Down in Kerry you can enjoy the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival while in Waterford music fans will love the ever-popular Dunmore East Bluegrass Festival which takes place this month.

Leinster - The East Coast Province Leinster is the most easterly of the four provinces of Ireland, and is the most populated with the city of Dublin at its heart. The province is made up of counties Dublin, Louth, Meath, Carlow, Kildare, Wicklow, Laois, Offaly, Longford, Westmeath, Kilkenny and Wexford. These counties have a host of historic monuments, a picture perfect coastline and cities and villages thronged with things to do and see.

County Dublin is the home to the capital city. Dublin is the administrative, cultural, and economic capital of the country. It is one of the most exciting places to visit with a thriving arts, musical and theatrical nightlife.

All roads lead to Saint Stephen’s Green in the very centre of the city. You’ll find it at the top of Grafton Street, with Trinity College down at the other end. And just around the corner you can stroll around the cultural quarter of Temple Bar between Dame Street and the river that, famously, divides the North and the South of the city.

If you want to escape to the country without

GPO, Dublin actually leaving the city, then you can head north to Howth Head, or south to the charming and culturally vibrant villages of Dalkey and Killiney. Half an hour on the DART train will take you from the centre of the city to what feels like the heart of the country.

County Meath formerly known as the Royal County is the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland who were based around the Hill of Tara. Meath is also one of the most archaeologically important counties on the island with its Neolithic sites at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. These ancient religious sites (built before the Pyramids) have been excavated and restored in recent years making them some of the busiest visitors’ attractions in the country. The sites are all only less than an hour’s drive out of Dublin and are accessible

The county also features the site of the Battle of the Boyne which was one of the great battles fought on Irish soil. For horse racing lovers, Meath has the wonderful Fairyhouse Racecourse, and there is also summertime horse racing on Laytown Beach.

County Wicklow has several world famous sites and attractions, from the Glendalough monastic settlement with its Abbey and Round Tower, to the fabulous Powerscourt House and Gardens. The Wicklow Hills rising majestically over the county and the seaside town of Bray are just some of its many attractions.

Offaly is situated in the centre of Ireland.

Nestling between the Shannon River to the West and the Slieve Bloom Mountains to the East, Offaly is one of the lowest lying counties in the country. Any visitor should travel along the Royal Canal where one can experience a peace and tranquillity little known in our busy world.

Kildare is the home of the National Stud, Newbridge Silverware and Maynooth College.

Couple all these with Mondello Park motor racing, Naas horse racing course and Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park and there is something for everyone.

Westmeath is a county which has at its heart the town of Athlone which is exactly situated in the middle of Ireland. It is home to the RTÉ

All-Ireland Drama Festival, the oldest pub in Ireland and some of the finest golfing, fishing and health spas on offer throughout the land.

Louth is known as “the wee county” as it is the

smallest county in Ireland but what it lacks in land mass it makes up for in places to see. It is the home of the Cooley Mountains, the Boyne river which is famous for its salmon fishing and the beautiful Carlingford area. If it is a leisurely drive you seek Louth is the place to go. Carlow is where you will find three of Ireland’s key national walking routes – the South Leinster, the Barrow and the Wicklow Ways. Carlow is blessed with hundreds of miles of excellent and varied walking trails, and hosts a wonderful arts festival every June.

Laois is where you can try your hand at a

Kilkenny City was voted Ireland’s Top Tourism Town for 2013 by Failte Ireland which is Ireland’s main tourism body. It was voted Cleanest Town in Ireland at end of 2013 by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL), and has also been voted 9th friendliest city in the world by readers of Conde Nast Traveler. The city was in addition voted Most Friendliest City in Europe. Couple all these awards with a huge countywide cultural heritage trail and it is a must see destination for any visitor.

Longford is situated in the basin of the River Shannon and the upper catchment area of the River Erne. It is ideally located in the heart of the Lakelands region within easy reach of many stunning and historic tourist attractions. The county’s accessibility to many of Irelands main towns and cities make it a prime location as a holiday base.

Finally, Wexford is famous for its glorious sandy coastline and together with County Waterford is known as ‘The Sunny South East’. You can also visit the oldest lighthouse in Europe which stands on the Hook Peninsula.

So now you know, whether you are a family group, a couple, or a single traveller, there is something for everyone in Leinster!

