Do’s and don’ts for planning great family vacations – from 6 travel advisors who’ve been there

TORONTO — Just a few years ago, a six-figure booking for a multigenerational family vacation would have been the stuff of travel industry urban legend.

These days, it’s far from unheard of. For Brenda Goodby, CTM – Certified Virtuoso Cruise & Travel Advisor based in Lethbridge, AB, it was a $110,000 booking, and it was the real deal.

She’s not the only one seeing big dollar numbers for family getaways. Demand for customized and more complex family vacations continues to soar, long after the initial postpandemic surge, and many travel advisors tell Travelweek that family vacation budgets have soared too.

For Goodby, the booking started with a core of four family members, and soon multiplied into a multi-gen mega-trip complete with in-laws, brothers, sisters and grandkids.

“The booking grew from a family vacation of one week to two weeks, and from 4 people to 22, within a week of my suggesting they share the idea with other family members. It was a sales increase from $10k to $110k within a week,” she says.

Goodby and other family travel specialists contacted by Travelweek say that while Mexico and the Caribbean and their ever-expanding portfolios of all-inclusive resorts are

still very popular, demand for more bespoke family vacations – the type of bookings travellers most often need an agent’s help with – is strong and growing.

Curated family trips come at a cost, plus the price of just about everything, including travel, is up. What about inflation concerns, and the economy?

“Although family vacations have gone up in price over the last few years, I’m not seeing a decrease when it comes to family travel bookings,” says Ellison Travel & Tours’ Beth Baskey in London, ON. “Families are continuing to travel, and many are comfortable with the cost to do so. I’m finding that families that have always travelled, are making it priority to continue to do so.”

While there’s more competition now than ever for family travel dollars, the value of all-inclusive vacations means this travel style will always have staying power. Goodby says she’s seeing clients focus on vacations with food, drinks and entertainment to manage economic concerns. Families pooling resources to share large vacation rentals or cabins on cruises are also on the rise, she adds.

COSTA RICA, ASIA & EUROPE: THE NEW FAMILY TRAVEL FAVOURITES

Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, Japan and Thailand, Europe, cruises

and African safaris: these are just a few of bucket list dream destinations that have become go-to vacation spots for many families.

It’s all part of the changing nature of family travel vacations. Well-travelled Millennial parents are eager for their kids to see the world, and at a young, impressionable age.

“Travel really is the best classroom. Adding hands-on educational experiences into family trips, like cooking with locals, visiting conservation centres or exploring ancient ruins, creates opportunities for families to engage meaningfully with the world,” says Jane Patrick with North South Travel in Vancouver.

Patrick says she’s seeing families and multi-gen families “looking to slow down when they travel, requesting more nights in one city or destination before moving onto the next and to travel with intention.”

Boomer grandparents, often footing the bill, are typically along for the ride.

“Multi-generational travel just keeps growing, with families putting more focus on spending meaningful time together. I’m especially seeing grandparents investing their time and money into family experiences now, while they can truly enjoy them, rather than waiting for ‘someday’,” says Lauri Walters with Direct Travel in Calgary.

Walters adds that family vacation budgets “are definitely higher today. Rising hotel, flight, and dining costs, combined with more families traveling internationally, mean trips are more expensive. On top of that, extras like excursions, tips, and unexpected expenses can easily add 20 - 40% more, so planning ahead is key.”

Part of the rise in family travel vacation costs is coming from the temporary shift away from the U.S., catapulting long-haul international destinations to the top of family travel wish lists.

Agents tell Travelweek that their family clients are continuing to book away from the U.S. One agent pegs the drop in her agency’s U.S. bookings at 95%; another says that less than 5% of her family clients are booking U.S. destinations right now.

Authentic experiences that emphasize togetherness, meanwhile, are big business for family clients. Private villas, family-friendly resorts, and custom itineraries that mix relaxation with adventure are seeing big demand, says Clara Power with Power Travel in Vaughan, ON.

“Experiences that appeal across generations are especially popular,” says Power. “Families also want convenience through seamless planning and easy transfers, while still enjoying touches of luxury.”

THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF FAMILY TRAVEL

Anyone who’s seen a young traveller wilt under the hot summer sun on yet another hours-long tour of an ancient ruin will understand that when it comes to planning successful multigen family trips, flexibility is key.

“The do’s: Plan early, build in flexibility, and create a mix of shared and independent experiences,” says Power. “The don’ts: Try not to overschedule, avoid assuming everyone has the same interests or energy levels, and do not leave important details like room configurations or dining reservations to chance. Families often underestimate how early they need to book, especially for peak seasons, or assume every resort can easily accommodate large groups with connecting rooms.”

Lisa Dunne with Treasured Moments Travel in Dunnville, ON recommends agents have a group conversation with one head person from each room, “to iron out all of the details in advance to help create good, open communication and start off on the right foot.”

Patrick says a schedule of meetings with multi-gen family trip clients can be a big help. “This allows advisors to ensure every-one is on the same page. Children are also invited to the meeting – and I usually ask them a few questions about what they are interested in, what they like to do.

Children travel at a slower pace and generally have a slower attention span. You need to account for these differences in the itinerary planning. It’s impossible to expect a 6-year-old to spend five hours walking around the Roman Colosseum.”

Patrick also emphasizes the importance of everyone in the family getting some alone time on the trip too. “Clients often feel they should do everything together as it’s a family vacation. In reality, even the most loving families need space and alone time.”

Baskey points out that organizing a group vacation can be difficult for the group leader. “It’s unrealistic for everyone to agree when presented with too many options. I advise the group leader to get a sense of everyone’s interests and ideas, then we can chat and narrow down options. I recommend presenting no more than two options to the family to decide on. Family members are usually grateful for the opportunity to travel together and agreeable to what the group leader ultimately decides.”

Walters notes the importance of not overlooking “small comforts and hidden costs that make a big difference for kids and seniors.”

Establish a clear budget early on in the process, says Patrick, and communicate with the group and give updates on a regular basis.

Most importantly? “Be sure to charge a planning or professional fee to cover your time and expertise.”

Red carpet night for Fort Myers Islands, Beaches & Neighborhoods at TIFF

TORONTO Fort Myers Islands, Beaches & Neighborhoods rolled out the red carpet, literally, at its travel industry event recently with a postevent after-party at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Once again the popular Florida destination was one of the sponsors for the Hello! Canada x Toronto Life Magazine Hollywood North Party, in partnership with Rogers.

Another sponsor, The Sutton Place Hotel Toronto, played host with its beautiful new property on King St. West, steps from the TIFF Lightbox.

It was a full circle moment, as The Sutton Place in its former location on Bay St. was the go-to spot for TIFF celebrities before the film festival moved to King West.

“FORT

MYERS BEACH LOOKS FANTASTIC”

The night got started with Fort Myers Islands, Beaches & Neighborhoods’ cocktail reception at nearby Le Germain Hotel.

These may be challenging times for U.S. tourism, but visitation to Fort Myers was up 5.5% January - June 2025.

“Let’s keep it going, let’s make this a great fall,” said Jeanette Faria, Product Manager, Fort Myers Islands, Beaches & Neighborhoods and part of the VoX International team, which represents Fort Myers Islands, Beaches & Neighborhoods in Canada.

Faria noted that Fort Myers is well-known and much-loved for many things, from golf, to the Island Hopper Songwriting Fest, to Sanibel

Island, known as the seashell capital of the world.

Most of all, Fort Myers is famous for its beaches. “Great news, Fort Myers has completely finished its beach restoration with 1 million cubic yards of sand. Fort Myers Beach looks fantastic,” said Faria.

The destination has not one, not two, but three airlines offering lift from the Canadian market. “We want to say thank you to Air Canada, WestJet and Porter for their fantastic service,” said Faria.

Fort Myers and surrounding areas include Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel & Captiva islands, Boca Grande & Outer Islands, Pine Island, Matlacha, Cape Coral, North Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, Estero, Alva, Buckingham, and Lehigh Acres.

