post-cruise hotel in Guayaquil or Quito are included, as are transfers between the airport, hotel and ship. International flights, domestic flights to/from Baltra and crew gratuities are not included. Nat Geo-Lindblad has an air department to assist with flights.
The Galápagos Islands are located on the equator. Although the air temperature remains warm throughout the year (between 25 and 30˚C), the water temperature varies. It hovers between 23-28˚C from January and June, and 15-23˚C from June to December. A shorty wetsuit is provided for snorkelling during the cooler months.