A Skull in Connemara Decadent Theatre Company and the Olympia Theatre have announced a new production of Martin McDonagh’s hilafrious black comedy, A Skull in Connemara. Starring Pat Shortt in the lead role as local gravedigger Mick Dowd, A Skull in Connemara will run at the Olympia Theatre from 14th August for 3 weeks only. This production is directed by Andrew Flynn.

A Skull in Connemara: Strange rumours have begun to surface about the local gravedigger, Mick Dowd - rumours about his involvement in the sudden death of his late wife seven years earlier. Enter a cast of nosey neighbours, a troublesome teenager, and an ambitious Guard to set the scene for a brilliant black comedy by master playwright Martin McDonagh.

Award winning writer/director Martin McDonagh is one of Ireland’s most successful and prolific playwrights and screenwriters. His most recent work, the acclaimed Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, scooped five BAFTA awards and two wins at the Oscars for Frances McDormand (Best Actress) and Sam Rockwell (Best Supporting Actor).

Speaking of the announcement of this new production Pat Shortt said, ‘I have previously worked with Martin McDonagh on The Lonesome West in 1998 with Druid Theatre Company touring Ireland, The Cripple of Inishmaan in 2014 with The Michael Grandage Theatre Co. on the West End stage in London and On Broadway (NYC) the following year. I am hugely excited to work once again with Martin on the critically acclaimed A Skull in Connemara with Decadent Theatre Co. Hopefully this time I'll get it right.’

The cast for this production also includes Maria McDermottroe (Killinascully), Patrick Ryan (Red Rock) and Jarlath Tivnan (The Pillowman). Set design will be by Irish Times Theatre Award winners Owen McCarthaigh and Sinead McKenna.

NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK

AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM 20 free public events at the National Museum’s 4 sites in Dublin and Mayo National Heritage Week is a nine-day celebration of Ireland’s natural, built and cultural heritage and runs from Saturday 18th to Sunday 26th of August.This year’s theme is ‘Sharing Stories’ which is an ideal theme for the National Museum where there is at least one story behind every object.

As part of this year’s programme, the National Museum of Ireland will host twenty free public events which will take place across the Museum’s four sites in Dublin and Mayo.The Museum’s programme of events will share stories from its vast collections, told by a wide range of people, including artists, storytellers, travellers, design historians, zoologists, archaeologists and a falconer.

In Dublin, the Museum welcomes Ellen Hagen from the Museum of Archaeology at the University of Stavanger, Norway, who will explore in a unique workshop the history and technique of ‘Nålbindning’, or needle

binding, an ancient technique used by the Vikings in the fabrication of their clothes.This event will take place in the Museum’s Archaeology branch on Kildare Street. Ellen is also a falconer in her native Norway and will share the story of the relationship between falcons and the Vikings at the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History on Merrion Street. Ellen explains, “I am very much looking forward to taking part in Heritage Week in Ireland, to share insights on two cultural heritages that have been around for a long time, needle binding and falconry.These old traditions of textile making and hunting would have been practiced at the same time in both Ireland and in Norway, two countries that have a strong connection through the heritage of the Viking Age.” The Museum also welcomes Ghanaian storyteller Adekunle Gomez from the African Cultural Project and Africa Institute in Ireland. you will hear Adekunle tell stories about the tails of a monkey, elephant and sea turtle.

There will also be a free family hands-on event about the explorer Leopold McClintock, the Arctic Fox, and about the tiger given by an English King to the Museum.

At the National Museum of Ireland Decorative Arts & History visual artist Claire Halpin will host a street-art workshop in Clarke Square, where families will create a huge family tree drawing on the square itself.

Using chalks and stencils, a great big family tree will grow, connecting past and present, sharing stories and histories.

Meanwhile in Mayo, at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, events will explore

the newest exhibitions on display, including Travellers' Journey, which celebrates the rich culture, traditions and crafts of the Traveller community in the west of Ireland.There will be a recreation of Traveller life in the 1950s, including a fully restored barrel top wagon, a traditional tent, a flat cart, a working tinsmith,Traveller storytellers and a campfire.

Connected to the Museum’s popular ‘National Treasures’ exhibition, there will be talks by Ruth Griffin and Linda King, two of the ‘National Treasures’ historians, who will discuss how the objects and stories gathered during the television series can give us a unique and fascinating angle on Irish history.