HOTEL NEWS & MORE

In hotel news, Sanibel Island is opening its first new hotel in 40 years. Shalimar Beach Resort is planning a soft opening on Sept. 28 as the first Sanibel Island resort to be completely rebuilt, post-Hurricane Ian. The new construction, 33room resort, will offer Gulf-front studios, one- and two-bedroom villas. Reservations are available for stays beginning October 2025. The property was built with hurricane resiliency in mind: impact doors, windows, walls, roof structure. Buildings are 6 feet above the base flood elevation. More than 500 concrete pilings are installed below the foundation. With sensitivity to the natural environment, turtle lighting has been installed for protection during nesting season.

Sun Splash Family Waterpark in Cape Coral has opened Paradise Cove, a US$4 million wave pool. The 12,000-square-foot pool features seven wave patterns and varying intensities. In addition, a 16-foot movie screen will be added for dive-in movies and other events.

A multimillion-dollar renovation of meeting and event space is underway at Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa. With completion this fall, the renovation complements

recent updates to its rooms, waterpark and restaurants.

The Island Hopper Songwriter Fest is back for its 11th year with dozens of BMI songwriters set to play against the tropical island backdrop of Fort Myers’ islands, beaches and neighbourhoods. Singer-songwriters who have penned hits for such artists as Eric Church, Faith Hill, Grand Funk Railroad, Harry Connick Jr., Jake Owen, Jason Aldean and LoCash will perform at multiple venues, Sept. 1928. More than 60 singer-songwriters will perform over 80 performances during the 10-day music fest.

South Seas Island Resort has reopened its amenities including pools, restaurants, golf and fitness centre. Villa-style accommodations

are available and a new water feature is scheduled for a December opening.

Best Western Plus Beach Resort has renovated the beachfront property and reopened. Suites, rooms, a private beach, complimentary breakfast, heated pool, watersports and pet-friendly accommodation are available.

Jensen’s Twin Palm Resort and Marina, popular since its opening in 1977, the vacation and fishing spot with direct access to Pine Island Sound, is welcoming visitors.

Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts purchased the property formerly known as Beachview Cottages, a 22-unit condo property that was destroyed by Hurricane Ian. Plans are underway to rebrand the new building as White Pelican Villas, with 22 units in three buildings tied together with a shared, covered walkway. The resort is farther back from the beach and plans to open early 2026.

AIRLINES

The latest tentative agreement vote by Air Canada’s 10,000 flight attendants doesn’t mean strike action. After CUPE announced that the tentative agreement was not ratified by union members, Air Canada noted that, “Air Canada and CUPE contemplated this potential outcome and mutually agreed that if the tentative agreement was not ratified, the wage portion would be referred to mediation and, if no agreement was reached at that stage, to arbitration. The parties also agreed that no labour disruption could be initiated, and therefore there will be no strike or lock-out, and flights will continue to operate.”

Air Canada’s first new route for its brand new Airbus A321 extralong range (XLR) aircraft will be Montreal-Palma de Mallorca. Delivery of the XLR fleet begins in the first quarter of 2026. The new service linking Montreal and Palma de Mallorca starts June 17, 2026 and runs through Oct. 24, 2026. Seats are available for sale now. “The wait is nearly over as the imminent arrival of the game-changing Airbus A321XLR marks the next phase of international growth at Air Canada,” said Mark Galardo, EVP & CCO, and President, Cargo at Air Canada.

DISRUPTIONS

The U.S. administration is abandoning a Biden-era plan that sought to require airlines to compensate stranded passengers with cash, lodging and meals for flight cancellations or changes caused by a carrier. The proposed rule would have aligned U.S. policy more closely with European airline consumer protections. It was proposed last December in the final weeks of then-President Joe Biden’s administration, leaving its fate in the hands of his Republican successor. Now the U.S. Transportation Department said its plan to scrap the proposed rule is “consistent with Department and administration priorities.”

CRUISE

CLIA has launched a legal challenge against Hawaii’s decision to apply a tax to cruise passengers. The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the District of Hawaii, questions the legality of extending the Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) to cruising. The state initially applied the tax to shore-based transient accommodations in January. In May, lawmakers approved an increase from 10.25% to 11% and voted to extend the levy to cruise passengers, beginning January 2026. CLIA said the measure places an unfair burden on travellers while potentially breaching U.S. law.

