Summer in Northern Europe with SeaDream

Page 1

Summer in Northern Europe “It’s yachting, not cruising” Enjoy the difference.

Northern Europe The Northern Europe sailing region stretches from the historic British Isles through scenic Scandinavia, all the way to St. Petersburg, the heart of Russia. Also referred to as Baltic cruises or Scandinavia cruises, the sailing “season” is from late May through August. It’s then you’ll experience long hours of daylight, verdant forests in full flower and comfortable, summer temperatures ideal for sightseeing. Norway, like Alaska, is best seen from the water. Nowhere are there fjords to match the grandeur of those in Norway, where the clear water reflects the mountains like a mirror. SEADREAM’s Northern Europe voyages offer a dramatic mix of mountains, seas, forests and fjords, quaint villages, graceful castles and celebrated Old Town centers. Extraordinary historical and cultural sites await you. Yachting Land Adventures consist of classical museums, baroque palaces, Renaissance castles and cathedrals. Well-known souvenirs of the region are hand-knit sweaters, fine crystal, antiques, silver and porcelain.

“…We had a great time-best ever, and will be coming back…Charlie and I feel like we’ve been yachting with our “best friends”. Hard to believe we didn’t know anyone on the yacht 8 days ago-now we’ve met new traveling friends for the years to come.” Mr. & Mrs. Charles Hogan, Seattle, Washington

The Baltic Meeting point of east and west during the Cold War era, few other areas have shaped contemporary human history like the Baltic. It is no wonder Baltic composers the likes of Nielson, Sibelius, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky were inspired to compose dramatic marches. Follow the human struggle from the wonder of St. Petersburg’s splendid palaces to Tallinn’s fairytale old city and the Scandinavian capitals of Oslo and Stockhölm, where the Nobel Prizes are awarded each year. Majesty and scenic beauty guide your yacht through one of the world’s richest maritime regions.

Stockholm, Sweden An enchanting municipality at the meeting point of Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea, the Swedish capital is one of the world’s great maritime cities. Stockholm’s maritime doorstep is a magnificent archipelago of more than 24,000 islands and islets – many just big enough to support a single cottage. As you yacht toward the 13th century ‘city that floats on water’, landmarks such as Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral) and Three Crowns Tower come into view. The Medieval Gamla Stan district is the historic core of the original Stadsholmen Island settlement. S EAD REAM Land Adventure participants explore the old city and royal highlights.

St. Petersburg, Russia When Peter the Great laid the foundation for Peter and Paul Fortress on the Neva’s Zayachy Island in 1703, the Great Northern War (Sweden vs. Russia) was in full bloom. Floods, collapsing foundations, occasional attack from the west, and disease at the swampy site hampered construction. Catherine (the Great), who succeeded Peter, built impressive palaces and imported fine art. The extraordinary Hermitage and Petrodvorets rank among the finest. Join a SEADREAM Land Adventure to visit the amazing Hermitage Museum; one of the world’s finest and most comprehensive art collections.

6

Bornholm, Denmark History lives on the gentle Baltic winds that caress Bornholm. The island’s fortified round churches and archaic ruins are its legacy and strike sharp contrast to the contemporary beach resorts. Åkirkeby, at the island center, is the largest and oldest town. Founded in 1346, it was a popular Medieval spiritual center. Stroll or tour around Gudhjelm to admire the colorful seaside town. Wisps from smokehouse chimneys fill the air with the scent of cured herring. At the town’s Oluf Høst Museum, many canvases depict local scenes. SEADREAM Land Adventure participants explore the island’s Templar history or explore the countryside on bicycle.

Tallinn, Estonia Tradition and history connect Estonia with it’s Baltic neighbors, but culturally, only Finland and Estonia share common threads. Their collective ancestry traces to Hungarians who migrated northward before records were accurate. Although human relics date back 10,000 years, no one is certain when the first migrants arrived. Lose yourself in the twisting streets of the fortified Toompea, the capital’s historic center. The attractive castle is described in countless fairy tales. Browse the alluring vendors in the expansive town square. Join a SEADREAM Land Adventure to explore the charming district on foot or by bicycle.

7

Kiel Canal, Germany It’s just a short distance between Brunsbüttel and Kiel on a map, but the 61 mi/98.7 km Kiel Canal saves mariners a full day’s journey around the long Jutland Peninsula. The channel winds across Germanys’ pastoral SchleswigHolstein Region – in places, the fields seem so close, you could almost touch the cows. Friendly German residents with homes along the route wave to passing marine traffic and would clearly invite guests for fresh baked goods and tea if they would only stop for a visit.

Sassnitz, Germany Rügen is the name of an archipelago of 30 small islands and peninsulas that jut into the Baltic Sea off Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Germany’s largest island, also known as Rügen, was an Imperial resort. The nostalgic Belle Epoque legacy lingers in its tiny fishing villages, secluded beaches, and pleasant treelined avenues. Visitors seeking summer activity are never disappointed. Enjoy the island’s well-maintained trails or take a bicycle and pedal across the countryside. For most visitors, a Sassnitz vacation means a quiet patch of sand or a room at the vintage Fürstenhof Hotel.