The Abbey Theatre Jimmy’s Hall

Jimmy’s Hall tells the true story of Leitrim farmer Jimmy Gralton, the only Irishman deported from his own country. His crime was to build a dance hall where he encouraged the local community to learn, to argue and to dream, but above all to dance and have fun.

As the hall grew in popularity its free-spirited reputation brought it to the attention of the

church and politicians who forced Jimmy to flee and the hall to close. A decade later, at the height of the Depression, Jimmy returns from the US. The hall stands abandoned but as Jimmy sees the poverty and growing oppression in the village, the leader and activist within him is stirred. He decides to reopen the hall, and so takes on the established authorities of the church and the government.

Riverdance returns home to Dublin to the Gaiety Theatre from 12 June 2018.

The worldwide phenomenon which is Riverdance began its journey as the interval act in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. SUNLIGHT CHAMBERS

I

n any city across the world there are buildings people walk by every day whose unusual decoration or sculptural embellishments might raise some mild interest or curiosity but hardly anybody bothers to look a bit deeper and see if there was any additional meaning intended. One such building on Dublin’s riverside is Sunlight Chambers, loved by most but understood by few. Unbelievably, when it was first built the primary building journal of the time, The Irish Builder, announced that it was “one of the ugliest buildings in Ireland”!

At the turn of the 19th and into the 20th century, personal hygiene was still rudimentary if not altogether absent for a significant number of people. Only the privileged had a bath in their homes. A single water tap serving the whole house was commonplace. Toilets may have been just crude facilities in the backyard. Showers or washing machines were unheard of. It was even considered by some folk that to wash oneself frequently was only to expose your skin to outside germs.

In James Joyce’s famed novel Ulysses, the hero, Leopold Bloom, visits Sweny’s Pharmacy on Lincoln Place to buy a bar of lemon soap to use for his visit to the nearby Turkish baths.

He wanted to bathe here as he also did not possess a bath in his rented Georgian house on Eccles Street. Soap was still a rare commodity in those days (1904) and the innovation of its first introduction as a mass production item was the inspiration for the colourful façade of Sunlight Chambers at the corner of Parliament Street and Essex Quay. Parliament Street itself was laid down in 1762, the first work of

a new planning authority grandly known as the Commissioners for Making Wide and Convenient Streets. Up to that Dublin was a congested city of narrow medieval streets, lanes and alleyways.

Replacing an earlier building at the very edge of the old Viking town, Sunlight Chambers (‘chambers’ is a rather archaic word meaning ‘offices’) was erected in 1901 as the headquarters for the Irish operations of Lever Brothers (William and James), the English soap and detergent manufacturers. “Sunlight” was the company’s brand name for their then main soap product, hence the origin of the name of their Irish offices. Traditionally soap was made from animal fats but their company

chemist, William Hough Watson, came up with a more useful industrial product prepared from glycerine and vegetable fats (mainly palm oil). Initially sold in 1884 from their family grocery shop in Bolton, their marketing was so successful that their company became one of the largest firms in Britain, employing 250,000 people by 1930 when it merged with a Dutch company to become the name it is known by today, Unilever.

William Lever (later Lord Leverhulme – Hulme was his wife’s maiden name) was the driving force in the company (his brother was sickly) and he demonstrated a care for his workers by building in 1888 Port Sunlight, a model (but alcohol free) town for his employees and their families located across

the Mersey from Liverpool. Unfortunately, his humanity didn’t prevent the exploitation of his African workers in the Belgian Congo who literally slaved to produce his palm oil! While returning from one of his African trips in 1925 Lord Leverhulme contracted pneumonia and died aged 74, in London.

Back to Dublin! Sunlight wasn’t seen as a soap for washing the person but was more a laundry soap but still relatively unheard of in Ireland. So the crafty Lord decided to use his new Dublin headquarters to promote the cleansing application of his useful product.

Designed with a Florentine flourish by Edward Ould, the architect for Port Sunlight, the scheme called for a series of twelve panels and four roundels on the three facades of the building. They were to depict colourful glazed ceramic figures in relief carrying out certain duties in the pursuit of cleanliness. The sculptor-potter was Conrad Dressler of the Medmenham Pottery in Buckinghamshire.