Intrepid expands European lineup with 32 new trips

TORONTO Intrepid Travel is expanding its footprint in Europe with the launch of 32 new itineraries across 15 countries, including three brand-new destinations for the company Madeira, the Canary Islands and the Faroe Islands.

This marks one of Intrepid’s largest expansions in the region to date and reflects shifting traveller demand amid concerns over overtourism and climate change.

While bookings to popular destinations like Greece, Spain and Croatia are still seeing year-onyear growth, the company says that more travellers are choosing to visit these destinations during shoulder season months. As a result, Intrepid has expanded departure dates throughout the year.

The company also notes that demand for alternative summer destinations has surged – up 23% in the Nordics and 52% in the Balkans. Serbia, the Czech Republic and Albania all rank among Intrepid’s fastest-growing European destinations.

“Travellers have long shared a deep love of Europe, but the realities of overtourism and climate change are reshaping where and how people choose to explore,” says Erica Kritikides, General Manager of Experiences, Intrepid Travel. “As is true of all our trips, Intrepid is committed to creating responsible European travel experiences, in partnership with our locally-based teams, that not only inspire travellers but also support communities and protect these remarkable places for the future.”

WestJet finalizes largest-ever Canadian Boeing order

WestJet is making aviation history with its largest aircraft order to date, finalizing a deal with Boeing for dozens of narrowbody and widebody aircraft, with additional options that push the airline’s future fleet growth well into the next decade.

The order includes 60 737-10 MAX narrowbody aircraft – with options for an additional 25 – and seven 787-9 Dreamliner widebody aircraft, with options for four more. In total, the order increases the airline’s current order book to 123 aircraft and 40 options.

“With the addition of these aircraft, WestJet has the largest order book of any airline in Canada and will double our fleet of Dreamliners, underpinning our growth plans and our commitment to affordable travel options for Canadians from coast-to-coast and exciting career paths for our people,” said WestJet Chief Executive Officer, Alexis von Hoensbroech. “These highly efficient and comfortable aircraft are critical to the growth and renewal of our fleet and will also significantly improve our fuel consumption.”

Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, added: “We are honoured that WestJet has once again placed its trust in Boeing with a major investment that builds on our three decades of partnership and solidifies their fleet for the decades ahead. We look forward to supporting WestJet’s exciting growth as they leverage the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner to serve even more guests with great efficiency and comfort.”

WestJet has served millions of Canadians onboard Boeing aircraft since its inception in 1996. It currently operates 193 passenger aircraft, inclusive of 147 Boeing 737s, seven 787s and 39 DeHavilland Q400s. With an average age of approximately 10 years, WestJet’s fleet is considered among the youngest of North American carriers.

The event is taking place this week in Riviera Maya, bringing together British suppliers and top buyers from across Canada, the United States and Brazil.

The three-day mission will connect 53 British tourism suppliers with 47 international buyers, offering an opportunity to highlight the breadth of Britain’s tourism offerings.

“This major trade mission brings our incredibly important Brazil, Canada and USA markets together with British suppliers to do business and drive economic growth. We are shining the spotlight on the fantastic products and experiences on offer across Britain, making sure those are sold internationally, boosting Britain’s economy,” said VisitBritain CEO Patricia Yates, who is leading the trade mission.

Destinations being featured include Bath, Birmingham, Bristol, the Cotswolds, County Durham, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Manchester, Liverpool, Oxfordshire, the Peak District and the West Midlands, along with highlights from Scotland and Wales.

“The size of our delegation shows the enthusiasm from British tourism suppliers to do business in these markets and to hear first-hand from buyers on the motivations and trends driving travel to Britain,” added Yates.

British suppliers taking part in the mission represent a cross-section of the tourism industry, including hotels, visitor attractions, transportation providers, retailers, tour operators and sightseeing companies. Said Yates: “We are looking forward to showcasing our warm welcome alongside the great reasons to book a trip to Britain right now.”

