Kaua’i...”THe Garden Island”
Kaua’i is the most northwestern of Hawaii's major islands and is the fourth largest by size and population. Nicknamed the Garden Island, it is covered with lush greenery and tropical plants, watered regularly by abundant rainfall. As the oldest of the islands, it has been changed the most by the forces of erosion, and this has resulted in natural wonders such as Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast. As a consequence of its age, Kauai also has more miles of sandy coastline than the other Hawaiian islands.

The Nā Pali coast (Hawaiian for "the slopes") , featured in the film Jurassic Park and many other movies, is one of the most distinctive geological features of Kauai and consists of sheer cliffs thousands of feet high that drop directly onto pristine secluded beaches The beaches are reachable only by boat, helicopter, or foot for very experienced hikers, but the cliffs may be viewed with a drive to the top
The South Shore has a number of great beaches such as Mahaulepu Beach wth its ancient petroglyphs and the rocky Shipwreck Beach, both perfect for snorkeling or scuba diving Check out Poipu Beach, often ranked as one of the world's top beaches by travel surveys
Hanalei is a charming Hawaiian village in beautiful country on the north of the island Hanalei has a nostalgic, romantic quality of simpler times on the Islands An easy drive to the northwest of Hanalei provides access to the Na Pali coast The valley overlook showcases taro fields in various stages of production.
Lihuʻe, on the islands southeast side, is the civic and commercial center of the island, host to the islands main airport, county offices, and largest shopping mall (Kukui Grove Center) The Kauai Museum, in the old part of Lihue, is the island's best museum on the history, geography, and people of Kauai
Waimea Canyon, on Kauai's West Side, is often described as “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific” The moniker became popular after American explorer John Wesley Powell came to the island of Kauai in 1869

Pu'uhonua O'Honaunau National Historic Park
Extending along the lava flats of the Kona Coast, Puuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is home to some of the most significant traditional Hawaiian sites in the Hawaiian archipelago One of the most prominent features of the park is the puuhonua or place of refuge which is enclosed by the Great Wall, a massive 965 foot long masonry wall Serving as a sanctuary in ancient times for defeated warriors, noncombatants, and those who violated the kapu (sacred laws), the Puuhonua o Hōnaunau remains a most sacred place to those who step foot on its grounds The protected waters of Hōnaunau Bay combined with the availability of water from brackish springs provided the ideal location for the alii - Hawaiian royalty - who established important residential and ceremonial sites nearby, an area known today as the Royal Grounds For several centuries, the puuhonua, the Royal Grounds and adjacent areas formed one of the primary religious and political centers within the traditional district of Kona
Encompassing approximately 420 acres of land that extends through three ahupuaa (traditional Hawaiian land divisions), the park contains many other important sites which reflect over four hundred years of Hawaiian history Such sites include the historic 1871 Trail, a 1-mile segment of a trail that traverses the park coastline, as well as the remains of an abandoned farming and fishing village known as Kiilae Village Other prominent features within the park landscape include the presence of three hōlua slides Reserved for only aliiclass, the dangerous but thrilling sport of hōlua consisted of racing down a steeply sloped course using a narrow toboggan-like sled known as a papahōlua These are just a few of the many sacred sites that are found within the park lands

In ancient times a network of tra ls was constructed across this rugged lava landscape to connect people, places, and resources The 175-m le-long corridor of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Tra l (NHT) preserves some of these ancient and historic trails

Papakōlea Green Sand Beach
Flat, dusty 2-mile hike will lead you to one of four green sand beaches in the world
Papakolea was once a cinder cone volcano. After it erupted, the lava that the volcano spewed was rich in olivine, an abundant mineral in Hawaii's natural volcanic rock. After the eruption, erosion from the ocean and weather slowly eroded the basalt rock until just the olivine was left behind, giving this beach its unique green color
What you need to know
Turn off Route 11 between mile markers 69 and 70 onto South Point Road
10 8 miles on South Point Road to the the parking lot
The hike to Papakolea Beach starts from a parking lot at the end of South Point Road
It is a moderate/strenuous 4 5-mile
Shuttle' Services and Parking Fees are not legal roundtrip hike While the terrain is mostly flat, the exposure to the sun and wind is what makes it difficult
Plan on an hour each direction
Swimming is not recommended because of the rough ocean conditions and strong currents and there is no lifeguard on duty
Kealakekua Bay Snorkelling
The Kona Coast on the Big Island has some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii. On this smallboat cruise, explore the sea caves and lava tubes along the South Kona coast, enjoy swimming and snorkeling at Honaunau Bay and Kealakekua Bay, and look out for bottlenose dolphins, green sea turtles, and pilot whales.
Kealakekua Bay was famously the spot where Captain James Cook was killed and lies along Hawaii’s scenic Kona Coast
The bay holds cultural and historical significance. Kealakekua means “the pathway of the gods” in Hawaiian. It was in this special place that thousands of ancient Hawaiians gathered for an annual celebration honoring their fertility god, Lono-i-ka-makahiki during what is referred to as the makahiki festival
The bay is a 315-acre Marine Life Conservation District located under 100-foot lava cliff. The bay boasts natural wind protection and remote location offering prime snorkeling conditions with visibility up to 100 feet
The bay is fronted by a smooth pahoehoe lava rock shelf known as Pae'a, or Two Step Two Step refers to the way the lava rock has been worn by the surf to create a convenient two-step entry point into the water,

The North Shore is home to some of the largest waves on earth in the winter; the ocean and surfing are a way of life here Along the shore you'll also find charming towns and some interesting cultural attractions You will also find the the Polynesian Cultural Center which offers something found nowhere else: the opportunity to experience the culture not just of Hawaii, but also of seven other Polynesian island groups, all in one place
Honolulu is the state capital and the largest city in the Hawaiian Islands It is home to excellent museums, notable historical sites, scenic landmarks, the tourist hotspot of Waikiki, and a diverse dining and nightlife scene the perfect way to start the transition to going home! Within easy distance are spectacular hikes such as Diamond Head and the foothills of the Ko'olau Mountains. Western Honolulu is the home of Pearl Harbor and several memorial sites and musesums like the USS Arizona and the Bowfin Submarine Museum.
The Windward coast has stunning natural beauty. Although it is not a busy part of the island, it still offers excellent beaches for “tamer” water activities.