The top seven panels show people working in the fields, the forest, delivering coal, constructing an arch ploughing and fishing. In other words, vocations that resulted in getting your clothes dirty and smelly! The lower panels provide the solution to all the mess. The

friezes here demonstrate the extraction of raw materials, the manufacture of soap, merchants bargaining for scents and oils and cleaning or

laundry women scrubbing clothes alongside a river and removing wicker baskets of washed laundry.

his August Smock Alley Theatre presents its tenth in-house production, The Shaughraun, written

by Dion Boucicault. Smock Alley’s production is a modernisation of this melodrama, musically underscored (think New Romantics) and imagining ourselves in another post-crash Ireland. Is history always destined to repeat itself?

Robert Ffolliott, fiancee of Arte O’Neil, has returned to Ireland after escaping from prison in Australia. Robert, an innocent local gentleman, has been convicted as a Fenian fugitive but it soon becomes clear that he is no such thing. The villain Kinchela, Robert’s fake friend, tries to hunt Robert down and arrest him – his main motive being greed for Robert’s estate and his desire for Arte, Robert’s fiancee. With the help of Conn the Shaughraun, Robert escapes various melodramatic cliff-hanger situations. Meanwhile, Robert’s sister Claire is in love with an English soldier, Captain Molineaux, who is tracking down Fenians in the area. She cannot decide whether or not to protect her brother or betray the Captain – her heart is torn in two – family loyalty or true love.

Written in 1874 by the Irish master of melodrama Dion Boucicault, the themes in this play still ring true – from vulture bankers, rising rents, #metoo and homelessness, to Anglo-Irish relations and impending Brexit doom. But can love conquer all? That is the question…

Featuring a stellar cast from Cork, Longford, Louth, Waterford and Dublin this is a show not to be missed; a heart-racing, fast-paced, musically joyous, comedy of sorrows, incorporating hunger, greed, love, loyalty, and a fall off a cliff!

Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival T

his year sees the 8th annual Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival take place from August 23rd – 26th in Co. Kerry. It is a 4 day celebration packed with film screenings, guest speakers, workshops, music, stand-up comedy, street entertainment and circus performances at Fossett’s Big Top, our national circus.

The film programme at the festival will feature its usual schedule of Charlie Chaplin movies - this year showing Limelight and The Immigrant. The Chaplin Comedy night's line-up includes Karl Spain and Republic of Telly’s Kevin McGahern. The audience will be entertained by Hermitage Green on Saturday night and an early concert with Jake Carter and his band on Sunday evening.

Guest speakers include Samantha Power, Cass Sunstein and Gwenda Young.

On Sunday there will be a Guinness World Record Attempt -the largest gathering of people dressed as Charlie Chaplin and the pivotal event of the festival is of course the competition for filmmakers.

On top of all that street entertainer Charlie Pakdel, the most famous Charlie Chaplin impersonator in the world, is back this year by popular demand.

This promises to be a unique event on the beautiful Wild Atlantic Way.

ow in its 24th year the Dunmore East International Bluegrass Festival is still proving as alluring as ever for top music acts, as some of the industry’s greatest bluegrass and country music acts line up for the free four-day festival in the Co. Waterford coastal village from August 23rd to August 26th.

Fans of bluegrass, honky-tonk, blues, country, Americana and rhythm ‘n’ roots are in for a real musical treat as the Bluegrass Festival will feature 14 artists playing almost 40 free gigs throughout the picturesque village.

The Hunt Museum Cliffs of Moher Loop Head Lighthouse This popular tourist attraction is located at the mouth of the Shannon Estuary on the Loop Head Peninsula, which is one of two “Signature Discovery Points” in County Clare along the route of the Wild Atlantic Way. It also is a landmark location on the Loop Head Heritage Trail and is one of 12 Great Lighthouses of Ireland. The lighthouse is steeped in history and rich in maritime heritage with its origins dating back to the 1670s. The existing tower style lighthouse was constructed in 1854 and was operated and maintained by a keeper who lived within the lighthouse compound. In January 1991, the lighthouse was converted to automatic operation, and today is monitored by the CIL.Open daily (10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.) until 5 November.

The Hunt Museum has artefacts from Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Olmec civilisation. There is also an important collection of Irish archaeological material ranging from Neolithic flints, Bronze Age material, and Christian art.

One of the strengths of the collection is the medieval material, which include statues in stone and wood, painted panels, jewellery, enamels, ivories, ceramics, crystal and crucifixes. Plus work from Picasso, Renoir, Roderic O’Conor, Jack B. Yeats, Robert Fagan and Henry Moore.