The mission also builds on VisitBritain’s international marketing efforts, including the ongoing ;Starring GREAT Britain’ campaign. Launched earlier this year, the campaign leverages the global popularity of film and television, encouraging travellers to visit destinations that have appeared on screen.

An estimated 983,000 Canadians are expected to visit Britain by year’s end, spending £942 million on their trips.

Top 5 reasons to travel to Türkiye with Turkish Airlines

Few airlines straddle global reach and cultural immersion like Turkish Airlines, which serves more destinations than any other carrier. Whether on a stopover or starting a longer trip, travellers have plenty of reasons to travel to Türkiye with Turkish Airlines.

1. Flying chefs & award-winning service. When flying Business Class on Turkish Airlines, passengers experience gourmet meals prepared by onboard Flying Chefs. The carrier is known for its attention to detail and in-flight comfort, offering a calm, comfortable start to guests’ journeys.

2. Istanbul: Where continents, eras and empires intersect. Istanbul is a city where Roman forums and Ottoman palaces coexist with contemporary galleries and cutting-edge design. Its streets hum with daily rituals: the clatter of tea glasses, the bustle of markets spilling into historic squares, and the city’s famously-free-roaming cats make Istanbul unlike anywhere else in the world.

3. Istanbul Stopover and Touristanbul. Long layovers turn into cultural detours with free hotel stays or guided tours with Turkish Airlines’ Stopover program. Travellers can make the most of their time on the ground and explore landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and Grand Bazaar during their connection.

4. Boarding pass privileges worldwide. All travellers need to do is show their Turkish Airlines boarding pass to access discounts on dining, museums and shops in Türkiye and select destinations worldwide. It’s a simple way to add more value to their trip.

5. Fly anywhere in the world. Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than any other airline. Nonstop service from Canada to Istanbul easily connects travellers to over 340 cities across Europe, Asia and Africa.

Jamaica shines on ACTA’s Immersive Destination Experience

TORONTO Jamaica set the stage for ACTA’s latest Immersive Destination Experience, welcoming 30 Canadian travel advisors for five days of exploration and learning.

With support from the Jamaica Tourist Board, Sandals Resorts and Air Canada, the program gave advisors a firsthand look at the island’s culture, attractions and resorts, while reinforcing Jamaica’s position as a top-selling Caribbean destination.

ACTA’s Immersive Destination Experiences are designed to transform the traditional FAM by combining experiential learning with social media marketing. By working closely with destination partners and suppliers,

ACTA aims to provide advisors with the tools, knowledge and confidence to better serve their clients.

Dan Hamilton, Sales Manager, Jamaica Tourist Board, said: “We want to ensure travel advisors are empowered with firsthand destination knowledge and unique experiences to provide them the resources, information and contacts they need to confidently advise their clients. The professional travel advisor remains the primary conduit of business to Jamaica and so we stand by our travel advisors and support them in any way we can.”

The program was hosted on Jamaica’s north coast at Ocho Rios, where advisors stayed at Sandals Dunn’s River and spent their days immersed in the history and culture of authentic Jamaica. Excursions included visits to Seville Great House, Laughing Water Falls and the GoldenEye resort.

“Simply put, travel advisors are the lifeblood of Sandals Resorts and have been for over 40 years. The chance to partner with ACTA and showcase the Sandals product, especially in our backyard of Jamaica, has been invaluable,” said C.J. Smith, Director of Sales, Unique Vacations Canada

Inc., an affiliate of the worldwide representative of Sandals & Beaches Resorts. “For many of the participating advisors, this was their first Sandals experience and I’m absolutely certain that they’re leaving with a newfound sense of confidence in selling Sandals Resorts and reaping the many benefits available to them in doing so.”

In addition to exploring Sandals Resorts, the group participated in educational sessions hosted by the Jamaica Tourist Board, Sandals Resorts, Air Canada and ACTA. The sessions gave advisors access to upto-date information, resources and contacts that will support their client relationships and future bookings.

“This FAM has been such a valuable experience because it incorporated the history and culture of Jamaica –it was much more than just touring rooms. It gives you the confidence to sell the destination, not just a resort,” said travel advisor Dave Berry.