8

Sognefjord, Norway Summer sun floods Norway’s deepest fjords like a refreshing April shower. The light dances off the walls and waterfalls before sparkling into the depths. From the your private yacht, the sight is unforgettable – be on deck so you can admire Norwegian majesty. The kingdom’s longest and deepest channel, Sognefjord reaches more than 200 km into the heart of the west fjords region. Among the prettiest of its several branches, Nærøyfjord, a mere 17 km stretch, narrows to just 250 m at its most slender turn.

Bergen, Norway Oslo is capital, but Bergen is the quintessential Norwegian city. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Bryggen (old town) is filled with carefully preserved wooden homes. Restored as shops, cafés and guesthouses, the attractive district looks as though it was lifted from another century. Stroll across Fisketorget, the open-air fish market and allow your senses to take it all in (and be sure to sample some fresh shrimp or smoked peppered mackerel!). Ride the funicular to the top of Mount Fløien and admire the sweeping view before heading off to visit composer Edvard Grieg’s birth home.

9

Hardangerfjord, Norway Hardangerfjord, near Bergen, is especially known for its many fruit trees. Each spring, their fragrance and color prepare the entire region for the approaching summer. It is a cherished time and the local mood soars to embrace it. By autumn, the blossoms have matured into apples and local cider presses are in full operation. Among the fjord’s scenic natural highlights, Vøringsfossen, one of Norway’s best known waterfalls, drops 182 m at the head of Måbødalen Valley, and 203 sq km Folgefonna Glacier is the nation’s third largest.

Lillesand, Norway Norway’s “White towns,” so-named for the prominent whitewashed homes that line their harbors and dot the southern coast. These important buildingbeacons guided pre-computer age mariners who used the bright façades and local lighthouses to help navigate the rocky and treacherous Norwegian coast. Among the welcoming towns, Lillesand was also a bustling shipbuilding center – before the advent of the steam engine. With the shift from wind power, Lillesand settled back into its old habits as a pleasant fishing village. Explore the charming town and don’t miss the region’s scenic roads and their amazing tunnels.

o

Alesund, Norway Norvoy, Aspoy and Hessa, three islands at the entrance to Storfjord (‘big fjord’), have been joined as the pleasant town of Ålesund. Although it was established in the 9th century, a tragic fire consumed nearly all of the old district in 1904. Jugendstil, aka Art Nouveau, was very popular at the time, so architects incorporated it into the new design, leaving a delightful legacy. The gabled town church features detailed stained glass and colorful harborside homes showcase the successful reconstruction effort. Ålesund´s Museum houses old photos and a model of the 1898 town layout, offering a glimpse into the past.

Marstrand, Sweden A necklace of more than 3,000 craggy island ‘pearls’ linked with bridges and ferries, is Sweden’s appealing Bohuslän coast. Reminiscent of the archipelago near Stockholm, the region is a popular summer resort for Gøteborg residents, many of whom own summer cottages in the islands. Carlstens Fästning (Carlsten Fort) and stark 13th-century Marstrands Kyrka (church) are the town centerpieces. The surrounding region is one of Sweden’s prettiest districts – take a short cruise on the Dalsland Canal to explore the stunning Lake District and the amazing bridge-canal.

11

Pirates Lair, Mont St-Michel Unforgiving tides lend dramatic beauty to Normandy’s coastal wetlands. For centuries, this island at the mouth of the Couesnon River was accessible only during the ebb, but a modern elevated road has resolved the problem. Briefly used as a brutal prison during the French Revolution, the imposing island fortress of Mont St-Michel draws a steady stream of visitors. L’Abbaye du MontSaint-Michel, the mysterious island monastery, celebrated its 1,000th birthday in 1966.

Gironde, France France’s Atlantic shore between Pointe de Grave (at the mouth of the Gironde River) and Biarritz (at the foot of the Pyrenées), is known as Côte d’Argent. Cooler than its Côte d’Azur cousin, its fine beaches are far less crowded. The river narrows near Bordeaux, center one of the world’s most celebrated wine producing regions. More than 10,000 vineyards dot the countryside providing most of the epicurean nation’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sémillon, Savignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes. Visit one of the region’s legendary chateaux, such as: Margaux, Mouton-Rothschild or Haut-Brion.

12

Saint Sebastian, Spain Almost perfectly round, Spain’s tiny La Gomera island is a steep and craggy beauty that rises sharply from the sea. Palm trees thrive in the rich volcanic soil adding a blanket of green to the landscape. Lush and rugged, it lures hikers and eco-tourists seeking a chance to commune with nature. La Gomera’s two main visitor destinations focus on the west coast Valle Gran Rey, and Playa de Santiago on the island’s southern side. Not far from Santiago, San Sebastian’s colorful homes stack up the hillside from the harbor.

Cascais, Portugal Cascais (`kahz kaish`) and neighboring Estoril share a natural harbor near the Tejo Rivers gaping mouth. The resort is just 20 minutes from Lisbon, so many capital residents maintain second seaside homes. Most of them date from the 19th century, and each one is a study in elaborate design- no one wanted to be outdone! Visit castle-like Museu dos Condes de Castro Guimarães on the southern side of Marechal Park to see one of the villas from the inside. If you are feeling lucky, it is just a short drive north to the casino at Sintra.