Stretching for eight kilometres along the coastline and standing at 214 metres at their highest point, the Cliffs of Moher give the visitor a panoramic view out onto the Atlantic Ocean. It is said that on a clear day you can see the Aran Islands and Galway Bay, over the twelve pins and the Blasket Islands off the coast of Kerry.

Titanic Experience Cobh is located in the original White Star Line Ticket Office in the centre of Cobh town (formerly known as Queenstown) the departure point for the final 123 passengers who boarded the Titanic. The visitor experience is presented in two parts. The first is an immersive audio visual tour retracing the steps of the 123 passengers who boarded Titanic from Queenstown on April 11th 1912. The second part of the Titanic Experience examines how it all went wrong. The unbelievable and “almost” impossible sequence of events that occurred to cause Titanic to sink.

T

he exhibition at Cobh Heritage Centre, known as The Queenstown Story, is inventively situated within Cobh’s restored Victorian railway station, a building with its own historic story.

The Queenstown Story will engage the visitor in a journey through time, recalling Irish emigration with real stories about real people. From the indentured servants of Virginia and the West Indies plantations in the 17th century, the early settlers in upper Canada, the famine victims of the 1840s to the large-scale emigration of the 19th and 20th centuries. The visitor will also discover the hardships endured by the convicts who were transported to Australia.

The present town of Cobh has its origins as a small village nestled in the hillside on the southern shores. The village was known as Cove, being situated in the cove, or harbour, of Cork.

The town did not begin to grow until the early nineteenth century, but its strategic importance was realised in the late eighteenth century during the American War of Independence. Vital shiploads of troops and supplies were needed by the British forces

fighting in America between 1775 and 1781.

The entry of France into the war in 1778 heightened the danger of these ships being attacked at sea. This large and safe harbour provided ideal conditions in which the ships could assemble and be protected. The wars against France from the 1790s to 1815 were to prove the catalyst which led to the future prosperity of the town as Cove and its harbour played an important role in this war at sea.

Cove went on to become a major port with both naval and merchant shipping and was one of the major ports of emigration.

Cobh, or Queenstown as it was known at the time, has very close connections with the two great liners of the 20th century, The Titanic and The Lusitania - discover the human stories behind these tragic events.

The exhibition is a self-guided tour with audio tours available in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Chinese. It is not just interesting and educational, but very emotive and thought-provoking.

The province of Connaught lies in the West of Ireland with its coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. T

he workhouse system in Ireland actually predates the ‘Great Hunger’, having been expanded under the Irish Poor Law Act of 1838. The country was divided into 130 different unions, with a further 33 added during the ‘famine years’ in those regions worst-afflicted.

Each union’s workhouse was financed by a tax on property with the first workhouses opening in 1841, and 10 of 163 located in Co Galway. They were situated at Ballinasloe, Clifden, Glenamaddy, Galway, Gort, Loughrea, Mountbellew, Oughterard, Portumna, and Tuam. Only Co Cork had more.

The architect for the workhouses was George Wilkinson, a man blessed in Irish history in having so few critics, though his various plans were undoubtedly not without major flaws in terms of being inadequately and then excessively ventilated.

On entering workhouses, families were separated and often may never have seen each other again. Life inside was harsh and

indeed cruel. There were many rules, the food was poor, and in Irish workhouses there was only limited work available.

The diet varied from workhouse to workhouse but generally consisted of a porridge-like ‘stir-about’, milk, and potatoes. Children also got bread. Adults received two meals a day, and children three.

Though undoubtedly separate, the workhouses were paradoxically still part of the community in which they were located. They provided business to local suppliers, employment, and sometimes medical care to the locals.

Today, the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna is the arts, heritage, and cultural centre for the region, and is the only centre dedicated to telling the story of the workhouse system in Ireland.

In both 2017 and 2018 it won national Heritage Council awards for its heritage activities. The Workhouse is open March to October each year, with guided tours seven days a week from 09.30 to 17.00.

Kylemore Abbey Few places on earth have the tranquillity and beauty of Kylemore Abbey and its majestic Victorian walled garden, which won the prestigious Europa Nostra Award in 2002.The garden comprises of roughly 6 acres and is divided in two by a natural mountain stream. The eastern half comprises of the flower or pleasure garden, glass houses and gardeners’ houses. Glencar Waterfall Glencar Waterfall is situated near Glencar Lake, 11 kilometres west of Manorhamilton, County Leitrim. It is particularly impressive after rain and can be viewed from a lovely wooded walk. The most dramatic waterfall descends from a 50ft rocky headland into a deep pool below in a haze of white spray. A paved path to the viewing area provides a wonderful vantage point from which to view the waterfall which is particularly spectacular during wet conditions.

