The pandemic came as a speed breaker to our hurtling lives

While the world is still reeling under the shock wave of the last nine months, we can try and look at the positive side of these strange times.

The first thing to feel positive about is if you are negative. Imagine of all the number of people who have been caught unawares by the c-virus, what a stroke of happy luck that you’ve managed to stay clear of its clutches.

On a personal level, the enforced isolation and being indoors has been a good time for introspection and getting back in touch with your core, with deeper self-realisation and understanding of our own natures.

Something that we never had time, nor inclination, to delve into.

In our hitherto hustle of busy lives as we flitted around making much ado about nothing, the pandemic served as a sudden speed breaker that forced us to come to a screeching halt and take stock of our lives. Instead of mindlessly zooming ahead with no clear destination in mind, we found that life can be quite simple, and that it is not necessary to complicate it so much with our compulsive need for non-stop action. There can be pleasure in leisure, bliss without bluster, and slow may actually be the new smart.

As life continues to hang in balance, with physical safety on the one side and economic reality on the other, we have begun to step out tentatively into the world, but with a newfound perspective of priorities.

We are now more balanced in our wants and expectations. We are easier with ourselves and those around us. And we have rediscovered the simple joys of life.

Bangalore has a vast network of BMTC buses plying within the city. The best way is to check locally for routes and bus numbers to reach a particular destination. Be prepared for some wait time though.

ith Bengaluru, the sobriquets keep getting added up. From Air Conditioned City to Aviation Capital to Garden City, this small town turned technopolis has added a new word to the American lexicon: ‘Bangalored’. It means ‘to lose one’s job’ as a result of off shoring work to India.

That’s not all. The city is emerging as a medical tourism hub in India by offering ‘First World Service at Third World Cost’. What’s more, the best and the brightest multinationals are spicing up the retail scene by test-marketing large format stores like Reebok, Levi’s, Adidas, Esprit and Nautica. It’s become a ‘yuppie heaven’. Now that’s yet another sobriquet for the city.

With the Metro Rail opening in phases, things are getting better by the day. Visit the city and be bowled over.

Kasturba Road, Bangalore GPO Established in 1866 and located on Kasturba Road, this is one of the oldest museums in India. Housed in a red stucco Neo-Classical building with Corinthian columns, it has 18 sections with a fine collection of jewellery, miniature paintings, sculpture, artifacts from Mohenjo-Daro and much more.

Kemp Fort, Old Airport Road

Located behind on Old Airport Road, this statue is 65 feet tall, depicting Lord Shiva in lotus position. It has the backdrop of Mount Kailash, Shiva’s heavenly abode and the river Ganga flowing from his matted locks.

Rajajinagar Also known as North Star is a 32-floor building. It was constructed by Brigade Enterprises which also consists of the Sheraton hotel, Colombia Asia hospital, the Orion Mall, and so on. WTC Bangalore is recognised for international trade and opportunities.

Dr Ambedkar Veddi Road, North of Cubbon Park Built of granite and porphyry, this is the seat of the Secretariat and the State Legislature.

Built in 1956, it has a dome, Rajasthani Jharokhas and Indo- Saracenic pillars. Things to watch out for: the sandalwood door to the Cabinet Room, and the Speaker’s Chair which is made of Mysore rosewood.

Laid out by Mysuru ruler Haider Ali in 1740 spread over 240 acres. Its tropical plants were imported by Haider and his son Tipu Sultan from countries as diverse as Afghanistan, Persia, Mauritius, Turkey and Africa. Ogle at the Glass House modeled on London’s Crystal Palace.

There is an annual flower show as well. Climb the rock mountain and take a look at Bangalore from the top.

Junction of Jalahalli and Mathikere The Jayaprakash Narayan Park boasts of 20,000 varieties of plant species, 60,000 flowering plants and shrubs and 5,000 medicinal herbs. It also include a 4.5-km jogging track, bamboo garden, women’s playground with dedicated shuttle and tennikoit court, football court, 1,000-seater amphitheatre and so on. The big lake there attracts migratory birds.

Timings: 5am-8.30am & 5pm-8.30pm.

BANNERGHATTA NATIONAL PARK

Located 22 km from Bangalore, it is a sanctuary for wildlife, bears, reptiles, elephants and deer. Chief attractions include the lion and tiger safari, herbivore safari and the butterfly park. The Bannerghatta Nature Camp offers a package and a guided nature walk. It is closed on Tuesdays.

ISKCON TEMPLE

Hare Krishna Hills,West of Chord Road, Rajajinagar The International Society for Krishna Consciousness is one of the most sought after destinations in India. The white temple building has gorgeous deities of Lord Radha Krishna.

