In fact, 42 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 38 Heartland Conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 41 Coach of the Year awards and 46 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Transylvania University is in the heart of downtown Lexington, a city with all the excitement and entertainment of a
bustling metropolis while maintaining a small-town feel. Located in the heart of the Bluegrass regions and the second largest city in Kentucky, Lexington features something for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s Third Street Stuff, recently voted the best coffee shop in Kentucky, right around the corner from campus, the Lexington Farmer’s Market; Thursday Night Live featuring local bands and vendors at the 5/3 Pavilion; a concert or basketball game at the world famous Rupp Arena; a day at the track in the horse capital of the world at Keeneland; or a hike at Raven’s Run Nature Preserve.

Transylvania has enjoyed more than a decade of success since joining the NCAA Division III in 2004. The athletics community has excelled both on and off the field, with student-athletes thriving in the classroom and in competition.

Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its studentathletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.
Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.
Nick Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and Trevor Wilkes serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.
Alaina White is in her tenth season as a member of the athletic training staff. She served five years as an assistant trainer before being named the head trainer in 2011. White holds a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University and a Master of Science in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky University. White has a special interest in soft tissue mobilization and hands-on rehabilitation, holding a certification in Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization.

ALAINA WHITE HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER
Libby Cole begins her second year with the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2015-16 after two years at Division I Wight State University in Dayton, Ohio. At Wright State, Cole worked as a graduate assistant and certified athletic trainer. She received her Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Miami (Ohio) University before earning a master’s degree in physical education and sports management from Wright State in 2014

Sarah Humphries enters her second season as head coach and third on Transylvania’s field hockey staff. Humphries is a 2011 Centre College graduate, where she was a four-year varsity student athlete and majored in Biology.
During her career at Centre, Humphries was a four-year starting defender for the Colonels. In her career the Colonels were 58-22. During her freshman year, the team received an NCAA bid, the first in school history. Humphries received Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week nods during her junior and senior years, respectively, as well as being named to the SCAC All-Sportsmanship team. She was the Kitty Baird Award winner her senior year, the highest award given out to a four year letter winner who exemplified leadership and dedication to the sport. Notably, Humphries also was a student coach for the women’s lacrosse team during its inaugural 2011 season.

Sarah Humphries
Prior to TU, Humphries served for two years as the assistant coach at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. While at Earlham she was in charge of the defensive unit, recruiting, film editing, practice planning and study tables. She also worked in Residence Life as a Resident Special Programs Director for first-year students.
While in college, Humphries coached middle school and high school girls for Kentuckiana Field Hockey Association (now Knights Field Hockey Camps & Clinics). During summer breaks, she serves as a coach at the Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Camp in Cape Henlopen, Delaware. Humphries earned a master’s degree in recreation and sport administration from Western Kentucky University in 2015. She is a native of Baltimore, Maryland.