Arigna Mining Experience Discover what coal mining life was like for coal miners in the Arigna Valley in Roscommon from the 1700’s until its closure in 1990. Visit the exhibition area to discover the history of the mine and then take an underground tour of the mine, where the methods used to extract coal are demonstrated, with lighting and sound effects added for authenticity.

Dún Aonghasa National Museum of Ireland - Country Life The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life in Turlough Park, Castlebar houses exhibits showing how rural people in Ireland lived from the time of the Great Famine right up until the 1950s. Connemara Mullaghmore is one of the surfing capitals of the Irish Atlantic coastline, and is recognised as one of the top surfing destinations in the world. It was on the summit of this mountain that Saint Patrick fasted for forty days in 441 AD, and the custom has been faithfully handed down from generation to generation. On the last day in July 25,000 pilgrims climb it, and over a million people visit Croagh Patrick every year.

Great Irish Writers SEAMUS HEANEY

W

hen Seamus Heaney died four years ago, he left behind a legacy as not just a great Irish writer, but probably one of the most well known poets of modern times. His influence has been felt all over the world, with people such as former US President Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden professing to be fans of his work. Heaney has also influenced a wide range of writers, such as Natasha Trethewey, Kevin Young and Colm Tóibín.

Heaney was born into a farming family in Derry in April 1939 and was raised in the village of Bellaghy. The eldest of nine children, he attended Anahorish Primary School before attending secondary school at St Columb’s College, going on to gain a first class honours in English Language and Literature from Queen’s University in Belfast in 1961. He then took up a position as a teacher in St Thomas’ Secondary School in the city.

It was around this time that Heaney’s first poems were published in student magazines, leading to the publication of his first book, Eleven Poems, in 1965. But it was the release of his second collection, Death of a Naturalist, the following year that brought Heaney to wider acclaim. The book contained some of his best known and well loved poems, including “Digging” and “Mid-Term Break” and was praised for its skillful use of metaphor and language, attention to detail and rural imagery.

By then Heaney had become a lecturer, initially at St Joseph’s College of Education before returning to Queen’s University, followed by a spell as a guest lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1972 he moved to Wicklow and began to write full time, producing many more volumes of poetry and prose. He would return to lecturing at Carysfort College in Dublin and would divide his time for the rest of his life between Sandymount in Dublin and the US, where he became a visiting professor at Harvard University.

He continued to give readings all over the world and produce critically acclaimed volumes of poetry and in 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature - adding his name

to the list of previous Irish winners which includes WB Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and Samuel Beckett. He continued to produce work prolifically for the rest of his life, with his 2010 collection Human Chain being nominated for the TS Eliot Prize.

Heaney died in August 2013 at the age of 74 following a short illness. Such is the affection that the nation holds for him that his funeral was broadcast live by the national broadcaster, RTE, and was streamed all over the world. Despite living in Dublin for much of the latter part of his life, Heaney was buried in his home village of Bellaghy. In 2016 the Seamus Heaney HomePlace opened in the village. The HomePlace houses an interactive exhibition, arranged over two floors and filled with personal stories and artefacts, dozens of family photographs, as well video recordings from friends, neighbours, world leaders, cultural figures, and the voice of the great man himself.

Fans of Heaney can now visit Seamus Heaney HomePlace which is located in the village of Bellaghy and celebrates the life and literature of the poet and Nobel Laureate who was one of Ireland's greatest writers. Seamus Heaney was born and raised within the area and choose Bellaghy as his final resting place.

2018 also sees the release of 100 Poems, a new selection of Seamus Heaney’s poetry published by Faber & Faber. Seamus Heaney himself conceived the idea of a personal selection of poems from across the entire arc of his writing life, small yet comprehensive enough to serve as an introduction. 100 Poems is an intimate collection chosen and introduced by the Heaney family.

The Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again exhibition is now open at the new Bank of Ireland Cultural and Heritage Centre at College Green. The exhibition draws on the National Library’s extensive archive of Heaney documents and features Heaney’s original manuscripts as well as letters, unpublished works, diary entries, photographs, note books, and multi-media recordings.