Bull Temple Road, Basavanagudi This is a typical Dravidian-style temple built by Kempe Gowda I. It is has a monolith bull that is 4.5m tall and 6.5m long. It was apparently built to appease a vagrant bull which persisted in devouring all the groundnuts in the surrounding fields. Once this temple was built, the bull stayed away from the groundnuts. A Groundnut Fair (Kadalekayi Parishe) near the temple premises is held every year.

s unprecedented as the Covid pandemic has been, the seemingly ubiquitous lurking coronavirus has changed the rules of the game whether in doing business or in social situations.

What was once considered the norm is no longer acceptable.

The world has changed irrevocably under the onslaught of this new pandemic that has been sweeping across the globe since more than half the year with no end in sight.

Never before in our lifetime has business been brought down to its knees the way this microscopic C-virus has done. Society has transformed worldwide from being essentially gregarious to becoming isolationist, at least in principle if not always in practice. The term “social distancing” was coined as best behavioural tactic to avoid contact with other human beings so as not to contract Covid from known or asymptomatic carriers.

Still, life has to go on, and go on it must. How long can mankind sit inside their home indefinitely? It is commerce at the end of the day that keeps the wheels of the world oiled and turning.

feet slowly and steadily.

Working within the framework of the ‘new normal’, shops, offices, restaurants, hotels, entertainment zones and commercial establishments have reopened after a few initial tentative false starts. While it’s not ‘business as usual’ as customers still prefer to err on the side of caution and avoid going out to the extent possible, yet people have begun to venture out, masks firmly in place, to get back the reins of their lives in their own hands once again to carry on the business of living.

In the business and commercial space, strict safety norms are being applied by company, shop or any other commercial outfit, and even apartment complexes. At the entrance, sanitiser is

first offered to customers to rub on their hands as the first and immediate line of defence. Many places have installed the foot operated sanitiser spray bottle so one can sanitise without handling anything directly.

Most establishments have also started keeping a temperature gun as a higher than normal temperature is one of the main indicators of Covid. From being pointed at the forehead where one felt they were faced with a hold-up with an actual gun, it has evolved to pointing the temperature gun at the wrist level now which feels less alarming! (Though the lurking suspicion is still there about the efficacy of the gun itself, as no one has been stopped at any entrance and told to step aside due to abnormal temperature).

Then comes the third and most important part of maintaining social distancing with the recommended ideal being six feet distance, often a hard to BENGALURU

follow act given the physical limitations of the space itself.

However, if we follow the a little protocol, maintain the mask-sanitisersocial distance routine meticulously and avoid any physical contact with people or exposed surfaces, then we can consider ourselves battle-armoured and defence-ready against the deadly virus.

As it has been seen that even in densely populated countries like Japan, the spread of the pandemic is very limited because of the scrupulous hygiene being maintained and masks being absolutely de rigueur the moment one steps out of the house.

Social restraint, rigorous hygiene standards, prescribed protocols are the name of the game now, and with a little conscious control and self-discipline one can resume the business of life.

And the business of commerce can flourish once again to keep the earth turning on its axis!

The holistic approach to its diagnosis and treatment by Dr Richa Singh of Perfect Bounce

Dr Richa Singh, a leading exponent of physiotherapy and a well-known authority on non-surgical solutions for many health ailments, throws light in this feature on a relatively lesser known condition called fibromyalgia and the treatment protocol needed for it.

Fibromyalgia is a fairly common chronic pain illness, but is little understood by most of the people suffering from it. It starts as a “touch pain”, with hyper sensitivity to touch in a particular part of the body and can slowly spread to other parts and takes over the whole body where a patient would be in constant pain, starting from mild to moderate and going on to become chronic.

The common mistake that people make is to put it down to muscle pain but fibromyalgia is more pervasive and can be traced to neurological cum orthopaedic issues. The first step to dealing with it is correct prognosis and diagnosis.

treatment of the condition through physiotherapy, dry needling and other therapies, medication, as well as lifestyle management and counselling, all depending on the patient’s individual state which has to be customised on a case to case basis,” explains Dr Richa Singh.

The biggest challenge today is lack of awareness of fibromyalgia in India because of which people go undiagnosed. There are 6 million fibromyalgia patients in the USA. So, it is common in developed and developing countries and has been found to affect people across all socioeconomic strata. Women seem to be more prone to it but attribute it to muscular or psychosomatic pains, depression and decreasing productivity. Emotional and hormonal imbalances or post-delivery issues can also be factors.

So the first step is awareness, then diagnosis and then the line of treatment.

Recovery can be up to 100% depending on whether it is moderate or chronic.

Patient’s lifestyle changes, environmental factors and their own will power also helps in best results. History of the patient needs to be clearly noted by the competent authority for ascertaining aggravating factors, emotional imbalances and depression before a treatment path is chalked out.

Treatment includes a combination of muscle relaxants, anti-depressives, exercise, pain management, chiropractic treatments, physiotherapy protocols, anti-inflammatory diets – all these need to be fine-tuned to each individual’s case.
