WILDLIFE
Visitors have a unique opportunity to view iconic Canadian animals in their natural habitat.
You may encounter bighorn sheep, deer, elk, black bears and grizzly bears, moose, badgers, mountain goats, fox, pikas, marmots, numerous bird species, and more. These animals contribute to the rich diversity of the Columbia Valley and surrounding area.
Radium Hot Springs is known for its bighorn sheep – the Radium-Stoddart herd – that roam the village, slopes, and grasslands around town.
The rams are distinguished by their large, curled horns that can weigh up to 30 pounds. The females are called ewes and they have short, spiky horns. Both have a sandy-coloured coat and white rump. During the fall mating season, rams battle for dominance by crashing their horns together.
You can come across wildlife when driving, walking around town, and recreating on the trails.
Please keep these guidelines in mind for an experience that is safe for you, your pets, and the wildlife who live here:
• Drive with caution, especially at dawn and dusk when animals may be more active on the road.
• Consider not stopping on the roadside. If you do stop, stay in your vehicle and pull well onto the shoulder.
• Keep a minimum of 30m away from elk, deer, sheep, and moose and 100m away from bears, cougars, wolves, and coyotes.
• Keep pets on a leash, with the exception of designated off-leash areas.
• Leave no trace while on the trails or at your campsite – take all garbage and food with you so it is not accessible by animals.
• Be prepared and aware on the trails. Carry bear spray and know how to use it. Let animals know you are there by making noise.
